THE ART OF
HAPPINESS Iberia Tiles and artist Romero Britto have teamed up on a bold new collection with endless variations that lets homeowners add energy, joyfulness, and world-famous artwork to their personal space. With work famously drenched in vibrant colors and patterns, Romero Britto’s new collaboration has a surprisingly subdued inspiration: a global pandemic. The Brazilian artist and mega-star teamed up with Miami’s Iberia Tiles to bring his imaginative creations into consumers’ homes — or almost anyplace with walls, really. The new Britto Mosaic by Iberia Tiles uses a patented nano-polymer to create fully customized tile mosaics of Britto’s joyful and energetic art. But how did a quarantine lead to this breakthrough innovation? Iberia Tiles CEO, Carlos Ferrando explains that normally the company attends international design shows to seek out new trends and products. When the COVID shutdown prevented that — and much of anything else last year — the company found itself hungry for new design ideas. Ferrando says Raul Fadel, Iberia’s Director, thought if they couldn’t travel, maybe they could develop something new here at home. “That’s when the idea of partnering with Britto on mosaics popped into Raul´s head,” Ferrando says. Iberia contacted Britto’s team, who was intrigued by the concept. After developing some samples, everyone immediately saw the potential demand. Soon the partnership was born. It’s been quite fruitful. The exclusive Britto Mosaic Tile Format is extremely versatile, available in a wide array of shapes and sizes that work both indoors and outdoors. The mesh-mounted

mosaics are made in Italy and can be applied on almost any tiled surface — drywall, backsplashes, ceilings, and even furniture. Since the material is only 5/64 of an inch (2mm) thick, the Britto mosaics work in unconventional places like elevators and yachts without adding weight. Ferrando happily points out the variety available. “You can use the art on tiles as small as a square inch and up to a square foot.” Customers can choose Britto designs ranging from his signature hyper-colorful work to minimalist and monochromatic pieces. “We also offer customized design options, too,” Ferrando added. Iberia Tiles has been a decor institution in South Florida for the last four decades. They’ve forged a rock solid reputation as the go-to source for the best porcelain, stone, and slabs from Italy and Spain. The new Britto collection is a perfect addition. Between South Florida’s unique mix of cultural influences, palpable energy, and continued population surge, there’ll be no shortage of customers eager to bring this collection’s mix of inspiration, joy, and effervescence (dubbed “The Happy Art Movement” by Britto) into their homes. While Ferrando is partial to the beautiful tiles Iberia imports from Spain and Italy, she notes that the Spanish design scene is a bit more conservative than the U.S. “Although the culture and architecture are amazing there, designers here take some of the best elements from all over and blend it into something new.” She says the Britto Mosaic by Iberia Tiles collection is a perfect example. Ferrando says the new Britto offerings touch on one of her favorite parts of the tile business. “We get to be part of homeowners’ lives through the designs they choose,” she says. Even more gratifying than good reviews or referrals is when customers share how happy they are with the results, she says, adding, “There’s nothing better.” The collaboration extends beyond just the Britto Mosaic by Iberia Tiles products. Ferrando has a new appreciation for the organization. “Britto´s team is incredible. He makes sure to interact with all his employees daily and we’ve learned a lot. It’s been amazing so far and I’m sure this is only the beginning of a great relationship.” For more information, visit https://www.iberiatiles.com/britto.

“ Adding outdoor art is a great way for designers and homeowners to allow for anyone passing by the street to enjoy art from outside the home.”
A CONVERSATION WITH
ROMERO BRITTO How do you evolve your iconic style while keeping it so recognizable? I keep myself inspired by everything in the Universe: nature, people, animals, events, and experiences, which then translates to my artwork.
You’ve said “Art is too important not to share.” How can people do that more? Adding outdoor art is a great way for designers and homeowners to allow for anyone passing by the street to enjoy art from outside the home.
What local element inspires your work most? The beautiful waters of South Florida.
If you could reimagine a South Florida landmark, which would it be, and how? It would be fantastic to have a massive bridge painted for Miami Beach.
Which new, emerging artists really catch your eye? Mister E. Along with artwork, how would you recommend people incorporate your joyf ul aesthetic into their home decor? Well there’s the beautiful mosaics created by Iberia in different mediums, on backsplashes, in swimming pools, etc. and the process of selecting furniture, flooring, etc. How has this past year influenced you? I’ve embraced the challenges from the past year, adapted, and given myself more opportunity to focus on creating and completing artworks.
What are some of your favorite recent trends in art? Mosaics as part of homes. How does artwork in a home improve the lives of the people living there? Artwork in the home tells the story of the people living there. It creates a connection to the space. Is it possible to have too much art in a home? Never too much!

What is your favorite part about entertaining? It’s definitely about creating a warm atmosphere, exciting experience, setting the mood to create the best memories with friends or family. Open-plan layouts and homes with a nice indoor-outdoor flow lend themselves perfectly to effortless entertaining, allowing you to mingle with guests, while preparing food or drinks at the same time.
What are your top 3 tips for creating a space that is inviting for guests? Choose a theme and color palette for the food and styling, layering textures and accessorizing to make the guests feel special. Create an interesting and festive table that sets the scene using fine china and silverware, and of course, layer it with candles, vases, and flower arrangements. A tablecloth and runner, napkins, and other accessories are also a must have. Making a bar station is always a great idea. Your bar station can be a festive, fun addition to any type of event, gathering, or party that gives your guests the freedom to make their own selections, and get refills whenever they want. No matter what kind of drinks or food you’re serving, your bar station is also the perfect place to store a few staple accessories on hand.
What is your must have item (food, beverage, or accessory) when hosting guests at your home? My must have item for every party is a stylish cheese board or serving platter. It’s functional and doubles as a picture-perfect centerpiece for your party. For more of Marina’s styling tips, follow her on Instagram @marina.b.style.

MATTHEW LANG
The Plant Guy
Born and raised in South Florida, Matthew has always been passionate about working with plants. Specializing in creating an atmosphere for a modern landscape, his work truly reflects perfection and his quality of craftsmanship. What is your favorite part about entertaining? My favorite part of entertaining honestly is being around good friends to enjoy some good conversation. Especially when we can converse with each other about our passions.
What are your top tips for creating a space that is inviting for guests? Find out what your guests like before they arrive, whether it’s their favorite flower, drink, or music to make sure it’s there to be part of the experience. Lighting is everything, lighting tells all. No one wants an overly bright room when you have guests over. I love unscented candles to set the mood, or make sure your lights are appropriately dimmed for the occasion. Lastly, opt for cloth napkins rather than paper napkins or paper towels. Invest in some white linen napkins and roll them up. That little extra element adds a really special touch.
What is your must have item (food, beverage, or accessory) when hosting guests at your home? Of course there has to be plants! If plants are not anywhere to be found, no stress. Take a quick walk outside and look for some palm leaves, flowers, or whatever looks pretty. Make a couple snips and place them in a glass vase on the dining room table or in the guest bathroom. REAL ESTATE

Mayi de la Vega launched and grew ONE Sotheby’s International Realty into a powerhouse with 20 offices and $4 billion in annual sales. The visionary CEO shares her thoughts on driving the evolution of upscale real estate, the ultimate luxury, and her legacy. What makes living in South Florida so unique? Florida’s always had a relaxed atmosphere which inspires people from all over the world to call this area home. That incredible diversity we enjoy creates a very cosmopolitan experience with art, culture, food, and lifestyle. That aligns nicely with economics to keep attracting savvy entrepreneurs and businesses to the area. We’re a “happening” destination. And the resulting feeling among local businesses and investors is electrifying! What’s the most profound change you’ve seen in the market? Since I founded ONE Sotheby’s International Realty in 2008, the growth of the real estate market — in quality, in reach, and especially in price point — has just been stellar. Obviously, I saw an opportunity. Yet, helping a luxury real estate brand thrive, while also strengthening the area as one of the world’s most prestigious markets to this degree, has been incredibly satisfying.

Which are the up-and-coming South Florida neighborhoods to watch? Well, it’s hard to only name a few. The speed and magnitude of change is truly remarkable. Palm Beach, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Vero Beach — all those areas are equally dynamic. As tremendous as the boom in iconic neighborhoods with single-family homes was in 2020, I’m excited about the opportunities we’re creating in new communities by combining the latest architecture and lifestyle trends. Projects like Boca Raton’s Royal Palm Residences and Villa Valencia in Coral Gables have a mix of quality, amenities, and overall vibe that’s really aligning nicely with the overwhelming demand from out-of-state buyers.

How is ONE SIR innovating the way upscale condominiums are bought and sold? ONE Sotheby’s International Realty doesn’t just sell real estate. We sell a lifestyle. So to be at the forefront of the industry, we partner with developers to define what’s most important to buyers. For example, the pandemic inspired a dramatic shift in the luxury condo market. Buyers are wanting residences that feel like home, with outdoor spaces and wellness offerings. We’ve been able to use our strategic expertise, technology, creative marketing, and global network to help offer more of that lifestyle. How has the pandemic changed how you interact with clients? We’ve had to increase our focus on technology. Agents are now working more seamlessly, especially with clients from other states, using virtual reality tours, video-conferencing, digital advertising, and more. All the changes have been worth it. Our suite of tools has evolved and our agents worked harder than ever in 2020, generating record sales volume last year. What are the emerging trends among ultra-luxury buyers? I’m seeing a renewed focus on enjoying treasured moments with friends and family. Buyers are also putting more value on the ultimate luxury: privacy. And that’s where high-rise residences, waterfront, and equestrian properties are thriving more than ever. People are choosing properties that offer amenities they find in the world’s top hotels, as well as smart home tech, green

living, and the latest design trends. What are the top considerations for buyers transitioning from single family homes to waterfront towers? I’d say the biggest factor is working with a seasoned agent. Finding a property online is easy. Finding a great agent is more important. From school options, to demographics, to overall amenities and local attractions, the variables can be endless in South Florida. Getting strategic advice from someone who understands each community’s unique characteristics is absolutely key. What’s your proudest achievement in this real estate market? That would have to be touching the lives of our agents. I care deeply about their growth — both professionally as well as individuals. We collaborate. We learn from each other. If our ONE team is breaking sales records, winning awards, and innovating, I know it comes from supporting them every day. Seeing our agents excel in their careers and flourish as beacons in their communities is so fulfilling. That is my professional legacy.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT
DIMARE DESIGN Deborah DiMare is on a quest. She wants to make all interior design humane, sustainable, healthy, and non-toxic. And she believes it can be done while keeping it affordable — and without sacrificing quality, comfort, or luxury.
When you think of luxury interior design, vegan, ethical, and cruelty-free might be some of the last words that come to mind. Deborah DiMare wants to change that. That’s what this interior designer, author, and ethical/ wellness design pioneer has spent the last 20 years working towards. Her company DiMare Design is the only interior design firm that’s 100% cruelty-free and specializes in creating organic, optimal spaces using vegan textiles and sustainable, zero-to-low toxin furniture. The world seems to have started catching up — at least within the food and fashion industries. DiMare hopes to see that awareness expand into interior design as well. She originally went the vegan route for interior design a few years ago after learning some of the darker truths about the leather industry. DiMare discovered that nearly a billion animals are destroyed yearly for their skins. “When I discovered that dogs, cats, seals, and kangaroos are also sold as leather, I went cruelty-free in my business. I have never looked back.” Fortunately, people can embrace ethical and healthier decor in their homes without having to abruptly make wholesale, all-or-nothing changes. DiMare recommends going slowly to avoid getting overwhelmed. Start by choosing one room to turn into a healthier environment. “For a bedroom, consider replacing down-feather pillows with buckwheat or kapok and choosing sheets that are Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified.” Another option is picking five items to replace with healthier alternatives. Generally, she suggests making sure that your furnishings have no strong varnishes on them and choosing paint with low or zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) for your walls.
30
HOME DESIGN MAGAZINE / HOMESHOWS.NET
As a designer, DiMare points out that with humane and healthy design, you’re not limited to drab, utilitarian choices. “There’s no reason the luxury of a space needs to be compromised,” she says. Nor is it only for the super affluent. “We source great budget-friendly, ready-made furniture and décor for clients as well as high-end superluxury custom furniture.” DiMare enjoys seeing quality alternatives to animal-based products. “I’m a fan of Kravet’s beautiful faux leathers and I also love banana silk and tencel rugs by Stark.” While design will always be a passion for DiMare, her journey towards doing it ethically has inspired a new one: education. She started another company, Vegan Design, to offer courses about cruelty-free design to consumers and industry pros alike. The company’s website (vegandesign.org) also offers a way to tackle the dearth of humane design products on the market. With so little retailer support, that’s where DiMare launched her own online shop. “Everything we offer is cruelty-free and focused on reduced toxins.”
DiMare has reason to be optimistic that her message is reaching design-conscious people. She estimates that 50% to 75% of her new clients seek her out specifically for her humane and healthy approach to design That awareness has had a ripple effect. After encountering so many clients — either their children or the adults themselves — with sensory sensitivities, DiMare realized that her non-toxic design direction could benefit them. “For this population, an environment’s smells, textures, sounds are exaggerated so I’m very aware of selecting furniture, materials and décor that don’t aggravate them”. DiMare’s journey brings her great satisfaction. “I really like that this work has purpose. I’m educating people and changing the way they think. It’s helping protect all living beings, human and non,” she says. Ultimately, the companies and the projects offer DiMare much more than income. “My work excites me.” For more information, visit https://www.dimaredesign.com/

The Little Gatherings curates magical, thoughtful picnics throughout South Florida.
