IMAGINARY
friends
One of the most helpful friends a kid will ever have
Sometimes they’re human, other times they’re animals, like the life-size rabbit in the old Jimmy Stewart movie, “Harvey.” Sometimes the imaginary friend is an occasional visitor ...

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
... But other times it may be a child’s constant companion! Children may talk to their imaginary friends, draw with them, or even read books to them. And plenty of parents have had to set an extra place at the dinner table for the “friend.” So are children’s imaginary playmates causes for concern? In most cases, No. Imaginary friends are a pretty normal part of growing up. About two-thirds of children have played with imaginary companions by age 7, and one-third still have them at 7, according to a study that followed children’s pretend play partners from age 3 through early elementary school.
Parents who eavesdrop on pretend play can open a window into their child’s world. This play can give you insight into their fears, challenges and into your child’s feelings. Listening to your child bravely comfort an invisible friend who’s about to get a shot may be a clue that your child is more afraid than she’s letting on.
the friend. Saying that the friend is the one responsible for a nighttime accident is okay. Blaming the friend for a string of bank robberies isn’t.
• Imaginary friends can act as a child’s trusted confidant when there’s no one else to tell their secrets to. Even small children have issues that are too private to tell us.
• Don’t use the friend to manipulate your child. That means no comments like “Maggie finished her dinner, why don’t you finish yours?”
• Imaginary friends can help kids figure out the difference between right and wrong. Kids sometimes have a tough time stopping themselves from doing things they know are wrong. Blaming the imaginary friend for eating cookies before dinner is often
• Treat the friend with respect. This means remembering his name, greeting him when you meet, and apologizing when you sit on him.
Most kids lose their imaginary friends between their third and fifth birthdays. Sometimes the friends are forgotten, sometimes they’re sent on a distant and permanent trip, and other times they “die” in a horrible accident. Pretend friends are rarely a sign of
Parents who eavesdrop on pretend play can open a window into their child’s world. This can give you insight into their fears, challenges and into your child’s feelings... Imaginary companions have had a bad rap from psychologists for a long time. Jean Piaget, an influential Swiss psychologist whose theories on early childhood development took hold in the 1960s, believed that these friends reflect immature thinking and should vanish by the time a child starts school. But it is more widely felt now that they can be wonderful companions for pretend play, which is an important way to stimulate creativity and imagination. Having an invisible friend can make those long trips to the moon and back in time for dinner a little less lonely and they can help buck children up for tough times.
a sign that the child understands right vs. wrong distinctions but isn’t quite ready to assume complete responsibility for her actions. While it’s generally perfectly fine to humor your child and go along with her claims about the existence of an imaginary friend, there are a few ground rules: • Don’t let the “friend” be your child’s only companion. Kids need to socialize with others their own ages. If your child seems to have no other friends or has no interest in being with her peers, talk to your pediatrician. • Don’t let your child shift responsibility for everything bad to
emotional problems. If a child claims a friend is controlling her and making her do things she doesn’t want to do, parents should seek psychological help. But if a child isn’t depressed and has real-life friends too, pretend pals shouldn’t cause concern. In fact, parents should look for day care and preschool programs that allow time for imaginative play so children can interact with pretend figures. My pretend friends name was Mimi and my sister ’s friend was Kiki. I have to say I really miss them both. We used to have so much fun! Did you have a friend like mine too?

PARENT
conferences How to construct a successful meeting. By The Editors of Family Living Magazine
As that time of year rolls around once more, you wonder for the umpteenth time what you are supposed to say during a parent teacher conference. After all, you get quarterly grade reports. You trust the school to teach your child. Isn’t that enough?
Not really ...
Face to face communication can be more effective than a number or letter on a card. Body communication also can help you decipher a teacher’s impression of your child’s performance. A parent-teacher conference may initially be uncomfortable for both the parent and the teacher. However, a well-conducted conference will move beyond grades or problems that the student may be experiencing. There are several things that both parents and teachers can do that may help make conferences more successful. PLAN AHEAD Schedule a time that is convenient for both of you and have the conference in a location where you will not be distracted. Limit concerns; decide to discuss only two or three areas before you arrive. Clarify who will be present; let everyone know who will be at the conference and why (e.g.,
6

perhaps the principal, or special education teacher, or student should be involved). DURING THE CONFERENCE Be polite, personable, and positive. This will help everyone relax and adjust to the other’s communication style. No lecturing. Keep comments brief, this will give everyone present an opportunity to share information. Give examples. Provide specific examples of the child’s work or behavior. This helps everyone to understand the concern. Acknowledge what each person can do to support the child in the areas of concern, and develop common goals. Here are some sample questions you might like to ask. Remember it is important to discuss only two or three areas of concern. 1. Ask how your child is doing overall. This means that you want to know how your child’s performance as indicated by grades compared with the average student at the national level. Watch the teacher’s facial expression. Does she smile, wince, frown, or maintain neutrality in
Face to face communication can be more effective than a number or letter on a card.
6. Ask how you can help to support classroom learning. Perhaps you can volunteer to be a reading monitor or class mother. You can help your child do more reading, writing, or math exercises at home. AFTER THE CONFERENCE
describing your child’s assessment? Does he seem comfortable discussing your child’s performance, or is there a note of anxiety or sympathy in his voice? 2. Ask about your child’s personal performance. Is he or she working to potential? Could the student do better? What can you do to help push for improved performance? Should you engage a tutor? Does your child enjoy school or seem to be bored? 3. Ask about your child’s social behavior. Does he get along with others? Does he demonstrate courtesy and respect? Does she seem to have friends? Do others like her and choose her for team games? Which attributes seem to impress others? If none or few, what is lacking?
What can a parent do to enhance a child’s social acceptance? 4. Ask about your child’s emotional development. Does he or she respond appropriately to a variety of situations that stimulate anger, revenge, guilt, and embarrassment? Is there evidence of ethical standards when cheating temptations occur? Does your child exhibit a sense of personal values? How about social skills? 5. Ask about your child’s physical development. Do vision, speech, hearing, and motor coordination skills seem in line with others his or her age? Does the school provide testing of these and other health related concerns? When should your child see a doctor for an examination?
Following up with either a letter, oral communication or “thank you” is important for an on-going and supportive relationship. Schedule another conference if anyone present feels there is need for more discussion or evaluation of the common goals that were established. By being prepared for a parent teacher conference, you can make good use of the teacher’s time and maximize benefits to your child’s educational development. !

A
At Sarasota Christian School they believe education should be innovative, rigorous, and collaborative. With education, you can’t use a one size fits all approach. needs and parents’ desires by offering advanced academics and gifted programs beginning in elementary school, college credits, and learning support, plus a part-time program for homeschooled students. In addition to their Bible classes and chapels, their faculty incorporate Biblical teachings into all aspects of learning. They are grateful as a Christian school to be able to share and instill the Word of
God as students navigate the most influential years of their lives. Their international school partnership program increases students’ knowledge of world cultures, builds international relationships and provides students with service and mission experiences. BEST BETS for
AFTER SCHOOL Find the perfect fit In a city where creativity is king, there are an endless amount of after school activities to keep your children on their toes, in the water and scoring goals. In this special issue of Family Living Magazine we have compiled some of the
best after-school resources on Florida’s Suncoast that are sure to extend their school day in enriching and creative ways. How do you decide what’s the best after-school activity for your child? How do you find a good program?
How to Choose After you have an idea of the possibilities, talk with your child about what he’s interested in.
Give him some options that complement his interests — an artistic child might enjoy a ceramics class, while a boisterous one can work off energy dancing or playing a vigorous sport. But don’t overlook what might seem like unlikely matches. Shy children often enjoy expressing themselves on stage in a drama class; fidgeters can find a way to focus through martial arts. Once you’ve narrowed the options down, visit them while they are in session so you can get a real idea about the environment, the staff, and the program.
When you visit, look for: 1. At least one adult for every 12
children — in younger groups, the ratio should be closer to one to 10.
2. Whether there any “hidden”costs, such as for uniforms, costumes or other equipment. 3. Friendly, enthusiastic staff. Are
they certified or otherwise expert in their field? Ask for references and check them.
4. A space that is clean, safe and spacious enough for the activity. Is there enough equipment and other resources for everyone? 14
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
5. A calm environment. Does the
activity appear well organized and supervised?
6. Happy, enthusiastic kids!
Wondering how many days a week your 2nd grader should be practicing the guitar? Searching for good ideas for after-school programs for your 10 year old? Use the following guidelines to steer your decisions — but remember that you know your child’s maturity and temperament best.
Kindergarten Keep your kindergartner’s afterschool life simple and free — one or two after-school activities a week are more than enough. Wait until they have adjusted to the daily school routine. Then find an extracurricular that involves their creative and/or physical side, such as an art, dance or music program.
Grade 1 Balance your 1st grader’s schedule with play dates, playground visits and one or two days of an afterschool activity per week. Best bets are noncompetitive sports and other physical activities since this is around the age when your child is starting to get a grip on the abilities of their own body. Plus, after being in school all day they need an outlet to play and run.
Grade 2 Get your child involved in choosing extracurricular.s They’ll probably tell you what they’d like to do anyway! Steer them towards activities that they do not get to do at school, whether it’s sports like swimming or skating, computers or art and music lessons. Many kids start learning piano or violin around this age. Make sure your child has at least one or two days free a week for alone time, which they are starting to need to unwind.
Grade 3 After sitting all day in a classroom, your 3rd grader needs to move and socialize after school. Team sports are a great choice — now they are old enough to remember and follow rules and can handle losing (though they are still not ready for anything ultracompetitive). Other good choices are activities that use and develop fine motor skills, such as painting and drawing, sewing or learning to play an instrument.
Grade 4 Try to get your 4th grader involved in one or two extracurricular activities that they are good at and love doing. It will build confidence and help them manage stress, which is key at this age when cliques and social pressure in school are beginning to build. Another thing that’s growing is their pile of homework, so make sure they have adequate time to complete their work without having to stay up late. Set limits on seeing friends and activities if they are often crabby and irritable, if their grades drop, if they have trouble sleeping, complain of mysterious illnesses, or if they shows other signs of stress such as overeating.
everything and wants to spend all their time participating in activities and hanging out with friends. To ensure they are completing their schoolwork and not becoming burnt out, you should make sure they have two free afternoons a week. While you’re at it, block out a once-a-week family time that you and your child stick to so they remember that family is a priority.
Middle School Try to steer your middle schooler toward activities that reinforce learning and get them away from the TV. On average, middle schoolers spend an equal amount of time every week watching TV and socializing with friends — about 20-25 hours apiece. To improve academic performance, encourage your preteen to spend time volunteering, joining school clubs like band, chess or foreign language, or to sign up for extracurriculars with a leadership element, such as the school newspaper or student council. It will help them feel more connected to the school community while forging friendships based in common interests and experiences. As always, keep an eye out for signs that they are not overextending themselves with afterschool commitments. As a general rule, they should be spending fewer than 20 hours a week participating in their afterschool activities. !
Grade 5 Over-scheduling is a problem you and your child will probably face this year. Your 5th grader is full of energy for www.FloridaFamilyLiving.com

DREADED pink eye What it is and how to avoid it By Dr. Scott Silverman, MD, Coastal Eye Institute
20
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
Every mom knows and fears it. It stalks playgrounds, day care centers, and schools. It can be found in every household sometime during childhood:
What is it? It’s the dreaded Pink Eye. Pink eye is known as conjunctivitis in medical terminology. This inflammatory condition affects the conjunctiva (the thin membrane that covers the eye). It normally produces moisture to coat and lubricate the eye and has tiny blood vessels. When this membrane becomes irritated or inflamed the blood vessels enlarge, thus making the eye red. Causes of conjunctivitis vary but most commonly arise from: 1) Infection 2) Allergy 3) Environmental Irritants Infectious causes include bacteria and viruses which are common when children are together. The distinguishing mark of an infection is sticking together of the eyelids upon awakening in the morning and discharge of the eyes. BACTERIAL Infections usually cause a white or yellow thick discharge. Bacterial conjunctivitis requires treatment with antibiotic drops or ointment. In children, bacteria is the cause of conjunctivitis 80% of the time. VIRAL Infections produce red eyes, a sore throat and runny nose - symptoms found with the common cold. There is usually a watery discharge and can last from one to two weeks, or until the virus has run its course. Infectious conjunctivitis is highly contagious whether it’s viral or bacterial. Contact with common objects such as towels and clothing
must be avoided. Anything that a person touches can be contaminated. Because of this, frequent hand washing is especially important and can prevent the spread of the condition from one eye to the other or to family members. Most children need to be away from school for 4-7 days to avoid spreading the condition to classmates. Allergies can also produce conjunctivitis. Chronic redness and itching of the eyes are hallmarks for allergic conjunctivitis. Children will often compensate by rubbing or blinking their eyes. Allergic conjunctivitis is especially common in children with hay fever or asthma. Anti-allergy eye drops can give dramatic relief to children with this problem. Environmental irritants such as smoke or fumes may cause conjunctivitis. In these cases eradication of the offending irritant is the best remedy. UNCOMMON CAUSES Several diseases can produce red eyes and are of a more serious nature than conjunctivitis. Symptoms to watch for are pain, blurred vision and severe light sensitivity. A complete eye examination is necessary to determine the cause and the proper course of treatment. The key is prevention. Hand washing is quite effective and can prevent many cases - especially spreading the condition from one eye to the other. Careful supervision and quick action can help lessen the severity of a common childhood illness from infiltrating your family and home. ! WEISS PEDIATRIC CARE
Dr. Robert Weiss has been keeping Sarasota kids healthy for over 30 years. Five years ago, Dr. Weiss and his wife Diane, a child development, parenting and pediatric sleep specialist, combined their over fifty years of experience to create a oneof-a-kind pediatric practice. At Weiss Pediatric Care the goal is simple, but powerful: Create a warm, caring atmosphere that
24
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
attends to children of all ages and their family as a whole. This single-physician practice has a more intimate feel and the personal doctor-patient relationship we all long for. They believe that to grow healthy children from newborns to young adults, it takes much more than just checkups and sick visits. When you visit the office, not only does your child get exceptional
pediatric care, the family receives the developmental guidance, skills and support needed to meet the challenges of raising children. From breastfeeding to bedtime, behavior to special needs counseling, they are there for you. Dr. Weiss, Diane and the Weiss Pediatric Care team provide a very special kind of care for kids. Clearly their patients agree as they were named Readers Choice for Best Pediatrician.

BEACHES vacation A perfect stay for the entire family by Gail and Judy Miller, owner of GEM Travel Consultants
Planning a family vacation that meets all the wants and demands of a modern family can be a daunting experience. What are your plans for Spring Break and Summer 2018? When you have a wide range of children in your family, or allergies and medical conditions can make it even harder. First, as a parent you want to be able to rest and relax from your daily routines. A time to recharge. You want to know
28
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
that the family is in a safe environment and in good hands. You want to be able to enjoy a meal in an elegant setting with a glass of Robert Mondavi wine. Beaches allows you to (usually) try 5 to 6 different types of restaurants with no cost and no tipping! It is so wonderful to be served and pampered, and not have to hear “mommy, I don’t like that kind of food.” It’s also a time to explore your own needs. A time to lay on the beach with soft breezes blowing off the blue Caribbean sea! Parents can relax knowing that the
staff is well trained including special needs children or dietary needs. Should you want to send a special night with
your spouse and need late night sitters, it is available for a small charge from 9pm to 5 am by certified nannies. Knowing that the younger children are being well entertained with Sesame Street’s Big Bird and baking cookies with Cookie Monster, it will be easy for parents to relax. Beaches now has a new character, Julia, who is a sweet and curious four year old with autism. She wants all children to know that they are very special and belong. Older children and teens can sometimes feel out of place in an all-inclusive resort, but not at Beaches. There are special cruises, snorkeling trips and outdoor activities only for teens so they can make new friends (and spend some time away from their parents). There are SCUBA lessons for all age groups. Even if it is a rainy afternoon there is still plenty to do. Foosball, air hockey, indoor basketball, Xbox play lounge and a DJ Scratch Academy to keep everyone occupied. If you are looking to make your vacation a learning experience and to ”give back” to the community, consider taking part in “packing for a purpose” and “Reading Road Trip.” Packing for a purpose is about bringing needed school supplies to the islands, while Reading Road trip is an excursion in to the country side of the Island to visit the students at their school. The children of the Island love visiting with tourist and showing off the facilities. This is such a rewarding experience for the whole family that it will be the highlight of your entire experience for years to come! GEM Travel Consultants has been helping families plan their vacations for over 25 years! Gail and Judy Miller are skilled consultants and can help you find the right vacation for everyone involved. Contact them today for more information on how to book a stay at one of their trusted resorts: 941-951-0046 www.GEMTravel.com

BIRTHDAY party Engage kids in a fun and creative way
Kids are born puppeteers, and a great way to engage kids in a creative way.
THE INVITATION When kids get your invitation you want them to feel like they just can’t wait for the party. It can be a simple project that both you and the child can do together.
THE THEME The type of puppet party you have depends upon the age and gender of the child. Dinosaurs, space creatures and bugs are quite popular with boys, while girls love princesses, horses and puppies. Talk to them about what they would like to do.
THE ACTIVITY Start the party with craft time. Have all the supplies sorted out for the young
30
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
puppeteers. Elmer’s glue, google eyes, and feather are a must. Keep it simple for the younger kids, but have some supplies at the ready for any older kids that can take their creativity to the next level.
Then break them into small groups and give them a few minutes to come up with a play. Have each group perform for the audience. Promote a big round of applause at the end of each performance.
For simple Finger Puppets first cut out a pair of 1 5/8-by-3-inch felt rectangles to serve as the front and back of the animal. Join the front to the back by gluing together the side and top edges. Leave the bottom edges open for a finger opening. Once the glue dries, use scissors to round the top of the puppet’s head. Glue on googly eyes. Now it’s time to add distinguishing animal traits.
A simple stage can be erected with a tension rod in the doorway with a sheet hanging over it. If you want to go all out, get two tension rods. The top rod would hold a valance and two side curtains. The bottom rod would hold a curtain about 48” tall.
After their friends have been created, have the kids go around the circle and tell a story about their new friend.
THE PARTY FAVOR Each child will take home their newly crafted friend. You may even want to take and print a digital photo of the child with their puppet to take home as well.
