In many years of practical application, the Starck 3 range has proven just how successful and timelessly modern its sleek, minimalist design really is – great sustainability by Philippe Starck and Duravit. EDITOR’S NOTE
Summer’s Last Hurrah
W
hat an exciting season it has been shaping up so far, characterized by sizzling days and seductive summer nights. But as August slips by, consider this issue the last hurrah of the summer before we need to regroup our sun-kissed selves and go back to the grind. Our London editor Daniela Bonetto rounds up the best global city vacations in “The City Break” edit. But if you are sticking around and attempting to create picture-perfect summer Instagram stories, take a cue from the top travel influencers around the globe as we “follow” them in Bonetto’s “If you like me, follow me” feature. Morocco has always been a destination for the rich and famous. It’s a country where icons such as French painters Eugene Delacroix and Henry Matisse, and designer Yves Saint Laurent called home. Decades later it continues to be a holiday hotspot for the likes of the Getty family, Beyoncé, and David Beckham. Mariah Carey even named one of her children “Moroccan” out of her admiration of the country! A place like no other we dedicate a section to the magic of Morocco. We feature its best hotels, handmade designs, and even the rise of the international models from this mesmerizing African country. For the remainder of the summer, we hope that you live by the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson and “live in the sunshine. Swim in the sea. Drink in the wild air.” Enjoy the issue, Hind El Ramly editor@flair-magazine.com

Love, Live & Light up your Life
with IKEA
For any couple preparing for the big day, the list to prepare their dream home is overwhelming. And one of the biggest obstacles couple face is the lack of space in their new home. However space can be created. It’s all about using the right colors, lighting, and smart solutions. Here are some of IKEA’s tips and tricks to help you as you create your new haven. Visual Impact When it comes to walls, light colors have the visual effect of making a room or space appear larger; while dark colors make it feel small, cozy and comforting. Strong colors on large walls; especially dark colors will reflect on floors and furniture. Who Said Light Only Comes From Within? How does lighting affect our impression of the space? What makes the lighting in a space enjoyable? Why do we choose to spend time in a particular space? A good lighting plan can help us create a different mood in every space. Light does not only help us distinguish colors, shapes and sizes, it is essential for our well being. Good lighting does not mean bright lights. There is no need for strong lighting in a bedroom as

it is a place for rest and sleep. In the living room, on the other hand, where the family members gather or host guests, lighting should be strong to reflect the vitality of the place. For a feeling of spaciousness, the distribution of light within the space plays an important role. Lighting should be positioned to provide overall high levels of illumination with an even distribution on the walls and uniform lighting on all surfaces. Outsmart Clutter & Store Smartly Smart storage saves time and space, protects us from the negative energy of clutter, and makes maintenance much easier. Storage plays such an important role in a well-functioning household that is why it is one of IKEA’s home furnishing priorities. Here are some tips for smart storage 1. Make the most of available space by using the full wall-height for shelves; and make sure it is possible to reach the top shelf with a step-stool or ladder nearby. 2. Storage with sliding doors or textile curtains is practical for closed storage in tight spaces. 3. When you plan a children’s room, make their storage at child’s height so that they can easily reach it. 4. Multifunctional products and solutions such as a stools which also serves as storage space, are very handy. 5. For convenience, have frequently used items within easy reach and less used items stored away.

@FollowMeTo 4.6m If there is one Instagram account that has taken the world by storm it’s this one. Murad and Natalia Osmann have travelled to destinations most people only dream about and it all started out of frustration. His ‘Follow Me To’ series started after Natalia got frustrated with him always taking pictures of wherever they went. She resorted to literally dragging him round by the hand on their travels. So, Murad had an idea and starting snapping pictures of his then girlfriend taking his hand and leading him through some of the world’s most iconic and recognizable landmarks. The couple (who also have their own separate accounts) are followed by 5.6 million followers so if you want a trip to Bali, Hong Kong or to the moon (one day, I’m sure) these two are your best bet.

@TheBlondeAbroad 436k Beautiful and from California, Kiersten Rich decided to think outside the office cubicle. In 2011 at the age of 22 she decided enough was enough and left her career in corporate finance to follow her dreams. She writes on her blog; “Like many people, I was taught to go to college, get a job, get married, have kids and live happily ever after. Not once did I consider that chasing the societal idea of “success” would lead me to an unfulfilling and unhappy life. After graduating with honours and getting a job at a prestigious financial firm in LA, I soon realized I was living someone else’s dream. I left my career to travel the world, volunteer in developing countries, and discover my own happily ever after”. With the few savings, she set off to Australia and New Zealand where her travel photos (and undoubtedly good looks) made her an instant success. Today she is paid to travel and give single girls out there tips on how to travel solo. #Marrakech

Small Bags, INTERVIEW
Les Miniatures
Lifetime friends turned partners Farah Yasser and Hanna Hazem have always had a passion for fashion. Together they founded “Les Miniatures” and through it transformed the trend of tiny bags and made it into their own fully-fledged brand. Just in time as they release their latest dreamy collection titled “Fleurette” we speak to the founders about their designs and their future plans for their little magnificent masterpieces.
Big Dreams Why did you decide to focus your design on small bags?
We started wearing minis when they became on the hot list and we fell in love! We followed the big designers and adored their mini pieces, we saw how celebrities and bloggers styled it and we wished we could get our hands on them. We noticed that this trend was not very accessible here in the local market, as people were too clingy to the big old bag and we did not find a lot of cool designs to buy locally. So we wanted to step foot in the market and prove how a tiny accessory can make a big difference to a person’s outfit and that bags should not only be worn as a luggage.
There has been a surge of local accessories design in Egypt. What sets your brand apart from them?
We think its amazing that nowadays you can stumble upon many local designers and buy products that could be actually better than what you can buy from abroad. Yet we think that each designer is unique in their own form, and that we all compliment one another without overlapping. As Les Miniatures, we remain true to our brand identity of creating wearable art in the form of bags, and we are proud to be the only local designer focusing solely on mini bags.

Take us through your design process‌
Our process starts when we meet up together and start brainstorming, we always have tons of ideas and inspirations in our heads. Also, being a team of two makes us stronger in terms of coming up with new designs, yet its also challenging to reach a compromise from our totally different mindsets. We believe however, that this is what makes our designs stand out and not look consistent. The challenge always lies in turning these scattered ideas into one design that could be transformed into a miniature. Therefore our bags basically speak our mind! After weeks of perfecting the design we move to the next step, which is the production process, as we work with a skilled team of artisans who deeply believe in our concepts.
How would you describe your design aesthetic?
We always focus on portraying our bags as wearable art. We don’t want people walking with our bags without feeling that they’re wearing a statement on their shoulder. We also love that people now recognize our designs, which is what we aimed for from the start.
What can we expect from you in the future?
Through our brand we aim to launch new collections every now and then that are different from the previous ones. We are currently working on very cool collaborations that will be launched soon. We are also planning to expand beyond designing bags, so you’d expect to see more mini designs in the near future.
What are the biggest challenges you face and how do you overcome them?
Our biggest challenge is finding materials to use in Egypt. This problem can lead to delaying the production process or even not being able to execute some of the designs we have planned. Also, quality control is another big challenge. Since we produce locally, we always try to be very strict with our quality control and not overlook any imperfections and we always put a lot of effort to ensure the highest quality.

Google for Fashion For any fashion fanatic or professional in the business, keeping up with the exclusive new looks and daily changing trends can be a hassle. That’s why a genius named Alexandra Van Houtte is our everyday fashion hero. Creating a Google-like site to tackle the exact issue of keeping up with the fashion world, this woman has made it her job to help those young and fresh designers have easy access to the word of catwalks and high-end fashion. Dividing the large part of the world known as fashion into its own Google site is just the thing the designers of tomorrow are looking for.
Nike x Comme des Garcons For almost two decades the brands Nike and Comme des Garcons have been finding the perfect balance of streetwear and class. During the Japanese brand’s SS18 fashion show, it was plain that the shoes the models were wearing were part of the classic collab. Coming in pink white and pink black, these sneakers are looking like they are ready to wear on the run and to the club. While no details have been released by the two brands, it is safe to say by what we’ve seen that they are sure to become the new staple.
LV & Kahawaty for UNICEF With the current Syrian refugee crisis, many are trying to help in any way they can. Louis Vuitton is no exception. Sending the wonderful and caring model Jessica Kahawaty to join UNICEF at the Za’arari camp in Jordan, we have seen the help of Louis Vuitton with these children first hand. Managing to help “preserve that innocence” of those children who have lost their normal lives to the seven-year war, UNICEF has provided around 35 liters of clean drinking water daily to the refugees and has also provided them with 24/7 medical care. They have also started programs such as the one for new mothers that help them in their delicate time and, most impressive to the model, an innovation lab, where the refugees take part in finding a solution to their own camp. Visits like these remind us of what we like to block out, but need to remember and help us have hope and want to take action. Kahawaty has most definitely done her part.
Jimmy Choo Acquired by Michael Kors Being bought for 896 million pounds, the 2000 famed strappy stilettoes brand Jimmy Choo is now in the hand of the American brand Michael Kors. Given its original value started at 545.6m pounds, it has come a long way. The chief executive Pierre Denis will still be on the team however, keeping to the essence of the classic Jimmy Choo Shoe.

Wella’s New Global Ambassador The Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner is known for her character Sansa Stark’s fiery red locks. However, the natural blonde had to dye her hair for the part, and this definitely took a toll on it. In an interview, the actress remarks that she loved the red headed look, but the dying and styling of her hair caused it to become unhealthy. That’s why becoming an Ambassador for the hair care line Wella Professionals was the perfect job for her. She was in love with the company’s line as it was what was keeping her hair healthy throughout show. She has now, however, decided to return to her blond locks, and like her other powerful co-star Emilia Clark, has opted for wearing a wig throughout the production of the show. She is a true role model in the world of hair care and looking fabulous.

FEATURE We all admire and gawk in awe at the glamour of an Elie Saab gown and the perfection of a Zuhair Murad haute couture creation. We also love and champion the works of our local fashion designers such as Norine Farah and Rafik Zaky. But how often do we think about the materials that all these great designers have used to create their magnificent pieces? Fabric is one of the most important factors in any fashion design. So when designers select their coveted pieces to create dazzling designs, the name they often flock to is Salem Alta Moda.
Salem Alta Moda
Designers’ Choice Established at the beginning of the 20th century, Salem Alta Moda specialized in fashion textile and fabrics, and quickly became known as the leader of fashion fabrics in Egypt. Starting in Port Said before relocating to Cairo, the brand has become the link between the international fashion and Egypt when it comes to fabrics. Because they carry premium-designed fabrics and stay on top of fashion trends, their creations have attracted the likes of Zuhair Murad and Elie Saab and are used in luxury Italian and French couture wear. Under the leadership of the brand’s owner Ahmed Salem, their uniqueness in the market has been deeply entrenched. They now regularly provide the fashion scene in Egypt with the finest and most premium quality of fabrics that keeps them up to date with the latest trends and seasonal colors. While other fabric stores always err on the safe side and sell what’s commercially viable, Salem Alta Moda takes risks and offers all types of fabrics and designs. What also gives them an edge is their fashion network and collaborations with the biggest designers in Egypt. Salem Alta Moda follows designers from their arrival to the fashion industry and accompanies them throughout their whole journey advising them and guiding them when it comes to fabrics. “Salem Alta Moda has become a start point for every upcoming designer because our fabrics are a sort of inspiration for them and their collections. They will learn a lot of details when it comes to fabrics and techniques. We help them put on paper their ideas and concepts by understanding and choosing the right fabrics for their designs. We try as hard as we can to make them understand the different steps they should go through to become successful designers and complete their collection…We always aim to set a foundation for emerging designers by helping them throughout the fabric selection process and offer best practice tips for some of them”, expressed Ahmed Salem about the process. Salem advices new and up and coming designers to be bold in showing their ideas because that is what will make them sand out and be recognized in the fashion scene.

Among Salem Alta Moda’s most famous local clients are designers Norine Farah and Rafik Zaky. So where do they get their inspiration from and how do they select their fabrics? Read on to find out!
NORINE FARAH
How do you describe your fashions and style?
I believe fashion is art and this is how I like to interpret my work. I do not follow all trends, I follow what I believe is beautiful and flattering. My work is ever changing as my personal style and that’s what I believe makes my work special.
How important is the fabric selection process?
Fabric selection is actually the most important part of my design process as I design based on the fabric I chose and not the other way around. The way I work is very unorthodox but honestly this is how I enjoy designing.
On what basis do you choose fabrics for your design?
I chose what speaks to me. As soon as I see a fabric I like, I instantly imagine how it would look as a dress. If I don’t feel comfortable with the fabric as soon as I see it, I simply don’t buy it and don’t look back. The color, shape, texture, and design are all important but the overall mix of these aspects is what matters at the end.
Why do you choose Salem Alta Moda fabrics for your work?
Salem Alta Moda is always on-trend and not only that, but also with the most exquisite taste. I don’t have to look anywhere else. Honestly, what I also love about Salem Alta Moda is that I feel at home when I’m there. They know exactly what I’m looking for every time. The staff is as friendly as could be and extremely helpful. I can’t imagine going anywhere else. It’s my to-go-to place for my fabrics.

RAFIK ZAKY How do you describe your fashions and style?
I always like to design distinctive pieces that reflect my own personal spirit. I have a certain spirit in my work that is known whether by the ruffles or dentelle, which make the piece rich, elegant, different and chic. I always strive to make the client feel different than anyone else while wearing my piece.
How important is the fabric selection process?
I believe that selecting the fabric is the most important aspect of my design process. In fact, most of the time I design based on the fabrics I like, and not necessarily the other way around. Fabrics are one of the main sources of my inspiration, and that’s why I can say that the fabric plays a major role in the outcome of the piece – maybe even bigger than the design itself.
On what basis do you choose fabrics for your design?
Usually, when I’m working on ready-made dresses, I try to choose fabrics that were not already used before, or weren’t used by other designers before. As for the customization, I try to use the fabric that the client likes, while keeping my spirit in the design.
Why do you choose Salem Alta Moda fabrics for your work?
I always choose Salem because they are the most renowned fabric supplier. They always have fabrics that I love. It’s true that prices have increased a little bit lately, but it’s definitely worth it because the fabrics are not to be found anywhere else in Egypt. When Ahmed Salem travels to purchase new fabrics, he always gives us the opportunity to choose the fabrics we want or need – and this is a plus for me. I think that this shows how caring he is about the designers in Egypt. Also, he has a huge variety of fabrics in everything: plain, dentelles, brocade, printed silk, etc., and this is what I like about Salem Alta Moda.

Models on the Rise By Kate Dannies
Arab models have been few and far between but things are starting to change slowly. Recently a quartet of Moroccan beauties have become regulars on the international catwalk and we think that a trend can be officially declared. These Moroccan models showcase the best of Arab elegance, grace, and the unique beauty of the Middle East.
Rania Benchegra Rania was discovered in 2011 at a Marrakech mall by an Elite Model Look scout. She went on to win the agency’s competition and her career has been on the up and up ever since, with a lead in the H&M “Forever Summer” campaign, a cameo in the Victoria’s Secret PINK campaign, and plenty of appearances in international fashion shows. She is also rapidly becoming an Instagram star and a role model for Arab girls and women in the region and around the world.
Imaan Hammam Half Moroccan and half Egyptian raised Amsterdam, Imaan Hammam was discovered by CODE management scouts in 2010 in an Amsterdam train station. She has become a fixture on the international catwalk, appearing in dozens of runway shows for all the top fashion brands from Givenchy to Tom Ford to Vera Wang. In addition to numerous luxury print campaigns, she has appeared in international editions of Vogue on various occasions, including the cover of a September issue, and is reportedly a favourite of Anna Wintour. Hammam is a proud Muslim who wants to be a role model for girls of colour.
Hind Sahli Since being signed in 2008 and leaving Morocco for New York and Paris, Hind Sahli has becoming a rising star in the modelling industry. She has appeared in runway shows for Marc Jacobs, Kenzo, Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, and many others. She has also appeared in print campaigns for Estee Lauder and in Italian Vogue. From a traditional family, Sahli has managed to merge her international modelling career with her Moroccan Muslim background and has gained strong support from family, friends, and fans at home and abroad.
Nora Attal British of Moroccan descent, Noral Attal was discovered by British designer J.W. Anderson. HOT ADDRESS
Island Living Milaidhoo
We are all familiar with the Maldives Islands and tales of its breathtaking beauty. Have you heard, however, of the small Island of Milaidhoo? Upon the tiny Maldivian Island is the understated yet undeniably sophisticated 5 star boutique resort spanning 13 acres with the design and concept rooted in Maldivian culture. Set in Baa Atoll’s beautiful UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, this spectacular, secluded 50-villa island retreat is a 35-minute seaplane flight from Maldives International Airport
and is a member of The Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Staying true to their countries roots, the hotel recently opened the only modern Maldivian restaurant in the Maldives called Ba’theli (pronounced ‘bah-telly’). It is possibly one of the few fine-dining restaurants in the world that encourages its diners to come barefoot! Ba’theli’s architecture reflects its heritage as it takes its name from the local word for a traditional
wooden sailing boat and has been built in the shape of three boats that stands on stilts over the lagoon. One ‘boat’ is the restaurant, a second ‘boat’ is the barlounge and a third ‘boat’ is the kitchen. Guests can dine either outdoors on the open-air ‘deck’ of the restaurant under a starry night sky, or inside the boat, which is air-conditioned and has glass floors for views of the marine life below. Facing the west, Ba’theli commands perfect sunset
views and is reached on foot by an overwater wooden jetty. Ba’theli is open for dinner every night and offers a six-course Maldivian heritage tasting menu. The story of Ba’theli boats began over 5,000 years ago when the Maldives became a key port of call for traders sailing from Indonesia and India to Arabia with cargoes of cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, cloves, ginger and pepper. The Maldivians bartered coconuts, sun-dried fish, cordage, cowrie shells and sails woven from coconut fibre for spice, rice, ceramics and silks. Locally-made cargo boats, called Ba’theli in the local language, sailed throughout the archipelago with these goods, spreading knowledge
about different lands, their customs and cuisine. Inspired by this heritage, the story continues on board the restaurant as the team, led by Maldivian chef Ahmed “Seabass” Sivath create dishes inspired by local dishes with flavours taken from the old maritime spice routes, blending local herbs and spices to enhance natural flavours. With such a stunning location and design, the restaurant’s food has to live up to the setting and it’s Chef Sivath’s responsibility to ensure that the food in Ba’theli is every bit as unique as its architecture. The Ba’theli menu features classic Maldivian dishes such as Garudhiya (a clear soup
with tuna), Mashuni (a tuna salad with coconut, pumpkin and lime) as well as a selection of regional specialties from around the different atolls such as a beef curry from the north and chicken curry from the far south of the Maldives. The menu isn’t limited to local ingredients, although many of the dishes originate in the Maldives, but also takes on cooking techniques and flavours from around the Indian Ocean, as does traditional Maldivian cooking. Ingredients from India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia find their way onto the menu, all giving their subtle influence to the dishes.

Homegrown Made in Morocco
It is always frustrating to be shopping for something “authentic” only to realize that the traditional Moroccan pottery you have been examining is actually made China. Enter “Made in Morocco” a groundbreaking initiative by Moroccan CEOs and manufacturing industry leaders to lay down the law when it comes to what is Made in Morocco and what is not. By Kate Dannies
Made in Morocco is a non-profit on a mission to promote truth in advertising. The initiative dates to January 2014, when a market research study revealed that foreign and Moroccan consumers wanted to buy Moroccan products, but were unable to discern which of the products they were considering were actually made in Morocco due to unclear labeling and marketing. The research also showed that consumers felt Moroccan brands should bring manufacturing back to the country and that a label making it easier to identify Moroccan products would be helpful. Made in Morocco was born. By the end of the year the team had conceptualized the label, established a membership scheme to attract Moroccan brands to the label, and started signing up companies making products in Morocco to use the label. The Made in Morocco label aims to be the definitive symbol of Moroccan-made products recognized by the government, manufacturers, and consumers alike both in Morocco and abroad. The Made in Morocco label not only helps consumers clarify what they are buying, but helps manufacturers celebrate the Moroccan-ness of their products and use that credential to boost their profile locally and internationally. A worthy project especially in uncertain economic times as countries in the region seek new strategies to boost local manufacturing and highlight the authenticity and cultural appeal of products made locally. We love the idea and would like to see it spread around the region. As ardent shoppers—especially while travelling—it is helpful to know that when we are purchasing local specialties they are actually made in the country and that we are supporting local industry and artisans. Take us to the souk!

The museum, housed in a renovated funduq, features a collection of 4,500 photographs of Morocco dating between the 1870s and the 1950s. This is a perfect way to catch a glimpse of some of Morocco’s most important sites and cultural themes all in one place.
Relax: Café Arabe A favourite of in the know travellers, expats and Marrakech tastemakers, Café Arabe is the perfect place for an afternoon tea or pre-dinner drinks. We love the modern Moroccan interiors and menu combining European and Moroccan flavours. The people watching is unmatched as is the view from the rooftop terrace, which overlooks Marrakech’s old city. But our favourite part of Café Arabe is that it is really the perfect choice for any time of day or any situation; whether romantic sunset drinks, a midday stop for refreshment, or a casual dinner with friends, Café Arabe fits the bill.
Party: Azar We love the sophisticated ambiance of Azar, a bar, restaurant, terrace, and club in Marrakech’s new town. A night out at Azar is the perfect expression of Moroccan sophistication and style. Whatever your taste—shisha under the stars or dancing the night away to oriental live music and the beats of international DJs—Azar provides just the right setting. We love the dark and moody interiors and the sense of possibility and fun that Azar embodies.
Rejuvenate: Les Bains de Marrakech Any good visit to Marrakech must involve a relaxing afternoon at a Moroccan-style spa, in our opinion. Les Bains de Marrakech, tucked into a back corner of the old city, fits the bill when it comes to a luxury take on the traditional Moroccan hammam ritual. The spa is plushy decorated in an opulent oriental style with soothing low lights and a warming colour palette. Everything in this retreat appeals to the senses—from the look and feel of the space to the aromatherapy and unmatched selection of spa treatments. When in Marrakech, treat yourself.

BOUTIQUE HOTEL
Golden Standard
Mรถvenpick Mansour Eddahbi
Visitors of the captivating Red City of Marrakech are spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodations. The city is filled with lovely “riad-style” hotels and mutli-chain ones. So when the Mövenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi decided to reopen its doors after an impressive six-year renovation in Marrakech, it tapped studio MHNA to design the hotel and lead the renovation. Founded by Marc Hertrich & Nicolas Adnet, the Paris studio has been operating for over 20 years and have worked on numerous projects around the world including homes, hotels, spas, and restaurants. Just a few minutes away from the bustling Medina in the central L’Hivernage district, the 5-star hotel features 503 rooms, six restaurants and bars, Ô de Rose spa and wellbeing centre, three swimming pools and a kids club. The city centre hotel takes its inspiration from, Ahmed Al Mansour Eddahbi, Sultan of the Saadian dynasty, who propelled Marrakech to new cultural heights. This stylish oasis offers an ode to the wealth and beauty of these desert rarities by honoring the cultural heritage, decorative arts and magic of the everfascinating country that is Morocco.
Upon passing the gated promenade, you can admire the interplay of light and shadow, where some 700 candles illuminate the way before arriving at the entrance of the resort. You can then take in the soothing bronze colors decorating the lobby and further explore the majestic halls surrounding the extravagant and brightly colored heart of the resort. This backdrop is what houses the ultimate treasure of any oasis: its water source. From the main building, you can discover the lush gardens, which were completely redesigned by the landscape gardener Madison Cox and Studio MHNA. The garden’s palm trees, citrus trees, olive trees and pepper plants offer an array of relaxing spaces where you can completely unwind. You can also cool off by the refreshing fountains and the resort’s four different pools. The alleys of the garden lead to two different restaurants: SARAY, which serves a buffet style of international cuisine and authentic Moroccan dishes was inspired by the culture of the wandering tribes, the décor emulates caidal tents in a courtyard filled with palms and olive trees. JAMRA, a bar & grill restaurant, overlooking the lower pool offers its guests an exquisite blend of grills and refreshing drinks in a contemporary and colorful setting. The design of the rooms and suites was inspired by “caravanserais,” with soft muted colors that are enhanced with pops of bright colors. A mix of contemporary and traditional style, Studio MHNA creates a calming ambiance that invites total relaxation. The apex of these suites is the 290 square-meter penthouse with a private pool. www.studiomhna.com

EXHIBITIONIST
Takashi Murakami
The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg By Nour Ibrahim

Takashi Murakami is a modern-day pioneer in the art world and considered the founder of the animated style of contemporary art called “Superflat”. Being the ultra-talented artist that he is, Murakami has had an evolution of artistic styles throughout the years, despite their animated similarity. While ‘The Octopus Eats His Own Leg’ exhibit shows a wave of his most modern art, traces of his past masterpieces seem to resonate through them, as the artist has made it a habit to gain inspiration from his own work. The most recurring and evolving character throughout his works is the jagged mothed mouse creature called Mr. DOB which is supposedly the artist’s alter-ego. Shown in a variety of views, Murakami lives through his art with his envisioned character. It is evident that it is a main focus of his, as DOB appears in numerous pieces in Murakami’s latest exhibition.
However, the artist did not begin with his eerie alter ego. His original artwork was less commercial and more on the classical contemporary side. Before partnering with the likes of Kanye West on album covers, he was painting satirical or even ironic interpretations of post-World War II events, such as the nuclear bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. While he did move on from this form of dark imagery, his paintings still remained on the unnerving side as he combined dark themes with colourful and cartoonish imagery that conjures a contrast that would both confuse and satisfy the viewer.

His most recent 114-foot work of art “The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg” for which the exhibition is titled takes us back to these roots, however there are other modern pieces present in the exhibition, such as a new collaborative painting with the infamous Kanye West. But the star of the show was gained from the likes of myths, legends, and facts. Deeply affected by the events of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that killed 15,000 people, Murakami began on art pieces that symbolized the power of healing and rebirth. Retrieving mythical elements such as the legendary band of Buddhist monks called Arhats that symbolized care and healing, and factual symbolism of the octopus, that would eat his own injured leg off to survive, knowing it would grow back, Murakami created an artistic world that represented both sorrow and rejuvenation, all the while keeping to his symbolic “Superflat” style.

A true pioneer and a wonderful artist, Takashi Murakami is most definitely a mastermind in the world of contemporary art. Being shown to the public in the MCA gallery in Los Angles and Later in Vancouver, The Octopus Eats His Own Leg is a definite must see for any artistic fanatic that is looking for something fresh, eerie, inspiring, and truly the work of genius.
