THE RIGHT discipline 9 things to do instead of spanking By Kathryn Kvols, Author
Research confirms what many parents instinctively feel when they don’t like to spank their children, but they don’t know what else to do. The latest research from Dr. Murray Straus at the Family Research Laboratory affirms that spanking teaches children to use acts of aggression and violence to solve their problems. It only teaches and perpetuates more violence, the very thing that our society is so concerned about. This research further shows that children who have been spanked are more prone to low self-esteem, depression and accept lower paying jobs as adults. So, what do you do instead? GET CALM First, if you feel angry and out of control and you want to spank or slap your child, leave the situation if you can. Calm down and get quiet. In that quiet time you will often find an alternative or solution to the problem. Sometimes parents lose it because they are under a lot of stress. Dinner is boiling over, the kids are fighting, the phone is ringing and your child drops the can of peas then you lose it. If you can’t leave the situation, then mentally step back and count to ten. 4
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF Parents are more prone to use spanking when they haven’t had any time to themselves and they feel depleted and hurried. So, it is important for parents to take some time for themselves to exercise, read, take a walk or pray. BE KIND BUT FIRM Another frustrating situation where parents tend to spank is when your child hasn’t listened to your repeated requests to behave. Finally, you spank to get your child to act appropriately. Another solution in these situations is to get down on your child’s level, make eye contact, touch him gently and tell him, in a short, kind but firm phrase, what it is you want him to do. For example,“I want you to play quietly.” GIVE CHOICES
that she can return to the table when she is ready to eat her food without playing in it. LOGICAL CONSEQUENCES Consequences that are logically related to the behavior help teach children responsibility. For example, your child breaks a neighbor’s window and you punish him by spanking him. What does he learn about the situation? He may learn to never do that again, but he also learns that he needs to hide his mistakes, blame it on someone else, lie, or simply not get caught. He may decide that he is bad or he feels anger and revenge toward the parent who spanked him. When you spank a child, he may behave because he is afraid to get hit again. However, do you want your child to behave because he is afraid of you or because he respects you?
Giving your child a choice is an effective alternative to spanking. If she is playing with her food at the table, ask, “Would you like to stop playing with your food, or would you like to leave the table?” If the child DO MAKE-UPS continues to play with her food, you When children break use kind but firm action by helping her down from the table. Then tell her agreements, parents tend to want
WITHDRAW FROM CONFLICT
Aggression is an obvious form of perpetuating violence in society. A more subtle form of this is spanking because it takes its toll on a child’s self-esteem, dampening his enthusiasm and causing him to be rebellious and uncooperative. Consider for a moment the vision of a family that knows how to win cooperation and creatively solve their problems without using force or violence. The alternatives are limitless and the results are calmer parents who feel more supported. !

A child’s temper tantrum can easily set a parent off. Children frequently throw tantrums when they feel uninformed or powerless in a situation. Instead of telling your child he has to leave his friend’s house at a moments notice, tell him that you will be leaving in five minutes. This allows the child to complete what he was in the process of doing.

to punish them. An alternative is to have your child do a make-up. A make-up is something that people do to put themselves back into integrity with the person that they broke the agreement with. For example, several boys were at a sleep-over at Larry’s home. His father requested that they not leave the house after midnight. The boys broke their agreement. The father was angry and punished them by telling them that they couldn’t have a sleep-over for two months. Larry and his friends became angry, sullen and uncooperative as the result of the punishment. The father realized what he had done. He apologized for punishing them and told them how betrayed he felt and discussed with the boys the importance of keeping their word. He then asked the boys for a make-up. They decided to cut the lumber that the father needed to have cut in the backyard. The boys became excited and enthusiastic about the project and later kept their word on future sleep-overs.

“Ask Alexa” - 9 Ideas for Families at Home By Brandpoint Content
While Florida’s stay-at-home orders have been lifted and life is resuming (knock on wood) back to somewhat normal, families are still spending more time at home. This is a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time together and make memories in the process. No matter what your household size or the variety of ages that live in your home, there is plenty to do without leaving the house.
Have a dance party Play some tunes and show off your best moves with a family dance party for smiles all around. You can even have a multi-room dance party when you play music across multiple Alexa Devices. Simply use the app to create a Multi-Room Music group and ask to play your favorite music.
interactive games When you’re not sure what to play, ask Alexa. The smart device is your gateway to countless great games like Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, Deal or No Deal, Escape the Room and classics like Pac-Man, The Floor is Lava, Clue, Twister, Simon Says and Mads Libs if you’re feeling nostalgic. Plan a family game night, stock up on favorite snacks and have some fun.
Backwards day Sometimes the opposite can be more fun, so plan a backwards day and do everything in reverse. Young children really enjoy doing activities like wearing sweatshirts backward or eating breakfast for dinner. You can even create a custom routine for backwards day with Alexa - the sillier the better when it comes to backwards day, so don’t worry if things get a little goofy. 6

Music sharing Want to share a song with your family and friends to let them know you’re thinking about them? Alexa can help with that! Sharing music with your loved ones is as easy as saying “Alexa, share this song with Claire.” The person you’ve sent the song to can listen on their Echo device and send back a reaction. What better way to discover new music.
Look at photos Get a little sentimental by spending some time looking at images of your family over the years. While some of this can easily be accessed on your phone, don’t limit yourself. Dust off old photo albums and have fun trying to guess who is who and sharing memories with younger generations. If you have an Echo Show, you can say “Alexa, show my photos” to view your photos.
Try new recipes Extra time at home means extra time for trying new foods and recipes. Whether it’s cookbooks in your home or asking Alexa to show you a new recipe on your Echo Show, have everyone pick out a few they want to try and then plan a day each week to cook them together. Another idea is to choose theme weeks and cook to match your theme.
Movie Night With Echo Show, you can plan a family movie night and stream your favorite movie or TV show from providers like Prime Video, Hulu, NBC and others. Amazon also recently introduced Netflix on Echo Show so you can browse the full Netflix catalog as well as pause, resume and stream movies or TV shows using just your voice. To get started, customers can say,“Alexa, open Netflix” and log into their account.
Cheer on sports Plan a game day and do favorite tailgate activities at home, including favorite food, that lucky outfit and fun decor. Remember, follow your team on the Alexa app and simply say “Alexa, give me my sports update” for the latest scores, upcoming games and more. You can also watch NBA video highlights from your favorite team on your Echo Show device.
READ From making dinner to making time for yourself, Alexa can help you find your next read when you’re looking to unwind. Simply ask,“Alexa, what should I read next?” and get suggestions for your next read based on personalized, top-selling or trending books from over 20 million Audible, Kindle or print titles. !

INNOVATIVE
dental tech
Promoting Enjoyable Dental Experiences By Maribel Santos-Cordero, DMD, Dentistry for Children & Adolescents
Modern dental technology can have a major impact on how well a child responds to dental treatment. Children may feel anxious about their visits to a pediatric dentist, and many times, this anxiety comes from a fear of sights, sounds, and an association of pain with a dentist appointment. Advanced technology may not only address these problems, but helps improve treatment by being more efficient, faster, safer, and less painful than traditional methods. Technology incorporated into dental treatments can help promote better oral health and more enjoyable dental experiences for your child. DIGITAL X-RAY SYSTEM Advanced digital radiograph systems are more ecofriendly as they provide better diagnostic detail, about 90% less radiation exposure compared to traditional radiographs and less exposure of the dental team to harmful developing chemicals. Images can be taken in less than a quarter of a second providing clearer views of the teeth, gums, and any other

surgery time, no need for stitches, minimal bleeding, reduced risk of infection, and less swelling and discomfort.
LASER DENTISTRY There is a variety of dental lasers for a variety of dental procedures. Hard-tissue lasers can be used to remove small cavities. Soft-tissue lasers, like the CO2 LightScalpel®, are used to provide a variety of dental surgeries that otherwise would have to be performed with the use of a scalpel that can bruise or injure the tissue. As a result, there is shorter

THE WAND® ANESTHESIA This computer-assisted anesthesia system is a friendly and more acceptable way to get numb. The anesthesia is delivered a few drops at a time with little to no discomfort. Fear of dental procedures is usually minimal when children are presented with this alternate method. CARI-VU CAVITY DETECTION DEVICE This detection device uses transillumination technology to accurately depict the location of dental cavities and tooth cracks. They are easy to clean, don’t require food restrictions as with traditional braces and usually get the job done in less time with less hassle. Treatment must be designed and directly supervised by a certified dentist to make sure things progress safely and avoid serious dental complications. ZIRCONIA CROWNS AND RESIN COMPOSITE FILLINGS White zirconia crowns and resin composite fillings simulate the look of real teeth making your child’s smile whiter and more esthetic. Nitrous Oxide and IV Sedation are used in pediatric dentistry to allow a safe and comfortable delivery of dental treatment in patients with extreme anxiety and those unable to cope with treatment in a conventional way. Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas” helps reduce a strong gag reflex and keeps the patient calm. The patient remains awake and able to interact with the dentist. On the other hand, IV sedation puts a patient in a state of deep sleep while still able to breathe on their own. In a pediatric dental office, IV sedation is administered by a pediatric anesthesiologist. Pediatric dentists who use the latest technology are always receiving additional training to remain up-todate on new technology to improve treatment options. As dentistry continues to evolve, innovative technology promotes enjoyable dental experiences for long lasting oral health. ! Dr. Maribel Santos-Cordero is a boardcertified pediatric dentist who is always looking to create better, more comfortable, and safer experiences for her patients. As a patient of Dr. Santos, your child can experience compassionate and friendly dental care focused on helping them establish excellent oral health from the very beginning, with the aid of safe and reliable dental technology. SNEAKY HEALTHY Incorporating veggies for picky eaters By Brandpoint Content
10
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
It seems like every family has at least one—a child who is somewhat selective about what they’re willing to eat. As a parent, you may despair about making sure your children are getting enough healthy vegetables in their daily diet. But don’t give up just yet. It is possible to use vegetables in creative ways that even your most critical eater will find hard to resist. Here are just a few ideas to amp up the veggie factor—while also encouraging healthy eating habits. MAKE VEGGIES MORE FUN You probably had “ants on a log” when you were a kid celery stalks filled with peanut butter and dotted with raisin “ants” that kids find irresistible. Sometimes the presentation makes all the difference. These strategies may help kids see their veggies in a new way: Use a fun name for the food! From “ants on a log” to calling zucchini noodles “zoodles,” kids like things that sound funny or pique their imagination. TURN FOOD INTO ART Turn a plate full of differently shaped veggies like carrot curls, strips of bell peppers, sliced pitted olives, cherry tomato halves or broccoli “trees” into faces or landscapes—or let your kids create art with them before they munch. Add tasty dips for kids to sample as they work their way around the plate. MAKE IT EDUCATIONAL Learn about herbivores in the animal world. Talk about what rabbits or guinea pigs eat, or large animals like elephants and huge dinosaurs! Arrange a salad plate fit for a bunny or a triceratops and have at it! SNEAK IN FOODS They’ll never guess! There are plenty of ways to sneak a few more veggies into foods your kids will love. Cauliflower pizza crust. Kids love pizza, and they’ll never know the delicious crust is made from
cauliflower. Newman’s Own Cauliflower Crust Thin and Crispy Pizzas, in Cheese or Margherita varieties, will quickly become family favorites. These great tasting pizzas are made with wholesome ingredients like real cauliflower and 100% whole milk mozzarella, with no added sugar, and the crust is certified gluten-free. Ground meat favorites. Meatballs, hamburgers and meatloaf using ground meat or poultry are easy foods to sneak in some finely grated carrot, zucchini, spinach or kale for a nutrition boost. VEGGIES FOR DESSERT Veggies like carrots and zucchini make yummy breads, muffins or cake. A little sugar, agave or honey in the recipe is all that’s needed to sweeten the deal, turning your vegetables into dessert or breakfast! SMOOTHIE IT UP Use your blender to make tasty concoctions from any number of veggies or fruits. Add yogurt and sweeten with honey until it tastes so good nobody can resist. Or just use bananas for sweetness that makes any smoothie taste better. Kids thrown off by green smoothies? Give it a funny
name (Swamp Shake?) to help it go down more smoothly. INCLUDE THEM Grow vegetables at home, let kids choose some at the farmer’s market or learn how to prepare the veggies together. Children are more interested in eating things when they’ve had an active part in the process. Short on outdoor space? Consider a small indoor herb or veggie garden as a fun family project. Kids too young to handle knives or heat safely? Let younger children wash veggies or shuck corn. DISCOVER TOGETHER Explore vegetables that come in interesting shapes and colors, like eggplant, Romanesco, colorful bell peppers, watermelon radishes or rainbow carrots. Talk about how they grow—above the ground, under the ground or on a vine? See where you can buy veggies that look just as they do as they grow, like corn in husks or Brussels sprouts on stalks. SUMMER camps Things to consider By Tanni Haas, Ph.D.
Choosing the right summer camp for your child can be a daunting task, but summer camp can reap many rewards for both you and your child. Building friendships, developing interests and skills, experiencing new and exciting things and so much more—all of these things are benefits of summer camp.
PICKING THE RIGHT CAMP How does a parent select the right camp for their child? Start with determining the type of camp! Traditional camps that offer a little bit of everything—this could be swimming, soccer, hiking, arts and crafts and more. Academic camps that focus on science, math, or even creative writing. These camps are an excellent way to give your child some extra help in an area he may be weak in during the school year, or you may want to give your child a head start by preparing for the upcoming school year. Adventure camps that are all about outdoor hobbies like rafting, mountaineering, or horse-back riding. 14
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
Performing arts camps that specialize in theatre, music, film, dancing, languages or painting, sketching and sculpture. Sports camps that let children sharpen their skills in tennis, soccer, or baseball. Most of these camps are day camps—that is, camps that your child attends during the day and is home by dinner. These camps are perfect for children as young as 5 right up to teenagers and tend to run for a short duration—usually by the week—and therefore offer your child the opportunity to explore different interests and hobbies. There are also overnight camps that become suitable for children as they reach 9 or 10. While an overnight camp isn’t for everyone, it offers your child the opportunity to pick up really valuable social and life skills and chances to take on new responsibilities. Some kids may experience separation anxiety and homesickness—yet most children seem to adapt in a
matter of a few days given that there are many camp directors skilled in the delicate art of wiping away the tears of first-time overnight campers.
THINGS TO CONSIDER As a parent, you know your child best—their hobbies, interests and comfort level with trying new things. Ask these questions in your quest to finding the right camp: 1. What do you and your child want to gain from camp?
2. What are the special interests that your child wants to explore? 3. Does your child have social anxiety, physical or intellectual limitations that may cause challenges?
As long as that atmosphere is based around acceptance and the positive feedback to promote creativity. Allow your child to live their lives with the passion and memories of their youth. A study of children who grew up learning the arts revealed that “students who chose an arts elective not only had better grades in elementary school than their peers, but also showed stronger social, behavioral, language, motor, and cognitive skills.
4. What kind of emphasis will your
child profit from the most?
Parents also need to keep in mind that the summer camp experience is about their child—and not them. It’s important you don’t force your child to attend a camp that really interests you. You may love art, but your kid may have no interest in becoming the next Picasso. Chances are she’ll have a miserable experience and may resist trying camps in the future.
EXPRESSION THROUGH MUSIC AND ART Thinking about an art camp? Expression is so important for the development of children. The ability to express thoughts, feelings and ideas is fundamental to the exploration of their interests. Arts summer camps help kids perform that visual medium of selfexpression. Performing arts camps allow for that special amount to focus entirely on either singing, dancing, acting or musical instruments. All of which excel at the creation of expression in children. It’s important to act on these as early as possible, as it can be one of the main factors of a healthy adult relationship.
MUSIC CAMPS Music camps come in all shapes and sizes, some focus on classical, some on classic rock, but there is one for everyone. The more your child loves this type of music the more they will want to spend that summer improving their talent. Many arts camps culminate in a full-scale production at the end of the session, allowing family and friends a preview of what they’ve learned. This feeling of accomplishment isn’t limited to performing arts. Many camps that focus on visual art or mixed
EXPLORE NEW HOBBIES media, including painting, pottery or photography, send campers home with one or more finished projects to keep, fulfilling a sense of achievement and completion, as well as a newly found form of self-expression.
PERFORMING ARTS Does your child love to sing or dance? Try a performing arts camp. Allow them to improve their skills by doing exactly what they love. Arts camps allow them to perform in productions, and at the same time infuse themselves into the song or dance. The performance is often looked back on so fondly, and even can shape their interests and inspiration for the future. In case you haven’t caught on yet, learning the arts can do truly remarkable things for your child. Plus, the arts are ideal right now because they are versatile. They may be taught in-person or through virtual art summer camp classes.
SELF CONFIDENCE THROUGH THE ARTS Involvement in the arts, like ones focusing on sports can be a great place for the improvement of self-confidence.
As we know, not all kids will find their arts passion immediately. The exploration of several may be needed. Most children will find they will excel at specific things and enjoy using those tools to grow. Arts summer camps also provide the opportunity for both specific and general art instruction, so children can focus on one medium or explore multiple types of artistic endeavors. One in six young children experience symptoms of anxiety or depression. Children in art summer camps indirectly learn how to manage these symptoms from a young age. The summer months provide an exciting time for kids to develop new interests, explore their environments, work on refining special skills, make new friends or build on existing friendships. SLEEPAWAY camps Questions to ask a Sleepaway Camp Director By Tanni Haas, Ph.D.
You’ve gone online, asked everyone you know for recommendations, and otherwise searched for sleepaway camps for your kids. How do you find the one that’s just right for them? When you’ve narrowed down the options to a handful or less, it’s time to speak to the camp directors by phone or email. Below is a list of some of the most important questions to ask.
THE CAMP Is the camp accredited, how old is it, and how long have you owned or managed it? It’s a good sign if the camp is licensed by the American Camp Association (ACA). To earn accreditation, a camp must satisfy 300 industry standards for health, safety and program quality. Every three years, the ACA visits the camp to verify that it’s in compliance. It’s also a good sign if the camp has been in existence for many years (kids are coming back year after year), and if the director is experienced at running camps. WHAT’S YOUR PHILOSOPHY? Camps can be very different. Some camps, especially ones focused on specific sports, can be quite competitive. Other camps are more aimed at instilling in kids certain values, like
28
GULFCOAST FAMILY LIVING
comradery, cooperation, and conflictresolution. Make sure that the camp’s philosophy matches your own values and that it’s a good fit for your kids.
ACCOMMODATIONS Ask whether the kids sleep in cabins or tents, whether there are bathrooms and showers nearby and, most importantly, whether your kids can request to room with friends from home. Whether your kids are firsttime or seasoned campers, it’s always comforting and great fun to room with one or more of their regular friends. COST & FEES You probably don’t need any reminders to ask about the camp fee. But don’t forget to ask whether that fee is all-inclusive, or whether there are additional
costs for day or overnight trips, transportation to and from camp, special activities, etc. Also ask if there’s a refund policy should your kids get sick, what the deadline is for registration and, in case you missed the deadline, if there’s a waitlist. It’s also a good idea to ask if financial aid or needs-based scholarships are available, perhaps a sibling discount, whether you need to pay everything up front or can pay in installments.
THE PROGRAM How long are the sessions, can they be lengthened or shortened, and how long do most campers stay? Most camps offer sessions of a specific length, often two, four, or eight weeks. However, if you have other things planned for the summer, it can be useful to either shorten or lengthen a session to fit your schedule. Most kids like to stay as long as the other kids: assuming they’re having a great time, no kid wants to the one getting picked up before everyone else. TYPICAL DAY? Try to get a sense of what your kids will be doing on a typical day, including how much time is devoted to indoor and outdoor activities, and what they’ll be doing in the evening. This’ll help you decide whether it’s the right camp for them. COMMUNICATION & VISITING It’s always a good idea to find out how the camp prefers that you communicate with your kids. By
phone or email? How often? Also ask about care packages and whether there are designated visiting days.
HOW DO YOU ACCOMMODATE SPECIAL NEEDS? A high-quality camp is one where all the campers’ different needs are met. Ask how the staff accommodates special needs with respect to activities, behavior, learning, and dietary restrictions. THE STAFF How do you hire, train, and supervise your camp counselors, and what’s the counselor-camper ratio? One of the best signs that the camp is of a high-quality is that it has strict procedures for hiring, training, and supervision of camp counselors. This includes criminal background checks, first aid training, and regular feedback sessions. It’s also a good sign if most of the counselors return for several summers. The ACA recommends that the counselor-camper ratio should be relatively low (between 1:6 and 1:12). MEDICAL A high-quality camp will either have a licensed physician or nurse on the premises, a well-stocked supply of commonly-used medications, and procedures in place
for dispensing medication to all the kids who need them. Also ask how far away is the closest hospital, doctor’s office and dental clinic and how the kids will get there, if needed.
THE CAMPERS How many campers do you have, and how many of them return every year? Generally speaking, the larger the camp the more activities, and the smaller the camp the more intimate it feels. Likewise, the higher the return rate, the more satisfied the kids are with the whole camp experience. How can your kids stay in touch with their counselors after camp has ended? Kids often develop strong bonds with their counselors. Ask whether they’re encouraged to stay in touch after the camp has ended (who knows, your kids’ favorite counselor could end up being their babysitter). Some camps also host events throughout the year for counselors and campers. It’s a great way to keep in touch until next year’s camp. !

BACKYARD
attractions Local activities to explore this summer By Henry Winkle
What a year… As this pandemic reaches its first birthday we begin to see life in Florida return to a somewhat normal state. A lot of kids are back in school, offices are reopening and maybe life as we know it isn’t so hard anymore. So, as we begin to spread our wings, let’s remember to have some family fun! GARDENS Looking to immerse your family in a magical setting? Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is the place to be! This popular spot boasts its very own Children’s Rainforest Garden; a spot for kids to unwind from the tedium of classes and gain a sense of adventure as they explore its huts, paths and 30

even waterfalls. Stop by the kids’ corner for a quick scavenger hunt, or crafts session. A real tried and true family fun experience. ANIMALS Want something more exotic? Try a hike to the top of the Celery Fields, once up there stop and listen for a moment, you may hear something very exotic just next door. Finish your hike around the one and only hill in Sarasota and join the line at the Big Cat Habitat. There you’ll find your next adventure, as there are some of the most beautiful animals in the world.
You’ll first be greeted by some of the largest bears you have ever seen. Keep on walking and you may even spot the extremely rare Florida Panther. Watch all the napping cats enjoy their day in the sun and don’t forget to enjoy the afternoon show. COOL OFF Not too far from there you may need to cool off a little. Just a short drive away you’ll find a true hidden gem called Sun N Fun. A massive RV
marketplace
DINING When you start to get hungry, the next place on the list is a personal family favorite; “Man v. Food” even had to stop here to try their goliath hot dog. The Old Salty Dog has been a local favorite for decades. Sit down and enjoy some conch fritters with the family while enjoying the Florida lifestyle. Just across the street you’ll find the famous Mote Marine, and see some of Florida’s aquatic wildlife.

HISTORY If you’re a history buff, then you have to visit Spanish Point. See a natural Florida and learn about all of its agriculture and iconic history. Spend the day wandering the trails and exploring the beauty. The best part is the ability to see the shell middens, mounds of seashells that local tribes created over the span of 500 years. Each shells inhabitant was eaten and then thrown onto where it lays now, well over a thousand years later. Ask Spanish Point about their summer camp programs, it makes a fun and educational program for your kids.
