TIRED OF nagging? 3 practical alternatives by Kathryn Kvols

“Jason, turn off the TV please,” mom requests nicely. One minute later,“Jason, I said turn off the TV!” Moms voice tightens.
• Kids fighting at the table? Pick up your plate and have relaxing meal in your bedroom. • Rolled up smelly socks in the hamper? Only wash socks that are unrolled.
Two minutes later, “JASON, if you don’t turn off the TV right now you can forget about going to soccer practice,” threatens Mom.
• Kids fighting in the car? Pull over to the side of the road and don’t drive until they are quiet, do not speak to them, do not look at them, just sit quietly and wait.
Been there, done that and got the t-shirt! Nagging Fatigue Syndrome (NFS) can strike when you least expect it. You find yourself leaning

room, simply say, “shoes.”You may need to say it one or two more times. Make sure you say it in a cool and calm demeanor. For a better effect, say it in a playful tone of voice. Nagging and yelling disturbs our peace and our relationship with our children. Using these method will help you feel more peaceful and confident. An additional bonus is that your children will be more cooperative! !
Ask yourself, “What action can I take?” instead of talking. Actions speak louder than words ... against the refrigerator, your forehead pressed against the cool freezer and muttering to yourself, “Why doesn’t anyone listen to me!” Nagging is about as smart as taking a bath with a hair dryer. Our children become parent deaf and learn to tune us out at a very young age. They also learn, I don’t have to listen until she screams. One reason we get into this dilemma is that we think using more force will actually work. This is usually a recipe for failure. Force makes children either compliant or defiant. Neither of which are very appealing. What can we do instead? Here are three alternatives to prevent NFS:
• Messy kitchen? Be unwilling to cook in a messy kitchen.
2. Use signals. Say to your child,

LEARNING styles What it is and why it is important
Do you know your child’s preferred learning style? Does your daughter tend to memorize information after simply reading it? Does your son enjoy building detailed lego kits? These behaviors are often indicators of learning preferences. It is important to identify a child’s learning style in order to ensure the best chance for academic success.
The seven main learning styles are as follows: visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic, logical, social, and solitary. Visual and auditory learners have an advantage, as traditional classroom instruction is catered more towards them. Visual learners do well by reading, viewing lists, charts, images, reading their teachers’ facial expressions, diagrams, etc. Auditory learners benefit form verbal instruction, talking through problems, and using rhythm and music as memory aids.
Tactile and kinesthetic learners may have had a more difficult time in classrooms years ago, but teachers today are fortunately much more willing to allow children to move about the room to engage in the lesson. Kinesthetic learners need to move their bodies as they learn, and tactile learners like to use their hands to comprehend the material. Both of these preferences are conducive to building 2D or 3D models with clay, play dough,
or building materials such as legos. Kinesthetic learners might like to learn about the human body, for example, by jumping, running, stretching, and discussing which parts of the body are allowing them to do such things. Both tactile and kinesthetic learners might enjoy doing their writing assignments on large marker boards or butcher paper, so they are not confined to a desk and can immerse themselves more into the project.
individualized study plans. It is important to find a niche of interest for a solitary learner and base lessons around that. For example, if you have a child obsessed with airplanes you can use this to teach about gravity, weather, physics, and movement. Fortunately for students who prefer to learn independently, there is a new community of online learning where these solitary learners can feel comfortable and succeed.
A good age to begin identifying your child’s learning style is around 6-7 Also, a kinesthetic learner is more likely to memorize facts while playing catch, jumping rope, or clapping. Children in both of these categories would learn better though a hands-on science experiment rather than simply reading about a concept via text. Another type of learning preference is logical. The logical learner enjoys mathematics, proving equations, and using reasoning and systems. This student will do well to write out lists of goals or steps to figure something out. He is likely to use the scientific method approach solve a problem, and he may become frustrated if he doesn’t know why something is the way it is. Quite often, logical learners excel with technology, providing them an advantage in more modern classrooms. The last two categories of learning preferences are social and solitary. Social students thrive by working in groups, while those who prefer solitary learning may not. These students will do better with self-paced learning and
So now that you know the basic learning styles, chances are you see your child in one or more category. A good age to begin identifying your child’s learning style is around 6-7, as by this point, his/her preferences are likely established. Once you and your child’s teacher know your child’s learning preference(s), it is recommended that he/she be taught using a variety of methods, and not just appeal to the identified style. While it is important to teach the most difficult lessons using that preference, it is also necessary to reinforce lessons using multiple other styles. To truly ensure the best chance of success, teachers need to provide learning tools to enhance and improve abilities in areas where students are weaker. An auditory learner should be taught using a kinesthetic lesson plan, but the teacher should aid that student in working through a lesson such as this, as it is not conducive to his natural abilities. ! www.FloridaFamilyLiving.com

SUMMER CAMP How to select the perfect camp for your child by the Editors at Family Living Magazine
As another school year comes to an end, many parents are facing the annual challenge of having to plan a summer full of exciting activities for their kids. With both parents working, even vacation time that parents typically take becomes stretched to the limit, with many long summer days still left before school re-opens. Summer camps are a wonderful option for parents looking for ways to keep their kids busy while having fun. They can offer great opportunities for your child to socialize, learn new skills, expand their horizons, grow as individuals, and, of course, make new friends. How does a parent select the right camp for their child? Read on for some 10
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
tips to help you zero in on the perfect camp. Start with Determining the Type of Camp.
Performing arts camps that specialize in theatre, music, film, dancing, languages or painting
Traditional camps that offer a little bit of everything – this could be swimming, soccer, hiking, arts and crafts and more.
Sports camps that let you sharpen your skills in tennis, soccer, or baseball
science, math, or even creative writing. These camps are an excellent way to give your child some extra help in an area he may be weak in during the school year, or you may want to give your child a head start by preparing for the upcoming school year.
Most of these camps are day camps – that is, camps that your child attends during the day and is home by dinner. These camps are perfect for children as young as 5 right up to teenagers and tend to run for a short duration – usually by the week – and therefore offer your child the opportunity to explore different interests.
Adventure camps that are all about outdoor hobbies like rafting, mountaineering, or horse-back riding
There are also overnight camps that become suitable for children as they reach 9 or 10. While an
Academic camps that focus on
overnight camp isn’t for everyone, it offers your child the opportunity to pick up really valuable social and life skills and chances to take on new responsibilities. Some kids may experience separation anxiety and homesickness – yet most children seem to adapt in a matter of a few days given that there are many camp directors skilled in the delicate art of wiping away the tears of first-time overnight campers.
Choosing the Right Camp As a parent, you know your child best – their hobbies, interests and comfort level with trying new things. Ask these questions in your quest to finding the right camp:
1. What do you and your child want to gain from the camp experience? 2. What are the special interests that your child wants to explore? 3. Does your child have any physical, intellectual, or social limitations? 4. What kind of emphasis will your child profit from the most? Parents also need to keep in mind that the summer camp experience is about their child – and not them. It’s important you don’t force your child to attend a camp that really interests you. You may love art, but your kid may have no interest in becoming the next Picasso. Chances are she’ll have a miserable experience and may resist trying camps in the future. The summer months provide an exciting time for kids to develop new interests, explore their environments, work on refining special skills, make new friends or build on their existing friendships. ! DUDE ranch A family vacation ... unplugged! by Gail Miller, owner GEM Travel Consultants
28
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
Communication has never been easier. We Tweet, Facebook, Skype and Snapchat. We post photos of last night’s dinner and our latest shopping spree. This summer would be a good time to shut it all off and unplug to
the morning ride. If you have some real animal lovers in your family, they will want to get to the barn early to help saddle the horses. If this is your first time riding that is no problem. The cow hands are very experienced and will pick the
but the family running the dude ranch does have access and they can help you when connecting is important (but you will probably forget to ask). The dude ranch also gives a wonderful anchor for day trips and exploring the surrounding area such as the Grand Canyon or an old historical, restored prairie town. Leave some time for an authentic steam engine train ride and maybe get to experience a train robbery re-enactment. Even though this is an “Unplugged Vacation,” you will want to keep your phone or camera charged to get some pictures of this beautiful part of our country. No passport is required to travel back in time to an era of “guts and grit.”
Go west for adventure! an earlier time where communicating was done person to person. Add some sunshine and crisp mountain air, and you can reconnect to your soul too. Many destinations can provide new experiences and family time, but a Dude Ranch fulfills the old adage of “Go West, Young Man.” Dude ranches bring the whole family together for adventure and new experiences. If you would like to escape the heat of a Florida summer, look to the snow capped mountains of Wyoming. Wake up in a cozy wooden cabin, warmed by the fire in the old corner stove from a four poster bed, beneath a hand-made comforter. Step out on the wooden planked porch to listen to the rushing brook flowing steps away from your cabin. A big hearty farm breakfast is waiting at the lodge. The hardest part will be getting the family to crawl out of bed. Enjoy breakfast, but don’t dawdle because the cow hands are already getting the horses ready for
proper horse for you. They will take your experience, height and weight into consideration. If this is your first ride, nothing can prepare you for the sights and sounds from the saddle of a horse. If you are lucky enough to have mom, dad, brothers and sisters sons and daughters, grandmas and grandpas with you, this experience becomes unforgettable.
Don’t wait to plan a summer vacation like this, as many of these dude ranches are run by families that have constructed some old looking cabins on part of their ranch and don’t have much occupancy. These fill up sometimes a year in advance. !
Pick a good ranch that lets you help with the horses as much as you wish. If you prefer to let the cow hands do all the work, that is “OK” too. Look for opportunities to visit old gold mines, picnic lunches along the trail and camp fires with bar-b-ques in the evenings. No one is going to miss the televisions, phones and iPads as by the end of the day, everyone is ready for bed. Usually there is poor internet and phone service in the mountains, www.FloridaFamilyLiving.com

14 SUMMER SAFETY
health
TIPS FOR
WATER SAFETY 1. Adult supervision is of paramount importance. Parents need to focus on their children 100% of the time. No distractions! 2. Practice “touch supervision” (a term used by the American Academy of Pediatrics). This means that at all times, the supervising adult is within an arm’s length of the child being watched, when near or in the water. 3. Remember, no child or adult is “drown proof.” 4. Keep in mind that children can drown in many different water sources including: bathtubs, toilets, buckets, baby pools, backyard swimming pools, community pools, streams, creeks, lakes, rivers, oceans and other places.
SUN PROTECTION 5. Avoid sun exposure during peak sun hours (10 AM – 6 PM). 6. Wear protective clothing and a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses (with 99-100% UV protection). 7. Sunscreen is a must (on sunny and cloudy days)! Look for products with UVA and UVB protection and an SPF of at least. 8. Sunscreen should be applied liberally 30 minutes before going out in the sun, and reapplied every two hours or sooner if swimming, sweating or toweling off. 9. Look for shade whenever possible.
DEHYDRATION AND HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES
10. Keeping well hydrated is very important. 11. Children (and adults) must remember to drink. 12. Do not wait until a child says he is thirsty before offering fluids. At this point, he is already dehydrated, so be sure to provide plenty of fluids before going outside, while out in the heat and afterwards. 13. Playing in the hot summer sun means lots of fluid losses, so avoid strenuous activity during peak sun hours (10 am- 6 pm). Look for shade and take lots of breaks. 14. Seek medical attention immediately for any signs of heat-related illness. 30
