Sunshine Makes Me Happy

W

e have all heard the nursery song, “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray. You’ll never know dear how much I love you Please don’t take My sunshine away.”

I can remember has a child hearding that song and it making me smile.

As an adult that song still brings a smile but, the thought of summer time it brings an even bigger smile and it’s no suprise - a little sunshine every day that summer brings can boost your mood and also help to prevent a host of serious illnesses.

For years we have been told to cover up in the sun to cut the risk of getting skin cancer. But now it seems that a little bit of sunshine on your body is actually good for you. Studies have shown that a sensible amount of sun reduces your risk of several cancers and other serious health conditions.

And it’s all thanks to vitamin D, which is made by our bodies through the action of the sun’s UVB rays on our skin. Many doctors today now advice that we should go out in the sun between five and 15 minutes a day, at least three times a week in spring and summer, to boost our vitamin D levels. You can also get vitamin D from your diet - oily fish, such as salmon and tuna, is a good source - as is margarine, milk, eggs and fortified breakfast cereals. he message is simple and the great guitarist Jim Hendrix said it best years ago.“Music does not lie” Hendrix said, “If there is something to be changed in the world, then it can only happen through music”.

That message is shared by Dan Spitz, who many remember as the lead guitarist in the heavy metal rock band ‘Anthrax” which was so popular to the thousands of hard rock fans.

However Dan has taken on a new role, a new challenge in life and when we had a chance to speak to him recently it was a message which took on a new meaning of importance.

After his departure from Anthrax, Dan became heavily involved with his twin identical children, who just only after a few minutes of conversation you can realize he loves dearly. It is also clear that while his musical career pleased thousands around the world it was nothing to the frustration and inability to learn what was affecting his twins who were subsequently diagnosed with autism.

“I do not think anyone can realize the frustration that parents go through”, he related.

“At that time we did not have all the information that we have at hand today. The doctors would say ‘well we think we know but are not sure’ or ‘there is no test’. It was truly frustrating. Now, we have schools in which a person with autism can attend with professionals who work with the child to improve them, but not back then and it was very difficult.

That is my mission. I am a very determined person and while I will leave the medical statements and diagnosis to the doctors and scientists, I want to use my musical talents to better inform the public of this illness and hopefully some parent will not experience what I did.”

Dan Spitz comes from a long line of musicians in his family. His father was an avid listener of music and his brother as well. His musical career started when he was 13 years of age and progressed from that point. While he is well known for his guitar playing in the nationally known band ‘Anthrax”, Dan plays a variety of music and recently mastered the art of the instrument known as the ‘Weissenborn guitar’, a brand of lap slide guitar manufactured

by Hermann Weissenborn during the 1920’s and 1930’s in Los Angeles,California. It is estimated that fewer then 5000 were produced and the hollow neck and body chamber makes it a difficult instrument to master.

Like many musicians Dan reached a point in his musical career which convinced him to leave playing the guitar and take on an entire different career which was watchmaking. His efforts in that area earned him the reputation of being one of the best in the world. However now his interests have returned to music and when he heard the Weissenborn guitar he was intrigued and realized the instrument could assist in his efforts to educate the public on autism.

“When I heard the instrument I was fascinated with the sound and had to find out more” he related.

“I asked myself, what is that? I have to find out more about that instrument and I did.”

It takes a year just to make one. They told me it would take me a year to learn how to play it and in month five I had it. It’s an instrument that almost speaks, it will make you cry. It almost has a human voice and I think the public will like it when they hear it. We feature it on several of our songs and I think the audience will enjoy it when they hear it.

Dan joined forces with Dan Chaffin and have created ‘new music for the new era’ with his new band ‘DII’ and is playing his music to bring a new awareness concerning autism to the world.

Dan will continue to be involved in music and was quick to point out that, “I also want the

audience to get better educated about autism. It is a growing problem and I would not want any parent to experience the frustration we did as a family. I want them to know about the seriousness of the problem and I know we can do that with our music.”

During this interview Dan made a very interesting point. That while the child with autism may have difficulty in some areas of communication they are quick to learn using a I-Pad which may have various apps installed.

“At that time these devices were quite expensive however when the twins got the I-pad they used the item to improve their skills. I think it was beneficial. From my experience I think it would be worth providing one to the child and see if they improve in certain areas. They are more affordable now. It worked for us.”

Dan Spitz is correct on all counts.

Autism has increased 60 fold in the past 30 years. Research indicates that parents of children with autism experience greater stress then parents with mental retardation. While those with autism may not be able to express their basic wants or needs leaves the parents with a questions. Are the crying because they are hungry or sick? Why do they not look at you directly. Many need to know that Autism is a neurological disorder, it is not caused by bad parenting. Whenever a parent cannot determine the child’s needs, both are left frustrated.

And in a real life world the needs of a child who has autism requires constant attention, therefore one of the parents or a suitable caretaker must be with the child at all times.

Which brings up an interesting question. How do the parents who are tasked with constant supervision of a child suffering from such an illness get any time alone or a night out?

As a musician who played to crowds of thousands and as a parent of artistic twins, he gives 100% to any effort especially his children to make their life better. One of songs to be released is entitled, ‘The Voices’ which speaks to autism and what families who have a family member with autism experience.

First any person watching a child with any illness must possess the maturity and knowledge of how to handle the child. If you have such skills and knowledge perhaps the gift of allowing the parents a night out may be just what the doctor ordered. While an emphasis is always on the child the parent needs some attention and relief as well as caring for a child with autism can be physically exhausting for families and emotionally draining.

When parents raise a child with autism the words of Maya Angelou who said, “ I sustain myself with the love of family and friends” takes on real meaning.

Dan Spitz was the best at playing the guitar.

He was also the best at watchmaking. He was co-founder of the legendary rock band ‘Anthrax’, he achieved the title of a Swiss Certified Watchmaker, had one of his songs chased by NASA to be played on the Mars Rover in 2012 with other great artists. Now he wants to be the best at raising his identical twins and making sure that the public knows about autism through his music and how we can find a cure. Also in the meantime make the lives of parents of these children easier as they work to solve this medical problem.

Dan says it well when he relates that, “It’s just about pure love, music should transmit that. Our music is going to appeal to all those who have heard me in the past. We want to reach everyone.”

I have a feeling he will.

Dan Spitz is on a mission through his music and if he approaches it like he did with his past musical career we know he will be successful.

His new band D-II which was named by using the letter ‘D’ which was the first letter of both his and Don Chaffins name, which will soon carry the message that he carries so close to his heart.

“Donny came up with the name and I am so fortunate to have him by my side on this venture” he related.

The Significance of in the Evolution of Humanity

N

early 300 young girls were recently kidnapped in Nigeria by a radical religious group that believes that women have no right to education. You nigeriacan look at our history and see how women have been victim to abuse of all kinds throughout the course of history. Even in the United States in 2014, by law, women are paid less than men.

This article is a vehicle through which I can express my opinion about the magnificent beings created by the one known by so many names – women.

If women come from Adam’s rib as the Bible and the Torah depict, take a look at everything that has been created in the world as a result 26

of this. What started as one thing became another, an updated version of the first. If we follow this idea, these two products created by God, then first we have the man, and then the updated version of man, the woman. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why men have been so threatened by us and, in their fear, the only way they have found to stop us from brightly shining our light and embracing our power is to repress us and abuse us the way they have been for so many years. Here may also be the key for those that are wanting to take away the rights of women; they are forgetting that women, too, are a creation of God, and as such, should be respected and honored, and allowed to show the wonders of the creator.

What is this being that we call a woman? What really is a woman? Something that, in comparison to a man, appears more fragile, perhaps less physically strong. But it is only by the strength that the body can produce, because by nature, women are so strong.

Who was been given the power of creation by the force that we call God? Who is the one that, once inseminated by man, not only has to carry, but actively participate in the creation of a new being, in constant communication with the force of God? Who must create the future of humanity and yet still fulfill all of life’s other duties?

Take a look around and see how, in times of crisis in the world, the ones who have kept the faith and trust are the women. Even in the times of womans workexiled from Egypt, the women were singing to the creator to hold on to the faith for a new beginning. In times of war, when the men had to leave the house to defend their ideals by fighting for their rights, women stepped up to the plate and performed not

element that anchors Earth, as well as being in sync with the rhythm of the universe at large.

A woman’s capacity to connect from within, organically with other forces, has been demonstrated not only by the communication with the universe through the menstrual cycle, but also by the capacity to align with other women in their own menstrual cycle.

When you have a group of women regularly interacting with one another for a long period of time, you will see how the menstrual cycles begins to align, bringing that group of women together in one of the most wonderful, interconnected experiences that allows for the understanding of what each one is going through. You can see an example of this in the native tribes through the ritual of red tents, where women who were going through their menstrual cycle would be gathered together.

Unfortunately, modern society has left behind the importance of this; once again, the wisdom of our elders has been taken for granted. Due to repression throughout the ages, we are unable to see the beauty and power of the feminine presence; it is taken for granted even by women themselves.

Look at a woman’s ability to produce enough blood to create a human body, and not only that, but to allow the growth of said body as it evolves within, allowing the two to experience

only their duties, but the duties of the men as well, in order to assist in the continuation of life in the world. Without a woman, there would be no life, and yet, women are still seen as the fragile creatures of the world.

From an anatomical and physiological perspective, the body of a woman is synchronized not only with the rhythm of the Earth, but with the universe as well, as it is connected to the cycle of the moon, which can be seen by its effect on the menstrual cycle.

Women connect to the moon, such an important element in keeping the Earth in orbit. Without the moon, Earth would be floating out of control around the universe; without the moon, Earth would not have a home. And yet, women, the fragile beings, are interconnected with the very

oneness. Women have the opportunity to experience oneness not only through the mind, but through the body, as they see a new life emerge from their bodies for the first time. The moment of birth allows a woman to know and understand that this being leaving the womb, is just another part of themselves, regardless if it is male or female. Men,

unfortunately, have to learn this concept that is already embedded within women.

These wonders that have been taken for granted is not the only consequence of repression and abuse, for women also don’t understand that they have the role and capacity to control the creation of human life on Earth. Women are the ones who decide which seed to spread in the world. The men go on and on and on just messing around with the seeds they carry, but women are the ones who have the power to select the ones with which they will procreate. Women are ultimately the ones who define our society, because if the source of the seed is abusive, careless, self-centered, and so on, they are the ones allowing for the reproduction of this energy into the world. If we are able to understand the importance of this statement that I am sharing with you today, we will be able to change humanity, and by recognizing this, we can create a better species for the human walk.

If women understood what they want to blend their energy with, choosing to align with the men that are in alignment with the higher consciousness, they would be bringing very evolved and astute beings into this planet.

Creation of the most astute human contains within itself the requirement of physical genetics. The evolution of the soul in the human form requires a genetic code in order to change. Unfortunately, women are not conscious of being more selective with who they want to procreate. The next level we’re hoping for humanity to achieve is the level of oneness, but in order for this to happen, the DNA needs to be cleaned up. The women are the ones that have the power to select the seed of humanity; they have the key to clean up the genetic code of humanity. If humans refrain from reproducing with the seed of darkness, darkness will not be reproduced. If we continue to reproduce, or choose seeds of darkness, then these seeds must be blended with light seeds in order to become lighter in essence. This process requires several

generations of blending in order for the soul to become more light-like.

If women choose more wisely when it comes to reproduction, they will be reproducing more sources of light for humanity, and this is, indeed, one of the greatest contributions that they can offer in the creation of a better world.

It is truly time for women to empower themselves, not only by recognizing their power and contribution to the world, but by honoring themselves as the wonderful beings that they are.

The actions being inflicted upon these children by the radical religious group in Nigeria show the negligence in respecting the creations of God, a God that, perhaps in their minds, they believe they respect so much. My heart stands in prayer for these girls to continue to shine their light and overcome the circumstances they are going through as a product of ignorance and a lack of love. My love goes out to the parents of these children, who must be in a state of such grief, sadness, and desperation. To those performing these actions, my brothers and sisters, call for their souls to awaken to the ways of love so that they may respect every being as part of the creator. The actions that we are witnessing today are reminders for all of us of the things that we are not yet able to accomplish.

n June 4th 2014 the day started as usual. Cool breeze, nice day for a walk on Oak Grove Blvd in Land O’ Lakes, Florida which is inhabited by several small lakes which are home to several ducks of different species.

On this morning however one mother duck who had looked over the six or more small ducklings who had hatched no more then 48 hours earlier, was attempting to cross the busy roadway when four of the ducklings fell into a storm drain. This situation was observed by a concerned driver and pedestrians all who stopped to assist however all were unable to find a solution on how to rescue the youngsters.

a ladder and went into the drain to remove the ducks and return them to their mother in a nearby pond.

Why do we write about this? Because it is important to know that in these times of public servants being taken to task, some valid and some not so valid, that we have a fire district that will respond and solve situations that are viewed as concerning to the public.

This was one of those situations.

One gentleman used a cell phone and called 911 asking for assistance. Quite frankly, I was hopeful however not expecting a hasty response.

To those three individuals, Brian Ploehn/ Engineer-Paramedic, Manuel Fuente/Driver Engineer-EMT and Mike Curley/Firefighter-EMT we say ‘Job Well Done’.

Now let’s all admit it. Four small ducks in a storm drain may not be as big an emergency as a house fire or a medical emergency however within minutes Station #23 in Land O Lakes responded with a truck and three firefighters who quickly assessed the situation, removed the drain cover inserted

Yes, you did not save the life of a human as you so often do but you did truly make a number of citizens pleased that they have such a responsive and caring fire department.

ant a fun way to recycle glass bottles? Many states offer a money back deposit on glass bottles when you return them to the store, but here in Florida the only option is to place them in the recycling bin for pickup or bring them to a recycling center. Why not re-purpose your glass bottles into something useful or decorative? Here are just a few ways you can re-use your glass bottles: Photo #1: Beer or wine bottle border Instead of purchasing a border for your garden use colored glass bottles instead. It is simple to do all you need is a rubber mallet and a shovel or post hole digger. First, decide on your garden border layout. If there is grass where you wish to place your border you will need to remove the sod using a shovel or post hole digger. If you have sandy soil like I do you can skip to the next step. Take your bottle and place the neck down in the dirt and give the bottom of the bottle a few gentle taps with the rubber mallet until the bottle is firm in place. Continue adding bottles

leaving a ¼” to ½” gap between each bottle. (The base of the bottle is wider than the neck, the gap will disappear as you pound them into the ground).

Remember to rinse your bottles before you install so not to attract ants.

Photo #2: Party Table Centerpieces We recently hosted our parents’ 50th Wedding anniversary. We contacted our wine drinking friends and collected all their empty wine bottles to use for the table centerpieces. Each bottle was washed and soaked to remove the labels then spray painted gold and splatter painted turquoise to match their wedding colors. We printed arched sticky labels with their wedding photo and anniversary date and placed them on the bottles to resemble a wine label. We filled them with silk Calla lilies (their wedding flowers) and placed them on the tables. At the end of the party the guests took them home as keepsakes.

Photo #3: Unique lighting To achieve this look we sprayed the clean wine bottles with spray adhesive then rolled in glitter. A string of Christmas lights was stretched from each bottle and dropped down into the bottle necks to give a soft glow.

Photo #4: Beer bottle fountain I admit this one is not your everyday bottle project. We collected beer bottles from a local Elks club to create a unique water feature on a raised water garden. The bottles were stacked using mortar mix to keep them in place. At the top a “bar” was added using discarded beer mugs and taps. The bottle caps were put back on to keep bees from forming hives inside the bottles. The possibilities for re-purposing with glass bottles are endless, all it takes is a bit of imagination.

omeone told me a long time ago ,’there is no good war’. I never forgot those words and have found that it is true.So recently when my son in law returned from a two week visit in Korea my thoughts returned to 1950 and the Korean War which raged on for three years and at the end cost some five million soldiers and civilians their lives.

This war was short compared to many we have been involved in, however very bloody and put America’s fighting forces to the test.

However, I was fortunate and was introduced to Bodie Osteen, a 81 year old former marine who was 17 years of age when he joined the Marine Corp. and soon found himself carrying his gear some 6000 miles away from the United States in Korea which had been invaded in 1950 by North Korea.

But first a little history.

When you stop and think about it, this ‘police action’ as it was called was not a highly publicized Korea had been ruled for years by Japan war and about 10 percent of the casualties were and by 1945 it was decided by Russia’s civilians which is higher then World War II’s and Joseph Stalin and the United States the two and Vietnam. However as many major super powers at the time to will tell you it was a struggle. Some formulate a plan to separate Korea 40,000 Americans died in action from Japan’s control. during the Korean War and more then 100,000 were injured.

While this was agreed upon it did lead to the formulation of two different styles of government. Therefore when the two superpowers left in 1947 you had one country divided in two sections with very different styles of government.

With that short history lesson North and South Korea soon reached a point where threats were made, hostile attacks on several occasions and a basic lack of ‘why can’t we just get along’.

Sounds a bit like Vietnam does it not? However everyone waited. Who would fire the first round.

Who would create the reason for the next war.

The United States had rejected requests from South Korea for arms and ammunition to build a more formidable fighting force. The fear that such arms and ammunition would be used against North Korea was a strong consideration.

However all that thinking came to a halt at 4:00AM on June 25th 1950 when North Korea attacked South Korea when 75,000 soldiers from the North Korea Peoples Army came across the 38th parallel catching South Korea by surprise.

The enemy quickly took the offense and before long Seoul, the countries capital some 30 miles south was invaded as well. American advisors to the South Korean army were killed, and hundreds of South Korean civilians were killed

as well. President Truman was enraged and sent American troops to stop the invasion and join other national forces which did the same.

Enter Pvt. Bodie Osteen a young man from a small town in North Florida who awoke one day in 1950 as the situation on Korea was unfolding to find an invitation from Uncle Sam in his mail box. His decision did not take long.

“I decided I was going to join the United States Marine Corp” Bodie related. “I knew that if I was drafted I would not have a choice of what I could do so I decided to join. I had a brother who served in World War II so that helped my decision a little bit I think. It did not take long and after training we were on a troop transport for twenty three days headed for Korea. We docked in Japan and then they flew us into Korea.”

“Korea has to be the coldest place I have ever been in my life. They called it a police action but it was an all out war. We went back and forth and Seoul took a heck of a beating when we went north and an even bigger hit when we went back.There simply is no way to describe it. Of the platoon I went with just a few made it back and fighting was really rough. It was so cold, even today I still wear two pairs of socks and my feet still hurt.”

“I recall one night my commander came to my foxhole I was in and I did not move as I was so cold. He spoke harshly to me about my not moving to recognize him and I simply told him, “Sir I am just to cold to move.” It was simple back then. Things changed so quickly.

After 58 years they remain married and live a quiet peaceful life in Lutz, Florida enjoying their family with 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

The armistice was signed on July 27, 1953. POW’s could stay where they liked, and a two mile demilitarized was established which exits today. Nearly five million died in the ‘police action’. More then half of these, about 10 percent of Korea’s prewar population - were civilians. And it is still one of the coldest places on earth in the winter.

As Secretary of State Dean Acheson once said, “If the best minds in the world had set out to find us the worst possible location in the world to fight this damn war, the unanimous choice would have been Korea”.

One time I asked my Captain what I should do if the situation changed and he simply stated, ‘Bodie, If I fight -you fight. If I run- you run!’ Those were real simply instructions in those days but it was hard times.

To the men and women who fought in the ‘police action’, and the hard times you endured, our sincere appreciation for your efforts. Like we stated previously, “There is no good war”.

While it was obvious at times speaking about the war was difficult for Bodie, still he still spoke highly of the men he served with and was quick to state that ‘Once a Marine..Always a Marine. “I never understood why they called it a ‘police action’ because it was an out and out war however I guess it’s easy to call it what you want when you are not one of those on the front lines”.

What was his happiest times?

“Oh that’s easy”, Bodie replied with a grin. “ It was when the Commander crawled up to us and told us we were being relieved on the line and going home. I also remember the CARE package that arrived one day from my mother who sent me two fruitcakes and a box of cigars. I sat around with the men and they cried for having the opportunity to eat that fruitcake.” And go home is exactly what Bodie did, returning to his wife Dorry who the Marines who served with Brodie described as, ‘that good lookin’ Georgia cracker’, whenever he displayed a photo she would send him.

4 1/2 Stars Grilled Pork Chops with Fresh Nectarine Salsa

Ingredients

2 nectarines, pitted and diced

1 ripe tomato, seeded and diced 1/4 cup diced onion 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, or to taste salt to taste

1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon chili powder salt and ground black pepper to taste 2 tablespoons olive oil 8 (4 ounce) boneless pork loin chops

Directions 1. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat. Lightly oil grate, and set 4 inches from the heat.

2. To make the salsa, place the nectarines, tomato, onion, cilantro, lime juice, and red pepper flakes in a bowl; toss to blend. Season to taste with salt. Cover, and refrigerate 30 minutes to blend flavors.

3. Stir the cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper together in a small bowl. Place the olive oil in a small bowl. Brush the pork chops with oil, and season both sides evenly with the cumin mixture.

4. Place pork loin chops on the preheated grill. Cook until lightly browned and juices run clear, about 4 minutes on each side. Place pork chops on serving plates, and top with a generous spoonful of salsa.

Raising a

Summer Reader

hen the lazy days of summer arrive and your child’s schedule is packed with swimming, camp, and family vacations, it can be a challenge to find time for reading.

But kids’ reading skills don’t have to stop growing just because school’s out. Here are some ways to make reading a natural part of their summer fun:

Explore your library. Visit your local library

to check out books and magazines that your kids haven’t seen before. Many libraries have summer reading programs, book clubs, and reading contests for even the youngest borrowers. There are often incentives, such as a free book upon completing their summer reading lists. Young kids will feel extra grownup checking out books with their own library card.

Read on the road. Going on a long car trip?

Make sure the back seat is stocked with favorite reads. When you’re not at the wheel, you can read the books aloud. Get some audiobooks (many libraries have large selections) and listen to them together during drive time.

Make your own books. Pick one of your

family’s favorite parts of summer — whether it’s baseball, ice cream, vacation, or the pool — and have your child draw or cut out related pictures from magazines and catalogs. Paste the pictures onto paper to make a book, and then encourage your child to write text for each page. A younger child can dictate the story for you to write down (using your child’s words). When you’re done, read the book together.

Keep in touch. Kids don’t have to go away to write about summer vacation. Even if your family stays home, you can encourage your child to send postcards, letters, or e-mails to friends and relatives. Ask a relative to be your child’s pen pal, and encourage a weekly exchange of letters, postcards, or e-mails.

Keep up the reading rituals. Even if

everything else changes during the summer, keep up the reading routines already in place at your house. Read with your kids every day — whether it’s just before bedtime or under a shady tree on a lazy afternoon. And don’t forget to take a book to the beach! What’s Wrong With Biting My Nails?

runch, crunch, crunch. Do you bite your nails? Some kids and adults do this, especially when they’re feeling nervous. But it’s not a healthy habit.

Your fingernails have a couple of big jobs to do. They protect your fingertips and make it easier for you to pick up tiny things, like loose threads. They also come in handy when you have an itch that needs scratching.

But when you bite your nails, your nails aren’t there to do those things. And by biting them, you are breaking the skin and maybe bringing germs into these openings in your skin. In fact, some people bite their nails and cuticles down so far, they bleed! When germs invade, they can get an infection.

Speaking of germs, there are germs under your fingernails, so when you bite them, those germs can go into your mouth. Think about all the icky stuff you touch all day long, like your baby sister’s drool-dripping pacifier, your stinky gym socks, or slimy earthworms for your science project. You don’t want those nasty germs getting in your mouth.

A clean 1 liter clear soda bottle 3/4 cup of water Vegetable Oil Fizzing tablets (such as Alka Seltzer) Food coloring

WHAT TO DO:

1. Pour the water into the bottle.

2. Use a measuring cup or funnel to slowly pour the vegetable oil into the bottle until it’s almost full. You may have to wait a few minutes for the oil and water separate.

3. Add 10 drops of food coloring to the bottle (we like red, but any color will look great.) The drops will pass through the oil and then mix with the water below.

4. Break a seltzer tablet in half and drop the half tablet into the bottle. Watch it sink to the bottom and let the blobby greatness begin!

5. To keep the effect going, just add another tablet piece. For a true lava lamp effect, shine a flashlight through the bottom of the bottle.

HOW DOES IT WORK:

To begin, the oil stays above the water because the oil is lighter than the water or, more specifically, less dense than water. The oil and water do not mix because of something called “intermolecular polarity.” That term is fun to bring up in dinner conversation. Molecular polarity basically means that water molecules are attracted to other water molecules. They get along fine, and can loosely bond together (drops.) This is similar to magnets that are attracted to each other. Oil molecules are attracted to other oil molecules, they get along fine as well. But the structures of the two molecules do not allow them to bond together. Of course, there’s a lot more fancy scientific language to describe density and molecular polarity, but maybe now you’ll at least look at that vinegrette salad dessing in a whole new way.

When you added the tablet piece, it sank to the bottom and started dissolving and creating a gas. As the gas bubbles rose, they took some of the colored water with them. When the blob of water reached the top, the gas escaped and down went the water. Cool, huh? By the way, you can store your “Blobs In A Bottle” with the cap on, and then anytime you want to bring it back to life, just add another tablet piece.

Lighting fireworks at home isn’t even legal in many areas, so if you still want to use them, be sure to check with your local police department first. If they’re legal where you live, keep these safety tips in mind:

Kids should never play with fireworks. Things like firecrackers, rockets, and sparklers are just too dangerous. If you give kids sparklers, make sure they keep them outside and away from the face, clothing, and hair. Sparklers can reach 1,800°F (982°C) — hot enough to melt gold.

If a child is injured by fireworks, immediately go to a doctor or hospital. If an eye injury occurs, don’t allow your child to touch or rub it, as this may cause even more damage. Also, don’t flush the eye out with water or attempt to put any ointment on it.
