HSA focus for 2018 is on vehicle risks

The Health & Safety Authority (HSA) continues to be concerned about the high level of injuries being reported as a result of unsafe practices around the use of work-related vehicles. In its execution of Work-related Vehicle Safety Plan (2016 to 2018) into 2018, the Authority will be targeting: • work related vehicle safety issues related to specific vehicle types, • specific high risk vehicle activities, • high risk sectors such as in agriculture, construction, transport, retail and wholesale and manufacturing, • specific work occupations, and • common vehicle safety risks found across all work sectors, for example, driving for work in cars and smaller vehicles such as vans and off road vehicles. This will involve targeted prioritised sector specific interventions and more general interventions common to all work sectors where vehicle risk is prevalent. For example, driving for work is a work activity that most work sectors need to address, whereas higher risk activities such as loading, unloading and load securing are more predominantly found in specific sectors such as transport, construction, manufacturing and retail and wholesale.

eCommerce and new services deliver best ever parcel season for An Post

An Post delivered 1.74 million parcels in the five weeks lead-up to Christmas 2017 - an increase of 27% on the same period last year. This is the highest number of parcels ever delivered by An Post in a Christmas season. A 90%+ next-day delivery rate was achieved and AddressPal proved to be the most popular consumer service. An Post had flagged frenzied Black Friday and Cyber Monday online shopping as a feature of pre-Christ-

mas activity and this held up right through the seasonal boom period. Parcel volumes from key customer Amazon alone showed an increase of more than 30% on 2016. Among the parcel customers featuring heavily in An Post delivery offices over Christmas were Irish brands Arnotts, Brown Thomas, Gifts Direct and Smyths Toys, alongside international brands Zara, H&M and IKEA. An Post secured a greater share of the supply-side parcels market (where the supplier pays) due to an improved service specification which includes Saturday deliveries and later

cut-off times for next-day delivery. The national postal services provider also secured a higher share of the consumer parcels market with the extension of the AddressPal service to include AddressPal USA and a returns service ReturnPal. Mail volumes performed better than expected in December, down by just over 6% in the month (in line with global trends of declining mail volumes). “We saw the growth in Christmas parcel traffic early in play,’’ said Garrett Bridgeman, Managing Director, An Post Mails & Parcels. “We were conscious that this would be an important period for us given the re-launch and re-focus of our parcels business. We had also introduced a range of extra options for customers and these proved both timely and successful.”

HSA 2017 Fatality Statistics There were 47 work related fatal accidents last year compared to 46 in 2016, according to the Health & Safety Authority HSA. Again the majority of the tragic incidents involved farming with 24 deaths, making it the eighth year in a row that the agricultural sector recorded the highest number of work related fatalities. The construction and transport sectors had the next highest number of fatalities with six each. Across all sectors, accidents involving vehicles accounted for 21 of all fatalities in 2017. Falls from height (six) was the next most common cause. Most fatalities (28) involved 18-65 years old males, though there were 14 men over 65 killed in the agriculture sector. Regionally, Dublin, Cork and Mayo were the counties with the highest number of fatalities in 2017, with six each. Of 47 fatalities reported, 18 were self-employed persons, 15 were employees, seven non-workers and seven family workers. Commenting on the year-end figures, HSA Chief Executive, Martin

O’Halloran, said: “Many serious accidents involve vehicles. We have over 2 million people at work and this is a positive development. However, this will lead to increased traffic and movement of vehicles in workplaces, creating hazards that must be managed. Regardless of the sector, where we have people and vehicles moving in close proximity, the danger is elevated. These dangers are greatly reduced when everyone is aware of the hazards and safe systems of work are implemented.” Meanwhile, the Authority wishes to advise that it now considers that the supply and use of semi-automatic quick hitches on excavators is not in compliance with the relevant legislation. The basis for this opinion is related to the requirements of an important harmonised standard that relates to earthmoving machinery. Following a revision to the standard in 2013, EN 474-1 explicitly rules out the use of semi-automatic quick hitches. It

was determined that this design does not meet the essential health and safety requirements of the Directive as it was widely observed that the locking pin was not being used and there had there been a number of fatalities linked to this poor practice. The relevant reference is Amendment A3 in 2013 to EN 474-1 in section B.2.1.3 of Annex B which states: ‘A design with engagement from the operator’s station in combination with locking at the attachment bracket is not permitted.’ Consequently, semi-automatic quick hitches must not be supplied for sale because they are not considered to be compliant with the Machinery Directive. www.handling-network.com

interview

How best to handle bulky loads at height with Juergen Emmenegger, Hyster

As property prices increase, many applications are maximising their storage capacity while minimising costs. Is switching to a narrow aisle warehouse layout a good solution for all applications? “We see many different, demanding applications experiencing a need to increase their available storage in the same warehouse footprint. In a racking application, a typical counterbalance truck can require just over 50% of the building floor space for manoeuvring. Therefore, switching to a narrow aisle configuration supported by a Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) truck, or taking racking higher, can be the most effective solution. Already popular in the grocery sector and retail order picking environments, Hyster VNA trucks and High Level Order Pickers can help to support various applications handling loads within constrained aisle dimensions.” There are clear benefits for palletised goods, but is it possible to handle bigger, bulkier loads with a VNA? “The strong Hyster C1.0 – 1.5L VNA truck series can lift a maximum load of 1.5 tonnes to nearly 17 metres, depending on the model. This truck suits many different applications, but is particularly well suited for those handling difficult loads. In a VNA environment, the operator is up with the load being stored or retrieved, so optimum visibility is provided. This significantly reduces product damage

6

www.handling-network.com

and can improve operational efficiency over ‘man-down’ solutions. Specific Hyster VNA solutions are available for handling products of unconventional shapes and sizes, including larger loads. There are also Hyster VNA machines which have been especially configured for the spirits industry and include a tilt option to enable easy turning of casks during the conditioning phase of storage. A high degree of attachment stability is needed on these trucks as the casks are rolled over the very tip of the forks. Another example is a customer that needs to store mattresses, washing machines, sofas and other large and heavy goods at a height of 10m in their warehouse cube. To support this application, the sturdy Hyster C1.5L VNA Truck has been modified with a walk-on platform and lattice gates on both sides. The lattice gates can be opened a full 2.7 metres giving a two-man team walk-on access to the racking for large items, such as superking size mattresses. The strong mast can handle a 3-metre long metal cage and a load of 800kg in any location on the platform. Even at 10m, the cage moves only minimally, giving the team a stable environment in which to pick and put away stock efficiently.” What other options are available for order picking applications? “The Hyster High Level Order Picker can be similarly customised with a platform to suit the needs of applications that need to lift bulky but light

loads. For example, we currently have a customer using this solution to handle motorbike frames in their warehouse. With an added platform measuring 2.2 metres wide by 2 metres long, the Hyster K1.0H order picker can lift 300kg up to 5 metres, or 500 kg up to 3 metres. The platform also makes handling easier by using perimeter rollers which allow larger items to be dragged onto the machine.” Are there any limitations to consider when going ‘narrow aisle’? “The biggest challenge for any narrow aisle application is always finding ways to lift the load capacity and dimensions to the height required in the available aisle width. Truck width plays a major part in this, as does mast and chassis construction. The patented Quad-Form and Tri-Form mast designs of the Hyster VNA truck require no tie-backs but still provide deflection resistance. This promotes greater residual capacities at height for any given truck width and means applications can achieve handling for the given capacity requirement in a narrower aisle. VNA Trucks can also help overcome space limitations in order-picking applications where aisles are often designed wider to allow two trucks to pass one another. With two lean Hyster VNA machines, aisle dimensions can still be reduced even though multiple trucks are operating in a single aisle. The Hyster VNA truck also delivers a low cost of ownership due to its efficient energy management system which offers a long shift life. In addition to the customisation options for handling bulky loads at height, other benefits can include a touch screen interface, an RFID-based position management and behavioural control system, and rail or wire guidance.” Text: Rob Van Dieten

IFOY Awards

13 Finalists in 5 categories announced for IFOY Awards 2018 Following the first adjudication phase, the International Intralogistics & Forklift Truck of the Year (IFOY) Awards jury have selected thirteen products, solutions, manufacturers and providers for the 2018 awards programme. On 6/7 February, 5 category finalists from the shortlisted contenders which includes BYD, Jungheinrich, Liebherr, J.D. Neuhaus, Still, Gebr, Schulte, Wegard and Witron will go forward to compete in the second round at the IFOY test days in Hannover, Germany undertaken by the 26-member judging panel, which includes Fleet Transport/Handling Network magazines.

“What is special about the IFOY test series is that the finalists are not compared to each other, yet their competitors’ devices are on the market. Only those who surpass their direct competitors in terms of innovation are among the best in the world,” explained Anita Würmser, Chairperson of the IFOY jury. “Jurors from all over the world travel to Hannover to test the nominated devices themselves. Among other things, the IFOY Award assesses innovative quality, technology, design, ergonomics, handling, safety, cost effectiveness and sustainability.” The winners will be chosen by the jury made up of a panel of renowned trade journalists from leading logistics media in 18 countries around the globe. The trophies will be awarded on the opening night of the world’s leading intralogistics trade fair CeMAT in Hannover in April.

IFOY Awards 2018 – Shortlist Counter Balanced Truck category – BYD and Still The BYD ECB50C with a load capacity of five tonnes, launched in

10

www.handling-network.com

December, has been nominated. The powerful electric forklift truck provides six hours of continuous operation and can be fully charged in just three hours. With the ECB50C, the Chinese manufacturer is competing against powerful diesel and gas models, especially when used outdoors.

The brand new Still RX 20 electric forklift with a capacity of 1.6 tonnes is the second nomination in this category. The agile and fast all-rounder for indoor and outdoor uses can be operated for the first time with either batteries of the A or B circuit. The concept combines high handling capacity with precision, good climbing ability on ramps and an ergonomic workplace. Warehouse Truck category – Jungheinrich, Still and Wegard

Jungheinrich received two nominations in the Warehouse Truck category. The further developed ECE 225 easyPILOT Follow will take part in the test. Using the newly developed remote-control option, which can be retrofitted for all ECE models, the

2.5 tonne order picker automatically follows its operator to the next picking station. Radio technology is used for a 100 percent reliable connection between vehicle and operator. The leading German manufacturer is also nominated for the high-power tow tractor EZS 7280. The special model, which is available since November, was developed for heavy-duty outdoor use at airports, industry or logistics. It offers a towing capacity of 28 tonnes and sets a new benchmark for electric sit-on tractors. The new alternative to combustion engines achieves a speed of 25 km/h and is particularly strong when driving on ramps. Another nomination goes to the Still OPX-L 16 horizontal order picker introduced in December. The flagship of the new and versatile OPX order picker series has a rated load capacity of 2.5 tonnes and sets a new benchmark in terms of ergonomics. The comfortable all-rounder is designed for maximum performance in the tightest working environments and over long distances.

The fourth nomination in the Warehouse Truck category goes to the modular tugger train of the Hamburgbased start-up Wegard. “Wegard Trail” tugger train trolleys are the world’s first to utilize an autonomous electronic steering. It can therefore be combined with different trolley types to meet specific requirements and does not require a special tractor. For the first time, driving manoeuvres such as sideways parking, precise positioning and reverse driving are also possible. J.D. Neuhaus and Liebherr nominated for Crane & Lifting Appliance There are two nominations at the inaugural Crane and Lifting Appliance category.

spring 2018

IFOY Awards With the 500-mini air hoist, J.D. Neuhaus has won a nomination for its world premiere. The compact allrounder, developed in close cooperation with customers, provides load capacities of 125 to 980 kilograms and is suitable for all applications. It is designed for maximum efficiency due to its considerably higher pneumatic power density and its 100% duty cycle. For the first time in the industry, the JDN 500 mini also features an integrated NFC (Near Field Communication) sensor with service app.

The other nomination goes to Liebherr’s MK 140 electric mobile construction crane. The 5-axle model with VarioJib and set-up status detection is only 15.97 metres long and is the first handling crane to combine the trolley mode for maximum handing operation, and the luffing mode for special operations. This crane set-up achieves lifting heights of up to 94 metres and outreaches of up to 65 metres, which have so far only been achieved with much larger machines and an enormous amount of set-up work. Special of the Year finalists – Jungheinrich, Gebr, Schulte and Still

Three brands qualify for this year’s Special of the Year category. Jungheinrich claims its fourth nomination for the cross-technology battery charging system SLH300. It is

particularly suitable for mixed fleets or companies planning to switch their fleet from conventional lead-acid to more efficient lithium-ion technology. The SLH300 enables charging of both technologies with only one device.

The MULTIplus shelves from Schulte Lagertechnik is another finalist. Despite edge heights of only 25 to 40 millimetres, the shelves can support shelf loads from 85 to 330 kgs. The new MULTIplus150, which has been specially developed for e-commerce warehouses, is the first shelf that carries 150 kgs with a shelf width of 1,500 mm and an edge height of only 25 mm.

Still entered the IFOY 2018 competition with the EASY Drive steering wheel developed for the OPX horizontal order picker. Behind this is a new operating concept for warehouse equipment. Instead of the classic tiller steering system, a car-like steering wheel is used, which allows all hydraulic functions to be operated simultaneously without having to change gear. Integrated Warehouse Solution category - Jungheinrich and Witron In the supreme discipline of Integrated Warehouse Solution, two suppliers were nominated. As the general contractor for technical solutions, Jungheinrich completed the expansion of the Keller & Kalmbach central warehouse by the end of 2016. For the C-parts management specialist, the high-bay warehouse (HBW) was extended from five to ten aisles and a further 37,450 pallet storage spaces without inter-

rupting operations for a single day. The originally two-aisle automatic small parts warehouse (ASPW) was expanded by six aisles for a total of 155,000 cartons. The construction of a new tray warehouse for 15,000 customised trays was also added. Today, about 150 tonnes of goods, with approximately 10,000 pick-items in cartons, small load carriers or open fronted storage bins, reach Keller & Kalmbach’s customers through the outgoing goods department every day. This means that not only did the available storage and logistics space increase from 10,000 m2 to 18,500 m2, but the overall plant performance doubled.

Witron Logistik + Informatick GmbH was shortlisted for the Migros Distribution Center Suhr AG in Switzerland. Witron has succeeded in merging the small volume order picking systems of Swiss firm Migrolino AG with Migros branch business. Today, the omnichannel logistics center supplies more than 300,000 retail units to more than 600 Migros branches and more than 118,000 pick units to Migrolino shops at petrol or railway stations on a peak day. In particular, the picking performance was increased by a factor of 3 compared to a manual warehouse. In addition, an increase in volume of 9 to 20 million picks per year shall be taken into account in the coming years. As a result, the logistics system integrator has automated the previously manual Migrolino logistics in a two level, 14,000 square metres warehouse with ongoing operation in such a way that both areas support each other. Buyers’ A-Z Guide Forklift 2018

An A-Z Listing of forklift brands available to buyers in the Republic of Ireland Compiled by Paul White

2018 The Handling Network Forklift Buyers Guide 2018 provides an A-Z of the latest handling equipment options available in Ireland, and the companies appointed to provide the equipment service and support. It also provides a snapshot of the current state of the sector and indicates some of the trends we can expect in the coming year. Year on year there is a move towards automated systems, and all OEMs are investing in research and development in this area. Although this trend may not be an issue of great importance immediately to companies in Ireland, it is of immense interest to companies in Europe and throughout the world who operate vast purpose-built warehouses and see the efficiencies such systems could bring. These are the companies who also are having to contend with what appears to be a shrinking skilled workforce. The guide is not exhaustive as new products are being constantly launched featuring ever more sophisticated devices and systems. Nevertheless it does highlight what options are currently available and aims to help operators make a more informed choice.

Construction of new Combilift and Aisle-Master Factory nears completion

This photo above shows the extent of the new Combilift & Aisle-Master forklift and warehousing equipment manufacturing facility under construction. Located near Monaghan town, the new 46,000 sq.m plant being built on a 100-acre site is on target for completion by the end of April 2018. The €46 million investment will provide much scope for expansion and increased efficiencies, such as doubling production levels and introducing new products. “In order to keep up with the global demand for our wide range of products, the construction of a new €46 million, 46,000m2 manufacturing facility and global headquarters is underway. This green field site is situated near our two original factories in Monaghan. This will enable us to achieve our goal to significantly increase our yearly output and to double our current turnover over the next five years,” stated Martin McVicar, Managing Director, Combilift/ Aisle-Master. Established by Martin McVicar and Robert Moffett (Technical Director) in 1988, these two engineers who served their time with the Moffett family-run engineering business, decided to pool their wealth of experience and expertise to design the world’s first Internal Combustion (IC) engine powered all-wheel-drive, multi-directional forklift, the Combilift. As the company enters its 20th year in production, there are more than 30,000 multi-directional Combilift forklifts in operation across 75 countries around the world. Up to 2008, the main customer focus was on the construction industry with average sales at 2,000 units. The downturn which followed required a refocus, with a look to the logistics and warehousing sectors. With unit sales centring around 1,500 during 2009 and 2010,

business picked up with total sales reaching 4,450 by the end of 2016. That overall future was helped in no small way by the ten-fold increase in Aisle-Master sales since 2010. In excess of 5,000 Combilift units were produced for customers in 2017.

Currently a workforce of 450 employees look after the design, development, fabrication, assembly and final dispatch of its machines to market destinations all over the world. Combilift does a lot more than design, build and market/service forklifts. Through a team of highly trained personnel, it provides complete logistic and warehouse solution packages with a free, no obligation consultation warehouse layout design and logistics audit. Based on plans and ideas supplied, latest 3-D CAD design technology brings the concept to virtual life, maximising capacity potential as well as ensuring efficient flow of materials in the new or existing facility. Continuous revenue investment in Research & Development to the tune of 7 percent of annual turnover keeps the company at the forefront of innovative product developments. One of the secrets of Combilift’s success is the ongoing process of listening to customers and modifying the product accordingly to meet their specific operational requirements. operators look to the return on the initial investment aligned to increasing efficiencies at their deport/warehouse. During the visit to the Combilift headquarters in Gallinagh in Monaghan town, Nigel Roberts and Allen Roberts, Representatives from Kingspan’s’ Insulated Panels division at its Energi Centre in Holywell, North Wales, along with Kevin Smith, Combilift Sales & Service Agent for Briggs Equipment UK, were having a round table discussion with Martin McVicar, Combilift, MD. A customer for over twelve years standing, Kingspan operates 150 Combilifts with more on order over the next two quarters of 2018. In the past decade, the weight capacity of its multi-directional all-wheel-drive forklifts has been modified to include 5 to 8 to 12 to 14 tonnes in order to meet load/unloading requirements. Nowadays, raw coils which come in 25 m wide rolls must be handled. Martin listened attentively on an issue regarding excessive tyre wear on one side, particularly Allen’s suggestion on

a solution. The specification drawings were then looked at intensively to see how the modification can be done. All agreed and were satisfied with the agreed decision. The outcome is that the next batch of order will have this alteration. At the outset Martin explained the merits of the highly manoeuvrable, safe and cost-effective machine that is a combination of forklift and side loader. “Our tried and tested range meets the needs of thousands of warehouse applications and ensures productivi-

ty and operator efficiency gains that deliver real results.” Martin praised the sales success and excellent aftermarket back-up provided by Briggs Equipment Ltd. With a guaranteed response time of three hours, GPS tracking on its mobile service units allows the closest engineer to be dispatched to the breakdown, notified by the customer through its 24/7 Emergency Call Out response system. A 3-hour repair response time is assured and overnight delivery of parts to all of its nationwide engineers ensures that downtime is minimised, allied to a 96 percent first fix guarantee. Kevin Smith mentioned that over 500 Combilifts have been sold by Briggs Equipment Ltd during 2017. Other high-profile customers for both Combilift and Aisle-Master products include Lakeland Dairies, O’Brien Fine Foods, Glanbia and Bulmers. “We recognise our success is in no small part down to the support of our extensive and ever-growing network of partners and dealerships around the globe,” acknowledged Martin. Robert Moffett added; “These are all experts in their field, chosen because they share our passion and enthusiasm for customer service, from identifying the right products for the task in hand through to unrivalled levels of aftersales care and maintenance.” Product Range From the entry level 25 tonne C2500 model to the massive C25000 25 tonner, the Combilift C-series offers a broad range of forklifts models and weight capacities with multi-directional capability facilitating sideways travel/transport with long loads. Combi C-series can negotiate tight corners with ease, passing through doorways

and manoeuvre safely around obstacles. Initially, the C4000 became the game changer when launched in 1998 as this original C-series model immediately impressed customers with its forwards, backwards and sideways movements, and with its IC engine changed the face of materials handing at an unrivalled pace in the industry. Safety in movement is the big issue of concern in the minds of the Combilift design engineers, especially when transporting long, heavy and potentially dangerous loads such as steel beams. The C-series range features integrated platforms with a low centre of gravity which provides a very stable base, with a moving mast system that extends to lift the load and retracts to allow the product rest on the platform.

Being more compact than a traditional counterbalance truck, the Combi-CB can handle standard pallets as well as long loads, thereby is ideal for indoor and outdoor operations. Lift capacities of 2.5 tonnes to 4.0 tonnes are now available with a choice of LP gas, diesel or electric. Making short work of long loads was the theme behind the development of the Combi-SL range which includes multidirectional three-wheeled sideloaders and two directional four-wheeled

models. The former has 4t/5t and 6t capacities. When warehouse space is at a premium, the Combi-ST/GT, with its tight cab dimensions enables operation in extremely narrow aisles. Meanwhile the Combi-AM VNA articulated truck line-up saves space and increases productivity with its up to 2.5 tonne, 15 metre high lifting capacity. The smallest

model in the Combilift range is the Combi-WR Walkie Reach stacker with a lift capacity of almost 1,500 kg. Visually, probably the most striking Combilift product line is its Straddle Carrier Combi-SC – the cost effective and flexible container handler that can set down 20’/30’/40’/45’ high cube containers, reefers and flat rack containers with a multimodal option. Oversized and bulk cargo can also be accommodated. Then there’s the remote control multidirectional mobile gantry (Combi-MG) which comes with 6 steering functions as standard. For tough or rough conditions the Combi-RT caters for this type of terrain thanks to its low profile, 3 stage mast with full free left and all-wheel traction. Combilift’s sister company AisleMaster has built up over 50 years’ experience in developing robust VNA (Very Narrow Aisle) articulated forklifts. Each model with lift heights of up to 15 m powered by either gas or electric comes with a 5-year, 5,000-hour factory backed warranty as standard. Text: Jarlath Sweeney www.handling-network.com

finance

Bank Borrowing for Warehousing

Warehousing and Logistics is a capital intensive industry that relies heavily on Bank support re long term borrowing for investment in buildings and land that may be specific to customer needs and customer location. Since the recession, financial institutions have been very slow and wary to lend for land or buildings, and when they do the term of loans are shorter and the percentage of equity in a deal is now 30% to 35% - minimum. Unless you have a strong Balance Sheet and are cash rich, expansion can be near impossible. Banks will finance equipment such as racking and handling equipment relatively easily, but shy away from any longer term investment. This leaves a big gap in the market for companies that can profitably expand but are restricted by lack of funds. While there appears to be plenty of vacant good value warehousing for sale, location and type of building may rule purchase out, and while the cost of build versus purchase still appears out of sync, a building’s value is determined by its profitable use. The type of building and location are crucial factors in this computation. When approaching banks for long term borrowing, the standard debt to equity ratio is 65% debt/35% equity. Of

course you can leverage against current assets if there is unencumbered equity in them. The other limiting factor is a maximum repayment period of 15 years, a very short period if it’s a site and high grade warehouse that is being constructed. If you are attempting to get bank support for such investment, the days of approval based on limited information and the hope that a rising property value would lift any poor borrowing decision out of trouble are long gone. Getting financial approval for loans now rests with credit committees that are at arm’s length from the borrowing. These are faceless individuals that do not know or care that you hold four All-Ireland medals or that you are a legend of Munster Rugby in the past. Firstly you must provide your Business Banking Manager with detailed Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow projections for 3 to 5 years ahead. You review the requirement for borrowing, and provide independent bank approved valuations on what will be constructed. Your Business Banking Manager must understand and see the commercial benefit of the project first, as they will be through whom the application is presented to the credit committee. You also have to look at scenarios where building costs or volumes

increase and the projected revenues do not materialise. In the case of risk analysis a number of questions arise: What experience and contracts are in place to guarantee revenue? What are the risks associated with the industry sector you are working in? What factors will affect this industry into the future? The expertise of the management team, the level and timeliness of financial data such as monthly management accounts, and the track record of the business owners are all important factors in building confidence and respect from the business managers who now have to put their necks on the line regarding a sound base for a loan decision. The fact that banks have a new policy on how to lend, the fact that this is reviewed and checked by an external body means that while gaining funding is more difficult, it limits new entrants to your sector and also should allow a margin from your hard work and business risk. Following the ‘Celtic Tiger Crash’, the blatant shortfalls in bank lending became apparent. Very often even Senior Bank Officials had little or no business or accounting knowledge. Know now that you are dealing with staff that have up-skilled, with many having been recruited from business or accountancy practices and with real world understanding of how your business works. Banks are also using sector specialists who can cut to the chase in looking at key assumptions and correct analysis of actual business risk.

supply chain

“Know your Supply Chain better than anyone else”

In wrapping up his presentation at the final Irish Exporters Association (IEA) Supply Chain nationwide series for 2017, Graeme Treadwell, Head of Supply Chain at Castlebellinghambased Standard Brands made a plea to exporters. He said that to succeed in developing new markets for their products, they should know their Supply Chain better than anyone else. For Graeme, as is the case in many businesses, there are two main Supply Chains, one for importing product and raw materials from overseas sources, and another for export of completed products to customers outside Ireland. Due to the hazardous nature of many of the materials used and of the finished products of Standard Brands, which include ZIP Firelighters, a high level of expertise is required in the choice of transport modes, and of providing documentation to support export and to enable product to be cleared into the customer’s marketplace. Taking control was also a dominant theme in Sean Brogan’s presentation on behalf of Brogan’s Bakery. The County Galway native came to the management of this family-run Dublinbased operation after a long career with the Stobart Group. One major factor in the rapid growth of the bakery has been its association with Ornua, previously An Bord Bainne, which has led to a branding of the company’s shortbread under the Kerrygold label. In doing this the bakery has achieved rapid growth in the markets already developed by Ornua, and as a result has become a major user of the butter product. The bakery has also had considerable success with Aer Lingus and other airlines in getting product onto the inflight menus. Brogan went on to tell the meeting about the need to keep innovating new products and seeking out new

markets, always adapting the product to the tastes and other requirements of the markets concerned. A crucial factor is the availability of a Supply Chain to each market, and an ability to understand the requirements of the customers adapting the Supply Chain to fit their needs. As he had done at previous events in this series, Simon Barry, Chief Economist at Ulster Bank which was the main sponsor of the Supply Chain event series, as well as hosting the Dublin meeting, spoke about the rapid growth of the Irish economy. A likely 2017 out-turn of a growth of 5.5% has been led by a growth in exports of 7% and a jobs growth of 3%, with over half of the new jobs being located outside the Greater Dublin Area. The export growth has taken place in the face of a drop of 17% of the trade weighted value of sterling against the euro. A major indicator of the stress that BREXIT is already inflicting on the British economy is the fact that retail sales growth in 2017 has increased by only 1% and not the 6% that had been forecast at the start of the year. John O’Leary, who is Head of e-Customs at the Revenue Commissioners spoke of the Trade Facilitation aspects of BREXIT. It will cause considerable disruption and traders are recommended to secure Trusted Trader Status based on being an Authorised Economic Operator (AEO). Securing this takes some time so traders should start now to be ready for BREXIT. Traders should also look into issues around simplified declarations, advanced rulings of tariffs and duties, temporary

storage issues, etc. For goods currently requiring Customs Clearance and other controls, current clearance time is approximately 30 seconds. For a fully qualified trader using a known Supply Chain, it should be possible to achieve a similar time in future, despite the massive growth in volumes under clearance that BREXIT will bring. Declan Sinnott, Managing Director of Rhenus Logistics Ireland, also one of the series’ sponsors, delivered a message aimed at SME’s in particular, namely that they should work with their forwarder/carrier to consolidate their cargo with that of other shippers and secure keener rates for door-todoor transport. In researching new markets, exporters should make full use of the global resources of their forwarder. The IEA Supply Chain series will continue through 2018 with a wider range of events and training sessions held at venues throughout Ireland aimed at preparing exporters for the challenges that BREXIT will bring.
