SETTING limits 6 ways to do it while showing love By Kathryn Kvols, Author

Our children are primed for love, respect, and justice. The thoughtful limits we set, and the listening we do afterwards, give them exactly what they need. But setting limits takes time, especially at first.

You may have to postpone some items on your to-do list while you work with your child. But the time you spend listening and setting limits will yield freedom from trouble in the future. Your child will become closer to you, freer of hurt, and more secure. Here are some examples of what you can offer:

the spoon, or we can put it in a smoothie so you can’t taste it. You’re in charge of this decision. What would you like to do?” • Partnership with you in solving problems: “I can see you two love this game! Can you help me for just a minute to solve a problem? Your baby sister is asleep and loud voices will wake her. What should we do?”

• Autonomy: “You have a choice. You can take the medicine from

4

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

Summer Camp_i2-19.indd 4

3/12/19 5:04 PM

• Mastery: “I love how you get your own water. Water is a resource we can to conserve to help save our planet. You can help by just turning the handle tightly on the faucet. Do you think you can show me how to do that?” • Contribution: “Your baby brother is so much happier in his car seat when you make faces at him. See how much he loves that? Thank you so much for helping him feel better!” • Playful connection with you: (putting a sock on your ear and speak in a funny voice), “Is this Ben’s foot? Where’s Ben’s foot? I’m his sock and I need his toes inside me, quickly!” • Fantasy fulfillment: “It sounds like you would love some ice cream, right this minute! What if we had a huge bowl of ice cream the size

of this car? What kinds of ice cream would you put in your huge car bowl?” These are all examples of meeting your child’s deeper needs for autonomy, play, contribution, and so on. Start by taking a deep breathe and take a moment, decide on a clear limit, add your understanding, and then sweeten the deal for your child by meeting their deeper needs. Have you ever set a limit only to cave in later? Why do we do this? Are we just bad parents. Of course not. • We’re too tired. • We’ve set the limit out of anger and made it too harsh. I once heard a mom threaten, “If you don’t get out of that pool right now, I will never take you swimming again!” • We want our children to like us. • We don’t like conflict.

• We feel clueless when it comes to setting limits. It is important to find out why we cave so we can change our pattern and get the results we want. For example, if you discover that you tend to cave at bedtime because you are too tired, try to take a 10 minute mediation break before bedtime or take turns with your spouse. ! DENTAL APPS for kids make their experience fun

By Maribel Santos-Cordero, DMD, Dentistry for Children & Adolescents

Getting your children excited about brushing their teeth can sometimes take a bit of creativity. Even if they enjoy tooth-brushing, there are some days when it may be a struggle to keep up with the routine. Did you know that your smartphone can help? Whether as a reward or a “bribery tool, there are some apps that may help you make your daily hygiene routine fun.

6

CHOMPER CHUMS Chomper Chums is a dental hygiene focused app designed to help parents teach children proper brushing techniques while keeping them entertained. Children earn rewards within the app for brushing, flossing and rinsing their teeth. They can use coins and Super Smile Award points to buy food and drinks for their virtual Chomper Chums pets. The app also encourages them to choose healthy food for their on-screen friends, so they learn about healthy eating choices in addition to building better oral hygiene. BRUSH DJ Brushing for two minutes, twice a day is an important part of your oral hygiene. Most children find it very difficult to keep track of time and, as a result, they may leave some plaque behind when brushing. Brush DJ is an app that will play 2 minutes of music from your music library. It has a visual display guiding you on where to brush and for how long. Brush DJ also lets you set reminders to change your toothbrush, floss and go to regular dental appointments. MONSTER MOUTHS, DDS Monster Mouth DDS is a colorful, fun and educational app that will help kids learn about the importance of tooth-brushing to avoid other oral problems. When the monsters are in pain, it is your job to bring them relief. Once you have properly brushed their teeth you can take an X-Ray, destroy cavities, and do other procedures to return the monster’s mouth to better health. You will have to race against the timer to avoid more “gunk” to build up on the teeth, which will require another round of brushing before you can proceed.

DENTIST OFFICE KIDS No dental school required to play with these dental tools! This app allows kids to be on the other side of the dentist’s chair. It helps them familiarize with tools and dental procedures. After selecting a patient, kids can choose from a few dental procedures and challenges to perform. They get graded on skills and time. Try this fun and non-scary app to introduce dental procedures to your children. BRACES HELP Braces Help is an app for people who are considering getting braces or are already under orthodontic treatment. This app has helpful tips, videos and pictures on how to care for braces. It also has information on what to do if your child is having trouble with braces. Use this app in conjunction with tips you receive during your regular orthodontic appointments and you will have all the help you need on your child’s smile-makeover journey. Helping children develop good oral hygiene habits can safeguard their smile for years to come. Start early. Brush twice a day. Floss once a day. Visit your pediatric dentist twice a year. Eat healthy. Stay motivated. Make it fun! ! Dr. Maribel Santo-Cordero is a board-certified pediatric dentist in Lakewood Ranch dedicated to the oral health of children, adolescents and children with special needs. She believes in helping children achieve their full potential by providing all the necessary tools to achieve optimal oral health. SUMMER brain drain some new ideas – with a twist

By Gregg Sledziewski, Executive Director, Brain Wave Center of Sarasota

Summer break is just around the corner. Many of you are selecting summer camps, vacations, and other healthy activities for your kids – to have some fun and recharge before school starts again. But what about the Summer Brain Drain! Short of academically based required summer reading, no-fun tutoring, education apps and other activities – is there anything specific for the brain? The answer is YES! Three area/activities that can directly help the brain during the summer are Eating, Exercise, and Brain Training. Below are some ideas with some interesting twists. SUMMER EATING It is well established that the brain accounts for up to 20 percent of the body’s total power requirements. Get your kids involved with the grocery shopping. Engaging your children with food shopping is a great way to encourage their sensory development and keep your brain super charged! 8

This seemingly simple activity familiarizes them with different foods. Here are some grocery store games to play with kids: • Have your child find a whole food item (fruit, vegetable, grain, meat, or nut) for every color of the rainbow. • Choose a letter of the alphabet and have your child pick out a whole food item that starts with that letter. • Assign your child a shape or texture and challenge them to find a food that matches it in the produce section. Afterwards, get your kids in the kitchen. There’s a task for every age, whether it’s sorting, rinsing, measuring, pouring, or cutting. Kids of all stages will benefit from having hands-on contact with foods. Picky eaters are more likely to expand their palettes once they’ve had the chance to see, smell, touch, and taste foods throughout the cooking process. Here’s one suggestion for the family to try: Zucchini Pizza Bites.

And speaking of food, how about planting a garden this summer? Kids who tend a garden will learn about soil, seeds and caring for seedlings, where food comes from, and more. You can plant a windowsill garden in your house or start one in your backyard. Bonus: gardening is good exercise! [Find recipes on FloridaFamilyLiving.com] EXERCISE, PLAY AND THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Movement, such as play, is one of the most important components of a healthy lifestyle. Movement is vital to your health. How does that relate specifically to your brain? The answer is circulation. Typically, we give more thought to weight management than to our circulation. But, if you’re interested in preventing disease and cleansing your body of toxins, pollutants, additives, and chemicals, your circulatory system is your partner; and it needs your help to stay strong.

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

Summer Camp_i2-19.indd 8

3/12/19 5:04 PM

The circulatory system consists of two distinct systems that work together: the cardiovascular system and the lymphatic system. We all get how play and exercise keeps the heart strong so it can push nutrient rich and oxygenated blood throughout the body and the brain. There is actually three times as much lymph fluid in your body as there is blood. When the lymphatic system is in balance it effectively flushes waste and toxins out of the body. It also carries immune cells throughout the body to help defend against infections. However, your lymphatic system is not as lucky as your blood circulatory system to have a powerful pump (the heart) to push it along. It relies on movement, such as play, regular exercise, gravity, and breathing. There are also new techniques such as electronic lymphatic drainage, hydrotherapy, and traditional massage therapy that can aid the lymphatic system. BRAIN TRAINING Neurofeedback or Brain Training can benefit everyone. It guides the brain to a more balanced emotional state and improves cognitive efficiency. Based on our own experience and recent studies, we now understand that Neurofeedback can help increase attention and working memory performance, reduce anxiety or depression, and help those with symptoms of ADHD, autism, and much more. Other applications could include personal development, peak performance at work, improved athletic control, or inner awareness. Now could be the time to benefit from this drug free, non-invasive, well researched training program. Neurofeedback is a way to quantify and train brain activity. How it works is quite simple. Brain cells interact creating thoughts, sensations, actions and emotions; detectable as brain waves. Neurofeedback specifically monitors brain waves, looks for irregularities, then produces a signal that is designed to correct and guide brain waves back into a healthy pattern. Overtime, the brain will learn to stay in healthy ranges on its own, through a process called operant conditioning. Neurofeedback programs are customized to you, to overcome a variety of issues and experience long lasting results. Neurofeedback focuses on building new neural pathways, strengthening the brain, rather than patching up symptoms. Neurofeedback can be effective on its own. However, continued research has shown that when it is combined with traditional therapies, exercise, proper nutrition and good sleep, the outcomes are typically superior. Neurofeedback is not a quick fix, but it is an effective, drug free and natural approach to help improve mood, concentration, and overall functioning. Vacations are important and built into the schedule to allow students and teachers some time to recharge. It’s true that research demonstrates that extended periods away from school can have a negative effect on academic retention and performance. Perhaps adding the simple activities described above can help improve brain function while having some fun at the same time. Enjoy your summer vacation! !

TIPS FOR

WATER SAFETY 1. Adult supervision is of paramount importance. Parents need to focus on their children 100% of the time. No distractions! 2. Practice “touch supervision” (a term used by the American Academy of Pediatrics). This means that at all times, the supervising adult is within an arm’s length of the child being watched, when near or in the water. 3. Remember, no child or adult is “drown proof.” 4. Keep in mind that children can drown in many different water sources including: bathtubs, toilets, buckets, baby pools, backyard swimming pools, community pools, streams, creeks, lakes, rivers, oceans and other places.

SUN PROTECTION 5. Avoid sun exposure during peak sun hours (10 AM – 6 PM). 6. Wear protective clothing and a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses (with 99-100% UV protection). 7. Sunscreen is a must (on sunny and cloudy days)! Look for products with UVA and UVB protection and an SPF of at least. 8. Sunscreen should be applied liberally 30 minutes before going out in the sun, and reapplied every two hours or sooner if swimming, sweating or toweling off. 9. Look for shade whenever possible.

DEHYDRATION AND HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES

10. Keeping well hydrated is very important. 11. Children (and adults) must remember to drink. 12. Do not wait until a child says he is thirsty before offering fluids. At this point, he is already dehydrated, so be sure to provide plenty of fluids befo e going outside, while out in the heat and afterwards. 13. Playing in the hot summer sun means lots of fluid losses, so avoid st enuous activity during peak sun hours (10 am- 6 pm). Look for shade and take lots of breaks. 14. Seek medical attention immediately for any signs of heat-related illness. 10

SUMMER camps the benefits of sending kids to a day camp by the By Sarah Lyons

Many parents want their kids to experience summer camps ... But the idea of spending several nights away from home is a little scary for both the parent and child. A great alternative, especially for younger kids, is to send them to day camp. Day camp, as the name implies, typically consist of a series of consecutive days where they child is away during the daytime hours. . Children leave in the morning to have the camp experience and come home in the afternoon or evening to have dinner with their families and sleep in their own beds. Day camp gives kids many of the same learning experiences as a typical sleepover camp.

BUILDS INDEPENDENCE Camp is a great place for kids to explore their own independence and day camp is no different. Kids are dropped off at camp in the morning where they are challenged with new 12

activities that they may not get the opportunity to try at home. They will make friends, eat lunch, and follow directions without the help of their parents. Kids start to feel more self confident and independent as the week goes on.

LEARN NEW SKILLS Day camps typically offer opportunities to learn and grow in areas that children may not be exposed to at school. Kids can pick camps that tailor to their interest including a variety of sports, music, dance, theater, science, art, exploring nature, and more. If your child is drawn to a particular activity or subject, chances are there is a camp that would interest them. Kids who are not particularly drawn to academics will

while learning new skills is a priceless benefit to pa ents. Who knows? When the kids come home from camp, they may realize they don’t need as much screen time as they thought they did.

thrive in day camps because they are rewarded for their talents and interests.

MAKE NEW FRIENDS While you may sign your child up for a camp with a friend, they will meet many new people their age. Children gain confidence as they learn to talk to and work with people that they have never played with previously. The opportunity to make friends with children that share similar interests and a fun new experience helps kids feel more comfortable when they are in new situations.

TAKE A BREAK FROM THE SCREEN When children spend time at day camp, they get a much needed break from screen time. As video games, apps, TV, and tablets take more and more of our free time, getting the kids outside to play or having fun

Summer Camp_i2-19.indd 13

LIFELONG SKILLS Day camp helps kids learn skills they can use for a lifetime including problem solving and leadership skills, improved confidence, and an openness to new things. Depending on the camp, they may learn other skills that will stick with them. My kids learned how to start a fi e and cook their own meal at local scouting camps. My daughter gained the confidence to get on stage in f ont of a room full of parents and peers at theater camp. My kids improved their skills at sport camps and they faced their fears while trying the camp obstacle course. These experiences will stay with your child throughout their life as they are faced with challenges and successes in the future. As you are deciding if day camp is right for your family, consider what type of camp your child would be most interested in. Choose something that you know they will be successful at and consider inviting a friend to sign up with your child. This can make them more comfortable that first day. Let your child help you choose the right camp and then let them know you think they will do great. ! www.FloridaFamilyLiving.com

SUMMER CAMP

SARASOTA

NATHAN Benderson Park Your water adventure awaits!

W

ave hello to a great summer at Nathan Benderson Park! Every day, our campers take to the water to learn, to have fun, to make friends and to make memories to last a lifetime!

We offer a Water Adventure Camp and a Freshwater Fishing Camp, but Drone Racing Camp and Robotics Camp — in partnership with Funducation — are new offerings this year. In our Water Adventure Camp, kids participate in kayaking, rowing, dragonboat paddling, sailing, canoeing and more! They’ll learn the basics of each discipline, and how to do them safely. Our goal is to educate the next generation of Florida boaters. In our Freshwater Fishing Camp, kids learn the essentials of safe fishing. They’l enjoy fishing on our 400-acre lake and nature preserve, and lea n rod and reel assembly, types of tackle and knots, casting, fishing and boati g safety. UNICORN b-day tips to throwing a magical party by Pam Molnar

Looking for a party idea where the kids can get their bling on, horse around with their friends and have a magical time? If your child loves unicorns, we have a party plan that will knock their horseshoes off. WHAT TO SERVE Rainbow Grilled Cheese - Use white cheese like Swiss or mozzarella or combo of the two. Divide into four or five zippe ed bags and add 3-5 drops of food coloring. Seal and shake to spread color. Place cheese in rows of color or mixed up for a swirly look. Cook grilled cheese as normal. Unicorn Nachos - Use bags of Bugle corn chips and add cheese, ground beef, tomatoes, avocados or whichever nacho toppings you like best. 32

Rainbow Drinks - Add candy sprinkles to ice cube tray and fill will ater. When frozen, serve with light colored drinks like Sprite, lemonade or white grape juice. Unicorn Ice Cream Cones - Add vanilla frosting to the outside of ice cream cones and roll in sprinkles. Fill with your favorite ice cream or fruit fl vored yogurt for a cool, sweet treat. GET CRAFTY Unicorn Horse Shoes You will find unfinish horseshoes on Oriental trading 12 for $5.19 or Amazon 48 for $12. Decorate with paint, hot glue, glue dots and the bling of your choice. Put wall hangers on the open end of the shoe so when you hang it, the luck doesn’t run out. Unicorn Garden - Purchase a terra cotta saucer, fill with coffee grounds, fish tan rocks or sand. Add moss for grass, a mini

wooden bird house and mini unicorn. Decorate with colored stones or jewels. You can also paint the bird house or saucer to give it personal touch. Unicorn Hat - Choose a gold or silver party hat from the party store. Decorate with long ribbons, fabric, jewels, foam or felt. Add your unique Unicorn Name to the hat with a name generator like NameGeneratorFun.com. PLAY SOME GAMES Find the Unicorn - Similar to an Easter egg hunt, hide plastic unicorns around the party area. Place numbers on each unicorn to match with a prize. Unicorn Rubber Duck Water Race - You can find unicorn themed rubber duck at the party store. Move them down the race course by either squirting with water gun, or blowing on them. Put numbers or names on them to see who winner is.

TRUTHS about drowning

Weak or No Supervision

Children drown quickly and silently—in a matter of seconds. Adults who were present when a child drowns were often distracted in some way, by talking on the phone, chatting with other adults around the pool, or reading. What you can do about it >> • Actively supervise your children around water, and have a phone nearby to call for help in an emergency. • When there are several adults present when children are swimming, use a card to designate an adult as the Water Watcher to prevent gaps in supervision.

No Barriers Curious children, especially those younger than 4 years old, can easily find and fall in to bodies of ater like pools, tubs and buckets. Often they are discovered too late to save. What you can do about it >>

• Never leave a child alone when in or near a body of water—even if it’s less than a few inches. • For pool owners, make sure your pool has four-sided fencing and a self-closing, self-latching gate. • Hot tubs should be covered and locked when not in use.

Weak or No CPR Skills Drowning victims who are rescued from the water need CPR immediately—before the paramedics arrive. It can prevent brain damage and be the difference between life and death. What you can do about it >> • Get certified! There are plenty of CPR classes available to meet busy schedules. Contact our local Red Cross at (941) 379-9300 and sign up for a class.

Weak or No Swimming Ability Children from non-swimming households are eight times more likely to be at-risk of drowning. Minority children have especially low rates of swimming ability and high rates of drowning.

What you can do about it >> • Enroll your child in swimming lessons. • If you do not know how to swim either, enroll in a parent-child class or an adult swim class. • To find swimming lessons contact tour local Red Cross, parks and recreation department, or even the YMCA.

Lack of Life Jackets Nearly 5,000 boating accidents occur each year in open waters (lakes, rivers and oceans) and more than 700 people drown. Of those who drown, nine out of 10 are not wearing a life jacket. Also, alcohol use is involved in up to one in fiv reported boating fatalities. What you can do about it >> • Have your child wear a life jacket every time you go boating or are on a dock. • Avoid or moderate your alcohol consumption when boating. • If you and your family boat frequently, consider taking a boating safety class through the U.S. Coast Guard.
