Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles & Ford form partnership

F

ollowing the signing of an MOU – (MemorandumofUnderstanding) last Autumn, Volkswagen AG and Ford Motor Company have revealed the first formal agreements in a broad alliance that positions both companies to boost competitiveness and better serve customers in an era of rapid change in the industry. The announcement marks the last of the independence of two major global brands in the light commercial vehicle industry, as all the main players have shared technology and components over recent decades. The alliance, which does not entail cross-ownership between the two companies, will be governed by a joint committee. Volkswagen CEO Dr. Herbert Diess and Ford CEO Jim Hackett confirmed that the companies intend to develop commercial vans and medium-sized Pick-ups for global markets beginning as early as 2022. “The alliance will drive significant scale and efficiencies and enable both companies to share investments in vehicle architectures that deliver distinct capabilities and technologies. The companies estimate the commercial van and pickup cooperation FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Spring 2019

will yield improved annual pre-tax operating results, starting in 2023. In addition, Volkswagen and Ford have signed an MOU to investigate collaboration on autonomous vehicles, mobility services and electric vehicles and have started to explore opportunities,” the joint statement read. “Over time, this alliance will help both companies create value and meet the needs of our customers and society,” Mr. Hackett said. “It will not only drive significant efficiencies and help both companies improve their fitness, but also gives us the opportunity to collaborate on shaping the next era of mobility.” “Volkswagen and Ford will harness our collective resources, innovation capabilities and complementary market positions to even better serve millions of customers around the world. At the same time, the alliance will be a cornerstone for our drive to improve competitiveness,” Dr. Diess added. Van & Pick-up collaboration Ford and Volkswagen both have strong commercial van and Pick-up businesses

around the globe, with popular nameplates such as the four model Ford Transit family and Ranger as well as the Volkswagen Transporter, Caddy and Amarok. The companies’ collective light commercial vehicle volumes from 2018 totalled approximately 1.2 million units globally, which could represent the industry’s highest-volume collaboration as production scales. Demand for both medium Pickups and commercial vans is expected to grow globally in the next five years. The alliance will enable the companies to share development costs, leverage their respective manufacturing capacity, boost the capability and competitiveness of their vehicles and deliver cost efficiencies, while maintaining distinct brand characteristics. Th rough the alliance, Ford will engineer and build medium-sized Pick-ups for both companies which are expected to go to market as early as 2022. For both parties, Ford intends to engineer and build larger commercial vans for European customers, and Volkswagen intends to develop and build a city van.

Groupe PSA to provide a Compact Van (C-Van) to Toyota

H

av ing collaborated on small car, medium van and drivetrain products and production over the years, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) and Groupe PSA (PSA) are to extend their long-term partnership. The collaboration will see PSA expand the range of commercial vehicles supplied to Toyota Motor Europe, with a small panel C-Van from its Vigo plant (Spain) for sale in Europe towards the end of 2019. PSA and TME started their business supply alliance on mid-size lightcommercial vehicles in 2012, with the Toyota Proace produced at Groupe PSA’s Hordain plant, France. “We are very pleased to enlarge our partnership with Toyota. The aim of the deepening collaboration is for both companies to use their respective strengths to offer both compact and mid-size light commercial vehicles in Europe, benefiting from development and production cost optimisation,” explained Philippe Narbeburu, Senior Vice President LCV BUVU, Group PSA.

Toyota will also participate in the development and industrial investment costs for the future light-commercial vehicle. From January 2021, Toyota will take fi nancial ownership of the Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile Czech s.r.o. (TPCA) plant in Kolin (Czech Republic), the manufacturing joint venture that produces the compact A-segment models. The TPCA joint venture was created by PSA and TMC in 2002 and included a review clause that allowed each partner to reconsider their shareholding. The plant will become a subsidiary of TME, joining the seven other plants Toyota already operates in Europe.

partnership, based on our trusting relationship for the best advantage of our clients, and our companies.” For Toyota, this development is significant in that the Japanese brand will enter Europe’s biggest segment in the light commercial vehicle sector for the fi rst time. Its dealer network is eagerly looking forward to the challenge with great positivity. For PSA, it means that the codenamed K9 compact van line (reigning IVOTY 2019) extends to 5 badged versions, namely the Peugeot Partner, Citroën Berlingo, Opel Combo, Vauxhall Combo and yet to be named Toyota small van.

Carlos Tavares, Chairman of Groupe PSA’s Managing Board, said in marking the agreement: “We open a new chapter of our successful and mutually beneficial

One-to-Two with Cathal Ryan, Fleet Manager & Lars-Erik Aaroy, Commercial Director Toyota Ireland Exciting and busy times ahead for Toyota Ireland, having just launched an extensive line-up of new Hybrid powered cars and a new small van on the way. With climate change and carbon emissions very much on people’s minds and in the media every day, the timing is right for Toyota Ireland to introduce a new range of Corolla saloons, hatchbacks and estates along with the latest generation RAV4, as well as bringing back the Camry nameplate to the executive sector. That’s according to Toyota Ireland’s Fleet Manager Cathal Ryan: “It’s probably the most exciting period in Toyota’s history. With 5 new models (Corolla hatch, Corolla saloon, Corolla Touring Sport, RAV4 and Camry) arriving within weeks, demand from the retail market has never been higher. More exciting from my point of view though, is the phenomenal interest from within the Irish fleet market, as companies implement their exit strategies from diesel cars.” Commercial Director Lars-Erik Aaroy highlights the change of mindset towards Hybrids: “For twenty years we have been leading the way in Hybrid technology. The private buyer has fully embraced this, with 80% of our passenger car sales this year being Hybrid. However we are now seeing an increased interest from leasing companies in balancing their diesel dominated fleets.” Both gentlemen admitted that for the business sector, the fact that there is no VAT rebate on petrol has been a challenge and are calling on Government to look into this, making it easier for fleet operators to make the right decision and opt for cleaner power-trains. Cathal explained the advantage of Hybrid cars: “Hybrid vehicles are now so fuel FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Spring 2019

efficient that even without the VAT reclaim on petrol we can now rival diesel in terms of fuel costs. For example, our new generation Corolla Hybrid burns on average 1,000 litres fewer of fuel over 100,000kms than our diesel competitors, and emits 3 tonnes less CO2 per vehicle. Th is is a huge benefit to our environment – and fleet owners are keen to play their part. In addition Hybrids qualify for the Accelerated Capital Allowance (ACA) which is an att ractive incentive, allowing companies write off 100% of the purchase value of a Hybrid vehicle against their profit in the year of purchase, improving cash flow. Progressive companies are now seeing that there’s a real world, cleaner alternative to diesel.” Cathal also dispelled the myth that Hybrids do not suit rural Ireland: “There is no better place to drive a Hybrid than on the country roads as they are proving to be even more economical than diesels. Recently, we got five taxi drivers in Donegal to replace their diesel cars with Prius and they came back with an average fuel saving of 34% and a 22% reduction in CO2 emissions. We really are entering a new era with regard to emissions reduction.” Regarding running costs Lars-Erik pointed to the stress free maintenance element, as the Toyota Hybrids are more reliable, requiring less unplanned maintenance and therefore less downtime. On the unplanned maintenance element for example, Toyota Hybrids require no clutch replacement (as it’s a CVT auto gearbox),

no alternator or starter motor needs replacement, and as there is no DPF, no regeneration is needed. Factor in that the regenerative braking reduces brake wear, while the timing chain is maintenance free also and the even weight distribution of Hybrid vehicles reduces tyre wear. So, lots of positives here,” explained the Norway native. “The real success of Toyota Hybrids in Ireland can be measured by how well these vehicles hold their second hand value,” said Lars-Erik. “Toyota Hybrid residual values are now higher than diesel competitors, and this gap is growing. Demand for pre-owned Hybrids is phenomenal, and happily this is now being reflected by stronger Hybrid RVs being set by Irish leasing companies.” All at Toyota Ireland and its dealers are also looking forward to the arrival of the new compact van, which will be co-engineered Toyota and Groupe PSA. “This new light duty van will give us a new presence in the biggest volume segment in the market. We’ve been looking forward to this type of product for some time and I believe it offers huge sales potential for the Toyota brand.” The yet un-named small panel van is about a year away from the market place. “In the meantime, our focus remains building upon the success of new model Proace, and the iconic Hilux and Land Cruiser SWB & LWB Commercials. These really are exciting times at Toyota,” commented Lars-Erik.

Light Commercial Vehicle marketplace

O

fficial statistics released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that during 2018 the total number of new Light Commercial Vehicle registrations (LCV) was 25,561 units, recording an increase of 5.55% (from 24,218 in 2017), while Used LCV imports decreased by -2.9%. (13,948 vs 14,371). As with the past three years, the top six brands retain their positions on the sales league table with Ford, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Renault commanding the podium positions. (See chart) Within these figures there are different viewpoints from the manufacturers and distributors on how the market performed and what their collective forecasts are for the 2019 marketplace. In general, the story over 2019 looks much like the year past, with caution expressed over Brexit and its consequences. Some good advice was offered with regard to importing used vehicles from the North or Great Britain, as what may look a bargain may not bring the savings as hoped for, according to Ciarán McMahon, Chairman & Managing Director of Ford Ireland: “We are delighted that Ford was again the number one choice of van in Ireland’s 2018 new LCV market. We saw a very healthy 6.5 percent growth in Ford LCV sales during the year – a result that out-performed the overall market growth figure of 5.5 percent, highlighting the

FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Spring 2019

buoyant nature of the LCV market in Ireland. We would expect that level of growth to continue in 2019. However, the great unknown is of course Brexit: how it will play out and what impact it will have on the LCV market in Ireland.” “Without a doubt, the issue of second hand LCV imports from the UK has had an impact here in Ireland over the last couple of years – granted, it is less pronounced than in the passenger vehicle segment and consequently, the LCV imports have had less of a profi le in the media here. However, I would contend that, more so than in the passenger segment, buyers of second hand UK vans really need to beware. By their nature, there is no way of knowing the history of a potential purchase or what type of use the vehicle may have encountered. Heavy use LCVs are frequently ‘refurbished on the surface’ in the UK and are subsequently sold on as ‘quality’ used vans whereas, in fact, they may have many facets that require attention which the buyer is not aware of. When buying second-hand LCVs, there is no substitute to buying from a trusted dealer who can stand over the quality of the product.” Alan Bateson, Director, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland looked into the figures more deeply: “Whilst the total SIMI figures show a growth of 5.55%, when converted SUVs are excluded, which were stopped at end of July last,

the growth is only 1.4%. Since July the total LCV figures are down 1.5% versus 2017 which shows that the market was increased by the N1 Commercial SUV sector mainly. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles recorded a 12.6% growth over 2018, which was the best among the top three manufacturers in Ireland. Th is was delivered by Crafter at +64.4% moving from 340 units in 2017 to 559 in 2018 - this is the fastest growth in volume models terms. Transporter also grew by 14.0% and Amarok was the fastest growth in its segment (if you exclude the MercedesBenz X-Class, a new entrant at +23.2% versus 2017). Overall, 2018 was a great year for the brand and a stable foundation to grow further in 2019.” “Our market call for 2019 is 21,500 units which will be + 2.4% up on 2018 in the core commercial market. There should now not be a big variance between this and the SIMI market figures as the N1s are gone so I predict the market will fall by 12% in 2019 for this reason but this is due to the removal of these classified vehicles and not a downturn in the market. Used imports actually fell further for our brand as we launched measures and programmes to offset this difficult position and protect dealers. With Vantage, which is Ireland's only Used Van warranty programme, we have seen a huge increase in used retailer sales and the return off this for them,” he added.

MARKET PLACE | 9

to remain on par for 2019

Toyota Ireland is predicting that the 2019 market will remain at similar levels to 2018. According to Zoe Bradley, “this may be tempered a litt le by the ongoing Brexit situation. However, present LCV enquiry levels are encouraging especially for lighter commercial such as Auris Van and Proace as companies focus on reducing running costs and are only opting for heavy duty vans where absolutely necessary. We expect the light duty and medium duty segments will be the most resilient in 2019. Towards the end of 2019 will see the introduction of our new light duty segment van which will allow Toyota compete in the largest LCV market segment. Th is brand new model is expected to deliver class leading payloads and volume capacities at a very

competitive price point, and we expect it to deliver considerable additional volume for Toyota dealers,” she said. Projections for this year at Mercedes-Benz Vans are very similar to 2018. “If there is a growth, we expect it to be modest,” commented Fergus Conheady, Sales Manager. “As there are no new models planned for this year on the LCV side, our focus with be on maximising the potential of our current LCV portfolio.” Regarding LCV fleet sales, it’s been a good year at Mitsubishi Motors in Ireland, with busy times ahead. “The Outlander Business N1 performed very strongly for us in 2018, as it did in 2017 and we expect it to replicate this during 2019 and top the

Vans & Pick-ups! What’s new for 2019?

T

he advent, as defined by EU law, of the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) laboratory test, used to measure fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as well as vehicle pollutant emissions, will dictate production and sales of new light commercial vehicles throughout this year. In reality, it may distort the market somewhat as the new regulations will lead to revisions to both powertrains and vehicle design (and higher prices). Patrick Magee, Renault Group, Country Operations Director commented on the forthcoming situation: “By the time WLTP comes along in September, we should have a clearer idea of what the impact will be. Based on what we’ve already seen with cars, WLTP should shake things up significantly for vans too, resulting in changed line-ups for all manufacturers. The real disruption will come from the end of production of NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) models. In many cases, production ends in Spring 2019, so all Renault dealers are contacting customers, particularly those with specialist requirements, to ensure that orders are placed early to avoid having to wait until 2020.”

Ford Transit PHEV

“For Renault, WLTP will coincide with facelift s for the successful Trafic and Master ranges – a new range of engines on both models will bring improved performance, as well as compliance with the new regulations, while new styling and features will ensure they continue to stand out from the crowd,” he added. In terms of new commercial vehicles in 2019 for long standing market leaders Ford, it has a busy year ahead with new product launches. “In late Quarter One, we will see the arrival of the exciting new Ranger Raptor which we think will be well received by the growing number of Pick-up owners and operators in Ireland”, said Ciarán McMahon, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland. “It is a growing segment in Ireland and one where an att ractive vehicle like the new Ranger Raptor will do well. Then in Q2, we will launch the new Transit Custom FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Spring 2019

It is based on the award-winning Crafter with further variants of that van coming in late into 2019. Meanwhile an updated Transporter (T6PI) will be available for January 2020. Nissan will have a special edition Navara N-Guard arriving soon, featuring an energised exterior and interior design upgrades to emphasise the IPUA award winning Pick-up’s muscular appearance. “N-Guard elevates Pick-up’s appeal as the perfect dual-use vehicle for leisure and business. Enhancements include new black finish to grille, lights, mirrors, door handles, roof rails and wheels. Its higher level of standard equipment includes parking sensors and sunroof,” explained Jana Solovjova, Senior Marketing Executive at Nissan Ireland.

Mitsubishi Outlander Business

Towards the end of 2019 Toyota Ireland will unveil its new small van, which will allow the Japanese brand to compete for the fi rst time in the Light Duty Van segment - the largest LCV market segment. Th is brand new model, co-designed and produced by Groupe PSA, is expected to deliver class leading payloads and volume capacities at a very competitive price point, and will result in considerable additional volume for Toyota dealers. The Mitsubishi Outlander Business which performed strongly in 2018 is expected to replicate this success during 2019 and be among the best selling vehicles in the 2-seater Commercial SUV segment. “We have also received an increase in enquiries for a PHEV derivative and to meet this demand, we have now added Outlander PHEV Business to the price list in standard spec Intense Business and mid-spec Instyle Business. Model Year 2020 L200 [will arrive] in Q3 which will boost our end of year registrations for L200,” commented Robert Montgomery, Fleet Sales Manager, Mitsubishi Motors Ireland.

Nissan NV 300 Concept-Van

97th Brussels Motor Show

E

very second year, the Brussels Motor Show exhibits the latest light commercial vehicles alongside new cars and motorbikes at the Brussels Expo arena, located close to the Heysel Sports Stadium. Professional visitors such as vans and Pick-up users had plenty to do and see, with some interaction involving nominating their “Most Loved Van” from a selected line-up in Hall 12.

Opel Zafira Life

Elsewhere attendees could divide their attention between the new vans and Pick-ups and the latest conversion products and techniques from dedicated specialists and parts/component manufacturers. No more so than at the Nissan stand where an innovative NV300 Concept-van was revealed. Uniquely, the van’s cargo area was exquisitely kitted out as a mobile workshop for a creative woodworking professional. Created and carefully hand crafted by British design studio, Studio Hardie, the NV300 Conceptvan also came equipped with an integrated portable battery solution, called Nissan Energy ROAM – an all-in-one, weatherproof recycled power pack that provides convenient, emission free and silent power while on the go. “With a storage capacity of 700 Wh and maximum power output of 1 kW, this portable battery solution is a state-of-the-art energy hub for a mobile professional,” explained Andrew Limbert, Regional Product Manager, Nissan Motor Corporation. “For a woodworker moving regularly between jobs, it would allow them to power their professional life from tools to tablets – in a highly efficient and eco-friendly way.”

Hyundai H1

“Comprising second-life batteries recovered from end-of life Nissan LEAF electric vehicles, Nissan Energy ROAM is the latest example of Nissan’s leadership in sustainable energy technology. The power pack can even be recharged using a solar panel accessory – as mounted on the roof of the NV300 Concept-van – making it a truly ‘off-grid’ power solution,” he added.

SsangYong Musso

Another interesting exhibit was at the Opel stand where the all-new Zafira Life was globally premiered. It’s a badge sharing replica of the Peugeot Expert Traveller and Citroën Dispatch SpaceTourer models. There is more to come from this new partnership as the next generation Vivaro van will evolve from the source and will be made at the Vauxhall plant in Luton. As Opel is now part of Groupe PSA, the next Vivaro marks the discontinuation of the production and supply deal with Renault, which has lasted decades. Expect the Movano model to move in a similar direction later this year. Other significant new introductions were from South Korean manufacturers

New Euro 6C compliant diesel engines produce 116, 136 and 170 PS with a choice of manual and automatic transmissions. Load capacity on the panel van will be as before, 4,426 litres. Now on sale in Ireland the new Musso Pick-up truck from SsangYong features some design elements of its Rexton brother. The five-seater double cab comes with either 750kg or 1.2 tonne payload (in the LWB version), a 3.5 tonne towing capacity and is powered by the e-XDi 220 181 PS diesel with 400 Nm of torque.

Iveco

On the Ford display area, a cutaway version of its Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV) platform was displayed, with diesel-electric technology which will be used on its Transit Custom van that will go on sale shortly. Regarding the ‘Last Mile’ there were some extremes to the methodology with the Cenntro Automotive Group displaying the Metro, its compact, all-electric utility vehicles for urban logistics and urban services. Then there was the EZ-PRO from Renault – a robo-vehicle created for special zero-emission deliveries and driverless robo-pod fleet management.

Citroën HY

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and MAN, who collaborate on the Crafter and TGE vans respectively have also worked on electric mobility, producing ‘e’ versions, which were showcased here. Citroën came up with an interesting retro take with the Jumper HY taking centre stage, alongside the IVOTY 2019 Award winning Berlingo van. These limited edition models, produced in Italy are a collaboration with Fabrizio Caselani and David Obendorfer as a tribute to Bertoni, designer of the original HY from 70 years ago. Two other notable happenings included Iveco with its 70518H Daily 4x4 which now has 7.0 tonnes GVW and 10.500 kg gross carrying weight. The other was a display of movie type vehicles from the movie car warehouse which also included the iconic Bedford based Rascal van from Scooby Doo! Finally, IVOTY colleague Leo Vanhorrick (top right) representing Belgium, presented the IVOTY 2019 Award replica trophy to Jean-Philippe Imparato, Peugeot Brand CEO.

Introducing Wellhouse (Leisure) Leasing

W

Wellhouse Leisure is a Ford accredited Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM), and offers a range of other campervans based on the Ford Transit Custom or the Ford Tourneo Custom. These will also be available through Wellhouse Leasing in due course.

As fleet and private consumers already enjoy a choice of ways to fund their new cars, Wellhouse Leasing, managed by Drivespeed Leasing Limited, aims to provide them with the same finance options to enable them to be driving one of its campervans instead.

David Elliot, the CEO of Wellhouse Leisure commented: “Having experienced the growth in the campervan market in recent years, it was obvious to me that the finance offerings available to them were lagging behind other sectors, such as cars. The opportunity to work in partnership with a trusted brand like Drivespeed was the ideal chance to bring something new and beneficial to offer to the campervan market.”

ellhouse Leisure, the leading UK & Ireland campervan converter, has added a financial arm to its business. Wellhouse Leasing will offer business and private users with a choice of convenient funding options for its latest models.

The first model to be offered through Wellhouse Leasing is the Wellhouse Ford Custom Le-Tour Van. Th is is ideal for business users as it is based on a Ford Transit Custom van so retains its commercial vehicle status and can operate as a standard van during the working week, but with the ability to be used for leisure activities at the weekend. Based on the Transit Custom in the Limited trim specification, the Le-Tour Van has twin side loading doors with opening windows, and a campervan conversion that includes an elevating roof with roof bed, swivel seats for both driver and passenger, a fully lined interior with LED lighting, 100w solar panel, 12v electric sockets and a leisure battery. It also includes tracks in the rear floor for attaching the optional rear seats or a bike rack.

Citroën to celebrate centenary in style!

E

ven though 2019 has only just started, Citroën has already spent many months preparing behind the scenes for this year. And the reason - its centenary! To come up with the festivities for this exceptional anniversary, the French brand started off by asking the answer to answer a simple question: how would its founder, André Citroën, have celebrated his brand’s 100 years himself? For this visionary, the inventor of modern communication (illumination of the Eiffel Tower, pioneering treks, etc.), it is certain that doing things like everyone else would have been out of the question. Proud of this DNA, Citroën therefore looked at the big picture with a bold package combining international events and activities which will punctuate the whole of the year 2019. On the programme: gatherings of people, ‘Inspired by You’ social media activations giving a voice to customers, brand new concepts and plenty of other surprises.

• •

C6, New C5 Aircross SUV 10 concept cars: C10, GS Camargue, Karin, Activa 1, Xanae, Osmose, C-Métisse, GTbyCitroën, Tubik, CXPERIENCE 10 motor-racing vehicles: Scarabée d’Or, Rosalie, DS 21 from the 1969 Rally of Morocco, SM from the 1971 Rally of Morocco, 2 CV Africa Raid, ZX Rally Raid, Xsara Kit Car, C4 WRC, C-Elysée WTCC, C3 WRC

From the four corners of the world, the Citroën commercial dealer network will itself also sport the colours of the centenary, with layouts specially created for the occasion, both on the inside and the outside of showrooms. Signage, flags, banners, totems and also stickers will take up the theme of the Citroën ‘Origins since 1919’ logo and its bronze-coloured outline. In this same spirit, an original ‘100 YEARS’ 3D sculpture has also been developed. The ambience created in the showrooms through these different elements will perfectly show off the ‘Origins’ collector’s edition models.

For its centenary, Citroën will be celebrating internationally throughout 2019, starting with an appearance at RETROMOBILE 2019 (from 6 to 10 February, Paris Expo Porte de Versailles). For this people’s show, a must for lovers of motor vehicle history, Citroën is putting an exceptional package together with a special centenary stand of 1,200 m2 accommodating 30 iconic models around 3 hubs: • 10 production vehicles: Type A 10 HP, C3 5 HP, Traction Avant, Type H, 2 CV, DS 21 Pallas, Méhari, CX 25 Prestige, FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Spring 2019

The erstwhile British brand, now resurrected under Chinese ownership through automotive giant SAIC has been revitalised under the Harris Group which distributes the brand in Ireland and the UK. A host of new models in the next couple of years will give clear pointers towards the brand’s future aspirations, but for now it continues with the well proven V80 (pictured) in various guises including chassis cab, crew cab and minibus, as well as an all-electric EV80 version. The V80 panel van comes in three versions - a Low Roof with Short Wheel Base, Medium Roof with Long Wheel Base and High Roof with Long Wheel Base. he year just past was a milestone for Land Rover in that the iconic British brand (now owned by Indian conglomerate TATA) marked its 70th Anniversary. 2019 is also significant for Land Rover as the Discovery model range celebrates its 40th birthday. Now in its fifth generation the Discovery has made great strides in the business sector. The commercial version, especially five-seater edition, has proved to be especially popular, recording sales of 875 units in 2016 for instance, making it the brand’s bestselling model in Ireland. Due to Government legislation changes, the B2B variant with the second row of seats is no longer available. Land Rover Ireland has relaunched the fifth generation commercial as a two-seater only, but with

First Drive: Citroën and Peugeot’s impressive new compact vans

T

here’s always a certain sense of anticipation, a frisson of excitement, on the occasion of a first opportunity to drive a new vehicle. How will it compare to the outgoing model? What new tech is on board that has the potential to raise the product to new levels? That level of anticipation is raised when the vehicle - or vehicles in question have just been awarded the prestigious International Van of the Year 2019 accolade by a highly experienced and knowledgeable selection of jurors from all over Europe - chaired by the esteemed editor of this publication. Technological advances and the availability of two wheelbase versions were cited by the judges as instrumental in the PSA triumvirate of Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo winning the IVOTY 2019 Award, which was presented to the three brands at the IAA Show in Hannover in September. The new vans arrive in Ireland this Spring, but our first driving encounter with the Berlingo and Partner (no Combo on this occasion) was last November on the roads and villages north of Paris. Visually Citroën and Peugeot have done a good job in creating separate identities for the two vans. From the front both follow family design cues, with the Berlingo in particular bearing resemblance to the latest generation products from the brand. Inside, the Peugeot is distinguished by the compact steering wheel that features across much of its range, and forms part of its i-Cockpit design - the first commercial vehicle to receive this layout. It includes a heads-up display and an 8” capacitive touch screen located in the centre of the dashboard. On the other hand we noticed that on at least some of the Citroën models on display, the more traditionally styled layout with full sized steering wheel allows for the addition of an extra storage compartment on top of the dash. Overall both models score well on interior practicality, with lots of useful storage places. The addition of a long wheel base version adds considerably to practicality. Whereas the regular models can take load lengths of up to 3.1 metres long with the front seat folded flat, and have an FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Spring 2019

overall load volume of 3.7 cubic metres, the longer versions can carry up to 3.4 metres and have a load capacity of 4.4 cubic metres - as well as coming with two sliding side doors. Payloads vary from 650kg to 1 tonne depending on engine and configuration. Diesels are likely to dominate sales though the option of a 1.2 Puretech petrol unit with 110hp later this year is a welcome alternative, particularly for operators that do not cover large mileage. Driving it in France it proved to be a prett y peppy performer, carrying a 250kg payload effortlessly. The majority of diesel buyers are likely to opt for either the 75hp or 100hp 1.6 BlueHDi but there’s also a more powerful albeit smaller capacity 1.5 BlueHDi with 130hp offered on Peugeot’s (but not Citroën’s) Irish line-up. Th is was the other engine available to test-drive in France, and suffice to say it’s not lacking in power. Driving impressions of all versions are of a solid yet easy to manoeuvre vehicle with excellent visibility, and a comfortable driving position. So what of the new technology that impressed the IVOTY judges? Two innovations stood out, both of which are available as options. Firstly, there’s an Overload Indicator, a warning system that measures the load capacity, warning when the limit is being reached and again when exceeded. The other is Surround Rear Vision. 2 cameras, one located at the base of the passenger side mirror and the other at the top of the rear panel doors provide a lateral view on the passenger side, as well as a rear view. We were impressed, particularly at how useful it is at revealing blind spots, and would consider it a well worthwhile investment. Whether it’s offering the basics such as decent payloads, load capacities and fuel efficient engines, or leading the way with technological innovations, these new products from the expanded PSA Group are set to be serious contenders in the compact van class. The Peugeot Partner is priced from €13,615 ex-Vat / €16,700 inc. VAT, with the Citroën Berlingo from €14,261 ex-VAT / €17,495 inc. VAT. Text & Photos: Cathal Doyle - cathal@fleet.ie
