CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Post Pandemic by Dr. Stacie Herrera, Herrera Psychology

There is no denying that the last two years have taken a toll on child development. As a global community, we have changed how we interact with others to maintain our health and safety. Children have taken notice, and they may have developed fears of illness or making others sick along the way. The world may be opening up again, but these developed fears are still very present for our young ones. If you had a death in the family due to COVID, your child’s behaviors around illness and wanting to keep others healthy might be concerning. Your children may be especially hesitant to visit, hug, or interact with elderly or immunocompromised relatives. They may want to wear their masks or

6

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

refuse to go near their grandparents. There may even be changes in appetite, withdrawal, or noticeable changes in behavior such as regression in toileting or sleeping habits. When these behaviors start to appear, or any development delay, the question often becomes what to do and when to reach out for help. WHAT TO DO: CHILD DEVELOPMENT POST PANDEMIC If you notice slight changes in your child’s behavior, or extreme resistance to interacting with loving relatives, it may be time to have a new conversation about health and safety. It will be especially important to model the level of care you wish your children to exhibit. Children watch caregivers closely for cues on how to behave. I don’t know about you, but

I’m not always clear on how to maintain health and safety, given the confusing information and expectations happening every day. Take the time to communicate your expectations with your children. Let them know how the immune system works in a developmentally appropriate way. Be very clear about hugs and interactions with elderly and immunocompromised relatives. It may be necessary to teach your children to ask: “Are you accepting hugs?” Actively teach your child about worry thoughts and strategies to manage big emotions. Model those strategies. Create a time of day to openly discuss worries. Be sure to validate their worries, “that does sound scary,” but not minimize their feelings. Provide reassurance and ask your child to identify how they feel when they are worried. If you find that

your child’s fears are contributing to emotional meltdowns or uncharacteristic behaviors, please reach out to a therapist, psychologist, or social worker. Your child does not have to be in an active crisis to reach out to a professional. Your child may benefit from as little as a few sessions to learn strategies to manage big emotions. CHILD DEVELOPMENT UPDATES FROM THE CDC The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently updated the checklists for development milestones for infant and young children’s development for the first time in over 20 years. You may be wondering what this means for your child. The guidelines are meant to eliminate confusion and alarm while ensuring children who need additional resources are identified earlier. Some of the changes to the guidelines include:

Removing vague language like “may” or “begins” when referring to certain milestones

Removing duplicate milestones

Revising and expanding tips and activities to promote child development

Identifying new social and emotional milestones

There is no perfect way to identify if your child is experiencing development problems (pandemic related or not). My best advice is to trust your own gut instinct and knowledge about your child. You know best what brings them joy, what overstimulates them, and when they are overtaken by fear or grief. If you are looking for resources, don’t be afraid to reach out to the local experts in your area. The earlier our little ones get help for developmental delays, the better the outcome will be.! MAKING A difference One Child at a Time By Maribel Santos-Cordero, DMD

PEDIATRIC DENTAL DISEASE IS AMERICA’S MOST COMMON CHRONIC CHILDHOOD ILLNESS. Cavities can form at any age. Despite parents’ best efforts, 60% of children will have a cavity or filling between the ages of 5-9y/o.

The mouth can harbor germs that subsequently are aspirated, resulting in airway infections.

8

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

Dental caries, gum disease and other oral conditions can cause millions of children pain so severe that it affects their ability to eat, sleep and learn, communicate, and thrive.

Dental caries is 5x more common than asthma.

Children with Early Childhood Caries may be severely underweight because of pain and disinclination to eat. Nutritional deficiencies during childhood can interfere with remembering, problem solving and decisionmaking process.

Healthy teeth are fundamental to the overall health and development of a child. Early detection and timely intervention can prevent the need for more extensive and expensive care often required when problems have gone unrecognized and/or untreated.

DID YOU KNOW? MOM PLAYS A BIG ROLE IN THE PREVENTION OF DENTAL DISEASE Your nutrition and oral health can help your baby’s teeth even before birth. Baby teeth start developing during the third trimester and the first year. Enamel defects are common with low birthweight or illness in the newborn infant.

YOUR BABY NEEDS A TO SEE A PEDIATRIC DENTIST BY AGE ONE Start oral care early and visit the pediatric dentist by the first birthday so that any problems may be detected, treated, or even avoided completely.

PLAQUE FORMS EVERY TIME YOU EAT Start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as the first tooth appears. Even if your children are very independent, help them brush. Children do not develop the coordination to do good brushing & flossing until they are about 8 y/o.

NOT ALL CAVITIES ARE VISIBLE TO THE PLAIN EYE Floss your child’s teeth to avoid cavities in-between teeth. It helps prevent those tricky cavities that can only be seen on X-Rays or once they are big enough to start hurting.

TOOTH DECAY IS A BACTERIAL INFECTION You can spread it by kissing your child on the lips and sharing food & drinks once the first tooth comes in.

XYLITOL IS A SUGAR THAT HELPS PREVENT CAVITIES Chewing gum with Xylitol can also help you reduce the amount of plaque and tartar that sticks to your teeth.

CHILDREN WHO RECEIVE SEALANTS ARE 70% LESS PRONE TO DEVELOP A CAVITY Most permanent molars and some primary molars have very deep pits and fissures. Sealants act as a barrier to protect the chewing sides from the acid attack of food and plaque build-up.

MORE THAN 25 % OF SPORTS RELATED INJURIES INVOLVE THE MOUTH AND TEETH Be prepared to prevent a dental injury by using a sports mouthguard.

CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL HEALTHCARE NEEDS REQUIRE A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO DENTAL CARE Some children with oral aversion, sensory defensiveness, hyper-sensitivity to sensory-visual-auditory input or some other healthcare needs require assistance in keeping good oral hygiene habits as well as specialized dental care.

CHILDREN WHO LOVE GOING TO THE DENTIST WILL BE ADULTS WHO ENJOY ORAL CARE Most adults who fear the dentist report having a negative experience when they were young. Pediatric dentists provide the setting for a positive experience by allowing children to explore dentistry in a nonthreatening atmosphere. Dr. Maribel Santos Cordero is a board-certified pediatric dentist in Lakewood Ranch dedicated to the oral health of children, adolescents, and children with special needs. She believes in taking a preventive approach to dentistry and helping children achieve their full potential by providing all the necessary tools to achieve optimal oral health. Getting Ready for

OVERNIGHT getting ready for OVERNIGHT CAMP by Tanni Haas, Ph.D.

Tips for First–Timers — and Their Parents By Tanni Haas, Ph. D.

There are few things more exciting in a kid’s life than their first sleepaway camp. How do you prepare your kids – and yourself – for this big event? Drawing on my own experiences as the parent of a teenager who’s a happy camper, as well as conversations with other parents, I’ve identified 8 things you should do. PREPARE FOR CAMP TOGETHER You want your kids to take ownership of this exciting experience. To do that, prepare for camp together: shop together for all the stuff on the packing list and pack jointly using luggage that isn’t too difficult to carry. You should also build excitement by talking to your kids about all the incredible things they’re going to experience, and explain the rules and expectations of the camp.

10

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

PACK CLOTHING FOR ALL KINDS OF WEATHER

SPEAK TO PARENTS IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

When you pack your kids’ clothes, don’t pack their best items. Whether it’s a sports camp or any other type of camp, there are likely to be outdoor activities where clothing will get stained, torn, or ruined. Pack their most durable clothes, and make sure that there are clothes for all kinds of weather – both sunny, warm days and rainy, cool days. Most importantly, label everything with your kids’ names. A good friend of ours forgot to do that for their daughter’s first sleepaway camp. She came home with all kinds of wild clothes they’d never seen before.

No matter how confident your kids are that they’re going to be just fine without you, it’s always a good idea to bring them some comfort from home to camp. Reach out to other parents from your kids’ school or your neighborhood to see if they plan on sending their kids to the same camp. Most camps let parents request that their kids bunk with one or more of their regular friends. They’re going to meet lots of other kids and make lots of new friends as well.

HAVE A SLEEPOVER – OR TWO Your kids are going to be away from you, possibly for the first time, for an extended period of time. Some kids have absolutely no problem adjusting; others need to dip their feet in the water slowly, so to speak. Organize a couple of sleepovers with their friends – and do it at their friends’ houses – to get them used to being away from you.

CONTRIBUTE MONEY TO THE CANDY STORE Most sleepaway camps have a store where kids can buy candy with money that parents have contributed to an account. Ask the camp director what amount parents typically contribute to this account – and then contribute the same amount. Kids compare themselves to other kids, and no kid wants to be the odd one out with less money to buy candy than everyone else. Conversely, you don’t want to over-contribute to the candy account.

COMMUNICATION AND CARE PACKAGES

DON’T HANG AROUND TOO LONG WHEN YOU ARRIVE

Find out what the camp’s policy is when it comes to communicating with your kids via email, letters and care packages. Are you allowed a certain number of emails or letters? How many care packages are you permitted to send, and are their rules about what you can and can’t send? If you’re allowed to include toys in the care packages, choose things that your kids can enjoy together with the other campers, like Frisbees and playing cards, instead of toys that only they can enjoy themselves. For our son’s first sleepaway camp, my spouse and I sent several decks of playing cards with the first care package. The kids ended up playing cards with the camp counselors until late at night.

When you finally arrive at camp for the drop-off, do yourself – and your kids – the favor and leave once they’re settled in. Bring them to their cabin, help them unpack if necessary, and then extract yourself as quickly as possible. Your kids are eager to meet all the other campers, and there’s nothing as embarrassing as a parent who lingers for what appears to be no good reason. Let them start bonding to and connecting with their counselors and the other kids. DON’T WORRY - THEY’RE GOING TO BE FINE Once you’re back in the car, take a deep breath, and then head home. Your kids are going to be fine, and so will you. Trust me. !

choosing the right By Tanni Haas, Ph. D.

It’s no exaggeration to say that the one event kids really look forward to all year is the summer camp. But how do you choose the right one for them? Based on my experiences as the parent of a teenager as well as conversations with other parents, I’ve figured out the top six things to consider.

It goes without saying that cost is an important factor, especially if you have more than one kid. Summer camps can range widely in price, depending on whether they’re bare-bones camps with a limited number of activities, or camps that offer a lot of expensive activities like overnight trips. But don’t just consider the price of the camp. Also consider how much money you’ll have left for other summer activities like family trips. Kids’ summer vacations are long and can feel even longer if the whole family has to stay home for many weeks because you didn’t have any money left to do other things. I learned this the hard way the first time our son went to a summer camp. The camp was so expensive that we ended up not having money for our planned family vacation.

Another aspect to consider is the distance of the camp from your home. If the camp is far away, you may end up spending a lot of time and money driving to and from camp. This issue is made even more challenging if you’ve kids who go to different camps, at different times, and for different lengths of time. A good friend of ours spends a lot of the summer crisscrossing the U.S. on the way to and from the different camps that his kids go to.

14

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

One of the biggest choices every parent faces is whether to send their kids to a day camp or a sleepaway camp. In my experience it’s best to start with a day camp until your kids express interest in going to a sleepaway camp. Believe me: they’re fully aware even at a young age that sleepaway camps exist and that some of their friends already have attended them. If your kids haven’t said they’d like to go to a sleepaway camp, it’s probably because they’re not ready yet. It can also be a good idea to send your kids to both day and sleepaway camps. While sleepaway camps give them a chance to experience real independence and to make new friends, day camps let them come home in the late afternoon and spend some time with their regular friends.

Consider the types of activities in which you kids would be engaged when choosing a camp. Some kids enjoy sitting quietly inside focusing on arts and crafts; other kids prefer being outdoors doing sports. You could choose to simply follow your kids’ preferences and let them decide, or you could use the summer camp as a chance to challenge your kids to step outside their comfort zone and try something different. My spouse certainly prefers the second option. Since our son first began going to summer camp, my spouse has insisted that he try activities that we can’t offer him in our regular cityslicker lives, like canoeing, water skiing, and zip-lining.

FOR YOUR KIDS

Finally, ask yourself whether you want to send your kids to one camp for all or part of the summer, or whether you want your kids to go to multiple camps. There are good reasons for either choice. On the one hand, sending your kids to a single camp can save you time and money shuttling between camps. It would also let your kids cultivate friendships for a longer period of time. On the other hand, sending your kids to several camps would let them to explore different interests and make more new friends.!

Find out if the camps you are interested in are specialized and focus on one activity, or if they offer multiple activities. Many camps are geared toward one specific activity, like chess, coding, writing, or more sports-oriented activities like basketball or soccer. Other camps offer kids a range of activities from sports, to crafts, to performing arts. Camps that focus on a single activity typically aim to strengthen kids’ abilities in that particular area. Camps that offer many different activities try to introduce kids to different things. So ask yourself – and your kids - whether the goal is simply to have fun and try new things, or whether the goal is to enhance some particular skill of theirs.

Our new Learn To Row and Sail Camp gives campers the chance to learn the precise skills required to row a single scull, while in the afternoons, they’ll learn the basics of sailing in their own boats! Archery and Freshwater Fishing return for 2022 as a morning-only camp. Under the instruction of National Archery Assn. certified instructors, campers will learn to be independent, safe archers. When it’s time for rods and reels, kids will learn basic skills, types of tackle, casting, bait and more, both on land and on water. They’ll also learn boating safety before they take to the water in small vessels to fish! FUN FAMILY

activities To Try This Summer

By UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County As the calendar rolls into spring, many of us start looking for outdoor activities for ourselves and our families. The warmer weather and bright, sunny days—before the summer rains roll in—make for ideal exploring conditions. From learning about bees, birds and other pollinators you can find around your own home to building a kid-friendly solar “oven” that can make s’mores, you can find something exciting to keep busy and keep learning, all with an eye on preserving and protecting our resources.

GARDENING

U-PICK

Grow your own fresh produce in a Florida-friendly, backyard garden. Sarasota County Extension has a web page dedicated to getting an edible garden started and maintaining it for seasons to come: tiny.cc/ufsaraext_edibleweb. You’ll find webinar recordings, downloadable documents, blog post links and more on topics like hot-season produce and Florida growing seasons.

If home gardening isn’t your thing, but you still want that “farm to table” experience, try taking a trip to a local “u-pick” outlet. Many local growing operations offer this option, with an array of crops available. You get fresh air and fresh produce. Plus, it’s a great way to help teach children about growing crops and how food gets to the plate, while supporting local farmers. (Note: self-pick operations charge for produce.)

COOKING

COMPOSTING

If you’ve hauled in some fresh produce, cooking together is a great way to test out new skills (and taste buds). You can find a range of tasty, healthy, easy-to-follow recipes for seasonal fruit and other items at Extension’s familynutritionprogram.org/ recipes/ site. If you have extra produce, take a sustainable approach by preserving or dehydrating some produce for use later.

On the back end of gardening and cooking, try your hand at composting. This practice— simple to set up and operate at home—can help a typical home convert food waste and other organic scraps each month to a product that can help your garden or landscape. Get the basics of composting, step-bystep instructions for building simple compost bins, and even information on composting with worms at sarasota.ifas.ufl.edu/compost.

-An Equal Opportunity Institution. UF/IFAS Extension, University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Dr. Andra Johnson, Dean for UF/IFAS Extension. Sarasota County prohibits discrimination in all services, programs or activities. View the complete policy at www.scgov.net/ADA.

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

“LIFE” VIDEOS

POLLINATORS/INSECTS

Extension also has a running series of short videos focused on exploring nature and science. Each video in the “Learning in Florida’s Environment” (LIFE) series tackles a single topic, like insect observation or how hurricanes form, and explains it for children in grades 3-5. View the series at tiny.cc/ufsaraext_lifevideos.

Family-friendly outdoor education can be as easy as it is amazing. Try observing insects in your yard or at a local park. List the insects you can identify. Then, research to learn about their life cycles, what they eat, how they contribute to a healthy ecosystem, and more. Discover the ecosystem services that insects provide.

SUSTAINABILITY

EXPLORATION BACKPACKS

Got children interested in making our planet a better place to live? Help them learn about sustainability, with a free solar energy class geared to a younger audience. They’ll learn the basics of solar power, and get “hands on” by building a makeshift solar “oven” that heats up s’mores. Look for “solar energy for kids” at scgovlibrary.librarymarket.com/events.

Another way to beef up your science skills is with… backpacks. Extension developed exploration kits that come in backpacks, available for free checkout at any Sarasota County public library. Choose the Family Green Living Kit (tiny.cc/ufsaraext_sustainkits) to get a better grasp on conservation, sustainability, and “green” living. Or, go with the Explore Your World backpack (tiny.cc/ ufsaraext_explorebackpack) for a closer look at nature in your yard, park or elsewhere.

4-H

LIBRARIES

4-H has camps, clubs, and other activities open to all youth, age 5-18. That includes the return this summer of the popular “Explore Your Environment” day camp, which takes campers out to explore nature and science at Sarasota County parks. (Note: there is a camp fee.) Clubs, which typically run yearround, focus on topics from art to livestock to plant sciences. Learn more at sarasota.ifas.ufl.edu/4h.

And, finally, though not technically an outdoor activity, Extension partners with Sarasota County Libraries throughout the year to deliver a range of free classes, programs and other events at local public libraries. Topics run the gamut offered by Extension, from agriculture to wildlife. Find something to explore at ufsarasotaext.eventbrite.com.

UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County partners local, state and federal resources to translate research into community initiatives, classes, and volunteer opportunities related to 4-H youth development; agriculture; gardening and landscaping; natural resources; nutrition and healthy living; and sustainability. To learn more about all Extension has to offer by visiting sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/sarasota, and find all Extension events at ufsarasotaext.eventbrite.com. !
