Hopes and Expectations

T

he early months of any year are always filled with the hopes and expectations and the Florida thoroughbred industry is no different. We are looking forward to the foals of 2020 as they’re Brock Sheridan born at thoroughbred farms throughout Florida, excited Editor-in-Chief about potential and planned breedings, and of course we Florida Equine Communications JOHN D. FILER PHOTO are excited to see new and existing progeny at the tracks in Florida and throughout the world. January also marks a time when many begin to look toward the first Saturday in May and the potential stars in the 2020 Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade 1) at Churchill Downs. Breeders, owners, trainers, fans and horsemen of all types have seen those with big juvenile years in 2019 and all are looking forward to the pre-Triple Crown season of stakes races at tracks throughout the globe that will help everyone further clarify their favorites and future choices. Florida-bred fans have plenty to be excited about with several juvenile stakeswinners during 2019 that with several appear to be on their way to the trail to the Kenjuvenile stakes-winners during 2019 tucky Derby. Among the most that appear to be on their way to the promising Florida-bred trail to the Kentucky Derby. juveniles is Thousand Words, the recent winner of the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity at Los Alamitos Race Course on Dec. 7 for the Hall of Fame trainer and five-time Derby-winner Bob Baffert. By the late Pioneerof the Nile out of the multiple stakes-winning mare Pomeroy’s Pistol, by Pomeroy, it wasn’t so much that the bay colt won the Los Alamitos Futurity, but it was more the way that he won the mileand-one-sixteenth event. First, it was his first time around two turns. Equally impressive was his tenacity in deep stretch, a quality seldom found in young horses making their second career start. After going four-wide on the first turn, Thousand Words, who races for the Albaugh Family Stables LLC and Spendthrift Farm LLC, sat just behind the early lead of High Velocity until midway on the far turn when he went up to challenge his stablemate. He collared High Velocity at the top of the stretch when favorite Anneau d’Or ranged up to his outside and appeared to pass Thousand Words as they went by the final furlong

fans have plenty “Florida-bred to be excited about

marker. But Thousand Words fought back against Anneau d’Or and won by a half-length in 1:43.19. And don’t let the Grade 2 status or the Los Alamitos Race Course location discourage you away from the performance by the Hardacre Farm-bred because it was not at Santa Anita, Del Mar, Belmont, Churchill or any other major race track. Since the race moved to Los Alamitos in 2014 from Hollywood Park, where it was the Hollywood Futurity then CashCall Futurity, winners of the race include Dortmund, Mor Spirit, Mastery, McKinzie and Improbable. Another Florida-bred with possible Derby credentials is dual Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes-winner Chance It. Trained by rising star conditioner Saffie Joseph Jr. at his base in South Florida for Shooting Star Thoroughbreds LLC, Chance It won the $100,000 FTBOA FSS Dr. Fager over six furlongs in early August and the $400,000 FTBOA FSS In Reality at a mile-and-a-sixteenth Sept. 28, which was the final start of his 2-year-old campaign. Several things also make Chance It a legitimate Derby contender. He won his first race by more than nine lengths at Gulfstream Park in June, logging a 91 Beyer Speed Figure that was the nation’s best among 2-year-olds at the time. He repeated the 91 figure in his next two starts while winning the FTBOA FSS Dr. Fager and when second to Liam’s Lucky Charm in the $200,000 FTBOA FSS Affirmed at seven furlongs on Aug. 31. He did not start in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita in November but only because his management team decided to rest him over the winter to save bullets for the Kentucky Derby road. By Currency Swap out of Vagabon Diva, by Pleasantly Perfect, Chance It was bred in the Sunshine State by Bett Usher. Other Florida-breds who might make the Derby trail include Collusion Illusion, winner of the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar Aug. 10 but did not finish the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita on Sept. 27. And there may be other Florida-bred stars by the likes of Florida stallions Adios Charlie, First Dude, Khozan, Brethren, Treasure Beach (GB), The Big Beast and others who are out there but have yet to show their Floridabred “Race ‘em or chase ‘em” talents. ■

Florida-bred stakes winners Curlin’s Honor and Caribou Club locked up in the final furlong of the $150,000 Artie Schiller Stakes Nov. 9 at Aqueduct and they took their fight to the finish with Curlin’s Honor getting a neck advantage over his fellow Floridian under the wire. The Artie Schiller presented a field of nine 3-year-olds and older who raced a mile on the turf. Coming into the Artie Schiller off of a win against high level optional claimers going a mile-and-one-sixteenth on the Woodbine turf on Oct. 6 and a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Bold Venture Stakes over six-and-a-half furlongs on Woodbine’s Tapeta main track on Sept. 14, Curlin’s Honor was let go with generous odds of 7-1. Neshaminy Stakes-winner Abiding Star and Mohawk Stakes-runner-up Voodoo Song took the field into the first turn while Curlin’s Honor was pinched back shortly after the start and forced to race second to last around the bend and more than 11 lengths off the pace down the backstretch in the strung out field. Abiding Star and Voodoo Song clicked off gradual fractions of :23.62 for the first two furlongs, the half-mile in :47.09 and six furlongs in 1:11.27 as the pair led the field into the stretch and the gap from first to last narrowed to less than six lengths. Voodoo Song suddenly spurted clear but was quickly joined by Caribou Club on the outside

with Curlin’s Honor appearing on the rail with another abrupt move. Caribou Club had the advantage momentarily before Curlin’s Honor and jockey Joel Rosario went by them on the inside and finished up in 1:35.11 on the firm turf. Caribou Club was another three lengths in front of 2-1 favorite Frontier Market in third. Just Howard, Golden Brown, Voodoo Song, Gidu (Ire), Dr. Edgar and Abiding Star completed the order of finish. "He put in a nice big run on the inside,” Rosario said of Curlin’s Honor. “I just wanted to save some ground and we ended up in perfect position along the rail. High On Gin Lites Up My Trusty Cat Stakes Jerry Caroom’s High On Gin bounced back from an off the board finish against Grade 2 company at Keeneland Oct. 9, and returned to Louisiana to win the $100,000 My Trusty Cat Stakes at Delta Downs at odds of 20-1, returning $43 to win. exploded and was full of run. I was away from everybody in the beginning of the race and when I got to the turn, I had to wait a little bit, but I got lucky everything opened up and he went on." Curlin’s Honor is trained by Mark Casse for John C. Oxley of Tulsa, Okla., and Michael T. Hall’s Breeze Easy LLC of Ocala, Fla. He won for the fifth time in 16 starts and the $82,500 first-place check pushed him to $349,345 in career revenues. He paid $17.40 to win. Curlin’s Honor began the year with a seventh-place finish in the Mar. 9 Stymie Stakes on dirt at Aqueduct before Casse switched him to turf for the Grade 3 Jacques Carter Stakes at Woodbine in May and he responded with a third-place finish. Casse assistant Jamie Begg said the colt has thrived since committing to turf where he has since had three thirds and a second in graded stakes. "He looks like a dirt horse. We came in the winter for the Stymie and it came up tough, but it was the last try [on dirt]," Begg said. "Last year, he ran at Belmont going seven-eighths [on turf in the Paradise Creek] and just lost to Gidu. We thought maybe a flat mile on the grass was his cup of tea. It seemed to work out and Joel knew how the race was going to set up for him. He made a good plan and executed it perfectly." Curlin’s Honor is by Curlin out of Franscat, by Stormin Fever and he was bred in Florida by Miller Racing LLC. Oxley and Breeze Easy purchased Curlin’s Honor for $1.5 million out of the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Old Sale from the consignment of Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds as an agent. Curlin’s Honor is a half-brother to stakes-winners Swinger’s Party and Hubba Shake and stakes-placed Powhatan County. Franscat also has an unnamed yearling filly by Violence. ■

Angie Draper

Angie Draper

Angie Draper passed away peacefully with family at her side on Oct. 22, 2019, in Tallahassee, Fla. Born and named Angeline Laura Postma on Feb. 21, 1929, in Grand Rapids, Mich., Angie spent her teens in Holland, Mich., and then made Florida her home for 70 years. Angie's love of all animals, especially horses; her artistic talent; and fierce determination led to a 50-year career as a commissioned equine artist. She was internationally renowned for her paintings of Florida-bred national racing champions including Carry Back, Rough 'n Tumble and Affirmed as well as top thoroughbred racehorses in the US, Panama and Mexico. Her work has been featured in the National Museum of Racing in Saratoga Springs, NY., and appeared in many equine magazines. She also illustrated Man o' War by Walter Farley and several books in Farley's Black Stallion series for young adults. Many of Angie's oil paintings of outstanding Florida thoroughbreds are displayed in the Hall of Fame at the Florida Thoroughbred Owners' and Breeders' Association headquarters in Ocala, Fla., as well as numerous private collections. She spoke to students and sketched horses at numerous school Library Week events and supported the Black Stallion Literacy Project. As a teenager in Holland, Angie worked as a stable hand so she could ride and show borrowed horses. She moved to Sarasota, Fla., in 1948 to study at the Ringling School of Art, working her way through Ringling as both a lifeguard and housecleaner. She credited her favorite high school art teacher with nurturing her desire to illustrate horse books and paint horses. Survivors include daughters, Patricia A. Draper, Tallahassee, Fla., Jean L. Mills (Gene), Lithia, Fla.; and brother, Arnold Postma, Sarasota, Fla. She was preceded in death by mother, Anna Beld Gray; and father, Harold F. Postma; brothers, Charles, Herbert, Alfred and Earl; and former husband, Arthur D. Draper. ■ 10 THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2020

Firenze Fire Takes Easier Route to Fabulous Strike Victory Trainer Jason Servis had his Florida-bred star Firenze Fire cross entered for the Grade 3 Fall Highweight Handicap to be run Nov. 29 at Aqueduct and in the $200,000 Fabulous Strike Stakes at Penn National on Nov. 27 and it appears he made the right choice when he sent Firenze Fire to the latter. Fresh off of a fifth-place finish behind winner Mitole in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita on Nov. 2, Firenze Fire appeared to appreciate the easier company in the Fabulous Strike. Sent to the post as the heavy 1-5 favorite in the six furlong Fabulous Strike, Firenze Fire and jockey Irad Oritz Jr., sat behind a torrid pace set by 44-1 outsider Dupree and Midtowncharlybrown, who won this race last year, as they sprinted the first quarter-mile in :21.69. Despite the quick pace however, Firenze Fire moved to the front around the far turn and led the seven other older horses by more than three lengths when they turned for home. Dupree, Midtowncharlybrown, Midnightcharly and Jumpmaster were four abreast in second but were never a threat as Firenze Fire finished the six furlongs in 1:09.33 on the fast track and four-and-a-half lengths clear of Midnightcharly in second. Jumpmaster was third while Midtowncharlybrown was fourth. Vorticity, Lewisfield, Dupree and

the backstretch but the field began to bunch closer together moving into the far turn. Odds-on favorite Gone Glimmering momentarily took the lead in the far turn but High On Gin was in full stride in pursuit before getting a length lead on her rivals as they turned for home. There were no serious challengers after that as High On Gin pulled away with ease on her way to a five-and-one-quarter-length victory over Trixie Racer in second with Gone Glimmering third. They were followed in order by Sebs Princess, Wheres Mom, Green Destiny, Thirsty My Friend, Tizsfranderella and Majestic Edge. The final time was 1:42.75. High On Gin has now won three of four career starts and the $60,000 first-place check in the My Trusty Cat pushed her career bankroll to $110,244. High On Gin was reunited with jockey Devon Magnon in the My Trusty Cat, with whom they were undefeated in two starts in Louisiana before she went to Keeneland for the Jessamine Stakes (G2). Magnon and High On Gin won a maiden special weight at Evangeline Downs on Aug. 21 in her career debut and then the $60,000 Happy Ticket Stakes on turf at Louisiana Downs on Sept. 7. Trainer Carl Deville then ran High On Gin in the Jessamine where she finished a compromised tenth going a mile-and-one-sixteenth on grass. In the My Trusty Cat, High On Gin and Magnon were in no hurry early as they sat about six-and-a-half lengths off of frontrunning Thirsty My Friend, who took them through a quarter-mile in :22.93 and the half-mile in :47.70. Thirsty My Friend and Majestic Edge led the field by as much as three lengths down

Jackson C. Dudley II

FILE PHOTO

Jackson Dudley, age 69, of Ocala, Fla., died peacefully on Oct. 20, 2019 after a noble battle against progressive supranuclear palsy. Born in Evansville, Ind., he moved to Ocala from Stillwater, Okla., in 1970. Jack served in the US National Guard, was a member of Grace Christian Family Church of Ocala, Florida Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, and the Elks. Jack was the son of the late Jackson C. Dudley who co-owned Florida’s first Kentucky Derby winner, Needles, along with Bonnie M. Heath, and was a skilled and accomplished horse trainer. He was also a leather smith, making gorgeous custom leather saddles and other leather items. Jack played professional golf for several years, was on the Florida Senior Tour and was a member of the USGA. He was well known for his amazing golf game and helping others learn to golf, and particularly fitting their clubs. Jack was a kindhearted, level spirited individual, and Jack Dudley a dreamer. He was always working on the next great invention. His solid, steadfast, kind demeanor, and welcoming smile will be missed by all. Survivors include his wife, Kathie Rossi Dudley; loving daughters, Jessica Dudley and Jackie Jo Ramputi (husband, Greg Ramputi Jr); two grandsons, Jackson and Dylan Ramputi; and a sister, Donna Harrison, of Stillwater, Okla. ■ $75,000 Buffalo Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Nov. 30. A field of eight 3-year-olds went six furlongs in the Buffalo Man. Florida-bred Shivaree had moderate success in four starts over the summer at Gulfstream Park including a fourth-place finish in the $200,000 Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes Affirmed won by Liam’s Lucky Charm and a fifth-place effort behind Chance It in the $400,000 FTBOA FSS In Reality. However, jockey Jeffrey Sanchez never

The Fabulous Stride was the eighth career win from 22 starts for Firenze Fire who now has $1,634,000 in career earnings after the $116,400 paycheck for the Penn National victory. Firenze Fire is owned by his breeder Mr. Amore Stable and he is by Poseidon’s Warrior out of My Every Wish, by Langfuhr. It was the first win in six starts for the 4-yearold colt since taking the Runhappy Stakes at Belmont Park in June. However, he was still racking up paychecks in those races including two runner-up performances in the Grade 1 Vosburgh Stakes behind fellow Florida-bred Imperial Hint at Belmont Park on Sept. 28 and in the Grade 1 Forego Stakes won by Mitole at Saratoga on Aug. 24. had Shivaree on the lead at the first point of call in any of those first four starts. Then trainer Ralph Nicks changed jockeys and strategies for a Nov. 23 maiden special weight at Gulfstream Park West and the chestnut colt responded with an impressive nine-and-a-half length conquest over seven furlongs for new rider Emisael Jaramillo. Nicks and Jaramillo stayed with the successful strategy in the Buffalo Man as Shivaree went right to the front from post two. However, they were quickly joined by 8-1 choice and fellow Florida-bred Ricki Ticki Taffi from post six and those two sprinted through a full tilt quarter-mile in :22.13. Moving around the far turn, Shivaree raced to a length lead ahead of Ricki Tikki Taffi, who was then joined in second by Went West on the outside and 9-5 choice Complexifier on the rail. At the top of the stretch, Shivaree clicked off another solid fraction with a :44.98 halfmile as Went West joined Shivaree from the outside. Those two went past the furlong marker together before Went West put a head in front with an apparent winning move. But, Shivaree was not done on the rail and gallantly fought to the lead again inside the last 100 yards and won by neck over Went West in second in a final time of 1:09.42. Complexifier was another sevenand-a-quarter lengths back in third followed by Aycapote, Ricki Tikki Taffi, Iberico and Dialed In Gold on the track rated as fast. “When I saw him make the lead, it was – was he good enough from there? When the other horse collared him and stuck his neck in front of him, it was – he may be second best,” Nicks said. “But [owner] Fred [Brei] teaches them to run. They’re trained to run; they’re trained to be tough; they don’t quit.” By Brei’s Florida stallion Awesome of Course, who stands at Ocala Stud, Shivaree is out of Brei’s multiple-stakes-producing mare Garter Belt, by Sexy Stockings. Garter Belt has also produced multiple-stakes-winners Twotwentyfive A and Garter and Tie. She also has a yearling full-brother to Shivaree, and a weanling by Jess’s Dream. It’s the family. They get better later.” Shivaree now has two wins from six starts with earnings of $99,120. He paid $10.80 to win. “We’ll see what this takes out of him. He’s had two tough races back to back. He won by a lot at GPW but he was ridden out and he ran fast. He ran seven furlongs in 1:23. He ran 9-and-1 today,” Nick said. “His feet might have to cool off a little bit.” ■

Bellera put a head in front as they went past the eighth-pole then drifted in slightly before Velazquez steered her to a lengthand-three-quarters victory over Arrifana in second. The final time on the fast track was 1:52.09. Gold Standard was another three-quarters-of a length back in third followed in order by Afleet Destiny, Classic Fit, Oxy Lady, Lightscameraaction and Stand for the Flag. "She won the last race, she just didn't have a rider on her back," joked Pletcher, who won his first Comely with Broadway's Alibi in 2012. "When something like that happens, you're always concerned if they come back

safely, but she came back great and trained great. I felt that the mile-and-an-eighth suited her well and she came back great today. "We were just focused on this, it's the last straight 3-year-old filly, two-turn opportunity, so we were looking forward to this," he added. "It seems like she gets better and better. It's nice when you have one that can handle the mile and an eighth like she does." Bellera is by Bernardini out of Habiboo, by Unbridled’s Song and was bred in Florida by Hardacre Farm LLC. She has now won three of six lifetime starts and the $110,000 first-place check in the Comely pushed her to $209,650 in career earnings. lorida-bred Thousand Words lived up to his $1 million yearling price tag Dec. 7 at Los Alamitos Race Course as he tenaciously won the $200,000 Los Alamitos Futurity (Grade 2) by a neck over 6-5 favorite Anneau d’Or and two other juveniles. The bay son of Pioneerof the Nile, who won the 2008 version of the Futurity when it was known as the Cash Call Futurity (G1) at the now razed Hollywood Park, also began a five-win day for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. Baffert has also now won the Los Alamitos Futurity all five times since being moved to Los Alamitos and 12 times total. It was the first quintuple of his illustrious thoroughbred career and he’s the first trainer to win more than three in an afternoon since daytime thoroughbred racing returned to Los Alamitos in 2014. In addition to the Futurity, Baffert also won the Grade 1, $300,000 Starlet with Baoma Corp.’s Bast and with three other starters— Speed Pass, Message and Ra’ad—on the card. The five victories came consecutively as he won races 4-8 Saturday. “I thought all five of these horses were live, but usually that means you’re lucky if you win one,’’ said Baffert. “You never know. It worked out well.’’ The victory in the Los Alamitos Futurity kept Thousand Words undefeated in two starts having won a six-and-a-half furlong maiden special weight by a head at Santa Anita on Oct. 26. On a track labeled good and sealed, the Baffert-trained High Velocity went to the front from post four and led the field by a length through fractions of :22.47 and :45.87. Thousand Words and jockey Flavien Prat loomed in second, just to the outside of 6-5 favorite Anneau d’Or in third with Wrecking Crew a nearby fourth. Thousand Words moved up to challenge stablemate High Velocity from the outside as they raced around the far turn with Anneau d’Or also putting in a three-wide move. Turning into the long Los Alamitos stretch, High Velocity on the rail a had neck in front of Thousand Words between horses with Anneau d’Or still in the fight on the outside. As

those three fought past the eighth pole, it appeared that Anneau d’Or might pass his rivals, but Thousand Words suddenly fought back to hit the finish in 1:43.19 with Anneau d’Or five lengths better than High Velocity in third. Wrecking Crew was far back in fourth. “Turning for home I thought I could run 1-2,’’ Baffert said. “But then I saw [Anneau d’Or] and I thought, ‘Oh no, he’s going to get us,’ but [Thousand Words] was game. When that horse came to him he took off and when he came back after the race he wasn’t even blowing hard. “Distance isn’t going to be a problem. That’s impressive when they can win like that second time out. [High Velocity] never really relaxed and was a little too keen early. “Los Alamitos has the best surface. To come here and win at my

appy Farm became the second Florida-bred in three years to win the $206,100 Fall Highweight Handicap (Grade 3) at Aqueduct Dec. 8, joining fellow Floridian Stallwalkin’ Dude, who won the six furlong test in 2017. Happy Farm, under 125 pounds, also kept alive a winning streak that now stands at four with the win over five other 3-year-olds and older in the Fall Highweight. Happy Farm started his winning span July 5 at Belmont Park when he won a $25,000 starter allowance going six furlongs. He then won at the $40,000 claiming level going six-and-a-half furlongs at Belmont Park on Sept. 7 before taking a second level optional claiming race on Oct. 10 just prior to the Fall Highweight, again at six-and-a-half furlongs at Belmont. Trained by Jason Servis, Happy Farm broke from post seven in the Fall Highweight but was bumped at the start by longshot Seethisquick to his inside. However, the 5-year-old gelding appeared unfazed as jockey Jorge Vargas Jr. was able to quickly put Happy Farm just off of early leader and 5-1 third choice Strike Power to his inside. Carrying 128 pounds, Strike Power continued to show the way into the far turn after the first two furlongs in :22.55 with Happy Farm a length behind in second and Seethisquick recovering to threaten from the three path. Happy Farm took the lead from between horses past the three-eighths pole with little urging from Vargas and had a length lead by the time they made their way onto the run for home. With just more than a furlong to the finish, Happy Farm had a length-and-a-half on the trio of top weighted Recruiting Ready with 132 pounds; Wonderful Light and Seeththisquick as Strike Power tired on the rail. Wonderful Light emerged from the trio past the sixteenth pole and appeared as if he might challenge for the win but Happy Farm accelerated again in the final strides to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:11.91 on the fast track. Wonderful Light was second, a half-length to the good of

third-place finisher Recruiting Ready in third followed in order by Seethisquick, Strike Power and No Distortion. "My horse broke quick and the assistant [Henry Argueta, assistant to Servis] told me he was going to be sharp," Vargas said. "I just tried to relax him. By the turn, he was going quick, but he was relaxed. I smooched at him a little bit and he jumped on it right away. When they came to me, I had something to fight back with." Happy Farm won for the ninth time in 19 career starts in his stakes debut and earned $115,500 for owner M and A Racing Ltd. The son of Ghostzapper out of Gospel Girl, by Holy Bull was bred in Florida by George and Karen Russell’s Rustlewood Farm Inc. located in Reddick, Fla. “I thought it was a excellent race. I mean, he was tested all the way around and he was game the whole time,” George Russell said. “I’m sure he’s feeling pretty good about himself and Jason [Servis] has done a great job. Before the race I thought it sure would be nice to hit the board. Afterwards, it’s even better to win.” Now with earnings of $398,888, Happy Farm is the first

She also has an unraced 2-year-old filly in Good Fight, by Afleet Alex; an unnamed yearling filly by First Samurai; and an unnamed weanling colt by Lord Nelson. She was bred to Kantharos in 2019. “[Gospel Girl] has thrown some very nice looking individuals,” Russell continued. “We just sold the First Samurai filly at Keeneland [September] for $150,000 and her Take Charge Indy colt [Take Charge Dude] has been winning. Everything out of her is running and holding together good so she is moving up in our broodmare band. I’m looking for good things to come.” Happy Farm went through the ring at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales August Yearling Sale in 2015 where Stanley M. Hough as an agent purchased him for $45,000 out of the Summerfield consignment. He was allowed to get away at odds of 7-1 in the Fall Highweight and returned $16.40 to win. ■

ongevity in racehorses, while highly sought after, can be elusive. Some horses are just not suited, mentally or physically, for the rigors of racing. Others excel early on but don’t live up to those first expectations. A select few reach the high echelons of racing, only to then become more valuable as a stallion or a broodmare than a racehorse. Then there are the Old Warriors. Typically geldings, they race on way past the industry’s usual best-by date, often changing hands through the claiming ranks or private sales. They become barn and fan favorites, always giving it their best even in defeat. Some dip their hooves in stakes company with varying degrees of success. But on they run because being a racehorse is what they love. To be named a 2019 Old Warrior, a Florida-bred racehorse had to be at least 7-years of age and won at least one black type stakes race on the season through Dec. 9. The 2019 racing season was testament that Florida-breds are bred to last. On the season, eight Florida-breds earned their Old Warrior badges. Leading the way were graded stakes-winners Pure Sensation, St. Joe Bay and X Y Jet. Rounding out the group were listed stakes winners Always Sunshine and Pay Any Price; stakes winners Big Changes, Hy Riverside and Royal Squeeze. At age nine, Pay Any Price is the elder statesman of the group with Pure Sensation next at 8-years-old. Pure Sensation won the most stakes with three, including two graded, in 2019. X Y Jet was the leading money earner on the season with $1,536,850. All in the group are geldings, except for Always Sunshine, who is still listed as a stallion.

OLD WARRIORS

Don’t be surprised if either the Turf Monster Stakes (G3) or Parx Dash Stakes (G3) are one day renamed for Florida-bred Pure Sensation. He has won the Turf Monster Stakes four times (2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019) and the Parx Dash Stakes three times (2016, 2017 & 2019) at Parx Racing. In the case of the Turf Monster, Pure Sensation won the 2015 edition by a nose in :55.81 for the five-furlong turf test; it was known as the Turf Monster Handicap that season. In 2017, the Patricia Generazio homebred won the Turf Monster Stakes by a half-length in :57.13. The third victory came in the 2018 Turf Monster Stakes with the Christophe Clement trainee prevailing by a neck in :56.42 for the five furlongs.. Cue up the 2019 Turf Monster on Sept. 2 and it looks like another rerun. But this time, Pure Sensation scored by a dominating three lengths over Dubini with Hollywood Talent third. Winning time for the five-furlong turf dash was :57.80. Moving on to the Parx Dash, Pure Sensation won the 2016 edition by two-and-a-quarter lengths in :57.35 for the five furlongs. In the 2017 version, he put on a clinic as he roared to victory by six-and-three-quarter lengths in :57.24. Pure Sensation made it a trio of Parx Dash

Also on the season, Pure Sensation captured the listed Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup on June 1 at Penn National. On a yielding turf, he won by a neck in :58.03 for the five furlongs. At Saratoga on Aug. 3, Purse Sensation posted a third to Leinster in the Troy Stakes (G3). He closed out the season with four wins and one third in six starts to bank $434,500. Pure Sensation has a career bankroll to date of $1,998,550.

ST. JOE BAY While making only two starts in 2019, St. Joe Bay maximized the results and picked up his third career graded-stakes win. In the San Carlos Stakes (G2) on March 30 at Santa Anita Park, St. Joe Bay made jockey Victor Espinoza’s return to riding after a February training spill a successful one. Carrying the green and white Hronis Racing LLC silks, St. Joe Bay stumbled slightly coming out of the gates, but quickly recovered to take the lead. Unchallenged, St. Joe Bay posted fractions of :22.45, :45.22 and 1:10.41. He romped to a three-length win in 1:24.06 for the seven furlongs. The victory brought the John Sadler trainee’s seasonal earnings to $124,000 and his career bankroll to $734,515. Bred by Bonnie Heath Farm LLC, St. Joe Bay is by Saint Anddan out of Dream Ride, by Honor Glide. He sold for $60,000 at the 2014 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s June 2-Year-Olds In Training and Horses of Racing Age sale. Consigned by Bobby Dodd, trainer Peter Miller signed the ticket. Trained by Miller and raced by Al Tamira Racing Stable and David A. Bernsen, St. Joe Bay won the 2016 Midnight Lute Stakes (G3) and the 2017 Palos Verdes Stakes (G2). On May 28, 2018, he was claimed for $62,500 by Hronis Racing after finishing third in an optional-claiming allowance race at Santa Anita. Transferred to Sadler’s barn, St. Joe Bay finished second by a head in the 2018 San Carlos Stakes (G2).

X Y JET The third time was the charm for X Y Jet in the $2.5 million Dubai Golden Shaheen (Group 1). Raced by Rockingham Ranch and Gelfenstein Farm, the gray/roan gelding was second in both the 2016 and 2018 edition of the lucrative sprint at Meydan. In 2018, he was caught at the wire by Mind Your Biscuits. But in 2019, X Y Jet finally got the elusive victory. Living up to his name, the Jorge Navarro trainee jetted to the lead and never looked back. He held off Matera Sky and fellow Florida-bred Imperial Hint to win by a length and a half. X Y Jet covered the 1,200-meter (5.96 furlongs) in 1:10.75. The victory was a big pay day for his connections, who collected $1.5 million. That check brought his seasonal earnings to $1,536,850 and his career bankroll to $3,095,513. Bred by Didier Plasencia, X Y Jet is by Kantharos out of Soldiersingsblues, by Lost Soldier. The guys who claim $5,000 and 7,000 horses just don’t get enough credit and for Gulfstream Park to put this kind of day on year after year and let us run for this kind of money is honestly the best thing you can get if you’re a guy like me.” Liza Star is a daughter of Cool Coal Man out of Sweet Chantal, by Snow Ridge and was bred in Florida by Pedro Maestre. At the top of the stretch, recent Parx allowance winner Rol Again Question and Royal Squeeze were heads apart before the latter gained the upper hand inside the final furlongs. Longshots Empire Power and D T Goodie also made late runs but could get no closer than a length-and-three-quarters from Royal Squeeze at the finish. MUGGSAMATIC MAKES IT THREE STRAIGHT IN CC EMERALD

Michael Dubb and Bethlehem Stables LLC’s Muggsamatic kept his winning streak intact at three by winning the $125,000 Claiming Crown Emerald over a

large field of 11 3-year-olds and older who had started for a claiming price of $25,000 or less since Jan. 1, 2018. The large group went a mile-and-one-sixteenth on the main track. Making his first start for trainer Jason Servis, who had claimed Muggsamatic for $25,000 out of his last race at Monmouth Park on Aug. 11, the bay gelding broke with the leaders in the CC Emerald but found a comfortable spot behind the front-runners as they raced around the clubhouse turn. Recent Gulfstream Park West optional claiming winner Max K.O. sprinted to a clear lead from the start and was still a length in front of Driven by Thunder in second after sluggish quarter-mile fractions of :23.69, :47.85 and 1:11.65 for six furlongs. Lopez patiently maneuvered Muggsamatic toward the leaders around the far turn before accelerating to full tilt in the run for home. Muggsamatic responded with authority and went on to win by a length-and-one-quarter in a time of 1:41.02. Apreciado was second with Tusk making a late run to get third. Muggsamatic returned $5.80 as the 9-5 favorite. Muggsamatic earned $68,750 for the win to increase his career revenues to $291,590 from nine wins in 24 career starts. Muggsamatic is by Any Given Saturday out of Brown Eyed Woman, by DeNiro and he was bred in Florida by Gilbert G. Campbell.

By HEATHER SMITH THOMAS ntestinal infections can be deadly for young foals, especially in the first days and weeks of life. A clean environment, good care and monitoring, and being proactive to head off or deal with any problems are very important, according to Dr. Eric Schroeder, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Ohio State University.

I

NON-INFECTIOUS CAUSES

Dr. Bonnie Barr (Rood and Riddle, Lexington, Kentucky) says there are non-infectious and infectious causes of diarrhea in young foals. “The noninfectious causes include what we call foal heat diarrhea because it occurs about the same time as the mare’s first heat period. The foal is essentially healthy and keeps nursing the mare but just has loose feces,” she says. Those foals just need to be closely monitored to make sure the diarrhea doesn’t worsen, and be prepared to give supportive treatment if necessary. It’s also important to keep the foal’s messy hind end

Any foal that is not acting normally and has evidence of diarrhea can be at high risk of systemic disease “greased” to protect the delicate skin from being scalded/burned by the acidic feces. “A hypoxic insult (lack of oxygen) to the gut can also cause diarrhea. A hypoxic insult can occur secondary to prolonged dystocia, placental problems as the foal is being born, or the need for resuscitation at birth, and often other body systems are

INFECTIOUS CAUSES

Foal with diarrhea

There are many bacterial pathogens that can cause diarrhea in foals, including Clostridium perfringens, C. difficile, Salmonella, etc. “The viruses include rotavirus and sometimes corona virus. We don’t know yet how much corona virus affects the younger foals. It may be there (and we discover it with molecular testing such as PCR) and may play a role, but may not be the key player,” says Barr. Cryptosporidium is a protozoal intestinal parasite that can also cause diarrhea in young animals. “Those cases are possibly a bit immunocom-

Signs of Sickness

The foal may seem just a little lethargic and the person monitoring the foals might take a wait-and-see attitude. The foal might be dull and uncomfortable, maybe spending more time lying down, maybe rolling onto its back and acting a bit colicky, or not nursing the mare as much. “If you see the mare with a big udder or streaming milk, this is a clue that the foal isn’t nursing,” Schroeder explains. It is very important to detect problems early, and begin treatment early, before the foal is seriously compromised. A 24-hour delay in treatment might have catastrophic results. “In the neonatal foal, early recognition and early intervention is absolutely paramount,” says Schroeder. With diarrhea, a young foal can dehydrate rapidly because the diet is just milk. The young foal consumes about 20% of its body weight daily in milk, nurses often, and urinates frequently. If the foal is not nursing as much as usual, and continually losing fluid through diarrhea and urine, the end result is dehydration. “If there is any wetness on the foal’s tail at all, even if you are not seeing diarrhea, this is a sign of trouble,” he says. You don’t always see the foal passing loose feces, or see the watery feces on the ground; it may soak into the grass or bedding and isn’t very obvious. Oftentimes the foal’s wet tail or buttocks may be the only clue. If the foal has diarrhea for more than just a few hours and it gets all over his hind end, this result in direct irritation and “scalding” of the skin, and hair loss. ■ 44 THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2020

promised; a strong healthy foal may not become infected as easily with this pathogen,” she says. There are some common (and some not so common) causes of infection and diarrhea. “We can usually do some diagnostic testing to determine the cause, but we can’t just take a fecal sample to test because that would grow a lot of different pathogens that may not be important,” says Schroeder. “We have to try to pinpoint the one that’s causing the problem. The ones we look for include salmonella, coronavirus, rotavirus (which typically affects slightly older foals) and clostridia,” he says. “Rotovirus is the most common viral cause of neonatal diarrhea. It can be a significant problem on large breeding farms, due to extensive animal traffic and can be endemic in the environment. Rotovirus can cause classic diarrhea outbreaks. It can be a challenge because this virus is aerosolized. It can be spread not just by the fecaloral route, but also through the air indiscriminately, potentially exposing all the foals. Older foals can act as a reservoir population and infect the younger foals,” he explains. TREATMENT

Any foal that is not acting normally and has evidence of diarrhea can be at high risk of systemic disease, which can be fatal. This is the reason for immediate veterinary intervention and supportive care. “Treatment will include broad spectrum antimicrobials, fluid therapy, isolation of that foal and strict biosecurity to prevent spread of disease (gloves, shoe covers, etc.),” says Schroeder. “We almost always administer antimicrobial therapy and fluid support, because we know the outcome of foal diarrhea can be serious—either death or severe secondary complications like septicemia and infected joints. Septicemia can be a huge complication if a foal has bacterial diarrhea, and if it affects the joints it can be career-ending or even life-ending,” he says. Because of the risk for complications like septicemia, nearly every foal that has diarrhea is put on antibiotics unless that foal is acting completely normal—bright and alert, nursing mom, active and playing and doing all the normal things that healthy foals do, and with normal bloodwork parameters. “If all of these things are normal we may try some other medications without putting the foal on antibiotics. We may give fluids, or we may pull BARR PHOTO

also affected. Treatment for the gut problem includes supportive treatment and giving the gut time to heal and normalize, which might mean withholding milk temporarily (and providing nutrition intravenously),” she explains. An orphan foal on milk replacer may also get diarrhea or indigestion. “I always tell people that if you have a foal on milk replacer, stick with the same brand and don’t keep changing. If you have to change, make the transition gradually,” says Barr.

the foal back a bit off the mare if it’s been overeating. We may try to slow the diarrhea and get the feces to firm back up, using binding agents,” he says. “The key in treating foals is maintaining hydration and electrolyte balance, and making sure they are getting some type of nutritional support—especially if they are not nursing,” says Barr. “In some instances the foal is too compromised to nurse, or bloated and not nursing. In these cases you have to provide intravenous nutrition. This can be more difficult to do on the farm than here in the clinic,” she says. Treatment may also include anti-inflammatory agents. “We may give the foal a little Banamine or some other NSAID to reduce fever and inflammation,” says Barr. There are also some anti-diarrheal products that can help, such as Bio-Sponge, Pepto Bismol, Keopectate or charcoal products. These may soothe and coat the gut lining and help firm up the gut contents and slow the diarrhea. “Sometimes we put these foals on a little Gastrogard or sucralfate—some kind of gastro-intestinal protectant,” she says. “We may also administer probiotics and prebiotics. This is a big trend in both human and veterinary medicine. There are many different brands of these supplements available. We don’t know if they truly help, but I think they do help a little bit in the younger foals. Research in this area is ongoing,” says Barr. “In some instances we may give a foal a transfer of ‘gut bugs’ from mama’s manure or from some other healthy adult horse. At our practice, we call this a fecal cocktail, mixing it with a little bit of water and administering it into the stomach by tube. This is sometimes done with foals that have chronic diarrhea because we suspect that the gut flora are very abnormal.” Foals obtain the proper bacteria by eating some of the mare’s feces, but a sick foal may need more of these. PREVENTION

Minimizing the risks for diarrhea entail good management and good hygiene. You want a clean environment for young foals. “It’s also crucial that they get adequate colostrum in the first hours of life,” says Barr. “As soon as the mare foals, clean off her udder and hind legs, etc. before you let the foal nurse,” she says. You don’t want him picking up pathogens as he nuzzles around the mare trying to find the udder. Also make sure the mare’s stall is clean. “You also need to isolate any foals that have diarrhea so they won’t be spreading pathogens to other foals,” she says. ■ THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2020 45

■ Editor’s Note: If you would like an English translation of this column, please contact Brock Sheridan, Editor-inChief at 352.732.8858 or email at: bsheridan@ftboa.com

The member application will come in the mail auto-filled for your convenience, but you must check your membership category. Be sure to note any change in your status on the form. Also, for your convenience, the form is now available in auto-fill format online at www.ftboa.com. Members can complete the form and print it from online. Members can also mail their renewal payment or send by fax by providing a credit card number or call, whichever method is most convenient. Prompt payment ensures uninterrupted services. Those who send in renewals by the end of January will also be entered in drawings. Each year, there are a few members who do not receive their full benefits of membership because they wait to renew at foal registration time in August. This means they miss the April/May issue of The Florida Horse and also the June/July issue of the Farm/Services Industry directory in addition to not being able to participate in the member discount program for farm services, hotels, restaurants and other business partnerships. Lapsed members also miss key communications regarding pertinent deadlines and industry updates. Late payment by March 1 ensures uninterrupted services. During our membership renewal period, we also encourage our existing members to talk to their clients, interested friends and family about joining as regular members if they have a Florida thoroughbred or as associate members so they can learn more about the industry. We have been growing membership with new breeders, owners and also associate memberships. We want to spread the word about our industry here in Florida and encouraging new members is one way to do so. New members who want to meet one-on-one are encouraged to call the offices to set up a time. A number of new members did this in 2019 and it was very valuable
