FASHION Holiday How-To: Your Guide To Looking Your Best This Holiday Season

Winter 2013 Trend Report: Leather, Bulky Sweaters, Fur , and More!

A Twist on a Tee: T-shirts are no longer just for a lazy day. Editors show you how to dress up a tee for any occasion.

Holiday How-To: Your Guide To Looking Sharp This Holiday Season by Samantha Timmerman

The Statement Dress This dress is all about the WOW factor. Stick to a dark, solid color (you can never go wrong with black!) so that you avoid clashing with the décor and look for detailing, a unique shape, or even sleeves to keep it interesting. Cute but Comfortable Heels There’s nothing that can ruin your evening faster than sore feet. So pick up a pair of low-key heels that won’t steal the thunder from your dress and go ahead and make the rounds at that party while everyone else fights for a seat on the couch!

A Bright Lip Since the rest of your ensemble is dark and monotone, go all out with your lip color! Pick a vibrant red or pink to draw attention to your lips and keep things exciting under the mistletoe. Loose Natural Waves When it comes to your hair, it’s best to keep things natural and elegant. You don’t want to upstage your dress, and you obviously want to show off those beautiful locks, so just add some subtle waves or curls and prepare for the compliments to pour in!

TREND REPORT: WINTER 2013 by Caitlin Beck and Suzette A. Dorrielan

It seems like every season you need to revamp your closet! No fear! We’re here to help. Here is a look at the upcoming trends for Winter 2013. This fall has been all about DARK COLORS, especially maroon. We will continue to see this trend throughout the winter, so stock up! OVERSIZED COATS are making it big this winter, especially those that have patterned prints (a trend we saw in the fall) or fur. These coats are cute, providing us with cool silhouettes, as well as, warmth. And who doesn’t like to be warm in the winter? CHUNKY SWEATERS will be making its way into many fashionistas’ closets. They’re warm, they’re fun, and they’re perfect for a casual Friday night out. LEATHER! This is the biggest trend that is expected to take off in the next up-coming months. We saw it during fashion week and it is finally making its way to mainstream fashion. Especially in pants and shorts and pairing them with patterned tights…Very cute! EMERALD is the color of the winter season. The color has been seen on the red carpet and the runway. With Pantone officially announcing it 2013’s Color of the Year, it is the season’s must have, whether it’s a gown or some fierce eyeshadow.

COBALT BLUE is also coming back into fashion. We saw it make a brief appearance back in 2010, but 2013 seems much more promising. From hats to patterned dresses to even eyeliner, everything is going to be available in this bright and flattering color. BOLD LIPS are also a big trend, particularly bright reds and deep plums. These lips paired with neutral makeup and understated hair will easily give you the chic runway look. Another trend that could be a huge hit if worn the right way is the “DANDY” STYLE. This has come from overseas and is anything that has a slightly masculine style. We are seeing coats that are slightly longer and have a bit less shape to them. This is a very put together look, extremely classy, and will be great for the cold months. The last really big look that will be hitting the streets soon is called “EXPRESSION”. These colors could be anything from pastels to pops of color. The main goal is to pair colors that are not expected to go together yet somehow work, such as violet blue and yellow. Pastels in the winter is something that has not been seen in awhile, so this is a very exciting trend!

These Tees Rock! We’ve all had those days where the only thing you want to wear was a t-shirt. And why not? It’s a staple and it’s comfy. But it doesn’t have to be just that. We highlight two of the coolest t-shirt companies whose tees can be dressed up or down to take you from class to a night out.

Directed by: Suzette A. Dorrielan, Photographed by: Ava Gagliardi, Edited by : Suzette A. Dorrielan and Ava Gagliardi, with Models (in order of appearance): Stacey Vargas, Mika Kiyono, and Will Speros

Here, our Markets Editor wears the Pride and Prejudice fleece paired with a flirty skirt and pumps, elevating this look for the perfect night out on the town.

Out of Print Clothing Out of Print Clothing is a neat little company based in Brooklyn who specializes in making tshirts and sweatshirts with the first edition cover of literary classics. The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice, The Clockwork Orange, and Catch22 are just a few book covers that have been featured on their shirts. They also offer literarythemed accessories and stationary.

The Great Gatsby sweatshirt is perfect for going to class, an internship, or a laid back night out. Paired with a skirt and cool shoes, and you have a comfy, but stylish outfit that can take you anywhere.

Blondes Make T-Shirts Better We’re not sure if blondes actually do make t-shirts better, but these ecofriendly shirts are definitely better than your regular old tee. These shirts have photos and graphics of the perfect blonde moments. Forgetting to take the nozzle out of your car before driving away, burning your favorite shirt with an iron, an accidental lipstick stain on collar. Who hasn’t been? Now revel in these moments by wearing them on these quirkily designed t-shirts.

Blondes Make T-Shirts Better tees are a bit more casual and are great for those days when you’ve woken up at 8:24 for your 8:30 class. Just throw this on and no one will be the wiser to the fact that you managed to brush your hair and wash your face in three minutes.

Holiday Gift Guide for the Girls in Your Life

A Look at 2012’s Best Beauty Products

Beauty On A Dime: Facials by Caitlin Beck

Beauty doesn’t always have to be expensive. Case and point: an inexpensive way of getting a facial. Yes, getting a professional facial is awesome! Who wouldn’t love that? But hello? On my college budget the word “professional” is something that I am striving for and have not yet managed. So, I prefer to do things at home, whenever possible. Whether you are home or in your college dorm, that doesn’t mean that you can’t manage to have great results from DIY beauty projects. Before you do any facials, remember to always exfoliate your face first! There is no point in continuing if you don’t do this step. Also, let your shower run for a while to allow the steam to open

your pores up. Doing this prior tends to lead to better results.

For those of you with dry skin, your new best friend is Avocado. In a bowl mix Powdered milk and about half an avocado water: that is all that’s with roughly one tableneeded. A Run Down of 2012’s 12 Best Beauty Products

by Caitlin Beck

Now that 2012 is coming to a close, we here in the Beauty section thought that it would be a good idea to take a look back at the 12 best beauty products of the year!

12

Naked 2 Palette by Urban Decay. The same size as the original the Naked 2 has colors that are meant for paler tones of skin. With glittery shadows, a great brush and a free lipgloss everyone needs to go out and get one. The Naked 2 is available at Sephora for $50.

11

Clarins UV Plus Day Screen High Protection SPF 40. This product is absolutely amazing, and not expensive at all! For only $30, this product will feeling noticeably softer, but it will protect you from the Sun...And pollution! Which makes it such a great gift for anyone living in the city!

10

John Frieda Precision Foam Hair Colour. What’s really great about this product is that it is foam, which means that your color is guaranteed to be even! There are also 20 shades available, so there is a color for everyone!

8

Sally Hansen VitaSurge Growth Gel. For those of you like me, our nails could use a little work! This gel is 6$, that is all it includes vitamins that will help your nails grow long and strong.

9

Olay Facial Hair Removal. Kind of an embarrassing topic but if you have dark or unwanted facial hair, this product is perfect for you! It promises not to irritate the skin and it is only $25. What a steal!

7

Romi Digital Foundation. So this one is a little pricey at $80, but it is also really cool. Let me explain if you haven’t heard about this yet. This is a tool that automatically dispenses an all-in-one primer, which means foundation, concealer, and powder to your skin. You choose from three different shades and each kit will last you for two months. I highly recommend this product!

6

Nuface Trinity Toning Device. This is super expensive at $325 but I have used it myself and it is probably the best thing in the world, and would be higher on the list, if not for its high price. So this device is used for five minutes at a time. It helps to tighten your skin and works to prevent and smooth out wrinkles. My favorite part about this device is that it is so easy to use! It will beep when it is done with the area that it is placed on. Really really cool and easy!

5

Frizz-Ease Solution 10$. Literally everyone needs this product sometimes, and it is cheap and the best part, is that it actually works! My favorite part about this product is that it is light weight and it has smoothing lotion leaving your hair looking great even on the rainiest of days.

3

This year has been all about lash enhancers. This year my favorite is Mary Kay Lash Primer, at $15. Not only is the container very sleek but it applies smooth. There is nothing worse than having mascara clumps, but with this product, there isn’t a chance of that happening.

1

4

Marc Anthony Easy Lites Instant Highlighting Spray. At only $9, I was so mad when I heard about this product, because I have been going to the salon for years to get my hair professionally highlighted. Well, now I don’t have to, because you simply spray on this on, run over it with a flat iron, and there you go. You now have highlights!

2

Crest 3D White Intensive Professional Effects White-Strips $45. Yes, whitening strips have been around for years, but these are different. In previous years, I always found that my teeth were really sensitive after using whitening strips but with these I can eat right afterwards and be totally fine. It is also great, because there are products that help you to continue to whiten even after the initial strips. There is a whole line of Crest products including a mouth wash and a toothpaste that all work really great to keep your teeth looking their best!

DRUM ROLL PLEASE: At-Home Gel Manicures. There was not a bigger trend this year than gel and design art on nails. Nutra Nail Gel Perfect, at $12, is just one of the great brands that allows you to keep your nails looking perfect for weeks at a time. This gel dries within five minutes and there is no UV light necessary!

H&M and Margiela Team Up H&M isn’t new to teaming up with luxury brands, working with Versace just last year. But this collaboration with Maison Martin Margiela shows a push by H&M to cater to a more upscale audience. While we’re not sure if H&M is going to achieve that goal, fashionistas around the world made it their mission to be at an H&M store at 8 AM to get their piece of Margiela. For those who had the option of shopping online, their bravery was rewarded by the site not crashing, as it did with both Versace releases.

7

Yves Saint Laurent Changes Its Name In June, Hedi Slimane changed the name of Yves Saint Laurent to simply Saint Laurent in a bold move indicating a new direction. With the former name being so intertwined with the luxury brand’s image and even French culture (YSL is just as iconic as Chanel’s double C), many were confused as to why? Not only is it expensive to rebrand, the company risks losing old customers. The Guardian referred to it as Slimane, flexing muscle. But it’s also indicative of Slimane’s confidence in his vision for the brand. In either case, it’s going to take a long while before anyone gets used to NOT saying those three lovely letters: Y. S. L.

Betsey Johnson Files Chapter 11 In April, Betsey Johnson LLC filed Chapter 11. Consequently, a mojority of the stores will close and many employees will laid be off. This came as a surprise to many, especially fans.

Louis Vuitton Opens Biggest Chinese Flagship in Shanghai This summer Louis Vuitton opened its biggest Chinese flagship store in Shanghai. With China being the third largest luxury goods market, this can only be more profitable for LVMH, Louis Vuitton’s parent company.

Louboutin Loses Suit Against YSL...Sort Of The biggest legal case, at least in the fashion industry, finally came to an official end in October. The case started back in April of 2011, when Christian Louboutin sued YSL for using Louboutin’s trademarked (since 2008 in New York) red sole on their shoe. In September, the courts ruled that YSL was allowed to use the red sole since the shoe in question was all red. However, Louboutin’s red sole trademark still stands with constrasting shoes (shoes whose tops are not red).

Nicolas Ghesquière’s Resignation from Balenciaga Ghesquière’s resignation in early November left many in shock, mostly because no one expected it after 15 long years at the fashion house. Some speculate it’s because he wants to start his very own fashion house, similar to when Tom Ford left Gucci Group in 2004. With so much unknown in this case, it easily would have been the biggest story of the year if Balenciaga hadn’t announced...

2

Alexander Wang To Take Over Balenciaga Announced just a couple weeks ago, the news that Alexander Wang will be Balenciaga’s new creative director took the fashion world by storm. Everyone has an opinion about it--while some think Wang will bring Balenciaga down from its high fashion perch to the downtown look he’s known for, others believe he may surprise the world in this new position. Only time will tell, with all eyes on Fashion Week Fall 2013.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT A Music Issue The Ultimate Study Playlist to Get You Through the Roughest Exam Week The Best, Most Underrated Album Releases of 2012 Are A$AP Rocky and Kendrick Lamar the saviors of Hip Hop?

Artwork by Suzette A. Dorrielan

Hip Hop’s Great New Hope

A$AP Rocky and Kendrick Lamar: Giving Us A Reason to Believe in Hip Hop Again by Suzette A. Dorrielan Back in 2010, when Drake first debuted as a rapper, he was perceived as what was missing in hip hop. With “Best I Ever Had” blowing hip hop radio stations and Top 40 playlists alike, and his mixtape gaining serious attention by prominent artists and producers, he was touted as hip hop’s savior: the next big rapper, who would have a talent and appreciation for great rhymes as well as a deeper understanding of hip hop as an art and culture. However the video to “Best I Ever Had” should have tipped us off that that wouldn’t be the case. The video showcased girls with big boobs in skimpy basketball attire, predominantly doing stretches. While many dismissed it and began to add Drake to their top ten list of best rappers, without his first album even being released, others took a step back to evaluate with an “I’ll wait til the album drops” mentality. And when it finally did (after months of delays) the hip hop community gave a collective, “Meh.” Ed Lover of radio station Power 105.1 said it best, describing the album as merely “ight.” It wasn’t spectacularly great. To be quite honest, it was barely good. It was just alright. And to Drake’s credit, what did we all expect? The second coming of Tupac? Had there not been so many expectations for “Thank Me Later” to be one of the greatest albums in hip hop, quite possibly we’d have a different interpretation of it. However, it won’t change the fact that Drake has stopped being hip hip’s savior. He not even hip hop’s prophet. In a day and age when hip hop fans need to be inspired to continue to listen to hip hop, if not Drake (or Kanye West or Kid Cudi or Nicki Minaj) than who? Enter A$AP Rocky and Kendrick Lamar. At the same time Drake was preparing to reintroduce himself to the world as a rapper (and not the kid in the wheelchair on Degrassi), two other rappers’ careers were gaining traction: A$AP Rocky from New York and Kendrick Lamar from California. (I feel it is important to keep in mind these two’s locales as it shows the evolution of both the hip hop capitals from the Biggie and Tupac days to now). However, it wasn’t until 2011 until both these rappers being started to get attention. Not by radio stations (who for hip hop remains the music authority) however, but by underground rap lovers, predominantly white suburban kids. In fact, my roommate from Boston is the one who introduced me to A$AP Rocky. Through these young adults, made up of mostly of college students, A$AP and Kendrick solidified themselves in the indie community of rappers. Among this community includes rappers like Childish Gambino, Schoolboy Q, and Tyler the Creator, who knowingly or not, have created a movement of young hip hop fans, tired of mainstream hip hop and what radio deems to be good music, and are now turning

to other more esoteric sources for the music, like Soundcloud and Myspace. But for A$AP Rocky and Kendrick Lamar, their fame benefited more from word of mouth and YouTube. Even having the help of some more indie publications like Interview Magazine and Pitchfork.com write about them. They are the millennium generation’s prolific rappers. They are our Notorious B.I.G and Tupac…Or least they could be. A$AP and Kendrick have two very different styles indicative of where they come from. Kendrick’s music is filled Southern Cali vibes reminiscent of Dr. Dre days (it definitely helps to have the man produce your most popular song and the only one that got air play on the radio, hint hint: The Recipe). Kendrick’s songs are filled with stories that have messages of a better outlook on life, particularly for women. For this reason Kendrick resonated with me, he doesn’t objectify females, he reinforced their strength (very reminiscent of Tupac’s “Keep Your Head Up”). A$AP is different. Whereas, Kendrick’s music is more conscious, A$AP is more…Cocky. But it’s a cockiness that comes from knowing he’s the sh*t. And in every song – and even how he dresses very much melding high fashion into hip hop culture – he makes it known that he in fact is the sh*t. The great part about his music, is that it is makes you feel the same. How can you hear “Goldie” and not want to cruise around in your car like it’s a Ford Mustang GT (even though it’s a Nissan Sentra)? With lyrics like, “They say money makes a n*gga act n*gga rich/ But at least a n*gga n*gga rich,” why not? That’s what’s poignant about A$AP’s and Kendrick’s music. It makes you happy to be young, to know the world is at your fingertips. And seeing them achieve so much, it makes you actually believe that to be true. These artists stand out because they are evocative of a time where hip hop was just hip hop. Not filled with the consumption of making money, getting girls, and living a ballin’ life. But when hip hop, had a message, a concept of art, or was just fun. When you could feel the artist’s passion by just hearing the beat drop. That’s a hip hop I remember when I was six listening to my older brothers’ CD’s. That kind of hip hop had been dead for a while now, at least on the mainstream front. But Kendrick and A$AP provides us that hope it is alive and well, just in a different fashion. And with them taking off and it gives other rappers with indie audiences, like Kitty Pryde, Angel Haze or Riff Raff, hope that not only can they make in hip hop, but that their brand of hip hop is one with mass appeal. A brand of hip hop that likes high fashion and taking Euro trips, a brand of hip hop that is accepting of the weirdos, the nerds, and the skater kids. This brand of hip hop is the evolution hip hop.

BEST ALBUMS OF THE YEAR: The Best Underrated Releases of 2012 by Suzette A. Dorrielan

Shields by Grizzly Bear Shields is easily the best album of 2012. It was released relatively quietly in September compared to bigger releases by G.O.O.D Music and the xx. However, it far surpassed those albums (and others) in cohesiveness and unity, creativity, and by just being great. There isn’t any track you’d want to skip, though there are a couple of stand outs like “Yet Again” and “A Simple Answer”. I recommend listening to this album on a long trip or on a quiet night, because you will not want to be interrupted. And by the end of it, you might want to be alone to fully take in what you’ve just experienced. Yeah, it’s that serious.

Candy Bar Creep Show by MS MR Even as an EP it’s a bit on the short side. But each song is pure gold. MS MR, a duo from New York, may be the next big thing, maybe even reaching Sleigh Bells territory. The four track EP is filled with ominous tones and dark vocals that give you an idea of where they came up with the name Candy Bar Creep Show. “Hurricane” probably emphasizes this the most. Lizzy Plapinger’s (lead singer) feminine voice singing the words, “Welcome to the inner workings of my mind/So dark and foul, I can’t disguise, can’t disguise” can only give one chills before applauding her performance. I would listen their Yours Truly Session Live for this song...Goosebumps guaranteed!

True by Solange At last, Solange has found her voice, and what does she have to show for it, one of the best releases of the year. After two previous releases, Solange has given us an EP that has shown us her growth and creativity as an artist. At her side is Chris Taylor (of Grizzly Bear), whose label Solange is signed to, and songwriter, Devonté Hynes. This collaboration has spurned one of the most powerful albums, filled with sombre songs about getting over a love. Here Solange navigates these emotions with lyrics that will make you cry, but 80’s beats that will make you dance (giving us the perfect embodiment of the ambivalence that comes with troubled romance). This EP has definitely solidified Solange as an artist to look for in 2013.

The Origin of Love by MIKA MIKA’s latest release is the ultimate feel good album. You can’t listen to a track without putting a smile, particularly “Popular Song” which gives every aspiring, irrevelent “loser” the message that your time will come (and all popular chicks, beware!). MIKA in The Origin of Love almost mocks the notion of love, with songs like “Love You When I’m Drunk” and “Lola”. In “Lola”, he declares “Lola, I’ve up my mind/I’m not gonna fall in love this time,” which reminds us all of those times where we’ve spent weeks being in denial about a crush. But really he’s mocking the idea of trying to deny one’s feelings, promoting, instead, embracing them, and all the crazy that come with it. Overall, this is an album that is fun and will make you want to get up and dance. In fact, he commands you to in one of his track. So give it a listen, and “Dance, dance, dance!”

Reservation by Angel Haze Angel Haze being a female rapper is a breathe of fresh air for an industry dominated by men. What’s great about her is that she doesn’t attempt to be hard or like the guys, even having a track that talks about a kind of schoolgirl love (“Gypsy Letters”), but she kind of just is (hard that is). She has a toughness about her, but she doesn’t try to eliminate her femininity. She’s a woman. She’s a rapper. And yes, she’ll probably rip you in a rap battle. But that doesn’t have to stop you from asking her out on a date afterwards...That is unless you’re intimidated by strong women.
