5 benefits of hands on learning By Sandi Schwartz
Kids today are spending an exorbitant amount of time glued to their electronics. Nearly all children age 8 and under live in a home with some type of mobile device and spend an average of 2.25 hours a day on screens. This media time only increases with age—tweens use an average of 6 hours, not including time spent using media for school and homework, and teens are up to an average of 9 hours daily. Being tied to phones, tablets, and computers takes away from hands-on learning time, which is unfortunate since these types of experiences provide so many critical benefits to children as they grow and develop. As media becomes the go-to teaching
Education_i1.20.indd 6

tool in classrooms, it is imperative that we find fun and creative ways for kids to experience more hands-on, interactive learning opportunities at home. First, let’s dive into five key benefits of hands-on educational experiences. ENHANCES LEARNING When children are primarily learning by reading, listening, and watching, they miss out on a key component of the educational experience that can only happen by doing. Kids of all ages thrive when they are provided with interactive, engaging, meaningful educational experiences. According to Brookings Institution, students who are engaged in hands-on learning are much more likely to remember what they were taught. Interestingly, when children are physically engaged in an activity, they process the information differently and learn more effectively. Simply reading about a concept in a textbook or watching a demonstration in class is just not the same as physically experiencing what you are learning about. A research study from University of Chicago measured this concept using brain scans and found that students who engaged in a hands-on approach to learning scientific concepts were more activated in the sensory and motor-related parts of their brain. This also led to better quiz scores. STIMULATES CURIOSITY When children are part of something so fascinating that it fills them with awe, like a science experiment or art project, they get excited about it and want to learn more. Hands-on experiences like these can spur curiosity in children, which is so critical to their growth and success.
Even though their constant questions may be exhausting for us at times, their curiosity is exactly what we want to see from them so they continue to crave and seek out new knowledge. “One of our most important jobs as parents is to nurture kids’ innate curiosity. Not only is curiosity linked to academic achievement, it is tied to happiness in the long-term as well,” says Sandy Polu, Ph.D., founder of plumsparkkids. com, a creative learning subscription box for kids. “The key is to encourage curiosity in a way that is relevant and appropriate for the child.” IMPROVES SOCIAL INTERACTION Part of the problem with all of this technology is that kids are losing the ability to communicate and interact with others in person. When they hide behind their devices instead of talking face-to-face with their friends and family, they miss out on a major chance for emotional connection. According to Psychology Today, this kind of communication interferes with actual conversation and undermines our ability to connect with others. As children are constantly exposed to these quick impersonal ways of expressing themselves, they miss out on learning how to accurately convey their thoughts and feelings. When we engage our children in fun hands-on activities, it opens a whole new world to them in which they need to ask questions, explain directions, and talk to others about the project. These projects also provide a special bonding time for parents and children or siblings to take on a challenge and work together. Whether it’s baking in the kitchen, working on a garden, or
conducting a science experiment, kids will learn so many important social skills from the experience. These types of projects are also a great opportunity to invite over some neighbors or friends for a playdate so that the kids can work on a creative project together instead of staring at screens. EXPANDS CREATIVITY It’s one thing to observe art in a museum or watch a building being constructed in a video, but it’s another thing for kids to actually create masterpieces with their own hands. These types of activities allow children to tap into their own creativity and explore as they go. It gives them a direct sensory experience, which offers a more in-depth way of learning about a subject. It also provides a chance to stretch their imagination as much as possible. BOOSTS CONFIDENCE When a child has the opportunity to directly work on a project like a science experiment from start to finish, they can feel a sense of accomplishment when they see the results. They then become empowered, which leads to more confidence when they face the next challenge. They also learn from their mistakes and failures, which only makes them more resilient in the future. If the experiment does not come out as planned, they will learn to ask why and make adjustments the next time they work on it. >> continue pg. 31 www.FloridaFamilyLiving.com

READING success It begins at home
By Christine Bradford, K-8 Principal at Sarasota Christian School
Effective readers are grown, not born... All parents hope their child develops into an enthusiastic reader with a love of literature. Studies show that from our earliest days, children are acquiring language skills and learning how to read. The more children know about language and literacy before they arrive at school, the better equipped they are to be successful readers. How can you help set your child up for reading success in school? The work begins at home. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends you start reading aloud to your child by at least 6 months of age, although many families start at birth. Below are six ways you can help your child develop early literacy and a lifelong love of reading. 8
TALK TO YOUR CHILD It may seem obvious, but oral language development precedes written language skills (The Joy and Power of Reading: A Summary of Expert Opinion, Dr. Lois Bridges). Talking to your children beginning at birth exposes them to language - and this is an important building block for early reading success. According to researchers Betty Hart and Todd Risley, there is a strong correlation between a child’s academic success and the number of words their parents spoke to them at age three (The Early Catastrophe: The 30 Million Word Gap by Age 3, Hart and Risley). Talk with your child about your day, share stories from work, and use interesting language. Name things that you see around you. These activities build vocabulary and an understanding of how language works - important early reading skills!
READ TO YOUR CHILD Reading to your child is likely the single most important thing you can do as a parent to encourage your child’s reading readiness. Read to your child from their earliest days. Make a nightly routine of reading together, make sure your child has age-appropriate books available, and regularly visit libraries. According to Dr. Bridges,“early, frequent exposure to print has benefits that last a lifetime” (The Joy and Power of Reading: A Summary of Expert Opinion). In addition, she notes that children who are read to daily thrive at home and at school. TALK WITH YOUR CHILD ABOUT THE BOOKS YOU READ As soon as they are ready, talk with your child about the books you are reading at home. Encourage discussion by asking about a picture in the book, pointing out an interesting detail, or asking your child what might happen next in a story. Bridges notes

that interactively reading aloud is an important early language experience for young children. While reading aloud offers great benefits to growing readers, reading and discussing text offers significantly more potent benefits. PLAY WITH LANGUAGE Singing songs, saying riddles, and making up rhyming pairs can be fun ways to help your child develop early language skills. The sing-song rhymes of books like those from Dr. Seuss build phonological awareness in young children. When children have frequent pleasant experiences with words and text, they build a love not just for reading, but for exploring, learning, and thinking deeply. TALK TO YOUR CHILD’S TEACHERS ABOUT BOOKS When it’s time to look for a school, be sure to find out if your child’s school is providing a linguistically rich learning environment filled with a large, varied selection of reading
materials. Do the children have regular opportunities to read, listen to good reading, talk about reading, and write about reading? Be sure to ask about the books they are reading at school so you can have discussions about them at home with your child. YOU READ, TOO! When you spend time reading whether it’s a novel, magazine, or business journal - you lead by example. Our children imitate what we do, so ensure that your child sees you reading, hears you talking about what you are reading, and sees you writing about what you are reading. Make a family trip to the local bookstore, choose books to order online, or visit the local library together. The time you have at home together allows you to invite your child to a lifetime of learning. The above suggestions can be integrated into the normal course of your days together. There is no need to plan or design classroom type work at home. Simply
build a linguistically rich environment filled with engaging books you enjoy together. With a foundation like this, your child is likely to thrive when he or she arrives at school. Don’t stop reading together when school begins; keep this up at home. Many children will allow family to read to them at bedtime even into their early teen years. ! HOMEWORK help 6 tips for making homework effective By Gregg Sledziewski, Executive Director, Brain Wave Center of Sarasota
If you ask any kid if they like homework, it’s pretty obvious that most would answer with a resounding – NO!
10
Although homework has been getting some negative attention since the turn of the century regarding its effectiveness; additional research has shown that the right type of assignment can enhance success in academics and on standardized tests. That all being said, there is still homework to be done. And most parents would agree that it is not that easy. But remember,
tell your child how important school is. The attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child acquires. GET INTO A ROUTINE Allow some time to play and unwind after school, exercise, listen to some music, maybe even meditate, and have a healthy snack.

ESTABLISH A SCHEDULE Set time each day for doing homework. Don‘t let your child leave homework until just before bedtime. Then get down to business. CHOOSE THE RIGHT LOCATION Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework. Avoid having your child do homework with the television on or in places with other distractions, such as people coming and going. Also, be close enough to help when needed, notice for frustration and fatigue and just be available for positive reinforcement. FIND & ORGANIZE SUPPLIES Make sure the materials your child needs, such as paper, pencils and a dictionary, are available. Ask your child if special materials will be needed for some projects and get them in advance. Sounds simple enough, but we often leave this important task until the last minute.

CONSULTATION
TRY & THEN REASSESS Don’t be discouraged when how you plan to set up homework doesn’t work at first. Move some items around, try a different spot, until a good compromise is found. This will be an ongoing and evolving process throughout your child’s life as a student. WHAT TO DO ABOUT THE INTERNET? If your school is like ours, much of the assignments include online access to resources: study guides, online assignments, practice tests, research etc. all found on the web. The temptation to morph into social media can be over-whelming. You could put an internet block on these sites. Or, have them earn screen time through good grades or even getting all homework done quickly (and accurately) well before bedtime. If there are continuing problems with homework, get help. Talk about it with your child’s teacher or counselor. Some kids have trouble seeing and may simply need glasses; others might need an evaluation for a learning problem or attention disorder. Altogether, be positive about their homework. ! JOYS OF learning Understanding the benefits of the Montessori method
By Tim Seldin, Headmaster of NewGate Montessori School
Sarasota has some of the most interesting schools in America, from New College of Florida, the Ringling College of Art and Design, to our public, private, and charter schools. 12
Did you know that Sarasota is also one of the nation’s centers for Montessori education? Sarasota has several distinctly different Montessori schools in our community. NewGate School serves as the Lab School of the Montessori Foundation and has the only Montessori high school in the area. It attracts families from across America
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
Education_i1.20.indd 12
1/23/20 12:32 PM
Sarasota is also home to the Montessori Foundation and International Montessori Council, which moved here from Washington, DC in 2002. The Foundation works with Montessori parents, educators, and schools worldwide. The International Montessori Council accredits Montessori schools, certifies Montessori teachers, and has more than a thousand members in more than 50 countries. In addition, there is Montessori Live, a Montessori teacher education program and Sarasota University, a new graduate school that uses Montessori principles to guide instruction. Montessori, known for preschool programs, the years when a child’s brain is most sensitive and open to stimulation, extends up through high school, with more than 25,000 schools in 115 countries.
and around the world. Other Montessori schools include Center Montessori in Bradenton (Toddlers-8th); Island Village Montessori Charter School (K-8th); Foundations Christian Montessori Academy (Toddlers-6th); and a number of emerging Montessori schools, such as Indigo Circle Montessori (PreK-3rd).
Montessori appeals to parents who never want their children to lose the joy of learning. They sense that education should be a partnership among students and teachers; a journey, not a race. Children do best when they feel safe, empowered, and heard. Montessori schools nurture students’ innate curiosity, creativity, intellect, and sense of engagement. Montessori students learn how to learn, have a deep global understanding, embrace an entrepreneurial spirit, hone executive function skills, and practice
21st-century leadership that leads to lifelong success. Parents who consider Montessori for older students have seen the light going out in their children’s eyes as they become bored or overwhelmed by the culture found in much larger conventional schools. They tend to be talented, mature college-bound young people, who think outside of the box and want to learn deeply not just about their academic subjects but also about who they are as human beings and who they might become as adults. Montessori students have an exceptionally high rate of college completion, without being stressed out. A graduate recently wrote: “I study electrical engineering at Georgia Tech. I spent 14 years in Montessori at NewGate and can confidently say that it works. It instilled a love of learning that will never go away.” To get a sense of it, you just need to talk to some Montessori students. For example, when asked “Is this your class?” a six-year-old told a visitor, “No, but I work here.” Another was asked if it is true that in Montessori, students can do what they want. She responded: “No. We have a plan. But we like what we do.” !
Tim Seldin is the President of the Montessori Foundation (www.montessori.org) and serves as the Headmaster of its Lab School, NewGate School here in Sarasota, Florida (www.newgate.edu). This is an excerpt from one of his books “How To Raise An Amazing Child”

NEWGATE School Cultivate a lifelong love of learning. learning.
N
ewGate serves as the Lab School of the Montessori Foundation. As such, their goal is to embody the principles of best practice in Montessori education that the Foundation teaches to Montessori school leaders around the world.
As many of you know, the Montessori Foundation literately ‘wrote the book’ on how to integrate Montessori principles into all aspects of school life, from an authentic Montessori program and curriculum at each age level, to building a partnership-based community, student leadership, and family-friendly policies. Montessori classrooms tend to fascinate both children and their parents. There are interest centers filled with intriguing learning materials, fascinating mathematical models, maps, charts, fossils, historical artifacts, computers, scientific apparatus and perhaps a small natural-science display. Classrooms are carefully prepared to stimulate children’s independence and intellectual development. You will not find rows of desks, even at the Upper School level; instead, the room will be set up to facilitate discussions and stimulate collaborative learning.
Fully Accredited and International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program
At the Early Childhood and Elementary levels, students will typically be found scattered around the classrooms, working alone or with one or two others. They tend to become so involved in their work that visitors are immediately struck by the peaceful atmosphere. At the Upper School, many classes will involve seminar discussions, individual research, thoughtful writing, and field experience. Teachers focus on each student as an individual, not on a daily lesson plan for the entire class. The ultimate objective is to help students to learn how to learn things deeply and independently, holding on to the curiosity, creativity, and intelligence with which they were born. Teachers don’t simply present lessons; they are facilitators, mentors, coaches, and guides. l

MARVEL KIDS Florida 12 Countries • 180+ Schools • 28,000+ Students
M
arvel Kids Florida offers a special tutoring program aimed at the healthy development of children’s brains. The goal of the program is for children to maximally awaken their mental capacities, increasing their intellect and emotional intelligence. Mental development is achieved in a fun and playful way, based on three key things: calculating on the abacus, mental arithmetic, and didactic games. Mental Arithmetic is based on the use of the ancient calculating device called abacus (Japanese: Soroban).
Abacus mathematics develops a number of skills and abilities, such as: + QUICK CALCULATING + IMPROVED MEMORY + ENHANCED ANALYTICAL THINKING + GREAT CONCENTRATION
The Marvel Kids by Hikari program is intended for children ages 4-12, because it is the lifetime in which the human brain develops most dynamically and during which the largest number of neuronal connections will occur (synapses). After this period, the opportunities for development are significantly less, and it is extremely important not to let this unique opportunity in the life of the child go away. After mastering abacus work and harnessing the powers of both brain hemispheres, children unleash ther hidden potential. They are able to quickly and accurately calculate tasks like 7262 x 6/43 or 8473 + 3637 - 7372 ... without any tools, and with the correct answer in just a few seconds! This ability will stay with them trough their adult life. 20

oes your child require tutoring year after year? We can help! We are one of 550 providers of a nationally researched pair of programs called PACE and Master the Code. The goal of these programs is to build brain based learning skills. If skills weakness is a cause of your child’s learning struggle, tutoring alone cannot correct it. After completing PACE and Master the Code, a student has a permanently improved ability to perform independently, at school or work. • Increases reading levels up to 4 years in only 60 hours! • Science based program improves cognitive skills for students ages six to adult.

HAVING a baby?
Tips for a healthy pregnancy By Maribel Santos-Cordero, DMD, Dentistry for Children & Adolescents
Taking care of yourself takes care of your baby. Pregnancy is the most wonderful gift and a life-changing adventure! It comes with a mix of joy, new challenges, plenty of changes, a few sacrifices and a whole world of possibilities. The choices that you make while you are pregnant will have an impact in the development of your baby. This is particularly true when it comes to oral health. If you want to set your baby off to a healthy start, you will need to be mindful of how your nutrition and oral health can affect your baby even before birth. Being pregnant can be exhausting! Daily oral care routine may be skipped or forgotten when you are feeling nauseous and tired. This can lead to plaque and bacteria build-up in your mouth. When plaque sits around for a while, your gums may bleed and get inflamed. The changing hormonal levels that occur with pregnancy can exaggerate some dental problems like gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and periodontal disease (bone loss).
Education_i1.20.indd 28
1/23/20 12:33 PM
When you eat for two, you should brush for two. Pregnancy cravings and frequent snacking may increase the amount of food acids that come in contact with your teeth. Bacteria like Strept Mutans, already present in your mouth, will in turn produce more acids. This may weaken your enamel and make your teeth more prone to dental cavities. An excess of bacteria in your mouth can travel from your gums into the bloodstream and eventually reach the fetus. Dental bacteria stimulate the production of prostaglandins – a chemical known to induce labor. Several studies have linked gingivitis and dental bacteria to pre-term delivery and low birthweight babies. To avoid gingivitis and dental decay, brush at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and floss once a day. If you need dental treatment during pregnancy, it is best to get it during your second trimester. Your morning sickness may have subsided and it will still be easy for you to recline in the dental chair. Your dentist will try to avoid X-rays but, if necessary, they will be careful to protect you and your baby. Morning sickness is real for a lot of pregnant women. Frequent reflux and vomiting can weaken tooth enamel as the stomach acids find their way into your mouth. Rinse with a teaspoon of baking soda mixed with water to neutralize these acids. Baby teeth start developing six weeks after conception. Nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D and proteins are essential for prenatal tooth development. If you don’t receive these nutrients through your diet, your baby won’t get them either. Having nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy may cause premature birth and low birth weight. Some enamel defects are common with low birthweight or illness in the newborn
Education_i1.20.indd 29
infant. When you snack, choose foods that are low in sugar and full of nutrients like vegetables and fruits. If you feel like your diet is not adequate, seek professional advice on what supplements to take. Continue the good habits once your baby is born. Parents can pass the cavity-producing bacteria to their babies once the first tooth comes in. Avoid sharing foods or kissing your baby on the lips. A baby that goes to bed with a bottle or is allowed to constantly suck on a sippy cup with juice or milk will be exposed to frequent acid attacks from bacteria in the plaque. It is not uncommon to see babies and toddlers with dental decay. Focus on preventive care. Wipe your baby’s gums after each feeding and start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears. Start flossing when you see no space in-between your baby’s teeth. Yes, you read this right; it is never too early to floss! Children should begin routine dental care with a pediatric dentist by age one so that problems can be detected or avoided completely. Taking care of yourself takes care of your baby. By making the right choices, you will increase the chances of enjoying many years of healthy happy smiles. ! Dr. Maribel Santos-Cordero is a board-certified & laser-certified pediatric dentist in Lakewood Ranch dedicated to the oral health of children, adolescents and children with special needs. She believes in helping children achieve their full potential by providing all the necessary tools to guide their growth and development. Preparing a meal involves choosing a recipe, following directions, tracking time, measuring, and even working on simple math equations. Kids also have the chance to touch and feel the different ingredients. Although there are apps for baking cookies and making ice cream sundaes, nothing beats whipping up a delicious treat with your own hands! !
