The Marvel Kids by Hikari program is intended FOR CHILDREN AGED 4 TO 12, because it is the lifetime in which the human brain develops most dynamically and during which the largest number of neuronal connections will occur (synapses). After this period, the opportunities for development are significantly less, and it is extremely important not to let this unique opportunity in the life of the child go away. SIX STEPS
to success
Get kids to love chores? No Way! By Kathryn Kvols, Author
“Jonathan, its time to do your chores!” Mom has reminded him for the third time this morning, “Okay. Okay. I’ll do them at the next commercial, I promise.” says Jonathan trying to buy time. “Jonathan, you’ll do it right now or you won’t be going to soccer practice this afternoon!” threatens mom. Are you tired of yelling, bribing and threatening your kids to get them to do their chores? Many parents are just concerned about getting the job done. It is important that we shift our intent to one of wanting to shape our child’s character. When we make this shift we then can be inspirational to our children instead of nags and drill sergeants. Here is how...
6
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
STRESS INTERNAL REWARDS When you do a chore share with your child how it makes you feel to get it done. For example, “My room was getting so cluttered that I was starting to feel not good about myself.”
make your child dependent on the authority figure who dispenses rewards and punishments. External rewards create self-centered children who only do good works if there is something in it for him.
After he has heard you make several statements like this, start asking him questions that internally motivate him like, “How do you feel about your clean room?” Ask him questions that help him to look inside for the good feelings he has when he has done a job well. Versus saying “You are a good boy” which is external motivation.
EMPHASIZE THE JOY OF DOING Again you want to model first and then relate it back to them so you might say, “I love how I feel after I have put my all into a project. I feel like I have really accomplished something.” Other words you could use are, “I feel like I really contributed or stretched myself or stuck through something that was not pleasant.”
Internal rewards have longer lasting effects than external rewards because he can draw on the good feelings he creates by doing “good works” for the rest of his life. External rewards on the other hand are shallow, fleeting and
POINT OUT HOW GOOD IT FEELS TO GIVE 100 % Sometimes children do just enough to get by or do a sloppy job. When this happens, don’t do the job over for them
or criticize their work, or give up on having them do chores. Instead, ask in a light tone of voice. “Did you give this project 100%?” If they say yes, challenge them to do one thing better in a light tone. TEACH THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING HELPFUL Look for opportunities to be helpful in their daily life. For example, if you see an elderly lady struggling with her groceries ask, “How could you be helpful?” When they have been helpful, make sure to ask them how they feel rather than simply praise them. Again, it is helpful to model the behavior several times before you expect them to demonstrate the concept. Be sure to tell your child how valuable their work is to the whole family. For example, “Thank you for cleaning the family room. It is so much nicer to play games is neat a room.” Don’t talk about having to do chores. Talk about having opportunities to contribute or “Household Operations!” ACCENTUATE TEAMWORK A lot more can get done in a short time if everyone works together. Play a game where you set the timer on for 15 minutes, put on loud music that makes you want to dance and see how much you can get done as a family in 15 minutes. You may need to do this at several intervals a day in order to get everything done. Short segments where you make work fun makes children feel more cooperative. TEACH SELF-RELIANCE When we give children chores to do, we teach them to become dependent on an authority figure. Instead, frequently ask, “What needs to be done?” Then follow their lead. This also helps them develop a sense of ownership in the care of the home. Children often become compliant or defiant when there is an authority figure. We want them to become self-reliant. Another way children can feel self-reliant is to make their own list of what chores they need to do with a checklist for the week. (Younger children may need your help and draw pictures of their chores.) The chart then becomes their guide instead of you having to be the authority figure. Children have a natural desire to want to help as long as they are not coerced. Make work fun by making a game of it, working together, and by accentuating internal rewards. For more help on chores and other parenting issue, take a parenting course in your area! ! KINDERGARTEN
ready?
Why a good preschool is so important. By Tanna Horner, Head of Lower School at The Out-of-Door Academy
It takes so much more for a child to be ready for kindergarten than just writing his/ her name, recognizing letters, and reciting numbers. There are many critical facets of development that a preschool experience promotes. Quality early childhood centers, especially those with degreed teachers trained in early childhood education, can help your precious little one become more well-rounded and transition seamlessly into the routines and expectations of elementary school. Your child continues to develop in a multitude of ways— emotionally, socially, physically, in language and literacy, and in cognitive skills. Look for preschool programs that support him/her in all of these areas. EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT Preschools lay an important foundation in helping children to not only understand their feelings but also to recognize and respond to the emotions of others. The preschool/prekindergarten program offers a plethora of opportunities for students to learn and practice self-regulation (learning to manage strong emotions and reduce personal stress to help others), collaboration, and empathy through literature, role play, and real, meaningful, and emotionally charged face-to-face connections. SOCIAL MATURATION Working with others is not often a skill that comes naturally. It takes guidance to develop collaborative skills. Making mistakes in a controlled 16
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
environment helps children develop resilience. With the assistance of master teachers, children are mentored through purposeful opportunities and discover answers to questions such as: - “How do I lead and when should I follow?” - “How do I show respect when others are speaking?” - “How can I disagree with dignity?” - “How can I wait my turn when I really want to be first?” The playground and early childhood classroom are the perfect places to gain this knowledge and perspective prior to entering school. Children do not need instructions to learn how to play. They will learn the “rules” from classmates. This is where boundaries are tested and understood, give and take is negotiated, and creativity and innovation are born. PHYSICAL ADVANCEMENT You may not think that activities such as threading pasta, pinching clothespins, or cutting and glueing craft projects are that important in the scheme of a child’s development, but they are crucial to later expectations of holding a pencil, feeding oneself, buttoning, and zippering. These muscle-building, staminaincreasing exercises strengthen fine motor skills and prepare students for an elementary school world where writing is a large piece of the curriculum pie and self-help skills of putting on a jacket, opening lunch
containers, and independent hygiene and toileting are expectations. LANGUAGE & LITERACY PROGRESS At its heart, literacy is about communication, which is why children learn literacy skills long before learning to read. Early childhood programs promote general oral vocabulary development and specific oral vocabulary related to school subjects, build upon auditory processing skills, bolster the recognition of the individual sounds, or phonemes, in words (phonemic awareness), and bring awareness of other aspects of the sound of language, such as syllables, rhymes, and sentence sound patterns. IMPROVED THINKING (COGNITIVE) SKILLS Teachers are adept at modeling how to think, not what to think by asking open-ended questions, providing opportunities to categorize and classify, analyzing patterns, and encouraging curiosity. Throughout their time in preschool, children will also be exposed to the thought processes of their peers, allowing them to begin to understand how others think and that there are multiple ways of approaching problems - not just one correct way. The greatest amount of brain growth occurs between birth and age five. In fact, by age 3, roughly 85% of the brain’s core structure is formed.
In contrast, the majority of our investments are made in the traditional education years of K-12, which begin at age five. [“Lifetime Effects: The High/Scope Perry Preschool Study Through age 40.” Ypsilanti, MI: High/ Scope Educational Research Foundation, 2005.] Preschool is the perfect opportunity to capitalize on this rapidly developing process and provide rich and robust experiences that will lead to later school success. ! Tanna Horner has served as Head of Lower School at ODA since 2014. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Gifted Education and a Master’s in Educational Leadership. She is an avid reader and currently enrolled in two certification programs, Critical Thinking through USF, and School Management and Leadership through Harvard.

OH NO! is my child ADHD? From testing to treatment. By Gregg Sledziewski, Executive Director of The Brain Wave Center
Attention-deficit disorders (ADD/ ADHD) are one of the most commonly diagnosed conditions in America today. It’s not hard to see why, as the symptoms associated with the diagnosis (easily distracted, impulsive, lack of attention or focus, can’t sit still, anger issues) are very common in many other conditions. In fact, ADD/ ADHD is highly comorbid with other conditions and with a host of academic achievement difficulties. Generally speaking, children struggle at times to pay attention, sit still, follow directions or listen. The struggles happen more often and can be more difficult with kids with attention deficits. By and large, there are three categories for signs of ADHD and they can present symptoms from one, two or all three groups.
22
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
Inattentive- Having trouble focusing concentrating or staying on task. Very easily distracted.
is also encouraged to rule out medical problems that can mimic ADD/ADHD symptoms, such as thyroid issues.
Hyperactive- Easily bored, rush through tasks making mistakes, fidgety and restless. Without realizing they may disrupt others.
Once a diagnosis is confirmed, the next step is to assist families to develop an intervention program. Interventions are in two categories, drug and nondrug. Whether or not medication is used, research indicates that some combination of medical and nonmedical interventions represent the best-practice approach to managing ADD/ADHD. Medication can reduce symptoms severity, while non-medical interventions teach new skills and new ways of managing life’s challenges.
Impulsive- Acting before thinking and without asking permission, finding it hard to wait. Emotions may be too intense for the situation. In reality, defining ADHD is not that simple. It’s normal for little kids to be distractible, restless, impatient, or impulsive but, it does not always mean that a child has ADD/ADHD. Generally, attention deficits cannot be diagnosed with a physical exam or a lab test, such as blood test or simple scan, or observation alone. Instead, health professionals use an evaluation process to diagnose the probability of an attention deficit disorder. Typically, testing platforms combine standard tests and rating scales to detect the presence of ADHD. Programs may include a Clinical Review, Parent Questionnaire, Parent and Teacher Rating Scales, and Psychometric Test Data. Advanced programs include Electro Physiologic Measures (EEG, qEEG or Brain Map) to validate the findings and to identify other potential problems. A physical exam
Non-medicine treatments can include behavioral therapy, parent coaching and school support. Attention deficits can improve when children eat healthy food, get enough sleep and exercise. Studies have shown that neurofeedback can also be an effective non-drug, non-intrusive modality. When choosing a health care professional be sure to ask about their assessment procedures to be sure that they engage in a comprehensive ADHD evaluation process. ! At the Brain Wave Center our interventions include Brain Mapping, Neurofeedback, Psychotherapy, Nutrition Counseling, Lymphatic Drainage, Craniosacral Therapy and more. PACI v.s. thumb? The side effects?
by Dr. Maribel Santos-Cordero, Dentistry for Children & Adolescents
Sucking is a natural and necessary reflex for a baby. Some infants start sucking their thumbs in the womb. Babies need to be able to suck properly in order to be fed. They may also suck on their fingers or a pacifier to find comfort when hungry, tired, bored, scared or wanting to fall asleep. We call this a non-nutritive sucking habit as it is independent of the feeding needs. This urge decreases after 6 months of age but many babies keep the habit until around one year of age. THUMB OR PACIFIER? Does it really matter if your child prefers the thumb over a pacifier? What if they choose none? 32
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
Both my boys chose the pacifier maybe because I was more determined to do it this way. As a pediatric dentist, my argument was that I could have better control of the habit if it was not permanently attached to my child. Choosing the pacifier also meant suffering through restless nights every time the pacifier got lost or not been able to clean it when it fell on the ground. After seeing so many of my patients struggle to quit prolonged sucking habits, I now believe that a child that wants to be a thumbsucker will find a way to be one. In the early days,
thumbsucking could be advantageous because your baby will have the ability to self-soothe. As your child grows older, not wanting to give up finger or pacifier habits could be a disadvantage to proper growth and development of the face. A LITTLE TOO MUCH‌ As with most habits, a little too much can be harmful. Prolonged or intense sucking habits may change the way your child speaks, eats and breathes. Constant pressure from the finger or a pacifier may reshape the mouth and alter proper growth causing children to suffer from one or more long-lasting negative side effects.
Dental Malocclusion - The most common and visible side effect of these habits is developing an improper bite. When a finger or a pacifier is placed between the tongue and the roof of the mouth, it does not allow the tongue to place the proper natural pressure needed against the palate to create an ideal bite. Children often develop anterior open bites, crossbites and misaligned teeth. An anterior open bite shows as a space in the front when your child is biting with the back teeth. Children that are very aggressive in their sucking may reshape the palate to be higher and narrower. As a result, the top teeth can’t bite over the lower teeth and the bite goes off to the side into a crossbite. When pressure is placed against the teeth, the upper front teeth can be flared out and the lower front teeth, pushed back. If you have already noticed these changes in your toddler, chances are that changes may revert the earlier you quit the habit. Older children may have to fix dental and jaw problems in the future with orthodontics and surgery. Feeding Issues - Some children are often labeled as slow, picky eaters when the problem is that chewing and swallowing with your mouth open, a weak tongue and separated teeth can be a daunting task. Speech Issues - When the bite is open or the teeth are flared, the tongue tends to stick out. Your child may develop a lisp or other speech impediments. Without dental care to correct this issue, even the best speech pathologist will find it hard to achieve proper speech sounds. Many children with speech impediments find it difficult to communicate and may become frustrated and isolated. Social Issues - While thumbsucking may be seemed as normal, older children are more likely to become a target of their peers and be selfconscious of their appearance.
IT’S A HARD HABIT TO BREAK! As your child gets older, the need to self soothe by sucking on fingers or pacifiers is no longer biologically necessary. Most children are motivated to quit but it may take a lot of love and support to overcome these habits. Start by finding out what stimulates the behavior before you develop a weaning strategy. Punishing and shaming may increase anxiety and an unconscious desire to suck more. A good dose of praise can go a long way. Finding other ways to self-soothe or keeping your child busy and entertained may be all you need. Toddlers may not like a pacifier that has been slowly cut shorter. If your child is old enough to understand the concept of exchanging something for a reward, CALL THE PACIFAIRY! The Pacifairy takes the pacifiers away and leaves a present behind. A Thumbsucking Chart- Reward System may help reinforce positive behavior and give your child an incentive to quit the habit. There are other methods like bitter taste nail polish, taping your child’s finger and a variety of dental appliances. Every child is different and there is no specific procedure that works for everyone. Identifying potential problems linked to these non-nutritive habits and asking for help early on is the key to helping your child thrive! ! Dr. Maribel Santos-Cordero is a boardcertified & laser-certified pediatric dentist in Lakewood Ranch dedicated to the oral health of children, adolescents and children with special needs. She believes in helping children achieve their full potential by providing all the necessary tools to guide their growth and development. You can visit www.sarasotachildrendentistry.com or call 941-907-7762 to learn more about her practice or if you suspect your child is suffering from negative side effects of a sucking habit. www.FloridaFamilyLiving.com
