BUS LANE 2019 EU Bus/Coach market grows Figures from ACEA, the European automotive body, reveal that registrations of new medium and heavy buses and coaches over 3.5 tonnes across Europe during 2019 expanded by +1.8%, despite the negative performance of the segment during the second half of the year. It is worth noting that the Central European countries gave a strong boost to the marketplace contributing an additional 5.1% to the full-year total. Among the major Western European markets, only France (+8.8%) made a positive contribution to the region’s growth. The Irish market remained stagnant recording 445 unit sales, according to the SIMI, just one less than 2018. Volvo Bus remains the dominant brand supplier of fully integral and chassis/drivertrain coaches and buses.

PSV Glass & Glazing Ltd aftermarket's Van Hool Van Hool has signed an agreement with PSV Glass & Glazing to become its supporting partner, providing the full aftermarket service support for any replacement windscreens and body glass covering the company’s complete TX and EX model range. With over 250 employees operating from 5 regional locations in the UK (High Wycombe, Bristol, Manchester, East Kilbride and Derby) and 1 location in Ireland (Dublin), together with a fleet of 85 Distribution and Installation vans, PSV Glass & Glazing has a national reach in each country and can offer a 24/7 service. In order to offer the ultimate glass service to Van Hool customers, PSV is further increasing its existing comprehensive replacement glass stocks to ensure that a rapid replacement is virtually guaranteed.

3rd Minibus of the Year Awards The third edition of the Minibus of the Year Awards will be held during the International Bus & Coach Trade Fair FIAA, which will take place at the Feria de Madrid fairgrounds from October 6-9, 2020. 22 members of the International Bus/Coach Awards will judge and assess the contenders during a series of appraisals (Minibus Euro Tests). The first edition of the Minibus Euro Tests was held in Spring 2017, with the Iveco Tourys model elected the winner. In April 2019, the MercedesBenz Sprinter City 75 won the title. Bus Éireann extends contract with MiX Telematics

B

us Éireann has extended its current contract with MiX Telematics, the global provider of fleet and mobile asset management solutions, following the initial deployment which yielded successful results for the national passenger transport company. The semi-State bus and coach operator’s trust in MiX Telematics’ products was gained from an initial roll out of 318 Bus Éireann vehicles fitted with the South African company’s telematics’ systems. Some key points which initiated the contract extension include fuel savings, improved safety and meeting compliance standards for Ireland and the National Transport Authority. “Bus Éireann is committed to introducing a vehicle f leet wide telematics system to support the organisation’s goals and objectives. We are focussed on providing our staff with the information and support needed to optimise performance and enhance both safety and the journey experience for our customers. We look forward to working with MiX Telematics to delivering on our goals,” said Allen Parker, Chief Customer Officer, Bus Éireann. The next phase will see an additional 418 vehicles that will be fitted with MiX Fleet Manager, RIBAS and MyMiX, all of which will work in synergy to meet the standards of Bus Éireann. Furthermore, the existing fleet (318 vehicles) will be upgraded. “We’re proud that a customer of Bus Éireann’s reputation believes in our products and service delivery in order to meet their own commitment to passenger safety and unrivalled customer service. We are fully behind ensuring that the ongoing partnership continues to be supported by our product offering in this deployment,” added Charles Tasker, MiX Telematics Chief Operating Officer.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland public transport services provider, Translink, has renewed its fleet management contract with MiX Telematics for a further 12-months. Originally taken out in 2012, the contract provides a bespoke range of connected services across Translink’s f leet of 1,449 passenger-carrying vehicles. In addition to monitoring driver and vehicle performance, Fleet Manager captures engineering data to provide advance warning of events such as engine overheating. Two other key functions of the solution are the integration of Fleet Manager with Translink’s ticket machines to provide a single sign-on and ID point for drivers, and a bridge height warning feature. Fitted to all double-deckers, the bridge height warning system detects bridges which have been geo-fenced by MiX Telematics and provides the driver with an audible alarm whenever any of these bridges are approached. “For us, MiX Telematics delivers the information we require to manage our fleet in a clear, simple and efficient way, hence our decision to extend the contract for another year,” comments David Curry, General Manager, Bus Operations for Translink. “In particular, the red-amber-green ‘RAGs’ driver reports generated by the system enables us to monitor the performance of our driving staff easily and rapidly in order to identify areas where additional training would be beneficial. The other features we currently employ include engineering data and bridge-height monitoring. Both are important to us in that they help minimise downtime and enhance safety in our operations. For the future, we are looking to extend the benefits provided by MiX Telematics by developing a system of real-time traffic information to link to our vehicles, bus stops and the Translink journey planner app.”

MAN Truck & Bus brings new lease of life for electric vehicle batteries

I

n the Bergedorf quarter of Hamburg, a container consisting of used batteries with a total capacity of 500 kWh has been connected to the charging network at the Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein (VHH) depot. There, MAN Truck & Bus and VHH are working together to test how used batteries perform after initial use in vehicles and as a stationary energy storage system, under real-world operating conditions. The white container containing 50 batteries – which were previously installed in Volkswagen Passat GTE cars - are mounted on racks and then interconnected via battery management to form a large battery. One objective of the project is to develop a flexible battery storage concept which allows for the replacement of batteries. Since directly disposing of batteries which were installed in vehicles is not environmentally sound, the two companies

Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein and MAN Truck & Bus were keen to put reusing these batteries in a stationary storage system to the test. Different operation aspects are tested using the large storage system, in order to optimise power consumption at the VHH depot. This includes improved utilisation of the network and cushioning of peak loads when charging electric buses, according to Alexander Adler, responsible for the second use energy storage system project at MAN Truck & Bus. “With the peak shaving method, the storage system can reduce up to 600 kW of peak load, and thereby lower the costs when using electricity,” he said. Additionally, the project partners anticipate new findings on the ageing performance of the batteries, on efficient battery management and on the life cycles of future battery technologies. Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein GmbH, which is head-quartered in

Hamburg, employs over 1,600 people and provides transportation for over 100 million passengers a year. The fleet comprises approximately 560 buses, which are to be converted to electric drive in the coming years. Testing of the second use energy storage system is taking place as part of the mobility partnership between the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the Volkswagen Group – which MAN is also part of. The partners are working together on innovative solutions, in order to make urban mobility safer and more environmentally friendly, reliable and efficient. www.fleet.ie

irline passengers through Dublin Airport staying at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Ireland and Holiday Express Inn are commuting in style and silence on board a new Volvo Bus 7900e, the fi rst electric bus to go into service in Ireland. Operating a round trip every 30 minutes, the project was brought about by a three way partnership between Volvo Bus, Crowne Plaza Hotel (part of the Tifco Hotel Group) and ESB – Ireland’s leading energy supplier, Replacing diesel fuelled buses run previously on the service, the new zero emission bus is a Generation 2 Volvo 7900e with charging being provided outside the Crowne Plaza Hotel by a high power CCS Combo 2 150kW system. Aftermarket support is provided by Volvo dealer, Irish Commercials from its nearby Santry branch. Nick Page, Managing Director for Volvo Bus UK & Ireland, which supplied the vehicle said this project was two years in the planning and installation of the charging infrastructure. “The 7900e is a proven vehicle having been tried and tested in countries across Europe and we know the significant contribution it can make to improving air quality. More than 150 7900e buses have already been sold and are now in service. For a considerable time now it has been

our vision to develop a range of vehicles to deliver improved air quality for those who live and work in towns and cities. Along with the 7900e, these solutions include hybrids, full electric and flexible charging options,” explained Nick. Five years ago Volvo Bus commenced its fi rst electric bus route in its home city of Gotenberg in Sweden, connecting the two main universities in the city. A key feature on that fi rst route was an indoor stop at a café. With the 9700e’s silence and zero emission tail pipe, the universities were happy to integrate the bus into the confi ned area. When Volvo Bus was working with management from the Crown Plaza Hotel to specify the vehicle, a key requirement from the Hotel was that when a client boarded the bus at Dublin Airport, they had a sense of being in the Hotel with a bright spacious interior with ample luggage space. At the official handover, Garret O’Neill, General Manager for the Crowne Plaza Dublin Airport & Holiday Inn Express Dublin Airport, commented: “As a company we are always looking to the future and adopting facilities and services that will improve our guests’ experiences and benefit our local community and environment. Over the past number of years, we have taken a number of significant measures to reduce the hotels’ carbon footprint. 2020 Bus Euro Test comes to Limerick using electric buses and delivery trucks in the cities has come to the forefront of the passenger and goods transport agenda. While it will take some time until there are significant numbers of electric buses in the national fleet, the number of electric buses operating in the cities and airports around Europe is increasing. As the technology improves, particularly in the area of batteries size and capacity, the cost is coming down. Some manufacturers claim that the TCO (total cost of ownership) of diesel and electric buses are almost on par with each other. However, there is a considerable amount of work in creating and installing the infrastructure to operate electric buses.

E

ach year members of the International Bus & Coach of the Year Jury (IBOY/ ICOY) select a bus or coach to carry the prestigious title for the following twelve months. On alternative years a bus or coach is selected as the overall award winner. For the 2020 award, the Jury selected the MAN Lion’s Coach. Last June, five coaches competed for the prestigious award with the trials held in Sibiu, Romania. Th is May the judging and the test driving event will be staged in Ireland for the fi rst time, with Limerick as the chosen location for the selection process which will be held between the 18 - 21 of May. Event host Fleet Bus & Coach magazine, which represents Ireland on the International

Tom Terjesen, Chairman of the IBOY/ICOY Jury

Jury was successful in attracting the event to the country. “It promises to be a most interesting occasion because all of the entries are full electric, zero-emission vehicles,” explained Sean Murtagh, Irish jury member. “While Ireland has been slow in introducing electric buses to the commuter fleet in general, the streets of Limerick will see electric, emission-free public transport for one week. While the full line up of buses has not been confi rmed yet, it is expected that there will be six or seven fi nalists, from the main manufacturers,” he added. Going Electric With all the debate about the need to protect and decarbonise the environment,

How the IBOY is judged and selected In the months leading up to the competition most of the manufacturers will arrange a test drive in the home country of the jury member. This test will normally be carried out in an environment that will challenge the bus and driver. In the case of a city bus, most of the driving will be done in city and town centres, allowing the driver to see how manoeuvrable the vehicle is and also how effective and comfortable the bus is from a passenger point of view. During the week of the actual test driving event, the fi rst day is devoted to acceleration, braking and noise tests. Using specialised equipment the testers will validate the readings and measurements claimed by the manufacturers. Each brand is allowed two sessions with the jury. At the fi rst session the jury get a technical presentation on the bus, using traditional power point and now also video. For the second presentation, the bus becomes the classroom. Representatives from the manufacturer point out the features of the bus, paying particular attention to the improvements from the previous versions. Two days are then spent driving on a pre-arranged test route. All jurors get the opportunity to sit behind the wheel and generally a technical representative from

PREVIEW I | 11 the manufacturer will be on hand to point out the different handling features. On the fi nal day, the jury members meet and discuss their opinions and experiences in a structured way, fi nally voting to select the winner. The winner will be announced at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show 2020 in Hannover, Germany this September, with the successful model proudly displaying the IBOY 2021 logo. Chairman of the IBOY Tom Terjesen is the Chairman of the IBOY/ICOY Jury. Based in Norway, he is the editor and owner of Bussmagsinet, which he founded in 2002. Previously he was a tour coach driver and still drives on occasions. At the selection announcement of the venue for this year’s competition Tom said: “Bringing the competition to Ireland and to Limerick is exciting and challenging. For most of us on the jury, we will be driving on the wrong side of the road! (right-hand-drive). On a more serious note we are looking forward to visiting Ireland and the Mid-West region in general. Th is year we are testing only electric buses and that too will make the event very interesting.” The IBOY/ICOY Jury Established in 1989, the Jury has grown in numbers over the decades. Dedicated trade publications from 23 European countries are represented on the adjudication panel by specialist and experienced journalists. In most cases the member will have a background in the passenger transport industry and come from different parts of the sector. “Some have been bus and coach drivers and still continue to drive part time, which gives them a clear advantage

when it comes to making comment on the various buses up for test and more importantly when it comes to selecting a winner,” stated Sean. Preparing for Electric Buses Hosting the event in Limerick has presented Fleet Bus & Coach with some challenges in terms of providing power to re-charge the test vehicles. “It would be very simple to pull up to refuel with diesel at a service station but with electricity it is a little more difficult. Two people have come to our assistance. Mark Daly of Eninserve Ltd., and Conor Molloy, Independent Energy Adviser, who is helping with the planning and organisation,” said Sean. •

Electronic Engineer Mark Daly has over twenty years’ experience in energy and e-mobility. He advises companies to optimise their power consumption, integrating renewable energy, battery storage and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Conor Molloy has been helping fleet owners reduce emissions and save money at the same time. Th rough mentoring and training, he enables bus and truck companies to reduce their fuel consumption.

Ardnacrusha Hydro Station A special treat for the IBOY Jury will be a visit to Ardnacrusha, one of the biggest construction projects ever undertaken by any Irish Government. The HydroElectric Power Station at Ardnacrusha, along the river Shannon was built in the early 1920s. It took over four years to complete and opened in 1929. Although situated just north of Limerick city, the facility is in County Clare. At the time it cost €5 million to construct, which was one fifth of the country’s national budget. During the construction phase the project was referred to as “The Shannon Scheme”. Today, fi ft y five people are employed there and while up to the time of World War II, it provided most of the electric power for the country, it now provides less than 5%. Ardnacrusha was recently described as a “powerful symbol of bold thinking” as the Shannon river, a natural resource, was diverted through a series of canals to create clean electricity and returned to the city of Limerick. Clean and unharmed, it makes its way to the Atlantic Ocean. When you think about this, Ireland now needs a similar bold step to decarbonise its national transport fleet.

“Both experts are very experienced in the area of electric mobility and working with companies to reduce their carbon foot print. Their background in Ireland is unrivalled in this area and their passion and enthusiasm for improving the atmosphere is admirable,” concluded Sean. Full details pre and post event will feature in the next edition of Fleet Bus & Coach magazine and on www.fleet.ie

Th is is the fi rst integral Volvo taken by the operator which currently has seven prime examples from the Swedish brand in its fleet, featuring Jonckheere and Sunsundegui bodywork. The recent award winning Irish Coach of the Year 2020, is a 13.1m, 3 axle, 53 seat coach which will predominantly be used for a range of touring work throughout Ireland. “Th is year we celebrate 70 years in business and we wanted to mark this milestone by investing in a special new vehicle, which is why we chose the Volvo 9900. It is completely different to any other coach in our fleet and we particularly like the aesthetic appearance and styling of the coach which lends itself to our distinctive blue livery colour,” explained Patrick Kennedy, owner and director of Kennedy Coaches. “As with any coach operator today, reliability and good fuel economy rates are vital to our business and this is what the Volvo B11R chassis delivers. In addition, we have an excellent

relationship with Murphy Commercials in Galway, which looks after all our service requirements, which was another reason for us going with Volvo again this time.” Established in 1950, Kennedy Coaches is a family owned and operated company with Patrick Kennedy being the third generation to take the reins. His father Paddy Kennedy is still involved in the business which offers transport for sightseeing and golf tours, school contracts, wedding services and corporate hire.

CTTC AGM highlights issues facing industry tried to introduce this charge for the 2019 season and CTTC coordinated a combined response from Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Ireland, ITIC, The Hotels Federation, Restaurants Association and Retailers which led to the proposal being suspended for the 2019 season. The CTTC has written to the DCC asking for official clarification and confirmation of the proposal and on receipt of same, will, with the full support of the bodies mentioned above, aggressively oppose its imposition.

T

he Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Coach Tourism & Transport Council (CTTC) took place in the Osprey Hotel, Naas on Saturday 29 February amid concerns within the passenger transport industry of a number of significant issues which have the potential to impact on sustainability and growth within the sector. The uncertainty in relation to Brexit continues, particularly post the temporary contingency measures which allow for continuation of services until the end of 2019. It appears the British Government may adopt an aggressive stance on trade negotiations which could see the imposition of border controls. These would substantially impact on the industry in relation to crossing delays, increased journey times, administration costs, as well as affect driving and working times. The recent spread of the Corona Covid-19 virus to northern Italy, the most significant outbreak in mainland Europe has the potential to adversely affect the forthcoming coach tourism season. While CTTC and European Alliance for Coach Tourism (EACT) were successful in having their proposed amendments to the Driving and Rest Time rules and the extension of the 12 day rule to national journey’s accepted by the European Union (EU) Transport Committee, the EU Parliament unfortunately decided to omit the amendments from the Mobility Package due to pressure from the employee concerns. Southern operators are at a FLEETBUS&COACH | Spring 2020

considerable competitive disadvantage because they must include the cost of two drivers on tours of more than six days. The CTTC will be working with its European counterparts to lobby for these amendments to be included when the issue comes up for review again in eighteen months’ time. The above, combined with the VAT differential between North and South where Northern operators can claim the tax on their inputs, is causing a significant loss of Coach Tourism revenue and associated employment as tour operators subcontract Northern companies. Lack of enforcement by the relevant statutory bodies further accentuates the problem. The CTTC will be working closely with senior Department of Tourism, Trade and Sport (DTTAS) officials for change in this area as part of the ongoing Brexit negotiations. The lack of transport infrastructure in our major towns and cities is a significant barrier to future growth within the sector, as there appears to be no joined up thinking between planners and statutory bodies. Ireland is currently witnessing massive growth in the provision of hotel accommodation without any provision for coach parking and set down/pick up. At a time when there has been a substantial decline in the volumes of domestic and international tourists numbers, Dublin City Council (DCC) is proposing to introduce a €9 charge for all parking locations throughout the city. The DCC

All of the political parties in their recent election manifestos expressed the desire to develop more usage of public transport and encourage a modal shift from the usage of private cars, thereby reducing congestion and carbon emissions in our major towns and cities. The CTTC fully supports this action, as private operators play a significant part in the delivery of public transport in Ireland. However, to date the proposals by CTTC to provide dedicated affordable Park & Ride locations within the hinterland of major towns and cities, together with the stand-alone Bus Corridors on the arterial routes - thereby guaranteeing affordability and journey times - have fallen on deaf ears. On a more positive note CTTC has commissioned consultants Hannigan Advisory to conduct a comprehensive review of the Private Coach & Bus Sector. This document is currently being finalised and will be launched in the near future. The 2020 Coach & Bus Show, officially launched by Minister Brendan Griffi n, will take place on the weekend of 21 & 22 November at the RDS Simmonscourt. On behalf of the organisers, CTTC National Director, Kevin Traynor stated that although it is early in the year yet, there are a significant number of stands already booked. Anyone wishing to book should log onto the CTTC website www.cttc. ie, proceed to the heading 'Coach & Bus Show 2020' and click on the link: Don’t Delay – Book A Stand

Van Hool continues to innovate Today the company employs more than 5,000 people directly, including 1,300 at its other production facility in Macedonia. As well as a bus and coach builder, Van Hool is also one of the biggest manufacturers of tanker trailers as well as container chassis skeletal semi-trailers for road transport. Outside Europe its main market is the USA. At the plant in Macedonia, 1,000 coaches are built each year, with extra capacity available to increase on this figure. At a briefi ng in Paris last month, Van Hool announced plans to build a new manufacturing plant in Tennessee, USA. The project is at an advanced stage and the fi rst buses are expected to roll off the production line in late 2021.

J

ust over seventy years ago the Van Hool family built its first bus. As Europe started to get on its feet after World War II, the Belgian company, based at Koninghooikt, near Brussels started production in 1947.

Initially employing forty people, six of who were family members, the fi rm, still in family ownership, is now run by the founder’s grandson, Wim Van Hool.

Van Hool in Ireland Over the past decades Van Hool has enjoyed a personal relationship with Irish coach operators. It all began half a century ago when Ford dealer and coach operator, Maurice Jackson from Cavan was its fi rst customer. In the following years, in a coproduction partnership with McArdles, an assembly plant was established in Dublin which manufactured coaches and buses for the Irish and UK markets, with the CIE Group its biggest customer. Sadly this facility closed in the early seventies but the fondness for Van Hool products continued to strengthen, mainly due to their quality build, reliability and longevity. Around that time, a new dealer and distributor was appointed, Dermot Cronin from Cork. Today, Cronin’s of Cork is the name for Van Hool in Ireland. The Cronin Group itself operates one of the largest fleets of luxury coaches in Ireland, offering an ideal shop window and mobile showcase for Van Hool. In recent times, Van Hool has made inroads with its tanker trailers sales to prominent Irish hauliers. Van Hool in the future Company CEO, Wim Van Hool is clear when talking about the future of the business. He is also honest in terms of where its future lies: “We are a big player

in niche markets.” Last year, for example, the Double Deck coach market in Europe totalled 600 units with Van Hool securing 25% of the marketplace in this segment. Coincidentally, its trailer division supplied 25% of all tankers sold across Europe. So far the company has no involvement in the South American or Asian markets, but expects to have a presence in both regions in the next five years. Nearer home, Van Hool plans to expand in all European markets in terms of sales and service. Developing and improving new technologies are essential, according to Wim: “We must be ready for whichever technology emerges in the future and always stay close to our customers.” Smart Vision Mirror From the EX range, built in Macedonia and the TX range produced in Belgium, Van Hool has a broad coach range of varying lengths and heights to suit various countries and customer’s specific operations. An option that will be available from next year onwards is its new, innovative “smart vision mirror”. At a trade press test drive in Paris, Van Hool demonstrated its new mirrorless bus. Part of the demonstration took place at night time, allowing drivers to see some of the advantages of the new system. A significant by-product of the new camera type “mirror” is that up to 5% fuel savings are achieved due to the improved aerodynamics. Of course, there are other savings such as the elimination of damaged mirrors, an issue that has led to many confrontations between coach owner and driver. On a personal note, I am a big fan of the mirror camera system on trucks and buses and I think while some refi nement may be necessary, they are the future in this regard. Finally, Van Hool has a strong reputation for always seeking improvement and for sure, its innovative projects will continue in the future. Text: Sean Murtagh - sean@fleet.ie

18 | PREVIEW II

A feast of coaches and buses at the ITT Hub Show 2020

O

ne of the biggest gathering of commercial vehicles takes place on 13-14 May at ITT Hub 2020. Staged at Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre, just outside London, the event also sees a free-to-attend high-level two-day conference - which has a high bus and coach content - alongside the exhibition. A range of vehicles from leading manufacturers will be on display both indoors and outdoors - and in a unique development for a UK show, there will be a two-mile long ride-and-drive facility - enabling visitors to experience vehicles in action. Quartix is providing its tracking services to show vehicle locations and monitor driver performance, so visitors can see its system in operation in real time.

It will also be fitted to the Yutong electric buses being used on a free shuttle to the event from Farnborough (Main) railway station. This will ensure that the service runs smoothly. Stand sales continue, with a number of negotiations ongoing as this issue closed for press, but already a number of ‘big-hitters’ are confirmed. At this early stage, few manufacturers have decided what vehicles they will be bringing, but they are all planning to show examples from across their ranges. Alexander Dennis Ltd (ADL) bus products will be exhibited by Dawsongroup, which has taken the opportunity to bring examples of its entire range. As an ADL partner, it supplies stock vehicles for lease and purchase and is popular with operators requiring vehicles at short notice, and has a variety of finance arrangements. Dawsongroup bus and coach is the UK’s leading rental, hire and leasing company, offering purchase, supply and finance for buses, coaches, accessible vehicles to every sector of the UK road passenger transport industry. Its client base includes the major UK bus groups, Transport for London operating companies, major UK airports, local authorities, provincial bus companies and coach tour operators. It offers a vast and varied range on buses, coaches and accessible vehicles from the UK’s premium manufacturers including Alexander Dennis, Volvo, Plaxton and Optare.

Yutong TC9 FLEETBUS&COACH | Spring 2020

In line with this, Dawsongroup will also be exhibiting coaches supplied by Scarborough-based Plaxton. Currently the leader in the supply of electric buses, with hundreds of single and double-deckers now in service in the UK, BYD is exhibiting in its own right, as it seeks to widen its customer base. While well known as the sole supplier of coaches to National Express, with its all-new Levante 3 now firmly established, Caetano is also a player in the electric bus market, with its single-decker e.City Gold being supplied to Abellio London this year. It has also signalled its intention to enter the hydrogen market, and has built a right-hand drive fuel-cell single decker - specifically for the UK market. EvoBus will be displaying its ever-popular range of MercedesBenz coach, bus and minibus products, which sees increasing numbers of varied models available to meet all needs, built at its European factories. Ford Motor Company is well known for its van and minibus products, with the Transit consistently at the top of the best-seller charts. As well as a large stand in the heart of the exhibition hall, it is also providing vehicles for the ‘ride-and-drive’ element of the show. New to the UK, Chinese bus manufacturer FTBCI (Xiamen-based Fengtai Bus & Coach International) is a joint venture with Ferrari F1 sponsor and engine manufacturer Weichai Power Group. FTBCI only makes buses and coaches for export, and is already established in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA. Its range includes diesel, pure electric, and hybrid. One of the giants of the UK and Ireland market, Volvo’s coach and bus range always attracts considerable interest and its display is sure to be most popular. Under new ownership, the newly reinvigorated Wright Group is noted for its early entry into the hydrogen fuel cell bus market, alongside its range of diesel and hybrid buses. This will be the first exhibition it has attended under its new ownership. Establishing itself as a major force in the coach industry, with its 9m TC9 midi-coach being the market’s bestseller, Yutong has also delivered pure electric coaches to UK operators, and its electric buses will be in use on the event shuttle to/from Farnborough Main railway station, courtesy of UK & Ireland dealership Pelican Bus and Coach.

FPT Industrial supplies Gas power to Van Hool Exqui.City’s hybrids

A

high-performance Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) engine designed and manufactured by FPT Industrial is providing the power behind a new hybrid trambus that has just entered service in France. Based on the latest Van Hool Exqui.City, the drivetrain features the new-generation FPT Industrial Cursor 9 NG engine, delivering maximum power of 300 hp/221 kW at 2,000 rpm, and torque of 1,300 Nm at 1,000 rpm.

At the heart of these Exqui.Citys, which commenced service in the municipality of Nimes, is the Italian brand’s six-cylinder gas engine customised for Van Hool that features ‘Start & Stop’, a technology that turns off the thermal engine when the vehicle approaches the bus stop. Th is reduces noise and gas exhaustion, bringing more comfort to the passengers. Once the passengers have boarded, the engine restarts, charging the electric batteries for traction. FPT Industrial has already sold 10 Cursor 9 NG engines to Van Hool, the Belgian manufacturer of vehicles for public transport, with a further six planned to complete the tender. In January, the 10 trambuses, each of which measures 24 metres in length, began operating a 20-minute service along the T2 line between Nîmes railway station and Carémeau CHU (the city’s hospital). It is estimated that around 25,000 people will use the shutt le every day. FLEETBUS&COACH | Spring 2020

VDL Bus & Coach supplies KVB Cologne with 53 electric Citeas

G

erman Public transport company KVB Cologne has ordered 53 electric VDL Citeas from VDL Bus & Coach, which will operate in the city centre of Cologne. The order is for 48 Citea SLFA-181 Electric articulated buses featuring BRT (Bus Rapid Transport) design and 5 Citea SLF-120 Electric buses. With this order, KVB is taking a new step towards full electrification of its bus fleet. Initial deliveries are scheduled for the last quarter of 2020. in Germany in the field of e-mobility. Boris Höltermann, Managing Director VDL Bus & Coach Deutschland GmbH explained about the transaction: “KVB ordered the fi rst fully electric articulated Citeas from us in 2016. The decision for this follow-up order makes us very proud because it shows that the vehicles have proven themselves in daily use. We will continue our trusting cooperation and, together with KVB, take another important step towards ‘Aiming for Zero’. The initial order of VDL Citeas SLFA-181 Electric marked KVB as the fi rst carrier in Europe to have articulated e-buses in its fleet. The number of electrically driven kilometres now amounts to almost 50 million. This milestone will be reached in the fi rst quarter of 2020. More than 300 electric VDL buses operate in the Netherlands alone. They contribute to a cleaner environment by saving more than 20,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

Themed Mercedes-Benz Citaro with eyecatching interior design

O

ver the years, bus operator Spillmann has put a lot of effort into making a journey on a public bus an experience to remember. To this end, the German company, based at Bietigheim, customises its MercedesBenz Citaro buses, creating unique vehicles for passengers to remember positively. Five versions of these themed buses have now entered service. By buying the Mercedes-Benz Citaro, Spillmann has opted once again for efficient hybrid components and the Sideguard Assist safety system. The radar-based Sideguard Assist supports the bus driver when making critical right turns. The system detects both stationary and mobile

obstacles such as cyclists or pedestrians. Citaro passengers can look forward to a very special interior because in addition to Wi-Fi, USB charging sockets and comprehensive infotainment, every vehicle is designed according to a theme. For example, there is a “Skipper” vehicle which has a floor made of ship planks and printed side walls that give passengers a view of the open sea or sandy beaches. In the “Astronomy” bus the floor is printed like the surface of the moon and the side walls show a view from the moon to the earth and into the universe. The “Bietigheim” vehicle visualises the highlights of the Bietigheim-Bissingen region on the side walls. The floor in this bus has a quarry stone design. In the “Vintage”

bus, Spillmann has given the side walls a colourful 1960s design and it additionally features untreated steel handrails with a vintage character. In the Citaro articulated bus the seat colours create four different zones. Th is “mobility” bus features an asphalt flooring design including tyre tracks and central reservation.

In Stena Property’s Fyrklövern residential area the reused bus batteries will be charged from solar panels fitted to the building roofs, and the electricity that is stored in them will be used for public areas such as laundries and outdoor lighting. When the battery pack’s energy storage capability ends, the batteries will be sent to Stena Recycling for recycling.

New (Ayats) Horizons at Dublin Coaches

A

t BUSWORLD 2019 in Brussels, AYATS presented the Horizon, its new double-decker. Featuring full LED headlights, it’s a ground breaking, modern and totally new aesthetic design that highlights its larger glass surface area for a more panoramic experience. Long established Spanish bus and coach builder Carrocerías Ayats is returning strongly into the Irish market with the delivery of 10 new Horizon double-deckers for new client Dublin Coaches. The Horizon is Ayats’ new and improved version of the double-decker that compliments and replaces the Eclipse range. Although in the case of the new Dublin Coaches’ fleet, the body has been built on a Scania chassis, Ayat’s expertise and flexibility allows it to construct the body on any manufacturer’s chassis, including an integral option with its own chassis. Considering the Horizon’s capacity to accommodate over 90 passengers, the improvements applied in this new model go far, sett ing new standards along the development phases. With its structure

made in stainless s steel and the side panels consisting of fibreglass, this new model is a safe bet against corrosion. In addition, this model features a more aerodynamic design that reduces the overall fuel consumption. On top of that, this unit has been designed to comply with the R.66 overturn regulation. Ayats is one of the very few double-decker manufacturers in a position to achieve that high safety ranking. Horizon is equipped with individual climate-control for every passenger and an independent air-con system for the driver. Th is unit is configurated with three axles and offered with two different lengths: 14.35 meters and 14.75 meters. Apart from this version delivered to Dublin Coaches, Ayats has also adapted the Horizon aesthetics to its Intercity model line-up. Th is model, which offers high versatility, can be homologated in Class I, Class II or Class III, allowing the client/operator to drive with standing passengers or not, according to their needs. It can be specified in three different lengths: 11.55 meters in two axles or 13.35, 14.35 and 14.75 meters in three axles. Th is Intercity variant is a high-

Event parking – taking the hard stand

A

ll through the recent election campaign the issue of the environment was a central plank in the policies and manifestoes of the political parties seeking a majority in the Dail. While the Green Party claimed ownership of environmental issues, all candidates and parties realise that environmental protection and policies that support sustainability are things that the electorate want.

As we all know policies and aspirations are one thing, but bringing change into action and enforcing it will be difficult. As the various permutations and negotiations between the different parties and independents continue, how will environmental policies take shape? A central pillar in improving sustainability is encouraging people to use public transport and presumably travel by bus where possible. However there is a problem that is becoming more and more an issue for drivers and operators, namely parking. All very well for people to try and save the environment by taking the bus to an event, be it a concert or football match. Where does the driver park that is safe for passengers gett ing on and off the bus and walking the last piece of the journey? Some years ago the Coach Tourism & Transport Council (CTTC) launched a parking initiative in conjunction with some of the larger towns in Ireland. So far Ennis, Dungarvan and Sligo have joined the scheme and more are in the pipeline. Let’s go back to the parking problems associated with large events. The planning permission is a critical factor for these big gatherings. Remember the Garth Brooks concert in Croke Park a few years ago? Residents were able to have the series of performances cancelled because some of the criteria was not fulfi lled. All very interesting but could a coach operator force a promoter or sporting organisation to cancel an event because

there were no facilities to allow them undertake their duties safely or places where the driver could take a break? In the new green economy, will people transferring from the comfort of their cars to a bus be happy to be thrown off that bus in the vicinity of Croke Park and be told by the driver to “keep an eye out for me, I’ll be around somewhere” after the event? I don’t think so. Of course the driver has a problem too, as he or she is forced to drive around burning diesel and wasting valuable driving time, not very eco-friendly. Sometimes the operator and driver are on the front line when it comes to complaints from the general public or being recipients of a bit of low level harassment. I was at an event last year where about ten coaches turned up with very limited parking. They were all forced to park on footpaths and service bus stops in the area, which was not ideal. Then, as the locals started to arrive home, residents appeared and insisted that the buses be moved. There were some unsavoury exchanges between some of the drivers and the residents, which led to the arrival of a Garda car. What defused the situation was that the event ended and the buses were ready to leave. What I found interesting was that the event organiser involved contacted the local coach operator to inform him that coaches could not park in the area when the event was going on. So, it was ok for the organisers to collect the admission fees but not see any need to discuss the parking problem that would arise outside. If we are going to green the planet and expect people to swop the luxury of their cars for the bus, then you have to make it some way convenient for them when they get there. Operators and drivers are entitled to the same courtesy for different reasons and should not be forced to have to take their chances driving around looking for places to try and park.
