EU Trailer registrations at third highest level ever in 2017

A

s figures reveal that 77% of all goods in Europe are moved by road, with the majority of loads transported in a trailer, new trailer registrations in 2017 reached over 190,000 units in Western Europe, according to figures released by industry sector consultants CLEAR International. Th is is the third highest level of demand ever recorded for new trailers in the West European Trailer Market - surpassed only in 2007 and 2008, just before the 2009 economic crash. In 2017, the demand for trailers increased in the first half of the year by 5.7% but only by 2.5% in the second half. Overall however, 2017 saw a 4.2% increase in registrations. Since mid-2017 there has been a distinct improvement in the outlook for most, if not all, West European economies. As a

consequence, the forecast of a slowdown in demand for trailers in the region during 2018 has moderated again, but it has not disappeared. Instead of demand dropping by approximately 9% in 2018 a decline in demand of 4% is now forecast, followed by a further drop in 2019 leading to a total shrinking of the market by 12% over the two years, according to Gary Beecroft, CLEAR International: “The catch up demand that has been pushing the market is now over. The trailer parc is fully replenished despite the fact that road transport demand has yet to return to 2006 levels. Furthermore it is nine years since the decimation of the trailer market in 2009 and the market has never gone ten years without a slowdown. All these factors point to a fall in demand for new trailers. Fortunately for the industry, the

fall will be relatively modest and shortlived.” Gary mentioned that the UK market is currently receding from the heady level of trailer demand seen in 2015/16, and as a result will have the unique distinction of shrinking every year from 2016 to 2019. Despite this trend, the UK trailer demand will fall below 20,000 trailers only in 2019, which is still above the typical level of the market before the recession. “Add in the Brexit effect,” concluded Gary, “which has already dropped the UK average investment growth forecast below 1% for the 2016-18 period, this will result in uncertainty and low business confidence during the run up to the UK leaving the EU in 2019. However, when (if) the Brexit terms have been sett led there will be a resumption of trailer market growth.”

KC Commercials open new Tank Test Centre

A

nyone engaged in the transport of dangerous goods (ADR) in tanks would be well aware of the implications of EU Legislation SI 5 2017 which came into force last July. For those not familiar with the Regulation, SI 5 removes a provision allowing the certification of tank-vehicles by a competent person and replaces it with - “the requirement for such tank-vehicles to instead be inspected and tested to ADR standards by an appointed inspection body.” To mark the opening of its new approved test centre, Tank test specialists KC Commercials (Dublin), held an open day for customers and guests to view the impressive new facility, and meet with the staff.

The purpose built two-bay test unit at Posie Row, Kinsealy, just off the Malahide Road includes all manner of equipment to quickly and safely certify the periodic testing of ADR tanks. The highly technical test process is carried out in association with Tank Safe Solutions which operates a similar facility in Belfast. While the test centre has a number of special features including vapour recovery, and fully remote control, arguably the most important is that KC Commercials is approved to conduct

pressure tests using Dry Air, which eliminates the need to ‘dry out’ the tank after testing, as Dry Air leaves no residue in the tank - unlike a standard water test. Th is of course delivers a significant time saving with tests being completed within about half a day where previously it could run to two days. Tank testing and internal inspections are monitored using the latest camera technology via the remotely located control office. KC will also manage a full historic record of test results which are logged and readily available for inspection. Paul White

Many suppliers benefit from Hireco’s biggest order

O

ver the past five years, Hireco has consistently been one of the UK and Ireland’s largest buyers of new fleet trailers. Replenishing its fleet annually, Hireco’s demand for new trailers has increased year-on-year, and in early 2018 it placed its largest order to date; 1,265 trailers in all. To meet the specific needs of its customers which operate across a wide range of commercial areas, and to anticipate future market requirements, Hireco has strategic partners for every vehicle type, chosen for their proven expertise in their respective fields.

Into this frame steps BPW which supplies its axle and suspension systems with ECO Plus 3 drum brakes on all of the units specified. Among the trailer manufacturers contracted is SDC, which will be taking responsibility for a mixture of 650 curtainsiders and box vans, while Dennison Trailers will be building 265 flat skeleton trailers. Lawrence David is providing 200 pillar-less trailers, and a further 100 are being provided by Tiger Trailers. To complete this order, Gray & Adams, specialists in temperature controlled trailers, will be producing 50 refrigerated trailers.

These new trailers also come equipped with the latest technology, such as BPW’s telematics systems. Already installed on 200 trailers, Hireco TL Ltd M.D., James Smith, stated that: “The latest tech really does give customers the ability to improve their asset utilisation, and it also improves uptime. As maintenance providers, we can tap into the trailer and understand upcoming issues before they arise. It is a very pro-active system.” Although this is its largest trailer order to date, Hireco has plans for further expansion and aims to increase the fleet size from 5,000 up to 8,000 assets within the next five years.

Krone brings increased operational efficiencies at Ray Moran International Transport

W

exford-based groupage and pharma transport specialist, Ray Moran International Transport, has achieved operational efficiencies with easier loading and additional capacity since adding a further 10 Krone trailers to its fleet. Now in its 20th year, Ray Moran, incorporating Moran & Boxwell International, runs a trans-continental haulage operation via all major Irish and UK sea ports throughout Europe, including Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, France and Spain.

“We started with one Krone trailer to see how things were and soon realised that the combination of build quality and loading flexibility were good reasons to add some more. Accordingly, we

Each of the Krone trailers is built to European Code XL (en12642xl) standard which, according to Ray, is an important quality badge for their customers throughout the continent.

One-to-One With Steven Cartwright, Joint Managing Director at Tiger Trailers JS. Four years on, the progress at Tiger Trailers has been impressive. Looking back, you must be satisfied? SC. To date, we have 4,000 trailers and truck bodies delivered to customers across the UK and into Europe and yes, we are delighted with the way the company has grown. To get ourselves established as a key player in just four years is incredible really. We are still working with customers with whom we had a previous working relationship, as well as lots of new companies who have been att racted to the Tiger brand. JS. Looking forward, there are plans to construct a new factory and expand into new markets – what’s in the pipeline? SC. Obviously, the focus for this year is building the new factory, which will open in 2019. Work begins in May and is scheduled for completion in December. Th is is a really exciting time for us, as it means we’ll have access to a purpose-built, brand new factory that will help facilitate our future growth. We are also looking at a number of new product ranges - an example of which is our recently launched Tiger Deck loading pod, which is designed for loading and unloading both single and fi xed double deck trailers. JS. Some high-profile customers are on your books, have these deals helped to generate a higher profile, and additional sales? SC. Absolutely, the more you build, the more customers you generate. We were delighted that we were able to bring some of our existing relationships with some big companies to Tiger – customers like Downtons, for example. However, the products obviously needed to be right, so the combination of our new ideas and the knowledge we have of the industry has worked really well.

double deck has helped the company gain more than 20 percent load capacity per trailer. JS. Striking livery is so important, is this done in-house and co-designed by your graphic designers and the client? SC. Yes, we develop the livery in-house, working with the client on layout and design and then we produce both 2D and 3D drawings of the fi nished product. JS. When it comes to components and auxiliaries, it seems that you have supply contracts with all the top brands in the business? SC. Yes, we work with the major component suppliers in the industry, such as BPW, SAF/HOLLAND, Daimler Chrysler for the axles, and Aspoeck, Trucklite, Wabco and Knorr Bremse for the brakes and electrics. JS. Having achieved sales success in the UK and mainland Europe, what are your plans for a presence in the Irish market? SC. We plan to keep expanding the product range and the markets in which we compete. We have had quite a lot of interest recently from a number of Irish operators, which is fantastic, and as we start supplying more and more trailers into the market the brand will only grow. One of our USPs is the fact we build our trailers using a hot-dipped galvanised chassis, which means we can offer an eight-year anti-corrosion warranty – this is a popular choice for transport operators in the UK and Ireland that operate in challenging environments, including regular ferry crossings. We look forward to building more for the Irish market. JS. Finally, what will we see from Tiger Trailers at the CV Show 2018? SC. We will have an all-new moving deck double-deck trailer on our stand at the NEC that features a three-quarter length moving deck. There will also be plenty of information on our full product range and an introductory video to our Tiger Deck loading solution.

JS. Double Deck trailers are among your specialities, what are the key advantages of the Tiger product? SC. The team at Tiger has vast experience designing double deck trailers - so much so they now represent more than 30 per cent of our turnover. Stepframe, straightframe, wedge, fi xed and moving deck trailers all feature in the model range. We also have a number of unique features in our double deck lifting system, which utilises a four-ram lift . All our lift systems are designed and installed by our skilled staff at our Winsford base. There are literally hundreds of trailers running in the UK and Europe with our lift system, for example AO.com which has renewed its entire fleet with our innovative Tiger wedge trailer. steel and alloy body aggregate tipper trailers with a full range of options on cover systems and weigher systems, and all at competitive tare weights from 32 cubic yards (25m3) up to 50 cubic yards (38m3). Tare weights from 7,700Kgs makes this a very competitive alternative to a steel body tipper of the equivalent capacity,” explained Brendan.

“C

hanging market forces, ever evolving customer needs, new industry standards, and modern perspectives on how and why, call it what you want. ‘Change is constant’. We don’t know who said it, but it’s true,” began Brendan McIlvanna, Managing Director, the bmi group, who presented an interesting insight into the company’s challenges and its strategy to meet these challenges in an interview with Fleet Trailer & BodyBuilder.

was and still is the industry benchmark all-steel waste ejector by bmi. This flagship product now works across the Irish, UK, European, African and Middle Eastern markets in the harshest of environments. Proven design, strength and reliability confi rms bmi’s position at the top of this sector. In the period since 2001, bmi has produced over 800 of these trailers, ranging in size from 90 cubic yards capacity (70m3) up to 125 cubic yards (96m3).

Let’s start with the Trailer Innovation Award-winning rockpusher ejector, spawned from the 18 years of success that

“Th is new generation of ejector is more suited to the aggregates, quarrying, sludge, and construction or demolition sectors so it is smaller. Made from SSAB HARDOX high carbon steel with SSAB DOMEX steel chassis for strength and weight saving, this robust litt le trailer borrows the same hydraulic DNA from its forbearers and certainly compliments our range of aggregate tippers in the field. The benefit of horizontal discharging of bulk loads makes this a much safer way of off-loading materials with better control and stability. bmi also offers a range of

“New designs, new materials, new processes, new standards, new technologies, Ideas are applied, good ones and some bad ones too, but these are the tools we employ to arrive at the answers. Why? Because we want to keep reaching out to improve our products, our process, our environment, our service to our customers and markets.”

Closely related to that, the aggregate moving floor trailer has been a great success across the UK and certainly revolutionised how the big aggregate companies operate now. It brings added safety, stability and high productivity to general haulage of aggregates, and more especially, delivery of asphalt for road laying. It provides horizontal discharge with no overhead issues with power lines, bridges tunnels, or trees, delivering the goods fast and efficiently in a safe and modern metered fashion.

Th is trailer type certainly competes well with the conventional thinking of multiaxle tipper trucks, with up to 30-tonnes payload in one delivery. This model ranges from 40 cubic yards (30m3) up to 50 cubic yards (38m3) and offers a range of moving floor systems, covers and weigher systems as standard options. The fully insulated version allows loads to be delivered over longer distances and still deliver at the required temperature for spreading.

Now well established as a manufacturer of high volume moving floors, bmi competes directly with the ‘big brands’ of European moving floor manufacturers, not only here in Ireland and the UK but also in their own back yards across Europe. Its range covers

all requirements from the European 117 cubic yard (90m3) size up to 145 cubic yard (110m3) with tare weights starting at 7490kg. Recent orders for the British Department of Transport’s national trial on 14.6m and 15.65m extended full length trailers bring new capacity options and new solutions to some users.

“An impressive range of steel and aluminium constructed moving floors that is possibly the widest and most comprehensive offered by any European manufacturer. MetalMover has proven so popular and reliable that we are in danger of killing off the beautifully crafted HardBox big volume scrap tipper trailer even before it gets to its teens. It’s a choice we offer our customers, knowing that one shoe does not fit all. HardBox comes with impressive tare weights in the range, from 9780kg for a 75 cubic yard (58m3) capacity up to 9950kg for the larger 90 cubic yard (70m3) with an all steel SSAB HARDOX 450 grade body structure,” Brendan added.

and all other waste materials. Using high impact floor systems, this robust design really is proving popular within the metal recovery sector right across Europe, and offers a real safe and smart looking alternative to conventional scrap tipper trailers.

“Designing innovative new trailer products on 3D CAD design soft ware is one thing but gett ing them through the full design stage to fabrication and fi nal fi nish requires that we take another leap into the future. A recent installation in the form of a fully computerised Panasonic powered welding robot has joined our staff, sourced from the leading supplier in Europe for automated welding process and products. Capable of welding steel and aluminium, this latest investment adds great value and volume to our weekly output targets, offering a higher standard with robotic consistency and efficiency, with no sick days or sleepy Mondays!” emphasised Brendan.

The MetalMover also has a full HARDOX 450 grade body structure allowing it to load and transport graded scrap metals

Not only do we design, manufacture and sell these to a demanding market place but we also offer a range of support services to our customers as well. [These include] hire short or long term, contract hire and leasing, service and repair, offered both at our head office in Dungannon, County Tyrone and at our UK Midlands centre near Birmingham. At our PitLane service centre in Birmingham and at Granville we have the capabilities to refurbish, repair and service all makes of moving floor trailers made by any manufacturer, and we offer support for all of the three major floor systems manufacturers.” The people behind all of this activity are so very important to the continual development of product and process. Training and personal development has become a key target for bmi as a company to get the best out of its people for the years to come. “We draw on a broad knowledge base with our engineering team offering a cumulative total of over 45 years trailer design experience. Our commitment to improving standards has seen us achieve ECWVTA (European Type Approval), becoming the fi rst UK and Irish based manufacturer with full approvals back in 2010. We have achieved many more standards since then including BS 8555 environments standard. Upgraded ISO 9001/2015 standard was recently audited and renewed.” “Growing a business isn’t easy with the uncertainty of trading rules in the coming years but having the best people with a strong product range, and the determination to provide great service and support to a strong customer base, we think is a good place to start,” concluded Brendan.

WE DON’T SELL TRAILERS

This seems to be an extraordinary statement for a trailer manufacturer to make - and it is. But our customers don’t choose us because of our excellent trailers. We go deeper than that. Because the best ideas are born from close cooperation. By really listening to each other, starting a proper dialogue and thereby reaching the best solutions together. Partnership may be a cliché, but if we combine our knowledge and talents with those of our customers, extremely beautiful things are created. In this way we make one another stronger and we help to fulfill each other’s ambitions. Of course to do so we also need top-quality trailers.

Golden era for Gleeson Steel & Engineering Ltd

T

he prominence of Gleeson Steel & Engineering Ltd has reached national level and beyond in recent years through its successful Gleeson Truck Bodies division. Gleeson’s excellent workmanship makes it the tipper body of choice within the construction industry at home and abroad. In line with the ethos of the parent company, Gleeson Truck Bodies is 100 percent committed to offering high spec, high quality and durable products that customers require. That philosophy began when Gleeson Steel & Engineering Ltd (GSE) was established in 1968 by the late Murt Gleeson and his wife Alice. Today, the Gortnahoe, County Tipperary headquartered company, which is one of the largest employers in the region, is run by their sons PJ and Tomas, while their mother Alice is still involved in dayto-day activities. GSE specialises in providing all types

of steel engineering solutions to both agricultural and commercial sectors. In fact, it was with the farming community that the seeds of the successful business began. Through hard work, dedication and providing a quality service, Gleeson’s has become one of the leading steel fabricators in Munster. Over the decades, the manufacturing and construction process has evolved. Alongside, Gleeson’s product range has expanded and diversified to ensure that the company continues to grow. “We have a wealth of experience in the agricultural sector. We work with our customers, from the design stage of a farm building right through to when the work is fi nished. Th is way we can ensure that the customer is happy with the product and also with the work and service that we are providing,” explained PJ Gleeson, CEO, Gleeson Steel & Engineering. As the company celebrates its Golden

50 th anniversary the customer focus remains. “Since 1968, we have built up a proud tradition of providing a wide range of durable and high quality agricultural products, backed up with an excellent after sales service. We will continue to provide our customers with a comprehensive range of quality products at competitive prices. We have fully stocked stores and we keep a full range of building and engineering supply items for the convenience of our customers,” stated PJ. Linked to the agricultural sector, the GSE subsidiary Gleeson Truck Bodies builds and supplies certified, type approved bodies and trailers for livestock transport, bale transport trailers as well as beavertail, hook-loader truck bodies and flat bed bodies for other sectors. But it is with its steel tipper bodies that Gleeson’s has made its name. “In this area, we are known throughout the country for providing a high quality product, with excellent paint fi nish,” added PJ.

“Our team of designers, fabricators and draftsmen work closely with our customers on all contracts to ensure that the projects underway are progressed and delivered on time and within budget. In addition, our workforce is highly trained and some of the workforce have been with us since the beginning and they all have played a big part in the success and growth of the company.” From its 30,000 sq ft facility, Gleeson Truck Bodies supplies and fits all types of truck bodies, serving a broad customer application base. Bolted and welded tipper bodies for rigid multi-axle trucks are its speciality, beginning from 10 tonnes GVW and beyond 32 tonnes to the newly regulated 36 tonnes (on 5 axles). From 26 to 32 tonnes Half-Pipe tippers are provided as are Block bodies. For light duty work, Gleeson’s covers from 3.5 to 7.5 tonnes GVW with small steel or aluminium tippers, flatbeds and 3-way tippers. Back in 2014, Gleeson’s launched its bolted Half-Pipe body into the marketplace, with instant interest and take-up from customers at home and in the UK. company representation on the ground and attending various trade shows around Britain. “We continue to develop our presence in the UK, exhibiting at the Tip-ex Show in Harrogate over the past two years and have also demonstrated tipper products at the big Hillhead Show, and thankfully have a growing number of repeat customers in the UK,” stated PJ. “We now have a full range of bolted bodies, suitable for 26 tonne, 32 tonne and 5-axle trucks. In addition to the standard E100 half-pipe, we offer a number of options with the bolted body: lightweight (L100), grab body (G100), insulated body (I100) and our latest design, a quarry body (Q100). In addition, we have a range of lightweight tipper bodies, comparable to an aluminium body, in fact, our lightweight grab body is lighter than any of its kind available in the market,” explained PJ. Contracts with Local Authorities around the country sees the Gleeson Truck Bodies badging on their utility trucks, while many of the top construction sector hauliers specify only Gleeson’s when ordering new trucks from their local dealers. Corrosion proofi ng for arduous construction work is paramount, according to PJ. “All our bodies are shot-blasted, primed in anti-

corrosion primer & are fi nished painted in 2 pack Crown paint. Our paint quality is one of our main features.” Alongside its investment in research and development, which is a big part of its operation, Gleeson’s is working closely with a number of European companies to design and develop truck bodies that are suitable for the Irish and UK markets. In 2014, Gleeson’s established a business relationship with Italian tipper specialists Drago Srl, based in Ostiglia, Mantova, to supply their ready-to-work bodywork for clients. “In addition to our alliance with Drago, we have developed a fully automated swap body system with another Italian company and the fi rst one is being fitted to the first customer truck at present,” added PJ. For bespoke applications, Gleeson’s can call on the expert engineering services of GSE, using its design department and sheet metal and fabrication facility with coded welders to design and manufacture any ancillary item that is required by customers. Gleeson’s golden era has arrived and the success of the past five decades has set a fi rm foundation for the next half-century.

Cartwright secures new order with Asda

C

heshire head-quartered Cartwright Group has secured its fourth substantial order from the retail giant Asda with the imminent delivery of a further 60 double deck curtain-siders and 10 double-deck box vans. Th is latest order, featuring an hydraulic moving deck system and ENXL certification for load security, is in addition to the last major order from Asda for 147 double deck curtain-siders delivered to cover the Christmas peak 12 months ago. The new double deck trailers will accommodate pallets and cages carrying ambient produce and will be based at Asda distribution centres serving the store network across the UK. Jon Wilcock, Regional Sales Director of Cartwright commented

on the latest deal: “Both engineering teams have worked very closely to further develop and improve the tailored design that has evolved from the previous major orders from Asda. We are delighted that we have not only created a bespoke trailer for Asda, but have significantly evolved the product so as to meet their operational requirements.”

Ekeri rigid bodywork passes 7-year test for Removals specialist

R

elocation and storage firm Jason Williams Removals, from Carmarthenshire, has been delaying the purchase of a new Ekeri rigid body purely because there is not one good reason to replace its existing Ekeri unit which is now over seven years old! “We put the current body on the road way back in 2011” explained Jason Williams, “and since then we have not needed to do a single thing by way of maintenance or replacement parts – it just keeps going!” Seven years ago, Jason Williams declined the opportunity to purchase a conventional box body and instead opted for the Ekeri coachwork, owing to its potential for easier and more secure loading.

“I’ve said many times, it was a simple choice to make. The Ekeri body has six doors which open along the near-side and a cantilever Zepro tail lift for loading through the rear tail flap. This combination, along with the internal load locking bars and multiple strapping

points, make the vehicle far more flexible and easier to load than any ordinary removals lorry.” So, this year, when deciding whether to purchase a new unit, on reviewing the costs and maintenance associated with the body, Jason had an easy decision to make. “We have definitely made savings on the service and maintenance side of things. Each time the Mercedes-Benz Actros cab is serviced, the bodywork, doors and joints are checked over.” added Jason, “Nothing has needed any attention in the seven years it’s been on the road. Quite literally, it looks as good as the day we bought it.”

Carnegie Fuels well shod with Michelins in Scotland

M

ichelin’s X Works rugged tyre range is said to have transformed the fortunes of Scott ish oil distributor Carnegie Fuels. Typically, the Brechin-based company delivers to farms, industrial estates and residential properties, with some sites that can often only be accessed on rough off-road terrain – putt ing the 6x2 rigid tanker fleet’s tyre fitments at an increased risk of stone cuts and ingress. After testing a set of Michelin X Works D drive axle tyres and XZY3 steer and tag axle fitments on two of his 13 delivery vehicles, owner Kevin Carnegie admitted the superior mileage extracted from the tyres, coupled with the lack of stone damage has far exceeded his expectations.

“We used to have real problems with stone damage. Water would get in and the rubber would start to peel. We used to get a lot of cuts. But with the Michelin X Works, we’re getting no stone ingression at all and virtually not a cut,” he commentd. “I thought they weren’t the right tyres for us because they looked too much like a construction tyre – and we’re all about distribution. But I’ve been very impressed with them. It doesn’t matter if it’s wet, icy or dry – they perform well in all conditions,” he recalled on the initial reluctance to test-run the tyres.

Krone premieres Box Liner Extendable chassis at Transport Compleet in Hardenberg

E

asier handling and low weight for container operators, together with flush-fit rear loading of 20’ containers is the order of the day at Krone Trailer as it presented the multifunctional Box Liner SDC27 eLTU70 sliding sketal chassis at this year’s Transport Compleet Show in Hardenberg, Germany. The chassis carries most types of container from 20 foot to 45 foot. It comes with an extending rear section and optional front extension for 45’ containers. Although Krone uses higher strength steel, the chassis weighs only 4,600 kilograms and owing to the flush-fit container positioning, weight distribution is significantly better than comparable container chassis. Payload is increased too, by up to one tonne, using a 20’ container and Krone

to the kingpin.

Box Liner chassis with a 6-tonne fi ft h wheel load, operating at a gross vehicle weight of 28 tonnes. Weight saving is due mainly to the compact rear-end design, although Krone has not compromised on strength. The longitudinal beams are constructed from 40mm high-grade steel and the 20’ container is positioned further forward which brings the center of gravity closer

The sliding chassis is easily changed from one 40’ container to two 20’ containers, while the front end has an extension for the front locking mechanism which ensures secure loading. Each operating position is colour-coded and can be selected using a simple lever. For added protection and to keep repairs down, the tail lights are integrated into the rear cross-beam. Krone‘s locking system is fi xed to the chassis and ensures that each container is securely loaded onto the chassis. Regarding additional functions, the transport of refrigerated containers is facilitated by a GenSet unit which is equipped with its own fuel tank for independent operation.
