STOMP OUT

boredom 10 ideas for family game night By Beth Winkle, Editor of Family Living Magazine

One of my most cherished memories from childhood is sitting in my “Nanny’s” cottage by the fire and playing Rummy 500. I cherish those days and now love hosting a good old-fashioned game night too. It’s so much fun to get together with family and laugh the night away – often without spending a dime. You don’t have to buy a new game to keep the laughs coming.

Classic Games PICTIONARY Not an artist? Not a problem. Get ready for loads of laughter! You can create your own game set with a white board and some fun words to draw written on slips of paper, or you can buy the actual Pictionary game by Hasbro ($30.) 5. CHARADES

Card Games EGYPTIAN WAR This is probably my all-time favorite card game. It is similar to regular war in that the object of the game is to take possession of all the cards in the deck. This game could last 5 minutes or 5 hours. Google the rules, also known as Egyptian Ratscrew. SPADES If you want to play a card game with four players, think… the game of Spades. You can play with a partner which will add even more excitement. SPOONS This game is played by sitting in a circle with one less spoon in the middle than there are participants (like musical chairs). Each player starts with 4 cards. The goal is to get 4 of the same rank. As a deck of cards is passed around the circle one card at a time, your goal is to find a desired card and exchange it for one you need to discard. Once you get 4 cards of the same rank, discreetly grab a spoon from the middle. When other players notice a spoon is missing, they all attempt to grab a spoon, so they don’t go out. 4

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

You can never go wrong with a classic game like charades. Split into teams and have one person from each team act out a movie, book, or TV show to see who can guess the answer.

Cheap Games 6. DOMINOES

Like a deck of cards, dominoes are versatile and can be played many ways. I enjoy Mexican Train and Chickenfoot. You can buy a set of dominoes for as little as $15. 7. UNO OR OTHER SPECIAL CARD GAME A game does not need to be complex to be fun. Uno, Phase 10, and Skip-Bo are great choices. A deck of Uno cards starts at around $7. 8. APPLES TO APPLES EXPANSION A popular game is Apples to Apples. In this game, you match up adjectives and nouns for a night of hilarious comparisons. To save money, buy just the expansion set or the travel version.

Free Games 9. WOULD YOU RATHER The more creative you are, the more fun this game can be. For this game, the players move to one side of the room or another depending on what they prefer given two options. For example, the first set of options might be wearing shoes or going barefoot. The person who is “it” would announce,“Would you rather wear shoes or go barefoot?” If your answer is you prefer to wear shoes, you would go to the left, but if you would rather be barefoot, you would go to the right. Keep track of the answers to see who has the most in common with each other. 10. THE GAME OF “THINGS” If you have ever played The Game of Things, you’ll be able to play my version of the game. Instead of paying full price for the actual game, just make up the questions yourself. If you have never played The Game of Things, get ready for some side-splitting laughs. One person is “it” and will say a statement that will have a thing as the answer, such as “Things you shouldn’t do while at school.” Everyone then writes on a piece of paper something that shouldn’t be done at school, such as sleep. >>

<<The person who is “it” then collects all the answers and reads them out loud. Then, go around the room letting people guess a match up of a person and an answer. If they are correct, that person gets a point, and the person whose answer was guessed is out. Continue going around the room until one person is left. That person gets three points.

Other Tips TRY IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT! If you are not sure if you want to invest money in a game, check out Hasbro Games Demo site where you can try out some of their popular games, including Cranium, Funglish, and The Game of Things. You could also try all these demos at game night and have a “smorgasbord” of games! An alternative to playing a game is to do a puzzle. This will give you a good opportunity to really talk with each other and find out whats going in their lives. !

STAY AT home Tips to keep your child healthy By Maribel Santos-Cordero, DMD, Dentistry for Children & Adolescents

Staying at home during this COVID-19 Pandemic has forced us to be creative and re-think the way we do life. With so much uncertainty, there are things that you can still control. Many of your daily activities can have a direct effect on the oral health and ultimately overall growth and development of your child. SNACK SMART Children need to snack in order to keep their energy levels sustained throughout the day. Avoid stocking up on emptycalorie snacks like chips and sugary treats that can make your child hungry again in no time and many cause hyperactivity from a sugar rush. Keep also in mind that cavity-producing bacteria in the mouth come in contact with sugars to produce acids that breakdown the enamel and may lead to tooth decay. 6

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

Give your child snacks that will build energy and keep them satisfied for a long time. Choose snacks that are full of protein, vitamins and good fats like: • Peanut or almond butter with celery or an apple • Granola bars • Yogurt and fruit • Fruit smoothies • Turkey and cheese wraps Fruits and veggies are like natural toothbrushes. The chewing effect mixed with saliva may help reduce the amount of plaque that’s produced and stimulate proper growth and development of the jaws. Healthy options can help your child have a healthier smile. KEEP A ROUTINE Staying safe at home means no more rushing your kids to school and staying in your pajamas for a little longer. Whether your kids are

staying late to catch their favorite TV show or waking up late to start home school, resist the temptation to skip a good oral hygiene routine. Create a calendar that includes brushing at least twice a day and flossing every night. If your child is 8 y/o or younger, the mechanical ability to do good dental hygiene may not be fully developed. Spend time teaching and helping them brush and floss. My rule for flossing is not age related. If you don’t see a space in-between teeth, you must floss that area. Frequent snacking through the day will require more toothbrushing sessions. Do not panic if you run out or can’t find your child’s favorite toothpaste! Just the action of brushing will be enough to remove the plaque and food from the teeth. In keeping a good oral hygiene routine, you will help your kid’s smile stay healthy until you can return to your pediatric dentist for routine dental care.

EXERCISE FOR FUN Keeping your child active improves their overall attitude and ability to learn. Make time for indoor recess and involve everyone in the activity. Even if you don’t have much space indoors, there are fun ways to keep your child active at home: • Indoor soccer or broom-hockey (Carefully toss the ball around) • In-place exercises (Jumping jacks, Jump rope, Crawling) • Freeze Dance (Dance only when the music plays) A good workout will make your child thirsty. Choose water instead of a sports drink to keep them hydrated. Sports drinks are not only sugary but also acidic. This is not a good combination to keep your child’s dental enamel strong and cavity-free. SLEEP TO THRIVE Many children get the right amount of sleep but not the quality sleep that they need in order to grow and develop properly. If your child snores, mouth breathes, is a restless sleeper or falls asleep frequently throughout the day, chances are the brain and body are not getting enough oxygen during sleep time.

Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) usually involves a blockage of the airway in the child’s throat or nose. It may manifest itself with random symptoms like: poor attention, bedwetting, allergies, behavioral issues, nightmares, learning difficulties and crooked teeth. Many of these health issues may have a dental root cause that can often be corrected with timely intervention. SDB can be easily overlooked, misdiagnosed and unfortunately left untreated. While at home, observe your child for any of these symptoms if you suspect they are not getting the quality of sleep needed in order to thrive. The last few weeks have been very difficult and right now we don’t know what the future holds. This too shall pass and we will go back to our old routines. Keeping these good habits will help your family stay stronger and your child healthy for years to come. !

Dr. Maribel Santo-Cordero is a board-certified pediatric dentist in Lakewood Ranch dedicated to the oral health of children, adolescents and children with special needs. She believes in helping children achieve their full potential by providing all the necessary tools to achieve optimal oral health, in particular those with Sleep Disordered Breathing. BRAIN BOOSTING POPSICLES

DIY popsicles with an added nutrition boost By Gregg Sledziewski, Executive Director, Brain Wave Center of Sarasota

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

Florida sunshine is year round, so is your child’s boundless energy! Let’s channel that into a fun project they can help with and reap all the benefits. We found some recipes that highlight fresh mega fruits and dropped the refined sugar of processed popsicles. So grab your favorite fruits and get creative! THE ESSENTIALS Molds: Popsicle making technology has impressively advanced since most of us were kids. Go to Amazon for a million choices, or get creative with shapes from plastic containers from home. Fruit: puree naturally sweetened fruit with lemon or lime for some acidity to reduce the overly icy texture. Fruit juice such as orange, lemon, guava, grape or apple make the most reliable pops that tend to melt slower. A combination of puree and juice mixed also works to infuse different flavors. To add texture and visual appeal, you can chop small or thinly sliced pieces of fruit like watermelon, strawberry, mango, pineapple or kiwi. Creamy Popsicles: Adding yogurt for protein and probiotics for digestive health creates a natural creaminess that adds a smooth texture. Pureed bananas with the juice can also create a soft bite. Unsweetened coconut milk adds a creamy popsicle texture with subtle sweet flavor. Mixing or blending juice, whole fruit and something creamy also make for a consistently creamy popsicle. Freeze Time: Depending on the ingredients, at least 4 to 6 hours is needed to turn the parts from liquid to solid. Overnight freezing is the safest bet, and something to look forward to the next day! When finished in Freezer: Removing Popsicles From Mold- Run the molds under warm water for ten to fifteen seconds. Slowly and carefully remove each popsicle. If the popsicles remain in the mold, run them under the warm water for a few more seconds, ensuring not to melt the pops. Freeze or eat immediately!

FLAVOR COMBOS THAT BOOST BRAIN POWER • Blackberry or Blueberry & Lemon • Orange Mango Coconut • Guava, Pomegranate, & Lemon • Minty Watermelon Any Combination of your favorites may also include: Blueberry, Pineapple, Mangoes, Tangerines to boost Vitamin B6 and C. ORANGE MANGO COCONUT - Puree 3 cups mango slices, 1 1/2 cup coconut milk, orange juice and honey. - Cut the remaining 1 cup mango slices into 1/4 inch cubes. Evenly divide them among the popsicle molds. - Add 3 tablespoons of mango coconut mixture, gently tapping mold on the counter to make sure liquid fills in the diced mango spaces. - Add 1 tablespoon of coconut milk, or until the mold is filled. Insert the popsicle sticks, and then freeze for at least 6 hours, or overnight.

BLACKBERRY LEMON - In a medium-sized bowl whisk together lemon juice, zest, and vanilla yogurt, set aside. - Puree blackberries and mixed berry yogurt, set aside. - Layer the popsicles as follows; 1 tablespoon lemon, 1 tablespoon blackberry, repeat. Swirl layers if desired. - Gently tap the molds on the countertop to remove any air bubbles. Insert the popsicle sticks, and then freeze for at least 6 hours, or overnight. !

TIPS FOR

WATER SAFETY 1. Adult supervision is of paramount importance. Parents need to focus on their children 100% of the time. No distractions! 2. Practice “touch supervision” (a term used by the American Academy of Pediatrics). This means that at all times, the supervising adult is within an arm’s length of the child being watched, when near or in the water. 3. Remember, no child or adult is “drown proof.” 4. Keep in mind that children can drown in many different water sources including: bathtubs, toilets, buckets, baby pools, backyard swimming pools, community pools, streams, creeks, lakes, rivers, oceans and other places.

SUN PROTECTION 5. Avoid sun exposure during peak sun hours (10 AM – 6 PM). 6. Wear protective clothing and a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses (with 99-100% UV protection). 7. Sunscreen is a must (on sunny and cloudy days)! Look for products with UVA and UVB protection and an SPF of at least. 8. Sunscreen should be applied liberally 30 minutes before going out in the sun, and reapplied every two hours or sooner if swimming, sweating or toweling off. 9. Look for shade whenever possible.

DEHYDRATION AND HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES

10. Keeping well hydrated is very important. 11. Children (and adults) must remember to drink. 12. Do not wait until a child says he is thirsty before offering fluids. At this point, he is already dehydrated, so be sure to provide plenty of fluids before going outside, while out in the heat and afterwards. 13. Playing in the hot summer sun means lots of fluid losses, so avoid strenuous activity during peak sun hours (10 am- 6 pm). Look for shade and take lots of breaks. 14. Seek medical attention immediately for any signs of heat-related illness. 10

SUMMER camps The benefits of sending kids to a day camp By Sarah Lyons

Many parents want their kids to experience summer camps ... But the idea of spending several nights away from home is a little scary for both the parent and child. A great alternative, especially for younger kids, is to send them to day camp. Day camp, as the name implies, typically consist of a series of consecutive days where they child is away during the daytime hours. . Children leave in the morning to have the camp experience and come home in the afternoon or evening to have dinner with their families and sleep in their own beds. Day camp gives kids many of the same learning experiences as a typical sleepover camp.

BUILDS INDEPENDENCE Camp is a great place for kids to explore their own independence and day camp is no different. Kids are dropped off at camp in the morning where they are challenged with new activities that they may not get the 12

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

opportunity to try at home. They will make friends, eat lunch, and follow directions without the help of their parents. Kids start to feel more self confident and independent as the week goes on.

LEARN NEW SKILLS Day camps typically offer opportunities to learn and grow in areas that children may not be exposed to at school. Kids can pick camps that tailor to their interest including a variety of sports, music, dance, theater, science, art, exploring nature, and more. If your child is drawn to a particular activity or subject, chances are there is a camp that would interest them. Kids who are not particularly drawn to academics will thrive in day camps because they are rewarded for their talents and interests. MAKE NEW FRIENDS While you may sign your child up for a camp with a friend, they will meet many new people their age. Children

gain confidence as they learn to talk to and work with people that they have never played with previously. The opportunity to make friends with children that share similar interests and a fun new experience helps kids feel more comfortable when they are in new situations.

TAKE A BREAK FROM THE SCREEN When children spend time at day camp, they get a much needed break from screen time. As video games, apps, TV, and tablets take more and more of our free time, getting the kids outside to play or having fun while learning new skills is a priceless benefit to parents. Who knows? When the kids come home from camp, they may realize they don’t need as much screen time as they thought they did.

LIFELONG SKILLS Day camp helps kids learn skills they can use for a lifetime including problem solving and leadership skills, improved confidence, and an openness to new things. Depending on the camp, they may learn other skills that will stick with them. My kids learned how to start a fire and cook their own meal at local scouting camps. My daughter gained the confidence to get on stage in front of a room full of parents and peers at theater camp. My kids improved their skills at sport camps and they faced their fears while trying the camp obstacle course. These experiences will stay with your child throughout their life as they are faced with challenges and successes in the future. As you are deciding if day camp is right for your family, consider what type of camp your child would be most interested in. Choose something that you know they will be successful at and consider inviting a friend to sign up with your child. This can make them more comfortable that first day. Let your child help you choose the right camp and then let them know you think they will do great. !

BACKYARD camping Ideas to make it feel genuine By Jaclyn Smither, Creative Director Family Living Magazine

Every year kids look forward to the school bell ringing for the last time. They have been day dreaming about summer camp, being with friends, pool parties and going on vacation! Family vacations are a time honored summer tradition. Unfortunately this year has parents scrambling, changing their yearly plans, and scratching their heads with one question in mind:

“What are we going to do all summer long?” Thankfully a special family vacation is only a frisbee toss away! The funny thing about children ... their imagination is endless. Most kids don’t remember the resort, how comfortable the beds were, where they ate, or the details of traveling to a destination. They remember the memories made along the way. Give your kids the summer vacation you BOTH deserve by hosting an unforgettable backyard camping experience. Use these tips and tricks to make it feel as authentic as possible: 30

GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING

PACK A BAG Pack a suitcase like you would if you were actually leaving your home. This may seem silly, but it will help set the tone for the whole weekend. Let the kids decide their outfits, toys, games and have them help you gather all camping necessities. This will reduce the need to utilize your home throughout the weekend. SET UP A TENT Once outside, find the perfect spot to set up a real tent. Have everyone pitch in and teach them the proper way to set up a campsite. Lay out blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, and secure all possessions inside the tent so their clothes and games are easily accessible, not scattered. BUILD A FIRE Teach them the importance of fire safety! Create a safe area and make a small fire to cook with. Cooking over a campfire can produce delicious food and is a fun camping activity. Everyone preps their own food. Later the fire can be used for s’mores & stories! Too dry outside or against your H.O.A? Drag your grill over to your “campsite” for easy cooking. Set up

chairs, a table or picnic area to eat at. Make it as authentic as possible! ACTIVITIES & GAMES The “campsite” is fully set up, now the fun begins! Have activities planned like you would if you were really camping. Here are our favorites: SCAVENGER HUNT Create a list with items they could find right in their own backyard. From birds to bugs, plants, flowers and everything in between, see how many you can check off your list! PRO TIP: Have them craft toilet paper roll binoculars to accessorize.

See how many constellations you can find. Don’t have good visibility? Download an app to help find the stars in the sky. STARGAZE

Charades, Uno, SkipBo, Hide & Go Seek, Manhunt, and Corn Hole are all fantastic family fun games! PRO TIP: Make a nighttime Hop Scotch or Ring Toss with glow sticks from the Dollar Store. PLAY GAMES

The more creative you get, the more it will feel like a true vacation. Set boundaries so no one goes inside, and enjoy making memories with your children this summer!

S’mores SUMMER FAVORITE

Dreaming of this summertime dessert? Whether its at a campsite or right in your own backyard, teaching children how to make this classic treat will bring the family together and ignite traditions for years to come.

Instructions STEP 1 Light your fire. Make sure that it is in a controlled environment. (grill, fire pit, etc.) STEP 2 Once your fire is under way, open up the packages of food. Break graham crackers and chocolate bars into halves to make squares. STEP 3 Find the right tool for roasting a marshmallow. Traditionally if camping, you would find a thin stick to whittle into a roasting utensil. Or bring your own! Kabob skewers or wire clothes hangers are great options. STEP 4 Place a marshmallow on the roasting stick and hold over flame. Make sure you turn it! Keep turning until golden brown. STEP 5 Use two graham cracker squares and a square of chocolate to sandwich the marshmallow between. Keep napkins on hand for the gooey mess. Enjoy!
