Fast Starts & Favorites I
t is the earliest of early to consider who may be the favorite for the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby to JOHN D. FILER PHOTO be run during the first weekend of May at Churchill Downs, but there are some Florida-bred youngsters who are off to fast starts on and off the leaderboards published by the historic track. In the race for the Oaks, two Florida-bred fillies are among the four with 10 points and tied for third. Shane’s Girlfriend earned her points with an impressive victory in the Grade 3 Delta Downs Princess Stakes run Nov. 19. The Southern California-based filly set a new stakes record in the $400,000 Princess running the mile in 1:37.98 on the six furlong Delta Downs track while defeating fellow Floridian Cajun Delta Dawn by 13½ lengths. Shane’s Girlfriend is by Adios Charlie, who stands at Ocala Stud. She was bred by Ocala Stud who also consigned her at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales June auction where she was purchased by current co-owner Dennis O’Neill, who has since partnered with ERJ Racing LLC and WC Racing. She is trained by Dennis’ brother Doug O’Neill who has won the Kentucky Derby twice with I’ll Have Another and Nyquist but to give them is looking for his first Oaks victory. some rooting interest and If one want’s to dismiss the Delta well-founded optimism Downs Princess because it is run at Delta Downs instead of Santa Anita, Saratoga, Gulfstream or the likes, consider that two of the last three winners were Tepin in 2013 and Take Charge Brandi in 2014, both of whom are multiple Grade 1 winning millionaires. Also among the fillies with 10 points is the Bob Bafferttrained Noted and Quoted, who was bred in Florida by Gilbert Campbell of Tynsboro, Mass. After breaking her maiden at Del Mar in August then finishing fourth in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante, the gray or roan daughter of The Factor picked up her points by winning the Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 1. Her front-running style may have been compromised a bit by drawing post ten in the 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies where she led until the top of the stretch only to finish eighth, but she certainly has shown the potential to compete and win against top company going two turns.
Fans have seen enough from this class
6 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016
Picking up four points on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks by finishing second to Shane’s Girlfriend in the Delta Princess was Florida-bred Cajun Delta Dawn, a winner of both the Desert Vixen and Susan’s Girl, the first two legs of the Florida Sire Stakes at Gulfstream Park over the summer. Like Noted and Quoted, Cajun Delta Dawn has shown an affinity to lead the pack from start to finish. She was able to press the pace in the My Dear Girl leg of the Florida Sire Stakes, but breaking from the outside post 13 appeared to compromise her chances and she could only manage a fourth behind winner Dude Fantasy. Bred by Curtis Mikkelsen and Patricia Horth of Crystal River, Fla., Cajun Delta Dawn was unable to get to the lead again in the Delta Princess, but was still able to overtake the favorite at the top of the stretch and get up for second and earn her points toward the Kentucky Oaks. Trainer David Fawkes has returned Cajun Delta Dawn to Florida where she will likely get some time off before resuming her career in some of the more prestigious races for 3-year-old fillies in South Florida over the winter and spring. And while these fillies are already on the board with points toward the Oaks, perhaps the biggest star of the Florida-bred freshman class of 2016 should not be left out of the conversation to be among the more promising 3year-old colts and geldings next year. Shade Tree Thoroughbreds’ Three Rules disappointed with his sixth-place finish in the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile but that was the first loss of his six-race career after traveling cross country the hard way from his base in South Florida. It took a 19-hour van ride to Louisville, Ky., and a six-hour flight to Los Angeles to get to Santa Anita which cost the son of Northwest Stud’s Gone Astray days of training and possibly a better shot at performing at his best. Once he returns home and competes against top level sophomores on his home turf at Gulfstream, he should be a much more difficult adversary. So yes it is early to start projecting the winners of two of the most challenging races in the game in the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby, but Florida fans have seen enough from this class to give them some rooting interest and well-founded optimism going into the New Year. ■

Stallwalkin’ Dude has won 12 of 31 starts for trainer and co-owner David Jacobson since he was claimed for $16,000 from Hardacre Farm and trainer Angel Penna Jr. The 6-year-old gelded son of City Place out of the Dare and Go mare Chelle Spendabuck is a product of Maria M. Haire’s breeding operation in Ocala. Stallwalkin’ Dude is one of six winners dropped by Chelle Spendabuck. Second dam Harvest the Gold was a $250,000 sales purchase who was a half-sister to Alcibiades (G2) runner-up Slew Kitty Slew. Both Jacobson and jockey Irad Ortiz said the Bold Ruler went just as they had drawn it up in their pre-race planning. Off well without being pressured early, Stallwalkin Dude tracked the pace of Green Gratto with Cadyrn, Threefiveindia and Touchofstarquality in the second tier through an opening quarter in :22.70 and :45.28. Ortiz coaxed his mount closer at the three-eighths pole, then swung out coming off the turn and assumed command, opening a three-length lead and coasting home under an occasional reminder from his rider. “That was a great race,” Jacobson said. “It was exactly the way we planned it in the paddock and Irad just did a great job.” Stallwalkin’ Dude tripped six furlongs in 1:08.99 and hit the wire in 1:21.66. Threefiveindia and Economic Model, a
pair of 3-year-olds trained by Chad Brown, finished well to get second and third, respectively. Mylute was fourth, followed by Green Gratto, Dannie’s Deceiver, Ami’s Flatter, Cadeyrn, Touchofstarquality, Face of Winner and Farhaan. The winner paid $10.80 while pushing his earnings to $1,088,352. “I got a very good trip,” Ortiz said. “We broke on top and I planned to hold him as long as I could taking him back going seveneighths behind the speed, and that’s what we did. When I asked him, he was there for me.” Stallwalkin’ Dude had been in nine previous graded stakes, all under Jacobson’s care: He was only a neck away when third in last year’s Vosburgh (G1) Stakes under Ortiz and he came into the Bold Ruler off a second and a third in this year’s Vosburgh and Forego, which is also a Grade 1. He was beaten only 4¾ lengths while eighth in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint. “I didn’t realize [he had not won a graded stakes],” Jacobson said. “He’s won so many races for us, he’s been competing against some of the really good horses, and he’s a millionaire now!” ■
Blinkers Work. Evidently Breeder, trainer and owner Roy Lerman could have tossed out the disclaimer “no pun intended” while having fun with news-
Stallwalkin’ Dude joined the club of Florida-bred millionaires Oct. 29, doing it in style with his 1½-length win in Belmont Park’s Grade 3, $200,000 Bold Ruler Handicap. Highweighted at 121 pounds and giving anywhere from three to seven pounds to his 10 opponents in the seven-furlong race for 3-yearolds and up, the durable Stallwalkin’ Dude was making his 46th career starts, scoring his 16th victory and tallying in his first graded stakes. 12 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016

men Nov. 6, going along with their thought that the addition of blinkers to his horse’s equipment may have made the difference between winning and losing Aqueduct’s
$200,000 Long Island Handicap. “I guess it worked, empirically anyway,” he said. Evidently.
His 5-year-old mare by that name snapped an 11-race winless streak in upsetting the Grade 2, 1½-mile turf event, nipping Earring on the line to win by a nose under Antonio Gallardo’s riding masterpiece. The top seven were with 1½ lengths of one another in a crowded photo finish: Earring was a half-length in front of third-place Desiree Clary, who had a head on Swear By It. Itsonlyactingdad and Promotional deadheated for sixth, another head back. Running over a course labeled “good,” the Marion County-bred Evidently drifted to the back while racing on the outside, free of trouble, as Earring took the field on a stroll through the park, getting an opening quartermile in :25.49 and the half in :52.75 before reaching the midway point in a 1:19.68 sleepwalk. “The slowest race ever in America!” Ler-

Florida FOCUS man told The Florida Horse, with no hint of embarrassment. Eighth of the nine contending fillies and mares after a quarter, Gallardo settled his mount into seventh while closing the gap, moving Evidently to within four lengths of the leader on the backstretch and into the final turn. Saving ground along the rail, Evidently appeared boxed in midway down the stretch until Gallardo guided her through a hole near the eighth pole, surging and just getting up in time to edge Earring on the line.“I knew I had a lot of horse,” Gallardo said. “I took a shot and she gave me a really good kick. The pace was a little slow, but she liked that. She felt comfortable. When I asked, she gave me everything.”Evidently’s winless streak included a disqualification from first to fifth in July of 2015 and, evidently, the bumping she endured in that event may have affected her psyche. “She had been slightly hesitant to get by horses after that race but [in the Long Island]
14 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016
she was more aggressive and into the bit. I thought the blinkers would help but it was likely a combination of things,” Lerman said, noting that it was Gallardo’s first ride aboard the mare. “She really got a perfect trip,” he said. “I knew she loved the distance. She was able to save ground and make her way along the rail … Tony had never ridden her before, but she was a touch more aggressive, and thankfully it worked out.” Off at better than 13-1, the daughter of Smart Strike paid $29.20 after getting the 12 furlongs in 2:34.50. Her 21st career start resulted in her third win and it boosted her earnings to $259,073. Lerman took Evidently’s dam, Supposedly, out of Fasig-Tipton’s Timonium sale in 2000 for $70,000. He has clearly enjoyed ownership of Supposedly, winning with her in four of her 13 starts, a record that includes her victory in Laurel’s Pearl Necklace Stakes. And, as a jurist, he’s enjoyed naming
her foals: In addition to Evidently, Supposedly is also the dam of Ostensibly, Presumptive and Plausibly. That theme is a continuation of a notable female line that began with the multiple stakes-winning turf mare Princess Pout, Evidently’s third dam. Among Princess Pout’s five foals is the two-time Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Alleged. Lerman told The Florida Horse he expects to return his 12-horse string back to Marion County and his Lambholm South Farm the next few days. He said he was contemplating a race that he sponsors – the Grade 3, $150,000 Lambholm South Endeavour Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 11 – as the next target for Evidently. ■

Cordero at Camarero Race Track. The margin at the wire was three-quarters of a length, by far Derek Adrian’s narrowest score yet, but he showed a new dimension in the race, coming from off the pace to win while drawing out. The Dennis Foster-bred son of In Summation had devastated his competition in five prior starts, all in Puerto Rico, since Eric Aquino bought him out of an OBS sale for $14,000, but the seven-furlong Cordero figured to be a more difficult challenge. Opposing him were a pair of fellow Florida-breds who went through the OBS ring: Remember Willy, a son of JP’s Gusto bred by Phil and Karen Matthews had finished in the top three in all five

of his prior starts, including a 6¾-length victory, and Noble Quest, a dedicated frontrunner bred by Wilbur and Diane France who was undefeated in two starts and was coming off a handy two-length tally against winners. Noble Quest grabbed the early lead and did his best to go all the way in the Cordero, throwing a :23.17 opening quarter-mile at the competition and tripping the half-mile marker in :46.28. But Derek Adrian was a constant and menacing presence throughout. He hooked the leader on the turn and wore him down in the stretch, finishing the race in 1:25.57 under regular rider Javier Santiago. Remarkably, Derek Adrian, Noble Quest and Florida Sire Stakes Triple Crown winner Three Rules were all born in Bert Pilcher’s foaling barn at Shade Tree Thoroughbreds in Reddick. Derek Adrian is trained by Sammy Diaz. ■
Bridlewood Wins Bidding Battle to get Baffled Bridlewood Farm general manager George Isaacs was again buying top level thoroughbreds at public auction, this time at the FasigTipton November sale held in Lexington, Ky., Nov. 7. Isaacs, with Bridlewood Farm owner John Malone sitting next to him, went to $3.5 million to purchase Hip 104, Baffled, who is believed to be in foal to two-time leading sire Tapit. “I prepared the boss that I thought the mare would bring around $3 million and if I had been sitting there by myself and could not have got Mr. Malone on the phone, I would not have bid another time,” Isaacs said. “But he was next to me and we just walked our way through it and decided we would keep going.” Reports indicate that Isaacs outbid Don Alberto Farm owner Carlos Heller and Teo Ah King of The China Horse Club to get the daughter of Distorted Humor out of the Ocean Crest mare Surf Club. Baffled was graded stakes-placed on the track and is a halfsister to Forego Stakes (G1) winner Emcee, U.A.E. Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 (G2) winner Surfer and stakes winner Spring Party. In the breeding shed, Baffled has produced Florida Derby (G1) and Donn Handicap (G1) winner Constitution, Tempted Stakes (G3) winner Jacaranda and Superlative Stakes (G3) winner Boynton. Baffled produced a Graydar filly in 2015. She was consigned to the sale by Taylor Made Sales. “Mr. Malone has given me the opportunity to create a very special, commercial breeding program and to reenergize Bridlewood Farm as a very relevant breeder and that is my mandate,” Isaacs said. “One by one, we are trying to assemble a group of queens that will help us achieve our goal of becoming a top breeder. Baffled is certainly a blue hen type mare—a queen if you will—and

He said the mare will reside at Bridlewood. “I looked across the room and realized that it was most likely them that was the under-bidder,” Isaacs said. “They have been such big supporters of our training program and reenergizing that side of our operation that I thought it made perfect sense since they are like-minded in that they also want to own the best mares that money can buy. So we offered them the opportunity [to purchase 50 percent of Baffled] and they graciously accepted. “She is already at Bridlewood,” he said Nov. 9. “As I have said before, every foal that has ever been born for Bridlewood has been a Florida-bred and that is not going to change.” In September, Bridlewood went to $2 million with Coolmore as a partner to purchase a half-brother to Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner and Florida-bred Horse of the Year Mucho Macho Man. The yearling colt is by Tapit. Bridlewood and Coolmore also went to

Astray colt returned to South Florida on Nov. 9, four days after suffering his first loss in six career starts in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Santa Anita. “Everything went smooth. He came out of the race 100 percent sound, which was the main thing. The trip was a good experience. He got to compete at the top level,” Pinchin said. “The experience he got will help him so much.” Three Rules raced three wide chasing the leaders through opening fractions of 23.05 and 46.60 seconds before tiring to sixth, beaten 14 ¾ lengths. He finished ahead of Grade 1 winners Gormley and Klimt and Grade 3 winner Theory. “He ran good. He had a hard time. He had to van 29 hours to Louisville and then fly to California. He didn’t [train] for five days and he was a little bit dull,” Pinchin said. “He broke bad for the first time in his life, but it is what it is. “You’re running against the best of the best,” he added. “They say this crop of 2-yearolds is the best in 10 years. The fractions were fast. He didn’t disgrace himself. He had some Grade 1 winners behind him.” Gulfstream Park will open its 2016-2017 Championship Meet Saturday, Dec. 3. Its series of stakes for 3-year-olds include the $100,000 Mucho Macho Man at one mile Jan. 7, the $350,000 Lambholm South Holy Bull (G2) at 1 1/16 miles Feb. 4 and the $400,000 Fountain of Youth (G2) at 1 1/16 miles March 4, leading up to the 66th running of the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby. Three Rules won his first five races by a combined 31 lengths, capturing the Birdonthewire Stakes July 2 in his second career start before sweeping the 2016 Florida Sire Stakes series. “He’s going to be pointed for those races down here, the Holy Bull and the Florida Derby, if he’s good enough. He’ll go on that campaign,” Pinchin said. “He’ll get 30 days off and then he’ll go back in training. He will be competing against some of the same horses [as the Breeders’ Cup] during the winter meet, but he’ll be fine.” ■ THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016 17

20 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016

No pasó

& With FTBOA president
Brent Fernung Q
The Florida Horse editor-in-chief Brock Sheridan recently sat down with new FTBOA president Brent Fernung to discuss his experience as an FTBOA member, board member and his aspirations and plans as the Association’s new president.
: How long have you been involved in the thoroughbred industry and how did you get started….. what got you into, specifically, the Florida Thoroughbred breeding industry? A: As a kid growing up in Indiana, we always had a few cheap horses around. My older brother, John, trained horses around the Ohio and Kentucky circuit, and I fell in love with it early on. I bought my first broodmare for $800 when I was 14 years old from money I made pinhooking goats (another whole story). The mare died a few months later. Crystal and I got married in 1975. The following year, we moved to Florida when I got a job as a groom at Lasater Farm near Belleview. I stumbled into the broodmare manager position a few years later and eventually went on to become the farm manager at that facility.
Q
: Congratulations on your recent election as president of the FTBOA. We know this position is a very demanding one. Having served since late October, what do you think so far? A: Since I served as a VP for five years, I thought I had a pretty good handle on the scope and demands of the president’s job. As it turns out, it’s even more complex and time-consuming than I expected. Despite my experience on the board, I still find there is more for me to learn every day. I’m fortunate though that I have a great support group led by [CEO] Lonny [Powell] and four past presidents that I can turn to for advice!
Q
: You’ve been an FTBOA member for a number of years. What has the FTBOA meant to you as a member?
A: I’ve been a member of the FTBOA for decades. I’ve always thought of the Association primarily as the Florida breeding industry’s principal advocate to the rest of the state and the country. That perspective has never wavered. We should never lose sight of the first line of the Articles of Incorporation that charges the Association with “promoting the thoroughbred horse breeding industry in Florida and the country at large.”
Q
: Based on your perspective as a member, board member, former officer, and now as president, what do you believe are the greatest strengths of the FTBOA? A: The greatest strengths of the FTBOA include our dedicated staff and management, led by Lonny Powell, who work so diligently to promote and defend the industry. Our representation in Tallahassee, led by our lobbyist, Matt Bryan, is also one of our great strengths. Matt has been with the Association since the 1980’s. Finally, our greatest attribute is Ocala, Florida. Nowhere else in the world can you find the combination of climate, facilities, and support personnel that you can find here.
Q
: So tell us a little bit about your fellow officers and your perspective on what it is like to be an engaged board member of the FTBOA? A: I feel very fortunate to be able to work with the Association’s current officers, as well as the past presidents. I’ve known Phil Matthews since the early 1980s. He is a great critical thinker with a practical mind. I’ve learned a lot from George Russell as well, watching how he THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016 23

&
conducts himself and how he has navigated a number of challenges over the past few years. Together, having these two past presidents that I can turn to for advice is going to serve me, the members, and the Association well. Joe O’Farrell is a fine representative of the newer generation who will shortly be taking over the reins of our industry. Greg Wheeler offers a unique perspective as a small farm owner, and his counsel has already been very beneficial to me. When I joined this board, I brought no expectations with me, just a desire to learn and to be a productive member. You get as much out of this experience as you are willing to put into it. Every single member of this board is here to try to be of benefit to the Florida thoroughbred community.
Q
: You’ve attended virtually every public meeting the FTBOA conducted this year. What are your thoughts so far? A: The public meetings are an outreach effort to help educate and inform the membership on how the Association is run and how the award programs work.
I’d really like to see greater attendance at these meetings, so that more of our members would have a grasp of the complexities the Association must wrestle with, both within the broader racing industry and in Tallahassee.
Q
: So, what would you like to say about Tallahassee and another soon-to-be action-packed legislative session next spring? A: As Yogi Berra said, “It’s like deja vu all over again.” Since no bill passed in 2016, we still have the same issues in front of us for 2017. Decoupling will surely be pushed yet again by the tracks and frontons that no longer want to conduct live racing and jai alai. The FTBOA is not going to pull the covers over our heads and hope it goes away. We will be proactive in opposing decoupling, but at the end of the day, our responsibility is to the Florida thoroughbred industry. If our state legislators ultimately decide to decouple greyhounds, standardbreds, and quarter horses, then we must pull out all the stops to protect thoroughbred breeding and racing in our state, including through the establishment of a substantial state purse pool.
Q
: You’ve also owned horses at the track. There seems to be a lot of passionate debate here in Florida and elsewhere about whether the owners’ voices and priorities are being heard. What are your thoughts? A: I find it deeply disturbing that the one group really responsible for putting the show on — the owners — have so little voice at the racetrack. When the horsemen lobby the track to give a stipend to the trainers for each horse they run, it ignores who the real loser is in that transaction . . . the owners who pay the bills! The owner’s need a larger voice in the racing industry!
Q
: In closing, Mr. President, are there any final words you would like to leave with the FTBOA’s membership? A: I’m honored and truly appreciate the confidence that the board has placed in me by selecting me to be the president of the Association. I will do everything in my power to be a good representative of the board and the membership. The Florida thoroughbred industry has a lot of challenges ahead of it. The best way for us to confront those challenges is with a unified voice. In keeping with the primary objective of the FTBOA, we all need to actively promote the Florida thoroughbred industry and our Association that works so hard to defend it. ■ 24 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016

Farm City Week
1
Farm City Week is a week full of activities from November 14 through 21 to promote the National Farm City week’s educational topic of “Food from Farm to Table”. Farm-City Week reminds us of the interdependency of food producers and food consumers, as well as those who process, package, transport and retail food. The Marion County Farm City Week included a number of activities to promote the agricultural lifestyle – a photo contest, the Plant/Science Research and Education Unit Open House on November 16, a legislator breakfast on a horse farm on November 17, the Marion County Agriculture Hall of Fame exhibit, and proclamations from the city and county.
2 The week was sponsored by The Marion County Farm City Week Coalition, UF/IFAS Marion County Extension Service, Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ & Owners’ Association, Florida Equine Communications, Marion County Farm Bureau, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Marion County Public Schools, Marion County Peanut Producers, Ocala/Marion County Chamber Economic Partnership (CEP), Marion County library system and the 5 Ocala/Marion County Visitor and Convention Bureau.

By JOANN GUIDRY ith diverse business operations in Venezuela, Argentina, Columbia, Costa Rica and Florida, Miami-based Vicente Perez spends a lot of time traveling. For the most part, those trips are all business. But when Perez visits V.K. Farm, his Morriston, Fla.-based thoroughbred farm, it's both business and pleasure. “Yes, the Morriston farm is a commercial breeding operation, so it's a business,” said Perez, who with his wife Anna Karina established the farm in 2009. “But it's also a place where I can come to relax with my family and get away from business for awhile. My son, Dimitri, is eight and my daughter Alexa is three. We love coming to the farm for long weekends and holidays.”

attention with Florida-bred sales toppers and stakes horses. That downtime is essential to Perez, whose business endeavors include: a thoroughbred breeding farm in Venezuela; agro-industrial operations in Costa Rica (pineapples) and Argentina (cattle, soy, wheat and corn); public and private construction in Costa Rica with future ones planned in Colombia and Mexico; waste management companies in Costa Rica and Colombia. Perez maintains corporate offices in Costa Rica and Caracas, as well as an administrative office in Miami. “I spend a great majority of the year traveling,” said Perez, who has a master's degree in finance. It's necessary to take care of business, but it's also why coming to “ the farm is so important. Just walking around the farm and being around the horses is very relaxing. It's good for me and it's good for my family. ” “It's necessary to take care of business, but it's also why coming to the farm is so important. Just walking around the farm and being around the horses is very relaxing. It's good for me and it's good for my family.” CHILDHOOD EQUINE CONNECTION
In a way, Perez is paying forward something he gained from his childhood to his family. Growing up in Venezuela, the Perez family wasn't directly involved in the thoroughbred business. But there was a strong connection through a family friend. “My father's best friend had racehorses and owned the most successful breeding operation in Venezuela,” Perez recalled. “Our two families were very close and we spent a lot of time together. We would visit the farm a lot, so that's how I was around horses.” As fate would have it, Perez now actually owns that very same farm. In 2008, Perez bought Los Aguacates, the farm he used to visit growing up. The 1,200-acre
28 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016
farm in Valencia is home to 125 mares and eight stallions. It has been the leading thoroughbred breeding farm in Venezuela for the past 12 years and has bred a remarkable 126 graded stakes winners in that country. For a time, Perez also owned a thoroughbred breeding operation in Argentina until selling it in 2016. He did retain ownership of significant acreage of the Argentina farm, where he runs cattle and grows soy, corn and wheat. “As I was looking to expand Los Aguacates, I thought I would buy some mares in the United States and then send them to the farm in Venezuela,” Perez said. “With that in mind, I began looking at property in the Ocala area to have a farm that would be a holding way station for the mares. But once I bought the land and started building on it, I liked it so much that I decided to make it a separate entity.” In 2009, Perez bought 170 acres of raw, undeveloped land in Morriston, the rural community northwest of Ocala replete with horse farms. In went paddocks, a 12-

stall broodmare barn and a 24-stall yearling barn. Perez also built a family home, as well as a manager's house. “We named it V.K. Farm, using mine and my wife's first initials,” said Perez. “But we operate under the corporate name of Farm III Enterprises. We have a small, but excellent team. Gilberto Lopez is the general manager and Bill Munn is our bloodstock adviser. Together, we make all the decisions.” BUSINESS FIRST
As with Los Aguacates, Perez wanted the Morriston farm to be a commercial breeding operation. “We don't race,” he said. “Our business is to sell horses, primarily in the yearling market. But depending on the horse and circumstances, we will sell them as weanlings and 2-year-olds.”
To produce horses, there must be broodmares. So gathering a broodmare band was the first order of business. “We began looking for young mares with good breeding and who ran well at the racetrack,” said Perez. “We wanted mares who were in foal to good, young stallions to get babies on the ground. We bought some at sales, as well as privately. The price range was anywhere from $40,000 to $150,000.” The broodmare band currently numbers 38. Among its members are blacktype producers She's Sensational, Bold Pegasus, Dixieland Event, Stark Beauty, Pashmina and Flexible Princess. Perez noted that his ideal annual foal crop is 30. Under perfect conditions, he would “sell 20 yearlings, six twoyear-olds and four weanlings from each crop.” “Of course, it's a learning process from crop to crop,” Perez said. “We have to continuously evaluate each crop, taking into account each individual and what market they would best sell in. And then, of course, there is always horses getting sick or getting hurt. So we have to take all those things into account.” An early broodmare purchase by Perez has returned quick dividends. At the 2010 Keeneland November mixed sale, Farm III Enterprises signed the ticket for $150,000 on She's Sensational, in foal to Sky Mesa. A multiple stakes winner of $174,540, She's Sensational is by Point Given out of Blushing Issue, by Blushing John. She's a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Lady of Shamrock and Grade 2 stakes winner Smooth Jazz. Bred to Tizway, She's Sensational produced a 2013 Florida-bred bay colt. With Lane's End, agent, the colt was consigned to the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale. There he was bought for $42,000 by Parrish Farms, agent. The latter then consigned the colt to the 2015 OBS March juvenile sale, where he sold for $140,000 to current owner William L. Clifton Jr. Named Our Way, the now 3-year-old gelding became the first Florida-bred stakes winner bred by Farm III EnLOUISE REINAGEL PHOTO

terprises when he won the Better Talk Now Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 29, 2016. Also second in the Sophomore Turf Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, Our Way has to date earnings of $163,724. “Getting our first stakes winner is very gratifying,” said Perez. “We don't take it for granted.” And She's Sensational has continued to live up to her name. Her 2014 colt by Candy Ride (Arg) topped the 2016 Barretts May juvenile sale, fetching $290,000 from Kaleem Shah. Named Borg, the colt was consigned by Stephens Thoroughbreds. The lat-
ter operation is a neighboring farm and where Perez sends the yearlings to be broken and trained for the juvenile sales. “We sales prep for the weanling and yearling sales on the farm. We consign our yearlings with Lane's End and Paramount Sales,” said Perez. “But if a horse is going on to the 2-year-old sales, then we send them over to John Stephens. He does a great job getting them ready for the juvenile sales.” She's Sensational's 2015 City Zip colt was sold as a weanling by Lane's End, agent for Farm III Enterprises, for $90,000 at the 2015 Keeneland November mixed sale. Bought by Tim Deschler, the colt was then sold for $250,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September yearling sale. Consigned again by Lane's End, agent, the colt was bought by Midwest Thoroughbreds. In 2016, She's Sensational had a Will Take Charge filly and was bred to Into Mischief for 2017. “She's Sensational has been a phenomenal mare for us,” said Perez. “We are very fortunate to have her in our broodmare band.”

RECORD SALES TOPPER & RACING SUCCESS
At the 2011 Keeneland November mixed sale, Farm III Enterprises purchased stakes-placed Successful Sarah for $50,000, in foal to Big Brown. By Successful Appeal out of Sarah Rosebud, by Unreal Zeal, Florida-bred Successful Sarah banked $169,614 in her racing career. Consigned by Lane's End, agent for Farm III Enterprises, her 2012 Big Brown colt sold for $40,000 at the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale. Named Iphone Addiction, the gelding has to date earned $50,087. Successful Sarah's 2014 City Zip colt stole the show at the 2016 OBS June sale, setting a Florida-bred salestopper record selling for $800,000. Consigned by Stephens Thoroughbreds, the colt was bought by Donato Lanni, agent for Frank Fletcher Racing Operations.

I'm very happy with the success that we've already had with horses “ from our Ocala farm. We started everything from scratch, from the ground up, and we will continue to move forward from here. I like to keep a long-term plan and goals in mind. I want us to still be doing well in 20, 30 years from now.

The colt has since been named C Z Rocket. “I was on the phone in my Miami office during the sale and it was very exciting,” said Perez. “That colt had had lots of bad luck. We were going to sell him as a yearling, but he kicked the wall in his stall. Then we were going to sell him in an early 2-year-old sale and he banged up a knee on a paddock fence. So we kept pushing him back until he made it to the June sale. Guess it was just meant to be.” Successful Sarah has a 2015 City Zip filly, a 2016 Verrazano colt and was bred to Tale of the Cat for 2017. In addition to Florida-bred stakes winner Our Way, Farm III Enterprises is also represented as a breeder in 2016 by Florida-bred stakes-placed winners Rare Candy and Boheme de Lavi. By Twirling Candy out of Bold Pegasus, by Fusaichi Pegasus, Rare Candy was second
in the California Chrome Stakes at Laurel Race Course and has to date earned $151,235. Boheme de Lavi, by Graeme Hall out of Salty N Sassy, by Salt Lake, was second in the Shine Again Stakes at Laurel. Boheme de Lavi, who was also third in the 2014 Pica Slew Stakes at Calder, has to date earned $204,234. Previous Florida-bred stakes-placed winners bred by Farm III Enterprises, in partnership with Off The Hook Partners, include Gelfenstein and Hardrock Eleven. “I'm very happy with the success that we've already had with horses from our Ocala farm,” said Perez. “We started everything from scratch, from the ground up, and we will continue to move forward from here. icente Pérez, que tiene su base en Miami y negocios diversificados en Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica y Florida, pasa mucho tiempo viajando.

“Nosotros no corremos”, aclaró.

Y She's Sensational sigue haciéndole honor a su nombre.

ritics will hand out positive reviews if the Jan. 21 Sunshine Millions at Gulfstream Park approaches the entertainment level of the Nov. 12 dress rehearsal at Gulfstream Park West, a $700,000 showcase billed as “Sunshine Millions Preview Day” that featured seven stakes exclusively for Florida-breds. Each of the stakes were worth $100,000 with three of them designed especially for Sunshine Millions Day – the Classic, Distaff and Turf previews – with the other four stakes written for 2-year-olds: two main-track sprints and two turf miles. The races were held at the former Calder Race Course, providing a sober backdrop for those on hand who remembered that track’s heyday not so long ago. Earlier in the week Churchill Downs Inc., which owns the Miami Gardens property, sold off 61 acres of former barn area for $26.5 million, or $434,426 per acre. In a statement issued by CDI, its president and Chief Operating Officer, William Mudd, said: “This is a step toward right-sizing the footprint needed to conduct our operations at Calder [ie. Gulfstream Park West] and helps promote economic development as well as create much-needed jobs in Miami Gardens and the State of Florida.” The purchaser, EastGroup Properties, is, according to its website, a “real estate investment trust focused on the development, acquisition and operation of industrial properties in major sunbelt markets …” This year’s Preview Day performances will be seen as a contributor to lasting memories, and the strikingly handsome and immensely popular Florida-bred Mr. Jordan played his part as the leading man.

Florida-bred Moment of Delight takes the Distaff Preview
Mr. Jordan’s standing with fans is due to his unusual, near-white coat and his ability to deliver at Gulfstream Park West, where his record rose to three-for-three with an easy, track-record-setting victory over a good field as the 1-2 favorite. The 4-year-old son of Kantharos had shown an ability to win from off the pace before, most notably in his first stakes foray, in November of 2014, when he was fifth after an opening quarter-mile, then rallied to take the Juvenile Sprint by three lengths at GPW. In his next 13 starts, however, Mr. Jordan needed to be in front after an opening quarter if he were to win. That changed in his most recent race, in which he was third after the first two furlongs, then rallied to beat a good field in a $93,000 allowance at Parx on Oct. 17.
44 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016
The new strategy served him and rider Paco Lopez well in the Classic Preview, in which they tracked the early pace from third, launched their rally on the turn and came away from a game and improving Piloting to win as he pleased by 3¾ lengths. Piloting set moderate fractions of :24.04, :47.72 and 1:11.64 for the 1 1/16-mile race before Mr. Jordan grabbed the lead at the mile marker in 1:36.27, coming home in 1:42.52 over a fast track, breaking the 15-yearold mark. The previous standardbearer, Castlebrook, ran the distance in 1:42.55. Eddie Plesa, who trains Mr. Jordan for a partnership that includes his wife, Laurie, as well as David Melin and Leon Ellman, recognizes the development of the once precocious 2-year-old into a professional racehorse. “As he’s matured, as he’s gotten older, he’s learned to rate behind horses. Some horses get better with age [and] some hit their peak at 2 and never go on,” he said, adding that he’s optimistic about Mr. Jordan’s future assignments. Saraguaro, winner of last year’s Classic Preview, finished with interest to get third in this year’s renewal, 2¼ lengths behind the runner-up and 1½ lengths clear of Hy Riverside. JS Bach, who pressed Piloting’s early pace, was fifth, followed by Aces for John, Joshua’s Comprise and Norman’s Hero. Phil and Karen Matthews of Ocala bred Mr. Jordan, selling him as a 2-year-old for $155,000 at the OBS auction in April of 2014. Mr. Jordan – who gets his coloring from his dam, the 13-year-old Cloud Hopping mare Miss Skeetd, via her distance-loving maternal grandsire Vigors – has four younger, unraced siblings. Mr. Jordan’s younger, yearling full brother sold for $80,000 this year at OBS. Saturday’s race was Mr. Jordan’s first in South Florida since he was gelded last spring. “It has a way of calming horses and settling them down. Certainly his demeanor has changed,” said Plesa, who added that his horse is fully recovered from chronic foot problems: While not of the severity to warrant benching, rehabilitation and recovery required racing. “It forced me to run him in races that he wasn’t a dead-fit horse,” Plesa said. “That was the biggest problem. Finally, we got the foot resolved and his last three races were the first races that I felt he was 110%. He’s been doing as good as he can be doing from a fitness level and a soundness level.” All of which bodes well for his upcoming date in the $250,000 Sunshine Millions Classic at 1 1/8 miles. Mr. Jordan raised his record to six wins with four seconds and five thirds from 17 starts. He went over the
half-million dollar mark in the Preview, his bankroll now standing at $513,735. He paid $3 after providing Lopez with his third stakes winner of the day. DISTAFF PREVIEW
It wasn’t easy separating Moment of Delight and You Bought Her in the wagering in the Distaff Preview, and those two were close at the finish as well, with Moment of Delight withstanding her rival’s stretch-long challenge by a half-length. It was a very impressive showing from Moment of Delight, sent off the second choice at 3-2. Taking the lead shortly after the start, she set quick fractions, first putting away Silent Prayer with a quartermile in :22.64, then disposing of R Girls a Charmer after a half in :45.06 before 6-5 favorite You Bought Her ranged up to challenge along the inside. Eddie Castro, cool in the controls, didn’t panic and kept Moment of Delight to her task, stubbornly denying You Bought Her. The winner finished the seven-furlong race in 1:22.65 and paid $5. “She fought all the way down the stretch,” Castro said. You Bought Her had 2½ lengths on third-place longshot Lucky Switch. Winning for Sarah was the last of the four to hit the board, and all four are older fillies and
mares. The 3-year-olds – Sweet Khaleesi, R Kinsley Doll, Silent Prayer and R Girls a Charmer – completed the order of finish in the race for 3-year-olds and up. The field for the Distaff Preview had an interesting twist: Moment of Delight, who lost the first two races of the 2015 Florida Sire Stakes series for 3-year-old fillies before winning the third leg, the Meadow Star, was pitted against R Kinsley Doll, who won the first two legs of this year’s FSS series, the Three Ring and the Jewel Princess, before losing the Meadow Star. Moment of Delight, making her third start and winning her second race for new trainer Stanley Gold, has won five of 18 career races with five seconds and a third. She has earned $428,418 for her owners, the 15-member Pinnacle Racing Stable and Norman Racing. Adam Lazarus, who manages Pinnacle, credited Gold with getting her ready for the Millions Distaff, but, while obviously happy with the result, he made no secret of his wish for the 4-year-old to perform well in major events against open company. “The thing that’s missing from her resume is hitting the board in a graded-stakes race and we’ve got to figure out a way to do that, without interrupting the Sunshine Millions,” he said. “It’s Stan’s call, but from a business standpoint, we’ve got to figure out a way to get her graded black type.”

Thus far her best performance has been a fourth in the Grade 3 Rampart at Gulfstream Park last December. Moment of Delight is a daughter of Prestige Stallions’ A.P. Florida-bred Compelled wins the Juvenile Fillies Turf
Ocala’s Glen Hill Farm had a pleasant day at GPW, breeding two winners: its homebred Compelling in the Juvenile Fillies Turf and Enterprising, winner of the Turf Preview. Now owned by Maxis Stable of San Antonio, Tx., Enterprising ran for his breeder and trainer Tom Proctor – be-
coming a multiple stakes winner that numbered Del Mar’s Grade 3 La Jolla to his credit – prior to his private sale this summer. Since returning to Florida and running out of Mike Maker’s barn, Enterprising finished in the money in all three starts at Gulfstream Park just prior to the Turf Preview, a string that included a second in The Vid and a third in the Mr. Steele, both against open company. The 3-2 favorite for the Turf Preview, Enterprising ran midpack under Tyler Gaffalione while Charlie Mops set the pace with fractions of :24.37 and :50.15, wrapping up his duties with six furlongs in 1:14.35. Charlie Mops put up the white flag as the pack closed in and Enterprising came away clearly best of the latecomers, winning by 1¼ lengths with Little Nick V. second, 2½ lengths ahead of Charlie Mops. Sublime Appeal was fourth, followed by Dreaming of Gold, Thinkinquality, Light the Night and Uncle Vinny. The final time for the 1 1/16 miles over a firm course was 1:45.21. Enterprising paid $5 after winning his seventh race from 25 tries with three seconds and four thirds. He has earned $494,740. Maker’s assistant, a confident Evelio Chavez, was on hand for the Turf Preview: “I knew the horse was training good and that he could win. The key was to break better,” he said. Gaffalione picked up on that recommendation. “They told me to warm him up and make sure he got a good start and he broke alertly and put himself right in the race,” he said. “Midway around the second turn the spot opened up to get him outside and I just followed the horse in front of me. When I put him in the clear he just took off.” The Turf Preview was Enterprising’s fifth career stakes victory: In addition to the La Jolla, he won Del Mar’s Oceanside and at Santa Anita took the Pasadena an Eddie Logan stakes. He is a 5-year-old gelded son of Exclusive Quality and, as a Glen Hill product, Enterprising can boast of a typically strong female family: He’s the son of the 11 year-old A.P. Indy mare Indy Blaze, who is a daughter of Blushing Groom’s daughter Fire the Groom, winner of the Grade 1 Beverly D. and the Group 1 July Cup and Nunthorpe stakes in England. Enterprising’s fourth dam is Kentucky Oaks winner Native Street.

In addition to the Millions Preview races there were four races for 2-year-olds and it could be argued that the most impressive performance of the day was that of Compelled, Glen Hill’s daughter of War Front who rallied from 12 lengths back in the mile event and drew off handily to win by 6½ lengths under Paco Lopez.

Don’t let the time of the race (1:38.47) fool you, this was a very strong performance by the Tom Proctor charge. Third in her first two starts when bumped at Saratoga, then again when eight-wide at Belmont, losing by only a neck, Compelled found the winner’s circle at Laurel, breaking her maiden Oct. 14 by a length at 4-5. She was 7-5 Saturday, and she led the second tier as Southern Sis and Magalie dueled through fractions of :24.30, :48.02 and 1:13.15. Southern Sis did well to hold second by a neck over the closing stakes winner Majestic Gale, but neither was a match for the winner. Compelled paid $4.80. Mutually Benefit, a 9-year-old daughter of Dynaformer, is the dam of Compelled. Mutually Benefit has both a yearling and a weanling by Speightstown and she was bred to American Pharoah this year. She has earned $98,120. JUVENILE TURF

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners’ Squadron made it two for two with his comfortable victory in the Juvenile Turf, scoring by 3¼ lengths over the persistent Front Loaded. The 2-year-old gelded son of Midshipman, trained by Todd Pletcher, beat state-breds in his six-furlong, main-track bow at Gulfstream Park Sept. 25 when he was the favorite, but he wasn’t favored in the Juvenile Turf, that role going to the 8-5 Front Loaded. As he did in his maiden victory, Squadron stalked the leaders from close range early in the race and, when given his cue, hooked a tough one in Salute With Honor, who had led the field through the opening quarter (:23.48), ceded the lead to Apache Brave through the half (:48.55), then came again when Squadron appeared on the scene. Under Eddie Castro’s guidance, Squadron proved too much for a tiring Salute with Honor while Front Loaded – who settled for board placings when pitted against Three Rules in all three Florida Sire Stakes races – rallied to take the place by three-quarters of a length. Bred by Angela Ingenito, Squadron is the third winner from four named foals by Skip the Storm, who was bred to Flat Out this year. Squadron has earned $84,140 and paid $11.20 to his backers. JUVENILE SPRINT
Henry Collazo can’t be faulted for being a little bit sweet on his up-and-coming juvenile Sweetontheladies, especially after the 2-year-old colt by Twirling Candy handily scored by three lengths in the Juvenile Sprint. It was Sweetontheladies’ third win in four starts, the only blemish on that record being his fifth-place show-
ing in the Oct. 1 Armed Forces, which marked his stakes, and turf, debut. Collazo, who trains the gray for Four Horsemen Racing Stable and Lady Lindsay Racing Stables, said an old handicapping axiom came into play in his approach to the 6½-furlong Juvenile Sprint. “Turf to dirt has always been a handicapping preference for most people and it does work,” he said. “I was just a little bit taken back that he didn’t enjoy the surface [at GPW Saturday] that much until about the half-mile pole going into the turn but, man, he’s special. He’s special.” A frontrunner in his previous three starts, Sweetontheladies laid off the pace, racing sixth in the Juvenile Sprint before roaring to the front in the stretch under

R Angel Katelyn rebounded nicely from a runner-up finish in her exit race at Delaware Park, running down favorite Wildcat Kate in the Juvenile Fillies Sprint to post an $18.20 payoff. Owned by Rich Averill’s Averill Racing of Bradenton, Fla., and CCF Racing Stable also of Bradenton and trained by Gerald Bennet, she beat the 3-2 favorite by a half-length, getting the 6½ furlongs in 1:17.30 under Paco Lopez. “The trainer told me, ‘Paco, this is a really, really nice filly. I really like the filly. My filly, she can run,’” Lopez said. Wildcat Kate set the pace before getting collared late, ticking off fractions of :21.81, :44.67 and 1:10.60. R Angel Katelyn was in closest attendance throughout without being threatened by the others and those two continued their dominance to the wire. Rashette was third, 3¾ lengths farther behind, followed by My Lerier, Surprise Wedding, Lirica, Lu Lu Laura, Prove Me and La Zoraya. Bennett blamed himself as much as circumstances for R Angel Katelyn’s previous loss, which came just a bit more than two weeks after her debut. “Her second race, I ran her back in 15 days and I was contemplating scratching her. She got on the rail in the deep going and the horse that beat her had already won three,” Bennett said. “She’s a very nice filly … she’s done everything we asked … she’s got a really good mind. Hopefully we’re going to have a great future with her … win some nice races.” R Angel Katelyn, who was bred by Craig Wheeler of Reddick, Fla., is out of Send for an Angel, who is by Southern Halo. Purchased at OBS for $50,000 last April, she has earned $86,120. ■ LESLIE MARTIN PHOTO

rider Marcos Meneses. He pulled away easily, finishing the race in 1:16.73. He paid $8.20. “I figured a whole lot of speed was going to be there. My instructions [to Meneses] were, if you break on top, don’t give it away, and, if you miss the break, just sit on him and let them go at it and come running late. He’s pretty much a push-button horse. He’s just getting better,” Collazo said. “I was smiling but I was surprised I had to make up that much distance. It was a blessing in disguise, because now we’re more versatile and I think he’s a better horse for it, for sure.” Favored Storming My Way took a brief lead in the stretch as the speed collapsed and held for second, threequarters of a length ahead of Red Crescent. Red Cotton, Thanks God, Two Steps Before and Cinderela El Crome completed the order of finish. Bred by English Ranch Farm, Sweetontheladies is out of the 11-year-old Whataclassybroad, who is by Yankee Gentleman. Equine Care
Importance of Colostrum By HEATHER SMITH THOMAS
T
It is very important for the foal to nurse as soon as possible after birth.
50 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016
he mare’s first milk contains ingredients that are crucial to the health and survival of the newborn foal. Colostrum serves as a stimulant to get the GI tract moving (to help the foal pass his first bowel movements and get rid of the meconium), and contains a creamy fat that is high in energy and easily digested. Especially important are the antibodies in colostrum, providing passive transfer from the dam to protect the foal until his own immune system can start producing its own antibodies. Thus it is very important for the foal to nurse as soon as possible after birth. Peter Sheerin, DVM (Nandi Veterinary Associates, New Freedom, Pennsylvania) says the mare produces antibodies to pathogens she is exposed to in her environment. “This is one reason many farms request that foaling mares come to the facility at least 30 days prior to foaling. This will allow the mare to develop antibodies to local pathogens, to help protect the newborn foal,” he explains. “In addition, pre-foaling vaccinations we give mares will stimulate production of antibodies that will hopefully appear in the colostrum. Owners should vaccinate mares against diseases that might be a concern on their farm, and should do this 4 to 6 weeks ahead of the mare’s expected foaling date,” he says. This would give maximum opportunity for peak levels of antibodies in her colostrum. “The foal needs to consume the colostrum within the first couple hours of life. When a foal is first born, the antibodies can cross the intestinal mucosa and be absorbed. Once the foal starts ingesting colostrum, the ability to absorb these large antibodies decreases. This does not decrease in a linear fashion, however.
EquineCare_Nutrition_Colostrum.qxp_Florida Horse_template 11/18/16 10:13 AM Page 51
Even though the absorption rate is 100 percent at birth and by 24 hours meal before it gets up. “This recommendation is based on evidence that is zero, you can’t draw a straight line from 100 percent to zero and foals, during the process of seeking the udder, can acquire bacteria that say that at 12 hours it’s 50 percent. It drops off much more quickly go into the intestinal tract and cross what we call the open gut. On a than that once the foal begins to nurse,” says Sheerin. This is nature’s farm where we experienced a large Salmonella outbreak, we began this way to “shut the door” to opportunistic pathogens that might also cross process of getting colostrum into the foals before they nurse the mare, through the gut lining. It’s always a race between the pathogens and along with washing the mare and having a clean udder before the foal the protective antibodies, so horse owners need to get as much nurses. After the mare passes her placenta there’s a lot of contamination because mares defecate during stage two labor; there is bacteria on her colostrum into the foal as early as possible. “The foals we’re most concerned about are the ones that don’t nurse and on the afterbirth. After the udder is cleaned up, as soon as the mare sufficiently, and the compromised foals that don’t nurse aggressively all gets up, we milk the mare (4 to 8 ounces) and while the foal is still lying the time. The amount of antibodies they absorb might be too low. It’s im- down feed him from a bottle,” says Madigan. Once the foal tries to stand, he is concentrating on trying to get up and portant to check IgG levels on these foals, anytime from 12 to 24 hours after birth. At 12 hours it may not be at the level we want. If it’s too low may not be as cooperative. But the suckle reflex is very strong right after we may check it again at 24 hours, or we may consider running plasma birth and foals will readily suck a bottle if it’s offered, before they get up. to that foal. If we check at 12 hours and get the results fast enough, we Then the foal will generally go ahead and get up and do more nursing on may just tube the foal with some more colostrum, while he may have a chance to absorb some of it. This would be less expensive than the plasma. But you’d need to have a source of good colostrum available, like frozen banked colostrum (or another mare that just foaled, with good colostrum),” he explains. John Madigan, DVM (University of California, Davis) says there are many things colostrum does locally in the gut to help the foal, besides providing the antibodies that can slip through the gut lining into the bloodstream and lymph system to stimulate systemic immune response. “Colostrum is a natural laxative. It also contains glucose and energy from fat that gives the foal more strength to stand and nurse, or deal with inclement weather (without becoming so chilled) or other stresses,” says Madigan. Colostrum also contains some other types of antibodies, IgA, that do not cross through the gut lining; they stay in the tract to fight off pathogens that to this is knowing that the foal received the cause diarrhea. These can be helpful even after gut closure occurs and colostrum. “The big advantage

Equine Care his own, but the owner is assured that the foal received antibodies in a timely fashion. It may not be enough, but will certainly give the foal a good start in the proper direction. Madigan has found that a number of farms have done this for several years, quite successfully, and feel it has helped reduce their incidence of disease in newborns. Usually a person can readily obtain anywhere 4 to 8 ounces of colostrum from the mare. Madigan recommends
Mare Milker Makes Life Easier at Foaling Time
An innovative “breast pump” for mares simplifies the task of obtaining colostrum for a newborn foal, or milking a mare for any reason. The Udderly EZ mare milker is a trigger-operated pump, held with one hand. A soft, smooth flange fits over the teat and seats snugly against the udder, with a bottle attached to the bottom. A few squeezes of the trigger create vacuum and suction—and a few more pulls on the trigger quickly fill the bottle with milk. This is much easier than hand milking or using a modified syringe to create suction to aspirate milk. Some maiden mares with small teats are hard to get hold of with your fingers, and this pump works no matter what size the teats are. It’s also much quicker—a big factor when dealing with a nervous mare. You can stand beside the mare, well away from her hind feet. You can stay safe, using the pump, keeping your other hand on the mare’s hip, moving with her instead of being kicked. It doesn’t make any noise that might spook the mare, and there’s no chance for spilling the milk. This has proven very useful for obtaining colostrum or for milking out a mare with mastitis, or milking out the dam of a foal that has neonatal isoerythrolysis (and feeding the foal an alternate source of colostrum) until her colostrum is gone and she’s producing regular milk. Mares with mastitis are hard to milk, due to pain. With this device you can milk them swiftly, and can also reach under from the opposite side, to milk out the painful side from a safer position. The Udderly EZ mare milker has been in use for more than 10 years, and now there is a newer electric version that makes it easier and faster. It has an adjustable suction vacuum and can draw milk from both teats at once if desired. The silicon inserts are gentle on the teats, so the mare doesn’t mind. Another plus is that this automatic milker is much quieter than other electric milkers and is specially adapted with longer air tubing—so the electric pump doesn’t have to be in the stall with the mare and foal. This new version does the same job in half the time, and is gentle enough to use on mares with painful mastitis. 52 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016
use of the Ultimate EZ Milker mare milker, a hand-held, trigger operated pump with bottle attached. This makes the milking much easier, faster, and safer and it’s less irritating to the mare than using your fingers because there is no friction on the teat. The bottle can be filled within seconds, and then it can be detached from the pump, a nipple put on it, and the colostrum fed to the foal. “While the foal is still lying there, and starting tongue movement and suck reflex, we feed him from a bottle. He may have tried to get up but hasn’t gained his feet, yet has already started making sucking motions. We just put the bottle in his mouth. We found that these foals take a bottle very readily, before they stand up,” says Madigan. “The big advantage to this is knowing that the foal received the colostrum,” says Sheerin. “What happens occasionally is that mare owners have been up for several nights in a row waiting for the mare to foal, and they’re exhausted. The foal gets up and heads toward the mare’s udder and may be playing around back there, and maybe sounds like he’s nursing, but no one actually checks to make sure he is actually nursing. Or, they watch the foal and it latches on and nurses a bit then lies down and goes to sleep. The exhausted owners then go back to bed and don’t know how much the foal actually received or how much it nurses after that. So the advantage of bottle feeding the foal would be the assurance regarding how much the foal actually got, initially,” says Sheerin. “The downside of bottle feeding these babies is that you have to be careful to make sure they don’t aspirate any of the fluid and end up with pneumonia. There would be some risk, especially if the nipple flows too fast. Generally speaking, people are not very patient. The foal starts to nurse and is not nursing fast enough, so they squeeze the bottle to get more into him faster, and he may get some in his windpipe.” If a foal for some reason is unable to nurse the mare or a bottle, then you definitely need to assist. “In these instances we’d need to pass a stomach tube and give colostrum that way, after milking the mare, if the foal is not so compromised that he has no suckle reflex or cannot swallow. A severely compromised foal may have ileus (the intestines are not moving) and needs to be on IV fluids rather than being fed orally. With these foals, tubing them may actually make things worse,” explains Sheerin. ■

he sound of thundering hooves exploding on the racetrack was something that was a routine part of jockey and exercise rider Joe Mileni’s life. However, his world was transformed on March 4, 2002 at Gulfstream Park, when an explosion of a different kind took place inside of his own body. An aneurysm, in the athlete’s brain, would land Mileni in a coma and leave him paralyzed on his left side. “I was just hanging on,” said Mileni. “My hands were clamped on the reins. They had to cut the reins to get them out of my hands.” The unsettling incident found Mileni being carried for more than a mile around the track. Fortunately, a quick thinking outrider and several vigilant exercise riders were able to contain the situation until help arrived. It took three men to get Mileni off the horse and into the ambulance.
“When they took me off the racetrack, I went straight to surgery,” said Mileni. “They performed a crainiotomy to stop the bleeding. It was the main artery on the right side that blew out. I don’t remember anything about the hospital. I woke up in a nursing home a month later. I couldn’t move, talk or eat. I had to learn how to swallow again.” More than 12 years later, Mileni’s amazing journey found him back in the irons, riding horses as part of his

physical therapy regimen at the Equus for Humanity Riding Center in Southwest Ranches. Mileni has been working with Equulibrium’s Dr. Jane Burrows, and the benefits he’s derived from partnering with a horse as part of his physical therapy have been markedly significant.

“I’m a physical therapist and I do physical therapy,” said Burrows. “I use horses in my practice because they’re very efficient in addressing difficulties that my clients have for many reasons. I checked him out. I did an evaluation. He’s done a marvelous job in keeping himself in good shape.” The aneurysm caused Mileni to lose the left half of the visual field in both of his eyes, and is known better by its clinical name Heronymous Hemianopsia, said Burrows. “He has very little function of his left arm; he’s able to walk but uses a crutch, it’s affected his left leg too,” said Burrows. “If you have an aneurysm that blows, there’s a very small chance that you’re going to survive it. There’s about a five percent survival rate, and most of the time they don’t have a result that’s workable. What he’s always wanted was to be able to get back on a horse.” Its life’s permutations that have allowed Mileni to make those necessary adjustments, despite the adversity and challenges that would have most people making concessions, but his attitude and willingness to adapt are something to be marveled. Mileni had been in an assisted living facility for four years, and relies on someone to help him every day. As soon as he was released from the facility, he would have people taking him to Calder, so he could be around the horses. He misses riding in races and the environment of the racetrack. The jockey who was born in New Jersey and grew up in Fort Erie, Ont., Canada, got his start walking hots at the racetrack, and would later ride at Woodbine, Arlington and Calder. Now he rides a Quarter Horse-Draft cross. Dually, a retired dressage mount, who was donated by a friend to the facility, said Burrows. Mileni initially began the sessions at Equus riding a smaller horse known as Traveler. “We have a mount that’s good for him,” said Burrows. “The mount is large and wide enough, and yet he provides the movement that Joey needs to improve his functional status.” Working with Dually has improved the strength of Mileni’s core muscles. It’s a partnership that has yielded positive results. “When Joey first came to us, he wasn’t sitting upright,” said Burrows. “He had what we call a Kyphosis in his back, where he was bent forward in his upper back. He was kind of shrunken down, but since he’s been working with us, we’ve been able to strengthen his back tremendously, more so than I would be able to without a horse, which is why I work with horses.” A medical clinic, Equulibrium places an emphasis on physical and occupational therapy, said Burrows, whose partner in the practice, Dr. Giselle Faubel, is a psychologist.
60 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016
“She uses horses in her practice too,” said Burrows. “We’re the medical model. We’re specialists in using horses to address needs like Joey has; the strengthening of the body, working with visual integration, working to regain as much function as possible, whether it’s a birth injury or an acquired injury. We don’t teach riding here. We’re a medical clinic.” Mileni is an independent rider, primarily because he has the motor memory to stay in the saddle, said Burrows. And although his left arm remains paralyzed, Mileni does have some movement in his left hand and feet. His mobility has also improved markedly thanks to his work with Dr. Burrows, although he still uses a cane and wheelchair. It’s been through Dr. Burrows’s practice and innovative thinking, and Mileni’s positive attitude that they’ve been able to transform and improve the quality of his life. “When I first started out there, the left side of my

EL Potro
Tres Razones
D
66 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016

The FTBOA partnered with the Ocala/Marion County Association of Realtors for a toy drive for the Marion County Boys and Girls Club. The toy drives runs through Dec. 15 and toys can be dropped off at the FTBOA offices; the Ocala Marion County Board of Realtors at 3105 NE 14th St, Ocala, FL 34470; Showcase Properties of Central Florida, 5780 SW 20th ST, Ocala, FL 34470; Southern Charm Realty, 1008 NE 2nd ST Ocala, FL 34470 and at Homes to Ranches, 2455 NW 44th AVE Ocala, FL 34482. CAREER DAY SPARKS EQUINE INTEREST
FTBOA participated in a career day at Belleview High School in Marion County on Nov. 15. The school already raises horses for sale at Ocala Breeders’ Sales so the career day was a natural fit to promote the thoroughbred industry. FTBOA’s Sally Moehring and intern Autumn Charley were on hand to share the types of jobs and careers available in the industry, what education and hands on experience is required and the economic impact the industry makes to the county and state leading to abundant equine job opportunities. STATE PR PROS LEARN INDUSTRY
The Florida Public Relations Association Board of Directors hosted their board meeting at the FTBOA offices on Nov. 18. The FPRA is dedicated to developing public relations practitioners who, through ethical and standardized practices, enhance the public relations profession in Florida. The Association chose Ocala for its quarterly meetings. The FTBOA showcased why Ocala is the Horse Capital of the World and why thoroughbreds are economic drivers important to the state. A tour of the Florida thoroughbred museum and the Florida Equine Communications print shop were highlights of the day. EQUINE TOWN HALL VIEWS FUTURE
The FTBOA participated in the Florida Chamber Foundation Town Hall focused on the equine industry in Marion County in November. The event was hosted by the Community Foundation and Ocala/Marion County Equine Alliance with the goal of mak-

ing sure the state of Florida is aware of future equine needs in Marion County. The town hall meetings are being held in each of Florida’s 67 counties to engage business and community leaders in identifying key trends and the factors that can drive their regional economy. With Florida being the third largest equine population in the U.S., equines are an important part of that discussion. EQUINE SUMMIT PROMOTES TO YOUTH
FTBOA and Seminole Feed sponsored an Equine Summit at the College of Central Florida on Nov. 18. The event hosts more than 200 high school and college students, Ag teacher advisors and industry professionals. The focus was a trade show, networking program and special breakout sessions. Sessions included equine nutrition with Equine PhD candidate Leigh Ann Skurupey, biosecurity with Associate Professor at CCF Dr. Marsha Pidherney, equine insurance with Rhonda Mack and Beth Leaird of Jerry Parks Insurance and manure management with ag extension. In addition, the Summit included an industry professional “speed dating” in which equine pros rotated in quick rounds to various student groups sharing their equine background, education, current position and what they see for the future of the equine industry. They also discussed growth areas for the industry. Sally Moehring, Autumn Charley and Tammy Gantt of FTBOA participated in the trade show to network with students and Gantt served on the facilitator round-table. ■

DRIFTING Out
Adieu, 2016 by Mike Mullaney
Managing Editor for Florida Equine Communications
E
arly last month, not long after it became clear who would win the Race of the Year, the victor’s camp, surrounded by the faithful and the fawning, distributed praise and gratitude to all contributors, with the victor saying: “They can’t call you a superstar unless we (sic) win it. Like Secretariat … he would not have a bust at the track, at Belmont Park [unless he swept the 1973 Triple Crown].” That the wording was a bit fragmented, that Belmont Park’s homage to the big horse is actually a full-body statue … that’s of little consequence, but what resonated in that moment of a freewheeling speech, delivered at 3:01 in the morning of Nov. 9, is the fact that the presidentelect is at least conversational about horse racing. Doris Kearns Goodwin hasn’t weighed in on this one, yet, but presidential history tells us that FDR is the most recent chief executive to show a fan’s interest in racing. Floridians, once again, played a large part in determining races of all kinds. The older homebreds, Live Oak Plantation’s World Approval and Hal Queen’s Sheer Drama, took Grade 1 events, the former winning Monmouth’s United Nations and the latter Keeneland’s Madison. The 2-year-old fillies, Speedway Stable’s Noted and Quoted (Del Mar’s Chandelier) and another Live Oak homebred, Victory to Victory (Woodbine’s Natalma), also beat open company in Grade 1s. The sprint division, as usual, was heavily impacted by Floridians. Patricia Generazio’s homebred Pure Sensation was sensational in turf sprints and Stallwalkin’ Dude – a modestly priced claimer before trainer and co-owner David Jacobson turned him into a multiple stakes winner – joined the $1 million earners’ club with his victory in the Bold Ruler Handicap. Distinguished at 2 while racing on opposite coasts two years ago, Catalina Red and Calculator came back at 4 to thrill the Derby Day crowd: The Tampa star Catalina Red eked out a narrow victory over the California-based Calculator in the Churchill Downs Handicap. Victory of global significance nearly came to XY Jet when, after establishing his superiority at Gulfstream’s winter meet, he was beaten a neck in the final strides of the $2 million Golden Shaheen in Dubai. Jacks or Better Farm’s homebred 3-year-old Awesome
Banner began the year with graded-stakes victories in Gulfstream’s Swale and Hutcheson, and closed it out with wins in the Florida Sire Stakes’ final two events for his age group, the Prized and Foolish Pleasure. Among the older runners, the re-emergence of the 4year-old, Mr. Jordan, is noteworthy. Handled with wisdom and patience, he bounced back from a variety of physical problems to take last month’s Sunshine Millions Classic Preview. As always, the precocity of state-bred 2-year-olds, as showcased by the FSS, made for a great marketing tool. Three Rules, a homebred colt from Shade Tree Thoroughbreds, swept his divisional races and Curtis Mikkelsen’s filly Cajun Delta Dawn nearly did the same, losing the finale by a length to Donald Dizney’s promising Dude Fantasy. CDD subsequently was runner-up against open company to another Florida-bred, California-based Shane’s Girlfriend, in the $400,000 Delta Downs Princess. A long van ride to Kentucky preceding his flight to California compromised Three Rules’ chances in the BC Juvenile: He finished sixth but was good enough to whip two Grade 1-winning Californians on their homefield. In addition to Three Rules, Pilcher’s foaling station also produced Derek Adrian and Noble Quest, 1,2 in Puerto Rico’s Angel Cordero Stakes. Derek Adrian is six for six and, with each victory, he’s shown a new dimension.
There’s plenty of reason to be fascinated by upcoming events in 2017.
70 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016
If a Person of the Year were to be nominated, a strong case could be made for Ocala-based trainer Mark Casse. After suffering the loss of his father, Norm, he collected his eighth Sovereign Award; was inducted into Canadian racing’s Hall of Fame; furthered his credentials for induction into the American version by sending out World Approval and Victory to Victory to their Grade 1s; managed the reinvigorated Awesome Banner during his FSS victories, and trained Classic Empire to his win in the BC Juvenile. That victory made him the early favorite for next year’s Kentucky Derby, and a win in that race is on a dwindling list of Casse’s bucket-list items. There’s plenty of reason to be fascinated by upcoming events in 2017. ■

WAYS OF The wesT
The Boggle Threshold
N
by Gary West Gary West is an award winning turf writer who has covered horse racing for more than 30 years in many publications including The Dallas Morning News and Ft. Worth StarTelegram. He currently writes for ESPN.com and several other publications on a freelance basis.
ot since Ghostzapper has the sport seen anything like this. When Arrogate won the Travers by more than 13 lengths, so extraordinary was the performance that it sent the imagination soaring beyond the boggle threshold. That was the Blue Moon Diamond of racing; it was as if from the clouds a Jack descended dauntlessly on a beanstalk and landed in the winner’s circle at Saratoga; instead of uttering a riddle, a Sphinx made a bold and audacious assertion. That Travers was the sort of performance that comes along rarely, a Halley’s Comet sort of flash across the sky, but might not be seen ever again by the same eyes. But it was. Arrogate did it again at Santa Anita, winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic in what was arguably the best performance of the season. Yes, hard as it was to believe, Arrogate’s Classic, where he raced wide and had to run down a champion in the stretch to wrench free a victory that had seemed secure, surpassed even his Travers. And in doing that, Arrogate became the first horse since Ghostzapper to put together consecutive mind-bogglers. Could Arrogate do it yet again? Could the $12 million Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 28 entice him and his connections to travel to Gulfstream Park for what could be, on many levels, an historic race? That will be one of the most intriguing questions of the new season because an affirmative answer could have significant ramifications. And if Arrogate can reach the boggle threshold again in his next start, he’ll be the first North American horse in 20 years to do so in three consecutive races — or at least the first I can find since Formal Gold in 1997. (For purposes of this discussion, the boggle threshold is 120, and a mind-boggling level of performance is defined as an effort that earns a speed figure of at least 120 on the Beyer scale.) Precious few horses ever surpass the boggle threshold, and those that do usually return exhausted from their journey into the mesosphere. Frosted, for example, won the most recent Metropolitan Handicap with one of those mind-boggling efforts. And from there he declined steadily, winning the Whitney in a solid, but unspectacular effort, then finishing third in the Woodward and, finally, coming home sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The pattern wasn’t unfamiliar. Three weeks after Not Surprising, a great Florida-bred of the 1990s, won the Forego by four lengths, he narrowly won the Vosburgh and then,
Pegasus changes everything
74 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2016
having peaked in August, he finished fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Not Surprising didn’t win again until May of the following year. After Florida-bred Silver Charm won the Kentucky Cup by 17 lengths, he lost five of his next eight races. The point is simply this: While few horses ever surpass the boggle threshold, even fewer come right back and duplicate such superlative efforts. Doing so suggests great talent. Easy Goer, Sunday Silence, Artax, Best Pal, Skip Away— they all, for example, ran consecutive mind-bogglers. With his victory in the Classic, Arrogate undoubtedly earned championship honors, making his name somewhat ironic, for an Eclipse Award is certainly justified. And with another mind-boggler, perhaps in the Pegasus, he could signal the dawning of a new day, a day that looks and feels as if it belongs in the sport’s glorious past. To string together three such performances would be downright anachronistic. You know the names of the horses that always raced with the wind at their backs, the great horses of the 1960s and 1970s; they could do it, but since then, only Formal Gold. And after he defeated Skip Away by 5 1/2 lengths to win the Woodward, the third effort in that triptych of superlativeness, Formal Gold never raced again. California Chrome probably gave the best effort of his career when second, a half-length back in the Classic: He finished 10 3/4 lengths ahead of Keen Ice in third, 11 1/2 lengths ahead of Hoppertunity and 15 3/4 lengths ahead of Melatonin. After his misguided world tour of 2015, California Chrome developed this year into a great and admirable exemplar of reliability. A stallion career awaits, but he’ll race one more time, in the Pegasus. With a victory, he would surpass the great Orfevre ($19 million) to become the world’s all-time richest racehorse. Highland Reel, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf, is also a possibility for the Pegasus. His trainer, Aidan O’Brien, speculated that Highland Reel’s versatility and talent would enable the colt to adapt to any surface. And so already the Pegasus has profoundly affected the sport. California Chrome will be around for one more. Perhaps Arrogate, too. And maybe Highland Reel. During the first six months of 2016, 65 graded stakes open to older males offered purses averaging $278,307. During the same period, 51 graded stakes open to 3-year-old males offered purses averaging $367,647. But Pegasus changes everything. ■
