Florida FOCUS by Brock Sheridan World of Trouble Breaks Out With Pasco Score

There may be a new Florida-bred star that emerged from the Pasco Stakes at Tampa Bay Jan. 20 as Michael Dubb’s World of Trouble won in style. The Pasco Stakes saw eight 3-year-olds going seven furlongs for the $125,000 purse that was enhanced by a $50,000 “Win Only” bonus for Florida Sire Stakes eligible starters and a $25,000 “Win Only” bonus for registered Florida-breds. World of Trouble, who was second to Soutache in the $200,000 Affirmed division of the Florida Sire Stakes at Gulfstream Park in September, was racing for both the extra FSS bonus and Florida-bred money. In his only other start in August, the Jason Servis-trained World of Trouble defeated $25,000 maiden claimers at Gulfstream by 14

lengths in his career debut—so the son of Kantharos and Meets Expectations, by Valid Expectations had shown potential from the start. After a four-month vacation and a switch from the Kathleen O’Connell barn to Servis, World of Trouble looked primed for a big performance in the Pasco and the bay colt did not disappoint his connections nor those who made him the 4-5 post time favorite. World of Trouble broke from post five and jockey Antonio Gallardo was able to place him

on the lead with little effort while racing to the inside of Twin Farms with Florida-bred He Hate Me leading the second flight that included Driven by History and Mind Trappe, all stalking from another 1½ lengths further back. After a first quarter-mile in :22.51, World of Trouble lead Twin Farms into the turn before he began to draw off from the competition with little effort. Into the stretch, World of Trouble ducked out a bit but the others could not take advantage as Twin Farms could not keep pace and He Hate Me moved into second but still unable to challenge World of Trouble, who was six lengths in front at the eighth pole. Meanwhile, Mind Trappe and Driven by History were at each other for third. Gallardo allowed World of Trouble to coast under the wire almost 14 lengths in front of He Hate Me in second to complete the Florida-bred exacta with a final time of 1:21.52 over the fast track. Mind Trappe was third with Driven by History fourth. The time was just .12 seconds

off the stakes and track record and equated to an impressive 97 Beyer Speed Figure. “I saw the replay of his last race at Gulfstream [when second in the FSS Affirmed] and he tried hard that day, but today was amazing,” Gallardo said. “He did everything I wanted him to do, and when it was time to go I asked him a little bit and he exploded. He did it in 1:21, but he wasn’t giving me everything. I think he had something left inside.” The only move by World of Trouble that went without instruction was at the top of the stretch when he made the slight detour to the right. “He saw a tractor mark and made a little right turn, and I was like no, no, go straight please,” Gallardo said with a grin. Bred in Florida by Darsan Inc., World of Trouble now has two wins from three career starts. He picked up $95,000 for the victory which pushed his career earnings to $149,400. Servis, who also trains Florida-bred sophomore Firenze Fire, who won the Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct and is a top contender for the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade 1) on May 5, may have another potential Derby horse in World of Trouble. Servis indicated that he may return World of Trouble to Tampa Bay Downs for the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) scheduled for March 10. Which also carries qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby. “Sometimes a horse just needs to run, and he looks like something special,” Servis said. “My phone has been inundated the last few minutes, everyone saying it was an incredible performance, and I’m pretty excited right now. I have to get the horse back and talk to Mr. Dubb about what’s next, but the way he handled the track makes you think you want to come back [to Tampa Bay Downs].” ■

Clocker’s Corner Goes To Florida-bred Calculator Florida-bred Calculator remained undefeated over Santa Anita’s downhill turf course Jan. 28 when he won the $75,000 Clocker’s Corner Stakes. The 2018 version of the Clocker’s Corner featured a field of six 4-year-olds and older going 6½ furlongs down the hillside turf course at the Arcadia, Ca. track. Calculator, who spends a good portion of his time running against some of the top sprinters on the West Coast, has recently had solid efforts such as his second-place finish behind Giant Expectations in the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Stakes at seven furlongs on the main track at Del Mar on Aug. 26. A few traffic problems in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) resulted in a seventh-place finish but he rebounded to finish fourth, but only 1¾ lengths behind winner Silent Bird, in the Grade 3 Midnight Lute Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 30. His two previous starts over the downhill course were against high level allowance optional claiming horses. He defeated $62,000 optional claimers in March and again in July. In the Clocker’s Corner, Fly to Mars broke best of all from post one, but before they made the right hand turn, Calculator had taken over from the two path and led them down the hill in a quick :20.85. Calculator still had more than two lengths on Jimmy Bouncer in second and The Critical Way in third when they approached the crossover to the main track. Calculator made a small jump onto the main track but quickly regained his stride to lead the group back onto the turf course stretch run. Jockey Flavien Prat shook the reins at Calculator and he responded well before Perfectly Majestic and Fly to Mars began their runs to the finish. Prat gave Calculator some right handed encouragement but the race was never in serious question for Calculator, who went to win by a length in 1:12.18. Fly to Mars was in second with Pefectly Majestic third. 10 THE FLORIDA HORSE • MARCH 2018

“He broke really good and I just decided to make the lead,” said Prat, who was aboard Calculator for the first time. “I knew the fractions were fast but he was comfortable…He was the best horse.” Off as the 4-5 favorite Calculator paid $3.80, $2.60 and $2.10. “I thought he ran huge,” said Miller’s assistant, Ruben Alvarado. “He’s more mature now and we’re looking for big year with him.” “Flavien’s a great rider, but he didn’t follow instructions at all,” joked winning owner, Richard Pell. “We thought the one [Fly to Mars] would go and we’d track him, but it didn’t work out that way.” Calculator is by Ocala Stud stallion In Summation out of Back to Basics, by Alphabet Soup. He was bred in Florida by Ocala Stud, who also consigned him to the 2014 April Sale at Ocala Breeders’ Sales where Miller purchased him for $132,000. Calculator has been a good return on investment for Miller and Pell as the $46,080 first-place check pushed his career earnings to $642,560. It was his fifth win from 20 career starts. ■

Strategic Dreams Pulls Off Ruthless Plan Florida-bred Strategic Dreams was ranked 68th, with 104 pounds, in the recent Jockey Club’s Annual Top 2-Year-Old Rankings of fillies. That may not have been enough to make folks run off and make their bets on Strategic Dreams in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) future book, but notable nonetheless. Strategic Dreams legitimized her notoriety, however, when she won the $100,000 Ruthless Stakes at Aqueduct in her 3-year-old debut on Jan. 28 in earning her fourth win and second stakes victory in five career starts. The Ruthless Stakes featured six 3-year-old fillies going seven furlongs on the main track. Trained by Rudy Rodriguez for David Wilkenfeld’s Pick Six Racing, Ian Behar and Theresa Cotrone, Strategic Dreams came into the Ruthless off of a win in the $100,000 Gin Talking Stakes at Laurel Race Course on Dec. 30. Sandwiched in between her successful debut against $50,000 maiden claimers at Saratoga in August and a victory over entry level allowance optional claiming horses on Nov.

10, was her only blemish. She was fifth behind winner Seperation of Powers in the Grade 1 Frizette at Belmont Park on Oct. 8. But the daughter of Archarcharch and D’fashion, by D’wildcat, had little trouble in winning the Ruthless. With jockey Manuel Franco aboard for the first time, Strategic Dreams was in no hurry during the first part of the race as she sat in fifth, about three lengths off of pacesetter Danyelli after a first quarter in :22.90. As they approached the far turn, Franco sent her to the outside as she began to make up ground on the leaders after they went the first half-mile in :46.93. At the top of the stretch, Danyelli still led from the inside as Blushing Justine moved into contention just to her outside. Meanwhile Strategic Dreams was also making her bid for the lead while still racing 3-wide. They raced as a trio until the eighth pole when Strategic Dreams took over on her way to a 3¼ length win over Blushing Justine in second with Danyelli third. The time for the seven furlongs over the sloppy and sealed track was 1:27.02. “I followed the instructions,” Franco said. “Rudy told me don't be too aggressive early, just let her settle, and that's what we did. And then she came running when I asked her.” “I think she is a nice filly,” he added. “She has a good future. I am so thankful they give me the opportunity to ride her. And we got it done. [Rudy] told me she will run on anything. Anywhere.” Strategic Dreams earned $60,000 for winning the Ruthless and increased her career bankroll to $202,200. She was bred in Florida by Karen J. Silva. She was sent to the post as the 4-5 favorite and paid $3.90 to win, $2.70 to place and $2.10 to show. ■

Rainbow Heir, the 9-time stakes-winning son of Wildcat Heir, went out on a high note Jan. 27 on Pegasus World Cup Day, capturing his second straight stakes victory with a two-length win in the $175,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint S. An earner of $804,395, Rainbow Heir has officially been retired from racing, and he recently arrived at Ocala Stud Farm in Florida where he will take up his new career as a stallion in 2018. His fee has been set at $3,500 S&N. “Rainbow Heir arrived Jan. 27 and settled in beautifully. He’s all class,” said Ocala Stud’s David O’Farrell. “You wouldn’t know by looking at him that he just ran one of the fastest races in North America this year. We were fortunate to be down there to see it, and I thought, other than Gun Runner, nobody looked better than Rainbow Heir. And there were a lot of really nice horses down there, obviously. “We are extending our stallion open house through February 15th, which will include morning and afternoon times every day except Sundays, and we invite everyone to come out and see Rainbow Heir. He has a lot to offer the breeders of Florida, and we believe he’s going to be very well received,” he added. Rainbow Heir’s win that day was arguably one of his best, as he cruised by an accomplished field in the stretch to hit the wire all alone

in :55.47 for five furlongs. He earned a lifetime best 105 Beyer for the performance, marking the fastest Beyer recorded on grass in 2018. In his prior start, Rainbow Heir captured the $125,000 Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship S. on Nov. 25th, running six furlongs in 1:08.60. A New Farm homebred, the chestnut colt began his career by winning his first four starts by a combined 13¼ lengths, including the biggest of his nine career stakes wins in the Jersey Shore S. (G3) on dirt at Monmouth as a 3-year-old, a race he dominated by five lengths in 1:09.43.

Trained by Jason Servis, Rainbow Heir was the New Jersey-bred Horse of the Year, Champion Handicap Horse and Champion Sprinter in 2014. Recently, he was named New Jerseybred Champion Turf Runner in 2017. From his nine stakes wins, five were on dirt and four on turf. He retires with 14 wins total and 21 onthe-board finishes from 31 lifetime starts. Rainbow Heir is by the late Wildcat Heir, who’s been Florida’s leading sire the last four years, and six times total. He is out of the stakes-placed Prospectors Gamble mare, Rainbow Pride. Rainbow Heir is now available for inspection at Ocala Stud, which will be hosting a daily open house for its stallions every Monday to Saturday through Feb. 15th from 8-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. For more information about Rainbow Heir or the open house, please contact David or Joe O’Farrell at 352-237-2171, or visit OcalaStud.com. ■

Secretariat Exercise Rider Charlie Davis, 78, Passes Away

FILE PHOTO

The Secretariat Team announced that Charlie Davis, the charismatic exercise rider for 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, died Feb. 7 from complications of lung cancer. He was 78. Davis, who was born on Feb. 2, 1940, in Orangeburg, S.C., started his vocation by cutting elementary school to watch the thoroughbreds train on the farm where his father worked. Small in stature but tough and determined, Davis learned how to exercise horses and eventually went to work for legendary trainer Lucien Laurin, becoming a member of the famed “Holly Hills” crew that also included storied groom Eddie Sweat. Davis exercised some of the era’s top racing stars of the 1960s, including champion filly Quill and Belmont Stakes winner Amberoid. In 1971, when Laurin took over Christopher Chenery’s Meadow string, Davis was assigned as exercise rider for the stable’s champion colt Riva Ridge and later Secretariat. He continued exercising horses until 1981, when he was thrown and suffered a career-ending back injury. Davis later worked as a foaling manager for several farms in the Ocala, Fla., area, and was known throughout the industry as a well-rounded horseman. Charlie Davis Davis regularly made appearances at racing venues, the Secretariat Festival and other events to the delight of generations of fans, always willing to share stories of Secretariat and his first-hand experiences as a member of the Meadow Stable Team. Following the announcement of his cancer diagnosis last month, friends and fans rallied around Davis, raising funds to cover his medical expenses. Davis is survived by his wife of 51 years, Caroline, as well as seven children and several grandchildren. His daughter, Katina Davis, said the family has been overwhelmed by the love and support they have received. ■ Written condolences may be sent to: The Davis Family, P.O.

Horse of the Year Gun Runner

20 THE FLORIDA HORSE • MARCH 2018

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla.– The National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters announced that Gun Runner, a winner of four Grade 1 races culminating with the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (Grade 1), was voted the 2017 Horse of the Year at the 47th Annual Eclipse Awards Ceremony at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. Florida breeders also had a good night as Floridabreds World Approval and Caledonia Road were honored as champions in their respective categories becoming the 51st and 52nd Florida-breds to be named North American champions. Live Oak Plantation’s homebred World Approval was named champion male turf horse and Zoom and Fish Stables Inc., Charlie Spiring and Newtown Anner Stud’s Caledonia Road took home the trophy for champion 2-year-old filly. World Approval received his accolades based on his victories in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), The Ricoh Woodbine Mile (G1), Fourstardave Handicap (G1), Loginess Dixie Stakes (G2) and the EG Vodka Turf Classic at Tampa Bay Downs. He was trained by Ocala native and Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association board member Mark Casse and was bred in Florida by Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Stud. He is also owned by Weber under the name of her Live Oak Plantation located in Ocala. Weber is also a former FTBOA board member. World Approval is by Northern Afleet out of Win Approval, by With Approval. Win Approval is also the dam of Miesque’s Approval, who also won the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Turf and the Eclipse Award as that year’s champion turf horse for Weber. Caledonia Road won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) in her final start of the year for South Floridabased trainer Ralph Nicks. In her only other starts, she was second in the Frizette Stakes (G1) and won a maiden special weight at Saratoga. She was bred in Florida by Peter Vegso’s Vegso Racing Stable and cur-

rently races for Zoom and Fish Stable Inc., Charlie Spiring and Newtown Anner Stud. She is by Quality Road out of Come a Callin, by Dixie Union and won two of three starts and $1,229,800. The Eclipse Awards, honoring excellence in North American Thoroughbred racing, presented by The Stronach Group, Daily Racing Form and the Breeders’ Cup, are voted on by the NTRA, Daily Racing Form (DRF) and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters (NTWAB). Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC and Three Chimneys Farm and trained by Steve Asmussen, Gun Runner received 248 out of a possible 250 first-place votes for Horse of the Year. Juddmonte Farms’ Arrogate, who was last year’s champion 3-year-old, received two first place votes. Gun Runner, who was also named the champion older dirt male earlier in the evening, won 5 of 6 starts during his 4-year-old season, including dominant victories in the Razorback Handicap (G3) at Oaklawn Park in April, the Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) at Churchill Downs in June, the Whitney (G1) and Woodward (G1) at Saratoga in August, and then finished the year with a front-running 21⁄4-length victory in the Classic at Del Mar. Gun Runner’s only defeat last year came in the $10 million Dubai World Cup (Group 1) in the United Arab Emirates, when he finished second to Arrogate. Gun Runner later turned the tables on Arrogate, who dead-heated for fifth in the Classic. Gun Runner, ridden in all of his races last year by Florent Geroux, finished the year with earnings of $6,950,700. A chestnut son of Candy Ride (ARG) out of Quiet Giant by Giant’s Causeway, Gun Runner was bred in Kentucky by Besilu Stables. Gun Runner is scheduled to make his final career start in Saturday’s $16 million Pegasus World Cup (G1) at Gulfstream Park, and then will be retired to stud duty at Three Chimneys Farm in Versailles, Kentucky. With the crowning of Gun Runner, Steve Asmussen becomes the first trainer since the Eclipse Awards began in 1971 to train the Horse of the Year winner on four occasions. In addition to Gun Runner, Asmussen, a member of Thoroughbred Racing’s Hall of Fame, trained Curlin to Horse of the Year titles in 2007 and 2008 and the filly Rachel Alexandra in 2009.

Florida-bred World Approval Begins 2018

TheWorld Begins By BROCK SHERIDAN Oldsmar, Fla.—World Approval, the 2017 North American champion turf male, started off 2018 in a very similar fashion to last year—winning a Tampa Bay Downs addedmoney race on grass. Last year, the Florida-bred gelding began his Eclipse Award season by winning the $100,000 Turf Classic on Florida Cup Day at Tampa Bay Downs. He won the $175,000 Tampa Bay Stakes over nine rivals in his 2018 debut. “Well Tampa Bay is where he started his campaign last year so we thought it was only right to

for the first half-mile. Moving toward the second turn on Tampa Bay’s turf, Hall of Fame jockey John Velasquez let World Approval change gears as he began to pick-up the pace around the bend. Suddenly, Doctor Mounty clipped heels, fell and threw jockey Antonio Gallardo. Cheyene’s Colonel and Manny Cruz could not avoid them and also fell. Luckily, no other horses were involved as World Approval and the others continued into the stretch. Both horses completed the course without riders and appeared to escape serious injury. Gallardo returned to the jockeys’ quarter while Cruz

with Tampa Bay Victory; also earns $25,000 bonus bring him back this year,” said Charlotte Weber, who bred World Approval and runs him under her Live Oak Plantation banner. “He’s a people’s horse. Even in the barn. He likes people. “I never like being the favorite but I think the people here picked it right. So I’m just happy he won,” Weber added. It appears World Approval also likes winning. Making his first start since taking the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) at Del Mar Nov. 4, World Approval returned to the winners’ circle for the fourth straight time after the Tampa Bay. He began his streak in August by winning the Grade 1 Fourstardave before winning the Grade 1 Ricoh Woodbine Mile in September. Sent off as the heavy favorite at 1-5, World Approval ran a comfortable race during the early stages of the 11⁄16 mile Tampa Bay while sitting third behind Western Reserve and Le Ken (Arg) as they set fractions of :23.25 for the first quarter-mile and :46.66

was transported to a local hospital with a suspected wrist fracture. Turning for home, World Approval took command and the race was never in serious question after that. Runner-up Forge (GB) gave it a courageous try in the stretch run as he chased home the champion but was only able to get within a half-length at the wire to keep second. Fire Away was another four lengths back in third. The final time was 1:40.66 on the course rated firm. Trainer Mark Casse, who won the Sam F. Davis (G3) with Flameaway in the previous race, said World Approval should benefit from his 2018 debut. “He has been better than he was today, but hopefully this will set a nice foundation for him this year. He’s a funny horse – he is not going to let you by.” Velasquez agreed. “[World Approval] was coming off a long layoff and sometimes they need a race,” the jockey

said. “But he’s still a true champion and he put everybody away down the lane. I think when we passed a mile it was getting a little long for him with the layoff and [the extra sixteenth] hit him right in the head a little bit.” The extra 110 yards may have been more of a tap on the shoulder than a hit in the head as World Approval racked up a 103 Beyer Speed Figure in the Tampa Bay. World Approval earned $90,000 for the win plus $25,000 in Florida-bred bonus money from the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association. The son of Northern Afleet out of Win Approval, by With Approval has now won 12 races from 25 career starts and earnings of $3,052,363. That pushes him to number 12 on the list of all-time richest Florida-breds behind Ginger Punch ($3,065,603) and ahead of Go Between ($2,908,880). World Approval paid $2.40 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.20 to show. World Approval is the fourth graded winning-millionaire produced by Win Approval. She also is the dam of 2006 Netjets Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) winner Miesque’s Approval, Grade 2 winner Revved Up and Grade 3 winner Za Approval. She is only the fourth mare to have produced two Breeders’ Cup winners joining Hasili (Ire) who is the dam of 2001 Filly and Mare Turf (G1) winner Banks Hill (GB) and 2005 Emirates Airline Filly and Mare Turf winner Intercontinental; Primal Force, who produced 1998 Classic (G1) winner Awesome Again and 2000 Juvenile (G1) winner Macho Uno; and Sweet Life, the dam of 2004 Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Sweet Catomine and 2009 Ladies Classic (G1) winner Life Is Sweet. Weber, who also bred and raced Live Oak millionaires Sultry Song and Solar Splendor, said she does not favor one champion or Grade 1 stakes winner over any other. “You can’t say that he is more exciting than this one or that. You take them when you get them because they are so special and few and far between,” she added. ■ THE FLORIDA HORSE • MARCH 2018 25

The Jockey Club’s Annual Top 2-Year-Old Rankings are a weight-based assessment of the previous year’s leading 2-year-olds, with the weights compiled for a hypothetical race at 1 1/16 miles. This year’s list of eligible horses to be weighted included all 2-year-olds of 2017 that started in graded or listed stakes races run in the United States and Canada. The racing secretaries on the weighting committee were P.J. he national weather service has the time of sunset in Miami on Jan. 27 at 6:00 pm. Almost exactly the time that Gun Runner crossed the finish line, 2 ½ lengths in front of West Coast, to win the $16.3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (Grade 1), the richest horse race in the world, before galloping off into that sunset towards a new stud career at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky. It was the culmination of a near perfect ride by Florent Geroux, another exceptional training job by Hall of Fame trainer Steven Asmussen and a flawless performance by Gun Runner himself. Breaking from a difficult post position 10 going 11⁄8 miles on the main track, Gun Runner and Geroux had little time and roughly 110-plus yards before the first turn where they could have easily been caught wide and comprised their chances. However, Gun Runner provided the quick break and early speed while Geroux provided the navigation and together they hit the turn just to the outside of frontrunner Collected with Giant Expectations third and West Coast fourth. Collected continued to show the way down the backstretch after an honest first quartermile in :23.41 with Geroux and Gun Runner still just to his outside, about a half-length back. As they approached the far turn, Gun Runner quickly moved up to even terms with Collected and was by that rival before they made it half-way around the bend. That is when West Coast came up to challenge Gun

Runner and those two hit the top of the stretch together after a half-mile in :46.61. It was a horse race until they went by the eighth pole when Gun Runner began to draw clear under left handed urging from Geroux, eventually crossing under the finish 2½ lengths ahead of West Coast in second with Gennevera another 10 ¾ lengths further back in third. Time for the nine furlongs was 1:47.41 over the fast track. Gun Runner earned $7 million for owners Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC and Three Chimney Farm, which increased his career bankroll to $15,988,500 to rank as North America’s second richest all-time thoroughbred. Arrogate, the 2017 Pegasus winner, retired with $17,422,600 in career earnings while California Chrome has $14,752,650 to his credit.

this point,” an emotional Asmussen said. “I’m just so proud of the whole team and happy for them. How much love that this team and Florent have for this horse is just a beautiful thing.” Gun Runner was recognized as the Horse of the Year at the Eclipse Awards ceremony held at Gulfstream Park on the Thursday night prior to the race. He was also named champion older dirt male. “This feeling is hard to describe, it’s a dream come true,” Geroux said. “We wanted the horse to prove that the Breeder’s Cup [Classic (G1)] and all of last year was not a fluke and the horse was there. In only one word, the horse was unbeatable.” It’s been an almost flawless run for Gun Runner since winning the Grade 1 Clark Handicap at Churnhill Downs in November of 2016. He went on to win the Grade 3 Razorback at Oaklawn in Febuary of 2017, finish second to Arrogate in the Group 1 Dubai World Cup at Meydan Race Course in Dubai, U.A.E. in late March, win the Grade 1 Foster Handicap at Churchill in June, win the Grade 1 Whitney and Grade 1 Woodward, both at Saratoga in September, before taking the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar Nov. 4.

38 THE FLORIDA HORSE • MARCH 2018

“I’m so impressed for him to come through like he did today, to overcome the draw,” Asmussen said. “I’m just so proud of the horse. What a dream come true.” It was the 12th victory from 19 starts for Gun Runner, who also has three seconds and two thirds. Ten of those races have come against Grade 1 company with four Grade 2 starts and two Grade 3 efforts. His only two races against non-graded company came in his first and second starts when he won a maiden special weight at Churchill Downs in September of 2015 and a victory over allowance horses at Keeneland a month later. Gun Runner is by Candy Ride (Arg) out of Quiet Giant, by Giant’s Causeway. He was bred in Kentucky by Besilu Stables LLC. He went off as the 6-5 favorite and paid $4.20 to win, $3 to place and $2.80 to show. RAINBOW HEIR TAKES TURF SPRINT BEFORE HEADING TO OCALA STUD

Yes, Gun Runner was the star of the show Jan. 27 at Gulfstream Park as he so dramatically won the $16 Pegasus World Cup before departing for Kentucky to begin his stallion career. However, he wasn’t the only stud on the card about to make a career change after a stakes win. New Farm’s Rainbow Heir, who is scheduled to stand at Ocala Stud during the upcoming breeding season, came from off the pace to win the $175,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint in his career finale. Under jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., Rainbow Heir was unhurried during the first part of the five furlong Turf Sprint as Successful Native sprinted off to an early lead from the inside post with Florida-bred Pay Any Price second as Richard’s Boy and Conquest Enforcer fought for third. Successful Native continued to lead through a first quarter-mile fraction of :21.94. Successful Native and Pay Any Price continued to fight around the turn but could not hold on after the field turned for home. That’s when Oritz sent Rainbow Heir to the outside where the 8-yearold son of the late Wildcat Heir began his rally as 25-1 longshot Oak Bluffs was making a similar run from between runners. Rainbow Heir hit the finish two lengths in front of Oak Bluffs in second with Richard’s Boy third. Final time for the five furlongs was :55.47 over the turf course rated firm. Rainbow Heir is trained by John Servis, who said he was sad to say goodbye to Rainbow Heir. “They were going pretty quick,” Servis said. “I was a little worried where we were placed early on, that maybe he wasn’t going to fire. He’s getting up there in years, but he’s heading up to Ocala. This is his last race. I think he’s a Breeder’s Cup horse, I don’t want him to go.” Ortiz said he was a bit more confident during the race.

There was an additional $150,000 in Florida-bred bonus money split evenly and made available in the Gulfstream Turf Sprint, Hurricane Bertie (Grade 3) and Fred Hooper Stakes (G3). Any of the purse supplement funds offered that were not awarded in the specific races will be carried forward and used to provide up to $25,000 in purse supplements for Florida-breds competing in select supporting card stakes during the 2018 Florida Derby Day (G1) program scheduled for March 31 at Gulfstream Park.

“[Rainbow Heir] has speed,” Ortiz said. “He broke out well and put me in a good position. I was following Richard’s Boy and I was patient and just waited. Before I turned for home I knew I had some horse and man, I don’t know how the [Richard’s Boy] will take off in the stretch, but I know I have some horse so when I asked him, he was there for me and we just flew by.” Rainbow Heir is out of Rainbow Pride, by Prospectors Gamble and it was victory number 14 from 31 career starts for him. He earned $72,850 for winning the Turf Sprint which boosted his career bankroll to $804,385. He finishes his career winning three of his last four races having also won the Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship on Nov. 25 and the New Jersey Breeders Handicap (a race he also won in 2014) at Monmouth Park in September. He also won the 2014 Jersey Shore Stakes (G3), the 2014 Teddy Drone Stakes, the Wolf Hill Stakes twice and the Gin Rummy Championship Stakes at Gulfstream Park West in January of 2017. Rainbow Heir returned $8.60 to win, $4.80 to place and $3.60 to show. He will stand for a $3,500 fee.

The French-bred filly Stormy Victoria (Fr) picked up her first added-money victory in the $125,000 South Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park on the Pegasus undercard. The South Beach featured a field of 11 fillies and mares going about 7 ½ furlongs on the turf. Ridden by Joel Rosario for trainer Christophe Clement, Stormy Victoria was knocked back at the start of the South Beach and found herself dead last as they went around the clubhouse turn. Conquest Hardcandy showed the way early as the 51-1 longshot took the distaffers through fractions of :23.39 for the first two furlongs and :46.91 through the first half-mile with Team of Teams giving chase in second and Storm the Hill running along in third. Turning for home, a confident Rosario allowed Stormy Victory to begin her rally from the outside as the 6-year-old mare began passing rivals with apparent ease. She continued her late run down the stretch before hit-

Just as she has done in most of her races, Girls Know Best went right to the front of the Ladies Turf Sprint, which included a field of 12 fillies and mares going five furlongs on the grass. Girls Know Best led the Florida-bred duo of Blue Bahia and Just Talkin through fractions of :22.31 for the first quarter-mile and a :44.53 half-mile before going on to win by three-quarters of a length over Just Talkin and Cherry Lodge in third. Blue Bahia, the 5-2 favorite, stumbled while running alongside Girls Know Best in the stretch, and finished off the board. “I had a perfect trip,” Castellano said. “I had the speed, I was inside on the rail, I used her enough to secure my spot and dictate the pace, go to the lead and blow the field [away] wire to wire. I felt like there was a horse that was going to go by but I didn’t realize what exactly happened. I just stayed focused on my horse to try to get to the wire first. Anytime you’re on the lead and close to the wire you feel like, ‘I did my job,’ and I’m very proud for the horse.” Girls Know Best is trained and co-owned by Eddie Kenneally with Brian Chenvert. She earned $72,075 for the victory, which was her seventh from 12 career starts. She now has $211,274 to her credit lifetime. “Her record was phenomenal, she was five for ten before I claimed her,” Kenneally said. “She had never run on grass and she’s extremely quick. She had been running three quarters on the dirt and I felt like if she

She earned her sixth trip to the winners’ circle from 22 starts. With the $72,850 winner’s check, she increased her career earnings to $431,215. Stormy Victory was let go at 3-1 and paid $8.60 to win, $3.80 to place and $3 to show. JORDAN’S HENNY PAYS $120 IN HURRICANE BERTIE

Jordan’s Henny, the longest shot in the field at 50-1, surged past favorite Curlin’s Approval approaching the wire to win Hurricane Bertie (G3) presented by FasigTipton by three-quarters of a length Saturday at Gulfstream Park. Under jockey Tyler Gaffalione, the gray daughter of Henny Hughes completed her run from off the pace just in time to deny Curlin’s Approval, a seven-time winner at the track. Jordan’s Henny completed the seven furlongs in 1:23.68 and paid $120.00. Rich Mommy was third, another three-quarters of a length behind Curlin’s Approval. "The filly broke well today. She put herself in a real nice spot and was relaxed back there. When I picked her up at the three-eighths pole, she started giving me more

down the lane, had a big stride and was all horse today. Bred and co-owned by E. Ervine Woolsey and Ralph Kinder and trained by Michael Tomlinson, the 4-yearold improved her record at Gulfstream Park to two wins from four starts. She broke her maiden at Gulfstream Park in Dec. 2016 and finished second in the Davona Dale (G2) and third in the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) in 2017. – Gulfstream Park Press Office “She is quite a prize,” Tomlinson said. “She’s come off of a layoff, she’s had a hard campaign last year. We freshened her and the owners let us do what we needed to do. Everyone discounted her, but this filly has a lot of class and we’re just thrilled to death with the outcome of today. Tyler (Gaffalione) and I discussed the amount of speed in the race and he did such a wonderful job and we’re just tickled to death for everyone involved.” “If you look at her form, she’s got back class all the way. She ran very competitive here last year and she had just been working so well and so easy, doing everything we asked her to do. What the owners and I talked about whether we could find an allowance race or running her here, we opted to run her here at Gulfstream and I’ll be the first to tell you my heart wanted to run here, but the trainer instinct said to give her an easier race to start with, but it’s worked out and it’s been a great ride with this filly.” – Gulfstream Park Press Office

TOMMY MACHO PROVES TOO TOUGH IN FRED W. HOOPER

PEGASUS World Cup

With an impressive stretch run, Tommy Mach wins the Fred W. Hooper

Paul Pompa Jr.’s Tommy Macho powered to the front around the far turn and fended off game long shot Conquest Big E the length of the stretch to snap a six-race losing streak in Saturday’s $175,000 Fred W. Hooper (G3) at Gulfstream Park. The 33rd running of the one-mile Hooper for 4-yearolds and up was among eight stakes, five graded, worth $17.225 million on a 12-race program anchored by the $16 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1), the world’s richest race. Favored at 2-1 in the field of nine, Tommy Macho ($6.20) ran one mile in 1:36.10 over a fast main track to win by three-quarters of a length over Conquest Big E. Tale of Silence was third, another 4 ¼ lengths back, with Giuseppe the Great fourth. It was the sixth career victory and third at Gulfstream for 6-year-old Tommy Macho, who also opened his campaign with wins in the 2016 Hooper and Hal’s Hope last January, his most recent triumph. Trainer Todd Pletcher said how much he likes having Tommy Macho in the barn. “He’s a cool horse, Pletcher said. “I give the horse a lot of credit. He loves Gulfstream. He loves the one-turn mile. He’s been awfully good to us. We’ll probably skip the [G3 Hal’s Hope, Feb. 24th] and go to the race on March 31 [G2 Gulfstream Park Mile].” Moves Like Ali was fastest from the gate and took the field through a quarter-mile in 24.09 seconds and a half in 46.57, as jockey Luis Saez had Tommy Macho poised to strike in the clear three wide. They surged to the lead

approaching the stretch and were followed by 15-1 Conquest Big E, who chased the leader down the lane but was unable to get by as they separated from their rivals. “That stretch run was really impressive, said jockey Luis Saez, who rode the winner. “He was really ready for this race today. He broke well, we got a perfect position, and when we hit the stretch he just took off. I feel blessed and proud with how my season is going.” – Gulfstream Park Press Office TEXTING EARNS STAKES CREDENTIALS IN LA PREVOYANTE

Sarah Sharp Farish’s Texting kicked in through the stretch to capture Saturday’s $200,000 La Prevoyante Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park. The 49th running of the 1½-mile turf stakes for older fillies and mares was the first of eight stakes on a starstudded program highlighted by the $16 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1). Trained by Chad Brown, Texting ($16.80) won the first stakes of her 12-race career while sitting off the pace set by Daring Duchess, who showed the way into the stretch after running the first mile in 1:37.85, and accelerating through the stretch to win by three-quarters of a length. “She’s a horse who has always been knocking on the door,” Brown said. “It maybe took a little time for her to just get the right trip and come around a little bit more. We’ve obviously thought enough of her to try her in a stake before. I’m really proud of her. I thought Javier (Castellano) really rode a good race. For this distance it was a very strong pace in front of them for the first half of the race and I think it really set up for her well.”

Ridden by Javier Castellano, the 5-year-old daughter of Candy Ride ran 1½ miles in 2:27.88. Daring Duchess held second under Jose Ortiz, three lengths ahead of Taralena and jockey Joel Rosario. “I had a beautiful trip, it was as good of a trip as any jockey would like to have. There were a few horses with good speed and we were able to settle around the first turn. I like what she did and I was very impressed with the way she finished in a mile and a half. I basically enjoyed the ride.” – Gulfstream Park Press Office OSCAR NOMINATED TAKES THE TROPHY IN W.L. MCKNIGHT

Nominated first start since Nov 11]. He had a hard campaign last year and after the Red Smith he needed a little freshening. It paid off today.” Ortiz expounded on the trainer’s comments. “I wasn’t expecting to break so good but wanted my horse to relax,” Ortiz said. “The pace was a little slow, so he was a little keen the first half mile, but when I got him to relax and asked him to go, he did.” "The next logical race would be the Pan American. Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Oscar Nominated rallied off a slow pace to captured the $200,000 W. L. McKnight (G3). It was the 51st running of the 1½ mile turf stakes for older horses. Trained by Mike Maker, Oscar Nominated ($9.40) was rated off a slow pace set by Infinite Wisdom, who ran the first mile on an uncontested lead in 1:42.15 under Frankie Dettori. Jose Ortiz settled Oscar Nominated in fourth before making a making at three-wide move on the far turn that carried him to a short lead at the top of the stretch. The multiple graded-stakes winner continued on to score by a half-length over late-charging Nessy. Bullard’s Alley, the 2-1 favorite in a field of nine, raced in traffic throughout the race and finished third, a nose further back. “I was a little worried that it was slow but it always appeared that [jockey] Jose [Ortiz] had a lot of horse during the course of the race and was within striking distance,” Maker said. “I was looking forward to [Oscar

Flameaway Fires Tenacious Win in Sam F. Davis SV PHOTOGRAPHY

By BROCK SHERIDAN OLDSMAR, FLA.— ix 3-year-olds broke from the gate to begin the 38th running of the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs Feb. 10 and 10-1 fourth choice Flameaway led the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) hopefuls into the first turn with little consequence expected. Afterall, the Mark Casse trainee was being chased by the much more accomplished Catholic Boy, winner of the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes and the 4-5 favorite; and gradedstakes-placed runners Vino Rosso and Hollywood Star. Yes Flameaway had won the Grade 3 Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland in October, but that was taken off the turf and run over a sloppy course. The same had applied to his victory in the $100,000 Skidmore Stakes at Saratoga in August. His last win came in gate-to-wire fashion in the $100,000 Kitten’s Joy at Gulfstream on Jan. 6, but that was on the turf. He was not proven over a fast, natural dirt track like he was running on in the Sam Davis. But when they ran under the finish line for the second time, when it counted for the $200,000 purse, there was Flameaway and jockey Jose Lezcano—a half-length in front of runner-up Catholic Boy and a little more than a length

ahead of Vino Rosso in third. After the victory, even Casse admitted he was unsure of running Flameaway on the dirt against the quality competition in Davis. “I have to say, I was kind of wishy washy about trying [Flameaway] on the dirt,” Casse said. “But [owner] Mr. [John] Oxley asked if we could try him one more time—and he is the boss—so I said ‘yes of course.’ “I thought his dirt races were okay, but I will say this. Two weeks ago he worked with He Takes Charge at Palm Meadows. And I thought he was visually impressive in his breeze. He Takes Charge was impressive today winning [a maiden special weight] at Gulfstream. So I told Jose [Lezcano] this horse is going to be very tough today. They are going to under estimate him.” The Sam Davis win obviously proved Flameaway has some versatility to his game. But his most important asset may be his tenacity. After leading through fractions of :24.18, :47.73 and

FlameAway_SamF.Davis.qxp_Florida Horse_template 2/23/18 10:29 AM Page 49

1:11.25, Flameaway led Catholic Boy and Vino Rosso into the stretch. However, Catholic Boy put a head in front of Flameaway with an eighth of a mile to the finish before the stubborn Flameaway fought back on the inside to win. He stopped the timer in 1:42.44 on the fast track to establish a stakes record, .01 seconds faster than McKracken’s winning time in the Sam Davis last year. They are going “He’s a fighter,” Casse said. “If you’ve ever watched him, you’ve seen that. At Gulfstream [in the Kitten’s Joy], it looked like he was beat. They ran by him and he came at them again and won. The one thing about him is, if he gets in a battle, he’s going to win the battle.” Flameaway, won the battle, the race, the $120,000 winner’s share of the purse and 10 points towards qualifying for the Kentucky Derby to be run May 5 at Churchill Downs. It was his fifth win from seven starts for Flameaway and pushed his career earnings to $434,834. Catholic Boy earned four Kentucky Derby qualifying

points, Vino Rosso picked up two points and fourth-place finisher Hollywood Star earned a point. Last year it took 40 points to qualify for a starting spot the Kentucky Derby. Flameaway is by Scat Daddy out of Vulcan Rose, by Fusiachi Pegasus. Owner John Oxley purchased Flameaway

for $400,000 out of the Fasig-Tipton New York August Sale of Selected Yearlings. He paid $22.60 to win, $5.40 to place and $3.20 to show. The Sam F. Davis was the highlight of an outstanding Festival Preview Day Presented by Lambholm South at Tampa Bay Downs. The afternoon of action saw the 2017 Eclipse Award champion turf male World Approval win the Tampa Bay Stakes (see story on page 24), Dona Bruja (Arg) win the Lambholm South Endeavour (G3) and C.S. Respiratory Aids By HEATHER SMITH THOMAS any horses suffer breathing problems, airway or lung impairments due to dust, allergies, disease. Just like humans, horses can benefit sometimes from breathing aids like nasal strips, inhalers and nebulizers. Dr. Larry Overly, known to most people as Dr. Ricky (track veterinarian at Los Alamitos, California), says nasal strips are just an aid for upper respiratory issues to allow airflow to be maximized. “By contrast, nebulizers and chelated silver products are utilized to deal with lower airway disease and inflammatory issues in the lungs (IAD—inflammatory airway disease). There are various ways we combat IAD but first we need to find out what is actually causing the inflammation.” It is important to pinpoint the source rather than just treat the symptoms. “Are we dealing with allergens or bacteria? These are questions that need to be answered when we are trying to correct an issue. If a trainer is using a nebulizer or hiring someone to nebulize the horses, it’s just a blanket treatment but will probably help most of them. These horses are in a stall at least 20 hours a day. They may be on the track or on the walker for a short time but spend most of their time in a stall,” says Ricky. We’ve taken the horse out of its natural environment and have created conditions that trigger inflammation. “There’s a lot of dust, mold and pollens associated with hay and bedding, and the barn itself. The horse is breathing in a lot of allergens, spores, fungi, etc. that lead to some form of inflammation. Nebulizer treatments are a shotgun approach to try to take care of an underlying problem even if the trainer doesn’t know exactly what the problem is; the trainer is simply trying to head off that inflammation,” he explains. “The hope is to give that athlete a chance for a better performance. We can’t use a

M

beta2 agonist like Ventipulmin or albuterol to try to mitigate problems by using those Becky giving Chester his products systemically. To address upper resbreathing treatment piratory issues we have to look for other aids—whether steroids or chelated silver products or the bromides or atropine (to stop bronchial spasms),” says Ricky. “We need to look at what we are trying to take care of. We can do a tracheal wash and get a histology report that gives a certain amount of information regarding the cells in the airways. Or we can do the bronchial alveolar lavage (BAL) to get more information. Some horses with bronchial spasms can benefit from being on mast cell inhibitors. This can help subdue the response to all the allergens and changes in the lower airway,” he says. “Every horse on the backside at a racetrack has a certain amount of inflammation in the lower airways and that’s the reason many trainers want to put those horses on something like Ventipulmin. Some want to nebulize the horses with corticosteroids or one of the chelated silver products. More than likely the horse will have some problem that the

Equine Care

50 THE FLORIDA HORSE • MARCH 2018

drug will help, and you’ll see some improvement, or it may have no effect.” “Most of the time I am called in when a horse is coughing or the trainer is hearing upper airway noise when the horse is galloping. We find some fluid and mucus in the trachea, and usually blindly treat those horses with antibiotics initially. If they don’t clear up, we do more diagnostics. My job is to try to figure out exactly what is causing the problem, and then work from a scientific basis on how to fix that problem,” says Ricky. “That’s not what we are doing when we just treat horses across the board with a nebulizer. That blanket treatment is basically assuming that all horses have some type of problem and that we are going to attack it in this specific way, hoping that the treatment will benefit the horse,” he says. Depending on the horse and its problems, some trainers work with a veterinarian to get to the bottom of an issue, if the horse continues to have trouble. “Maybe the trainer starts off using a nebulizer and it’s beneficial, but if it’s not, then it’s important to find out exactly what the problem is, and find what will lead to clearing it up” he says.

EquineCare_Resp_Aids.qxp_Florida Horse_template 2/21/18 4:07 PM Page 51

for Racehorses “Or, if you are a horse trainer and stabling X number of horses, trying to get the most performance, you might implement nebulizing treatment for all the horses in your barn, to try to increase performance of the whole barn. That may work, to some degree. Success is difficult to measure, but these trainers know their horses and know whether they are performing to what they think is their optimal level. You could potentially see some benefit regarding overall performance in a barn,” says Ricky. “There are many different products that can be used in a nebulizer including steroids and nebulizer formulations and bromides but we need to know what we are attacking and how to approach the individual problem. We can examine tracheal washes on some of the horses to see if they consistently have the same types of issues. Then work with your veterinarian to come up with a treatment that would be most successful,” he says. “The chelated silvers work best for their antimicrobial activity. If it’s not a bacterial issue,

and more of an inflammatory response, the horses might benefit more from a corticosteroid. We need to know what we are attacking. We also know that putting a corticosteroid into a horse that has an infection is counterproductive. In terms of the chelated silver, however, there’s probably not a downside; this won’t cause more inflammation. So even if it doesn’t help, it won’t hurt, whereas that’s not true with corticosteroids,” Ricky says. NEBULIZER TREATMENTS

Becky Canaday markets a nebulizer mask kit and colloidal silver for lung treatments. “My horse Chester is a bleeder. I took him to Texas A&M to figure out his problem. He was given a cellular lavage (BAL) when they scoped him, to get a sample of the airway fluid. Then I knew exactly what was going on with my horse. That was the best $300 I ever spent on him, in his entire career,” she says.

“His problem is exercised-induced pulmonary hemorrhaging. His respiratory tract itself was fine. Prior to that, I thought he had allergies. So I bought an all-in-one nebulizing system for Chester. When I had the nebulizer on him, however, it didn’t put out very much product except in spurts. He would get antsy, like he was not getting enough air. I had been advised to close up the hole in the bottom of the mask so he would breathe deeper, but this made him very uncomfortable. So I opened it up and let him breathe, but I only got about 20 uses out of the nebulizer cup before it quit, and it was $90 to replace it—and that’s after I’d spent $1100 on it,” says Becky. “I couldn’t find anything else that would work better, so I came up with my own respiratory system that is simple and easy to use. The veterinarians told me to not put a gasket

at the top—and to simply put the mask on the horse and let the horse breathe. A human mask, for someone with allergies, is not enclosed. We are not trying to force the air down the horse’s lungs. You are just letting them breathe comfortably and easily and letting the medicine get down there,” she explains. “I wanted something portable and easy to use. Our mask is inexpensive and we started nebulizing horses at the racetrack. Trainers didn’t want to use anything that goes from horse to horse—that might transfer pathogens from one horse to another. I feel that the gasket on top of a mask is a bacteria trap. I took my vet’s advice and came up with something a little different that is more affordable, easy to THE FLORIDA HORSE • MARCH 2018 51

Equine Care use, very lightweight and comfortable for the horse. Over time, plastic absorbs whatever it is next to, however. With ours, if at some point you feel like you can’t get it clean enough, you just throw it away and get a new one because it’s not that expensive,” says Becky. She decided to use colloidal silver as the treatment. “I get it from a veterinarian in San Antonio, who has used it in his clinics for 25 years. It is pH balanced, 99% bio-available. I sent it to 2 independent laboratories to have it tested, to make sure I was getting what I thought I was getting. So this is what I decided to use, and it has been very effective and affordable. Our kit comes with two 23ounce bottles. If you nebulize one horse once a day it takes half an ounce a day, so this will last almost 2 months,” she says. “It is not FDA approved and probably never will be. Silver has been around a long time in medical treatments. I know our silver is true colloidal silver. Ionic silver is not recommended for use internally. It’s ok externally but not internally because the ionic charge enables it to bond with sodium chloride (salt) in the body. Ours doesn’t turn cloudy if you add a pinch of salt because it is pure silver. The particle size is very small. If you compare the size of the silver with the size of a cell, it’s like putting a strand of hair in a one mile space,” she explains. “Regarding silver, most veterinarians say it doesn’t take very much to do the job. More is not better. There is no elaborate research to back up our claims; all we have are case studies in which we’ve treated horses with it. The only thing we go by, regarding how often to treat them is to monitor how the horse is doing. You have to use your own judgement and the horse tells you, as you hear the horse breathe, or cough,” she says “The thing to keep in mind about silver is how long it takes to kill pathogens. The kill time in a petri dish is anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 to 3 minutes. It usually stays effective, killing microbes, for about 4 to 6 hours. If you have a horse that is really sick, you can nebulize every 4 to 6 hours. You could also put it on their feed or give it as a drench,” Becky says. 52 THE FLORIDA HORSE • MARCH 2018

In some climates horses may also get fungus in their lungs. “Silver is a very effective treatment. An antibiotic is not affective against a fungus.” The nebulized silver can combat these lung invaders. Ron Martin gives breathing treatments to horses at Los Alamitos racetrack, using a silver product. “Becky Canaday got me started on this several years ago with a few really nice colts, and we’ve had incredible success. I worked on one filly that had been on 3 different antibiotics for respiratory infections, and cleared her up,” says Martin. Many owners and trainers ask him to treat their horses. “This seems to be very effective. There have been horses I’ve treated in the finals at every stakes race that has been run at Los Alamitos this year,” he says. “After a race, these horses recover nicely. I think the benefits from treatment are subtle, but that little bit can be a big thing for a racehorse. If you are running a race, the difference between placings may be a thousandth of a second,” says Martin. You want the horse to be able to run his very best. “I’ve had owners and trainers use my treatment for a temporary cough, but the ones who use me regularly on their horses as a maintenance treatment do the best. It’s not a cure-all and not guaranteed to keep a horse from bleeding, but it certainly helps when they are not being impaired by a respiratory issue,” he says. “Under the best of circumstances, especially at the racetrack, there are things that compromise these horses. They live in a stall, with horses coming and going from these barns. There are risks for respiratory infections, but this treatment can help. I was a skeptic in the beginning, regarding how effective it would be, but one thing that caused me to believe in it is how much the horses really like it,” says Martin. It must make them feel more comfortable. “Once I start treating a horse, they are very willing. I’ve had some that did not want me to

put that mask on, but after a couple treatments I never have to go into a stall to catch that horse; these horses meet me at the door and are eager for the treatment,” he explains. “I use colloidal silver from Silver Horse Care that I get from Becky Canaday and the mask that she designed. It’s durable, flexible plastic, similar to what a milk jug is made of but a little heavier. You can see through it, which is nice for cleaning. It’s easy to dip into a disinfectant to clean it,” he says. “Because of the way the mask is constructed, if it’s cleaned between uses it won’t spread infection. I’ve treated a lot of horses and have been careful to keep everything very clean. I’ve worked at Bob Baffort’s barn, and with all the top trainers Horse with heaves on nebulizer at Los Alamitos, and everyone has been satisfied with how it works and they have seen marked improvement in the horses,” Martin says. “The silver treatment is a great alternative for these horses because we are no longer allowed to use clenbuterol, and use of antibiotics is also limited at the race track. In California you can’t race a horse for 6 months after you use some of these drugs, so you need an alternative,” he says. “Many people today are using the silver treatments because it’s something they can legally use. You will know if your horse is going to benefit. The horse will really like it and will be waiting for the next treatment. I always treat a horse the morning after it races. In my opinion, that’s when the lungs are the most raw. The horses I treat on a regular basis recover quickly, and always look like they are ready to run again the next morning,” he says. Tonda Collins (in Oklahoma) markets Equi-Resp nebulizers and uses Equi-Silver as part of the treatment. “The Equi-Silver has been around for 12 years, developed by Dr. Michael Cavey, a veterinarian in Lexington, Kentucky. It’s the only silver product designed specifically for equine nebulization,” she says. “I worked 15 years with Medline Industries (one of the largest manufacturers and

distributers of medical products in the world), 12 years on the hospital side, and 3 years as VP of Animal Health. Because of my experience within the medical side, it gave me a better understanding of how a nebulizer should work for a horse. I met Mickey Ballew (owner of Equi-Silver) and worked with him on the backside of Churchill Downs. I saw that the prices of nebulizers on the market were high. The trans-respirators were $8400 and the Flexineb $1100 and they had a lot of pieces that continually need to be replaced. Another problem was that the masks didn’t fit very well,” she says. “So I designed a mask that has been working very well and then developed a new piece of equipment that is a true nebulizer for horses,” says Collins. “A couple years ago I went to Hagyard, one of the oldest vet clinics in the country, and had Dr. Nathan Slovis do a nuclear scintigraphy study to see how well these units work to actually get the medication down into the lungs of a horse. He was so impressed with the equipment that he asked if he could keep it, and is now using it on

58 THE FLORIDA HORSE • MARCH 2018

Damage to bahiagrass sod was more pronounced when soil pH was below 4.5. Two years into into the study, the color of bahiagrass ground cover on pasture B began to decline in response to liming management and fertilizer treatments. Unlike the unlimed pastures, five years into the experiment, minimum spring color change or damage to bahiagrass sod was noticed for plots limed to pH 5 whether or not they received fertilizer. Sod damage was most severe when bahiagrass pasture was not limed, but received yearly application of any nitrogen containing fertilizer. The combination of acidic soils (pH < 4.5) and repeated nitrogen fertilization reduced bahiagrass stolon/root biomass by 30 percent. RECOMMENDATIONS

1. When using nitrogen fertilizer, soil should be tested at least every three years. Apply fertilizer according to soil sample recommendations. 2. If pH is < 5.3, lime should be applied to correct soil pH. When applying lime/dolomite, be realistic and economical in choosing amount to apply. Apply a minimum of 1 ton of lime when soil test results recommend liming. Avoid over liming. High soil pH > 7 negatively affects forage growth. 3. Apply 50 - 60 lb. of nitrogen/acre to bahiagrass in early spring to boost yield and forage crude protein concentration. Additional nitrogen may be needed later during the growing season. 4. Repeated nitrogen fertilization with ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate can cause substantial decline in soil pH. Look for signs of early spring yellowing. n

he Red and Gold FTBOA Horse of the Year Gala is March 12. The colors represent the elegance and class of thoroughbred champions. About 350 industry members, trainers, owners, breeders, fans and their guests are expected to attend this year. This year, the event will once again be held at the Circle Square Cultural Center ballroom in Ocala. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. Cocktail attire or better is recommended and no jeans. Red or gold is a suggested accent to the evening’s attire. The evening’s program includes the Florida Thoroughbred Charities extensive silent auction followed by a lavish dinner and a short live auction of packages including World Series tickets and a trip for four for fishing in the Keys. The night culminates with the awards ceremony honoring Florida’s champions both human and equine and the Horse of the Year. Tickets are $100 for members and up to three guests and $150 for each non-member. A table of ten, including gold sponsorship, is $1,500 and a party of two for dinner is the silver sponsorship of $750. Fundraising is an important aspect of the event for the Florida Thoroughbred Charities. The charity fully supports the Florida Thoroughbred Retirement Farm at the Lowell Correctional Institute. Also known as Second Chance Farm, the program carries the slogan, “Helping Horses, Changing Lives,” as women inmates are given the opportunity to earn an equine certification degree and learn new skills working with retired thoroughbreds. This helps retired thoroughbreds develop skills for other disciplines and gives the women a chance to rehab themselves and obtain gainful employment after they are released. SALLY MOEHRING PHOTO
