Editorial Cover july - august During the photoshoot, we had a slight hick-up. Our model didn’t show up! Luckily, my team and I perform well under difficult circumstances and with our thinking caps on, we came up with the best ideas!

The FleuraMetz app has been given a touch of magic by FlowerTales.

It’s going to be a very hot summer with only one thing that is truly important; simplicity. To switch off from the digital world and just focus on what is around us. A period without any special flower holidays and with many people on vacation. The flipside: the ultimate excuse to deck out and make over the top bouquets or learn new techniques. Use this summer to try different new things! I tried it too. How do you benefit from your summer? Share your cool (pun intended) ideas with me! I would love to see your new inventions and designs. Email them to info@flowertales.com It’s important to take time for trying new things. Summer is just perfect for this. These months also call for simplicity at home as we are spending most of our time outdoor anyway! Put the flowers outside and create more peace at home. The less you have to mind, the better. That is also why the packages in this edition do not include quirky sundries, such as birds or butterflies. What you will find is a beautiful base, carefully selected by my amazing team. In this magazine, I will tell you more about the use of colour and materials in the different packages, share a refreshing DIY and an enchanted story about a rainbow!

Enjoy this issue! Love,

The peculiarity of Umami is still here for the summer but we can already see more earthy elements rising to the surface. These elements bridge the gap to autumn where Umami will be receiving a natural look. This edition, it still includes lots of dyed and waxed flowers and plants making it an extraordinary combination that is rich in contrast.

Freesia Brownies, lisianthus Rosanne Deep Brown, Dianthus Crazy Horse, germini Roasted, Rose High Society and Polygonum. Brown sets the tone, naturally or dyed.

This summer, you will find flowers in different shades of brown in Umami. The sound of it alone, doesn’t make it particularly appealing. Brown is featured multiple times in this colour palette. Quite a selection of flowers are naturally brown. Therefore, it is not a crazy colour to sell if you think about it. Quite the opposite, it is a wonderful colour as brown goes with virtually anything! It might even be the ultimate colour for mixing different styles together. Despite the fact that it is a common colour in nature and tones well others, brown flowers remain excentric and extraordinary. Let that be exactly what the Umami look is aiming for.

Little plants, which look like stones or react to touch: Mother Nature is a goddess in handing out exceptional features and properties. No modern technology can beat that. Lithops are for those, who like convenience, the sensitive plant requires more care. This plant can feel it when you move it or turn it around even. However, let the temperature drop below 18 degrees and the leaves won’t react to your touch anymore. See it as your real-life Tamagotchi, you will be rewarded when you look after it and follow all the care instructions. The sensitive plant will grow and eventually come to flower!

These glass containers look like eggs from an alien species. Fill them with a plant or small bouquet. Keep the latter straight up with a stick and a bit of cling foil.

Attention FLOWER OF THE MONTH In The Netherlands, Bouvardias played the lead in the tv show Farmer Wants a Wife. The flower gave colour to the programme! Who will be starring in your designs?

MORE JULY ‘19 The first month of summer vacation is when things start to quiet down. The speed is getting slower in town, the city centre or at the office. You really have the time to focus on something else, dive into a different subject or create something new. In the meantime, let this magazine inspire you.

Life is short, buy the flowers

PLANT OF THE MONTH

Look for the Guzmania, anthurium, cactus and Celosia in the packages and create an exotic outdoor presentation! Do a plant deal for all those sweet and caring neighbours as they will be the ones looking after everything when it’s time to break for the summer.

My life is a fairytale, that’s why this is my most favourite day of the year! The fairytale I could never get enough of when I was young, was the Frog King. Yet, I wouldn’t recommend trying to find true love in frogs.

Rainbow

Colour of the month This is a very special colour, should I explain each individual shade? No, I’d rather tell you more about the origin of the colours. Where does that happiness come from that can give you colour? How can you make these colours visible?

A rainbow is a bridge between heaven and earth. A place where the visible world melts into the invisible, magical and supernatural world. Let me step away from the spiritual talk. A rainbow becomes naturally visible when the sun comes out after rain. It is caused by sunlight being refracted when entering a droplet of water making the individual colours visible to the human eye. It may seem miraculous but it is pure science.

Rainbow

Light There is a difference between the colours of my crayons and the colours that are caused by light (the rainbow). The colours are best visible when you mix them. Colours of a rainbow become white, while my crayons mix into a unidentified brown shade. Just like me, Isaac Newton was also obessed by light and colour. He observed how light can be refracted using a small ray of light and a glass prism. When light is not refracted, people observe white. When it is refracted, or missing an element, we see colour. The colours of the flowers are affected by how we observe colour. Therefore, light plays a key role in how colour is perceived. Sales tip How is the lighting in your shop? Is there enough light to let the colours of flowers look their best? Look at where the lights are put in the shop. Is there a dark spot? What does that do to the products you are trying to sell? My team always work with daylight. It is the best way to present flowers and plants. Therefore, try to recreate natural light in your shop. The colour of the light is also known as the colour temperature. The colour of your flowers stand or fall with the colour temperature of your shop.

This package has it all. Dyed flowers, dried flowers but also natural materials. It is a grand mix of shiny materials and earthy colours. It makes this theme look absolutely luxurious. This package’s signature is basic and it will stay basic in autumn. Key is to create unison, all the different elements must blend in.

Asclepias Ice Ballet

Despite the name, it looks amazing in sunny flower arrangements as a cut flower. However, you also see it a lot planted in flower beds. Have you ever looked at it up close? It looks like a dance of ice crystals from the top. Lucky for us, they don’t melt.

Shine combined with earth tones; you will see this a lot in the sundries. The set of baskets look robust and country. What do you think of the hydrangea with gold gyp? The pearl coloured glass brings the shine factor in this package together with the velvet plant bags. Have you noticed the concrete style pots on foot? They suit a modern as well as a country style interior.

16 FlowerTales July – August ‘19

A lot of thought always go into the setting of the pictures. This also applies to the selection of a house for an onsite photography. This summer is all about simplicity. As you spend most of your time outdoors or on vacation, it is nice to keep your home and garden simple. Choose a specific colour palette or stick to just two or three types of materials. By choosing peace, you will have more room to create new things and put these in the spotlight.

Orange you glad it’s summer?

What do you do when there are no customers in the shop during summer? Twiddle your thumbs, check Facebook for the millionth time that day or close the shop? Don’t! Use the spare time to simply create or try out that new technique you have been reading up on. New inspiration usually comes from doing!

SHOPPING LIST Coloured paper covered wire 2mm Dried orange slices Bamboo sticks 30cm Vase Selection of summer flowers

1 Condition the flowers and cut them at different lengths. Thread an orange slices on some of the flower stems.

2 Fill the vase with water and set aside. 3 Thread a few orange slices on a bamboo stick. Make 2 more sticks in the same way.

4 Lay the 3 sticks next to each other on the bench. 5 Connect the 3 sticks by weaving another 3 plain sticks across them creating a frame-like structure.

6 Tie the whole together in a playful and easy way with the paper covered

wire. Squeeze the wire together where you feel more support is needed. Do not cut the ends off yet.

7 Put the orange frame onto the vase and hold it with one hand. 8 Stick the flowers through the frame in the vase. Also put flowers along the side of the vase opening to make the frame stay in place.

9 If you find that some of the bamboo sticks are too long, just cut them to size.

10 Finish by bending some of the paper covered wire around the flower stems and cut the wire. .

Red, white and blue are the national colours of different countries, such as Croatia, France, Russia and Serbia. This package has them all and even includes a small reference to the famous Delft Blue from The Netherlands. The vases by Fidrio are just sensational! As always, Urban Tane is rich in colour and material. Red is the colour of Urban Tane this summer. Seen in different shades and in different flowers. Red is also a key colour in the plants and sundries this edition.

During the photoshoot, we thought that this rose was called ‘Blush’. It is white on the outside and red on the inside like the pink cheeks on Dutch children. We were wrong, the rose is actually called Bluez+. We were also blue for a moment.

Exotic is intriguing. But now that we know that all those extra miles in getting these products in are harmful to the environment, I think it’s good to choose for local products more often. Flowers that grow according to nature’s schedule and haven’t travelled an excess amount of miles in their journey to you… Doesn’t that bring a smile to your face?

22 FlowerTales July – August ‘19

FLOWERS IN Passionate red and primary blue are mixed with pastel shades making Urban Tane a power package. Summer flowers, such as Gladioli and Delphiniums, Lovein-a-mist, Limonium, Dahlia and Daucus Dara. Put them together and you have yourself a real power mix.

Harvest

MORE AUGUST ‘19 August, the harvest month. And the month where it is very hot in some places. Well, in Europe that is. Most people are away or have just returned from their holiday. I like to think of August as the beginning of a new year. A new period that we head into with renewed energy and inspiration. Where we are able to do some work in advance or discover new resolutions.

FLOWER OF THE MONTH Chrysanthemums are available in so many different varieties and colour, it can only be an over-the-top month! They are also sturdy, which is a welcome benefit as the temperature continues to rise.

PLANT OF THE MONTH

No hassle this month. Shut the door behind you and go… Easy care plants, such as Crassula and Echeveria will gratefully continue to grow. There is nothing to worry about.

The start of summer Creative summer 27

My favourite this summer! It’s so colourful, exuberant and full of possibilities. This package is composed of 6 different sets! The options are unlimited. We have divided the colour palette into 3 different categories. Bright Vivid is the perfect example of how a trend comes to life.

If nothing ever changed there’d be no butterflies

Do these flower petals remind you of butterflies too? The colour is so striking and happy.

FLOWERS IN Take a colourful rose mix as your base and start adding other flowers to it, such as Sunflowers, Delphiniums, germinis, Hydrangeas and peonies. Crocosmia berries give you that liberating outdoor feeling!

Here you see three different settings that are put together with the Bright Vivid colour palette as base. The combination of the colours alone already gives you great variety! Have you ever tried to make three completely different designs from one colour palette? I challenge you! This package is not just for indoor. The baskets and balcony pots are also great for outside. They allow you to enjoy summer happiness outdoor.

30 FlowerTales July – August ‘19

In some cases, creativity also means giving used materials a second life. Who would have expected to see different colours cache pots in FlowerTales? Or dried orange and lemon slices? There is a time for everything including a comeback! Give two identical vases different collars of cache pots for an instant summer look. Tip: Put two slices of citrus in the water between the flower stems for an extra floral, lemonade effect. Is there still room for roses in a season where you can choose from a wide selection of summer flowers? It’s always time to rose and it remains the best-selling flower throughout the year! How amazing it is to have a rose mix, which is specially selected to tone in with summer flowers. Find Glances of Summer by Decofresh in the FleuraMetz web shop.
