Sultans of String: Walking Through the Fire
Indigenous Collaborations featuring Sultans of String & Friends
Thursday, September 28 // 8PM

WORLD
STAGE
Flato Markham Theatre vibrates with the beautiful sounds of the World Premiere of Walking Through the Fire, a collaborative project between Sultans of String and Indigenous artists, Alyssa Delbaere-Sawchuk, Conlin Delbaere-Sawchuk, Don Ross, Dr. Duke Redbird, Leela Gilday, Leanne Taneton, Marc Meriläinen (Nadjiwan), Shannon Thunderbird, The North Sound, and a multimedia extravaganza including Northern Cree, Kendra Tagoona, Tracy Sarazin and more.
This live show is a powerful collaboration between the roots group and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit artists from across Turtle Island, leading up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. A central theme running through Walking Through the Fire is the need for the truth of Indigenous experience to be told before reconciliation can begin in earnest. Embedded in the title of the show is the energy of rebirth: fire destroys, but it also nourishes the soil to create new growth, beauty, and resiliency. Walking Through the Fire ensures that we emerge on the other side together, stronger and more unified.

This band did not disappoint, offering modern Indigenous music in both English and their ancestral languages, blending their voices to create beautiful harmonies.

An aural richness... sweeping harmonies... tremendously engaging.
Daily Pop News
Indie rock, synth rock, and folk pop are just a few of the labels critics have assigned to the music of Twin Flames. Building bridges across cultures, continents, and styles, their unique sound makes it difficult to narrow their work to a single genre. From the beginning, this husband-and-wife duo has chosen to let their music speak for itself. Jaaji (Inuk from Nunavik and Mohawk from Kahnawake) and Chelsey June (Algonquin, Métis, Cree, and Settler) write songs delivered through a mix of English, French and Inuttitut. A revered powerhouse couple well on their way to becoming a Canadian household name, the sky seems to be no limit for this pair.
Twin Flames and Friends brings together some of Canada’s most genuine treasures. Through this vibrant and engaging show, Twin Flames will present audiences with their favourite Indigenous artists, Nina Segalowitz and Marie-Celine Charron Einish. Playing some of their iconic songs, they will use a universal approach to bring in children and adults of all ages to explore the true History of Canada with their friends.

14 GREAT CANADIAN PERFORMERS flatomarkhamtheatre.ca / 905.305.7469
It all began in Nova Scotia late in 1969 when the Henman brothers, David and Ritchie, got together with their cousin Jim Henman and fellow musician Myles Goodwyn to form a band called April Wine. The name was chosen simply because they were two words that sounded good together. Fifteen studio albums, three live releases, numerous compilations, a boxed set, and thousands of concerts later, April Wine has become enormously popular in Canada, the United States and throughout the world.
Although Myles Goodwyn performed his last official show with April Wine in March 2023 in Truro, Nova Scotia, close to where it all started, he found his replacement in professional musician Marc Parent, who was offered the same opportunity back in 2014 and finally accepted the role this past year. Despite being referred to as a “new lineup,” Brian Greenway has been part of the group for an impressive 46 years, while Richard Lanthier and Roy Nichol have been with the band for 13 and 11 years!
It’s true that Parent is the newest addition, but he is well versed with the music industry and brings much experience to the band. In the late 80’s,at the age 22, Marc joined a very popular recording band called Eight Seconds and lived the dream for two years. The band opened for major British stars such as David Bowie, Duran Duran, Paul Young, The Fix and toured North America with Wang Chung. After leaving the band in 1987, Marc movedto Montreal finished bachelor degree in music and started his band Wang Dang Doodle. With a group of experienced rockers like this, An Evening with April Wine will be sure to solidify the Band’s legacy as one of Canada’s most iconic acts!

Parent is no stranger to music... loaded with catchy melodies, draped over infectious guitar riffs, April Wine is smart enough to let the songs speak for themselves. Keep on rockin’.
