‘WHERE TIME DIDN’T STAND STILL’ MECHANICAL DISTRESSING WITH BRUSHING MACHINES AND ROLLER PATTERNS If you want to give wooden floors and stairs depth and structure (i.e. if you want to distress them), you can inter alia use special brushing machines and brushes made specially for that purpose or machines which create roller patterns. For this introduction we surveyed the market and came out by the Dutch company Cosma and the Italian firms Renzo Borgonovo and FNT-Trabattoni Stampi.
Brushing machines If we consider first how Cosma approaches this, we see that this involves a series of brushing machines and brushes (in nylon abrasive and steel) designed and made specially for giving wooden floors and stairs depth and structure. What we notice is that sanding machines give the surface the best possible preparation. The sanding brushes are often combined with structuring brushes and dust brushes. All brush aggregates are supplied with dust heads and the structuring and sanding machines have sealed covers to limit the spread of dust and increase safety.
Applying oil and stain The roller coater system then applies oil and stain to the wooden floors. Single or double roller systems are supplied for conventional oils and LED oils. The rubber rollers and gummy rollers are available in various degrees of hardness for the type of application. The specially built machines spread the oil and stain evenly over the wooden surface. The pad and brushes hereby absorb surplus material to ensure that the correct amount is applied. Surface texture, required colour, and (protective) layer thickness play an important part in achieving the desired result and for structured wooden floors a special pad brush has been developed to ensure that the oil penetrates deep into the wood grain. They also told us that specially designed brush cleaning machines provide the perfect solution for cleaning the pad
brushes and cylindrical brushes which are used to spread oil or stain. All the cleaning units are equipped with air motors for an explosion-proof design. The special brush technology provides each required surface finish. Both standard and tailored brushes are made for all surface treatment or treatments, ranging from structuring and sanding to the application and spread of oil or stain.
Italian know-how and design When we turn our thoughts to Italy, we simply have to consider the products FNT#101 and FNT#102/103: roller patterns from Renzo Borgonovo and FNT-Trabattoni Stampi. These roller patterns are part of an existing series, but are the latest development for 2021 in this field. Renzo Borgonovo Srl, formed in 1961 by the similarly named Renzo Borgonovo, is a design and engineering company which specialises in producing special machines. With both roller patterns they demonstrate how they are up to date. For instance, when the FNT#101 is used on rustic wood, it yields a splendid reproduction of an old weathered plank, with the creation of a rural sphere. In addition, they offer a completely different pattern (Wavy Wood). This is a delicately designed geometric pattern which can be integrated into countless scenarios. What’s particularly worthy of note is a technical detail of the cylinder roller. The first roller is divided up into two parts. With the one section, the pattern is fitted horizontally, and with the other vertically. This means clients can get two different patterns on the same roller, despite the downsizing of the total width of the design. This concept is ideal for geometric designs where variation in the width doesn’t matter. Sources: Cosma.nl and Renzo Borgonovo and FNT-Trabattoni Stampi.
