CRANBERRY GARLANDS

OLD WORLD CHARM

Cranberries are entwined with Wisconsin life nearly as much as cheese. Growing up I remember going to Cranberry Fest, having cranberry slush at Holiday time & cranberry flavored everything. Whether you enjoy their tart bitterness or you don't, you can't deny their beautiful color & holiday spirit they bring. Making cranberry garlands for wreaths & centerpieces has been a tradition I resurrected in my family since I started my floral art journey 17 years ago. They are so easy to make, inexpensive, and create an old world charm to nearly anything!

ILEX BERRY STRANDS Page 14

Ilex berries love to jump ship from their branches as they age leaving a lot of abandoned berries in the bottom of their bucket/box. I've used them as vase fill before but just like cranberries they float when in water. This year I wanted to try making ilex berry strands to see if they could be used in another way we don't normally see. To my surprise they actually string quite well and will even dry over time on the string. Although a little tedious, I am completely in love with how adorable they turned out!

HARVESTING BIRCH BARK I am very fortunate to have access to land where I can harvest my own birch bark. I miss being able to access it year round since I moved to Texas so I always stock up when I'm visiting family back in Wisconsin. When harvesting birch bark there are some things to take into consideration when harvesting. #1 Always have permission Be respectful of property and harvest where you have permission to be. You don't want to be fined or have the cops called on you just for some tree bark. Page 18

#2 Leave Live Trees Alone Birch Trees do not like their bark to be stripped when they're alive and doing so almost always results in the tree dying. The bark on a living tree is also very difficult to remove and will only come off in small peals. #3 Fallen logs are your friend Harvest exclusively from logs, trees, & branches that have already fallen or died. The bark starts to release from the wood naturally and can be easily removed in larger pieces.

#4 Don't be greedy Never take more than 1/3 of what you find. You want to leave some for nature & some for others. Over harvesting anything can damage the ecosystem. Just because something is pretty doesn't mean we have exclusivity on taking it. Birch trees generally grow in "families" just walk around a little more and you'll usually find older fallen trees (or remnants of them) near by. The wood decomposes before the bark does and you may find bark just laying there on the ground!

#5 Honor Nature Keep your energy clean. Always show gratitude to nature, the animals, the trees & the land when you harvest.

ABOUT THE COVER

Northwoods Centerpiece I designed this piece with a simple armature made from birch branches & bark. The armature was fit around the candles and placed into a glass dish. The dish allows for a water source for the evergreens & ilex berries to drink without the need for foam. The armature acts as a grid to keep botanical stylings in place. Water is added every few days to keep the design fresh for a few weeks during this holiday season. -Shawn Michael Foley

SALVAGING YOUR GHOSTS OF CHRISTMAS PAST

UN-MAKING A WREATH

Page 40

Salvage Your Ghosts of Christmas Past This wreath is officially one year old and is now on its last leg. Instead of just throwing it out I'm going to un-make it and salvage as much as I can. When you're making your designs think about sustainability beyond one season. What can you pull out to re-use over and over again? In this tutorial you'll find that I was able to salvage nearly all of the components in this wreath for other projects!
