LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Members of the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce,

As we usher in the holiday season, I want to take a moment to celebrate the uniqueness and spirit of our Flagstaff business community. Each of you—whether operating a cozy coffee shop, a boutique store, or a tech firm—adds to the rich, vibrant tapestry of Flagstaff. Our local businesses are more than just places to shop or dine; they are gathering spaces, they are supporters of our community events, and they are contributors to the unique, small-town charm that makes Flagstaff so special.

One of the best ways we can show support for our local businesses is through our shopping choices, especially during this holiday season. When you shop locally, you’re not only purchasing goods or services; you’re investing in your neighbors and friends. Local businesses employ our family members, friends, and community members and support our schools, events, and nonprofits. Every dollar spent locally is recirculated within our economy, which strengthens our community and helps create a thriving, sustainable Flagstaff. This holiday season, let’s make it a priority to choose Flagstaff first and recognize the positive impact we have when we support local.

In addition to shopping locally, we have another fantastic opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate the season. I invite you all to join us for the annual Desert Financial Holiday Lights Parade! This beloved tradition has become a highlight of our holiday celebrations, and it’s a wonderful way for businesses, families, and friends to come together in the heart of downtown. The parade features creative, brightly lit floats and performers, and it brings out the holiday cheer in everyone who attends. It’s not only a fun event, but also an opportunity for local businesses to showcase their festive spirit and connect with the community. Make sure to join us and share in the joy of this Flagstaff tradition.

As we look forward to a new year, I want to express my deepest gratitude to each of you. It’s your dedication,

passion, and commitment to Flagstaff that make our Chamber strong and our community a wonderful place to live, work, and play. I am continually inspired by the resilience and innovation I see in our members investors and I am honored to work alongside each of you as we support our community’s growth.

CHAMBER HAPPENINGS

2025 Annual Meeting & Award Ceremony Announced

The 35th Annual ATHENA Awards and Annual Meeting—a premier event bringing together over 550 community business leaders—will take place on February 21 at the High Country Conference Center. During the event’s luncheon, attendees will receive valuable economic updates and learn about upcoming Chamber initiatives from President & CEO Julie Pastrick. The program will also include the traditional passing of the gavel to the incoming board chair and honor the outstanding contributions of the Chamber’s dedicated volunteers.

Awards presented at the event include the Flagstaff Green Business of the Year Award, and honors will be given to the distinguished nominees and recipients of the highly respected ATHENA Awards.

In addition, the Annual Meeting features high-profile keynote speakers. Last year, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs and APS CEO Ted Geisler held a fireside chat on the state of the state, and Dr. Cara Christ of Blue Cross Blue Shield delivered a powerful keynote on Arizona health policy. This year promises equally impactful speakers.

Since 1982, the ATHENA and ATHENA Young Professional Awards have championed excellence in female leadership. For over three decades, the Greater Flagstaff Chamber has partnered with ATHENA International to bring this prestigious award to Flagstaff, celebrating the women who drive growth and inspire others in the community.

Recognizing the unique challenges of both the public/nonprofit and private sectors, the Chamber honors one leader from each sector. The 2024 ATHENA Awards went to Lisa Lamberson of Mountain Sports Flagstaff and Devonna McLaughlin of Housing Solutions of Northern Arizona, Inc. The Young Professional Award, which celebrates emerging leaders, was awarded to Kate Wyatt of Flagstaff Medical Center.

Reflecting the Flagstaff business community's commitment to environmental stewardship, the Chamber introduced the Flagstaff Green Business Award in 2021. This award recognizes the sustainable efforts of local businesses and non-profits. The 2024 award honored Grand Canyon Railway for embedding sustainability into every aspect of its business model.

On November 20, Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce hosted "Connect & Learn: Marketing Strategies," an insightful session led by Craig Moody, a renowned business leader and coach. Participants gained actionable knowledge on brand development, marketing tactics, and customer engagement, all designed to drive business growth. Drawing from his extensive experience, including expanding Mammoth Restoration and growing Allure Aesthetics AZ, Craig shared proven strategies and practical examples. The event featured an engaging presentation, interactive discussions, and a Q&A, followed by breakfast and networking, providing attendees with valuable tools and new professional connections to support their business endeavors.

Business After Five - Lighting Up Connections at FlagTag AZ

On November 25, the Chamber hosted its popular Business After Five event at FlagTag AZ, and it was a night to remember. Scott Sawyer, owner of FlagTag AZ, went above and beyond to ensure attendees had an unforgettable experience, offering pizza, beverages, axe throwing, and, of course, laser tag. The lively venue proved to be the ideal setting for this business mixer, perfectly aligning with the “work hard, play hard” mindset of Flagstaff professionals.

Business After Five is a bi-monthly event hosted by the Chamber to bring its members together in a relaxed environment. It’s designed to foster connections, create networking opportunities, and even introduce potential customers—all while sharing delicious food, drinks, and a great time. Events like this embody the Chamber’s belief that building community happens best through shared experiences, which is why this BA5 was such a resounding success.

Good Morning Flagstaff Fires-up Local Business for Holiday Season

On a bright December morning, over 100 local businesses and professionals gathered at the DoubleTree on Route 66 to enjoy coffee, a delicious breakfast, and meaningful networking opportunities. Co-hosts CT McMurry and Joe Galli of the Chamber led the event with energy and enthusiasm, orchestrating dynamic table networking and sponsor presentations that kept attendees engaged.

In just two hours, participants made more connections than they might in a month of regular business interactions. A highlight of this quarter's GMF was DJ Brandon from 7000ft of Sound, a locally based DJ service that kept the music lively

and the atmosphere buzzing. As the final GMF of the year, we are proud to have ended 2024 with full tables, strong connections, and an energized community.

Sizzler Celebrates Grand Re-opening with Chamber & Community

On December 2, Sizzler celebrated the grand reopening of its newly remodeled Milton Ave. restaurant. The Chamber joined owner Mary Freer for a special ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the occasion. The event featured lively performances by the Northern Arizona University band, exciting merchandise giveaways, and generous donations to Flagstaff and Coconino High School athletic programs, showcasing Sizzler's commitment to being a community-focused restaurant. Congratulations to Mary Freer and the Sizzler team as they embark on the next chapter of their journey!

Flagstaff Medical Center Earns an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group

New Grade for fall 2024 is a national recognition for commitment to patient safety

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Flagstaff Medical Center (FMC) earned an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit patient safety steward that sets standards for hospitals. Leapfrog assigns a letter grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them. The award is an independent testament to the care NAH provides patients in our community.

“A big congratulations to the entire staff at FMC for receiving an ’A’ grade for Fall 2024 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades,” said Dave Cheney, CEO of Northern Arizona Healthcare. “It makes me so proud to see our hardworking staff nationally recognized, especially when it’s something as important as hospital safety. I know how hard each of our colleagues work at providing the best care, and this award shows just how committed NAH is to providing the highest quality of care to each patient, every time,” Cheney added.

“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for FMC,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It reflects enormous dedication to your patients and their families, and your whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to FMC, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, excellence in preventing hospital-acquired infections and complications and staff-to-patient rations that ensure safety is a top priority. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring. Out of 50 hospitals in Arizona rated by The Leapfrog Group, only 14 of them received an ‘A’ grade, including FMC and NAH’s Verde Valley Medical Center. FMC has consistently been awarded an ‘A’ grade for excellence since Fall 2023.

To explore FMC’s full grade details and to find valuable tips for staying safe in the hospital, visit HospitalSafetyGrade.org

A New Era of Train Travel: Grand Canyon Railway Receives $3.4 Million Grant to Go Zero-Emission with Battery Electric Power

November 2024 – Williams, AZ – All aboard for an even cleaner ride! The Grand Canyon Railway has been awarded a $3.4 million grant to convert one of its classic diesel locomotives into a zero-emission, battery-powered locomotive. This exciting shift, funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, is part of a nationwide push for greener transportation and will enhance the scenic route from Williams, Arizona to Grand Canyon’s South Rim. With fewer emissions, visitors can now look forward to an even more sustainable journey through one of America’s most treasured landscapes.

in regenerative electric technology. We are proud that the locomotive will be constructed by the Railway’s own employees in our Williams Locomotive Shop.”spectacular views of the universe and for allowing our imaginations to soar.”

The project is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s CRISI grant program, which supports environmentally forward-thinking rail projects across the country. Grand Canyon Railway worked with Innovative Rail Technologies to develop the grant request.

“We are excited to embark on this new project and appreciate the support and funding from the Federal Railroad Administration and U.S. Department of Transportation. Champions of this project include local community Mayors, County Supervisors, Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce and both Arizona Senators Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema. This support allows us to pioneer sustainable, regenerative battery-electric locomotion that will help preserve this landscape and resources for future generations,” said Jeff D’Arpa, Vice President and General Manager at Grand Canyon Railway and Hotel.

The new locomotive will glide to the canyon on a single battery charge in this delicate ecosystem. “The Grand Canyon Railway is a place where you can experience both the amazing legacy of steam locomotion and soon, modern innovations such as battery-electric propulsion. This project will significantly reduce the already low environmental impact of visiting the Grand Canyon via rail and will provide a quieter and cleaner guest experience. This builds on our previous innovation of converting our historic steam locomotives to run on waste vegetable oil,” said Kevin Crosby, Director of Sustainability for Xanterra.

The eco-friendly upgrade includes regenerative braking, which captures energy during the train’s 64-mile journey across changing elevations, recharging the battery about 30% each trip. The new technology will also bring maintenance and fuel savings, keeping this experience sustainable for generations.

“This project is a unique chance to bring modern efficiency to a historic rail icon,” added Eric Hadder, Chief Mechanical Officer at Grand Canyon Railway. “Our team in Williams is proud to lead the way

Named in honor of the Marley Foundation, whose generous support helped bring the vision to life, the center boasts immersive exhibits, interactive displays, and engaging programming designed to inspire visitors of all ages. Its focal point, the Universe Theater, is expected to become a must-see attraction, drawing thousands of tourists annually.

The Marley Discovery Center aligns with Flagstaff’s identity as the world’s first International Dark Sky City. It complements existing attractions, like the historic Clark Telescope and the Giovale Open Deck Observatory, further solidifying Lowell Observatory as a top-tier destination. The observatory already attracts over 100,000 visitors each year, and the addition of the Marley Discovery Center is projected to increase attendance by at least 20%.

This surge in tourism will ripple through Flagstaff’s economy, benefiting hotels, restaurants, retail stores, and service providers. According to the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, the expansion could inject millions of dollars into the local economy annually and create new jobs in the hospitality and tourism sectors.

Former Lowell Observatory Executive Director Dr. Jeff Hall shared the broader vision behind the project: “The Marley Discovery Center is more than a building. It’s a beacon of curiosity and exploration. By investing in education and public engagement, we’re also investing in Flagstaff’s economic vitality.”

As the doors to the Marley Discovery Center officially open, the excitement is palpable. This landmark facility not only celebrates Flagstaff’s rich scientific heritage but also ensures a bright and prosperous future for the city.

LEADERSHIP @7000ft

Amanda S. Bosh PhD Executive Director

Lowell Obervatory

Dr. Bosh took on the position of Lowell Observatory Operations Manager in 2020, then the role of Chief Operating Officer in 2022, and currently the role of Executive Director as of November 2024, but her roots at the observatory run deep. Dating back to 1986 she has participated in a variety of research and outreach efforts at Lowell and her resume bulges with achievements that include co-discovering Pluto’s atmosphere and co-founding Lowell’s Native American Astronomy Outreach Program.

Dr. Bosh earned her undergraduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1987 and then jumped right into MIT’s graduate program. The following year, she rode aboard the Kuiper Airborne Observatory—predecessor of the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA)—and was part of the team that included scientists from Lowell, MIT, and elsewhere that first directly measured Pluto’s atmosphere.

Upon earning her PhD in 1994, she was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at Lowell. She held this position until 1997 and after a one-year stint in the Department of Physics at Hofstra University, returned to Lowell as an assistant research scientist. Throughout these years at Lowell she participated in a number of outreach activities. Seeing an opportunity to take astronomy to underserved Native American communities, Bosh teamed with Dr. Deidre Hunter in 1996 to found the program known today as the Lowell Observatory Native American Astronomy Outreach Program.

In 2002 Dr. Bosh accepted a position with Boston University as a senior research associate at Lowell, a position she held until 2009. She then took on the role of lecturer and, later, senior lecturer, at MIT, maintaining an adjunct position with Lowell. During this time, she continued working on occultations of Pluto, pinpointing observing locations that were crucial to SOFIA observations, as well as the New Horizons flyby of Pluto.

Q: How did you come to be in this profession?

AB: I’m an astronomer by accident, I had intended to become an engineer. In fact, I have a degree in Materials Engineering. I was taking astronomy classes for fun as an undergraduate at MIT, then started doing astronomy research “for fun” and pretty soon I realized that this was what I wanted to do!

Q: How long have you been in practice?

AB: I received my PhD in 1994, and since then I’ve been a research astronomer, a professor of physics, a senior lecturer in planetary science, an operations manager, Chief Operating Officer, and now Executive Director.

Q: What has been your biggest workplace thrill or accomplishment?

AB: We just opened our new Astronomy Discovery Center on 16 November. While I was thrilled that we successfully got to opening (there are so many things that can go wrong when building a new, 40,000 square foot facility!) the most thrilling part of the day was seeing the public’s reaction to the new facility. People were learning, playing, watching—in short, having fun and enjoying the facility! It just made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside to know that I had contributed to this facility and to this day!

Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your profession?

AB: Talk to those who are currently in the field, learn from their successes and failures. There are plusses and minuses in every profession; learn what they are in your intended area so that you’ll be able to try to avoid the negatives. Astronomy is fun, exciting, and a lot of work. One of the moments I hold on to was when I was part of a team that had discovered Pluto’s atmosphere. For a few hours, we were the only people on Earth who knew that Pluto had an atmosphere—it was a thrilling feeling! It was just as thrilling to let others in on the secret, and tell the story of the discovery!

Q: What do you do for fun?

AB: One of my hobbies is photography; I recently purchased a lightning detector for my camera so that a lightning bolt will trigger a photo—I can’t wait to try it! I love to escape into a book, be it a mystery, historical fiction, or non-fiction.

What about Flagstaff makes it the best place for you to live?

Q: How do your services enrich the quality of life for the community?

AB: Astronomy drew me in with the promise of exploration on a grand scale, of knowing what conditions on other planets are, of imagining what life in other galaxies might be like. It’s an offer to get to know our natural universe. It might be for the beauty, or for opportunity to expand our knowledge through discovery, or just an chance to escape into the vast unknown.

Q: From whom do you seek business advice

AB: We have a wonderful Advisory Board of people who believe in our mission to discover and to share discovery with everyone. I can go to them with questions of business, science, technology—almost anything, really!

AB: Dark skies, the people, and the amazing natural landscape! As the first international Dark Sky City, Flagstaff’s commitment to preserve the darkness of the night means that this is one of the few places where you can see the Milky Way from within city limits. This allows our astronomical institutions like Lowell Observatory to continue to study and discover.

Q: To what do you attribute your business success?

AB: Learn from others, accept help, and keep trying!

Q: What is more important for you today than 10 years ago?

AB: I used to be a full introvert, preferring to spend the day with my data and my computer. Over time, that has changed. Don’t get me wrong—I still love my data! But now, I spend my days talking with people, and I love it!

Q: My number one rule when striving to be greater is…

AB: Nver stop learning

The Highly anticipated Marley Discovery Center at Lowell Observatory opened its doors on November 16, 2024. The 40,000-square-foot, $53.4 million stateof-the-art center, encompassing three stories and a rooftop open-sky planetarium, represents an investment in the future of astronomical education and public engagement in Northern Arizona.

Lowell Observatory’s COO, Dr. Amanda Bosh, adds, “The Astronomy Discovery Center embodies the spirit of exploration and discovery that has been at the heart of Lowell Observatory for more than a century. This center will inspire awe and curiosity in visitors of all ages, providing an unmatched experience that combines cutting-edge technology with the beauty of Flagstaff's dark skies.”

The Astronomy Discovery Center marks a monumental addition to Flagstaff’s renowned status as a premier destination for astrotourism. The Astronomy Discovery Center has been recognized by the Smithsonian Magazine as the #1 most anticipated museum opening in 2024 and Lowell was recently named the #1 most Iconic Tourist Attraction in Arizona by PHOENIX magazine in the Arizona Travel Awards. Lowell Observatory's public programming and unique location contribute to its recognition. Located

just one hour from the Grand Canyon South Rim Visitor Center, and positioned under the world's first International Dark Sky City, Lowell offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the cosmos under some of the darkest skies in the world.

Dr. Jeff Hall, Executive Director, says, “At Lowell Observatory, we believe in the power of education to transform lives. The Astronomy Discovery Center adds to Lowell's mission to be incredibly accessible and an exciting place for people of all ages to discover the universe, and we hope it will ignite lifelong curiosity in everyone who comes through its doors.” As the only facility of its kind in the United States, the new Astronomy Discovery Center offers a unique blend of interactive experiences, cutting-edge technology, and accessible learning that sets it apart on the international stage of astrotourism.

Origins Gallery: Featuring a suspended artistic centerpiece depicting the evolution of the universe - from the Big Bang to life. Sponsored by Orr Family Foundation in honor of Joe Orr.

The Astronomy Discovery Center’s mission is to enthrall visitors in the wonders of the cosmos through free-choice learning experiences, ultimately bringing them along for the ride as co-discoverers.

Dr. Stephen Levine, Director of Education at Lowell Observatory, emphasizes, “This new facility will be a gateway to critical thinking through study of the cosmos with the goal of increasing scientific literacy. By engaging visitors in hands-on activities and immersive presentations, we aim to ignite a lifelong passion for science and exploration.” Astrotourism in Arizona, especially in Flagstaff, holds immense importance due to the state's rich astronomical heritage and significant economic impact. As the world's first International Dark Sky City, Flagstaff attracts tourists and renowned researchers, enhancing its status as a hub for astronomical advancements. Lowell Observatory alone draws around 100,000 visitors annually, contributing significantly to local education and tourism. Over the next decade, astrotourism in Northern Arizona is projected to generate $5.8 billion for the Colorado Plateau and create about 10,000 new jobs each year, according to the Night Sky Tourist.

CHAMBER MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Quality Connections Co-Founder

Honored by NAU

Congratulations to Melissa Bernasconi, co-founder of Quality Connections, who was recently inducted into the Northern Arizona University College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Hall of Fame.

The recognition celebrates her decades of dedication to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities through advocacy, creative programming, and social entrepreneurship.

A native of New York state, Melissa followed her adventurous spirit – and a sister who was living in Sedona – and headed west to Arizona, where she pursued a degree in psychology with a minor in sociology at NAU. An internship working alongside individuals with disabilities helped her discover her vocation, she said.

In 1999, Melissa and her husband, Armando, began Quality Connections. In addition to their experience working with disabled individuals, they were also motivated by their friendship with Armando’s college roommate, Ben Sutcliffe, who had cerebral palsy. Among Ben’s dearest wishes was to be gainfully employed and to fall in love and get married.

What started in their dining room and garage in 1999 as a small employment service blossomed into a multi-faceted organization, including QC Office, a social enterprise that was launched when Melissa and Armando were awarded a $750,000 Rehabilitation Services Administration Establishment Grant from the state. QC Office’s first employee was Ben.

Over the years, Quality Connections - a Chamber member for more than 15 years - evolved beyond employment services, expanding to include a residential program, an adult day program, in-home and respite services for caregivers, and Evergreen Academy, a highly-rated preschool and training center for Quality Connection members interested in careers in childcare and early childhood education.

“We started by trying to help people find jobs and prepare them for the workforce,” Melissa explains. “Now we are able to do training and provide meaningful employment through QC Office and our preschool in addition to placing people in the

community.”

Melissa served as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Quality Connections until 2012, when the role shifted to Armando Bernasconi. Melissa now serves as Development Director for Quality Connections, pursuing grants, building partnerships, and working with NAU interns and faculty.

“My big focus is making connections,” she said. “It’s a good role for me.”

Congratulations, Melissa Bernasconi, on your well-deserved recognition in NAU’s Hall of Fame!

Business Advocacy 2024 in Five Bullet Points

Advocating for member businesses and the broader business community is a cornerstone of the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce’s mission. In 2024, the Chamber’s Business Advocacy efforts were particularly significant, addressing several key issues with substantial impacts on our local businesses. Below is a brief summary of the initiatives and work the Chamber has undertaken over the past year in our Business Advocacy Division.

• Drafted a piece of legislation which was introduced in the Arizona Senate. The legislation, known as H.B. 1213, passed the Arizona Senate Commerce Committee and passed the entire Arizona Senate before being and heard in the House Ways and Means Committee. The bill would give businesses disadvantaged by local wage mandates in Arizona cities and towns a modest tax credit.

• Weighed in on a dozen + federal policy issues via the U.S. Chamber, pushing back on over-regulatory policies including the attempt to do away with noncompetes, individual labor mandates of the Pro Act, and voiced opposition to anti-business Biden appointments including NLRB and acting DOL Secretary Julie Su.

• From October 2023 through July 2024 Chamber Advocacy Staff met consistently with Mayor, Councilmembers and city staff in the city’s Water Division to push back on a massive water and sewer rate hike via rate restructuring. Attended several public meetings, and eventually had the potential fee hike reduced by a substantial percentage saving businesses and citizens millions over the next five years.

• In August 2024, the Business Advocacy Division of the Chamber hosted a Water Symposium in partnership with Business for Water Stewardship at Little America. The full-day event hosted individual presenters and panelists, experts on water, from across Arizona including an Arizona Senator. Local business leaders and elected officials attended. The event was a huge success for the Chamber, including netting the Greater Flagstaff Chamber $5,000.00 +/- for the effort.

• Ran a quiet 2024 local campaign effort, which included pushing out Board candidate and proposition endorsements with VoterVoice communications and earned media (inc. staff appearances on local talk shows – The Jeff Oravits Radio Show and The Jeff Kennedy Show), to educate the public on the Chamber Board’s Council candidate and statewide proposition preferences. Our number 1 council candidate endorsement, Councilmember Miranda Sweet, was the leading vote getter in the 6-way council race earning 15,310 votes. Additionally, we specifically entered a formal written position in the statewide voter guide in favor of Proposition 312, which passed 58.62 to 41.38 percent with 1,804,728 votes in favor.
