Those dreaded words. How do they make you feel? Guilty? Exhausted? Feel like you need to find something for the kid to do? No more. Children need to sit in their own boredom, it gives them the space they need to grow. It’s time to love “I’m bored.”

“I’M BORED” Why You Should Do Nothing When Your Child Says, “I’m Bored!” by Dr. Vanessa Lapointe, R. Psych.
What does your gut do when you hear the two words every parent dreads? “I’m bored.” Maybe it is because of the incredible guilt that a lot of today’s busy parents carry around with them, or maybe because in the grand scheme it feels like the path of least resistance, but many of us are tempted to respond to those dreaded two words with a running list of options.
4
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
Best case (and often pie-in-thesky) scenario is the child grabs onto one of your ideas. Worst case, you frustratingly give in to another 30 minutes of screen time just to get them out of your hair.
building forts, burying treasure, and tinkering with little inventions. I have visions of him utterly absorbed in those tasks, lost in the world of his imagination, but more importantly in the world of HIM.
But what if the next time your child says, “I’m bored,” you just smiled at them and said, “I love bored”? Not only might that be incredibly freeing for you, but it also is actually really good for your child’s development. Why? Children need to sit in their own boredom for the world to become quiet enough that they can hear themselves. It is only when we are surrounded by
Knowing this about my husband, is it any surprise that he is now a mechanical engineer? He is still building and tinkering and inventing. This is who he is, the essence of what makes him tick. The boredom of his childhood, the space created for him to just be, lives on in its impact today in big and defining ways.
just nod and say “I love bored” and offer zero options for filling in that void of nothing. And then watch. Watch as your child’s mind becomes quiet. Watch as their internal sense of self takes over. Watch as their sense of being comes bubbling out of them and spills over into this incredible energy to create and do and conquer. And then watch as they grow into confident, capable, driven young people. Boredom is magical. Boredom is the elixir of creativity and passion. Boredom is the pathway to drive and ambition.
Children need to sit in their own boredom for the world to become quiet enough that they can hear themselves. nothing that something comes alive on the inside. The constant stimulation of today’s reality makes arriving at that place of stillness really challenging for a lot of kids. Screens are everywhere and become a mind-numbing outlet. Scheduled programming abounds, and worse, feeling like our kids need to keep up, we register them in all of that programming. School demands are significant and increasingly leak out of the school hours into the home hours. And busy has become the new “cool” - almost like there is an unspoken message to all of us that you have worth if you are busy. When my husband was young, his family lived in a rural setting with lots of space to roam. He tells stories of spending every available hour digging out back,
Children need to sit in the nothingness of boredom in order to arrive at an understanding of who they are. And just as important, children need to sit in the nothingness of boredom to awaken their own internal drive to be. So many parents have come to me over the years desperate to crack the riddle of why their children appear to “lack motivation” or “not care.” The sad truth in many of these cases is that this was never allowed to come out of their children. The child’s sense of self and the child’s sense of being was never allowed to awaken. There was simply not enough stillness.

STOP POWER
struggles
3 Words that will Stop Power Struggles in their tracks. “I hear you” is a phrase that I encourage you to try the next time your child complains about doing homework, washing the dishes, taking a bath, or whatever the complaint department problem is at the moment. “I hear you” is a great way to respond when your child is itching for an argument. You will find that the fewer words you use, the better your children will listen. Studies have shown kids will start to stop listening after only 30 words. It’s not much to get your point 6
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
across. So, give yourself a break, next time you see a power struggle ready to ensue, instead of launching into a traditional parenting lecture like “it’s part of being a family,” or “your job is to go to school and get good grades,” or “you’ll thank me when you’re older” just say, “I hear you. I didn’t like doing spelling homework either” or “I hear you, emptying the dishwasher isn’t my favorite thing to do either.” Sometimes kids just need to know they are being heard… that you get them … that there is an empathetic
ear. Does it make the undesirable task any more desirable? No, but it gives you a moment of emotional connection and usually diffuses the power struggle more quickly. At the same time, it reinforces that you are on their team. Getting your kids on board with out the fuss and grumpiness, now that’s a win-win most parents love to score. Next time you’re faced with a complaining kid, look them right in the eye with a sincere and knowing sigh and say,“I hear you.” It works! !

HEALTY living FOR 2017 Make 5210 your goal every day! By Diane Shipley, Sarasota Department of Health
The New Year is a great time to set healthy weight goals and there are free community resources to help you and your family succeed. “We want the healthy choice to be the easy choice,” says Sarasota County Healthy Weight Coordinator Jess Armstrong. “Several years ago, our community through the Healthy Sarasota County collaborative adopted
8
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
5210, a tested message that takes the guesswork out of how to stay healthy and has proven successful in other places across Florida and the U.S. This simple message promotes healthy everyday choices using 4 simple guidelines: 5 servings of fruits/vegetables; no more than 2 hours of recreational screen time; at least 1 hour of physical activity; and 0 sugary beverages to quench thirst.”
Start with “1” by getting active and enjoying the great outdoors for at least one hour every day. Sarasota County has over 160 free parks and preserves. Many include children’s playgrounds, sports fields, walking/hiking trails and preserves to enjoy. “Parks create a space not just for physical activity, but somewhere you can connect with nature and enhance
your emotional well-being,” said Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Director Carolyn Brown. Increased physical activity, especially outdoors, leads to various physical and mental health benefits. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), time spent outdoors helps maintain healthy weight and blood pressure and reduces stress and the risk for type 2 diabetes, heart attack, stroke and several forms of cancer. Everyone has a role to play to help stem the tide in the obesity epidemic without continuous broad community support. That means this generation of children is likely to have a shorter lifespan than their parents.
6 out of 10 children born today in Florida will be obese by the time they graduate high school. Do your part ... • Enjoy family time with a walk where you live. • Plan an outting away from home at one of the parks in our community. • Include healthy meals and snacks on your outdoor adventure. • Stay well-hydrated by having water on hand and use sunscreen and bug repellent, when mosquitoes are active. ! PARENT
conferences How to construct a successful meeting. By The Editors of Family Living Magazine
As that time of year rolls around once more, you wonder for the umpteenth time what you are supposed to say during a parent teacher conference. After all, you get quarterly grade reports. You trust the school to teach your child. Isn’t that enough?
Not really ...
Face to face communication can be more effective than a number or letter on a card. Body communication also can help you decipher a teacher’s impression of your child’s performance. A parent-teacher conference may initially be uncomfortable for both the parent and the teacher. However, a well-conducted conference will move beyond grades or problems that the student may be experiencing. There are several things that both parents and teachers can do that may help make conferences more successful. PLAN AHEAD Schedule a time that is convenient for both of you and have the conference in a location where you will not be distracted. Limit concerns; decide to discuss only two or three areas before you arrive. Clarify who will be present; let everyone know who will be at the conference and why (e.g.,
10
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
perhaps the principal, or special education teacher, or student should be involved). DURING THE CONFERENCE Be polite, personable, and positive. This will help everyone relax and adjust to the other’s communication style. No lecturing. Keep comments brief, this will give everyone present an opportunity to share information. Give examples. Provide specific examples of the child’s work or behavior. This helps everyone to understand the concern. Acknowledge what each person can do to support the child in the areas of concern, and develop common goals. Here are some sample questions you might like to ask. Remember it is important to discuss only two or three areas of concern. 1. Ask how your child is doing overall. This means that you want to know how your child’s performance as indicated by grades compared with the average student at the national level. Watch the teacher’s facial expression. Does she smile, wince, frown, or maintain neutrality in
Face to face communication can be more effective than a number or letter on a card.
6. Ask how you can help to support classroom learning. Perhaps you can volunteer to be a reading monitor or class mother. You can help your child do more reading, writing, or math exercises at home. AFTER THE CONFERENCE
describing your child’s assessment? Does he seem comfortable discussing your child’s performance, or is there a note of anxiety or sympathy in his voice? 2. Ask about your child’s personal performance. Is he or she working to potential? Could the student do better? What can you do to help push for improved performance? Should you engage a tutor? Does your child enjoy school or seem to be bored? 3. Ask about your child’s social behavior. Does he get along with others? Does he demonstrate courtesy and respect? Does she seem to have friends? Do others like her and choose her for team games? Which attributes seem to impress others? If none or few, what is lacking?
What can a parent do to enhance a child’s social acceptance? 4. Ask about your child’s emotional development. Does he or she respond appropriately to a variety of situations that stimulate anger, revenge, guilt, and embarrassment? Is there evidence of ethical standards when cheating temptations occur? Does your child exhibit a sense of personal values? How about social skills? 5. Ask about your child’s physical development. Do vision, speech, hearing, and motor coordination skills seem in line with others his or her age? Does the school provide testing of these and other health related concerns? When should your child see a doctor for an examination?
Following up with either a letter, oral communication or “thank you” is important for an on-going and supportive relationship. Schedule another conference if anyone present feels there is need for more discussion or evaluation of the common goals that were established. By being prepared for a parent teacher conference, you can make good use of the teacher’s time and maximize benefits to your child’s educational development. !

HOW TO CHOOSE
the right
SCHOOL The “Four Fit Factors.”
Deciding what your child needs and what matters most are key steps in choosing a school with the best fit for your child. Your child is like no other, yet possesses so many qualities in common with others. Children’s bodies, minds, emotions and spirits combine to make unique individuals. This mix, affects the kind of environment in which each child learns best. So which qualities in your unique child, really matter for choosing a school? Which of your child’s features will help her learn and feel better in some schools - with certain teachers, peers, materials, and expected ways of learning - and worse in others? By taking the jumble of characteristics that define your child and funneling them down into a manageable set, you will be able to identify which school is right for your child. 12
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
3. SOCIAL ISSUES The “Four Fit Factors” are simply a way of sorting out your child’s many features in a way useful for identifying your school needs. The Fit Factors for children include: 1. WHAT YOUR CHILD LEARNS These are aspects of your child that affect what subjects and at what level of difficulty your child should be taught at school. These include your child’s basic learning capability and interests. 2. HOW YOUR CHILD LEARNS These are aspects of your child that affect how a school should teach and interact with your child both in and outside of the classroom. These include your child’s learning styles, motivation, physical and mental health challenges, behavior challenges, learning disabilities and disorders, and self-understanding.
This includes the need for social contact with particular friends from the child’s perspective. 4. PRACTICAL MATTERS This includes essential extracurricular activities that may be compelling choice factors for some children. Not every Fit Factor characteristic is important to matching every child to the right school. You’ll need to decide which ones are really important for your child. Most children will have only a small number of characteristics that are top priorities for selecting a school. Identify these, and you can focus on finding a truly Great Fit school for your child’s top needs. Add to this key questions about school academic quality, and you will be ready to pick a great school that fits. !

The elementary years are the backbone of a student’s educational foundation. The daily schedule consists of core subject areas and an intertwining of science, technology, engineering, art, and music (STEAM) to build a solid foundation for future learning. Lessons include incidental teaching in critical areas such as higher order thinking, complex vocabulary development, and problem-solving. Lessons are interactive and stimulate the senses-visual, auditory, kinesthetic-tactile. Their elementary curriculum is not focused on learning for memorization, but rather learning for application and mastery. At the heart of the elementary program is their dynamic language and literacy curriculum. Faculty is skillfully trained to lead lessons that target the five essential components of reading across all subjects. Daily lessons are built on the principles of the Orton-Gillingham approach, which is regarded as the gold standard in language training. Students quickly establish bonds with peers who share similar interests. Extracurricular activities, Student Government, weekly Character Counts topics, and specific time allotted for study lab provides a comprehensive, whole-student approach to academic and social success. Their high school program is thoughtfully designed to prepare students for post-secondary life. The upper school years emphasize leadership, self discovery, and the importance of responsibility. NEWGATE School Cultivate a lifelong love of learning.
N
ewGate serves as the Lab School of the Montessori Foundation. As such, their goal is to embody the principles of best practice in Montessori education that the Foundation teaches to Montessori school leaders around the world. As many of you know, the Montessori Foundation literately ‘wrote the book’ on how to integrate Montessori principles into all aspects of school life, from an authentic Montessori program and curriculum at each age level, to building a partnership-based community, student leadership, and family-friendly policies. Montessori classrooms tend to fascinate both children and their parents. There are interest centers filled with intriguing learning materials, fascinating mathematical models, maps, charts, fossils, historical artifacts, computers, scientific apparatus and perhaps a small natural-science display. Classrooms are carefully prepared to stimulate children’s independence and intellectual development. You will not find rows of desks, even at the Upper School level; instead, the room will be set up to facilitate discussions and stimulate collaborative learning.
Fully Accredited and International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program
At the Early Childhood and Elementary levels, students will typically be found scattered around the classrooms, working alone or with one or two others. They tend to become so involved in their work that visitors are immediately struck by the peaceful atmosphere. At the Upper School, many classes will involve seminar discussions, individual research, thoughtful writing, and field experience. Teachers focus on each student as an individual, not on a daily lesson plan for the entire class. The ultimate objective is to help students to learn how to learn things deeply and independently, holding on to the curiosity, creativity, and intelligence with which they were born. Teachers don’t simply present lessons; they are facilitators, mentors, coaches, and guides. l

Sarasota and Manatee County School districts are dedicated to meeting the educational needs of every child. Every school has high quality educational options for students. Students originally are assigned to the school in the attendance area in which their parents live, but the district also provides a number of opportunities for parents to select other options for their children. Several magnet schools and programs that focus on specific areas of interest are available to students who meet eligibility requirements. Application is made directly to the school for those programs. Likewise, parents choosing charter school enrollment for their student apply directly at the school.
