Such was the case with my daughter, Sarah. By the time late spring of 2021 approached it had been 18 months since we had enjoyed a visit, face to face. A west coast wedding provided the perfect scenario for an adventure together. And so the planning began. Sadie, a young yellow lab, took center stage as we planned our trip. Sarah brought the little cutie home late winter. ¶ Sarah had concerns for Sadie’s comfort as we traveled since she was afraid of the car and riding made her car sick. But she had dreams of traveling with her companion through their years together, so we hoped for the best. ¶ Our trip would begin in Marin County, California with the first leg of our two-week adventure ending just outside Seattle, Washington to witness the marriage of Forest Baker and his fiancée, Jeanette. From Seattle, the second leg of our journey was planned to highout our days so that drive time would not be too long, giving us time to enjoy the sights, stretch our legs along the way, and schedule play time for Sadie at day’s end.

I planned to fly into San Fran on Sunday the 6th after a weekend of meetings in Dallas/Ft. Worth. Monday would be a day of rest for me and preparation for our trip: Packing for Sadie and Sarah and picking up a rental SUV the day was planned to be a short drive so that we were not rushed to leave early morning and still be able to enjoy a scenic drive along Highway 1, destination Emerald Forest Cabins.
Another short drive to a beautiful beach and beach motel, the Best Western Inn at Face Rock, a dog-friendly facility.
A longer day on the road would take us just south of the Washington border. We booked another hotel on the ocean, Tolovana Inn. The trip into Seattle would involve a stop at the airport to pick up Brittany who was scheduled to travel from Indy to Seattle for the weekend event. Our stop that evening was a quaint Air B&B farm house in Snohomish, WA.
Wedding day and a day of rest from travel!
A mid-morning leave time made for an arrival shortly before dinner for a stay at Roosevelt Inn & Spa.
Sarah’s birthday! Morning to be spent enjoying the lake, then driving north to Ponderay Lake followed by a scenic drive south to our destination, River Front Motel.
A long day of driving but the destination would be worth it, Elk County Inn.
The trip to Brownsburg, Indiana would begin here where Sarah and Sadie would spend a few weeks enjoying the farm.

San Francisco I arrived at the San Francisco airport around 6 p.m. on Sunday. Sarah picked me up and we drove to Larkspur. I was looking forward to meeting Sadie, and it is safe to say that for me, it was love at first sight. And of course I enjoyed reuniting with my lovely daughter.

Monday’s breakfast was followed with a walk with Sadie. We spent some time at a dog park where she chased a Frisbee over and over and over again—the little pup had lots of energy! On the way back to the Larkspur apartment we stopped to pick up sandwiches and salads to go. After lunch it was time to pick up the rental car we would be traveling in, a mid-sized SUV. Dinner was leftovers from lunch. We made it an early night to be ready for our day of departure.

On Tuesday, the Larkspur apartment was made ready for closure. Plants were gathered for ease of watering, which Sarah’s landlords agreed to do while she was away. Sarah prepared a soft cooler travel bag stocked with snacks and water, and a couple of wine carriers holding our adult beverages (for consumption at the end of the day’s travel). With the car packed, we were ready to go around 11 a.m. I was in the driver’s seat while Sarah and Sadie snuggled in back. We set out making our way to the Panoramic Highway. First stop Stinson Beach for lunch. The forty minute drive took longer than planned as we made several stops for a sick puppy (the natural meds for travel anxiety and nausea that we picked for her up on Monday, were, unfortunately, not as helpful as hoped). Over lunch, the decision was made to discontinue our trip along Highway 1, the slow, curvy but scenic drive, in hopes that Sadie would travel better. So from Stinson Beach we headed back east to Highway 101. We arrived at the highway entrance about three hours into our trip, only to

Today was a better travel day for Sadie! The three of us enjoyed lunch, alfresco, at a small diner along highway 101. Sadie enjoyed the ocean view, and she had her first encounter some horses on the beach too! We arrived in at the Best Western Inn at Face Rock around check-in time. The hotel was extremely dog friendly. First order of business, unpack the car and load up the refrigerator/freezer with our refrigerated items. Sadie happily enjoyed a bowl of food, and we enjoyed an adult beverage.
Unfortunately, Sarah was awakened abruptly during the night by a very sick puppy. We guessed that she was made ill by something she tried to eat on the beach (Sarah was always fishing something out of her mouth). We were both very thankful for the room’s wood flooring that made clean-up much easier, no stains left behind. We decided to Our walk bring in thewas travel spectacular! crate to keep Sadie confined for the rest of the night. Thankfully, there were no more incidents. Today’s drive was not as successful for Sadie. She was car sick once again. By this time, Sarah and Sadie were front seat riders, Sadie sitting on Sarah’s lap. She was much happier with this arrangement and we hoped it would help her tummy. It was another beautiful drive along the Oregon coastline. By the time we arrived at the inn, it was cloudy, cool, and threatening rain. Unpacking the car here took a bit more energy as the second story room required several trips with luggage up an elevator (Sarah and Sadie preferred the stairs). The unique attraction to this destination was the number of rather friendly bunnies that lived on property, another first for Sadie that made walking the grounds a little more challenging. We had a short walk on the beach and picked up a light dinner from the restaurant on site before our end-of-evening routine and bed. Our next stop: Snohomish, Washington where we would enjoy a short, two-night respite.

We loaded up the car in the rain, and spent most of the day driving in weather that was true to form for the coast of Washington. We stopped at a quaint coffee drive thru for our morning brews. Of course, Sadie was a hit with the gal who served us. By the time we merged on to Interstate 5 heading north visibility made the drive challenging and accidents and road construction delayed our travel more than once, a problem since we were to pick up Brittany from the international airport. Brittany’s travel story from Indy to Seattle was littered with challenges. To add insult to injury, we were going to be two hours late picking her up. On the bright side, that gave her the time to get something to eat—a pleasure that had evaded her all day due to her travel woes. Once we retrieved Britt, we headed toward the countryside just east of Seattle, arriving at the Snohomish farm house early evening. Two bedrooms were located on the second story. Sarah, Britt, and Sadie shared a room and I took the other. A little travel weary, we all were glad to settle in for our two-night stay. Sadly, (not really ready to hit the road) we were scheduled to check out of the farm house by 11 a.m. Britt was picked up by an Uber and taken to the Seattle International airport a bit earlier. We packed up the SUV and headed south, then east on I 90 to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. As we entered the state of Idaho, the scenery changed significantly. Drought conditions left us missing the green we had enjoyed over the past few days. Our destination for the day was the Roosevelt Inn and Spa, a stone’s throw from beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene. The bed and breakfast was fully fenced, a plus for Sadie. However, we were greeted by the inn’s canine hosts who were eager to play, while we were eager for check in and a restroom break. Our human hosts were very cordial and wanted to make us feel at home, bringing us all treats, discussing the amenities of the inn, and dinner options. Finally unpacked and much more comfortable, we ventured down to the lawn area with Frisbee in hand to have a bit of play time. Gandalf, one of the host dogs, was happy to capture the Frisbee and lead Sadie on a wild game of chase. Cindy and Dave had planned a short vacation after the wedding. Their day one led them to Coeur D’Alene as well. They joined us for a cocktail at the Inn before we headed to dinner on the lake. After an enjoyable dinner and Sarah’s final walk with Sadie, we turned in for the night, looking forward to a walk to the park along the lake the next morning before heading out again.

Sarah’s birthday! We wanted to make this a short drive day. The morning was spent walking the park along the lake before check out time. Then, all packed up, we headed north to Lake Pend Oreille. The drive up was not particularly interesting, but Sandpoint, the quaint town at the tip of the lake made for a nice spot to lunch. This was Sadie’s second alfresco dining experience on our trip, one with several other canine friends who were also joining their families. It took a bit of time, but Sadie settled down so that we could enjoy the town and some great sandwiches. Along the way, Sadie’s vest had torn a bit, and conveniently there was a pet store across from the restaurant where we lunched. So Sarah made a purchase. Sadie would finish out our trip in style in her new leather harness. After lunch we enjoyed a scenic drive along the east side of the lake to our evening destination, the River Front Motel in Thompson Falls, Montana. The motel did not have a restaurant on site, so Sarah’s birthday dinner was a smorgasbord of leftovers we had collected along the way. Thankfully, our dinner at Coeur d’Alene the night before and the day’s delightful lunch made up a little bit for the slight.

The plan was to pack up and drive to Peoria, Illinois today leaving a short drive home along I 74 on Saturday. However, we were energized by the thought of the farm and comfortable (and clean) beds. We were being called to Brownsburg. So we decided to push forward for our longest day on the road yet.
