Freeway Gets the Go-Ahead in Ireland
B
us operator Go-Ahead Ireland has introduced Freeway Fleet Systems’ bespoke fleet management soft ware into its Irish operation. The system implementation began in March at the company’s Ballymount Depot and once concluded Go-Ahead Ireland will have full web app functionality, allowing all engineers to complete inspections, raise defects and request parts digitally, removing the need for any paper-based forms. It is Go-Ahead’s intention to later roll Freeway out to all other Irish depots that are planned to open in the coming months. Following an enquiry received by Freeway Fleet Systems in August last year from Chris Stringer, Head of Fleet Engineering at GoAhead Ireland, Freeway and its local sales and implementation partner, Genie Insights Ltd, has been working on a bespoke specification of Freeway for the bus operator. Over the last six months, Freeway and Genie Insights have met with various Go-Ahead Ireland and Go-Ahead Group divisions including Finance, IT and Engineering in order to design a system that can handle Go-Ahead’s unique organisational intricacies. Although based on the core Freeway system, the software company has been able to use its team of developers to create new, tailored solutions to meet Go-Ahead’s needs. As a result, Freeway Fleet Systems has successfully developed a number of solutions for complex integrations including a remote
authorisation process for all procurement to be handled in Newcastle, UK. Freeway has managed to provide an integration solution into Go-Ahead Group’s accounting system, Oracle, while also handling the VAT complexities that an operation in Ireland created. Matt Reeve, Director at Genie Insights commented on the deal: “Freeway Fleet Systems has established a reputation for developing solutions to meet even the most complex of requirements. GoAhead Ireland is a prime example of how we don’t just deliver an ‘off-the-shelf’ product. We’ve really listened to the various GoAhead departments to understand what they all need the system to do. Th is contract is also a testament to Freeway’s development and customer support team, who accept every challenge thrown at them. Th is is a really exciting project for Genie Insights as the Irish partner for Freeway. Having already implemented Freeway into a number of large transport operators on the Island or Ireland, it was about time we entered the passenger carrying market”.
First full-sized autonomous bus begins depot trials
T
he UK’s fi rst full-sized autonomous bus is now being trialled in a Manchester bus depot. The ground-breaking project – involving a single-deck vehicle – is part of a programme being delivered by transport operator Stagecoach in partnership with bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) and technology company Fusion Processing. The 11.5m ADL Enviro200 vehicle is now able to operate autonomously within Sharston depot, and the technology being used could also provide future road safety benefits for vehicles operating in manual mode. The ADL-manufactured bus has been fitted with the CAVstar system provided by Fusion Processing Ltd, and is being trialled by Stagecoach. The trial includes the bus being used in autonomous mode within the depot environment, to carry out movements such as parking and moving into the bus wash. The CAVstar control and sensing system was utilised successfully in the UK’s largest public trial of autonomous vehicles to date, in Greenwich last year, and a number of other projects. The system uses multiple sensor types including radar, LIDAR, optical cameras and ultrasound, along with satellite navigation to detect and avoid objects, in all weathers, day and night, and plan an optimum path for the vehicle. The soft ware being used in the pilot vehicle also forms the basis for a significant autonomous vehicle trial due to get underway in 2020 when a fleet of five FLEETBUS&COACH | Summer 2019
autonomous buses similar to this one will operate – carrying passengers - between Fife and Edinburgh, across the Forth Road Bridge Corridor. The vehicles in both trials will be used autonomously to Level 4 standard which means that a safety driver must remain on board in line with UK regulations. The technology can also be used to help improve the safety of road users in manually driven vehicles. For example, the sensor system on the vehicle can be used to provide assistance to the driver by warning of cyclists or pedestrians that may be in the blind spot or arrive unexpectedly close to the vehicle.

McGrath Coaches’s history stretches back to 1923 when a hack ney pl ate w a s issued to Patrick McGrath. Also
noteworthy is that Michael McGrath purchased a car from Jim Callery back in the mid 60s, so it was quite nostalgic to have Jim on hand for this special new keys presentation, with 2019 being Westward Scania’s and Jim’s 60th year in business.

New IVECO Daily Minibus: A new perspective for passenger transport the Daily Minibus Natural Power is also highly fuel-efficient and considering the lower price for compressed natural gas when compared with diesel, results in a very competitive cost per kilometre. Indeed, when factors such as fuel price, engine efficiency and energy value are taken into account, natural gas can generate cost savings in comparison with diesel. As such, it is an economically sustainable solution. Besides, the significantly lower sound level makes this vehicle remarkably clean and quiet, a major advantage in low-emission zones.
C
oinciding with the debut of the new IVECO Daily van range, IVECO Bus launched the new Daily Minibus to the international press at the CNH Industrial Village in Turin, Italy. IVECO Bus has designed the “minibus” version of the Daily, a vehicle which features the recognised qualities of the Daily combined with all the expertise of a passenger transportation industry leader. Th is new generation - available in diesel and alternatives energies – further improves on the outgoing model to meet all passenger transport needs: a school minibus, a shutt le minibus, an intercity bus with the largest passenger capacity in its category and a touring minibus for pleasant, comfortable travel. Sustainable development has always been a key value for IVECO Bus, and is now a reality thanks to alternative drivetrains such as electric and natural gas, developed in-house by the brand. A Pioneer in these technologies for over 20 years, the Blue Power offering, unique on the market, offers true freedom of choice between the two technologies – CNG & EV – to perfectly meet the specific requirements of different applications. The Daily Minibus Natural Power (NP) is equipped with a class-leading 3.0-litre 136hp FPT engine with 350 Nm of torque, while the environmental performance of the Daily Minibus Natural Power is just as good if not better than diesel: its engine complies with the Euro 6d standard, with 76 percent less particle emissions and 12 percent less nitrogen oxide emissions than a diesel engine, which already generates very low emissions. In real operating conditions in an urban context, the CO2 emissions of the CNG engine are 3 percent lower than those of the equivalent diesel engine. The application of Hi-Matic transmission to natural gas further improves this performance by extending the difference to 5 percent. In addition, when used with biomethane, CO2 emissions can be reduced even further, by up to 95 percent. It’s the fi rst time that the Natural Power engine is combined with the exclusive Hi-Matic 8-speed automatic transmission. In addition, FLEETBUS&COACH | Summer 2019
Launched in 2009 and continuously improved since, the Daily Minibus Electric has won many admirers thanks to its efficiency, versatility and complete respect for the environment, which extends all the way to 100 percent recyclable batteries. The Daily Minibus Electric is a unique vehicle that can be driven even in cities with very strict traffic restrictions. Th is zeroemission minibus is ideal for city centres and shutt le services. It has a range of 100 or 160 km with two or three high-density sodium nickel chloride batteries combined with high-power ultra-capacitors that improve the vehicle’s performance and battery life. The regenerative braking system recaptures kinetic energy and converts it into electricity to recharge the traction batteries. The flexible charging mode, patented by IVECO, is composed of an electrical outlet and a single plug that can recharge from a domestic outlet in 24 hours, from a public or private outlet in 10 hours, or in a public rapid-charging station in two hours. MY19 Daily Minibus’ new front grille has been extended to increase ventilation while protecting the engine and radiator. The entire steering system has been redesigned, so that the driver can make both axial and angular adjustments to the steering wheel and set up the perfect driving position. The smaller, leather multifunctional steering wheel puts a wide range of controls at their fi ngertips and leaves more leg room, adding to the overall comfort. The new instrument cluster features a TFT high-resolution colour display that provides a very user-friendly, intuitive interface with all the vehicle’s key sett ings and functionalities. The latest HiConnect infotainment system with voice recognition enables the driver to mirror their mobile device with Apple Car Play and Android Auto and use their apps in full safety while driving. It features a 7” screen, DAB radio, rear camera display, and TOM navigation system. New Daily Minibus introduces a wide range of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems to improve safety on board, with the Advanced Emergency Braking System and City Brake PRO preventing collisions at speeds below 50 km/h. Safety is always ensured with Adaptive Cruise Control and ProActive Lane Keeping Assist. Text: Jarlath Sweeney - editor@fleet.ie

J.J. Kavanagh & Sons Here’s to the next 100 Years
J
.J. Kavanagh & Sons, the Urlingford, County Kilkenny based company has been around for a long time. In fact, this year the family founded and owned firm is celebrating 100 years in the passenger transport business. There is usually a good story behind every passenger transport company in Ireland and J.J. Kavanagh & Sons is no different. The story began in 1919 when James and Mollie Kavanagh began operating a bus service between Urlingford and Kilkenny twice daily as well as providing a special excursion service on Sundays. James and Mollie’s two sons Matt hew and James continued to develop and expand the business through the 1940s and during this time the company increased fleet size and routes served. This included the introduction of several daily rural bus routes serving villages and towns across the South East and providing a vital link to these communities. An interesting and litt le known fact was that at this time the company also operated a very successful wholesale newspaper distribution business serving over 1,500 customers throughout the South of Ireland. Matt hew passed away in 1986 and his two sons, JJ and Paul, who were already working in the business, took on the roles of Joint Directors and General Managers. Under their leadership and direction, the company has expanded rapidly to become Ireland’s largest private coach operator.
FLEETBUS&COACH | Summer 2019
Today the statistics that describe the company’s operations are impressive to say the least, and the operational facts and figures could hardly have been envisaged by James and Mollie 100 years ago. J.J. Kavanagh & Sons currently operates a fleet of over 130 Fáilte Ireland approved coaches with a range of capacities from 33 to 53 seater to suit a wide variety of customer needs. The fleet can cover all types of travel from local services to extended tours around Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe. The company has also taken a strong presence in the executive travel sector with a number of dedicated vehicles to meet what is an increasing demand from the corporate sector. What is also notable is that the J.J. Kavanagh & Sons fleet has an average age of approximately 6 years and is constantly being updated with newer vehicles ordered to a higher specification. Appearance and presentation of passenger vehicles is paramount as passenger transport interacts directly with the customer and/ or the end user. Th is creates an opportunity to significantly influence the customer’s experience and ensure repeat business. Th is opportunity is one that J.J. Kavanagh & Sons makes the most of, as its vehicles are always clean and thanks to their distinctive livery, instantly recognisable. Currently the J.J. Kavanagh & Sons' fleet operates over 300 services daily, and carried over 3.5 million passengers in 2018 with continued growth forecast for 2019. The bus fleet covered over 7 million road kilometres in 2018. The significant expansion

on intercity routes has been delivered through the acquisition of a number of coach companies across Ireland in Naas, Carlow, Portlaoise, Nenagh, Waterford, and Clonmel as well as opening an office in Dublin City Centre. The company also has an operation in England where it acquired Mullanys Coaches in London. Th is division of the J.J. Kavanagh & Sons business operates an extensive fleet of coaches and buses in the London area. To operate a high profi le fleet to this standard does come at a cost, and to maintain those standards requires further and continuous investment. On that subject current Director JJ Kavanagh stated: “To achieve this we invest significantly in upgrading and expanding our coach fleet every year.” Tourism is an important source of revenue for Ireland, and J.J. Kavanagh & Sons plays an important role in ensuring that Ireland is portrayed in a positive manner to all tourists. The company works in close association with many incoming and outgoing travel agents across Ireland and Europe by providing luxury transport for thousands of tourists visiting our shores annually. To achieve this requires not only a pristine fleet of vehicles, but also needs competent, well trained, and customer focused drivers - as any passenger will tell you. Being passenger focused means being able to focus on and assess the differing needs of a wide variety of passengers. To develop this focus each year all staff undertake an extensive training programme in Disability Equality to create a better understanding of how to assist all passengers regardless of their abilities. Th is programme is of particular relevance to the J.J. Kavanagh & Sons' drivers. While a clean vehicle is important, it is always the driver that is remembered from any journey. To this end the company is a valued member of a number of trade and tourism associations and promotional bodies, in addition to being an influential member of the Coach Tourism & Transport Council of Ireland (CTTC). It is efforts such as these that contributed to J.J. Kavanagh & Sons winning the 2014 Fleet Bus & Coach Awards ‘Coach Operator of the Year’ (Commuter).
one of the most modern, reliable and comfortable operating in the European marketplace. To maintain its leader status into the future, the company has developed a top-class e-commerce system, providing customers with flexible online booking and payment options including Online Ticket Booking and Smartcard Usage. Adopting the benefits of modern technology ensures real customer convenience and greater real-time consumer insight on travelling preferences and frequency. “Our unrelenting commitment to continuous improvement means that we are always looking for ways to enhance the customers’ travel experience,” added JJ. One example of this commitment to improve will see the introduction of a contactless card option later this year. The system will enable customers to board their coaches and record their travel with a simple tap of their card. “We will continue to listen to our customer’s needs, invest in new vehicles, staff development, and new technologies, placing us in a very strong position to expand and grow our offering over the next 100 years.” Successful development and growth over the past 10 decades has come about through the process of listening closely to consumers and responding proactively to their needs. J.J. Kavanagh & Sons continues to operate successfully with the support of a 250 committed workforce who perform their jobs competently, professionally and always efficiently. J.J. Kavanagh would seem to be att aining the aspirations mentioned in its mission statement: “Our mission is to provide our customers with the highest levels of service, quality, comfort and safety.”
Over the last hundred years, J.J. Kavanagh & Sons has developed a proud track record and tradition in Ireland as a brand leader in its sector. To achieve this, the company invests significantly in upgrading and expanding its fleet every year to ensure it is Text: Paul White - paul@fleet.ie

Wallace Travel makes first stop with Volvo Bus
R
osegreen, County Tipperary based Wallace Travel, a family run business established in 1972 which specialises in luxury coach tours, has taken delivery of a new Volvo B11R JHV2 coach as the latest addition to its fleet. Having not previously purchased coaches from Volvo, Gus Wallace, Wallace Travel Owner & Director was impressed with the styling and comfort of the JHV2 which incentivised the purchase: “We’ve always known that Volvo was a possibility for us, but it was the B11R JHV2 combination that tipped the balance. We really like the Jonckheere bodywork, and the style and comfort of the coach is really impressive.
“We’re a growing business and we need to be sure that we’re making the right investments for the future. We hope that the B11R will become a longstanding cornerstone of our fleet, and are assured that with the aftercare from Irish Commercials and the availability of parts, that will be the case,” Gus added. Add that to the fuel economy and known reliability of the Volvo chassis, and we knew we were onto a winner.” The B11R JHV2 for Wallace Travel is a 12.57 metre two axle vehicle with onboard toilet and the new 53-seater has gone straight into operation serving tours, school transport and group hire throughout Ireland.
Dave Porter, Volvo Coach Sales Manager, commented: “We are thrilled to provide Wallace Travel with their fi rst Volvo as their latest fleet investment. Easytrip Launch Access Control Services for Bus & Coach Companies
E
asytrip is probably best known as the provider of toll tags mounted to vehicles’ windscreens. Easytrip is Ireland’s leading independent e-payment transport service and the main tag provider for large fleets, yet Easytrip offers so much more. It has over 240,000 registered Irish customers who choose the convenience of faster payments for a variety of transport services through a single mobility account. In addition to managing customer payments such as tolls and parking nationwide via Ireland’s only multi-purpose tag, Easytrip offers breakdown and puncture repair services to improve journey times. Coach Parking Access Control Services Easytrip’s Bus & Coach Customers expressed their concerns with legacy third party access control systems in recent years and asked to help build a solution to meet their evolving needs. As a result, John McConnell, Commercial Fleet Manager at Easytrip, is delighted to announce the official launch of Easytrip’s Coach Parking Management System in Ireland. In addition to the added convenience for fleet accessibility, Easytrip’s solution also offers evidence-based transport data collection, monitoring and compliance controls. The service is now live at one of Ireland’s busiest Coach Stations in Galway, City Park @ Galway Coach Station with automated systems managing hundreds of coach and bus transactions seamlessly each day. Easytrip’s services recognises bus coach entries via a toll tag mounted on the windscreen which allows frictionless access and exit to the coach park for authorised vehicles without manual intervention. All transactions and times are recorded in real-time for revenue assurance and fleet management purposes. The service significantly improves throughput times at stations while secure authentication reduces fraud for operators.
FLEETBUS&COACH | Summer 2019
Easytrip’s Coach Parking Access Control Services can be tailored for each operator's need, with dedicated, experienced account managers working with operators from design stages, through to installation and 24/7 support. CTTC and Dublin City Council Easytrip has been working with Kevin Traynor, National Director of the Coach Tourism & Transport Council (CTTC), to obtain a deep insight into the parking challenges facing operators and Easytrip’s new service is designed to help address these. CTTC is the representative body for Ireland’s Coach Touring Companies and Irelands Private Bus Operators.
CTTC recently petitioned Dublin City Council by way of a submission to oppose a proposed €9 charge for all coach parking bays in the Dublin City area which would have had a detrimental effect on businesses and tourism hubs in the Dublin area. The Coach and Bus sector currently contributes in excess of €500 million in annual revenue to the national economy
through the provision of Coach Tourism, Cruise Business, Scheduled Services, Private Hire, Conferencing and Event transportation. A significant portion of this revenue is generated in Dublin City. The benefits of this revenue are a lifeline to businesses and retail outlets throughout the city who have experienced significant reductions in footfall in recent years. However, Kevin stated that while CTTC companies contribute such strong revenue streams to the State, there is a significant opportunity to increase valuable investment in this area to further improve infrastructure. For example, the current Coach Park facility in the Docklands area in Dublin efficiently operates between 7:00am and 7:00pm, five days a week, however it doesn’t allow for services outside of these hours or special event parking, both of which would improve service to the public and operators. CTTC has also made a proposal to introduce dedicated bus corridors on the arterial routes into Dublin from its commuter belt. Easytrip will continue to work with CTTC members and any other operators interested in a secure access control system. Mini Bus of the Year Award 2019
for a few weeks and announced at a trade show such as the IAA (Germany), or Busworld (Belgium). However, on this occasion the winner was announced at a special dinner on the fi nal night, adding to the excitement of the event. The vehicle test drives, which started at the facilities of Feria de Madrid, were made on a 12.1 kilometre route, typical of those found in conventional public transport networks.
T
he Spanish capital Madrid was the venue for the 2019 edition of the second ever “Minibus of the Year Award”. Judged by members of the IB&COY (International Bus & Coach of the Year Jury) on which Fleet Bus & Coach represents Ireland, five vehicles were in contention for the main prize. Spanish organisation IFEMA (Institución Ferial de Madrid S.A.) was a collaborating organiser of the event in association with the IB&COY Jury. IFEMA is best known for the successful hosting of the bi-annual Spanish Bus show (FIAA) in association with the journal Autobuses & Autocares, official representative in Spain for the International Bus & Coach of the Year awards. Over three days the buses were road-tested in the suburbs of Madrid before a further scrutineering selection process was undertaken by the 21 member expert panel. Selecting a winner on this occasions was made more challenging by the fact that a variety of engine types were being compared. In most of these type of competitions the identity of the winner is kept secret FLEETBUS&COACH | Summer 2019
The nominations for the Mini Bus of the Year Award 2019 were, in alphabetical order: • Ferqui Sunrise (Iveco Daily chassis) • Indcar Strada e-City • IVECO Daily (CNG) • MAN TGE 4x4 Inter City • Mercedes-Benz Sprinter City C75
Ferqui Sunrise
COVER | BUS AWARD | 21 Spanish bus builder Ferqui, a family owned business, sells 80% of its production to the local market. Each year around 40 buses are exported into the UK and currently there are a few examples on Irish roads. Indeed, it is the company’s intention to improve its presence in the Irish market in the next few years. Although Ferqui uses Mercedes-Benz light commercial vehicle chassis in general, the semi-urban test vehicle was built on the Iveco Daily 70C19 chassis. The bus can carry 33 passengers and one wheelchair in various configurations. What was surprising was that the drivetrain featured a manual gearbox, (although an automatic option is available at an addition cost of €2,000).
distance required, which goes from 150km to 210km. Although the bus is a prototype, it will go into production by the end of 2019 and the company expects to produce roughly thirty units initially. The Indcar Strada has a 135kW electric motor and will cost between €280k and €300k, depending on the battery option chosen.
Iveco Daily Blue Power NP (CNG)
Ferqui has put its own stamp on the cabin - while the various Iveco Daily features may be familiar, many new features are built in and the whole ambiance is bright inside. We noted that the passenger area’s back section is out of the drivers’ view, and while it is a comfortable area it could be a space that could encourage some anti-social behaviour on routes. That said this area and the ease of wheelchair access was one of the best of the test vehicles on trial. A natural gas powered option will be available next year, currently this model is costing €120k.
Indcar Strada e-City low entry
Indcar is a traditional Spanish family owned business, building buses for over 130 years. It is dominant in France and Italy and has 20 dealers throughout Europe, including Ireland. Its area of speciality is in the 9 to 37 seat segments, using MAN, DAF, Mercedes-Benz and Iveco chassis.
Powered by a Euro 6, 3.0 litre 136hp natural gas powered engine, this vehicle offered a 300km range distance between fi lls. The bus presented had a coach fi nish with overhead racks and USB points at each seat. On the road the Daily Natural Power (NP) is quiet and the small steering wheel feels a litt le different but is not problematic. Entering the driving position is easy with lots of space around the front door. 22 coach seats were fitted in a 2+1 layout. There is an option to take out the back row of seats to add luggage for airport transfer work or to fit a wheelchair user. The bus tested had a wheelchair lift tucked under the back doors. Ride and handling is comfortable and sure footed, this maybe because the gas tanks are mounted underneath, giving it more stability. For passengers there are good all round views through the deep side windows. While there are significant reductions in noise and emission levels, it comes at a price. As tested the cost of the Daily Blue Power NP is €80k, that is €20k more than the diesel version.
MAN TGE4.180 Inter City 4x4
The bus entered by Indcar for these Awards is electric powered, based on an Iveco Daily platform. It is a roomy bus, bright inside, helped by roof windows. Seating in the version tested accommodated 8 passengers and room for 14 standees. Passengers travel in a theatre type saloon seating arrangement and the entrance door is good and wide. The driver is a litt le isolated and some might fi nd the cockpit area a litt le claustrophobic, but once seated it is comfortable with litt le or no blind spots. It is extremely quiet. The batteries are upright and fitted to the rear of the bus. As I was unaware of that before driving, I was surprised that their position did not make the bus a litt le too heavy or cumbersome to drive. There are options of 3, 4, or 5 battery packs depending on the range www.fleet.ie
22 | COVER | BUS AWARD MAN Truck & Bus presented a 4x4 option as a test vehicle for a special reason. The purpose was to demonstrate how this allwheel drive bus can operate in an economical way as a feeder service from areas like the snowy Alpine regions to the mainline suburban and urban routes. MAN claims that in the past buying a minibus with 4-wheel drive capability was expensive and could involve some compromise, but not anymore. Th is bus tested was powered by a 2.0 litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel 177hp (Euro 6) combined with an 8-speed auto box. Seating for 11+1+1 or 3 wheelchairs is provided, with an option to convert the vehicle to a courier type van. So far this year, MAN has delivered 200 minibuses in various configurations and expects to deliver 500 units by year end in both left and right hand drive formats. We found the interior of the bus to be a litt le dark, but it drives like a car and has all of the safety features from the Volkswagen Group ranges. Built in Poland at the new Volkswagen Crafter factory, the custom fi nish is completed in Germany to the customer’s individual specification. Depending on seating layout, luggage space can be up to 3m2 . As tested this bus is priced at €70,000.
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter City 75
FLEETBUS&COACH | Summer 2019
Built at the Mercedes-Benz Minibus plant in Dortmund, Germany, where up to 1,500 vehicles roll off the production line every year, the City 75 can carry up to 38 passengers. As a completely new design almost everything on the bus is restyled. Powered by the Daimler OM651 161hp engine and combined to the Mercedes-Benz 7G-Tronic + auto box, it makes for a powerful and smooth journey. Inside the interior fi nish is bright and spacious, with a number of grab handles for standing passengers to hold on to. One of the enhancing design features of the new body is a slight curvature in its shape which allow passengers to get a better view. Unusually for passengers there are no vibration or ratt les in the bus to complain about. All seats feature USB connections and the deep windows ensure excellent views. It drives well and some of the features, such as the cross-wind safety function provide comfort to drivers as well as the other standard safety features which we have come become accustomed to on Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Price as tested, is €145k. And the winner is ….. After three days of extensive testing the jury selected a winner in the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter City 75. Presenting the award to Berand Hulsman, Marketing Director for the Mercedes-Benz Minibus Division, Jury Chairman Tom Terjesen congratulated the company on the award winning, new innovative bus, stating: “The new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter generation stands out for its onboard technology and a design that combines a clearly-defi ned style with smooth and fluid shapes.”

Charity Open Day at Alexander Dennis in raises £1,600
A
n estimated 3,000 people attended the Open Day at the Alexander Dennis bus chassis factory in Guildford organised to support two local charities, Challengers and Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care, with just short of £1,600 raised for their causes. Visitors came from as far afield as Hong Kong and Singapore to join local residents and commercial vehicle enthusiasts on the day. Tours of the plant, vehicle displays and rides, specialist talks on electrical systems and hybrid technology, and build-a-bus activities for children were just some of the attractions put on for visitors by a team of 40 volunteers from the company’s Guildford team.
Vintage vehicles displayed the breadth of the engineering and manufacturing heritage of Dennis, with lorries, lawn mowers, preserved buses and fire engines on show. A 1936 open-top Dennis Ace fire appliance lovingly known as ‘the Pig’ – in service until 1997 as the Dennis works’ own fire engine – offered rides that drew long queues around the local area.
Production supervisor Claire Barrett, who led the organisation team, commented on the success of the event said: “I feel very honoured to have been involved in the open day, seeing so many people enjoying themselves, taking part in the activities, being curious and asking questions about the products and systems we use. The balance of content about the past, present and future of the company was just right and enjoyed by all.” * Towards the end of last month, Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL), has been acquired by NFI Group Inc. (NFI), North America’s largest and most diversified bus and coach manufacturer.

National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham Mellor’s next generation of the Orion E electric bus stars
M
ellor, also part of Woodall Nicholson’s bus division, showcased the latest version of its all electric bus, the Orion E, at NEC in Birmingham.
Described by Mellor as the breakthrough all-electric small bus when fi rst launched in 2017, the Orion E is the world’s fi rst completely low floor small bus designed to operate effectively in both the commercial bus market and parallel services, such as welfare and on demand responsive services. Mellor’s Managing Director John Randerson commented at its introduction: “Over the last 12 months our engineers have tested exciting advancements in electric vehicle technology, specifically concerning battery performance, drivetrains and charging systems. Successful testing confi rmed that the time is now right to uplift the Orion E’s specification to reflect these advancements and to include small improvements suggested by operators who have learnt from real experiences working with the Orion E in diverse operational and geographic environments.” Under the bonnet, the all-new 96Kw 6 phase motor is technologically advanced to deliver a peak torque value of 5,000Nm to the front wheel drive system which has improved hill climbing capability to 25% at up to 5000 Kgs GVW. Two independent strings of batteries can be combined to deliver 92 kWh of energy providing the fully occupied 16 passenger bus with a design range that exceeds 160km between charges even when utilising the inbuilt climate control system.
“Mellor’s core values build on the principle that we will deliver customers best-in-class passenger and operator experiences. As part of The Woodall Nicholson Group, we are committed to delivering flexible passenger transport solutions that meet changing market demands and to investing in product research that leads to innovation and continuous improvements. The Orion E embodies these principles by delivering technological advancements to further enhance an already excellent vehicle. We are confident operators and passengers alike will fi nd much to like and experience with the Orion E,” added John. The Orion E is available to order with immediate effect in both left-hand, and right-hand drive versions and will be rolling off the production line in June 2019.

Aside from the striking two-tone green and yellow livery highlighting their green credentials, the new buses are, from a passenger’s perspective, almost identical to the hundreds of low-emission Euro 6 double-deck diesel buses that have been in service in Dublin and over the past 5 years. They offer the same att ractive interior design incorporating a low-floor offering easy access for all passengers, a dedicated wheelchair space, a dedicated

Together with automatic engine stop-start technology that switches-off the engine while the bus is stationary, the powertrain on board the new buses can deliver fuel savings of at least 30% over earlier diesel buses, producing less CO2 and fewer particulates that have been found to adversely affect air quality in large cities. buggy space with fold-up seats, priority seating and USB charging sockets. Balanced tourism infrastructure for the regions needed
Back Seat Driver by Sean Murtagh
A
few weeks ago I listened to a panel discussion on the radio about the need to manage our tourism industry and in particular the problems with overcrowding at some of our popular resorts and att ractions. Some of the examples mentioned were the Cliffs of Moher, Ring of Kerry, Dingle and its Peninsula. One of the panellists suggested withdrawing any Government funding where an attraction or resort clearly had enough business. Not sure how that would work and if it did, how effective it would be. But what if we looked at it the other way around? Have the operators of these att ractions ever displayed arrogance or disregard to tourists and the industry in general? One such example that came to my mind immediately is Dublin Port, which in the near future will be putt ing a restriction on the number of Cruise ships docked in order to facilitate development work. Dublin City Council is proposing substantial increases in parking charges for coaches in the City Centre. It is hard to see this as anything other than Dublin saying, “we have enough, we will now pick and choose what we want and we will charge what we like. Th is is in contrast with towns and cities like Sligo, Ennis and Dungarvan which have provided free and well positioned parking for coaches visiting them. Successive Governments have insisted that it is their policy to push development out of Dublin and into the regions. The actions of Dublin Port and the City Council should be the trigger to de-centralise their investment away from the Capital. There are possibilities to provide berths for shipping, in particular Cruise ships, on the coast north and south of Dublin. Of course tour operators have a part to play here. In the last few weeks the proposed building of the Limerick/ Cork Motorway (M20) has been the source of comment by economists, suggesting that the project may not be value for money and that the allocation could be spent in a wiser fashion. Reduced journey times are essential for balanced development in the regions. The opening up of the motorway network has allowed tourists based in the regions make a return trip to the Capital. It also improves the reach from Cruise ships to more tourist destinations. Earlier this year Irish Ferries opted to move its new ship, the WB Yeats operating on its French service from Rosslare to Dublin.

A curious decision, but an opportunity for the Government to improve the road network to Rosslare Port. When the New Ross by-pass opens and the associated links it will bring improve the connectivity to Rosslare Port, litt le more would make a big improvement. Tourism has become one of the most important parts of the Irish economy and it will continue to grow. In the short term there is a big challenge facing not only tourism, but the whole economy. We cannot let the preparations for Brexit, however and what way it comes, cause paralysis in the rest of the economy and tourism in particular. Continued investment in our infrastructure throughout the country should be a priority for Government. At every chance Coach operators need to remind them of this.
