P
rominent international and national road transport operator Hendrick European has gained further prominence by winning the overall title of Irish Haulier of the Year 2020 in association with Rosslare Europort at the 13th annual Fleet Transport Awards ceremony held at the Citywest Hotel, Dublin on 10 October. The long established Dublin based family owned company, well known for its distinctive red livery on its trucks and trailers, raced to the chequered flag in first
place, impressing the adjudication panel with its ethos, enthusiasm and commitment to the road transport industry. In the lead up to the announcement as the top prize winner on the night by compère RTÉ Radio 1’s Shay Byrne, Hendricks also claimed the coveted International Haulier of the Year 2020 title, sponsored by Thermo King. Commenting on the success on the night, Alan Hendrick, Transport Director at Hendrick European said: “We are absolutely delighted to win this big award and is a credit to all of our team for their hard work and dedication over the years. With these two Fleet Transport Awards, our aim is to continue to provide fi rst in class transport and logistics solutions to all of our customers.”

Among the presentations on the night at the Gala Banquet, attended by over 900 delegates from all sectors of the industr y, were ack nowledgments to a number of companies reaching significant anniversary milestones. The well received tributes were made to: Fiat, Opel, Cummins, Citroën, Caff rey International, West ward Scania, Cunningham Covers, DHL, McCulla Ireland, Goggins Transport, McElvaney Motors, W.S. Dennison, ATC Computer Transport & Logistics Ltd and UKIFDA, formerly FPS.

Scania R450 reigns at Fleet Transport Irish Truck of the Year Awards 2020
T
his year’s Fleet Transport Irish Truck of the Year Awards programme could be compared to the Game of Thrones/SKY TV Series, with so many truck brands claiming to be the ‘King of Westeros’. Sponsored by AIB Finance & Leasing, there were 15 trucks in contention for the ‘Iron Throne’ within the two ‘Kingdom’ categories - Irish Fleet Tractor-Unit of the Year 2020 and Irish Construction Truck of the Year 2020. In the latter category, the Mercedes-Benz Arocs emerged victorious, taking the crown ahead of some serious contenders as the MAN TGS, Renault Range C/K, Iveco Trakker, DAF CF, Volvo FH and Scania XT. Eight tractor-units were nominated for the ‘Fleet Tractor-Unit of the Year Award 2020. Appropriately with the aforementioned Nordic ‘GoT’ theme, a Swedish winner took the laurels in the shape of the Scania R450. This

6x2 tractor-unit not only secured this kingdom’s seat but when it came to the ultimate election, conquered the overall ‘throne’ title of Fleet Transport Irish Truck of the Year 2020. Commenting on the successful 16th running of the annual awards programme, Jarlath Sweeney, Editor, Fleet Transport said, “Following a two-day test drive programme, the 15 trucks in contention were assessed for their individual contribution to road transport efficiency in terms of innovation, comfort, safety, driveability, fuel consumption and emissions reduced. From this exercise, the Scania

R450 6x2 was deemed a deserved winner of the Fleet Transport Irish Truck of the Year 2020.” Commenting on the double award win on the night, Joe Crann, Managing Director, Westward Scania, said: “Winning the Fleet Transport Irish Truck of the Year 2020 and the Fleet Tractor-unit of the Year 2020 with the R450 have brought further recognition for the fantastic Scania products that we are so proud to represent. Our success also comes from the 38% of Irish HGV customers who choose a Scania tractor-unit and increasingly we are being told that a Scania truck is a ‘recruitment tool’ for the top drivers.”

oincidently two German headquartered manufacturers - Mercedes-Benz and SchmitzCargobull scooped the Irish Truck Innovation 2020 Awards at the 13th annual Fleet Transport Awards Gala Dinner on 10th October last at the Citywest Hotel, Dublin. Sponsored by Mike Murphy Insurance, the newly developed Mercedes-Benz MirrorCam has been honoured for its all-round visibility, while the Schmitz Cargobull S.KO COOL V7 integral trailer was recognised on the night, attended by 900 representatives from the Irish transport and logistics industry. The new Mercedes-Benz Actros is the fi rst series production truck in the world to be equipped with the new MirrorCam. Instead of the usual main and wide-angle mirrors, this system works with digital cameras and displays. The cameras are secured on the right and left on the roof frame. The images from the camera are transmitted directly to two displays which are mounted on the A-pillars in the cab. A side effect that increases safety: the driver also has an unhindered view at an angle past the A-pillars thus increasing the driver’s field of vision.
