Remembering Three Great Florida-breds at Saratoga

W

ith Saratoga Race Course in full swing, it is enjoyable recalling some of the best performances by Florida-breds at the Spa—with one of the more memorable coming as recent as the 2019 Vanderbilt Handicap (Grade 1). Last year, Imperial Hint, the diminutive Florida-bred sprinter known as “The Little Rocket,” shattered a 47-yearold track record at Saratoga while winning the Vanderbilt for the second consecutive year. Imperial Hint was impressive in winning the 2018 version of the Vanderbilt with a three-and-three-quarters-length victory but the best was yet to come the following year. He rolled to an even more remarkable Vanderbilt execution last year with a four-length victory ahead Diamond Oops and eventual champion sprinter Mitole while stopping the clock after six furlongs in a stunning 1:07.92 on the fast track. The time broke a longstanding mark of 1:08 flat set in 1972 by Spanish Riddle (when races times were measured to a fifth-of-a-second). Speightstown was also credited with the record after winning the 2004 Vanderbilt Handicap in 1:08.04. XBTV’s award winning analyst and eclipse award winning ex-jockey Richard Migliore tweeted that it was a top 10 all-time performance. David Aragona of Daily Racing Form and the morning line maker for the New York Racing Association tweeted: “Imperial Hint just put forth one of the greatest sprinting performances I’ve ever seen.” Another favorite recollection for Florida thoroughbred enthusiasts came in 1994 with the 125th running of the Grade 1 Travers. Florida-bred Holy Bull, the 4-5 favorite, and 8-5 second choice Comanche Trail, sprinted through a blazing half-mile in :46.85 that spent the latter while Holy Bull and jockey Mike Smith finished six furlongs in 1:10.43 and with a clear and apparently comfortable four-length lead. Holy Bull raced around the turn four lengths clear of Unaccounted For in second but Concern and Jerry Bailey, who were as many as 15 lengths off the pace earlier, were beginning to launch their attack from far back in the field of five. At the top of the stretch, Holy Bull was still three lengths clear before track announcer Tom Durkin said:

6 THE FLORIDA HORSE • AUGUST 2020

“there was cause for concern,” as Concern was now second and in full flight on the outside. But Holy Bull dug in and fought off Concern’s challenge through the stretch while keeping a length in front until the final 50 yards when Concern made one more surge to finish just a neck short of Holy Bull, who would later be voted as the Horse of the Year, joining Floridabred Roman Brother, Dr. Fager and Affirmed as Floridabreds with the luxurious title. The 1977 Hopeful Stakes (G1) provided the first rubbermatch between Affirmed and Alydar, considered by many to be the greatest rivalry in thoroughbred racing history. Affirmed had won the Youthful Stakes at Belmont Park in his second career start while Alydar was fifth that day in his career debut. Alydar avenged the loss in the Great American Stakes at Belmont when he bested Affirmed by four lengths so they each had a victory against the other going into the Hopeful, which was by then, the sixth career start for both. Affirmed was third behind pacesetter Tilt Up early in the six-and-a-half furlong Hopeful while Alydar raced in fifth a few lengths farther back. But the two stars hooked up at the top of the stretch with Tilt Up still right there on the rail. As the trio raced into the final furlong, Affirmed took over from between horses while Alydar chased on the outside and they raced under the wire in the same order with Affirmed less than a length better. There have certainly been many other memorable moments at Saratoga by Florida-bred stars. Dr. Fager ran so fast in the 1968 Whitney that the television cameraman lost track of him and followed the second and third-place horses under the finish. Other Floridians with a Whitney victory to their credit include Carry Back (1961), Tri Jet (1974), Island Whirl (1983), Sultry Song (1992) and Victory Gallop (1999). Beautiful Pleasure won the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes twice in 1999-2000 joining Coup de Fusil (1965) and preceding Ginger Punch (2018) and Sheer Drama (2015) as Florida-bred winners of the track’s marquee filly and mare event. So here’s to another meeting at Saratoga—albeit from afar due to COVID-19 keeping fans from the track—and the next Florida-bred to make it into the annals of The Spa. ■

Florida FOCUS Network Effect Finally Finds Stakes Win in Big Drama

Florida-bred Network Effect

8 THE FLORIDA HORSE • AUGUST 2020

LAUREN KING PHOTO

A two-time graded stakes-runner-up as a 2year-old and a winner of one of only two starts as a sophomore last year, Florida-bred Network Effect returned to the winner’s circle after win-

by Brock Sheridan ning his first black type event in the $100,000 Big Drama Stakes May 2 at Gulfstream Park. Second in the Grade 3 Nashua Stakes to Vekoma at Aqueduct in November of 2018 and second to Maximus Mischief in the Grade 2 Remson, also at Aqueduct, Network Effect won a first-level allowance race at Aqueduct in November in his first start of last year. He was then off the board in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct in December before finishing second to Wind of Change March 28 at Gulfstream in his first and only other start of this year in a second level, $62,000 optional claiming event. But the Chad Brown trainee put it all together with a two length win over six fellow Florida-breds, 3-years-old and older, in the seven furlong Big Drama.

Royal Squeeze, who was 13-1 at post time of the Big Drama, led at the first two points of call while finishing a quarter-mile in :22.98 and the half-mile in :45.77 on the fast main track. Network Effect and He Hate Me chased in a joint second. Noble Drama made a big run from last to take over on the turn and had a half-length on Network Effect when they hit the quarterpole at the top of the stretch. But Network Effect and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. found room on the rail in deep stretch to pass Noble Drama to win in a time of 1:21.79 and two lengths clear of that rival in second. Noble Drama was two-and-a-half lengths ahead of Last Judgment in third followed by Royal Squeeze, Red Crescent, He

Lady’s Island Adds Musical Romance to Sprint Stakes Resume Last year in Gulfstream Park’s Musical Romance Stakes, Averill Racing LLC and Matties Racing Stable LLC’s Lady’s Island finished second, beaten more than 10 lengths by Stormy Embrace. But the 6-year-old mare has been on a tear since winning eight of nine races including the May 16 renewal of the Musical Romance, a seven furlong stakes for Floridabred fillies and mares. Lady’s Island was among nine who went to the post to vie for the $100,000 purse. Despite the impressive credentials and coming into the Musical Romance winning her last two including a high level starter optional claiming race on April 19 and the $50,000 Minaret Stakes on Feb. 15, both at Tampa Bay Downs, Lady’s Island went to the post as the 7-2 second choice. Among those with some concerns about

Florida-bred Lady’s Island

Lady’s Island chances in the Musical Romance were trainer Georgina Baxter. “We were worried. Seven furlongs, we thought she might be vulnerable,” Baxter said. “We’re very happy. She’s improved and improved. It’s been a progression.” Liza Star got the first jumps from the gate in this year’s Musical Romance, but it wasn’t long before jockey Emisael Jaramillo had Lady’s Island on a clear lead before they hit the main track. Lady’s Island had two lengths on Liza Star and Two Sixty after a quick quarter-mile in :22.17 and seemingly galloped to a half-mile fraction in :44.24 while extending her lead to four lengths turning for home. Even money favorite Wildwood’s Beauty made a big run from mid-pack to clearly take second, but never got close to Lady’s Island, who won by three-and-three-quarter’s lengths in 1:22.86 on the fast track. Wildwood’s Beauty kept second while a length-and-a-quarter ahead of Ballera in third. They were followed in order by Starship Bonita, Liza Star, J P’s Delight, Oceans of Love, Picara and Two Sixty. “She looked settled; she looked happy. Around the bend she pulled away, which is her normal move,” Baxter said. “She’s bigger and stronger. She’s double the size of any horse in this field. She’s a monster and physically a monster.” Lady’s Island now adds the Musical Romance score to her list of wins in the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl Stakes at Gulfstream in Decem-

ber; and in the $75,000 Nicole’s Dream Stakes and $75,000 Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint at Gulfstream last June. Her only loss in nine starts since the 2019 Musical Romance came when second to sprint dynamo Extravagant Kid in the $100,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint on Jan. 18. Lady’s Island is a daughter of Solera Farm stallion Greatness out of Broadway Martha, by Broad Brush and she was bred in Florida by Bailey Bolen of Wadmalaw Island, S.C. She has won 16 of 30 career starts and has earnings of $504,935. She paid $8.80 to win. ■

Florida-bred Champion Imperial Hint Retired Imperial Hint, the 2018 Florida-bred Horse of the Year, champion sprinter and champion older horse as recognized by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association, has been retired from racing. Trained by Danny Carvajal Jr. for Raymond Mamone and bred in Florida by Bert and Martha Pilcher’s Shade Tree Thoroughbreds, Imperial Hint completes a racing career that included 14 wins from 25 starts with earnings of $2,209,055. He won the Grade 1 Vanderbilt Handicap and the Grade 1 Vosburgh Stakes in both 2018 and 2019, the 2018 Grade 2 True North Stakes, 2017 Grade 3 Smile Stakes, 2017 Grade 3 Gen-

Hate Me and Garter and Tie. “He was perfect. He helped me today from the gate. It’s the first time I rode him and he broke so good for me. He broke on top and I just put my hands down and let him relax and he relaxed so well for me. I just kept him there and waited for the moment to go,” Ortiz said. “I had nowhere to go by the three-eighths pole, but I said to myself, ‘Let me just ride him with patience and if something opens, I know he’s going to get there.’ I had so much horse. Network Effect is by Mark Valeski out of Sandy Key Gal, by Put It Back and he was bred in Florida by Louis Jolin. He races in the red and white silks of Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stables Inc., who purchased him for $95,000 at the 2018 Ocala Breeders’ Sales April Sale where he was consigned by Blue River Bloodstock. He has now earned $252,910 while winning three of seven starts and paid $3.20 Saturday as the 3-5 favorite. “I think he’s a nice horse. They gave him some time and he came back good,” Ortiz said. “I think he’s a real horse.” ■

Kelsey’s Cross Becomes Stakes Winner in Ginger Punch Given a short freshening after competing in five consecutive graded-stakes dating back to last fall, Kelsey’s Cross got some class relief and rallied to secure her elusive first career stakes victory in the $100,000 Ginger Punch Stakes at Gulfstream Park on June 6. The Ginger Punch, for fillies and mares, was the second of two mile-and-one-sixteenth turf stakes on the program restricted to Florida-breds, 3-years-old and older. They were preceded by the $100,000 Soldier’s Dancer, which was won by Florida-bred Muggsamatic. (see adjoining story) Ridden by Luca Panici for trainer Patrick Biancone, who co-owns the 4-year-old filly with Sanford Bancon, Kelsey’s Cross completed the distance in 1:42.94 over a turf course rated good as the 5-2 second choice in a field of 11. Kelsey’s Cross was last seen finishing ninth in the Orchid Stakes (Grade 3) March 28 at Gulfstream, three weeks after her thirdplace effort in the Hillsborough Stakes (G2) at Tampa. Also third in the Wonder Again 10 THE FLORIDA HORSE • AUGUST 2020

Florida-bred Kelsey’s Cross

Stakes (G3), Martha Washington Stakes and Saratoga Oaks last summer, she had been training steadily for her comeback at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream’s satellite training facility in Palm Beach County. “It’s awesome,” Biancone’s daughter and assistant, Andie Biancone, said. “We gave her a little bit of a break. We just eased up on her training for a while and she’s really developed from that and grown. We’re thrilled to have her back and ready for a good summer.” Kelsey’s Cross had not raced shorter than a mile-and-an-eighth since her last win, a onemile open allowance triumph over her elders last September at Gulfstream which launched her back in against graded competition. Panici settled along the rail in eighth as Crown and Sugar was intent on the lead from her outside post, setting fractions of :24.82 and :49.01 seconds tracked by 30-1 long shots Raki and Picara. They remained unhurried through the backstretch before tipping outside on the turn after Crown and Sugar ran six furlongs in 1:13.04, when Panici set Kelsey’s Cross down for a drive through the lane to reel in Crown and Sugar late and draw clear by two-and-a-half-lengths. Kelsey’s Cross paid $7.80 to win. Crown and Sugar stayed up for second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Picara, followed by stakes-winner Midnight Soiree, who ran second in last year’s Ginger Punch. Bellera, a Grade 3 winner on dirt trying turf for the first time, finished seventh. “It was pretty easy, because she’s such a class filly. I just saved ground the first part and by the three-eighths pole I could move the best way for her,” Panici said. “She gave me

a lot of help. I do everything easy because she has so much class. She’s so nice. She finished up good. It was perfect.” Though he had never ridden Kelsey’s Cross in a race, Panici has become familiar with the Florida-bred daughter of Anthony’s Cross in the morning. Biancone said their chemistry proved to be a winning combination. “I was worried because it’s a small track and she’s so big,” she said. “Sometimes she struggles on that small track, but I think Luca just rode her perfect and set her up real nice. He’s worked her a bunch so he knows her, and it just worked out real well.” The Ginger Punch honors Stronach Stables’ Florida homebred who won 12 of 22 starts and more than $3 million in purses from 2006-08 and was named the champion older mare of 2007. Nine of her wins came in stakes, eight of them graded, including the Go for Wand (G1), Ruffian (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) in 2007 and Ogden Phipps (G1), Go for Wand and Personal Ensign (G1) in 2008. She raced three times at Gulfstream, kicking off her final season with a victory in the Sunshine Millions Distaff. Kelsey’s Cross is out of Amy’s Allie, by Trippi and she was bred by T. Wynn Jolley and Mary Jolley. She earned $58,100 in winning the Ginger Punch and pushed her career revenue to $263,068. She has now won three of 12 career starts. ■

In the 2019 Vanderbilt, Imperial Hint set the track record for six furlongs at Saratoga while stopping the timer in 1:07.92, eclipsing the 1:08 time set by Spanish Rider in 1972 (before races were timed in hundredths of a second), and equaled by Speightstown’s 1:08.04 in the 2004 Vanderbilt. He was also second to Roy H in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), third again to winner Roy H in the 2018 version of the Sprint and was a late scratch before the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Sprint. He was an Eclipse Award finalist in the Sprint category in 2017-19 but was never honored with the title. According to several reports, Carvajal is speaking with officials at several stallion stations throughout North America regarding a stallion career. ■

tiple stakes-placed mare Brown Eyed Woman, by de Niro and was bred in Florida by Gilbert G. Campbell. Soldier’s Dancer was a Florida-bred son of Lost Soldier that won 12 of 33 starts and banked more than $1.5 million from 200610. Up in Smoke Rebounds in Game Face Stakes Black Type Thoroughbreds and R.A. Hill Stable’s Up in Smoke rebounded from her first career loss at Gulfstream Park, closing with a rush to upset favored Boerne in the $75,000 Game Face Stakes on June 6. A distant fourth in the mile-and-one-sixteenth Hollywood Wildcat in her first start around two turns, Up in Smoke returned to winning form in the six-and-a-half-furlong stakes for 3-year-old fillies. The 3-year-old daughter of Ocala Stud stallion The Big Beast had won the first three starts of her career at sprint distances before making her stakes debut in the Hollywood Wildcat, in which she finished fourth, more than 10 lengths behind winner and Kentucky Oaks (G1) prospect Tonalist’s Shape. In the Game Face, the George Weavertrained filly settled well off the early pace under Emisael Jaramillo as even-money favorite Boerne set pressured fractions of :22.60 for the first quarter-mile and :45.20 for the first half-mile. dier’s Dancer at Gulfstream Park, scoring in his first start for trainer Michael Maker. The 6-year-old gelded son of Any Given Saturday prevailed by a length over multiple stakes-winner Galleon Mast in his Spring/Summer Meet debut after capturing the $121,000 Claiming Crown Emerald Stakes and finishing second in both the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Turf to March to the Arch and then to Aquaphobia in the $60,000 Old Man Elegant Stakes during the 2019-2020 Championship Meet. “He’s a very nice horse. He’s one of my favorites since he came in. He’s been a beautiful horse and has done everything right,” said Nolan Ramsey, Maker’s assistant trainer at Gulfstream. “He makes my job easy. Horses like him make it fun.” Muggsamatic settled well off the early pace under Edgard Zayas in the mile-andone-sixteenth turf race for Florida-bred 3year-olds and older, as Wild Medagliad’oro set fractions of :24.07 for the first quarter and :48.28 seconds for the first half-mile while pressed by Class and Cash. Wild Medagliad’oro continued to show the way into the stretch but was met with a three-wide challenge by Galleon Mast as Zayas found a seam between horses to mount a wider stretch bid. Galleon Mast’s stretch drive stalled a bit inside the sixteenth pole and Muggsamatic took full advantage, surging late to win geared down in 1:41.63. “It was a tough race today, and he proved that he belongs,” said Ramsey, who visited the winner’s circle on crutches due to a broken left leg, courtesy of an overly rambunctious 2-year-old. Galleon Mast, who was ridden by Paco Lopez, finished a length ahead of third-place finisher Wild Medagliad’oro and jockey Miguel Vasquez. Kroy, the 2-1 favorite ridden by Emisael Jaramillo, raced evenly to finish fourth, another three-quarters of a length back. Muggsamatic earned $61,380, pushing his bankroll to over $392,000. He has now won 10 of 27 starts and he paid $7.40 to win. The 6-year-old gelding is out of the mul-

lengths, showed the way into the stretch but failed to draw off as she had done during her three-race streak and was no match for Up in Smoke’s powerful outside stretch surge. Up in Smoke ran six-and-a-half furlongs in 1:16.22 while prevailing over Boerne and jockey Edgard Zayas by two lengths. Addilyn finished third, a length-and-a-quarter farther back. Up in Smoke paid $10 to win. Up in Smoke is out of Therese, by Exchange Rate and was bred in Florida by John D. Rio and Carole A. Rio. Up in Smoke was sold from the Caballo Grande consignment as a yearling at the 2018 Ocala Breeders’ Sales October Sale where she brought $45,000 on a final bid from Owls Equine. She was then pin-hooked back to the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale where Black Type Thoroughbreds bought her for $230,000 from Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables consignment. Collusion Illusion May Be Derby Bound After Barrera Win In winning the Grade 3 Lazaro Barrera Stakes at Santa Anita June 20, Collusion Illusion did not earn any points toward running in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve, this year to be run on Sept. 5, but the Florida-bred colt may still be headed that way regardless. “[The Kentucky Derby] is on our radar” trainer Mark Glatt said after Collusion Illusion won the $100,000 Laz Barrera by three-and-aquarter lengths over Ragtime Blues in second. “We paid the late supplement [$3,000]. I don’t know what’s next. I just wanted to get by today. We’ll need to stretch him out and figure out how to get enough points.” Although Collusion Illusion is a multiple graded stakes winner having also taken the Grade 2 Best Pal at Del Mar in August, the bay colt does not have any points on the Derby leaderboard. Last year it took 40 points to obtain a starting position in the Run for the Roses but it will

Collusion Illusion drifted out a bit at the top of the stretch but was able to get by Ragtime Blues past the sixteenth pole and finish 1:16.03 on the fast track. “Around the [far] turn I was inside and he was taking the dirt not quite well. Mike Smith [on Ragtime Blues] opened up a little at the turn, so I wasn’t super confident. But I knew as soon as we turned for home, if we switched leads he would give me a good kick. “As of right now he’s running well short but he probably could go longer.” Ragtime Blues was second, three-and-aquarter lengths clear of Howbelt in third followed by Phantom Boss and Alcools. Collusion Illusion went to the post as the odds-on favorite at 2-5 and paid $2.80 to win.

It was the second consecutive victory for Collusion Illusion as he had won a second tier, $62,500 optional claiming race in his previous start on May 25 at Santa Anita. The optional claiming victory was his first start in eight months after he had been pulled up in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes won by Eight Rings at Santa Anita on Sept. 27. After defeating special weight maidens in his first career start at Del Mar on July 21, Collusion Illusion took the six furlong Best Pal Stakes by a length-and-a-quarter in August before going in the American Pharoah Stakes. He has now won four of five career starts with earnings of $248,751 for owners Dan Agnew, Rodney Orr, Jerry Schneider & John Xitco. Collusion Illusion was bred in Florida by Donald R. Dizney and is by Twirling Candy out of the First Dude mare Natalie Grace, a half-sister to graded stakes-winners Bahamian Squall and Apriority. Both First Dude and Bahamian Squall currently stand at Dizney’s Double Diamond Farm in Ocala. Glatt purchased Collusion Illusion as a 2-year-old for $300,000 at the 2019 Ocala Breeders’ Sales April Sales where he was consigned by Mayberry Farm. He also went through the ring as a yearling at Keeneland September where Lane’s End consigned him for $50,000 to Don’t Tell My Wife Stables. ■

likely take considerably more points to qualify this year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kentucky Derby will be run four months later than normal with additional qualifying races added when racing resumed after the pandemic shutdown. Collusion Illusion showed that he may be a benefactor of the later Derby date as he dominated a field of four other 3-year-olds in the six-and-a-half furlong Barrera. Recent optional claiming race-winner Ragtime Blues showed the way in the Barrera as the Bob Baffert trainee went the first quarter-mile in a quick :21.90 while racing a length ahead of Collusion Illusion and Phantom Boss in a joint second. They turned for home after a half-mile in :44.73 when Flavien Prat tipped Collusion Illusion to the outside to challenge Ragtime Blues as Phantom Boss could not keep up.

Fire in the North Mr Amore Stable’s Firenze Fire lived up to his billing as the even-money favorite in the six-and-a-half furlong True North Stakes (Grade 2) at Belmont Park June 27 as the Florida-bred millionaire won by a length-anda-half in a snappy 1:15.53 on the fast track. The impressive victory over five other rivals, 4-years-old and older, in the $150,000 True North, was the first in two starts for Firenze Fire under the training of Kelly Breen and a bit of redemption for both. In his debut from the Breen barn on June 6, Firenze Fire finished fourth, more than 12 lengths behind winner Vekoma in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap at Belmont. That form had been quite the departure from what he had shown in winning the last three starts under his previous trainer—all stakes and the last of which was a four-length romp in the Grade 3 General George at Laurel Park on Feb. 15. “For sure, he needed that last race,” Breen said of the Carter disappointment. “I think the track had something to do with it last time out. He ran fast. He’s run fast races before. He’s a nice horse. When things click like that, it doesn’t get much better than that.” Firenze Fire broke sharply from the outside post six in the True North as Yorkton, who had also been beaten by Vekoma two starts back when second in the $75,000 Sir Shackleton Stakes at Gulfstream in March, took the early lead from post five. Longshot Stan the Man sat second on the outside with Stymie StakesTHE FLORIDA HORSE • AUGUST 2020 13

Florida FOCUS winner Diamond King moving into contention on the rail as jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. had Firenze Fire in a comfortable fourth on the far outside, about two-and-a-half lengths off the lead. Yorkton set fractions of :22.84 for the first quarter-mile and led around the turn to finish the half-mile in :45.85 with Stan the Man

Firenze Fire is by Poseidon’s Warrior out of My Every Wish, by Langfuhr and Breen said the Breeders’ Cup [likely the Grade 1 Sprint] at Keeneland on Nov. 6-7 is the goal for Firenze Fire. “Hopefully, we can move onward to Saratoga and find a nice spot for him there. The goal is to get him to the Breeders’ Cup,” Breen said. ■

joining him from the outside as they turned for home. But it wasn’t long before Firenze Fire accelerated to the lead past the eighthpole and won with ease ahead of Stan the Man in second with Yorkton another threeand-a-quarter lengths farther back in third. Wicked Trick, Diamond King and Midnightcharly completed the order of finish. “He did everything right. We broke and got into a good position and I was just waiting,” said Ortiz Jr., who scored his fourth victory on Saturday’s program aboard Firenze Fire. “Turning for home, I asked him and he responded really well. We were close to the pace, but I just held him together. I didn’t want to be fighting, so I just tried to let him relax and he really responded when I asked.” Firenze Fire paid $4.20 to win and earned $82,500 for Ron Lomardi’s Mr Amore Stable located in Mountain Lakes, N.J. The 5-yearold bay horse has now won 11 of 26 career starts and nears the $2 million mark in earnings with $1,939,250 to his credit. Firenze Fire, who has won at seven different tracks in his career, has an evident fondness for the Big Sandy, however. He has four wins from seven starts at Belmont Park including a nine-length romp in the 2018 Dwyer Stakes (G3), a half-length victory in the 2017 Champagne Stakes (G1) and a nearly fivelength tally in the 2019 Runhappy Stakes. 14 THE FLORIDA HORSE • AUGUST 2020

Florida-bred Anyportinastorm came out on top of a three-horse battle early in the $50,000added Oak Tree Sprint to win the six furlong event while drawing away to a two-and-a-halflength victory on July 4 at Alameda County Fair Grounds in Pleasanton, Ca. Anyportinastorm broke from the outside post in the four-horse Oak Tree Sprint and found himself in an early fight for the lead with 7-2 second choice Touched by Autism and Honeymoonz Over through swift fractions of :21.78 for the first quarter-mile and :44.14 for the half. But the son of City Zip drew off in the stretch with jockey Kevin Orozco aboard and won his second start of 2020 after finishing second to Mike’s Tiznow in the $61,000 Albany Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on June 6 going five furlongs on the turf. A versatile 6-year-old dark bay or brown horse trained by Blaine Wright, Anyportinastorm resumed the form that saw him win three stakes last year including the $75,000 Lost in the Fog Stakes at six furlongs on Tapeta at

Golden Gate on April 27, the $50,000 Governors Stakes going six furlongs on the main track at Emerald Downs on June 2, and the sixand-a-half furlong $50,000 Budweiser Stakes at Emerald on June 30. He completed the year with finishing second, just a head short of winner Law Abidin Citizen in the Grade 3 Longacres Mile at Emerald on Aug. 11. Anyportinastorm is out of La Defense, by Wild Again and was bred in Florida by Sally J. Andersen. He has won eight of 16 career starts while earning $313,025 for owner Peter Redekop B.C. Ltd. In addition to his stakes victories on the west coast, Anyportinastorm also won the 2018 Zia Park Sprint at Zia Park in New Mexico. Anyportinastorm returned $2.20 as the 110 favorite. Anyportinastorm was a $70,000 RNA as a yearling at Keeneland September for Richard Kent’s Kaizen Sales consignment but garnered a $320,000 final bid from Alistar Roden Bloodstock at the 2016 Ocala Breeders’ Sales April Sale where he was consigned by de Meric Sales. ■

Pay Any Price Back on His Game With Bob Umphrey Score At age 10, Pay Any Price was beginning to show signs that his age may have caught up with him. In his last two starts, the Floridabred gelding had been eased in the $93,000 Turf Dash Stakes won by Faction Cat at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 22 and was third against optional claimers at Gulfstream Park on May 23. But the Georgina Baxter trainee was back to his old self July 4 at Gulfstream when he won the $75,000 Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint by a head over the late running filly Ambassador Luna in second. “This horse is amazing, isn’t he?” Baxter asked following the victory. “I know his last two runs were questionable but you can never write this horse off. You have to respect him every time he steps on the racetrack. “He’s special to me. He’s special to everyone in the barn. He’s 10-years-old. His worst enemy is his attitude, but he’s turned into our

best friend—the fact that he is so goofy and quirky. He’s still so good and so fast and still running well at 10.” Pay Any Price, who holds the world record for five furlongs on the turf set at Gulfstream in March of 2017 when he won the Silks Run Stakes in :53.61, again showed his quickness from the start in the Bob Umphrey. In the Bob Umphrey, the field of five 3year-olds and older all broke from the starting gate together before Pay Any Price shot to the front from post four after a few strides. Pay Any Price and jockey Edgard Zayas raced through the first quarter-mile in a swift :21.84 while a length-and-a-half in front of Ambassador Luna in second with Krsto Skye a half-length back in third. Pay Any Price continued to show the way around the turn but was surrounded by Ambassador Luna on the outside and Krsto Skye on the rail when they turned for home. Ambassador Luna began to lug in in the final furlong and finished just short of Pay Any Price as they finished in :56.08 on the good turf course. Krsto Skye was third, threequarters-of-a-length in front of Sovereign Warrior in fourth. Frosted Grace was last. Pay Any Price continues to win more than half of his races as the Bob Umphrey victory was number 19 from 33 starts. The $46,500 first-place check for owners Matties Racing Stable LLC and Averill Racing LLC pushed him to $718,443 in lifetime earnings. Pay Any Price paid $3.40 to win as the 35 favorite. He is by Wildcat Heir out of One to Five, by Naevus and was bred in Florida by Brent and Crystal Fernung. ■

Jean Elizabeth earned her eighth consecutive stakes victory as she dominated her rivals in the $125,000 Whimsical Stakes (Grade 3) on the first summer Sunday of the Woodbine meet. The popular shipper returned to the scene of her Sweet Briar Too Stakes and Grade 3 Ontario Fashion Stakes wins that launched her current streak last fall for trainer Larry Rivelli and coowners Richard Ravin and Patricia’s Hope LLC. Leaving from inside of her nine foes in the six-furlong sprint for older fillies and mares, Jean Elizabeth darted out for a quick threelength lead en route to victory in 1:09.86. Summer Sunday, Canada’s reigning champion female sprinter, chased the winner most of the way and finished third as Painting closed late to steal the runner-up honours. Jean Elizabeth, who set a stakes record last time out in February’s Lightning City at Tampa Bay Downs and is targeting the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1), paid $3.40 to win. The 5-year-old homebred daughter of Ocala Stud stallion Adios Charlie and Rooney Doodle, by Lit de Justice now boasts a career record reading 15 wins from 21 starts and more than $680,000 in purse earnings. — Woodbine Press Office

Castellano said the pace of the race set up very nicely for Speech. “I just wanted to keep track of the right time, the right place to win the race,” Castellano said. “Today it was easier to keep track of the speed. That eclipsed the track record of 1:41.36 set by Seeking the Soul in an Oct. 21, 2017 optional claiming race. “Very happy,” McCarthy said. “We had our mind set on running in the [Grade 3] Beaumont Stakes [July 10 at Keeneland] for the last five weeks or so and the last minute, we kind of called an audible and sometimes these things work out. To come back today and think we would set a track record in a race we weren’t especially pointing to says something about Speech. She trained well. She shows up every time. I call her the ultimate overachiever.” It was the first stakes victory at Keeneland for McCarthy.

It all came together. “I’ve never had many mares so having a Grade 1winner is really special,” Rice continued. Rice also noted that Speech had shown she was a standout from a very young age.

“Her mother is quite demanding–a type A kind of mare,” Rice said. “And [Speech] was much the same way. When we weaned her, she took the same position as if to tell the other babies that her mother was in charge before, so she’s in charge now. By BROCK SHERIDAN OCALA, FL— hen Buyers and Sellers Arrived at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company in June for the Spring Sale of Two Year Olds In Training, the prevailing mood was gratefulness. People were thankful that the auction season was resuming after being shut down, like much of the world economy, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But when the final hammer fell on the four-day auction held Tuesday-Friday, June 9-12, three juveniles had broken the six figure barrier including two million-dollar sellers during the final session. The OBS Spring Sale was originally scheduled for its normal spot on the 2year-old auction calendar in April, but was postponed and moved to June because of the pandemic. Officials

FromTheBoardRoom.qxp_Florida Horse_template 7/27/20 2:08 PM Page 1

From the FTBOA Boardroom —June 25, 2020 t its regularly scheduled meeting on June 25, 2020, the board of directors of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association considered the following: 1) The board reviewed and accepted the most recent Independent Auditors’ Report for the Florida Thoroughbred Breeder and Stallion Awards Program—a separate restricted account through which the FTBOA receives funds from the tracks and pays out breeder and stallion awards. This Report, prepared annually by the accounting firm of Purvis, Gray & Company, contains statements of financial position, activities, and cash flows for the Program as of Dec. 31, 2019 and 2018. The Auditors’ presentation of the Report to the board was open to the public. The Report was previously reviewed by the audit committee, which recommended its approval by the full board. The Report is available at: https://www.ftboa.com/FTBContent/Articles/Me eting%20Notices/06115AR19%20Final%20FL %20Thoroughbred%20Breeder%20and%20Sta llion%20Awards%20..pdf 2) CEO Lonny Powell and president Greg Wheeler reported on the status of the thoroughbred industry in the current pandemic environment and thanked the Florida tracks, FHBPA, OBS, the breeders, and the horsemen for their efforts, which allowed most of the Florida industry to continue racing, selling, and breeding. The Florida tracks gave the horses a place to run and connections to work, albeit spectator-less and with no on-track wagering. OBS had the only in-person sale going on in the world in March and hosted the first major thoroughbred sale in the United States with online and in-person bidding capabilities. Tampa Bay Downs extended its race meet, which added earning opportunities. Only a few other U.S. tracks were able to run during this time, all without spectators. 3) CEO Lonny Powell reviewed the negative impacts on the Florida thoroughbred in-

A

dustry caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and recapped the pro-active steps the FTBOA executive committee took on March 24 to modify the FTBOA’s 2020 Annual Awards Plan in order to maintain the solvency of the breeder and stallion awards program. In Florida, as in the entire country, the public was prohibited from entering the tracks or their associated slot machine or poker venues, thus resulting in a total elimination of these vital sources of awards revenues. Simulcasting revenues were maintained, but that revenue source generates a much lower rate of return. As approved by the State on March 31, with an effective date of April 3, the 2020 Plan was amended as follows: (a) breeder awards will be paid at a rate of 10% of the announced gross purse on FTBOA-registered Florida-bred winners (no change from previous rate), but breeder awards on second and third-place finishers were eliminated; and (b) stallion awards were reduced from the previous 15% on Florida-bred winners in specified races down to 10%. The new awards levels will extend at least through the remainder of 2020, unless circumstances change and cause the FTBOA to materially revise its financial projections. In light of the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on public thoroughbred sales in Florida and across the country, the executive committee also voted on May 12 to add another payment option for the Florida Sire Stakes yearling payment deadline for 2020. The current yearling deadline is May 15, 2020, for a payment of $250. The executive committee decided to change the $500 late yearling payment that would otherwise have been in effect from May 16 forward and to reduce it to only $275 for payments made from May 16 through Aug. 15, 2020. This new deadline falls after the OBS sales in June and prior to the July sale in order to help those owners who had horses in the cancelled sales. The FSS late yearling payment of $500 will be in effect for payments made from Aug. 16 through Nov. 15, 2020. 4) The board received a briefing on Calder’s efforts to abandon thoroughbred rac-

ing and instead use summer jai alai as the sport that would qualify Calder to continue operating slot machines. While Gulfstream plans to race at Calder for a few extra months, Calder appears firmly set on exiting horse racing, which will affect both purses and awards revenue. 5) The board received a briefing from Matt Bryan, the FTBOA’s outside lobbyist, regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the state government’s budget, with Governor DeSantis poised to issue massive budget vetoes by the end of the month, some of which may directly affect the industry. 6) The board received a briefing on the dates for the 2020 FTBOA board of directors elections. The election process remains unchanged from last year. Starting June 24, forms for selfnomination became available from the FTBOA offices upon request from the prospective candidate, in person or via fax, e-mail, or regular mail. Candidate forms must have been received at the FTBOA offices no later than July 24 at 4:30 p.m. Ballots will be mailed to members on Sept. 23. Voting ceases on Oct. 23 at the start of the Annual Membership Meeting at 1 p.m., at a location to be announced, taking into consideration applicable county, state and federal guidance on preventing coronavirus transmission. 7) It was also reported to the board that, upon careful consideration of event-planning timelines and the evolving pandemic situation, the 2020 Awards Gala will not be rescheduled. The announcement of the FTBOA’s Chase to the Championship Awards for 2019 is in progress, along with an episode of Horse Capital TV dedicated to the awards program. Plans are being put in place to make presentations to award winners at various locations, and sponsor outreach is underway. 8) An FTBOA farmland preservation work group was formed to monitor, understand, and offer feedback to FTBOA management and stakeholders regarding land rezoning and transportation developments that may impact thoroughbred breeding, ownership, and farm operations in Marion County and surrounding areas. ■

n 1972, New York entrepreneur Harry T. Mangurian Jr. established his Ocala-based Mockingbird Farm and shortly thereafter made two of his most important thoroughbred purchases. At that year’s Hialeah Park sale, he paid $40,000 for an unraced 2-year-old filly and $92,000 for her dam from the dispersal of the late Mrs. Vanderbilt Adams’ bloodstock. The filly named Desert Vixen became Mangurian’s first stakes winner and then first national champion. Her dam, Desert Trial produced three stakes winners for Mangurian, most importantly graded stakes-winner Valid Appeal. The latter became the foundation stallion for Mockingbird Farm and one of the all-time leading Florida-based sires. Despite her name, Desert Vixen had no connection to arid Arizona or Nevada. Instead, she was a Florida gal through and through. A 1970 bay filly, Desert Vixen was by Florida-bred multiple stakes-winner In Reality and out of Florida-bred multiple stakes-winner Desert Trial, by Moslem Chief. In Reality, bred and raced by

Mrs. Frances A. Genter, stood at Tartan Farms and was a leading Florida sire. Desert Trial was bred by Joe O’Farrell, who co-owned and managed Ocala Stud. She was raced by Adams and then resided as a broodmare at her Ocala farm, where she foaled Desert Vixen. In an interesting note, all of Desert Trial’s stakes-winning foals were by In Reality. But Desert Vixen, the $40,000 filly who was on the small side at 15.2 hands and 900 pounds, was the best of them all. Her racing career highlights included being a multiple Grade 1 stakes winner, a two-time Eclipse Award-winning champion and induction into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame. SCENE STEALER

After an average 1972 juvenile season where her only accomplishment was breaking her maiden, Desert Vixen became a supernova in 1973. After a pair of allowance wins, trainer Thomas F. Root Sr. dropped her into the Miss Woodford Stakes (Grade 3) on June 4 at Monmouth Park. Desert Vixen posted a good second to Shake a Leg that seemed to ignite a competitive fire in Mangurian’s DESERT VIXEN little filly. From there, she 1970 bay mare by In Reality – Desert Trial, by Moslem Chief charged through a stellar Breeder: Mrs. Vanderbilt Adams seven-race winning tour de Owner: Harry T. On June 23 in the second CAREER RACE RECORD/EARNINGS 28-13-6-3/$421,538 division of the Post-Deb Stakes (G3), Desert Vixen CAREER STAKES WINS 1973 Beldame Stakes (G1) turned in a performance that 1973 Monmouth Oaks (G1) made everyone take notice. 1973 Alabama Stakes (G1) In what would become her 1973 Delaware Oaks (G1) 1973 Gazelle Handicap (G2) signature racing style, 1973 Test Stakes (G2) Desert Vixen went to the 1973 Post-Deb Stakes (G3) 1974 Beldame Stakes (G1) lead and stayed there. She 1974 Matchmaker Stakes (G1) won by two lengths over HIGHEST HONORS Lilac Hill, equaling the 1973 Eclipse Award Champion 3-Year-Old Filly track record of 1:40 1/5 for 1974 Eclipse Award Champion Older Mare the mile-and-70 yards. The 1979 Induction Into The victory marked Desert National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Vixen’s first stakes win and first graded stakes win all rolled up into one tidy little package. Desert Vixen also became the first stakes winner for Mangurian, who had raced horses since 1966. Less than two weeks later, Root saddled Desert Vixen in the Monmouth Oaks (G1) on July 4 and she handled her first Grade 1 test like it was a kindergarten class. Unchallenged, Desert Vixen rolled to a six-length win over Ladies Agreement. Her winning time for the nine furlongs was 1:49. And just like that, Desert Vixen had become a Grade 1 stakes winner.

34 THE FLORIDA HORSE • AUGUST 2020

A mere 11 days later, Desert Vixen started in another Grade 1 race. And the Delaware Oaks (G1) at July 15 at Delaware Park was basically a rerun of her Monmouth Oaks victory. Once again, Desert Vixen won by six lengths, this time over Bag of Tunes. Over a sloppy track, she stopped the clock at 1:49 1/5 for the nine furlongs. She now had bookend Grade 1 wins. Shipped to Saratoga, Desert Vixen continued her dominance of the 3-year-old fillies division. First she captured the first division of the Test Stakes (G2), covering seven furlongs in 1:23 on Aug. 1. Then 10 days later, she was in the starting gates for the Alabama Stakes (G1) on Aug. 11. Desert Vixen didn’t just win the Alabama Stakes, she dominated it with an eight-length victory over Bag of Tunes. Her winning time for the mile and a quarter was 2:04 1/5. Desert Vixen now had a trio of Grade 1 scores. Next stop for the Desert Vixen train was Belmont Park for the Gazelle Handicap (G2) on Sept. 3 and the Beldame Stakes (G1) on Sept. 15. She posted a sixlength tally, once again over Bag of Tunes, in the Gazelle Handicap. Her winning time of 1:47 2/5 for the nine furlongs was a new stakes record. It bested the 1:48 set by Florida-bred Susan’s Girl in the 1972 Gazelle Handicap. In the Beldame Stakes, Desert Vixen raced against older fillies and mares for the first time. The field included such outstanding older distaff runners as Floridabred Susan’s Girl, who had earned the 1972 Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old filly, Summer Guest, Cathy Baby, Light Hearted and Convenience. But Desert Vixen was unfazed by her older competition. She won by eight and a half lengths over Poker Night with Susan’s Girl third. Desert Vixen’s winning time of 1:46 1/5 for nine furlongs tied the track record. The race following the Beldame Stakes was the Marlboro Cup (G1), where the mighty Secretariat broke the track record and tied the world record of 1:45 2/5 for nine furlongs. In her head-turning season, Desert Vixen had rolled to seven graded stakes wins, including four Grade 1s, in 11 starts. She banked $256,147, far exceeding the mere $10,561 she had earned in her juvenile season. Not surprisingly, Desert Vixen collected the 1973 Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old filly. Desert Vixen was the first national champion for Mangurian and the only one he raced. Mangurian would also later breed Florida-bred Gilded Time, who earned the 1992 Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old colt. UNEXPECTED CHALLENGES

Desert Vixen’s 1974 season was an odd one, but one that somehow had a fairy-tale ending. While wintering at Hialeah Park, she contracted a nasty respiratory infection with a lingering cough that interfered with her

DesertVixen.qxp_Florida Horse_template 7/23/20 10:36 AM Page 35

a-half, a distance she had never contested. But with Ron Turcotte, Secretariat’s jockey, aboard for the first time, Desert Vixen gave as good a showing, sans winning, that she could. Turcotte got Desert Vixen to the lead and slowed the early pace. She was still leading until the final sixteenth when Irish-bred Admetus caught and then passed her to win by three-quarters of a length. Finishing third was European champion grass mare Dahlia. Despite a bad-luck erratic season, Desert Vixen’s class and talent had shown through. She won two Grade 1s, finished second in two other Grade 1s and banked $154,830. And it was a season good enough to earn her the 1974 Eclipse Award as champion older mare. Desert Vixen was retired with career earnings of $421,538 and was reportedly sold privately by Mangurian. As a broodmare, she produced only four foals. Her best offspring was Real Shadai, a 1979 colt by Roberto, who won the 1982 Grand Prix De Deuville (G2). He was also stakes-placed three times and earned $161,374. Inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in 1979, Desert Vixen died in 1982. ■

training. When Root was finally able to get her galloping again, she was hit in the eye by a flying clod of dirt while on the racetrack. It wasn’t until May 13 that Desert Vixen made her first start as a 4-year-old in the Vagrancy Handicap at Belmont Park. The toll of her illness and long layoff showed itself with a more-than-disappointing 12th-place finish. While still at Belmont Park, Root ran Desert Vixen 10 days later in an allowance race and she finished third; seven days later, she was sixth in another allowance race; fourth in an allowance race on June 15. Shipped to Saratoga, Desert Vixen finally won again in an allowance race on Aug. 22. Then it was back to Belmont Park, where she was second in an allowance race. Just when it looked like Desert Vixen might be coming back into her championship form, things took another strange turn. On Sept. 11 at Belmont Park, Desert Vixen won the Maskette Stakes by a length-and-a-quarter in 1:34 3/5 for the mile. But she was disqualified from first and any purse money when her post-race test showed traces of a banned medication. Several other horses also came up with bad post-race tests from that day’s racing. Root and the other trainers were later exonerated. But for Desert Vixen, the Maskette Stakes win had flipped a switch and she was back to her top form. Ten days later on Sept. 21 at Belmont Park, Desert Vixen turned in another signature performance in the Beldame Stakes (G1). She cruised to an eye-widening 12length victory over Poker Night, who had also finished second to Desert Vixen in the 1973 Beldame Stakes. In winning her second consecutive Beldame Stakes, Desert Vixen won in 1:46 3/5 for the nine furlongs. Given a break, Desert Vixen next started in the Matchmaker Stakes (G1) at Atlantic City on Oct. 14. She took command coming into the homestretch, winning by three-and-a-half-lengths. Coming in second was Coraggioso, who had won the Vagrancy Handicap when Desert Vixen had finished that uncharacteristic 12th. And Desert Vixen had carried 123 pounds, conceding eight pounds to Coraggioso. Desert Vixen’s winning time for the Matchmaker Stakes was 1:55 1/5 for the mile-and-three-sixteenths, equaling the track record. Root sent Desert Vixen back to the races only 13 days later in the Spinster Stakes (G1) on Oct. 26 at Keeneland. Unusually rank during the race, Desert Vixen went wide on the final turn while Summer Guest saved ground on the inside. At the wire, Summer Guest prevailed by a head over Desert Vixen with Coraggioso third. Desert Vixen’s last career start was a surprising one in the Washington D.C. International (G1) at Laurel Park on Nov. 9. Surprising because the race was on the grass, a surface she had never raced on, and was at a mile-and-

evelopmental orthopedic disease (DOD) is a catch-all term that covers several abnormal skeletal developments and improper bone growth in young growing horses. These problems include osteochondrosis (improper calcification of bone directly under the cartilage layer), and physitis. Dr. Michael Schramme, (formerly at North Carolina State University and now at the University of Lyon in France) deals with many of these problems. He says osteochondrosis includes OCD (osteochondritis dissicans, or dissecting lesions in joints) and subchondral bone cysts (cystic lesions in joints). Both of these problems are due to abnormal ossification of growing cartilage. “The ends of bones in foals have a thick layer of cartilage over them. During normal growth, the thick cartilage progressively turns into bone, producing bone growth. At maturity, the final result is a thin cartilage layer, with a thick, strong bone layer directly underneath it,” he says. In osteochondrosis, things go wrong and the cartilage doesn’t turn to bone. “Another common problem is physitis, where the abnormal ossification process occurs in the growth plates at the ends of the long bones rather than in the joints,” says Schramme.

OCD (OSTEOCHONDRITIS DISSICANS)

The most common developmental problem he deals with is OCD (osteochondritis dissicans). “This is a condition in which cartilage or cartilage/bone fragments separate out in joints. During the ossification process when cartilage should be turning into bone, there are shearing, dissecting lesions developing in the cartilage. This tends to occur at specific sites in specific joints. Most affected is the hock, second most common is the stifle, third 36 THE FLORIDA HORSE • AUGUST 2020

This problem shows up more often in the also according to the horse’s projected career. “The faster the horse is expected to go (such as a racehorse), the more hind limbs than the front. “There are two types of presentations with OCD. this disease will be a career-limiting problem. When out) and two sutures. “This part of the bone never ossifies properly and a cyst forms. This is seen in many different joints but cysts are less common than dissecting lesions and most often seen in the stifle. Cysts can also been seen, to some extent, in other joints such as the fetlock, shoulder or pastern joint. We tend to see lameness or joint distension caused by bone cysts in young horses from 6-months to 3-yearsold, when first introduced into training,” says Schramme. Treatment for cysts is a little more complicated than for fragments, and they do not have such a good prognosis. “The first line of treatment would be to inject the joint with cortisone and rest the horse—confine it for 3 months in a stall—to reduce stress on the joint. The reason for this conservative approach is two-fold. First, cysts don’t respond so well to surgical treatment. Second, there is a better chance of the inflammation settling down with rest and injections than for dissecting lesions in OCD. The latter separations will never heal back on. But the cysts can either fill in or settle down sufficiently to stop irritating the joints,” he says. “This approach only works with young horses, however. The older the horse, the less effective the rest and joint injections will be. If confinement and rest do not work, the only option is surgical treatment to debride the content of the cysts (scrape the surfaces) since they tend to have an inflammatory lining. Once this lining has been removed, some surgeons inject cortisone into the bone (where they’ve scraped out the lining of the cyst). Others put a bone graft in, to try to fill the cyst. Others put cartilage cells or stem cells in a fibrin glue (cells harvested from elsewhere in that horse) to fill up the cyst,” he says. The surgical treatment of bone cysts is more complicated than dealing with a dissecting bone fragment, and the outcome is less predictable. Some cysts may become larger as a result of surgery. For this reason, some surgeons inject cortisone directly into the cyst during arthroscopic surgery, without scraping out the contents. The outcome of cyst surgery is directly related to the horse’s age. The older the horse, the less likely the surgery will be successful. Dr. David Frisbie at Colorado State University has worked with many stifle problems and says bone cysts may have an osteochondrosis origin in young animals, but can also occur in adult horses after trauma. There are also varied appearances. “In some cases a radiograph will show a big hole in the bone—maybe ¾ inch in diameter. These typically occur in the medial femoral condyle of the stifle. These lesions can vary from just being a flattening of the condyle to a crescent-shaped divot, to a divot that’s 5 mm deep, to a full-blown cyst,” Frisbie says.

CAUSES OF DOD

“All of these diseases occur more frequently in large, fast-growing young horses. The larger the young horse and the faster it grows, the higher the chance it has one or more of these conditions,” says Schramme. Breeders have inadvertently selected for these, wanting youngsters big enough to compete in sports like racing at an early age. People have also been feeding them more—for faster growth. “This is why we’ve seen more DOD problems since the 1950’s, when the horse was converted from an animal of work and war to a competitive athlete.” There is also some indication that foals born early in the year are at higher risk, in climates where it’s not possible to turn them out. “In a cold climate, early foals won’t have the benefit of turnout and exercise, and this seems to predispose them to more problems. Natural exercise is one important factor, along with nutrition. In Kentucky they found that early foals are more prone to hock OCD and later foals more prone to stifle OCD. This may have something to do with exercise or the contents of spring grass compared to summer grass. There are many factors involved; there is usually no single, obvious cause or reason for DOD.” Schramme says there are basically four causes; each case is usually a combination of some or all of them. “These are genetic predisposition; rapid growth (which includes growth spurts—which may occur when foals catch up after stress of weaning, illness or some other factor in which growth was temporarily slowed); nutrition (high energy intake, copper shortage, calcium/phosphorus imbalances); and trauma—too much exercise and overload,” he explains. “This last cause, exercise and trauma, is open to debate: do you swollen stifle need to confine foals or exercise them? There have been studies with contradictory results, but most people feel it is better to provide foals with free turnout than confine them completely or give them short bouts of high speed activity. Joint cartilage of foals that don’t get turnout has lost the ability to adapt functionally to the load placed on it, once these foals reach 5 months of age. Once cartilage has lost the ability of adaptation, it’s more apt to become injured and degenerate quicker. The best way to help those tissues to adapt functionally (to produce cartilage heterogeneity, which means that in different places in the joints the cartilage adapts in different ways to the load placed upon it) is to allow free exercise in the first 5 months of its life.” The healthiest option is to mimic nature. This can sometimes have negative effects. Foals may become injured when first turned out. The mare goes tearing around the pasture and the foal tries to keep up with mama. “That’s when they strain or break things. This risk can be minimized by sedating the mare for first turnout or going gradually to the large pasture (a small turnout paddock first) to avoid the sudden tearing around. Even with those exceptions, it is better for foals to be out, rather than stall-bound,” Schramme says. Regarding genetics, stallions with OCD will produce foals that are 1.5 times more likely to have OCD than foals born from parents without OCD. “There is also an overlap between genetic predisposition and rapid growth. There is a further crossover between rapid growth, excess body weight and trauma sustained by joints during weight bearing,” he says. So all four causes may be interrelated. ■ THE FLORIDA HORSE • AUGUST 2020 39

ARE SOME OCD LESIONS NORMAL?

There is research evidence that the dissecting (fragmenting) lesions on the bone surface of a joint can keep changing and even repair themselves, up to about 5 months of age for the hock, and up to 8 months of age for the stifle. “This research data is from Holland, where there is incidence of OCD in about 30% of Dutch Warmblood foals. Scientists from the University of Utrecht followed a number of these foals through the first months of life. They found evidence of lesions at 3 months in many foals, but at 5 to 6 months these lesions were gone. So they hypothesized that a potential repair process exists early in life,” says Schramme. “The same potential would apply to bone cysts, since in young animals (up to about a year of age), cartilage can repair itself. It has blood flow and a high metabolic rate while the horse is still growing. Once a horse is a year old, however, this tissue becomes set. Cartilage itself is almost inert. Finding an articular cartilage lesion in an older horse is bad news because it will never repair itself. Cartilage will only continue to degenerate further. But in foals, there is a repair capacity. There’s a window of opportunity, which according to some authorities goes to 8 months—in which cartilage can self-repair in some of these lesions,” he says. “We used to think radiographic evidence of OCD in a horse, even if it was a foal 2 to 3 months old, was always abnormal. Now we realize that most young horses may develop some irregularity in the process of cartilage ossification, but these irregularities can self-repair. So we don’t want to rush in until the self-repair window of cartilage has come to a close, at about a year of age. The concept has changed from looking at OCD as a disease that is readily recognized radiographically, to thinking that maybe it is part of the normal growing process—and only becomes important if the self-repair hasn’t worked,” Schramme explains. ■ 40 THE FLORIDA HORSE • AUGUST 2020

nique for dealing with these. Instead of simply scooping out those cysts when they become a problem, we go around the periphery of the cyst with an injection. There’s a lining that produces chemicals that retard healing of the bone. If we decrease the metabolism of that lining, depending on who is doing the surgery we may get 80 to 90% of those horses back to full work within 2 or 3 months,” he explains. This is a good prognosis for most of the horses.

“We often see these bone cysts/flattenings on prepurchase films, and they are not always associated with lameness. We’ve done some work in which we looked at repository films, and many of these horses were not lame. We looked at long-term performance outcomes, in 3 and 4-year-old horses, and didn’t see a high association with flattening on the condyle based on the repository findings,” Frisbie says. When people see changes on the condyle on pre-purchase radiographs, they may not understand that these may not be a big problem. “This is something that has changed in our general knowledge, realizing that not all abnormalities on the condyle will become a problem,” he says. “Subsequently we’ve developed a new tech-

PHYSITIS

Inflammation of the growth zone or physis at the ends of the long bones creates pain and enlargement, and usually occurs in fast-growing foals and weanlings. The cartilage that would ordinarily be turning into bone at these growth zones builds up without ossifying, creating abnormal pressure in the physis. “The best way to deal with this is to slow down growth of the foal and restrict exercise,” says Schramme. Exercise puts additional stress and pressure on the thickened growth plates. To adequately slow down growth (depending on age of the foal) may mean weaning it early, or reducing carbohydrate intake in the weaned animal. “With any of these diseases, make sure trace elements are adequate in the diet. There must be a proper balance, especially of vitamins and minerals. Supplements can be used, if needed, to balance the diet. Particularly important are the calcium/phosphorus ratio, and adequate levels of copper in the diet,” says Schramme. ■

Speech Es La Voz De Florida En La Ruta A La Kentucky Oaks

S

48 THE FLORIDA HORSE • AUGUST 2020
