Green transportation. China’s urban transportation sector is undergoing a massive transformation. First it was the rapid introduction of private cars during the last 20 years. However, endemic congestion, air pollution and diseconomies of the transport sector have spurred the massive investments in public transport systems. Foremost the cities above 5 million inhabitants have invested in underground metro systems and bus rapid transit (BRT) systems. Smaller cities are adopting BRTs and trams. Electromobility has entered public transport as well as the private vehicle market. The government’s New Urbanization Policy stated that development of public transport enjoys priority. Until 2020, the share of super- and ultra-large public transport will reach 40%. The principle will be Transit-oriented development, non-motorized transit, public transit and car control.
