EDITOR’S NOTE

Celebrating Women

A

t FLAIR, we never cease to celebrate and feature powerful women within our pages. So dedicating the March issue to women was a no brainer. Coinciding with not only Mother’s Day but also International Women’s Day, we honour-not just our mothers- but also the women in our world who are making an impact on all of us. We kick off the celebrations with an exclusive interview with Jennifer Lopez and Giuseppe Zanotti. JLo is already a singer, actress, dancer, producer, and mother of twins to boot, (no pun intended). So, with her latest collaboration along shoe designer Zanotti, the multitalented diva can add shoe designer to her endless list of occupations-making her the ultimate working mom in our books. In “Women We Admire”, we feature local as well as international women who make us all proud. Make sure to find out who made the cut. You might not have heard of the jewellery house “Hearts on Fire”, but we bet you have seen their designs adorning Hollywood’s hottest celebrities. Our London editor Daniela Bonetto sits down with Ilaria Lanzoni, the woman behind the latest designs by the jewellery brand for an exclusive insight of the house’s dazzling creations. Here’s to Us! Fashion Magic #GiuseppexJennifer By Daniela Bonetto

I see killer heels, feminine flats and what we all thought were the bygone wedged sneakers. Could they really be making a comeback? Well, I guess if the designers are shoe mogul Zanotti and super-sexy, singer JLO then YASSS! The much awaited collaboration between world-renowned Italian designer Giuseppe Zanotti and global superstar and style icon Jennifer Lopez is officially here and let me tell you, its very JLO.

“With Giuseppe, we created an ultra-modern, feminine collection of killer heels, sexy flats and fashion-forward sneakers. And as you would expect, there’s just the right amount of sparkle,” says Jennifer Lopez. Last month the fashion world did a double take when the very appropriately hashtagged #GiuseppexJennifer sixpiece collection launched. It was everything one would expect from this magical duo. “It feels like me, it feels like you—it’s the perfect collaboration,” says Jennifer Lopez in a clip which gives a glimpse into the pairs working relationship, which does seem pretty perfect. “I’ve always loved how Jennifer wears my shoes and admired her innate sense of style,” says Giuseppe Zanotti. Could this partnership have been a no brainer then?

“More than a muse, Jennifer was a great design partner and this collection really represents a strong, sensual, sophisticated woman-just like Jennifer,” adds Zanotti. Longtime admirers of each other’s work and style, the two talents began working last summer on the contemporary collection that melds Jennifer Lopez’s signature style with Giuseppe Zanotti’s iconic design codes. “I, like so many other women, love a great pair of shoes,” says Jennifer. “Whether I’m walking the red carpet, performing on stage or meeting my girls for lunch on a day off, shoes pull a look together and literally and figuratively lift me up”. Throughout the collection we get a good sense of what JLO likes and doesnt like in a shoe. “That color will be amazing,” Lopez says in the clip as she points to a swatch of gold leather. “I like the height—it’s nice and high, but comfy,” she says trying on a spectacular strappy pair of python kneehigh sandals. “A little metal plate with

something special,” Lopez suggests for a tiny hint of glint at the sole of the shoes. If the six pieces are anything to go by we can see that Ms. Lopez isnt a big fan of chunky heels or any shoe that feels and looks heavy. In fact whats on offer is pretty sleek, refined, and feminine... with a bit (or a lot) of sparkle. Cast in a modern color palette of cool grays, warm taupes, navy blue and pretty pastels and crafted in luxury materials, like suede, satin, printed leather and all-over crystal, the line-up features very distinct models. “For me a shoe is more than an accessory, its like a precious, beautiful piece of art,” says Giuseppe Zanotti, “a fine jewel that can transform the woman wearing it”. That’s what fashion magic is! A stiletto fantasy. giuseppezanotti.com

PERSON OF FLAIR

ILARIA LANZONI SETTING HEARTS ON FIRE By Daniela Bonetto

Who is Ilaria Lanzoni? This flamboyant, red headed Italian who has helped put the sparkle in so many hearts and continues to make headlines with celebrities sporting her designs? Deep down, she is still just a small town gal who had the vision, creativity and passion to follow her dreams. I met Ilaria over a decade ago when we were both still trying to find ourselves in this world. We both lived in London and thanks to a common friend would meet up socially and dance the nights away. But that was the past. Fast forward to 2017 and Ilaria is now living in New York City and at the design helm of Hearts On Fire, one of the most prominent diamond manufacturers and jewellery design companies in the world. But that wild-haired girl with the infectious joie de vivre who I met years ago over a pizza still remains the same.

Aerial Single Diamond Pendant

Daniela Bonetto: How would you describe yourself? Ilaria Lanzoni: Oh this is such a difficult question! To be honest, I am naturally shy (everyone will laugh at that, but it’s true!) but I also love excitement and adventure. I am passionate and creative, but also humble, intuitive and appreciative. Overall, I just feel so incredibly lucky. I am a woman/designer who is living her dream – and sometimes it feels surreal. I see my creations in top fashion magazines on the Red Carpet with celebrities every single day…and I am overcome by emotions every single time. DB: How has the notion of diamond jewellery changed? What is the next trend? IL: When it comes to diamond jewellery, the best thing is that it does not really change as much as other jewellery or fashion trends. Diamonds themselves are truly timeless and a classic investment that will last a lifetime. However, what we try and do as a brand, and myself as a designer, is pay attention to all of the other trends in the fashion world and see how we can connect our designs to those trends in a seamless way. This is a big change– just five or so years ago diamond brands were developing only very classic designs with little focus on more fashion forward collections. My goal since joining HOF has been to take the design to another level and truly connect with the trends women love around the world, but still keep the beautiful, timeless appeal of diamonds intact.

DB: How important is jewellery to an outfit? IL: Jewellery, to me, is just as important as any other accessory. Your jewellery complements your outfit and allows you to quickly change your look from casual to professional to dressy and chic – all depending on the occasion or your mood. A pair of diamond studs is the most sought after investment piece for women around the world – they look good with any outfit and will last forever. DB: Congratulations for Triplicity. How does this line marry diamonds with current fashion trends? IL: Thank you! To be honest, this new collection – Triplicity – is actually the most “on trend” and fashion forward collection we have created. The triangle motif you see in this collection is fun, edgy and very modern, but the diamonds still give the designs a light, feminine feel. My goal with every collection is to find the on-trend inspiration in the fashion world, and seamlessly marry it to the classic and timeless appeal of diamond jewellery. This is not an easy task, but has been a challenge I have loved working on at HOF. Every collection offers a range of styles from simple, classic starter pieces, to more bold and modern designs (like you see in Triplicity), so there is something for every woman – no matter how conservative or fashionable she may be.

DB: Where did the inspiration come from? IL: It all began when I moved from Boston to New York City. I always find my inspiration in my travels and in the world around me. When I moved to NYC, I immediately felt a new, powerful energy in the people, the culture and the architecture that is just so hard to describe. I wanted to share that with my designs, by bringing to life what I feel is the world’s most dynamic destination. The best thing about this collection is that it not only brings to life the passion of NYC and myself, but of HOF as a brand. For example, much like the Chrysler building stands out in a New York City skyline (a building that inspired my Golden Necklace and Cuff), Triplicity designs make a woman stand out in a modern and edgy, yet still timeless and sophisticated way. And, even with such a fashionable twist, each design maintains the beautiful, aspirational feeling that you get from wearing diamond jewellery. DB: Which piece is your personal favourite from the collection? IL: This question is so hard – it is like choosing your favourite child! I truly do love and appreciate all of them, because each and every design has its own unique story and inspiration behind it. But if I had to choose one…it would be the Triplicity Lariat necklace. It is delicate and modern, but sexy and feminine at the same. Just don’t tell my other designs!

31

DB: What flair have you brought to the HOF family? IL: Besides my wild curly red hair and Italian accent? I like to think that my creativity and energy has brought a new approach to diamond jewellery. I have pushed to expand the limits and collections such as Triplicity would not exist without those boundaries being torn down. The result is true “timelessly fashionable design”, a new category of jewellery that I am proud to be connected to. DB: How are you attracting the younger generations who can’t spend a fortune on jewellery?

IL: This is one of the most important things to HOF as a brand and me as the designer. Younger generations, especially millennials, are incredibly powerful, independent and opinionated – and they want to connect to the brands they purchase from in a different way than older generations. We want to show these generations that we are a brand who is relatable, passionate and real. We rely heavily on social media conversations (myself included – I love Instagram!) and other digital media to connect, and recently released an entire new brand campaign called “Ignite Something” that is again towards reinforcing this connection. While younger people

may not have huge amounts of money to spend, they do have an appreciation of value and luxury goods. And specifically for a company like us, these generations are future engagement ring purchasers – which tends to be the first diamond jewellery purchase a young person makes. DB: How is the jewellery market different around the world? IL: This question is tricky. Jewellery trends are different all around the world – but working with HOF, I have learned that the appeal of diamonds is the same everywhere.

DB: I have noticed a lot of rose gold being used. How is rose gold having its moment? IL: Rose gold is definitely a very “in the moment”, but actually, rose gold is a timeless fashion, more so than a trend. While its popularity has increased as of late, it is a style that has been around for many years. It is so popular because rose gold is beautiful and more subtle than yellow gold, and it honestly looks great on any skin tone. Additionally, rose gold is easy to mix and match with other metal colours or styles. Personally, I love rose gold and I am so excited to be able to bring creations to life in this beautiful colour! DB: Who is the average jewellery shopper today? IL: Today, the average jewellery customer is harder to define. While men are still the primary purchaser, women (of all ages) are much more involved in the process. Women do the research and many times actually are part of the buying process, even for engagement rings. Additionally, we find that there is a growing number of women who self-purchase luxury items like

diamond jewellery… a fact that I believe is connected to the independence of women today. DB: Anything else on the horizon? IL: Sorry, but my lips are sealed! There is always more coming, and I have so many things up my sleeve for new designs and collections…but you will have to wait and see!

FASHION CLIPPINGS By Nour Ibrahim

Hutton for Bottega Who said you can’t be old and fabulous? Not Lauren Hutton, the gorgeous 73-year-old model has been making her way back onto the runway for Bottega Veneta’s 50th anniversary campaign, as the luxury Italian label tapped her to represent their historic anniversary. After returning to the catwalk for Bottega Veneta’s Spring 2017 fashion show, the model has been taking it to the next level by slaying the rest of the campaign, still modelling like the pro she always was and always will be. Just goes to show that no matter who you are, anyone at any age can be beautiful.

Prada’s “365” Let’s face it, Jude Law is one of those Britishly handsome actors we can’t get enough of, and we don’t have to. In his latest 33 second ad for Prada’s naturalistic “365” campaign, Law is flaunting the brands’ ensemble of delectable attire, whilst giving a monolog about finding the perfect spot to think and return to normality. While he is finding a way to satisfy this need, we can’t help but marvel at the beautifully produced ad, complete with both a naturalistic vibe and a British accent to boost.

Gap’s Reunion Gap ads have always been some of the most remarkable ads set to date, catching both the eyes and the ears of their audience. I’m pretty sure most of us can still recite “Ice Ice Baby” from their 1999 holiday commercial. And to think that with the help of Naomi Campbell, an original Gap model, the brand is creating an ad fit for any nostalgic aspect you still hold to your heart. By gathering the offspring of the original Gap cast, the younger generations embody their parents’ personas, wearing outfits to match their corresponding predecessor. While Naomi Campbell is the only OG to make it back into the ad, she still fits into the goofy reunion by also adorning her old outfit from the 90s ad as well. The result? The perfect recipe for fashion and nostalgia, and we love it.

Chloé’s Kids Can children’s wear get any cuter? With a focus on luxury brands to design kidswear, French label Chloé is releasing a beautiful array of fashionable sun specs for kids. Little girls couldn’t be more stylish with this new and adorable line of sunglasses that are meant to fit any child’s persona. Your toddler’s Instagram page just earned itself a few hundred more likes. “Daisy” the rightfully chosen name of the new collection, couldn’t match the aesthetic more perfectly, with their lovely retro-round designs.

Stella’s Men’s wear The highly esteemed brand Stella McCartney is finally stepping into the world of men’s fashion, all thanks to the inspiration of her beloved father and husband. Based on their own attire, McCartney has managed to create a perfect aesthetic for men’s fashion, embodying the key elements of comfort and casual style. Not taking the fashion aspect of the line too seriously, McCartney decided to have fun with the line, and represent the easier going side of men’s fashion wear. A truly well awaited step forward for the already successful fashion designer.

BEAUTY CLIPPINGS By Nour Ibrahim

Angelina’s Guerlain Can Angelina do no wrong? The actress, humanitarian and overall Aphrodite of our day and age is now heading a perfume line meant to empower and promote the ideal of women. While the elements of the aroma are still said to be under wraps, Mon Guerlain is one scent that we can’t wait for. And what better person to front the power of femininity than the glorious persona herself-Angelina Jolie. Not only is she slaying the advertising campaign, but she also happens to be donating the salary she earns from this collaboration entirely to charity. Beauty, brains, and a heart of gold, how much more feminine can you get.

Clinique’s BIY Ever find yourself wishing you had just the right amount of pigment, texture, and colour at your disposal at any time? Well Clinique’s BIY (Blend it Yourself) is the perfect solution to all your coverage needs. For only 33$ you can turn your ultra-expensive moisturizer into a quick BB cream solution. By adding a few drops of this beautiful creation to your lotions, creams or solutions you can have the perfect concealer, foundation, or BB cream for every needed occasion. Money saver and efficiency creator, this already popular make up tool is soon to become a worldwide sensation in the beauty world.

Laura Mercier’s Setting in Brown Doesn’t it frustrate you when you can find a powder or a make up in your tone and colour. The iconic Laura Mercier setting powder has listened to the frustrations of many who couldn’t find a shade that suits them in their line of best-selling setting powered. Now they are releasing it in darker shades that suits the tones for all people. These newly introduced range of brown pallets are meant to finally meet the wider range of the beauty brand’s clients that have been waiting ever so patiently. For 38$, the power to reduce oils and maintain glow is now also at the hands of the brands darker toned audience and we couldn’t be more pleased.

Nicole for Neutrogena The ageless award-winning actress, Nicole Kidman, is now fronting the face of all things natural. Given the fact that we can hardly see a wrinkle on this beauty’s face, it’s only fitting that she would represent the company Neutrogena. A big believer of skin care and the importance of SPEF, it is hard to say that no one saw this coming. In fact, we’re almost wondering why it didn’t happened sooner. We’re glad however that one skincare genius of a company finally got the idea, and allowed our and Kidman’s dreams to come true.

Beauty Products & Beast Bonjour! Now say that four more times and you got the opening to Beauty and the Beast stuck in your head. Rightly so, as we get you pumped for the release of the beautifully boxed Beauty and the Beast makeup set! In celebration of the highly esteemed French Disney Princess, the highly esteemed French beauty brand L’Oréal is unleashing this beast of a kit, fit with a pair of matching lipsticks and nail polishes to represent each major character. You can get wild with the burgundy of the Beast, get girly with the poppy pink of Misses Pots, or even glamorous with the red of the witches wilting rose. Excited is an understatement for any Disney fanatic who also happens to have a passion for makeup.

Ultimate Beauty Blender Beauty blenders- that sponge we think were using right. Let’s face it, they are difficult and hard to work with. They mix random pigments together, give of wrong textures and hard to use when you want to accurately apply in some hard to reach places. Now while some of us have given up and have resorted back to using our hands, a brand by the name of Sigma said “No, we will not give up” and they didn’t. So today we are proud to announce the world of beauty sponges has changed with the introduction of Sigma’s 3DHD beauty blender. For only 15$, Sigma is teaching us how to blend right by providing us with a revolutionary version of the sponge that is not only angled at one side, making it easier to reach those hard to reach places, but also provided with 2 different textures, which are made to fulfill all your blending needs. Larger, cheaper, and much more efficient than the average beauty blender, this lump of makeup gold is a soon to be must have in the beauty industry.

Female Fashion Force Women and fashion go hand in hand, it’s impossible to envision one without the other. Yet, very surprisingly, male designers dominate the fashion industry, and while we’re not complaining, it’s sad to see an industry so predominantly dependent on female consumption to not be controlled by, well- females! The centuries long stigma of women not being capable of handling big businesses is still dragging itself through to the year 2017. Still, there is a glimmer of hope in the horizon. For the past few years, female fashion creative directors have been swooping in the fashion front and debunking sexist ideas, proving to us that women can be just as direct, smart, and ingenious as men when it comes to women’s fashion design. I mean lets face it, who knows how to dress a woman better than another woman? We celebrate fashion’s fabulous pioneers who shaping the high fashion world and in high heels too. By Nour Ibrahim

Michèle Huiban & Bouchra Jarrar Lanvin Lanvin is great example of a women dominated brand. Not only was the founder Jeanne Lanvin a self-made female, but so are the current CEO and Creative Director of the French design house. This makes Lanvin one of the few brands that have had this amount of female leadership ever throughout its history. Michèle Huiban, current CEO, has been successfully running company since 2013, after the sudden resignation of Thierry Andretta. There was almost no hesitation to appoint her head of the firm, and rightfully so as they seem to have made the perfect choice. Just as boss as Huiban, Creative Director Bouchra Jarrar began amazing us in March 2016 with her skills of cuts and fabrics, mastering the art of making clothes for women- by women. It’s wonderful to see that through the midst of the long history of sexism, one brand found its way back into the power of women.

Maria Grazia Chiuri Dior Up until last year, the luxury Parisian house of Dior had never had a female creative director in its long history. So, when the first creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri Dior took over the reins and recently showed her first runway collection, she took the job with full feminine pride. Literally, she designed t-shirts that the Dior models strutted down the runway saying “We Should All Be Feminists”. Talk about a hero springing out of the shadows. The experienced designer began her career at Valentino and it’s safe to say that she has had a successful career since then. The bold and beautiful fashion fanatic is most definitely the perfect cure for the still dragging stigma of sexism.

Stella McCartney And we thought Paul McCartney had talent! Since her brands rise in 2001, Paul McCartney’s daughter Stella McCartney has been nothing but a household name. Gaining real recognition in 1997 when she was appointed creative director for Chloé, the prodigy became a pioneer in the world of women owned fashion brands when she launched her namesake label, bringing the world into the light of fashionably chic style. Designing her first jacket at the young age of 13, the prodigy seems to have always had a passion for fashion, and we get to benefit from the result. With a successful women’s line and an ongoing collaboration with sportswear giant Adidas, Stella has recently also launched her first men’s collection. Who says women can’t design for men too?

Sarah Burton Alexander McQueen If we’re going to talk fashion royalty, we should probably bring up Sarah Burton, the queen of feminine fashion. Designing for the likes of Michele Obama and Lady Gaga, the woman has done it all. Straight after graduation, the young designer became McQueen’s personal assistant and continued to move up from there. After McQueen’s death in 2010, Burton became the immediate choice, successfully taking over the firm, becoming one of the most admired designers in the industry. Her most notable design to date, however, was most definitely Princess Catherine “Kate” Middleton’s wedding dress. All media outlets almost burst with approval when the hyped-up wedding gown was finally released to the public. Not only did the gorgeous gown meet the expectations, it exceeded it. The fashion fatale is most definitely a top-notch force to be reckoned with.

Mary Katrantzou Mary Katrantzou created her own namesake brand through a route of pure practice and hard work. She quickly shined through even when she was still a student due to her famous and innovative use of digital prints in her designs. Unsurprisingly, she went on to graduate in MA Fashion from the prestigious Central Saint Martins with distinction. The self-made designer is a text book example of how hard work, determination, and innovation can take you to your highest of heights. With her instantly recognizable designs, a Mary Katrantzou creation will surely make you stand out in the crowd. Master of patterns and textures, this fashion forward pioneer is a true soldier in the battle for equality

Chaumet’s

Insolence

Photography by: Karen Collins

A seductive hide-and-seek is portrayed in “Insolence”, the new High Jewellery and Fine Jewellery collection by French luxury house Chaumet. “Insolence” tells the story of a diamond ribbon and a rose gold rope chain that meet to intertwine, tie and untie in a whimsical game of duality. A classic at first glance, this jewellery tale reveals a free-spirit. The bow-knot, on the verge of being undone, evokes light-hearted transgressions. Spontaneous and carefree, the Insolence collection celebrates a femininity, which is sensual, hedonistic, and ready to embrace all of life’s pleasures.

Inspired by the ribbons dear to Queen Marie-Antoinette and the jewelled garlands of the Belle Epoque, Chaumet’s bow-knots have always symbolised the bonds of love and affection in the tradition of sentimental jewellery. The eternal tie between two beings, the knot that is carefully tied and presented to the world claims a pledge of serene love. Supple and nonchalantly woven, it is easily undone in intimacy, with Insolence.

INTERVIEW

Magical Moments Jean Heather Smith By Sarah Hassan

Family portraits are all about capturing these magical moments with the ones you care for the most. They become treasured reminders that you could keep and cherish throughout the years. However, many of us do not realise the fact that snapping the perfect photo can turn into a complete nightmare if you do not plan it through. We talk to Dubai-based family photographer Jean Heather Smith to know more about this booming photography niche and to give us an exclusive insight behind the scenes she enjoys the most.

How long have you been a photographer? I studied at IIAP - International Institute of Art and Photography in 2013 in Dubai, which was three years ago when I was pregnant with my son. So I guess you could say I have been a trained photographer since then, however I have always been taking amateur photos of family and friends and editing them in Photoshop as graphic design is my background.

Why did you choose family photography as a career? Families are where the joy is, it is so easy to find happiness in a photo with a child or a family. I do a little product photography also, working on a few styled shoots for companies in Dubai but it doesn’t give me the same excitement as when I am shooting for a family.

How would you describe your photographic style? I am still finding my style and I am sure my style will continue to evolve over the years; however my heart is definitely drawn to ‘documentary style’, the un-posed, natural, story-telling photography. I love black and white photos also; I usually give my clients almost half of their session in B&W. Something about a B&W photo just resonates with me. What do you want to achieve with your photographs and how do you manage to get your photos to do that? I want my photographs to be memories captured for families to look back on for years to come. I want them to be able to remember the way they felt at exactly that moment even if it was years previous. I try not to pose my families, although I will do a few with the whole family looking at the camera with smiles on, but what I mostly ask for is to interact, play, laugh and act as natural as they can with each other. That’s where the magic happens. That is where I capture them at their best. What’s the best part of being a family photographer? Spending time with a family. I love meeting new people, and I love seeing newborns interacting with their brothers and sisters. I am always asking questions about the family, I love chatting and having fun alongside them. I also love the freedom that photography gives me; I can be in one place for a shoot and somewhere completely different the next. I’m also exploring parts of Dubai that I have never before ventured to. Thank God for Google Maps. For me photography is an art and I can create art on a daily basis. I am never bored with it.

What are the biggest challenges of being a family photographer? Newborns can be the biggest challenge at times as their needs are erratic and important; a hungry baby is not a happy baby nor is a baby who needs their diaper changed. I must be patient and allow time for feeding and changing. At the end of the day it is the children/babies who decide how the photo-shoot will unfold, however saying that, a screaming baby can also make for the cutest photo! What inspires you or influences you the most? There is a group of American ladies who run the ‘Beauty Revived Campaign’ where they donate photo-shoots for deserving people finding their inner beauty. It is a non-profit company and what they do truly inspires me. A lot of the women in the group are ‘documentary style photographers’ who I admire and am totally inspired by daily. I have volunteered myself as a photographer for the next edition of ‘Beautiful Mothers’, where I will be shooting a lovely mother for a desert photo-shoot that should be ready by April. The wonderful Amani Alshaali will be there mentoring and assisting me on the day of the shoot… she also totally inspires me. She is an amaz-

ing photographer from the UAE. I am sure her workshops will definitely influence my photography in the future. Describe how a typical photo-shoot looks like? A typical shoot usually lasts 2-3 hours. If it involves a newborn then it may take a little longer. I am usually on location at either a park or in the client’s home. I encourage the family to play and interact with each other as naturally as possible, I am there to just observe and capture the moments. I try to interfere as little as possible. I’ll then go and edit the photographs and create an online gallery where the family can choose which photos they would like to print. What tips or advice do you have for aspiring family photographers? Go do a short course. Just do it! Learn how to use your camera in Manual Mode, even your own family photographs will blossom from that. Practice, practice, practice. Take your camera everywhere. Learn an editing program such as Lightroom or Photoshop, that’s where you can do some really amazing things. Then if you find you love it as much as I do then you will be forever a photographer. jeanheathersmith.com

HOT ADDRESS

Effortless Elegance La Forêt Noire

When it comes to fine dining, a carefully cultivated atmosphere can be equally as important as what is being served. From rooftop restaurants such as New York City’s famous Gallow Green boasting stellar city views to eclectically themed restaurants such as the Barbie Café in Taipei, featuring magenta décor and Barbie-themed latte art, it is clear that set and setting can make or break the dining experience. Enter La Forêt Noire, a wonderful blend of refinement, old world charm and mind blowing cuisine.

Located in Chaponost, France and designed by Lyon-based Studio Claude Cartier, La Forêt Noire cultivates a fine dining experience that is simultaneously elegant and quirky, upscale yet casual. Featuring classic black-and-white checkerboard flooring, sumptuous textiles, precious accents, and refined French fare, the charm is in the details at La Forêt Noire. Situated in an artisanal area near the Chanapost train station, the industrial, hard-worn exterior is a pleasing contrast to the restaurant’s warm, contemporary interior. Featuring high ceilings and an open kitchen, the interior is reminiscent of the subtle glamour of the 1950’s French Rivera. Checkerboard and hardwood floors contrast beautifully with the varied array of seating options: black and tan chairs and jewel green and blue dining booths, while floor-to-ceiling windows invite diners to look out into the restaurants outdoor seating area. A unique feature of the space is the ever-evolving interior profile. Due the array of colours, materials and textures used, perspective is everything. While a corner table of four features white walls and curtains’, green suede chairs and hardwood floors, a four-top in another area is characterised by black and grey patterned walls and carpet with lighting accents. Gold accents and large leafy plants located throughout the interior bring a sense of warmth cohesion to the space. While we would come for the décor alone, the restaurant menu features classic French cuisine, but with a modern twist. Menu highlights include a warm goat cheese salad with green beans, apples and walnuts, classic steak frites, cordon bleu with black forest ham, tagliatelle with mushrooms and a variety of tartes flambees, including goat cheese and honey and apples and cinnamon. For those looking to unwind, the bar offers happy hour daily, with an array of signature cocktails and craft beers available. A pleasing mix of old world French elegance and hospitality with a modern flair, La Forêt Noire is one hot address that we can’t wait to return to next time we are in Lyon.

Power Women

We don’t know about you, but many of us are tired of seeing entire films and TV series revolving around all-male characters. To mark the occasion of International Women’s Day we review our favorite Netflix TV female characters that are changing the stereotype of the dreaded female second lead. These women often break the historical Hollywood stereotypes; that break conventions on how societies believe women should behave.

Queen Elizabeth The Crown Queen Elizabeth played by Claire Foy in The Crown shows us how she balances family life with one of the most important jobs in the country. A true inspiration for us all. As a young Queen, she quickly learns how the enthusiasm and impatience of her youth can be tempered and focused by the wisdom of experience, as she is mentored in her new role by the Prime Minister and her grandmother.

Claire Underwood House of Cards They say behind every great man is a great woman, but in House of Cards, a step ahead of every great man is an impeccably dressed Claire Underwood. Her character is slightly flawed and she often comes across as manipulative, but she always stands up for what she believes in.

Piper Chapman Orange Is The New Black A firm favorite, Orange Is The New Black showcases a number of leading women from all walks of life, including Piper Chapman. The female characters in this show have sharp edges yet they are vulnerable, which enables the audience to identify with their individual struggles. These female characters show us that you can find your family anywhere and even if at first you feel out of place, eventually it will feel like you belong.

DESIGN NOTES

Better Shelter Better Lives By Daniela Bonetto

It’s Ikea, its flat-pack and therefore instantly we should feel a shudder of disdain but this is one self-assembly project we would be happy to get our hands dirty on. Daniela Bonetto discovers why Better Shelter won design of the year. The benefits are crystal clear; Better Shelter lasts six times longer than a typical emergency tent and has already changed the lives of thousands of refugees around the world. Put simply, Ikea’s flat-pack shelter is

genius. Refugees arriving in camps aren’t being greeted with a Kallax shelving unit or a Hemnes bed but an entire flat-pack refugee shelter. And its innovation has not gone under the radar. In fact the Swedish furniture giant invention has just been crowned by London’s Design Museum. Better Shelter designed by Johan Karlsson, Dennis Kanter, Christian Gustafsson, John van Leer, Tim de Haas, Nicolò Barlera, the IKEA Foundation and UNHCR has been

named the Beazley Design of the Year. Now in its ninth year, the annual award and exhibition curated and hosted by the Design Museum in London has included previous winners such as the London 2012 Olympic Torch and the Barack Obama Hope poster. Selected as the winner of the Architecture category, the Better Shelter pipped the five other category winners to claim the overall prize.

Better Shelter is a social enterprise bringing design industry innovation to emergency and temporary shelter. The project has developed safer, more dignified homes for those who have been displaced due conflict and natural disasters. Featuring a lockable front door and a solar powered wall, the shelter utilises flat-pack technology used in furniture design and has repurposed it to create a shelter that can be easily assembled and transported. Flatpacked in a two-box kit along with all the required tools, the shelter is easily assembled in about four hours. The photovoltaic panel provides enough energy to power the supplied light or to charge a mobile phone. 30,000 Better Shelters’ are already in use around the world and the judges chose Better Shelter as a clear demonstration of scalable design that has the ability to make a worldwide impact.

“Better Shelter tackles one of the defining issues of the moment: providing shelter in an exceptional situation whether caused by violence and disaster. Sadly, we have seen many instances recently where temporary shelter was necessary. Providing not only a design but secure manufacture as well as distribution makes this project relevant and even optimistic. It shows the power of design to respond to the conditions we are in and transform them. Innovative, humanitarian and implemented, Better Shelter has everything that a Beazley Design of the Year should have. Nanjing Rising Vertical Forest By Kate Dannies

As our world becomes increasingly developed and industrialised, issues related to environmental protection and sustainability become increasingly pressing. Abnormal fluctuations in weather patterns, rising sea levels and species extinction have prompted architects, designers and developers alike to find sustainable and eco-friendly solutions to our worlds growing development needs, exemplified by the development of novel concepts such as urban green spaces and green vertical towers. An exciting new development takes the concept of green vertical towers—buildings with green elements incorporated into the exterior—and tailors it to meet the growing environmental needs in Nanjing, China. The Nanjing green tower project is headed by Stefano Boeri Architetti, an Italian architectural firm that pioneered the green tower concept with the development of the Borsco Verticale, a 27-storey structure in that is home to the world’s first vertical forest. Located in Milan, Italy, the Bosco Verticale is a pair of residential towers hosting around 20,000 square metres of forest and undergrowth, including 480 large and medium trees, 300 small trees, 11,000 perennial and covering plants and 5,000 shrubs. In addition to being visually pleasing, the green vertical tower concept is a living system aimed at optimising, recuperating and producing energy while filtering the outdoor air. Covered in plant life, the building balances the microclimate in the area while filtering dust particles and pollutants, as China is one of the most polluted country’s in the world. Plant diversity and characteristics help to produce humidity, absorb CO2 and dust particles while producing oxygen and protecting the building from radiation and pollution. In terms of Nanjing Towers, the two towers were chosen due to their location in the Nanjing Pukou District, an area that will likely pioneer modernisation efforts in China’s Jiangsu province and help develop a Yangtze River economic zone. The taller, 656 foot tower will hold offices, a museum, a green architecture school and a rooftop club, while the smaller tower will house a 247-room Hyatt hotel and rooftop swimming pool. An adjacent 65-foot podium will include shops, restaurants and a conference hall, while balconies on the buildings will allow inhabitants to experience the green tower first-hand. Due for completion in 2018, the structures will feature 1,000 trees from 23 local species and 2,500 cascading shrubs and plants, and produce around 132 pounds of oxygen daily in addition to absorbing significant levels of carbon dioxide. As the first vertical green tower in both China and all of Asia, Stefano Boeri Archietti plans to expand the vertical forest design to Shanghai, Guizhou, Shijiazhuang, Liuzhou and Chongqing. The concept will also continue to be popularised with a book published by Tongji University Press, A Forest City, due for release in April 2017.

EXHIBITIONIST

Fforit

Royalty D ia n a : H e r F a s h io n S t o r y

When it comes to modern-day royalty, few figures are more iconic or well loved than the late Princess Diana of Wales. While the end of her life was plagued with scandal, Diana was highly regarded for her extensive charity work and patronage both in her home country and overseas, in addition to being a style icon of her time. In homage to her wonderfully full—and stylish—life, a new dress exhibition is being shown at Kensington Palace. By Kate Dannies Debuting on February 24th, 2017, Diana: Her Fashion Story traces the progression of the Princesses style, from the conservative yet classic outfits of her first public appearances to the glamorous elegance her style conveyed later in life. In addition to offering information about Diana’s life and style, the exhibit features an extensive collection of her

garments worn throughout her public life as Princess of Wales. Tracing back to Diana’s teen years, the exhibit features the first public images of her as Prince Charles love interest, with photos featuring her in a backlit transparent skirt. It is clear from the exhibit that Diana learned the style ropes

quickly, however, as exemplified in subsequent photos of her in the iconic outfits such as the Bellville Sassoon dress, a brightly coloured floral piece that she often wore on her visits to children’s hospitals. It is clear from the exhibit that Diana quickly adapted to her role in the public life; the exhibit features a boxy green coat Diana wore to Venice that was bagged by the press and was never worn again, and her early passion for ruffles was quickly curbed as she found they photographed badly. This led to her adapting to signature sleek, fitted suits and cocktail dresses that she is now famous for. Diana’s style continued to evolve as she became more comfortable with her royal title, and the exhibit notes she often broke protocol in more ways than one, dressing with deliberate informality to convey approachability and making controversial visits to patients with HIV. The exhibit also highlights more personal moments, featuring a mid-80’s silk velvet skirt marked by hundreds of tiny indents believed to be fingerprints made by her sons Princes William and Harry. Glamour, intrigue and a heavy dose of scandal, Diana’s life as Princess of Wales was anything but dull. Featuring a dizzying array of gowns, suits and cocktail dresses worn by the Princess throughout her life, Diana: Her Fashion Story is a wonderful look into the life and style of Princess Di. While the showing is aimed at providing

the viewer an insight into her style and how it was influenced by both her public and personal life, it also highlights Diana’s post-humorous influence on the world of fashion. Timeless and unique, Diana’s status as a fashionista can be seen in recent trends such as pie-crust collar blouses, hotpink sheathe dresses and pearl-trim cocktail wear.

FLAIR REVIEW

Mince’s New Special Pulled BBQ Beef Burger By Sarah Hassan

After a very long day at work, I was craving to eat one of those tasty divine Mince burgers I have been hearing about for quite a while. Surprisingly, it was my first time ever to try the handmade burgers’ restaurant, and it definitely won’t be my last. Heading into the Zamalek branch I was intrigued by some of the Mince’s new menu offerings such as the Crab Salad and the Sausage Burger. I decided to go for the Mince’s newest special Pulled BBQ Beef Burger-and it did not disappoint. As I was ignoring my growling tummy, I spot the waiter coming from the kitchen towards my table with a tall unusual burger. A burger that my stomach was calling for from a far distance. The first component that caught my eyes was of the burger’s thick greenish crunchy-like lettuce standing out from

the sandwich. Then I noticed the burger was packed with its rich allumette fries. Yes, a burger of fries! The restaurant is known for its burgers that are made with premium imported beef, so I was impatiently waiting to get a bite of this beauty’s main component; its marinated grilled brisket shredded with Mince’s homemade BBQ sauce! Yum yum! As I tried my best to take a bite of the tall burger, I could taste its juicy-moist beef filled with its rich BBQ sauce. The burger was extremely juicy that it was oozing sauce. But a juicy burger is a juicy burger; no matter how messy it can get- its taste is what matters most. And this burger was extremely appetizing that you could taste the richness of every single ingredient with each bite. I for sure can’t wait for my next visit to try Mince’s other new specials.
