IS YOUR KID entitled? 16 signs to watch for
words by The Editors of Florida Family Living Magazine
“Get me a drink of water,” demanded the seven-yearold sitting girl on the couch. A few minutes later the sibling chimed in with, “Bring me some chips!” The please and thank you manners were painfully missing. Dad was oblivious to what was happening as mom continued to cater their demands throughout the day. For dinner, Mom made them each separate dinners. At the ended of the day, Mom looked exhausted.

I don’t think this Mom or Dad had any clue that they were raising entitled children. They were just trying to give their children the best life they knew how. How can we tell if we’re raising entitled children? Here are 16 signs:

SIGNS YOUR KID IS ENTITLED 1. Asks to be waited on. 2. Requests different food from the other family members. 3. Wants instant gratification without earning it. 4. Has a “what’s in it for me attitude?” 5. Does just enough to get by. 6. Uses emotional blackmail when asked to do something. 7. Lacks gratefulness and/or manners. 8. You end up doing chores for them. 9. They often shows dissatisfaction.

14. Not satisfied - wants more...and more. 15. Overindulges in things like screen time or food. 16. Is disrespectful of things - i.e. clothes, toys. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT NOT TO RAISE ENTITLED KIDS? One big reason is so that you don’t have children that experience the “Failure to Launch Syndrome” - children who live at home until the mid to late twenties or return home after a failed attempt to make it in the world.
EVIDENCE BASED RESULTS NEUROFEEDBACK TRAINING
In addition, when the real world fails to live up to an entitled personas expectations, they often react in non-constructive ways. They get angry and blame others. When people think that they should have everything they want - often for nothing - it comes at the cost of relationships with others and, ultimately, their own happiness. Perhaps the most demoralizing aspect of entitlement is that they lack self- reliance because then never learned the necessary tools to get what they want through hard work and effort. ! SLEEP for SUCCESS Sleep Disordered Breathing may impact your child’s success in school words by Dr. Maribel Santos-Cordero, Dentistry for Children & Adolescents
It’s back to school! Many things need to be accomplished to plan your child’s success for the next school year. What if something as simple as breathing could be interfering with your child’s success in life? Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) is the interruption of breathing impacting a child’s ability to receive the appropriate amount of oxygen and preventing a child from obtaining REM sleep, which is essential for proper growth and development.
8
When your child’s airway is compromised, not allowing for free passage of air and oxygen to the brain, the sleep cycle gets interrupted. This prevents a full night’s sleep, proper brain function for the next day and often leads to several medical complications. Unfortunately, 9 out of 10 children suffer from one or more symptoms of SDB. Symptoms like ADHD/ ADD, bed-wetting, night terrors, poor school performance, snoring and
mouth breathing are just some of the outer signs of the underlying root cause. These symptoms do not selfcorrect. In fact, 92.6% of children will continue to exhibit these symptoms throughout their life and 30% will worsen with age. (JAOS, Brooke Stevens and Dr. Earl Bergersen) WHAT CAUSES SDB? Mouth breathing can cause the tongue to fall back and block the airway. Oral habits such as tongue thrusting, pacifier and thumb/finger

WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? We now have the ability to identify these issues and provide a solution. After a thorough review of the medical history and a dental examination, if the root cause of these problems is of dental nature, an appliance therapy may be indicated. This will properly position the upper and lower jaw relative to each other and to the bones of their face. A great alternative to straightening teeth without braces, this comprehensive, conservative, non-pharmaceutical and noninvasive treatment uses a child’s own ability to guide their growth and development while helping them get the quality night sleep that they deserve. It promotes an open airway, proper growth of the jawbones, better tongue position, proper nasal breathing and eliminates bad oral habits. Appliances can be used in children as young as two and it also helps older children with sleep issues even if growth and development has already occurred.
sucking can cause crooked teeth, jaw misalignment and a narrow palate. Constricted upper and lower jaws can impact the bite, tongue position, teeth alignment and also compromise the airway. If the airway is obstructed, your child may snore or even gasp for air while asleep. Although this may be common, it is not normal. When this happens, the amount of oxygen that reaches the brain for proper development is reduced.
Proper breathing is essential to a healthy life. It doesn’t matter how much sleep your child receives if it is not quality sleep. SDB can be easily overlooked, misdiagnosed, and unfortunately left untreated. Every child should have a dental/ airway assessment before school starts. As a parent, we owe it to our children to give them every chance to succeed in life. !

HEALTHY SNACKS
10 quick, easy & nutritious after school snacks words by Rachael Moshman
My daughter eats lunch at school at 10:30 in the morning. Afternoon snacks are not given. She’s starving by the time she gets home from school at 4:00pm, but the rest of the family isn’t home and ready for dinner for another few hours. Like many children – and adults for that matter - she becomes emotional, grumpy and short-tempered when she’s hungry. Having a snack ready and waiting for her is a necessity in order to avoid a meltdown. It needs to be satisfying, but not so filling that it will ruin her appetite for dinner. Here are our top ten after school snack choices.
bit of mayo, salt and pepper. I serve it with crackers or stuff it inside celery ribs. COTTAGE CHEESE WITH FRUIT This is sweet and satisfying! Add chopped up fruit to a bowl of cottage cheese. Sometimes I add a dash of vanilla extract or cinnamon.
DEVILED EGGS My daughter won’t eat plain hard boiled eggs, but she thinks deviled eggs are fun. I usually throw some grapes or
HAM & CREAM CHEESE ROLL-UPS I spread slices of ham with whipped cream cheese. Then I place a pickle or carrot stick in the middle and roll it up. Sometimes I cut them into slices, which resembles sushi.
PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY SANDWICH Good ‘ol PB&J is a balanced choice that is always a win with most kids. I use natural peanut butter, whole wheat bread and my own homemade freezer jam. Sometimes I spread on mashed up banana in place of the jam. TUNA SALAD & CRACKERS Tuna is full of protein and omega 3’s. My daughter likes it simple with just a

cherry tomatoes on the side to round out the snack. BOWL OF CEREAL It doesn’t get easier than this! We always have several varieties of healthy cereal options on hand to beat boredom. HOMEMADE TRAIL MIX My daughter’s favorite combination consists of dry cheerios, mini pretzels, almonds and raisins. I make a big batch of it and store it in an airtight container. It will stay fresh for weeks. SMOOTHIE I throw everything in the blender in advance and then my daughter can give it a whirl herself when she gets home. There are hundreds of possible smoothie combinations. Simply throw in your child’s favorite fruit, ice and
either milk or juice. Yogurt or protein powder makes it more filling. YOGURT & GRAHAM CRACKERS My daughter likes to dip her graham crackers in the yogurt. Sliced fruit also makes great dippers. MILK & COOKIES Once in a while your child deserves a special snack! There aren’t many pleasures as simple as milk and cookies waiting for you after school. Bonus points if they are freshly baked! This is a first day of school tradition in our house. I have my daughter’s snack waiting on the kitchen counter when she walks in the door. I serve it with a big glass of water, as she’s usually thirsty from recess at the end of the day. Once she eats, she is able to tell me about her day, tackle her homework and have the patience to wait for family dinner time. !

SCHOOL vaccinations shots aren’t fun, but neither is disease, right? words by Ellyn Santiago
Classroom supplies? Check. Backpacks? Check. New clothes? Check. Dorm supplies? Check. Vaccinations? Um, yeah, better check that. While shots aren’t fun, neither are diseases, right Mom & Dad? Most parents are familiar with the standard vaccines, but there are many you may not be aware of. Back-to-school vaccinations are more important than ever before. Don’t wait until the last minute!
For kids starting middle school and young adults headed off to college, there are critically important vaccines they need to have, often before being allowed to attend classes (but not always). And it’s better to get those shots out of the way now. TETANUS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL AGE KIDS The tried and true tetanus shot is a must. The latest and most effective vaccine is the TDAP so make sure that’s on the list for kids ages 11 to 12. This includes acellular pertussis known as whooping cough, which is on the rise.
VACCINATE BOTH GIRLS & BOYS AGAINST HPV The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has had a bit of an image problem mainly because of a lack of education, but here’s the straightforward question parents need to ask themselves: “If I could prevent my child from getting cancer, would I do something about it?” Folks, it really is that straightforward. The HPV9 vaccine protects against cancers caused by HPV infection, which is so common 1 in 4 Americans are infected right now, and another 14 million will become infected every year. Especially teens and young adults according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. [https://www.cdc.gov/hpv/parents/vaccine.html]
AfterSchool_i3-18.indd 12
7/23/18 3:34 PM
It’s ugly but this virus can cause horrific cancers in both genders, despite age. The CDC says there are 32,650 cases of cancers from HPV every year. The vaccine can prevent “about 30,000 cases from ever developing.” [https://www.cdc.gov/hpv/parents/vaccine.html]
Vaccinate your child, girls and boys, beginning at age 9 to prevent cancer caused by the HPV virus. MENINGITIS VACCINES ARE A MUST FOR AGES 11 TO COLLEGE Meningitis causes a swelling around the brain and spinal cord. It can be deadly, so the meningitis vaccine is a must-do. Teens and young adults are among the most likely to get meningitis, and the disease can be bacterial, viral, and sometimes fungal.
AfterSchool_i3-18.indd 13
Viral meningitis isn’t always severe and most will recover but it’s still debilitating, albeit temporarily. The vaccine for ages 11 to 18, the MCV4 vaccine, can prevent viral meningitis.
publication of this article, there were six colleges listed on the CDC website with urgent notifications for students to be vaccinated as outbreaks had been recorded.
Bacterial meningitis, the most severe form of meningitis, is another story and can be deadly. Serogroup B meningococcal disease is airborne and spread from person to person through close contact from coughing to kissing or just among people living in close quarters. Meningitis B can cause loss of limbs and even death. Yes, it’s that frightening.
“The risk is real. This disease is deadly and is in college dorms,” said Stacy Koski RN, BSN of Passport Health. “Even if the college does not require it, though most do, parents need to know the risk is real.” !
Teens entering college should be vaccinated against this most serious form of meningitis, and it’s more common than one might think. As of the

GENIUS TIPS for back-to-school words by Christa Melnyk Hines
Every parent has that one trick up their sleeve that helps make life just a little simpler in the midst of a hectic school year. Read on for some of their best tips, clever tricks and genius hacks for back to school. PLAN YOUR MEALS Steer clear of the drive-thru on hectic evenings by taking 10 minutes each weekend to plan simple meals for the week. With a complete grocery list in hand, head to the store to purchase
everything you’ll need. To further simplify planning, prep food when you get home from the store, filing favorite recipes for easy reference and maintaining a well-stocked pantry. Theme nights like pasta on Mondays, tacos on Tuesday, etc., can also help. Ask your family for their suggestions too.
STOCK THE FREEZER Stash your freezer with healthy casseroles, soups, sauces and crockpot meals to make dinnertime a no-brainer on busy weeknights. Try to make your cooking always do double duty. Make a little extra of everything and if you don’t want it right away, freeze it.
SCHEDULE GROCERY DELIVERY More grocery stores now offer online ordering and delivery services, helpful for families who dislike grocery shopping or struggle to stick to a budget when there.
ESTABLISH A SNACK/BROWN BAG LUNCH STATION Designate a shelf in your kitchen or pantry for parent-approved snacks and lunch items. Tape a list inside the cupboard door with lunch ideas. On Sundays, pre-pack snacks that kids can easily grab like trail mix, pretzels, granola bars or cereal. Stock the refrigerator with fruits and veggies that have been pre-washed/cut, as well as cheese and yogurt sticks. To save time in the mornings, help your children make their lunches and pack their snacks the night before. SHARE THE DAILY ACTION PLAN Laurie Loudenback hands her kids, ages 10 and 12, a clipboard each morning which includes the day’s schedule, chores, and screen time limits. “This chart has been pretty lifechanging,” says Loudenback, whose husband Scott designed it. “The first thing the kids say in the morning is ‘I need my chart.’”

like the Time Timer app and set a goal. For example, after he completes 10 problems, take a break for a quick snack. ATTEND BACK-TO-SCHOOL FUNCTIONS Help your child get back into the school groove by attending school orientations, ice cream socials or sneak-a-peeks. “Even reconnecting with one or two friends or meeting a teacher in person before the first day of school can make a difference to a child,” Dawkins says. CONNECT IN A MEMORABLE WAY
SET UP A MASTER CALENDAR Post a white board with the week’s calendar to help everyone in the family know what to expect in the coming week. Use color-coded dry erase markers for each family member’s activities and cold or hot lunch preferences. HOLD FAMILY MEETINGS Alexis Sanchez, mom of four, says she gathers her family on Sunday nights to discuss the week ahead, including upcoming activities and “to brainstorm any kinks” that need to be worked out in the schedule. SPRUCE UP BACKPACKS Extend the life of a much-loved backpack by giving it a back-to-school cleaning. Depending on the material, backpacks can generally be hand washed, spot cleaned or placed in a laundry bag or pillow case and run through the washing machine. If you hand wash it, soak it in warm water for 15 minutes with a teaspoon of laundry detergent. Rinse well and air dry. MANAGE PAPERWORK Everyday after school, Sanchez says, “we have a mandatory ‘empty your book bag’ rule”. Her children 16
file important documents like those that need to be signed by a parent into an office divider. Label a folder with the name of your child and school year to easily collect artwork and other keepsakes throughout the year. Sanchez keeps her folders in a plastic file box. CREATE A HOMEWORK STATION Designate a well-lit place in your home where homework can be completed without distractions. Create a homework caddy stocked with notebook paper, pens, pencils, crayons, colored pencils, rulers, and highlighters ... anything your child might need to complete an assignment. MAKE A HOMEWORK PLAN If your child struggles with organization, go through their backpack together. Make a stack for the night’s homework and help your child prioritize what needs to be completed first. Use a calendar to help them plan long-term assignments.
Be ready to meet a few new parents at back-to-school functions who you’ll want to reconnect with later. Mom of two, Kristal Ronnebaum suggests handing out a family calling card. “It’s a method of sharing your contact information in a fun and creative way,” Ronnebaum says. You can also hand the card to babysitters, carpool drivers and new neighbors (attached to a small housewarming gift). ENCOURAGE REST A successful school year requires quality sleep. “Start edging those bedtimes back a week or two in advance of school starting,” Dawkins says. Maintain a regular evening routine that helps your child unwind before bed, such as a warm bath or shower and reading time. Also, build unstructured time into your child’s weekly schedule for playing with friends and pursuing creative endeavors. !
USE A TIMER If your child gets overwhelmed by lengthy math worksheets or other difficult assignments, try using a timer

FIRST day JITTERS conquer their fears! words by Christa Melnk Hines
As families prepare their students for the school season, educators weigh in on best practices for managing the transition back to school. GET INTO A ROUTINE
Before school starts, adjust your child’s bedtime and wake them up five to 10 minutes earlier each day leading up to the first day. Also, post a morning task chart. “By making a visual schedule, kids know what is expected and check off the pictures or word phrases as they do each one,” says Tara Walrod, a school counselor. If your child is ready on time, offer rewards like free time before school. PLAN AHEAD
“Try and pick a day to get school supplies or school clothes when less people are shopping to help enjoy the time together,” suggests Molly Gafney, a fifth grade teacher. LOG IN TO SCHOOL’S WEBSITE
“Most districts post everything from PTA information to upcoming events to curriculum information and even 18
videos and power points,” says Steve Cook, a director of curriculum and instruction.“Clicking on those links only takes a few minutes, but the information gained will be priceless.” ORIENT YOUR CHILD
Schedule a school tour with the school counselor or principal if you are new to the community or if your child has special needs, which can heighten their sense of anxiety, advises fifth grade teacher Anne Braun. Attend back-to-school events like Sneak-a-Peeks, meet-and-greets, and school orientations. These are “a great way for students to walk around the building, get comfortable with
their surroundings and re-connect or meet new friends,” says middle school principal Shelly Nielsen. DISCUSS FEARS
Listen to your child’s concerns about the upcoming year. Offer strategies to help them work through them. For example, middle schoolers often worry about opening their lockers. Give them a combination lock to help them practice. “If they are worried about making new friends, act out how to approach someone new or start a new conversation,” Gafney says. “Also, ask the school counselor for ideas.“Many times, schools assign new

students peer mentors the first few days of school,” Nielsen says. PRACTICE DROP-OFF Hash out transportation details with your child before school starts. If you plan to drive your child to school, do a dry run.
“Make sure your child is getting out of the correct side of the car, can shut the door themselves, and knows where the front door is located,” recommends Jessica Adair, a school counselor. CONSIDER HEALTH MATTERS
To help your child stay healthy throughout the year, make sure they get adequate rest and stay hydrated. “When you’re feeling sick, stay home. You want to spread love with your friends, but you don’t want to spread germs!” says school nurse Destinee Peghee, RN, BSN, MBA. ENCOURAGE INDEPENDENCE.
Many parents walk their kids in on the first day of school. After that, encourage your child to walk to class on their own to help them build a sense of independence and responsibility. “We like for boys and girls to feel that sense of accomplishment and pride by successfully making their way to their classrooms on their own by the second week of school,”Walrod says. As kids approach middle school, encourage them to advocate and take responsibility for themselves. “Allow your child to be more responsible for completing homework, packing their own lunches and cleaning/organizing their backpacks,” Braun says. CELEBRATE THE FIRST DAY
Many families take photos in the same place every year. Others plan first day celebrations by visiting the ice
cream counter or a favorite restaurant or picnic with other families at a nearby playground. “I love when families have rituals around the first day of school,” says Brian Watson, an elementary school principal.“These rituals are counted on every year to help a child relax and know that it will be a good year.” MANAGE THROUGH BAD DAYS.
After a long day at school, your child might come home feeling irritable, tired or frustrated with a problem. “Listen and empathize. Be careful not to jump in too quickly or overreact to what is really a small problem or conflict,”Walrod advises. Instead, encourage creative problemsolving. If your child is complaining of anxiety-related tummy aches, make a plan with the school nurse or counselor. “The most important thing is to get your student in the building,” Peghee says.“Don’t let them talk you into leaving-they’ll have stomach aches for the next two months.” CONNECT WITH TEACHERS
“Every educator wants every child to literally RUN to school because they can’t wait to be there,”Watson says. “When that isn’t the case, we want to work with you to try and figure out how we can work together to help lower your chid’s anxiety and get into learning.”
Managing First-Day Jitters Tips • Tell your child how you manage anxiety-provoking transitions. • Practice deep breathing. • Remind yourself “you got this.” • Go on a walk, shoot hoops or bike ride. • Hug a loved one. • Talk it out. Source: Jessica Adair, school counselor

HOMEWORK help tips to ease frustration and boost focus words by Christa Melnyk Hines
By the time Meira Mednick’s daughter was in third grade, homework time had morphed into lengthy, embattled evenings fraught with angry tears as frustrated daughter and frazzled mom squared off. “My daughter began showing signs of difficulty in focus on homework in kindergarten. By second grade we were drowning,” Mednick says. Mednick tried tactics like feeding her first grader an early dinner as soon as she got home from school and giving her time to relax before starting homework. Instead, “We ended up spending the next two years in a tug of war of time, and many tears were shed,” she says. Many parents can relate and dread the contentious homework 20
hour, which can plunder an otherwise peaceful evening. Thanks to the distractions of technology, the inability to focus is a growing problem in our culture. The number of children who are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) also continues to rise. The Centers for Disease Control reports that ADHD is “one of the most common chronic conditions of childhood.” The ability to focus is crucial to achieving goals. How can we create a more calming homework atmosphere that will enhance our child’s ability to concentrate and get the job done quickly--without the draining drama? WORK IN SHORT BURSTS Kids get overwhelmed with long worksheets and multiple assignments. Break homework into timed chunks. After a busy day at school, parents can typically expect their youngsters to focus on a task for one minute for each year of their age. That means a six-year-old should be given a two or three minute break every six minutes.
Create smart brain breaks. During the timed breaks engage your child in short activities that help reorganize and refocus the brain, like jumping jacks,

playing with Legos or playdoh, or snacking on crunchy carrots or pretzel rods or something chewy such as fruit leather. STRIKE A POSE Yoga stretches and breathing exercises can calm and re-energize a tired body. Balancing poses like bird or airplane, or even a full body twist, combines breathing and concentrated stretching movements.
• Increases reading levels up to 4 years in only 60 hours!
INTEGRATE NATURAL ELEMENTS Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have found that including ornamental plants in a learning area can further enhance a child’s ability to concentrate and learn.
• Does your child require tutoring year after year? • Has your child repeated a grade? • Is your child prepared for the next grade level?

“And weirdly, the more involved the child is in the plant’s life or maintenance, the more learning goes on,” says Magalie Rene, a classroom design consultant.

BANANAS for birthdays! 10 ideas that are bound to be a hit words by the Editors of Family Living Magazine
4
1
WEAR THE KIDS OUT. Sarasota and Bradenton offers lots of energy burning options! Places like the much-utilized Bounce Down Under and Sky Zone let your kids bounce ’til they drop, while ATA Karate offers more guided activities to get it all out. Whatever your preference, all you have to do to guarantee a good time is show up with your spring-loaded child… then enjoy the long nap you will all inevitably be taking later that afternoon.
2
DO THE HOKEY POKEY. Have a roller skating or ice skating party! Remember those? They still exist! And this isn’t just for the older kids, either. Watching a bunch of young children try to skate for the first time is HILARIOUS. In addition to witnessing your child have a blast racing, playing limbo, and learning to skate, you will enjoy playing a fun game I like to call, “Count the number of things that have changed in the last 20 years.” Ellenton Ice & Sports Complex has great party options for the first timer or seasoned skater.
3
FOSTER CREATIVITY. Let Arts A Blaze Studio host an art party! Kids will spend 90 minutes painting, with a staff artist dedicated to your group to assist with welcoming guests, pottery and paint selection, and more. The kids practice their new skills in a space that you do not have to clean up. You just have to decide what package you want, and figure out how long you’re going to keep their masterpieces before they “accidentally” find their way into child artwork heaven. 32
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MOO! Have a party on a real working dairy farm at Dakin Dairy Farm. Kids will have a blast while they take a farm tour, hayride, watch a pig race, go on a fossil dig, sing around a camp fire and more! All you have to do is bring the cake and serving supplies. This is a place where fun and learning come together for a one of a kind birthday experience.
5
USE YOUR IMAGINATION.
The Children’s Garden provides the costumes, your children provide the imagination. Follow the yellow brick road into a world of make-believe where fairies dance in Fairy Land, pirates set sail on the Black Pearl, hobbits are busy in Hobbitville and Snuffy the Dragon keeps a watchful eye in the Monster Garden. It is an enchanted place to host your child’s birthday party ... either in their shaded picnic area or the quaint Caterpillar Cottage.
6
LEARN ABOUT ANIMALS. Try throwing a birthday bash at the Sarasota Jungle Gardens! Not only do you get a private party room to
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
AfterSchool_i3-18.indd 32
7/23/18 3:35 PM
play educational animal games, but you and your guests receive all-day admission to the jungle gardens. Two animals are brought to your party for close-up interaction. Not going to lie, I’m hoping one of my daughters gets invited to a jungle party soon.
7
KEEP THE COST DOWN &
THE FUN UP. Book a party room at a low-key restaurant! You may be surprised at how little entertainment you actually need to provide children when they have pizza, balloons, and each other. You can’t go wrong with a party at Evies Pizza to support local business, but Chick-Fil-A is always a fun and inexpensive option.
Bring Your
PARTY TO LIFE! • Packages for 15 to 40 or more guests • All day fun for the whole family • Food included • Recognition at animal shows • Animal interactions • Reserved seating area
For more information, visit our website or call 941-355-1112 ext. 307
8
HAVE A POOL PARTY. Don’t have a pool at home? The YMCA or Sun N Fun are great water facilities! Kids will swim and splash for hours. Sun N Fun offers ‘dive-in movie parties’, and their 3.5 story Hippo Slide is always a hit with the kids. YMCA offers pizza, BBQ, fun toys, water games and so much more!
9

LET SOMEONE ELSE
DO THE WORK! Outsource your entertainment providers. There are always face painters, clowns, and even princesses that will come and run the whole party for you so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the laughter. Oh! Don’t forget the ice cream trucks. Purple Belle Ice Cream and Sunny Days Ice Cream are two local favorites.
10
DO IT ALL YOURSELF? If you love planning and hosting parties (and you consider yourself to be a Pinterest DIY queen) then a themed party at your house may be right up your alley! TIP: The Dollar Store is a great place to get cheap party supplies for summer birthday themes!
