New van launches keep space with buoyant market

F

ollowing the unprecedented phenomenally busy year for new van launches in 2014, the fi rst half of 2015 particularly will keep members of the trade press and light commercial vehicle customers enthused with what’s in store. Van users are on the increase across Europe with 2014 year-on-year sales (from November) up 11% over the same period in the previous year (totalling 1.4 million) which augers well for those investing in the sector. Fleet Van & Utility can exclusively report on the new product launch plans from the major European manufacturers. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles leads the way with two new vans due that will replace the Caddy and Transporter. Caddy 4, as it is termed will be introduced in Europe within the next few months, while Transporter 6 (T6) will be introduced before the summer (See Cover story 1 on pages 11). Fellow German brand Mercedes-Benz plans to mark the 20th anniversary since the introduction of the best-selling Sprinter range and will launch the 4x4 version of the Vito this month. Alas, this special addition to the line-up will only be available in left hand drive form. New Vito joins the Sprinter in North American markets in 2015 also. With the new Ducato successfully entering global markets, the new FIAT Professional Doblo Cargo heads in the same direction and will make its fi rst trip across the Atlantic to be sold as the RA M Promaster City. (See Cover story 2 on pages 12/13). Th is spring will also see PSA Peugeot/Citroën reveal their latest

Partner and Berlingo vans while Nissan replaces the Primastar with a rebadged Renault Trafic from its Alliance partner. From Korea, Hyundai has ambitious plans for its new H350 3.5 tonne van and chassis/cab range. By April we will have the all-new Mercedes-Benz Vito entering the Irish market, which will be offered in front and rear wheel drive for the fi rst time. On the Pick-Up front, expect to see a revised Ford Ranger before the autumn while details of the new Mitsubishi L200 will come to the fore, as will fi rst pictures of the new FIAT Professional 1-tonne Pick-Up based on the aforementioned L200. (See story on next page). No doubt, there will be other revamped models due for launch that come under the LCV portfolio from Car Derived Vans (CDV) Commercial/Business SUVs and of course panel vans and chassis cabs. Peugeot Van range delivers affordable quality

eugeot’s hard-working Partner, Expert and Boxer vans now come with a three year manufacturer warranty and now available with a 5.9% APR fi nance rate, meaning a new Peugeot van could cost from as litt le as €135 per month.

Des Cannon, Managing Director at Gowan Distributors Limited, Peugeot Importers in Ireland commented, “The light commercial van market in Ireland has witnessed an incredible 50% growth this year, a key indicator that the Irish economy is recovering. The Peugeot van range is really well placed to take advantage of further growth expected in 2015, given our strong fi nance offer and proven quality. I have every confidence that this action will undoubtedly aid the Peugeot brand to further increase its van market share in Ireland.” The Peugeot Partner, fitted with PSA’s latest HDi diesel engine range, is available in 2 lengths. The standard version has a capacity of 3.3m 3, a payload of 625 or 850kg and a loading length of 1.80m. A multiflex bench seat, standard in the Active trim, allows 3 occupants to be seated in the front. With the bench seat partly retracted, loading capacity is increased by 400 litres. A long body special order version offers a volume of 3.7m3, a payload of 750kg and a length of 2.05m. The Peugeot Partner retails from €15,755 plus dealer delivery charges, or from €12,846 ex-VAT. With Peugeot’s 5.9% APR fi nance, it’s available from €135 per month, including VAT. Peugeot Expert delivers high-performance thanks to the efficient HDi diesel engines. With payloads from 1000kg to 1200kg, a load volume from 5m3 to 6m3 and a load floor length from 2255mm to 2586mm, the Expert is both stylish and reliable. with a fi xed bench seat in row two, is also offered for professionals wishing to transport up to six people while retaining a large loading volume. Expert retails from €21,855 plus dealer delivery charges, or from €17,806 ex-VAT. With Peugeot’s 5.9% APR fi nance, it’s available from €140 per month, including VAT. Peugeot’s latest edition Boxer, voted APMP Van of the Year 2015, was tested under extreme conditions before launch and its durability is clear. Boasting a strengthened body structure, larger brakes, new suspension damper brackets and a range of 2.2-litre HDi engines with new injection system. With five payloads available in Ireland, ranging from 1155kg to 1525kg, three different lengths (L1, L2 and L3) and two different heights (H1 and H2), the new Boxer swallows goods with a volume of from 8m 3 to 13m3, in a cavernous cargo area measuring from 2670mm to 3705mm in length. It retails from €22,000 plus dealer delivery charges, or from €17,924 ex-VAT and is covered by a three year manufacturer warranty. With 5.9% APR fi nance, it’s available from €145 per month, including VAT.

Mitsubishi and Nissan head the posse of new Pick-Up launches

W

ithin ten years of its original launch, the Mitsubishi L200 has accumulated almost 1.3 million unit sales. News from Thailand, where the 1-tonne Pick-Up is made, is that an allnew model has gone on sale. Like all Pick-Up truck manufacturers, which strives to combine business and pleasure in one vehicle, the all-new L200 (or Triton as it is called in Thailand) has been developed, according to Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC), to be the “Ultimate Sport Utility Truck – combining the comfortable interior of a passenger car with the functionality and reliability of a Pick-Up.” While appearing muscular, sleek and dynamic in its styling (as was the outgoing model), “The new L200 provides generous interior space, ample payload capacity and class-leading handling.” On the technical side, modifications have been made to the drivetrain and suspension settings as well as improvements to sound-proofing and vibration damping. As before, new L200 will be available in single, double and club cab variants powered by a new 2.4 litre turbo diesel alongside the revamped and well-proven 2.5 litre turbo diesel and a 2.4 litre petrol, sold in certain markets. MMC has been producing Pick-Ups since 1978, selling over four million units worldwide. The latest L200 due for launch in 2015 is the fi fth-generation model. This version will be used as the platform for the newly established partnership between Mitsubishi and FIAT Chrysler Automobiles for the Japanese brand to provide a new 1-tonne Pick-Up for FIAT Professional to market worldwide. Meanwhile Nissan Motor Company has premiered its 12th generation Pick-Up at the Bangkok International Motor Show, Thailand demonstrating

the Japanese company’s pedigree in the segment over the past 80 years. Improved all round, the new NP300 Navara “boasts highly competitive fuel economy, faster acceleration, a more rigid and durable frame as well as newly designed body shell.” No doubt new Navara looks sharper, sportier than ever! Its side profile gives it this distinction as does the muscular front end. Again, king and double cab models are available, as are 2WD and 4x4 units, (the latter’s AWD system can be engaged ‘on-the-fly’). Inside, the use of aluminium-like finish on the centre cluster and console compliment the higher quality feel and build. Overall, the interior is spacious and comfortable. “Since we built our first Pick-Up in 1933, over 14 million customers around the globe have come to depend on a Nissan Pick-Up to transport their families, workmates and cargo, sometimes in the toughest of circumstances. Nissan Pick-Ups are often the lifeblood of their communities, and they need a broader range of abilities than almost any other vehicle. Engineering a good one isn’t easy, but with the NP300 Navara, we’ve added to our accumulated 80 years of Pick-Up know-how, more comfort, convenience and SUV-inspired features, in-order to build a great one,” said a Nissan spokesperson. “The Nissan New NP300 Navara sets new benchmarks for performance, toughness, versatility and running costs; all the qualities that are critical for Pick-Up users,” continued the statement. Powering the new Navara range is a new 2.5 litre 4-cylinder diesel with maximum 190hp/140kW horsepower and up to 450 Nm of torque. Fuel economy has been improved by as much as 11% over the previous model. A 7-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission can be selected as required.

Harris Group to re-introduce LDV Van Range

L

DV, once a renowned light commercial brand in the UK is making its way back into the Irish market via China and the Harris Group. Since LDV was taken over by the Chinese automotive giant SAIC, export markets have progressed in Australia, Chile and South Africa and now Ireland. In 2011, SAIC launched the latest version of the LDV panel van, called the V80, but still based on the original concept developed by LDV in a joint venture with Daewoo in 2004. On its return to Western markets, the front wheel drive V80 will be powered by a 2.5 litre VM Motori TDCI diesel that produces 136hp, 330 Nm of torque and mated to a 6-speed gearbox. Its suspension has been expertly retuned by MIRA in the UK. Features include double rear doors, single sliding door, air-conditioning and parking sensors. Value for money will be the USP from the LDV range under the importation and distribution by Harris Group subsidiary, LDV Ireland. Att ractive fi nance and warranty packages will also help to generate sales. At the time of arrival of the fi rst models from China, applications from interested dealers are being processed. V80, which features many of the industry’s blue chip components will be sold in

Ireland as a panel van initially with minibus and chassis cab versions to follow. It will be positioned in the 1 tonne plus segment currently dominated by Ford, Volkswagen and Renault. Shanghai Automotive Industry Components (SAIC) is a major Chinese partner of two of the biggest names in the global automotive industry - General Motors and Volkswagen - with an annual output of over four million units. It has strong commercial vehicle links with Iveco for the Asian markets and also owns MG UK.

“I

t’s an ill wind that does not favour somebody” and with the recent heavy snowfall and Storm Rachel forcefully hitting us folk in the west, we were favoured to be driving the latest Great Wall Steed that week. The Chinese brand’s switchable 4x4 system was required to get around, providing sure-footedness under the extremely slippy conditions. As one of China’s most successful SUV manufacturers and exporters, the Great Wall Motor Company, formed in 1984, boasts impressive credentials in the Pick-Up truck market with over one million units sold globally since 1998. Its fi nishing record in the Dakar Rally in the past few years is credible also. Confidence in the product has led Great Wall to offer a 6-year/200,000 kilometres warranty programme. Some of the world’s leading component suppliers such as Richardo, Delphi, Valeo and Bong Warner have their products installed. For model year 2015, Great Wall Motors Ireland has introduced an upgraded version of the Steed Double-Cab Pick-Up, offering even better value with improved quality and higher specification levels. Modifications made to the Steed’s drivetrain bring it up to speed with the opposition. It's sold in Ireland with two trim levels – Steed S and SE with prices starting at €23,666 (excluding VAT and metallic paint). The various tweaks made to the new Steed stemmed from customer and

dealer feedback. While the body shape remains relatively unchanged (with the exception of the light clusters and the side indicators now incorporated into the door mirrors) changes under the bonnet are notable. The 2.0 litre turbo diesel is Euro 5 compliant and now produces 139PS @ 4,000 rpm with maximum torque levels at 305Nm spread over a broad rev range of 1,800 to 2,800 rpm. Stopping power has improved also with rear disc brakes replacing the drum units used previously. Another positive move is that its towing capacity is now certified at 2.5 tonnes (with a braked trailer), up 500kg. The additional weight added follows independent tests at Millbrook Proving Ground in the UK where it was put through a set of tough tests by an independent team of engineers. Maximum payload is still at 1,050kg while the dimensions of the cargo bed which measures 1,380mm x 1,460mm x 480mm (lengths, width and depth). Get indoors and discover a revamped and well-equipped interior environment. For the money, the Steed SE as test driven is one of the best specified Pick-Ups in the marketplace. New Steed now comes with Air-Con, Bluetooth/ USB connectivity, heated leather seats and a multifunction rear view mirror that has auto-dimming SPEC CHECK and an outside temperature Make/Model display. A Tyre Pressuring Monitoring System is also Body Type incorporated here, which Engine

“Timing is everything,” to use another wellknown phrase and the week with the Steed coincided with the depths of our Winter weather. From heavily snowed roads to the subsequent floods and the potholes, the Great Wall Pick-Up excelled in these elements. When the going gets rough, four-wheel traction is available at the touch of a button. Switch from two-wheel-drive (2H) to all-wheel-drive (4H) On-the-Fly, but for low speed 4x4 traction, the vehicle needs to be brought to a stop before selecting the 4L button on the centre console. A flashing light and a display on the dash indicates which mode of traction is engaged. For those going off-road regularly, galvanised body panels and a rust proofed chassis that has a 6-year anti-perforation warranty provide solid reassurance. The Steed is available in basic Titanium While and three metallic colours (optional, at extra cost) – Pearl Black, Sky Silver and Noble Grey. Accessories to buy include reversing camera and cargo load liner. Under the varying circumstances, the new Steed performed in a more refined manner than the previous model and less higher revs required from the revised drivetrain. A comfortable seating position, with good visibility from the glazed area and exterior mirrors. Over the week, its fuel return averaged 34 mpg. One point of note is that the speedometer is in miles and not kilometres, so one has to keep an eye on the clock regarding legal speed limits, etc. With improvements made all round to the Steed, the Great Wall Pick-Up is better value than ever. Great value for money too!

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles on Mile High!

lan Bateson, Managing Director, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland, at an end of year briefi ng spoke about the German brand's successes in 2014, which has seen the highest sales volume and best financial results since the Volkswagen Group National Sales Company (NSC) was set up. He also spoke about the brand's optimism of continued growth in 2015. In terms of new programmes, Alan set out how the brand has reintroduced 0% fi nance across every model within its range and that no other brand has come close to this offer. He also spoke about a market first with the launch of Caddy PCP Solutions, the first Personal Contract Plan (PCP) offer on a commercial vehicle in the Irish market. Th is product is now launched across all of its 24 specialised Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle centres in Ireland. Alan continued with other new programmes such as the brand’s service and maintenance plans, which offers customers the flexibility to plan exactly what servicing and maintenance they require for their vehicle and pay for it on a monthly basis. Sortimo, which offers customers the complete solution for flooring, cladding, shelving and other accessories, was also mentioned. Edwin Fay, a customer of Blackwater Motors, Cork, who was introduced as the inaugural entrant into ‘Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Mile

High Club’ outlined his use of fleet of Caddy Maxi vans that cover on average 250,000 kilometres a year. His 2012 Caddy Maxi has over 560,000 kilometres on the clock or an average of 5,000 kilometres per week. Edwin was invited back to showcase his mileage on his new 151 Caddy at the next event, when another customer will join the VW CV Mile High Club.

Hyundai’s Santa Cruz concept

H

yundai’s Santa Cruz concept which premiered at the Detroit Motor Show doesn’t focus on all the same att ributes as traditional Pick-Up trucks. The concept is purposefully compact, and although it has four doors and seating for five, its overall footprint is similar to a Crossover SUV. These dimensions make it ideal for navigating the urban environment or a tight parking spot that most pick-up drivers often have to pass by. It offers a unique versatile cargo bed that provides separated storage for all they want to bring along. Sometimes there are needs for even more cargo room; that’s why Santa Cruz offers an innovative tailgate extension that allows the bed length to be expanded whenever those “just in case” moments arise. The extension is perfect for everything from an epic mountain bike trip to bringing home an antique chest or classic motorcycle that’s ripe for restoration. When fully extended, Santa Cruz’s bed length is similar to a mid-size Pick-Up, providing the ability to carry much more than its compact footprint would suggest, yet only when needed.

ver wish to drive Route 66 ……. in a Ford Mustang? Well, that dream can be realised, courtesy of Celtic Horizon Tours. Ireland’s leading multi-day group touring specialists is organising a unique two week trip crossing nine States in the World’s most iconic Rock ‘n’ Roll car, which celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. New Volkswagen Caddy –

Set to deliver the perfect round

U

nlike movie sequels where more often than not, the followups are not as good as the originals, the same cannot be said of the automobile industry. Take the Volkswagen Caddy for instance, the current edition was introduced in 2004 and now all these years later and 1.5 million in sales, the fourth generation is upon us. Caddy 4, created in-house by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Chief Designer, Albert-Johann Kirzinger, is best of all featuring a more rounded yet sharper and sportier look. Members of the International Van of the Year jury were invited to the home of Volkswagen in Wolfsburg, Germany for a sneak preview of the new Caddy plus the first look at the Transporter 6, and even drawings of the all-new Crafter which will be made in Poland from 2016. At the Wolfsburg event, we were given an in-depth description from AlbertJohann on the Volkswagen design strategy, present and future. What is significant between all of its commercial vehicles from Pick-Ups to heavy trucks is the three-level horizontal lines crossing the front of the vehicle. As noticed with the new Caddy, the front is more rounded, with improved aerodynamics, yet features a series of sharp vertical lines stemming from the bonnet and side panels. Each line has a purpose and ends up continuing towards the back end of the vehicle. Albert-Johann has transformed the interior too with a purpose. For the commercial version of the Caddy 4, storage space is the priority, while the popular passenger variant goes more upmarket and is more family orientated. New Caddy won’t be short on high technology either as it brings new levels into the small panel van sector. Talking about Driver Assist systems here from Adoptive Cruise Control (ACC), Park Assist, City Emergency Braking, main beams assist, reversing camera, heated windscreen, Stop/Start Driver Alert, etc. Impressive list! Powering and fueling the new Caddy range will be a broad line up of petrol, diesel and Natural Gas (Euro 6) engines. The latter being the new 1.4 litre TGI 81kW (109hp) while the 2.0 litre TDI diesel range spreads from 55kW (75PS) to 110kW (150PS). The reworked 1.0 litre and 1.4 litre TSI petrols cover from 62kW (84PS) to 92kW (125PS). Manual and automatic gearboxes will be available on the 2WD and AWD (4 Motion) units on sale this summer across the EU as mentioned by Joachim Rotenpieler, Technical Development Board Member at VWCV. Fuel consumption has been considerably reduced by up to 28% for the BlueMotion versions he stated.

driver’s head. For additional load space, the passenger seat folds down as a section of the bulkhead comes around. Otherwise the load volume is the same as before. According to Albert-Johann, the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles design philosophy speaks ‘one common language’ and he listed out various ‘blocks of value and trust’ within that strategy including reliability, efficiency, functionality, solidness, sophistication, character, friendliness and to be a working partner for the owner. On the frontal design he was keen to emphasise that the horizontal lines emphasise width with the enclosed lines around the lights, together with the LED day time running lights having the 3D effect. The additional grille openings, he explained, are to facilitate the extra cooling required for the Euro 6 engines. On being asked why the side indicator lenses were not incorporated in the door mirrors like some other vans, he said it was simply to keep the cost of ownership down “as replacing damaged mirrors is expensive”. The chief designer also worked on creating a 3D effect with the interior, with as much open spaces for storage as possible. This came about after conducting customer clinics on what they need in a day-to-day working van. At the Visualization Centre at the Volkswagen headquarters Dr. Eckhard Scholz, in outlining future plans for his CV brand, stated that the core of the company is the Transporter right from the days of the original T1 though the 65 years and five generations of same. Uniquely too, there is an even breakdown of its customer base 50:50 from the private and business orientated customers. Within the next two years the whole VW CV range will be revamped, starting with the Caddy, Transporter, Crafter 3 and Amarok 2. The new Crafter will be 100% Volkswagen, following the separation from its design and production collaboration with Mercedes-Benz. Albert-Johann is currently working on the redesign of the Volkswagen Constellation truck range on sale in South America and these may ‘wing their way’ into EU markets in due course.

As per the photos, Caddy 4 has a new front (bonnet, grille, lights), doors, mirrors, tailgate, wheels and interior plus of course the new engines. But from the B Pillar back and the platform, the van’s build is basically the same as the outgoing model. Its side profile cuts a dash as the wedge shaped groove surrounds the door window panel. New FIAT Doblò Cargo takes global load

S

ince first launched in 2002 the FIAT Doblò Cargo has accumulated sales of more than a million units in more than 80 countries. Generation four marks new beginnings for the Italian’s small panel van and passenger carrier. New FIAT Doblò enters the North American market for the fi rst time where it retails as the RA M ProMaster City. Secondly, the Doblò will feature FIAT Professional branding on the vehicle and this full badging element will spread across all of its LCV family into the future. Twice winner of the coveted International Van of the Year Award (2006 & 2011) the latest FIAT Doblò received its world premiere at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hannover, Germany. Six models were showcased – two

cargo versions (L1-H1 standard length – standard height) equipped with 1.3 litre MultiJet II diesels with 75hp and 90hp, the latter with new EcoJet technology. The former was fitted with a swivel partition and the passenger seat folding down to the floor and with a rear roof flap, while the latter features a multi-function front bench seat, a Uconnect Nav 5” touch screen radio and electric/heated/folding door mirrors. The L2-LWB H1 (standard roof) Maxi variant with 100hp from the 1.6 litre MultiJet II comes equipped with 3 front seats for the fi rst time. Th is additional centre seat coincides with a dashboard re-design but disappointingly for us, is only available on left-hand-drive models. Then there was the Work-Up dropside type with 135hp 2.0 litre MultiJet II, 3 front seats, marine plywood load platform and exterior

load bars. The other versions were the large volume Cargo XL (L2Hw) kitted out as a mobile workshop and a Combi (crew cab) with 120hp 1.4 litre Natural Power (Petrol/ CNG dual fuel). Available for purchase early this year, the Doblò will be offered with around 200 different chassis types and more than 1,000 possible versions and solutions. As with previous generations, the new Doblò will be produced at the Tofaş plant in Bursa, Turkey which is a Gold Medal World Class Manufacturing accredited facility. Basically for Model Year 2015, the new FIAT Doblò, in both passenger and commercial forms feature a fresh exterior design, improved engine performance for key models (torque response up by 40%) and a new EcoJet version engineered to lower fuel consumption and reduce running costs even further. Its new bonnet shape is more tapered and combined with new headlamps, wider grille, new front bumper with lower air intakes and fog lamps to complete the redesigned front end. New rear light clusters with its sleeker back section are not only the main changes as the insertion of the FIAT Professional logo on the tailgate is a significant development. FIAT Professional can now become a stand alone LCV manufacturer within the FIAT Chrysler Automobile (FCA) Group. With its revised drivetrain, new Doblò combines the fuel consumption and emission levels of a B-segment vehicle with the comfort of a mid-size saloon, the overall dimensions of a compact van and the payload of a superiorsegment van. Besides that this vehicle was originally conceived as a commercial

vehicle in every sense, that can be adapted to multiple applications and numerous outfitt ings. Its flexibility and versatility is clearly demonstrated by its 1 tonne payload and in excess of 5m 3 load volume. For the 1.3 litre and 1.6 litre turbo diesel engines, the torque response has been enhanced: allowing higher torque to be produced at low revs (on the 1.3 MultiJet this has increased by approximately 40%) and consequently greater flexibility and quicker engine response times. The 90hp 1.3 MultiJet II and 105hp 1.6 MultiJet II engines are also available in the “EcoJet” version and they offer a considerable reduction in terms of fuel consumption and emission levels, thanks to the use of the Start & Stop system, low rolling resistance tyres, low-viscosity oil, 'smart' alternator, variable displacement oil pump and aerodynamic pack. All this makes it possible to achieve fuel consumption levels of up to 4.4

l/100km and 115 g/km of CO 2 . Following the launch, the Traction+ system will also be available. It guarantees greater traction even on poor grip surfaces (such as with a wheel on snow or mud) without weighing down the vehicle and increasing running costs (which happens, for example, with 4x4 systems). Lastly, the performance levels have also been enhanced in terms of acoustics, thanks to dedicated passenger compartment soundproofing solutions which make it possible to achieve an average reduction of 3dB less noise in the cab. Of course, all the traits that have made the FIAT Doblò a critical and commercial success, such as its excellent dynamics and comfort - courtesy of its sophisticated bi-link suspension - and its segment-leading load and

volume capacities, remain central to the new model’s appeal as well. In terms of safety, the Doblò’s exceptional ride and handling is further enhanced by a full suite of standard driver’s aids including ESC (Electronic Stability Control), ABS brakes with EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution), ASR (Anti Slip Regulation), HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist) and HillHolder systems that help the driver during hill starts. Front airbags and front side airbags, as well as TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) are also part of the Doblò’s safety arsenal. Finally, the new FIAT Doblò Cargo range comprises four body-styles, two roof height options and two wheelbase lengths. 2014 LCV Market in Review Ford enters 2015 as Ireland’s #1 Van Brand

ith total Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) sales in Ireland increasing by 50 percent or 5,576 units in 2014, (up from 11,076 units in 2013 to 16,652), the sector significantly outstripped new car sales, which had an increase in the order of 30 percent. Fleet Van & Utility spoke with manufacturer representatives to review the marketplace and identify projections for 2015. Ciaran McMahon, newly appointed Chairman & Managing Director of Ford Ireland, commented: “Our CV sales teams put in a stellar performance last year, our tally of 4,299 units was more than 50 percent more than our nearest rival. “Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles recorded their best year of van sales for six years,” according to Fergus Conheady, Sales Manager, Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles Ireland. “The Vito in its fi nal year of production grew its market share by almost 5% (4.88%) of the mid-size van segment, this was the largest growth of any of the vehicles within this segment." The award winning Sprinter recorded a similar growth of 4.92% of the large van segment which is a fitt ing performance. “We look forward to maintaining these strong results, during 2015 as we celebrate the Sprinters 20th birthday and launch the all new Vito range in April,” he added. One-to-One with Ford Ireland's new Senior Management Team, Ciaran McMahon, Managing Director; Michael Ring, Commercial Vehicle Manager and John Manning, Marketing Manager with Jarlath Sweeney JS. Looking at Ford’s extended LCV family, the Transit Courier is here now, where do you see the marketplace for this urban or city van? CMcM. We hadn’t actually looked at it as a city van, we brought it out to the fleets and it’s proven to be a very versatile van. It’s actually nearly a direct competitor to our own Transit Connect at this stage. It’s more than a city van, it’s a van for a small user who wants a van that’s agile, offers great fuel economy and with great driving dynamics. These are the things of overriding factors that are coming back to us, so it’s a van that’s going to be very strong next year. JS. As the numbers in this segment are small, will the Courier impinge on your Fiesta or Focus Car Derived Vans? CMcM. There will be a small impact, but we don’t see it as huge. We may also see a small impact on the short wheelbase based Connect as well. JS. Apart from the vehicle itself, how significant are the pricing and spec structures? CMcM. It is priced very well and getting great feedback from our cost structure, and then there’s the fuel economy at 3.7 litres per 100 km, which is fantastic. The worry at a very high level when the whole project began at Ford Europe was how it’s going to impact on Connect. Was it going to cannibalise our own share? Once we got the vehicle, we saw some of that, but more importantly is where it stands versus competition. Because our Connect was priced at a certain level, we’ve the Courier at €13,990, we now feel we can actually not necessarily compete in the Courier segment, but will compete against Citroën Berlingo versus Volkswagen Caddy, but with a price advantage. As regards the Car Derived Vans we have had a couple of discussions with fleets who were considering Car Derived Vans in lieu of it, but that hasn’t overlapped yet. JS. On the Transit 2-tonne as it’s called, even though it’s not a very fair name for it, as it goes up 4.7 tonne GVW, looking to the higher weights, where do you see your marketplace for that, has your dealer network the equipment necessary in the workshops? FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Spring 2015

MR. We have been looking at this for a long time, and thankfully our dealers are in place, ready to receive it. They will be workshop ready for a 6 tonne Transit, some day it will come. Now we have equipment, the tooling and have the trade, so that side is covered off . Having the option of the 4.7 tonnes for us is fantastic because our owner operators are fi nally gett ing more conscious of weight legislation and for the fi rst time are having long discussions on Gross Vehicle Mass, Gross Train Mass, etc. So the days are moving away now from where you purchase a van and you put whatever you require in the back of it – now it’s the case of what do you actually carry? Th is is the van that suits your requirements. That’s a big part of my role as well, educating fleets and working with them for example, our Transit is up to 4.7 tonnes and can also tow the trailer of 3.5 tonnes, which is huge for a vehicle in that class. JS. From the commercial side, are you going to have more dedicated LCV dealers, is that part of the strategy going forward? CMcM. Ford Ireland has established specialist Transit Centre dealers and that is currently being rolled out, but there is another notch to go up to which is 24/7 services, etc. We also have dealers who are CV experts. There is a formal network within our CV specialists line-up, they are go-to dealers who are the specialists in CVs so the customers know where to go. JS. Michael, please define your role within the organisation and where you see potential for developing your particular aspect of business? MR. My role is Commercial Fleet Manager which basically looks after both the retail and the fleet aspect of the commercial vehicles. I also dabble on the car side of business as well. The role is fantastic, it’s huge, and it’s going to grow dramatically, obviously, as the commercial industry is growing – there are different areas of the business coming in - from conversions to campervans, etc – it’s a huge area that we need to explore, so it’s a great opportunity. JS. John, there is much activity for your department with Ford’s CV family also? JM. Likewise, commercial vehicles are hugely important to Ford and that’s a great position to be in so again from a marketing perspective

I can absolutely assure you that CVs will be up front – up there along with the Focus and Mondeo in terms of our mindset. We have launched the new Focus Car Derived Van and that’s currently in the stocking pipeline. January 1 saw us launching a Kuga, a 2 seat in one amalgamated van. We have a great CV story for 2015, on the back of a great CV story last year being number 1. It is our intention to maintain that top spot for 2015 but that doesn’t come simply by expecting for it to happen, you’ve got to invest in it. We have a number of product stories that are in the pipeline such as the new Ranger Pick-up also coming. When you look at that and combine it to the new Focus van and the Courier, we are now building awareness for the Kuga van and with all of the other CV models that have just been renewed over the last 18 months, the portfolio essentially targets nearly every demographic within the CV portfolio. So, if you are a CV customer, Ford Ireland has a vehicle for nearly every requirement that you can imagine. I don’t think many competitors can claim that, but that’s something that we must leverage through 2015 and intend to do so. JS. Final question, Euro 6, AdBlue and SCR technology is moving into LCVs, will further education be required from dealers to explain to customers of this requirement? JM. Again it goes down to the fact that education is what’s key for us. I think Ciaran mentioned earlier our target customer group is our dealer body, and by extension then our commercial customers are at the next stage. For our direct customers or our dealers we are putt ing in huge investment to be correct in the sales process and with the commercial customer because of the changes in legislation. What is required today, all the technicalities that are changing in the engineering of the vehicles, it’s not just good enough to be the number one on the portfolio side, you also have to have the number one dealer network and I think we have that personally. But we need to be not complacent and we need to continually invest in training assessments both face-to-face and online. So I suppose the onus is on us to ensure that they have the correct knowledge to sell these vehicles but we are fairly confident that they will do.

New Daily heralds bright Iveco future A choice of panel vans, tippers, dropside and a Luton bodied van were on offer. All were fitted with the 2.3 litre engine available in three power outputs of 106hp/270Nm, 126hp/320Nm and 146hp/350Nm. Iveco also offers a 3.0 litre unit in a range of power outputs. Not available on the day was the new generation Hi-Matic 8-Speed automatic gearbox. Developed with ZF, it’s the fi rst eight-speed automatic transmission to be applied to a vehicle range in this class. We opted for the 35S13 H2 panel van as this mid-length, mid-height model is likely to be a popular specification, offering a volume capacity of 10.8 cubic metres. It was fitted with the 126hp engine and loaded to about half the payload capacity of 1420kg.

veco is looking forward to 2015 with some confidence. Not least because of the arrival of the new Daily, International Van of the Year 2015, which promises to firmly shake up the medium-heavy LCV sector.

New appointed Managing Director of Iveco UK & Ireland, Bob Lowden, speaking at Iveco’s annual State of the Nation address near Coventry pointed to positive mainstream indicators including falling oil prices, low interest rates, and a stability in vehicle regulations as signals that 2015 will see growth in the industry. Likewise he believes the brand itself is in good shape, saying “Iveco as a company is fitter, leaner, stronger and more determined than it has ever been. The formation of our parent company - CNH Industrial - some 15 months ago saw to that. It gives us the assuredness and stability that comes from being part of a global industrial brand.” Anticipating an expansion in both the van and truck sectors in the UK of about 15% this year, Mr. Lowden said to Fleet Van & Utility that while he had not yet had the opportunity to look at the Irish market in detail (he returned from his previous position in South Africa just three weeks previously), he expected Iveco to move forward significantly in 2015 under new distributor Emerald Truck & Van, including the appointment of additional sub-dealers.

Entering the cab, first impressions were of a well laid out dash with easily accessed controls and decent amounts of storage facilities. One gripe is the lack of place to put a coat or jacket. Iveco does offer a peg next to the seat belt mounting but realistically there just isn’t room to actually store a jacket there. Space wise, a second passenger can be accommodated fairly comfortably in the middle seat. Getting comfortable, the steering wheel adjusts for tilt but not reach, however I had no problems in finding a suitable driving position. Overall visibility from the driving seat was also good. On the move, the engine and gearbox worked well together with a slick gear change, and strong pulling power from low down the rev range minimising the amount of changes needed. Despite being loaded to half capacity the 126hp engine never felt under any strain. Worth commenting though on the steering which felt overly light and somewhat devoid of feel. Noise levels on the whole were pleasantly muted. That’s to say that at speeds up to 100km/h there was litt le intrusion from engine, road or wind noise. However once we hit the motorway and accelerated up to 120km/h we noticed a significant rise in wind noise in particular, seeming to come from the mirrors. Nothing to get worried about, but it could get annoying if you’re doing a lot of high-speed motorway travelling. That aside, impressions are of a sturdy and robust vehicle well equipped to handle the rigours of van life. With multiple length and height versions offered and two 4x4 versions as well as a CNG model on the way, the new Daily will be a welcome alternative in the 3.5t to 6tonne sectors. Spec Check

The event also afforded the opportunity to test-drive the eagerly anticipated new Daily. Fleet Van & Utility has of course already driven the third generation of the van fi rst produced in 1978, but this was the first opportunity to drive a right hand drive version, and in specifications we will see in Ireland. A cold and frosty morning for our test drive taking in towns, villages, country roads and motorways saw the Iveco crews out bright and early deicing the vehicles and bringing the cabins up to comfortable temperatures.

Dacia Duster 4x4 (Comm)

What more do you need?

D

acia is now well past its ‘new kid on the block stage’, and the Renault owned Romanian brand is capturing market share from the traditional names. Dacia’s range of vehicles is growing with the Logan, Sandero and Sandero Stepway models. Also in the light van segment we have the commercial version of its increasingly popular crossover SUV - the Duster.

First off this is a good looking vehicle well styled and very appealing to the eye. The angular front profile and slightly flared wheel arches and 16” alloys give a muscular presence, and on the road gives Duster an attractive profile. Behind the muscular exterior there is a good sized transport vehicle with an easily accessible cargo area, and carrying capacity of 1,636 dm3 for the 4x2 and 1,604 dm3 for the 4x4. Duster Commercial comes in two models a 4x2 and a 4x4, and two levels of trim, Alternative and Signature. We got our hands on a 4x4 version, which is only available with the higher Signature finish. To say the interior is spartan would be unfair, and that was certainly not the case with the top spec Signature version. What you need, you have, and what you have is functional, it works and appears robust enough to withstand the daily rigours. Though we should mention that the Signature’s leather steering wheel certainly adds a touch of class, and changes the whole sense of the derived van. Duster is powered by Renault’s dCi110 four cylinder diesel which delivers 80kW/109 hp, and is a well proven unit in this category. The 1.5 litre is a touch on the small side for the heavier end of 4x4 work. Though if that is what you need, then Duster or any vehicle in this class is not what you want. As power and torque ratings go, Duster offers an efficient drive with it’s 109 hp and 240 Nm of torque. Stability and road holding are fine, and comfort levels are equal to other car derived light commercials in this segment. All Duster Commercials come with a manual six-speed transmission, and it is a pleasant box to work with. The transmission has a very deep first gear and when loaded light or empty the Duster is comfortable moving away from stopped in second on many occasions. While the gear is deep it is not so deep as to do this everywhere and care must be taken to recognise the opportunities. With the ratios being lower it is possible to quickly move up through the ratios to the long sixth gear. Obviously you are not going to get all the bells and whistles that come with some of the more recognised 4x4 names. One example would be that Duster comes with drum brakes on the rear, although many would prefer drum over discs for off-road driving. Speaking of off-road, while this is not your heavy duty mud-plugger or a military spec vehicle, it is competent and well equipped with good ground clearance, and a wading depth of 350 mm. Added to this Duster 4x4 has approach and departure angles of FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Spring 2015

30° and 36° respectively. All of which will allow Duster to get itself out of most reasonably difficult situations. So for the general 4x4 commercial user around the building site, farm or as a service vehicle, Duster will be more than capable of the task. Another plus is the easy to use rotary control to engage and disengage four wheel drive. We enjoyed our time with Dacia’s Duster and the vehicle generated a lot of passing interest. The comments were all very positive with the most popular remark being “it is good value for money, isn’t it” - and they are right. Often after investing in the better known brand's drivers find themselves trying to justify extravagance - Dacia removes that guilt. The Dacia brand is gaining momentum to the point where a new term will have to be coined for the self-satisfied Duster driver. Its like they know something that we don’t.

BUMBLEance –

an ambulance and more

B

UMBLEance is the world’s first fully interactive and most modern ambulance service for children which provides stress-reducing journeys in a state-of-the-art, safe and fun vehicle. It can best be described as a paediatric intensive care transport unit and transports sick children from all parts of the country. “At BUMBLEance our goal is to make every trip a positive experience and for each child to be as comfortable as possible,” explained Helen Kelly, Development Manager, Saoirse Foundation.

The brainchild of Kerry couple Tony and Mary Heffernan and their Saoirse Foundation, this hugely praiseworthy project grew out of a determination by them to do something that would alleviate some of the stress that children suffer on long ambulance trips. The inspiration for the idea came from their own experience and the stress suffered by their late daughter Saoirse during her frequent transfers from Kerry to Dublin and in whose memory the Foundation is named. Built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis and cab, with body work by Wilkers of Clara, Bumbleance is illustrated outside and inside in cartoonlike ‘bumble bee’ imagery intended to bring a smile to young people’s faces and keep their minds off its serious purpose. This very special ambulance is designed and equipped to the highest medical specification and features a child friendly decorated interior with many unique features. BUMBLEance has everything on-board to eliminate stress including WiFi, the latest PlayStation games, an iPad and relevant Apps along with audio and video equipment on board! Its expert personnel do all they can to make each and every journey happy and safe. "Since its launch in September 2013, demand for the service has been incredible to say the least. To date we have transported over 300 children from all parts of the country with some using the service on a regular basis. We never want to be in a position where we cannot accommodate a sick child. So in order to keep up with the demand our goal is to have a second BUMBLEance (BUMBLEance 2) on the road by the end of March, beginning of April at the latest," stated Helen. “Transporting a sick child can be extremely stressful and usually the logistics of such a trip falls on the shoulders of parents. When you even consider the equipment that may be necessary for such a journey, the child may require oxygen, he or she may need to be peg fed. Can you imagine stopping off at the side of the road in order to change a sick child?” added Helen who continued with examples of the excellent services provided.

BUMBLEance also provides “ANGEL TRIPS”, which is the final journey a sick child and their parents take together on earth before the child grows their Angel Wings. The stress of such a trip is normally left on the shoulders of parents, however with BUMBLEance, this stress is taken away, the parents and the child can concentrate on spending as much quality time together during the child’s remaining days. “BUMBLEance is a free service and we operate at no cost to the families who use it. We do not receive any State assistance or funding from the HSE, so therefore we rely heavily on fundraising events and donations,” stressed Helen. Pick-Up Trucks Premiered at the Detroit Auto Show

ews of 55 red-hot product unveilings on Detroit’s world stage continued to draw attention as some 110,509 thrill-seekers descended on the opening day of the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), writes Fleet Publication's North American correspondent Kathleen M. Mangan. “The impact of a fabulous week of news announcements in Detroit was felt strongly today at Cobo Center,” said Scott LaRiche, Chairman, 2015 NAIAS. “The remarkable products on the floor drew enormous crowds of smiling people. Detroiters love their auto show.” The show floor was packed with enthusiasts who ringed show-stopping, sleek supercars like the Ford GT, Acura NSX and Alpha Romeo 4C Spider. Then there was a plethora of new Pick-Up Trucks launched, with nearly every brand represented. Thousands took selfies, tweeted and posted images from every corner of the active show floor.

“The industry’s in a good place and so is our show,” added LaRiche. “You can feel the energy and positive vibe on the show floor – everyone’s happy and Detroit’s looking good” First day attendance represents an increase of 3,949 guests over the 2014 opener, and was the strongest in six years.
