Bus drivers put road safety first

H

appy, satisfied passengers are the best thing about the job. The handling and performance of the bus and the driver’s working environment mean a lot. But the most important thing of all for the drivers of coaches and longdistance buses is a high level of road safety.

Th is was the result of a new survey by Volvo Buses which involved asking 1,000 coach and bus drivers from 34 European countries about their work.

“Our customers’ ability to recruit efficient and capable drivers is a key factor in the success of their businesses. Confident, competent drivers drive safely and economically and give passengers a positive experience. For this reason, drivers’ opinions play an incredibly important role in our ongoing development of the products and services that help to make their work easier. The survey we have just carried out is one of the tools we use to gain an up-to-date understanding of how they regard their situation,” stated Niklas Orre, VP Retail Segment at Volvo Buses.

consideration of all is which bus you get to drive, according to 67 percent of the drivers who were surveyed. When they were asked about different characteristics of the vehicles, they put safety in first place, closely followed by manoeuvrability and visibility.

Judging by their responses, most coach drivers really enjoy their work. As many as 85 percent of them would recommend their job to other people. A total of 44 percent think that satisfied passengers are the best thing about the job, while 29 percent put the driving itself in fi rst place.

The answers to the question of which factors play the greatest role in their choice of employer show that working hours, geographical working area, managers, colleagues and training opportunities are all very important. But the most important

The passengers also seem to be generally satisfied with the drivers’ performance.

A total of 63 percent of drivers said that they rarely or never came across angry or rude passengers. On the contrary, passengers often show their appreciation of drivers. Nine out of ten had been given a spontaneous round of applause by passengers and around 30 percent said that this happened frequently.

Wrightbus gains substantial orders in Asia & Ireland are also Wrightbus bodywork with Volvo chassis combination. Th is brings the total number of bus bodywork orders won by the company in Hong Kong in the last two years to 484 units.

Both orders will be manufactured at the new Wrightbus campus in Gracehill, Ballymena, the site formerly owned by Japan Tobacco International (JTI). The buses for KMB will be among the fi rst to be produced and delivered from the remodelled facility.

fter a period of restructuring, Wrightbus, the Ballymena based bus manufacturer, has secured two valuable orders from its loyal customers in Hong Kong. Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) has ordered 150 units and its sister company, LongWin Bus, is taking a further 10, all of which are double-decker vehicles with Wrightbus bodywork and Volvo chassis. Hot on the heels of this success, the company has also received an order for 7 buses from New World First Bus (NWFB) and 46 for its sister company City Bus Ltd. These vehicles

Wrightbus wins TII Order Meanwhile, Wrightbus has received a major fleet order of 88 StreetLite single deck buses from Transport Infrastructure

Ireland (TII), presented in the new livery for vehicles operating in the National Transport Authority’s Transport for Ireland branded bus services.

Built with the ‘door forward’ layout, the vehicles have an overall length of 10.2m with a width of 2.48m.

Featuring Wrightbus’ Micro Hybrid system version 2, the StreetLite buses are fitted with a Daimler OM934 Euro 6, engine with a power rating of 208hp and a Voith D824 gearbox.

Passenger capacity options are 32 seated and 43 standing or 31 seated with 44 standees and all seats are fitted with integrated USB ports.

Additional passenger benefits include WiFi system, LED passenger information displays mounted at the front side and the rear of the vehicle and LED interior saloon lighting.

Ford’s Chariot ride-sharing commuter shuttle service expands

F

ollowing initial successful trials, Ford’s Chariot ride-sharing shuttle service which is tailored for companies and campuses, has been launched into Europe for the first time - promising easier, less stressful commutes.

Chariot, which began operating in London earlier this year, is a ridesharing minibus service that connects commuters living and working in areas underserved by public transport with nearby transit hubs.

Now, Chariot is expanding its focus to serve companies and out-oftown campuses where access by public transport can be difficult. By cutting the reliance on cars to get to work, Chariot reduces the number of vehicles on the road to improve commutes for everyone.

Employers based in locations with less convenient public transport face challenges attracting and retaining the best talent, while on average, taking everything into account, it costs £30,000 to replace an employee who leaves. Furthermore, staff who work for firms that minimise the stress and expense of their commute find their companies to be more attractive places to work.

“Companies know that a good daily commute can make a real difference to their employees’ quality of life – and the quality of their work,” said Sarah-Jayne Williams, Ford’s Director for Smart Mobility in Europe.

“With Chariot we’re providing a comfortable, modern and efficient transport service that we think will benefit staff, their employers and – by helping to reduce traffic – the city around them.”

The first new Chariot route is a collaboration between Chariot and award-winning sustainable transport group, easitNETWORK. The service is available for commuters travelling between Stockley Park – near to Heathrow Airport on the outskirts of west London – and Hayes & Harlington Station, a major transport hub served by TfL Rail, National Rail and, from next year, the new Elizabeth Line. One of Europe’s premier business parks, the 150-acre Stockley Park campus accommodates more than 7,500 employees from a variety of major businesses including IBM, Apple and BP. As well as cutting journey times with dedicated, direct services for people working at the Stockley Park campus, Chariot offers a smartphone app that lets bus users book a seat and track their vehicle’s progress in real time.

The fuel-efficient 14-seat Ford Transit minibuses feature spacious, airconditioned interiors, enabling passengers to travel and work in comfort.

Furey’s Coaches makes a return trip to Volvo for 9700

leet Bus & Coach Award winning Furey’s Coaches (Sligo) has put into operation a new fully integrated Volvo B11R 9700. The new addition to the fleet follows on from a B11R Jonckheere JHV2 delivered last year and a further Volvo 9700 in 2016. The new B11R 9700 is 12.3m in length and has passenger capacity of 51 seats.

“We needed a new coach for our fleet to work on our increasingly busy tour programme in Ireland. Our previous experience of Volvo quality, operational costs and reliable support network meant we had no hesitation in selecting Volvo once again and this time we decided to switch to the fully integrated B11R 9700 which we have seen and heard such great things about,” explained Aiden Furey, Director of Furey’s Coaches.

Slight increase in demand for new buses and coaches across EU

N

ew registration figures released

by ACEA from January to September 2018, reveal that demand for new medium and heavy buses and coaches over 3.5 tonnes across the European Union (EU) increased only slightly compared to one year ago (+0.9%), largely sustained by the excellent performance of the new EU Member States (+15.5%) and Ireland (47.9%).

The European body representing vehicle manufacturers report stated that new registrations increased significantly in both Italy (+35.6%) and France (+8.2%), but the market contracted in the UK (-12.4%), Germany (-3.9%) and Spain (-3.5%). Strong sales in Lithuania (+55.8%) and Czech Republic (64.2%) significantly propped up the registrations table along with Greece (32.2%), Croatia (27.6%) and Poland (20.5%).

Over the fi rst three quarters of 2018, growth remained positive across Europe.

To date in 2018 demand increased by 3.6%, with 1.8 million commercial vehicles registered.

BYD enter German electric coach trial

O

ne of the world’s first pure electric long distance coach trials is underway in Germany - using a Chinese built BYD coach. Electric buses are becoming an increasingly familiar sight on European city streets but this is thought to be one of the first times an attempt has been made to run an emissions free, battery electric operated long distance service. The Flixbus route of almost 100km between Frankfurt and Mannheim via Frankfurt Airport and Heidelberg runs four times a day.

wo years into the introduction of the joint Volvo B11R/ Jonckheere JHV2 platform, Volvo Bus is predicting another strong sales performance next year for this premium coach combination in the UK and Ireland.

Since making its debut at Euro Bus Expo in late 2016, more than 100 Volvo B11R/JHV2s have entered service to date. A distinctive and increasingly familiar sight on roads, the new model has continued the success of the Volvo/ Jonckheere partnership, further adding to the approximately 2,000 vehicles sold since 1993. With sales of the high specification coach set to continue on an upward trend, Volvo Bus has confi rmed that it will be placing an order for at least 50 units for the 2019 season, as production of the bodywork

ith Glider services and the new off board ticketing system now in place, Translink is reminding customers to make sure they have their ticket and have tapped before they Glide.

David Curry, Translink General Manager Bus explained: “We have been pleased to see how quickly passengers have got used to the new off board ticketing system and we now have implemented a penalty fare scheme for anyone found travelling without a valid ticket.”

Bus Euro Test 2018 Zagreb, Croatia

A

t the start of the Summer, members of the International Bus & Coach of the Year Jury (IBOY) gathered at Zagreb, the Croatian capital over four days to undertake the assessment and election process for the 2019 IBOY. For this biennial event, sponsored by ZF, Busworld, Goodyear and ZET, Zagreb’s public transport company, there were three buses in contention, all different in size and appearance, but with one common denominator, they were all public transport vehicles.

The Heuliez GX Elec, Irizar ie-Tram and the Mercedes-Benz Citaro Hybrid were all public service vehicles which were launched the previous Autumn at the Busworld Show in Kortrijk, Belgium.

Over the judging period, all three buses were extensively road tested on a normal bus route throughout the city of Zagreb. In addition some technical investigations were carried out in the safety of a closed circuit, such as brake performance and accelerating times.

Noise levels were also measured.

The Contenders Heuliez GX337 Lithium Elec

O

ne of the issues when trying to compare one bus to another is allowing for the possibility that a different model of the bus being judging could have a different influence over another.

In the case of the fully electric Heuliez GX, the interior was bright and fitted with three doors which allows for fast loading at bus stops. An essential requirement now on all buses are charging points, of which there are many on this one. In the interior of the bus there are few or no clutter areas and the grab rails are well spaced and visible. Low windows, in other words glass panels below knee level add to the overall brightness within the vehicle. As the rear of the bus floor is raised, almost theatre style, the overall view for passengers in that

section is enhanced. There were no ratt les or seat noise and the said seats were very comfortable. Seating capacity varies from market to market, but in France it is allowed for 83 passengers, 24 seated. Interestingly there are some countries where 114 are facilitated on board.

Driving an electric vehicle is something that takes a litt le bit of gett ing used to. For sure most rear mounted engined vehicles are almost as quiet, but the surge of acceleration felt by the driver is different. Electric power is more spontaneous and the reaction from the accelerator to the take-off is generally more dramatic. With the electric motor, the whine from it is noticeable, and this is something passengers will get used to.

There are no major blind spots on the

Heuliez, but the view from the left side mirror could be improved. Plenty of adjustment options with the seat positions and steering column ensures that the driver can see all the controls. There were some negative comments about the steering feel among the adjudication panel, but to me, it seemed fine.

The GX337 was a litt le slack from a driver storage point of view however, though one of the team commented this was due to the particular requirement for this model.

In terms of the electric drivetrain, it is fitted with a 120kWh central motor and lithiumion NMC 360kWh cell batteries. Without the air conditioning, the range distance is 300km. Price as tested was â‚Ź550,000.

Irizar ie-Tram

I

rizar is a relatively newcomer to the citybus and e-bus market, but has made up lost ground quickly.

To date, the Spanish brand has enjoyed success with its standard electric citybus in its home market principally and now in other parts of Europe. ‘Wow’, is the best word on how we described the new ie-Tram. Inside the Tram, as it is referred to, is bright, futuristic looking and very solid. Clever design has created a generous feeling of space, especially surrounding the door areas. There are numerous grab handles throughout and all around vision is excellent. A modular designed seat practically eliminates maintenance, and while they may appear uncomfortable, they certainly are not.

Driving the new vehicle was a little challenging at the start, on two fronts namely the articulation and the replacement of the mirrors with monitors. Having driven full length artics and multi-axle coaches,

one would imagine that driving what we used to call a bendy-bus would not be that difficult. However, it did take a litt le time to gain confidence with this configeration.

Notably, the monitors as distinct from the mirrors make it easier. On a separate note, I think one of the fi rst major redesigns on trucks, buses and vans will be the elimination of exterior mirrors. Th is Irizar ie-Tram was the fi rst time I had seen them in action but since then I have driven three or four vehicles fitted with monitors instead of mirrors and I fi rmly believe that drivers will instantly take to the concept. The pressure will now be on operators to retrofit them.

Meanwhile, back to the Irizar. If one has any doubt about its presence on the Main Street, just look at the public reaction as it passes by. At 18.73m long, it can accommodate 155 passengers, 39 seated and facilitate 2 wheelchairs. Irizar manufactures all of its own components including the battery pack. It has a 230kW motor and lithium-

ion batteries.

Irizar has invested significantly in a new electric production facility. According to the company, an operator cannot just buy an electric bus or tram, the route must be electrified fi rst before deciding what bus to put into service, depending on the local requirement. At a cost of â‚Ź800,000 per unit, the market will be limited, but it does have a big future in Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) applications. One thing Irizar was quick to point out is that the battery life is similar to that of the Tram itself, all of these calculations must be taken into account before a potential customer would pass judgement on the up-front price.

For sure, the Irizar ie-Tram is the platform that will be used for many different applications, as the quality and comfort levels are right and its overall design will see it into the next decade.

Mercedes-Benz Citaro Hybrid

A

lthough the Citaro is a product that has been very familiar to all of us in the industry and with the general public for many years now, the bus presented in Zagreb was different from anything we had seen before. Due to parent company Daimler’s philosophy Mercedes-Benz has been slow to take the ‘electric route’, often claiming that it would prefer to be the best, rather than the fi rst.

Whatever about being the best they were certainly not the fi rst.

By comparison to the other two vehicles in contention for the big prize, the Citaro diesel-electric Hybrid is obviously much noisier and it does look similar to all other Citaro variants within the range. Engine wise nothing has changed, it is still the OM936h 7.7 litre, which is also available with a Natural Gas (CNG) alternative.

A noticeable difference compared to the standard diesel version is the potential fuel reductions of up to 8%. And another interesting point about this Hybrid Citaro is that it performed best in the acceleration, braking and noise level tests, all carried out under strict scrutiny.

Mercedes-Benz engineers stated that the company is in the development process to full electric but that in the meantime, this bus offers a competitively priced and economically real alternative, with no specific driver training requirement. There are some additional features to existing models, as it can carry 101 passengers and wheelchair, and features a new intelligent steering system. Total Cost of Ownership has been reduced by 2.5%, mainly due to the drivetrain enhancements such as the new lighter ZF EcoLite automated transmission

and an updated ZF rear axle.

In conclusion, Mercedes-Benz’ sales team promoted the fact that this bus is not an interim solution until full electric reaches its peak, but that is a product in its own right, Mercedes-Benz will deliver 500 units this year, at a cost of €270,000.

At the IAA Commercial Vehicle Exhibition in Hannover, the Mercedes-Benz Citaro Light Hybrid was announced winner of the International Bus of the Year 2019 Award.

The victorious Mercedes-Benz Citaro Hybrid was highly recommended by the judges for its light hybrid system suitable for sustainable use within city limits and for urban public transport. Its hybrid system helps the Euro 6 diesel engine in an intelligent way to reduce fuel usage and CO2 emissions.

Euro Bus Expo 2018 – NEC, Birmingham, UK.

T

here were mixed comments from attendees at the biennial Euro Bus Expo in Birmingham at the end of October, some felt it was quiet and others considered it was very well presented. In general, there was a good display of machinery and equipment, in other words public service vehicles that we are likely to see on the road next year.

During all of the presentations there was one word missing throughout – ‘Brexit’. The various bus and coach brand presenters talked about challenges facing the industry and the need for caution without actually mentioning the “B” word. Good for them, as the industry is on a positive footing as suppliers and operators face the future, thankfully in positive terms. While it is true to say that in private conversations, the “B” word did crop up and people are genuinely concerned about it, collectively, they are gett ing on with it, regardless. PSV companies must plan insofar as they can for it, but they must also continue to trade. While the need for a move towards a cleaner environment and the requirement to remove diesel from

public transport was the foundation of most presentations during the Show, the more subtle comments were about enticing more people to use public transport. Fleet Bus & Coach was at the NEC to capture the flavour of the event. Here’s an A-Z of the highlights.

Harris Group/Higer

Celebrating 150 years in the trade is Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) which produced 2,600 vehicles last year. The Falkirk, Scotland headquartered bus builder boasts having 70% of the London market and has numerous double-decker in service in many cities around the world. Recently, a major order from the city of Berlin was secured. It is regarded as significant because it may be the start of the Double-deckers boom, becoming a feature of European public transport. In Ireland, the ADL Plaxton model continues to be popular with operators.

BYD Chinese company BYD (Build Your Dreams) has formed a strategic alliance with ADL. Mr. Isbrand Ho, BYD’s European Managing Director for the brand stated that between both companies there are 200 electric buses in service in the UK, including 33 doubledeckers in London alone. Mr. Ho said that the company was very excited about a field-test FLEETBUS&COACH | Winter 2018

Accompanied by its two Irish main dealers, Midland Bus & Coach sales, (Liam Farrelly) and Lir Bus & Coach Sales, (Martin Daly), the long established Spanish coachbuilder UNVI had a full range of models on display.

All versions were available on Iveco Bus and Mercedes-Benz chassis. A viable alternative fuel source for operators is Natural Gas and Iveco Bus is now offering Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) across its Daily Blue Power and chassis/cab ranges.

Irish bus and coach converters and distributors were present at the NEC in full strength, with Brian Noone Ltd (Maynooth) exhibiting fine examples, with a total of eight coaches across its stand. Noone’s announced Midland Bus & Coach sales as its newly appointed UK dealer. The new DAF TURAS 900, was indeed a show stopper. Built on the DAF LF chassis, it can be supplied with 33 or 37 seats, with manual or auto ZF box.

Represented by Pelican Coaches, the new Chinese built Yuton G12 coach, that has been specified especially for the Irish & UK markets was launched. At 12.4m in length, with 53 seats and a toilet, it is fitted with a 10.8 litre PACCAR (DAF) MX-11 (450hp) Euro 6 engine coupled to a six-speed ZF auto box. Irish operators get an opportunity to view the coach in Dublin at the CTTC Coach Bus & Coach Show.

Always very popular with Irish operators is Belgian manufacturer Van Hool which displayed the EX16M launched earlier this year in RHD form. Details of an exclusive sales agreement reached between Arriva Bus & Coach were announced at the event.

Van Hool continues to be well represented in Ireland by Cronin’s of Cork. Overall sales last year were up a litt le and the Cork company is quietly confident of a further increase this year.

Scania on Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge

M

ost travellers on the newlyinaugurated Hong KongZhuhai-Macau bridge, the world’s longest sea crossing bridge, will use the buses and coaches that provide a 24-hour service, with departures every few minutes. Scania is supplying many of these buses and coaches, including 120 shutt le buses and at least 55 coaches. Operated on the bridge by the Guang Dong (HZM), a total of 120 buses built in cooperation with Chinese manufacturer Higer will be supplied over a 12-month period.

“The level of support being offered by Scania meets our aim of entrusting experts to maintain the buses,” said Zhang Guang

ast month, The Original Tour of London Managing Director, Jane Lewis, London Deputy Mayor for the Environment & Energy, Shirley Rodrigues, together with UNVI representatives and other attendees officially inaugurated in Westminster, the fi rst London full electric open top Hop-on/ Hop-off double decker bus (e.DDOT) engineered and built by the Spanish manufacturer UNVI.

Th is launch comes after the fi rst ever full electric double decker bus produced by UNVI entered into operation some months ago in Paris, performing well and meeting expectations with a very low energy consumption - under 1 kw/h per km. The reliability of this 100% electric bus concept along with the continuous efforts from UNVI and collaborative partners for a more sustainable mobility by reducing CO2 have already been recognised with the achievement of several new orders. A third European city has opted for this Zero Emissions solution, as an Amsterdam service is now in operation.

TEMSA ‘Smart Mobility’ solutions at Persontrafik Expo

67th IAA Commercial Vehicle Show 2018 - Hannover Messe, Germany

H

eld every second year in Hannover, the Internationale Automobil Ausstellung (IAA) Commercial Vehicle Show opens its doors to the latest in the world of road transport.

Spread over twelve exhibition halls, every type of commercial vehicle as well as components , attachments and ancillaries of all types is on display.

Things are evolving in the automotive industry as we see the slow demise of diesel power and more automation arriving each day. Of course, diesel will be around for a long time and so too will the need for drivers and operators to drive vehicles, but where it is practical and cost efficient to replace both, there are signs of it happening, albeit slowly but happening all the same.

While the ‘Brexit’ debate did not really get mentioned in terms of it being a significant issue for central Europeans, it did feature in comments like “we must make new arrangements to get our products to you in Ireland.” One significant thing that stood out is the awareness on the part of manufacturers about how the Irish market is changing.

Brand representatives all know who the National Transport Authority (NTA) is and its significance. A renewed interest by these manufacturers in the Irish market can only be good for operators. Fleet Bus & Coach was out in strength at the Hannover Messe to see what the different manufacturers are doing to face the new challenges and opportunities facing bus and coach operators.

BYD

automotive, materials handling and battery manufacturer arrived on this continent. He is honest and forthright when it comes to answering questions. At the 2015 Kortrijk Show Mr. Ho stated that the company expected to have a substantial share of the European city bus market within two years.

Those present were largely sceptical. They have been proven wrong. To date BYD has delivered over 500 buses in Europe, including a high-profi le order to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. By the middle of next year BYD will have delivered over two hundred buses to the UK. Concluding his presentation at the 2018 IAA, Isbrand, in an obvious reference to the Irish market, said BYD would continue to explore the other right hand drive market in Europe.

Worldwide, BYD has delivered over 35,000 electric buses.

Iveco Bus

In a timely reminder of the way the automotive motor industry in general is going, Iveco had no diesel vehicle on its stand. In a proud introduction, Pierre Lahutte, Iveco President revealed at the press conference that all the buses and coaches on stand were “available for work straightaway.” “None of what you see here are prototypes,” he said. So far Iveco has only entered the Irish market with some school buses, Daily midi-coaches and bus chassis both large and small. In the absence of diesel engines on stand, combustion engines exhibited were powered by natural gas. Electric power was promoted too.

Iveco continues to support Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) throughout its commercial vehicle range of vans, trucks buses and coaches. Natural gas delivers a reduction in

polluting emissions of over 90% for NO2, 99% for particulate matter and 10% for natural gas which rises as high as 95% with biomethane.

MAN Truck & Bus

Coming into this year’s IAA CV Show, MAN - the holder of the ‘Stand of the Year’ award from the previous show in 2016 had more exciting news. MAN has a long established presence in the Irish market, with both chassis and the Tourliner coach.

It announced that shortly, newly developed innovative products will become available in right hand drive. The TRACTON Group owned manufacturer sees itself as a “Supplier of sustainable transport solutions” for road and public transport operators. One of the services now provided to bus operators is a planning service. Th is is particularly useful to companies considering changing from diesel to electric. MAN also offers CNG versions for public transport and has always been keen to promote natural gas as a viable option. On display and set for launch at the CTTC’s Coach & Bus Show 2018 in Dublin is the new TGE van chassis which will be available as a factory bus next year.

REVIEW II | 19 For Daimler brand Mercedes-Benz, the highlight of the Show was the announcement that the Citaro Hybrid was elected as International Bus of the Year 2019. MercedesBenz has been criticised in some quarters as being slow to produce an electric bus, though company representatives always respond by saying that they want to be the best, not the fi rst. However at the IAA, Mercedes-Benz demonstrated a strong commitment to electrification by launching the e-Citaro.

It also announced that Daimler has bought in to American company Proterra, a large manufacturer of electric vehicles in the United States. New eCitaro will not be available until 2020, but interestingly Mercedes-Benz have said it will cost the same as a diesel bus over its lifetime.

The Volkswagen Truck & Bus Group parent company, comprising of MAN Truck & Bus, Scania, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in South America and RIO fleet management/telematics systems will now be known as TRATON. All brands will retain their own identities and compete with each other in the global market place.

Their joint collaboration will be in the area of Research & Development, together with alliances which have been formed with North American, Japanese and Chinese manufacturers. Th is new grouping offers the individual brands new opportunities and makes the bigger group a substantial world player. In 2017, TRATON Group’s brands sold around 205,000 vehicles in total, produced at 31 sites in 17 countries.

The company had a workforce of around 81,000 worldwide across its commercial vehicle brands at the end of 2017.

Van Hool

Scania’s CEO Henrik Henriksson stated that it is important that its customers have options when it comes to power/fuel supply, and highlighting this all the public service vehicles on its stand were available with diesel and natural gas. Henrik also claimed that the 13m Scania Interlink displayed is the fi rst long distance gas fuelled coach to be produced for the mainstream market, offering a range distance of between 1000km to 1300km. Scania also offers hybrid and electric options. In a major study, Scania recently explored several pathways towards achieving zero fossil emissions in the coming decades, ranging from full electrification to a portfolio of powertrain types. The study shows that the rapid spread of electric vehicles will require four to five times more infrastructure investment relative to the

It has the low-revving EcoRoll function as standard. Some simple design changes in the engine mountings have led to a reduction in noise and vibration levels and the service intervals on the PACCAR MX 11 & MX13 engines have been extended.

Unveiled were the new 9700 and 9900 luxury coach variants. Only the 9900 will be available in right hand drive, with its premiere coming at the CTTC Coach & Bus Show 2018. With striking design, fuel-saving aerodynamics and safety of the very highest level, the premium coach manufacturer is taking another great leap forward. Both models feature a dynamically designed exterior with crisp lines, smooth sides and rounded corners to give low air resistance.

Although still recognisable as a Volvo, the new 9900 coach is defi nitely different. The new “Z-shaped” side window line combined with the sloping theatre floor of the Volvo 9900 marks a totally new design language for coaches. Separately, Volvo has always been to the forefront of electric buses and displayed an electric hybrid and a full electric, ‘Autonomous’ articulated bus. At the moment there are over 4,000 electric Volvos in service around Europe.

Always popular with Irish operators, Belgian luxury coach manufacturer Van Hool continues to fi ne tune its bus and coach models. Having introduced the award winning EX & TX range for this season, new and improved drivetrains will be available next year. Of particular interest to operators will be the new “Lite TX”. Weighing in between 600kg to 1200kg less than the standard versions, depending on the particular model, fuel savings of up to 3%

elcome to the 2018 Coach & Bus Show here at the RDS Simmonscourt Pavilion. The tenth biennial event is the highlight of the Irish Coach and Bus sector’s calendar and promises to be a special occasion.

Th is year’s show is once again organised by the Coach Tourism & Transport Council of Ireland (CTTC) and generously sponsored

by Campion Insurance, which has been a long and loyal supporter over the years.

The 2018 event is a complete sell out, in fact, it’s twenty-five percent bigger than last time held in 2016, featuring in excess of 70 stands and spanning three halls within the Simmonscourt complex. The list of exhibitors reads like the who’s who of the road passenger transport sector and includes large manufacturers such as Van Hool, Mercedes-Benz (Daimler), Scania, UNVI, The Harris Group (Higer &AOS), Yutong, Alexander Dennis (ADL) and Volvo Bus. There will be items of interest for all visitors to the event, which will also feature a wide range of exhibits from large and small industry suppliers showcasing their unique range of products.

The RDS venue will once again feature “The Coach Driver of the Year Competition”,

which gives professional drivers an opportunity to showcase their expertise.

Contestants will compete for the Martin Guilfoyle Memorial Trophy that has been generously donated by Bernard Kavanagh & Sons Ltd in honour of their late and widely respected colleague and the competition is sponsored by Mercedes-Benz.

The Gala Dinner, which is the social highlight of the show weekend, takes place in the Ballsbridge Hotel on the evening of Saturday 17 November, generously sponsored by Mercedes-Benz. The headline entertainment act on the night features the popular show band “Lightning Strikes”. The Show is the only one of its kind in Ireland and gives operators a chance to socialise with their peers and view the latest products and innovations in the market place. The purpose

of the show is to fund the work of the CTTC, as the voice of Ireland’s private bus and coach operators. With significant challenges ahead in the areas of PSO Tendering, unfavourable conditions for school transport providers, increased regulation and increased insurance costs, the CTTC’s work is more important than ever.

High percentage of public transport users willing to embrace full electric bus network

G

etting public support for the implementation of greener transport policies continues to divide public opinion, according to a new report, commissioned by Volvo Buses. Concerns over air quality continue to grow, with more than half those surveyed fully supporting a move to more greener transport options such as electric buses.

The research examined the public’s view on the future of urban transportation, electric buses, and air quality at a time of dangerously high pollution levels due to the hot weather. Respondents included car drivers, bus, train and taxi users, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians of all ages above the age of 16. When considering greener transport choices now and in the future, the results show that the public’s love affair with the car continues, with 47% of respondents stating it is their most often used mode of transportation, followed by bus travel, where 20% use it most often. When it comes to generational choices, 60% aged 55 and above use the car most often and 18% use the bus, compared to 28% of 16 to 24 year-olds using a car and 27% using a bus.

When asked about what their transport choice is likely to be in 15 years’ time, 61% of respondents aged 16 to 24 years old see themselves using their own car most often, compared with 40% of those aged 55 and over. Although millennials may now have access to a greater choice of transport services, such as on-demand options, the car looks set to be predominant in the short term while real alternatives such as electric buses gain traction around the world.

However, more cars mean more congestion. When it comes to the recent addition of on-demand app-based taxi services such as Uber, 44% of respondents would rather choose a bus as it is cheaper than an app-based taxi service. However, only 9% would prefer a bus for its speed of transit, highlighting the need for authorities to support the prioritisation of mass public transport for time-poor commuters.

Håkan Agnevall, President of Volvo Buses commented: “The survey indicates that cars and taxi services continue to top people’s transport of choice in urban centres. However, the more people we have travelling individually in vehicles, the more congested our streets are going to become, even if these vehicles are electric. Th is slows down journeys for all. At the same time, congestion from a growing number of non-electric cars increases the air quality hazard. We need to move people on to options such as buses, that can carry increased numbers of people around our busy streets. To do this, we need to visualise and create the bus service of the future – a new reality, which changes people’s perceptions [offering] environmentally appealing services that provide the transport solution people need.

If our bus services looked like this, then gett ing people to choose the electric bus could reduce congestion and improve air quality in our cities.”

electromobility and urban vehicle access regulations.”

According to respondents, the top five reasons, apart from fare prices, which would make them take buses more often are: • More frequent services (28%) • Routes to places they need to go (25%) • Bus stops nearer to home (22%) • Buses that can get them to their destination quicker (14%) • Cleaner bus on the inside (12%) “People often have a perception of what a bus service can be, when comparing it to, and choosing their transport options. The reality is, a quieter, electric bus network allows people to have bus stops closer to their homes and where they need to go, as with no emissions and reduced noise pollution, there are few restrictions on where they can be. At the same time, less emissions, means more buses can be on the streets, speeding up frequency and journey times,” stated Håkan.

In addition, over half of respondents agree that if bus stations were redeveloped into urban meeting points, with food outlets, bars and green public spaces, it would make bus travel even more appealing. The services have a key role to play too. 34% want WiFi and charging points on services, and a fi ft h wants dedicated bus information on an app telling them when their next service is arriving. 33% of respondents want direct travel from their location to where they want to go, similar to a taxi, while 30% say the challenge of changing a city’s infrastructure to accommodate electric buses may be a challenge for its wider adoption. Such requirements can only be resolved when the industry and transport authorities work together to increase electric buses on the streets.

Commenting on the fi ndings, Marie Carlsson, Director Business Solutions at Volvo Buses said: “As an industry working with city officials, we need to design bus services that appeal to users and meet their needs. In the future, that could mean buses as interconnected pods, possibly with a driver or not, with all those in one pod going to one destination, while another pod disconnects and goes in another direction. The size of the bus can depend on the demand; larger buses will complement small ones. Each pod holds a certain number of people. Bus stops could become citizen hubs, making them att ractive places to go for socialising and connecting with other human beings. We need to show buses to be more than just mobility services if we are to move people away from cars and reduce the air pollution in our cities.” www.fleet.ie

On the opening day of the new facility, there were 34 vehicles on site and some more in the system. Dave Porter, Retail Sales Manager, who looks after the Irish market, said that the company will soon have digital configuration tools that will make vehicle selection a lot easier, even enjoyable!

olvo Bus & Coach (UK & Ireland), based in Coventry has enjoyed a busy and successful 2018, with new products and an exciting new coach sales and customer handover facility, which has just been completed.

While Nick Page, Managing Director, Volvo Bus & Coach (UK & Ireland) is the first to admit that this year has been very challenging, he said that the company will defend its position “fiercely” in the marketplace.

New Volvo 9900 Although most people are aware of the new Volvo 9900 coach, at this stage, there is nothing like the “razzmatazz” of a new launch to generate renewed interest in the brand and ultimately sales. Using the October Euro Bus Show at the NEC, Birmingham as the premiere platform, the 9900 was introduced into the UK market this month, and is making its Irish debut here at the CTTC Coach & Bus Show.

Based on the well-established and proven Volvo B11R chassis, the 9900 will be specified in both 13.1m & 13.9m lengths, with either 53 or 57 seats and a demountable toilet. After the Show in Birmingham Nick Page said they had 11 fi rm orders for 2019 secured and expect to conclude a few more deals in the short to medium term.

Volvo Bus partners with MCV

Volvo Bus is close to its customers and from word on the street, a slowdown is on the horizon. That lull is the uncertainty of Brexit.

As its customers are currently busy, the present situation belies the fact that there is a pending downturn, according to Nick, it’s just that everyone is experiencing uncertainty; “Th is has made everybody from the big groups to the tour operators and the family run business putt ing off making buying decisions for at least a year,” stated Nick.

But it’s not all doom and gloom in his eyes; “Like every cloud, there is a silver lining, the parts business has seen an improvement, so that is an encouragement.”

Earlier this year Håkan Agnevall, President, Volvo Buses, said that the company sees a very bright future for Volvo in the Citybus market and also said that at the end of the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover, the Swedish brand had fi rm orders for 150 units of its new 9700 and 9900 coach ranges.

New Centre at Coventry Following an investment of £1.4 million, Volvo Bus & Coach Sales Centre is now open for business. Commenting on the year long project which has come to fruition, James Hyde, Retail Sales Director said: “It’s four times larger than the previous facility and we can now offer our customers to come visit and help design and decide on what their new coach will look like. Then later they can come and pick it up in surroundings similar to that of a car show room. Of course, used vehicles customers are also welcome here also, we always have a stock of quality vehicles available here, ready to sell.”

A surprise announcement for those attending the Euro Bus Show was that the Project 523 Concept will be built in partnership with Egyptian company MCV. Speaking at the announcement, James Hyde said; “There is a growing demand for a competitively priced fi xed spec coach and we feel the combination of the Volvo B11R with MCV bodywork will be competitive in this market.”

For most manufacturers maintaining the correct level of pre-owned stock is a delicate balance between enough choice for customers and not too much as that will have the fi nance department putt ing the FLEETBUS&COACH | Winter 2018

People actually travel in buses!

ometimes I wonder if some of the powers-that-be realise there are actual people in the buses and coaches that travel throughout the country. I know the National Transport Authority (NTA) is doing a lot of work in terms of improving service for passengers and has some very significant plans for the future, but sometimes changing routes or adding routes can seem more cumbersome than is necessary.

When the airlines see a change, either a reduction in people traveling or a requirement for a new service, they react quickly. It should be the same with bus services with operators being allowed to move where they see an opportunity to provide such services. Of course the NTA has a role to play, but is using valuable fi nancial assets to purchase buses and then do everything but operate them such a clever idea? I’m not convinced.

There is a story that I recall from many years ago where a coach operator decided to run a service to connect with the train. Driving the coach himself, he always arrived ahead of the train which regularly ran a litt le late. It irritated him that occasionally the Station Master would tell him that he was operating illegally, but that he would turn a blind eye! One morning the train did not turn up, having broke down en route. As a courtesy to his passengers the coach operator carried on to the fi nal destination. The passengers got there more quickly, it was also cheaper and the journey was more pleasant.

As a result of this the operator saw a new market and was now a competitor to the train. The passengers voted with their feet and changed to the bus for a variety of reasons.

A similar situation arose in the late 1970s. A booming economy saw a huge influx of people coming to work in Dublin. Travelling by bus and train was expensive and generally cumbersome for these early commuters. The private operators identified a gap in the market and started offering a range of weekend services linking the Capital with the provinces. Many are still in place today and are the foundations of some of the most successful operators in Ireland.

Ironically, at the time CIE, the Department of Transport and a section of the Gardaí as the Carriage Office spent weekends following private coaches to the four corners of the country in attempts to prosecute them for operating illegal services. Eventually someone in the State sector realised there was a market here and we saw the arrival of the very successful brand we now know as ‘EXPRESSWAY’.

What these two stories prove is that the State was slow to recognise the passenger in the bus. At the time there were arguments against private coaches along the lines of “will the private operator bring my mother in for her pension?” Of course when the mechanism was put in place they did.

The NTA and the State have an obligation to protect routes that are not viable and that should be their focus. Operators, public and private know the routes and where useful service can be provided.

Putt ing a service in place is simple as obviously it is a lot easier and more efficient to join two towns with a bus service than to build a road between them. However one sometimes get the impression that when such routes are proposed it would be easier to put a railway line down. The beauty of a bus link is that if it does not work you can change or modify it.

Finally commuters are not the only people in buses that are a litt le invisible to the Authorities. The challenge of fi nding places to park tour coaches in towns and at att ractions is gett ing worse. For those lucky enough that their town or tourist attraction is popular, then they have an obligation to make sure there is suitable parking. It is unfortunate that all too often it is left to drivers and operators to try to find corners to squeeze coaches into while people visit an attraction.

It is time for better consultation with relevant parties before decisions that make coach parking more difficult are made.

We have a beautiful country and thankfully people from at home and abroad want to explore it. Coach operations and parking are part of the infrastructure that service it - let us not forget that.
