10 Steps to a Loving, Nurturing Relationship By Kathryn Kvols, Author It is important that you and your spouse are close. This not only provides a good model for your children but your relationship is also the glue that holds the family together. If this glue is watered down, the whole system gets weak. Research is saying, when there is a loving atmosphere, there is less illness. Stress in the family tears down our immune systems and causes our children to get sick and act out. Take a moment to reflect on this thought. Remember the last time there was a lot of stress in your family. Didn’t you whole family act out more? Now take a moment to remember the last time you felt passionate about your spouse. Recall how you felt. Life felt more vibrant, there seemed to be an element of magic in the air and things that normally bothered you were more easily dismissed.

4

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

Make being close is of utmost importance. Frequently, we don’t make being close to our spouse a priority and we end up feeling like roommates in a lonely house. When your intention is on being close, you will find numerous ways to create the closeness you desire. Here are some tips. Many of these will not be new to you. Please do not dismiss them. Let them serve as a reminder. The power of two makes life much easier. COMMUNICATE NEEDS Ask for what you want in a loving way rather than being negative or holding it in and being resentful. For example: “Why are you late? We haven’t had dinner together as a family in weeks!” VS. “I would really like you to be home on time for dinner. Our family feels incomplete without you and it is real important to me that we eat dinner

together.” We all know this one however it is practicing it that is difficult! ASSUME THEIR INNOCENCE ... instead of assuming their guilt. Remember when you were dating and your spouse could do no wrong? When they did goof up, you thought, “That’s just not like him/her,” and you continued concentrating on what you loved about him/her. Spend one day seeing him/her like that. GET PHYSICAL No, not like that! Touch and hold each other throughout the day without it necessarily leading to sex. Touching releases chemicals in your body that give you a sense of increased well-being. MINDFULNESS Read something inspirational, pray and/or meditate with together before you rise every day.

WHAT’S MINE IS YOURS Make his/her success just as important as your own. Be sure you make this fun and not another burden to carry. KNOW THEIR LOVE LANGUAGE Do something loving for him/her when you don’t feel like it. Know their love language. If “Acts of Service” is how they feel loved - go out of your way to do something that will relieve their stress. If “Words of Affirmation” is their language, write them a simple note in the morning reassuring them of your feelings. FORGIVENESS IS KEY Forgive quickly rather than making them suffer for what they did. Why make yourself miserable? If you are struggling to let go, think inwardly and find the root cause. What are you really holding on to? SELF AWARENESS Examine your beliefs about relationships and about your willingness to allow someone to love you. Many of us carry around destructive unconscious beliefs. If your are not having the relationship you want, you may want to check out your belief system with a therapist. MAKE YOU HAPPY Take good care of yourself so you are not dependent on your spouse to make you happy. Try new things, find hobbies, spend time with friends ... it is important to remember that you are YOU and not just a spouse or parent!

MONITOR NEGATIVITY Monitor your thoughts. How often are you thinking judgmental thoughts about your spouse? Play this game with yourself: for every negative thought you have, you have to think of three positive things about them. You CAN have the relationship of your dreams. Marriage doesn’t have to take a lot of hard work. The power lies in having clear intentions. Unfortunately, some of us spend time just making it from day to day. We become oblivious to how we feel and how we make others feel. How do we determine our intentions? We determine them by looking at our results! If you don’t like what you have in your relationship, change your intention. It takes a brave individual to look at life this way because it is often easier to blame someone else than it is to take responsibility for our lives.! Kathryn Kvols is the author of the best selling book and popular parenting course, “Redirecting Children’s Behavior.” She is an international speaker and the president of the International Network for Children and Families. KID Potential Who Are We at Kid Potential? We are one of 550 providers of a nationally researched pair of programs called PACE and Master The Code. PACE stands for Processing and Cognitive Enhancement and Master the Code, the other program we offer, re-teaches reading, writing, and spelling codes. The goal of PACE and Master the Code is to build brain based learning skills until they reach or exceed age appropriate levels. Students who complete the program can read, write, and spell fluently. The PACE program, developed by Dr. Ken Gibson and a collaborating team of learning and medical professionals of Colorado Springs, CO, is based on the idea that there are six underlying areas in the brain that govern learning. If these areas 10

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

are strong and well developed, the student will be an A/B student. If these areas are weak or underdeveloped, the student will struggle in school and in life. The results at Kid Potential are dramatic. Typically our students are going up 4 years reading level in only 60 hours of individual instruction and we guarantee results. For FREE Testing, call Stacy Collins, Cognitive Trainer at (808) 744-2867 or email at kidpotential@hotmail.com. Visit our website at www.kidpotentialflorida.com.

DRAMA KIDS of Manasota Drama Kids of Manasota is delighted to be chosen for the second year in a row as this year’s winner of the Best After-School Program for 2020. Led by director, Tamara Solum, Drama Kids has been providing our award-winning program for 18 years to students age 5-18 throughout Sarasota and Manatee Counties. This year, due to COVID-19, classes are both online and in person (with reduced class size, socially distant and masks). As a developmental acting program, the prime aim of Drama Kids is to give children ongoing confidence and skill in verbal communication. Our program provides a non-competitive atmosphere where children participate in a wide variety of speech, movement and acting activities to help them with creative expression, team-building skills and verbal clarity and culminates in an end-of-year performance. 14

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

Drama Kids wants to thank all of our families for entrusting their child’s theatre arts education to Drama Kids through the years. What a blessing it is to see each child gain new skills and become more confident and eloquent communicators. During this difficult time, we are so lucky to be able to lead children to connect with others, to laugh together, to process conflict, to build empathy, to practice compassion, and use language to express themselves clearly and confidently. To register please go to our website www.dramakids.com/fl1 or call us at (941)922-8121.

BRIGHT smiles How to Avoid Common Orthodontic Problems by Dr. Maribel Santos-Cordero, Dentistry for Children & Adolescents

As parents we want our children to have a beautiful smile. We may believe that because we had braces our children must need them as well. After all, it’s in the genes, right? But, what if that’s not completely accurate? While the growth of your child’s face and mouth is determined by genetic factors, it is also determined by environmental influences. If we can control these influences, the less harmful they will be to the growing bones and muscles of the face. Parents may first consider orthodontics when they become aware of a “bad bite”. This usually happens 18

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

between 6-12 y/o. The real problem is that 60% of your child’s facial development is complete by the age of 8 and 90% by the age of 12. Many root causes of crooked bites and facial imbalances may be a direct result of issues that begin much earlier in life.

Here are the top five causes of Orthodontic problems >>

While orthodontic problems like crossbites, open bites, crowding, and “bucked “teeth may be fixed at almost any age, early intervention can sometimes prevent the need for more extensive treatment. Addressing these root causes earlier can have an impact in the development of your child’s face and mouth.

ABNORMAL TONGUE POSTURE Unless you are eating or speaking, your tongue should be passively resting up against the roof of the mouth, also known as the palate. A tongue that hangs low or forward is not activating the muscles that connect to your face, jaws and neck. Your palate grows high and narrow because the tongue is unable to counteract

the cheek muscles or shape the palate wider. A smaller area for teeth to grow also leads to crowding. An incorrect tongue posture may be due to mouth breathing, a tongue-tie, a narrow palate or a tongue that is thrusting forward or sideways. Children with these issues may develop a lisp, other speech impediments or difficulties swallowing. MOUTH BREATHING Children with nasal airway obstructions like chronic allergies and swollen tonsils & adenoids have difficulties breathing through the nose. When this happens, the body’s response is to use the mouth to breathe. Nose breathing is essential to the proper growth of jaws and teeth. An open mouth and a low tongue posture forces the lower jaw to grow more vertically and the face to grow longer. When nasal breathing is compromised, the upper jaw and midface also fail to develop appropriately. POOR LIP POSTURE Lips should be closed and touching at rest. If they don’t, other oral structures need to be activated to achieve this result. Lack of adequate muscle tone may cause the lower lip to flop down. An open mouth posture can also keep the lips apart. To bring the lips together, your chin as well as other orofacial muscles must strain. These external forces can cause changes in facial development, tooth alignment, breathing, swallowing and jaw joint (TMJ) function. PROLONGED ORAL HABITS Although sucking habits are common in babies, prolonged thumb sucking or pacifier habits may cause the jaws to reshape and teeth to grow out of alignment. With frequent and intense habits you may observe “bucked” teeth or an open space in the front. Open bites are caused by reshaping of the palate due to vigorous pressure and may cause

the tongue to be positioned forward when swallowing. SOFT DIET Diets that mainly include soft foods like puffs and purees can interfere with the normal development of the mastication muscles and the jaws. Chewing on raw vegetables and fresh fruit allows your cheek muscles to strengthen and the jaws to grow wider. Environmental influences that change the normal oral posture can affect the growth and development of your child’s face. A multidisciplinary team approach may be needed to help your child overcome these influences. Your pediatric dentist or orthodontist may assess early dental and facial growth changes and refer you to an ENT to resolve possible nasal airway obstructions. Oral myofunctional therapy, tongue-tie surgery and various dental appliances may also be recommended to revert old habits and retrain the tongue and other oral muscles. An ideal development of the jaws and teeth does more than a pretty smile. It also helps improve breathing, chewing, speech, TMJ health and optimal facial structure support. While we can’t change our genes, we can certainly do our best to alter environmental influences on our children’s growth & development and allow them to reach their true potential.! Dr. Maribel Santos-Cordero is a board-certified pediatric dentist in Lakewood Ranch dedicated to the oral health of children, adolescents and children with special needs. She believes in taking a preventive approach to dentistry and helping children achieve their full potential by providing all the necessary tools to achieve optimal oral health. NATHAN Benderson Park Want to make time on the water a family thing, and not just an out-of-school thing? No problem. The park’s NBP Rec Days! are family-oriented afternoons on the water. And the experience is amazing, too. For a small fee, children and families can try stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, canoes, a pedal pontoon boat, fishing and even sailing. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to sail — you don’t have to know, because there’s a trained, seasoned captain at the helm of that 15-foot sailboat. Just remember to wear your face masks aboard the sailboat. From 10 a.m.–2 p.m. on alternating Saturdays, and on Wednesdays of the weeks there’s no Saturday NBP Rec Days!, there’s outdoor fun for everyone. Learn more about NBP Rec Days! at NathanBendersonPark.org/recdays. 30

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

Learn more about the park’s minicamps, including the schedule and themes of coming minicamps, at NBPCamp.com. You can also call the park at 941-358-7275. Looking for summer fun? Great opportunities for your kids that help build skills, make memories and even teach life lessons — and are naturally socially distant — are within easy reach. Maybe even just the length of a paddle! Nathan Benderson Park’s minicamps for ages 6–14 provide a unique day camp experience that includes paddling (kayaks, canoes and paddleboards), freshwater fishing, archery and more. They’re a great way to take a break from school!
