INTERVIEW

Homeworks Comes To Egypt

Ideally located in Cairo Festival City, Al-Futtaim’s newest home improvement brand “Homeworks” has arrived in Cairo to shake up the home improvement market entirely in Egypt. We sat down with Al-Futtaim’s Retail Country Manager Esam Hafez to know more about the company’s new killer home brand with over 70 Million Egyptian pounds in investments. By Sarah Hassan

Tell us a little bit more about Homeworks

Homeworks is known for the ‘do it yourself’ ‘DIY’ concept, which is known worldwide but mainly in West Europe, Canada, and USA, where you can usually find it in big stores specialized in home improvement products. People abroad are more accustomed to this concept as it is less time and effort consuming. So this concept basically consists of divisions and subdivisions. The main divisions are 1- Home living which includes everything about home improvement including the kitchen, the bathroom, and the floor. 2- Outdoor living where you need to include furniture, BBQ equipment, camping tools and so on. 3- Home improvement: including DIY which you will mainly find power and hand tools, while the power tools revolve around anything that deals with electricity, the hand tools are like screwdrivers and similar tools. 4- Garden which includes plants and all gardening accessories.

How are Homeworks’ services different to IKEA?

We don’t compete with IKEA, we complement each other. However, Homeworks isn’t similar to IKEA; as for example, if you just moved to a new home that needs to be furnished, you will first head to Homeworks to buy your tools, appliances, equipment, paint, etc. to fix and adjust your home. Once done, then you head to IKEA for furnishing options

How does Homeworks fill a market’s need?

Here in Egypt, when people need to buy something for their home, they usually head to several different places; while they still do not get a consistent world-class retail experience. By identifying this market gap, we decided to invest in this business, to offer people one shopping destination for all their needs for their homes, be it essential tools, decorative items, outdoor furniture or gardening accessories, etc.

How does Homeworks fill the needs across the different classes of customers out there?

In our plan, we included three price levels for each product category. We don’t call these levels A, B, and C but we call them Good, Better, and Best. So you can find the product you want with three different prices. It does not mean that expensive products have better quality. The quality of our products is very critical. It just means that the product with the higher price will offer you more options. On the other hand, our priority at this time is to focus on the positioning of Homeworks brand rather than the profit/pay back.

How does Homeworks stay up-to-date with the latest trends?

Our products’ experts have long-rooted business relations with the top brands in home improvement products, locally and internationally – as we also deal with the top producers of several home products in Egypt. You will find the top brands in each category in Homeworks. We also monitor the feedback of the market through customers to respond to consumer needs and continue to be up-to-date. Our store associates, who are also trained to assist customers to ensure a rewarding shopping experience, play a huge role in updating us with the customers’ feedback in order to add, remove, edit based on customers’ needs. Also our DIY concept which allows customers the opportunity to experience the products before buying will help us in a better understanding for our consumers’ needs to successfully align with their requirements and expectations.

How many Homeworks branches are you planning to open in Egypt?

We definitely plan to expand to cover the whole country. We are starting with three key branches; two in East Cairo and one in West Cairo. We have opened our first branch and aiming to open up to 15 branches all over Egypt.

FEATURE

Trendsetting and Jetsetting How to Travel in 2017 When it comes to travel trends for 2017, adventurers are opting for experience over expense. Indeed, whether booking a solo ticket to a far-flung locale, splurging on an unforgettable local travel experience, or squeezing in sightseeing between business meetings, adventurers are looking for new and unique ways to tailor travel experiences to fit their needs. By Kate Dannies

Redefining Luxury Instead of valuing traditional definitions of luxury, such as gold-leaf headboards and champagne baths, travellers are opting for getaways customized to fit their unique interests, from off-grid surfing excursions in Liberia to crafting custom tea blends in Sri Lanka. With a focus on simplicity, tailored experiences and a ‘less is more’ sentiment, 2017 is all about getting in touch with your own definition of luxury.

Mixing Business with Pleasure Now known as ‘bleisure’ travel, mixing business with pleasure is a growing trend, with companies increasingly incorporating incentive trips into employee benefit packages. With options to extend travel for personal trips and invite family members along, bleisure travel offers business travellers a chance to immerse themselves in local cultural experiences after that last meeting of the day.

Tech-centric Travel With the ubiquitous smartphone now a mainstay when it comes to travel accessories, apps can go a long way in enhancing the travel experience. Indeed, apps have come a long way from simple transactions such as hotel bookings, with the TripIt app seamlessly managing travel itinerary, points and mileage awards, and the Four Seasons app offering hotel check in, room service ordering and even maintenance requests. Other apps such as EatWith, which connects you with locals who cook for you in their home with other guests, allow you to get insider experiences when you visit a new city and meet new people in the process.

27

Solo Excursions With a rise in gender-specific retreats and travel companies, 2017 is witnessing an uptick in solo travel, especially when it comes to women adventurers. Travel outfits such as Women Only Tours offer exploration packages for women in places such as India, Peru and Morocco, while operators such as Friendship Travel offer a chance to connect with like-minded people in settings ranging from intimate to exploratory.

Small and Family-run Properties With an increasing desire for a more unique, intimate experience, travellers are opting to stay at smaller boutique hotels and family-run resorts that offer deeper local connections. Promising a more immersive and authentic experience, these smaller outfits offer more customized options when it comes to day trips and recommendations, while family-run properties offer a greater sense of care and comfort than larger corporate resorts.

Travel Curators While technology has opened up the travel market in meaningful ways, the plethora of options available at the click of a button can be overwhelming. Instead of spending weeks cultivating the perfect travel package, seasoned travel advisors can give invaluable advice on factors that are hard to quantify, such as comparing the quality of nightlife or dining experiences between various potential destinations.

Ecotourism Falling in line with a rising focus on sustainability and environmental conservation, adventurers are looking to low-impact travel as a way to experience sustainable practices first hand. Eco lodges have become particularly, giving visitors a chance to stay in a pristine natural environment that offers education on renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, locally cultivated food and water conservation.

ORIGINAL EXPERIENCES Most of us travel today. Be it for work, pleasure or necessity it is ordinary to discuss the next ticket in hand with your next-door neighbour or best friend. But what is most important is not the amount of miles accrued on your card but the enduring, meaningful experiences ones amasses along the way. Those that capture the soul and remain in your heart as time passes. Those original experiences that stay with you long after you’ve returned home. Destination Dominican Republic

By Amy N. Pugsley Photography by Krissie Sullivan de Henriquez

The Dominican Republic is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean. Visited by over five million people a year, the small island of Hispaniola is home to both Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Neighbouring Cuba and Puerto Rico just 900 miles from the American state of Florida this hot travel destination is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Most vacationers opt for the big all-inclusive resorts to get the most bang for their buck but the island has many ‘off the beaten path’ destinations that make leaving the resort worth it. Below are four of the best places to visit and what to do when you get there.

Santo Domingo Santo Domingo is the capital city of the Dominican Republic and one of the most historic cities in the new world. Christopher Columbus, yes him, established the first Spanish colony in 1492 and the old colonial city still stands today on the banks of the Atlantic. What was once a Spanish colonial city is now a bustling metropolis of old and new and has many attractions that make it a must visit for international tourists. Located on the south side of the island, the city is home to about three million people and more history than one can soak in. If you are visiting, plan for about two to three days in the capital to see all the sights. First stop needs to be the Malecon (Corniche) to watch the blues waves roll in and to eat delicious Dominican food at one of the many restaurants or food vendors. Second stop needs to be the Zona Colonial (Colonial Zone) to see the first Catholic church in the new world, to walk up and down the cobblestone streets and to take in the breathtaking Spanish architecture. Stop three needs to be the Museo de Arte Moderno (Modern Art Museum) to see brilliant works of art by Dominican and international artists.

Cabarete Located on the Dominican Republics north coast in the province of Puerto Plata, Cabarete is a small cozy surf town that is known for its amazing water sports and abundance of expatriates. With miles of post card-esque coast line, Cabarete is an authentic escape from the large resorts that are plastered along the east side of the island. Known for its idyllic water sport conditions, people from all over the world come to Cabarete each year to surf, kitesurf, windsurf, paddleboard, and canoe. If your looking for an adventure in the D.R. then Cabarete is the place to book a lesson or hone your skills if you’re already a pro. The conditions for kitesurfing are almost always perfect and on any given day you will see thirty or more colourful kites high in the sky. On the blue waves, you will see windsurfers and paddleboarders, and on the beach, you will see people from all over the world relaxing, drink in hand. This town has a bohemian chic vibe and is a must visit when you’re in the D.R.

Samaná Samaná is a small town located on the coast of Samaná Bay east of Cabarete on the northeastern part of the island. If the hustle and bustle of Santo Domingo or the water sports in Cabarete don’t entice you then this sleepy town will have you packing you bags. An eco tourists dream, Samaná is described by many as a natural treasure filled with coves, bays, waterfalls, mountains, lush greenery, and spectacular views. January through March is whale season and commercial whale watching tours are a popular once in a lifetime experience; now considered to be one of the top ten destinations in the world to observe the threatened North Atlantic Humpback whales. After whale watching, visitors can experience the protected virgin forests of Los Haitises National Park and kayak through mangroves and take in the exotic flora and fauna. For those looking for some true R& R this is the spot for your ultimate Dominican vacation.

Casa de Campo Casa de Campo can be compared to Dubai for its glamour or the Hamptons for its upscale clientele and posh affluence. Casa de Campo or “Country House” in English is a tropical seaside resort in La Romana on the southeast side of the island. Developed in 1975, this spectacular area has over 1, 700 private villas making it one of the countries wealthiest communities. An enclave of glamor for the rich and famous, Casa de Campo has it all, from upscale shopping to immaculate golf courses to pristine beaches. International stars Drake and Akon have shot music videos there and each year big name artists like Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull, and more put on concerts backdropped by palm trees and ocean breezes. If you don’t mind brushing shoulders with the who’s-who of the Caribbean then Casa de Campo is for you.

With so much acclaimed success it was only a matter of time before Airbnb transformed a corporate office space into a traditional Parisian loft that feels like home. “Our goal was to authentically represent both Airbnb and Parisian culture and create a space that feels like home to both employees and our guests. You can truly feel that from the moment you walk in the front door.” - Rebecca Ruggles, Airbnb Environments Team Airbnb unveils its new office in Paris designed in collaboration with architectural design practice, STUDIOS Architecture. The new office continues to develop Airbnb’s ‘Belong Anywhere’ ethos with spaces that foster connection, creativity and communal working, whilst embracing Parisian culture. The office also caters for regular hosted events open to the public with an original hospitality lounge, a new element to Airbnb office design. With a traditional mansard roof, a variety of levels and atypical corners, the office resembles a quaint attic loft synonymous with Parisian city architecture. Instead of Airbnb’s usual neighbourhood working models seen in Dublin and San Francisco, the Airbnb Environments Team incorporated the unique character of the Paris office into the space design by turning it into a Parisian home over 2 floors, complete with a foyer, salon, bibliothèque and cuisine. The Environments Team formulated the concept design and worked with STUDIOS to develop the final design and execute the project. Designed for 60 employees the office provides various work configurations and spaces including sit-stand desks, private phone booths and a hospitality lounge. All spaces are configured for communal working and employees can

sit at large custom-designed tables. This variety in working arrangements encourages creative interaction and the large communal tables typical of an Airbnb office facilitates sharing in a way that individual desks cannot. Hosting and inviting guests is a priority for the local team and the hospitality lounge was designed with that purpose in mind, functioning as a multipurpose event space that is flexible and able to accommodate various group sizes and needs. Named “Le Nid”, the space will be open to the public through specific programming, monthly events hosted by the local team including meetups around destinations, debates on travel trends, as well as exclusive Experiences. Stepping out of the elevator on the 6th floor, visitors are transported into a luminous, vegetation-filled solarium. Taking inspiration from historical greenhouses, this bright and open transitional space offers the comforts of an intimate roof garden. The cuisine is the heart and soul of the Paris office. It is a communal space for gathering that helps employees to stay connected. This builds on a tradition that the local employees already practice where staff make a point of eating together every day, creating a genuine sense of family and home. During construction, the team discovered existing skylights and original wood beams which they were able to expose and incorporate into the new design to offer a more open and airy kitchen space. Cove lighting can also be found interspersed throughout office designed to help elevate the low ceilings and bring more light into a previously dark space. As part of Airbnb’s global office design narrative, the meeting room designs are inspired by existing Airbnb listings around the world; in this instance, China, Tasmania, Morocco, USA and UK. The Environments Team engaged with local

37

employees in an Employee Design Experience (EDX) programme to help add the finishing touches to each meeting room. Features include a moss wall that replicates a listing in Moganshan, China, and vintage door panels sourced from an old barn in Normandy to mirror a listing in West Hobart, Tasmania. Employees can also visit the ‘espace zen’, a peaceful space designed to provide employees with a restful area for quiet reflection or a quick nap. The Espace Zen features a deep built-in sofa with large plush pillows and a private balcony. The Airbnb Environments Team and STUDIOS found inspiration for the design concept through exploring local restaurants, hotels and flea markets. Feeding into Airbnb’s commitment towards supporting local entrepreneurs and makers, the Paris office is a microcosm of character, history and eclectic styles. The furniture in the office was largely sourced from local flea markets and through Espace des Particuliers, a local company which upcycles vintage pieces. These vintage finds are complemented by contemporary French designer furniture from the likes of the Bouroullec Brothers and Jean Prouve. Iconic chairs from Parisian gardens like the Tuileries also make an appearance. “It was a real pleasure co-creating with the Airbnb Environments Team to design a truly unique working environment that embodies both the rich diversity of the Airbnb travel experience and the one of a kind charm of Paris.” - Kristin Gratacap, STUDIOS Architecture Photography by: Donal Murphy Architecture Photography by: Donal Murphy airbnb.com

PERSON OF FLAIR

The Storyteller Salim Azzam Salim Azzam might hail from a small village in Mount Lebanon but his work has been making big waves in Beirut and beyond. An illustrator by trade, and more recently a fashion designer, Salim considers himself a storyteller, weaving intricate stories through his illustrations and designs. By Sarah Hassan

How do you carry out your “storytelling” through the mediums of illustration, graphic design, and fashion design?

I had a degree in graphic design and I enjoyed and loved the major. Then I grew up and lived in the mountains and after graduating I started illustrating elements from that environment to express myself. So it was not until I moved to Beirut that actually people started to call me a storyteller because what attracted them the most was those stories I got from the mountains in Beirut. So I don’t necessarily introduce myself as an illustrator because for me illustration is just a medium but I’m very much comfortable expressing myself with it but what matters is the story itself.

How important is the factor of being a “storyteller” to you?

It is very important because I honestly feel that storytelling has to connect you with people. There is something that I bring from my stories that connect you with other people or may link with someone I may know or someone’s memory, and I feel that all these stories create a network. It is very essential to all what I do and how I present and how I introduce myself. It is all about accessing interesting stories in a specific way. And I feel we are all kind of storytellers somehow.

What are the stories you wish to tell and why?

When I started illustrating, the stories came from my culture, environment, traditions, and rituals. So when I always used to tell a story, I think anything could inspire me but there is always something uncommon about my stories which I think is because they are very much into culture, identity, traditions, and environment. I never illustrated a story I don’t understand or don’t have a relation with the story itself but sometimes the stories comes from the people around me but the stories have to speak to me at the end.

Who/what inspires you?

A lot of things inspire me. My mom is my main source of inspiration; doing what she does with everything with nature and doing it with love. Nature inspires me and people as well.

After your studies in Visual Communication in Canada, why did you decide to come back and plant your roots in Lebanon once more?

The main reason I came back is because I knew people would understand and know what I do more and appreciate it.

What are the challenges, if any, that you face in your work and how do you try to overcome them?

Trying to keep my work very personal is a challenge, especially that it is growing very fast and the fact that I have a fashion line

as well. My fashion project actually started in my bedroom! I like to keep my work personal and intimate and not make it look as if it were for a business. Another challenge is production in Beirut. I put a lot of effort to find the right people to work with who love what they do. We also try to keep up with the production demand of what we do for different parties, which is a big challenge as well.

How did your first fashion line come about?

I always use fashion and design to help local communities. So the first fashion line came out with the idea of working with women who lived in different villages in the mountains - who have amazing abilities with all their skills - but they have no platforms and their skills are fading away because nobody does handmade work anymore. I took the opportunity to actually create a fashion line to tell the story about a specific need. It is a network that has so many different layers and it is a perfect example of how I want to merge my stories and illustration with a social aspect.

When it comes to your fashion pieces, they share the similar characteristics of having segments embellished with embroidery and prints on white crisp-cotton structured shirts. Why/what attracts you to that certain look?

When I designed the fashion line, the first thing that came to my mind was that I’m actually going to take the opportunity to embroider on white shirts. This first collection came out all in white as if I am illustrating on paper. And then in the second collection, I started to develop a bit more thinking on how the illustration would fit in a specific harmony so like what goes on the pocket and why on the left and not on the right and so on. So I started a marriage between the pieces itself and the illustration. I never go online - I hate it. My inspiration comes from photo albums of my mom. I remember when I did the first runway, I had found a photo of my aunt in an album wearing long white socks on a dress on a ballerina and I said that’s how we’re going to walk our models.

What can we expect from you in 2017 in terms of new collections, collaborations and/or projects?

I’m willing to do more embroidery workshops to encourage people in the field of embroidery. I also teach; I almost have a full schedule. I also like to do some branding for clients that I believe in their values.

The wide range of brightly colored drawing tools just seems like an opportunity for an endless range of makeup possibilities- and Crayola has noticed. Djewelled

Project: Maison Pyramide For Djewelled Art Direction: Ikon Chiba Photography: Batool Al Daawi Styling: Farah El Sayed MUA: Soha Khoury Hair: Toi Model: Heba Eldessouky

Just in time for the summer Djewelled is introducing its new line “Precious,” featuring polished precious and semi-precious stones, as well as diamonds and black diamonds. The new, on-going line mirrors the brand’s vision, offering fresh modern designs that make a statement. The new line cements Djewelled’s positioning as a simple and dainty jewelry brand. Fusing 18K gold, diamonds and vibrant precious and semi-precious stones, the pieces, which include rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings, combine classic finesse with a more modern twist. “It still holds the same feel of Djewelled; very simple and very wearable all-day, everyday, but it’s more fresh and colorful and it’s more highend,” said Dena Essam, the designer behind Djewelled. The main inspiration for the brand’s new line is geometric shapes. This was manifested through pieces, such as a bar ring featuring colored sapphires, emeralds and rubies and pyramid-like, cubical earrings featuring blue topaz. With the continuing trend of stackable jewelry, this line further enables young women to style and stack the pieces as they desire to make up the perfect look. “The pieces look different when you stack them up with different pieces, and I’ve always loved that,” Essam said. “That was the vision I had for Djewelled. I wanted people to come back for more because they love it and want to wear more of it.”

Djewelled is well-known for its customized fine jewelry and this line is no different. The pieces are customizable in regards to stone selection and gold color. “I took myself to a whole new level designing this line,” said the self-taught jewelry designer. “They’re pieces I would personally wear everyday, pieces that inspire me.” The launch of ‘Precious’ by Djewelled is supported with a campaign shoot conceptualized by Maison Pyramide, perfectly capturing the essence of the new line. Mimicking the fresh and vibrant air of the line, Maison Pyramide Fashion Director Ikon Chiba adopted the idea of enlarging the pieces to become life-sized objects used for summer activities. This was infused with dazzling colors that contrast those of the precious stones, emphasizing the look and feel of the beach. “I wanted to portray summer activities, but in a high fashion approach that is elegant and simple, just like ‘Precious’ by Djewelled,” said Chiba. Enlarging the pieces adds a lot to “Precious,” emphasizing all the details and work that goes into it, and amplifying the richness and splendor of the pieces.

Marble in the Sea Sanlorenzo Yacht Amongst the latest high-range creations of Italian shipyard company Sanlorenzo is the SL86 Yacht. This mega-yacht has also been designed in a version tailored to the US market with the interior design signed by American designer Marty Lowe. Inspired by the tradition of marble from Carrara where the shipyard is located, Lowe used big marble slabs to decorate the interiors and the external lounge area, focusing on the lightness and luminosity of the spaces. Wide windows, an open staircase, light colours and carefully-studied lighting create an ample, welcoming space which ensures guests maximum comfort in the sea. The designer’s aim was to play with the element of light and this is why the Le Pietre Luminose collection by Lithos Design Primes was chosen to decorate the living space with great elegance and style, creating a luminous ‘backstage’ area behind the dining space, which becomes the focal point of the open space.

HOT ADDRESS

Street Eats Compass Rose Bar + Kitchen

As the capital of the USA, Washington DC is a paradoxical city entrenched in historic American values, yet filled with immense cultural diversity. This sentiment is reflected in one of the city’s hottest restaurants, Compass Rose Bar + Kitchen. Serving a perfect array of international comfort food in a romantic DC setting, Compass Rose is one hot address we will be returning to whenever we are in the US capital. By Kate Dannies

Aiming to transport diners to exotic locales without leaving the comfort of their DC dining table, Compass Rose offers a wonderful selection of international street food alongside handcrafted cocktails, quirky beers and exotic wines in a relaxed setting. After living abroad and traveling to more than 30 countries, owner Rose Previte brought her knowledge and passion for food and culture to the DC food scene in hopes of sharing her amazing experiences. Inspired by street and market food from around the world, Compass Rose offers nightly dining for smaller groups, along with a family-style tasting menu served in a North African-style Bedouin tent, a nod to her Sahara travels, for larger groups, in addition to a brunch seating on Sundays. Upon entering, the atmosphere of Compass Rose is both comfortingly familiar and endearingly exotic. Hardwood floors

and sumptuous dinner seating are reminiscent of an upscale DC establishment, but eclectic touches, such as exposed brick and distressed shutters suggest there is more in store. Conversely, the Bedouin tent, shielded from the restaurant and decked in colourful tapestries and tableware, is another experience all together. When it comes to the food, Compass Rose has a dish to satisfy every region, from Hawaiian poke to Lebanese kefta. Served family-style, the menu a long list of dished demarcated by the country they originate from. Dinner offerings are vast and varied, with highlights including Uruguayan chivito, hanger steak and country ham sandwich with an organic egg; smorrebord from Denmark featuring housecured trout and dill-caper remoulade, and Tunisian chicken skewers with pappadew pepper and currant. Cocktail options are equally as enticing, and include inventive combinations such as the Bolivian-inspired Enter the Dragon, featuring mezcal, pink dragonfruit and dry fermented grapefruit. Sunday brunch is not to be missed, as the restaurant serves their full menu in addition to Middle Eastern shakshuka, poached eggs with tomato and piquillo pepper sauce, a FEW Breakfast Gin cocktail and bottomless prosecco.

DESIGN NOTES

Salone del Mobile.

Milano Awards By Daniela Bonetto For the second year running the prestigious, international award devised by the Salone del Mobile.Milano has announced its 11 winners. The award gives further prominence to the outstanding sectoral exhibits at last April’s 56th edition and celebrates the very best showcased by the furnishing and design world at the fair. The award is intended to recognise the value of ideas, creativity, innovation and technology that together contrive to make the event the world’s most acclaimed international vehicle for cutting edge design trends and the very latest in home living. The award is presented to well-known and emerging designers, displays and products.

“The Salone del Mobile’s idea was that this award would allow the emotions aroused by the trade fair to live on, recognising the enormous creative, productive and organisational commitment of our companies and all the designers and people who help to attract the most innovative products and manufacturing processes to Milan”, said President Claudio Luti. The awards were split into 11 categories: Best Product – Workplace3.0, Best Product – Euroluce, Best Product – xLux, Best Product – Classic, Best Display, Best Furnishing Product, Best Emerging Designer, Lifetime Achievement Award, Special Jury Prize and Special Banca Intesa Sanpaolo Prize.

The submissions were judged by a prestigious jury made up of the same prominent sectoral figures as last year, to maintain continuity of evaluation. As before, they circulated anonymously among the exhibitors at the fair to single out the contenders: Silvana Annicchiarico, Director, Triennale Design Museum, Milan; Domitilla Dardi, Design Curator, MAXXI, Rome, Massimo Mini, CEO, designboom, Ettore Mochetti, Editor, AD Italia; Margherita Palli, scenographer, Livia Peraldo Matton, Editor-in-Chief, Elle Decor Italia, and Davide Rampello, Professor of Arts and Regional Skills at Milan Polytechnic University. The 11 winners announced on 8th June, at Triennale Teatro dell’Arte were:

Best Product – Furnishing: Pack / Francesco Binfaré / Edra Because it turns a functional object into a sort of transitional metaphor: a comfortable sofa with a new take on posture, welcoming and cosy. It is also a domestic landscape that becomes a manifesto for the great changes wrought across the ages.

Best Product – Workplace3.0: Io.T / studio Gtp and Tecno For their skill in combining innovative technological features and functionality with the human relational demands of the contemporary office environment.

Best Product – Euroluce: Filo / Andrea Anastasio / Foscarini For his ability to reread tradition in a contemporary and international vein, bringing new structural meaning to the notion of decoration and personalising mass production.

Best Product – xLux: D.Vision3 / Ferruccio Laviani / F.lli Boffi For the ability to carry forward traditional classic design codes into contemporary culture. A sign of a new eclecticism that underscores the powers of craftsmanship.

Best Product – Classic: Black & White Collection / Provasi For their skill in combining contemporary materials, processes and decorations (the coverings in nubuck leather and fabric, the faintly Orientalist silver studs) and shapes drawn from the great models of the past, thus informing an original and in its own way innovative style, while maintaining continuity with traditional classical elegance.

71

Best Display: \Flos / Calvi Brambilla A display that goes beyond the traditional concept of a trade fair stand thanks to its ability to draw visitors through the light sources as if in a narration. From the exterior to the interior, where lights, colours, materials and solids and voids play out masterfully.

Special Jury Prize: Marva Griffin For her generosity and far-sightedness in believing in a project for and with young people: a massively deserved tribute to a woman to whom we are all grateful and indebted.

Best Emerging Designer: Elena Salmistraro For her ability to enable her own expressive powers of imagination to dialogue with mass production, fuelling new food for thought.

Best Designer: Philippe Starck For the consistency with which, over the years, he has created objects that speak an international language. A contemporary master who never fails to surprise.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Ernesto Gismondi For his sense of contemporaneity, his innate talent at working up boundless formal solutions that meld lightness with evocations of a near future.

Special Banca Intesa Sanpaolo Prize (institutional partner Salone del Mobile.Milano): De Castelli. For “Tracing Identity”, an inclusive project that makes the very most of the company’s manufacturing capabilities, channelling the work of designers left to interpret the raw material according to their own personal vision.

INTERVIEW

Casa Mia

Chef Carlo Frusciante

Chef Carlo Frusciante has been whipping up savoury Italian food for more than 30 years in countries near and far. Armed with an undeniable passion for authentic Italian food, he brings his passion to the latest Italian hotspot to open in Cairo in none other the prestigious Sofitel Cairo Nile El Gezirah Hotel. An all-day Italian restaurant, Casa Mia, is serving authentic Italian food with lots of flavour. We sat down for a chat with the chef as we discussed pizza, pasta, and much more!

What makes the new restaurant, Casa Mia, unique?

Almost everyone has an idea about Italian cuisine-even if it’s the correct idea or the stereotypical one. It is a very popular and well-known cuisine. As chefs working abroad, we see ourselves as ambassadors of our cultures. So it is important for us to pass on that culture. That is why my goal for guests at Casa Mia is to have an authentic Italian experience with rich flavours and great hospitality. Casa Mia-meaning “my home” will be a place with a welcoming atmosphere where guests can feel at ease and experience real Italian food with the fresh ingredients.

Italian cuisine varies from one region to another. Which region will have the greatest influence in Casa Mia?

Naturally since I’m from Campania a greater influence will come from that region. However, it is important to offer a wide spectrum of Italian food from different regions. We will have a wide range of offerings that will include lasagna, fresh tagliolini Bolognese, and pizza and pasta of course. We will change the menu every four months to suit the changing seasons, because it is very important to serve only the fresh products available in-season.

What can we expect from the menu?

The menu will have the courses in the traditional Italian meal structure. We will offer authentic Italian pizza. Generally speaking, it is not easy to find it out of Italy. There are many elements that affect the authenticity of the pizza such as quality of the water, flour, and yeast. It took me a while to reach a great Italian pizza to offer at Casa Mia. Pizza is supposed to be light street food. We have a saying in Campania (the region famous for its pizza) that “you should be able to eat pizza and still look for a little bit more”. We make sure that our dough has matured for 48 hours to mature completely and slowly in the fridge, so the pizza will feel light and delicious. A misconception about pizza is that the more ingredients it has, the better it is. But the greatness of Italian pizza is its simplicity and its high-quality fresh ingredients that complement each other. Another big part of the menu is dedicated to our in-house made pasta. Fresh pasta will be done using my recipe that results in a great colour and texture, and a rich flavour. Every pasta type will be paired with its own specific sauce as well. We will also offer ravioli, cappellacci, and classic Italian deserts such as panna cotta, tiramisu, Italian chocolate mousse, and pera ricotta tarte.

What do you most love about your job?

After many years of working as a chef, I love it when I see the kitchen organized in my way and that it works like an orchestra with everyone in the team knowing what to do and how to do it. When I reach the level of a Swiss clock watch with everything running smoothly and on time, I’m happy! I have a very methodical and detailed way of working in the kitchen. So I prepare my staff to have the same mentality and professional approach to the kitchen that I do. I also love getting positive feedback on the food from guests.

What is your favorite food to cook?

Where I come from, Campania, pasta is a major element in the kitchen and a very big deal, and I cook pasta very well. But what I love is actually cooking rice and making risotto, which is a food more typical of the north!

FLAIR FOODIE

Buttermilk Pancakes

with Golden Syrup and Cherries Pancakes are a perfect way to start your day, and they’re ideal for a sweet breakfast on a hot summery day. If unavailable add a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice for each cup of milk, and use in place of the buttermilk. The egg whites are beaten separately and are folded at the end to ensure extra fluffy pancakes. Enjoy served warm with golden syrup, butter, and cherries or any fresh fruit of your choice. By Kareem Abdelrahman

Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 1 tbsp sugar 2 large eggs, separated 2 1/2 cups buttermilk (labn rayeb) 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted 1/2 cup cherries, pitted, plus more for serving Warm golden syrup and butter, for serving

Method: 1.Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a large bowl and mix to combine. 2.In another clean bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form. In another bowl, whisk egg yolks, buttermilk, and the melted butter that has cooled slightly. Fold in egg whites till just combined. Add dry ingredients and fold till no particles of flour are visible. Make sure you don’t over mix it or you risk developing gluten in the flour, thus making the pancakes tough and not fluffy. 3.Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat and add a touch of oil. Spread the oil with a paper towel until no visible oil remains. Use 1/4 cup of batter per pancake and cook for 2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Before you flip, you could add some pitted cherries, which will make them cherry stuffed pancakes. Serve with golden syrup, butter, and more fresh cherries on top.
