Recognizing Pandemic Brock Sheridan
Editor-in-Chief Florida Equine Communications
JOHN D. FILER PHOTO
It is still “ appropriate
to recognize those in the racing and breeding industry that helped us get to this much improved point as an industry.
”
Leadership W
hile it is much too early for any of us to start slapping each other on the back for surviving the COVID-19 pandemic, even as race tracks are now running and sales companies are resuming their modified auction schedules, I think it is still appropriate to recognize those in the racing and breeding industry that helped us get to this much improved point as an industry. First, I think it important to recognize the staff and management of our Florida “home-team”—Gulfstream Park led by Billy Badgett and Tampa Bay Downs led by Peter Berube—plus Oaklawn Park, Will Rogers Downs, and Fonner Park, and all their respective owners, trainers, jockeys, and officials. In mid-March, racetracks around the country were closing their seasons prematurely and/or postponing them as the coronavirus began to spread throughout North America. But these five tracks pushed on and remained open. To be sure, many other tracks were forced to close by state or local officials and might have otherwise continued operating, but these five tracks are laudable for their dogged determination to push on with racing—albeit with no fans at the track—and to continue paying purses to horsemen and keeping as many of their employees as possible on the payroll. I think it also important to recognize Tom Ventura and his board and team at Ocala Breeders’ Sales. As their March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training approached, the virus was shutting down nearly every other business in Florida and around the country. However, with swift decision-making and adoption of several new protocols and procedures to increase safety and protect the health of all in attendance, the Ocala auction house pushed on with its March Sale—providing consignors and their clients a much-needed marketplace in a very uncertain time. Not only did OBS conduct the last thoroughbred auction before other auction houses and OBS itself had to shutter their planned spring sales of two-year-olds, but OBS was also the first to open again with its April Sale, which was pushed back to June, and their June Sale, which was postponed to July. I think it is also important for members to recognize the decisive and difficult actions taken by Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association CEO Lonny Powell, CFO Peggy Yost, and your FTBOA executive committee, officers, board members, and supporting team.
6 THE FLORIDA HORSE • SEPTEMBER 2020
The moment it became apparent that spectators—and eventually owners and other horsemen—might not be allowed on the grounds for live racing or racino gaming, Powell and Yost went to work analyzing the impact on Florida breeder and stallion awards resulting from the loss of ontrack wagering and slot machine revenue. Intent on maintaining the solvency of the awards program through the pandemic and beyond and ensuring that all awards and Florida-bred purse supplements were paid on time, the FTBOA pushed forward and took the painful step of securing state approval to suspend breeder awards for secondplace and third-place finishers, while maintaining 10% breeder awards for winners. The state likewise approved a reduction in stallion awards from 15% down to 10%. This was a difficult pill to prescribe, and perhaps even more difficult to swallow, but it had to be done in order to maintain the overall health of the Florida awards program. As is so often the case, Florida faced this reality sooner and acted more quickly than organizations in most other breeding states. Despite months of “no spectator” racing and no racino gaming in Florida and all of the broader public health concerns and economic uncertainty, which have fallen particularly hard on our tracks, horsemen, and breeders, the FTBOA currently expects the breeder and stallion awards program, as modified, to remain on solid financial footing for the foreseeable future as the industry and the world rebuild. The pandemic has also put in sharp relief the fact that Advance Deposit Wagering is an absolutely critical component of our future. A special salute to our breeders, farms, and equine work force here in Marion County and throughout the State of Florida for all the work you did under the stress and uncertainty of this pandemic. You kept the breeding sheds open and operating, and we are all profoundly grateful. Likewise, a tip of the hat to so many others who kept giving their best, including the horse transportation, feed supply, and veterinary folks. Hopefully, we will get better control of this pandemic in the coming months and life in the Florida thoroughbred industry and elsewhere will begin to return to some sort of normalcy. But until then, a big thank you to those who have helped us get through such challenging and unprecedented times. ■

Souper Escape Gets Revenge With Trillium Stakes Win

Two starts back, the Mark Trombettatrained Souper Escape finished second, a length behind winner Another Time in a $77,900 allowance race going seven-and-ahalf furlongs on the Woobine turf on June 6. But the Florida-bred filly turned the tables on Another Time on July 18 while winning the Grade 3 Trillium Stakes by four-and-ahalf lengths in a time of 1:42.78—which was just short of a track record. Freitag set the course mark of 1:42.16 for a mile-and-onesixteenth on the turf in the Sir Barton Stakes on Nov. 26, 2016. Breaking from the inside post with jockey Luis Contreras in the saddle, Souper Escape wasted little time going to the front and had two-and-a-half lengths on Another Time in

The Kevin Attard-trained Starship Jubilee defeated four other fillies and mares, 4-years-old and older, in the $200,000 Ballston Spa at a mile-and-one-sixteenth on the inner turf course. It was the fourth stakes victory in as many starts this year for Starship Jubilee, who was also named the Florida-bred champion turf female and champion older female last year by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association. She won her second consecutive Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf at a mile-andone-sixteenth at Gulfstream Park in January before she won the Grade 3 Suwanee River Stakes at a mile-and-an-eighth on Feb. 8, both at Gulfstream Park. She then won the Grade 2 Hillsborough Stakes at a mile-and-aneighth at Tampa Bay Downs on March 7 before being sent to a farm in Ocala, Fla., for a short break. Starship Jubilee did not have the best of starts upon her return to racing as she hit the outside part of her number six starting gate stall at the beginning of the Ballston Spa. Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano quickly corrected her to the inside but Starship Jubilee appeared to continue to fight her rider while racing into second position behind longshot front-runner North Broadway heading into the clubhouse turn. "[Starship Jubilee] broke sideways and my [right] foot hit the door," Castellano said. "It was painful. With the pain, I tried to rate the horse and I think I grabbed a little too much. It looked like the horse was keen, but she wasn't."
Florida-bred Starship Jubilee
North Broadway opened up ten lengths on Call Me Love (GB) in second with Starship Jubilee another three lengths back in third as they clicked off leisurely fractions of :24.29 for the first quarter-mile and the half in :48.18. North Broadway continued to lead by daylight into the second turn but her margin quickly evaporated when Starship Jubilee and Call Me Love passed her in a rush to her outside before they made the turn for home. Starship Jubilee and Call Me Love took off together into the stretch as Sistercharlie tried to join the fray from third but the top two left the 2-5 favorite behind. Racing inside the final furlong, Starship Jubilee took a slight lead over Call Me Love to her inside with only a neck separating them at the finish. They finished in 1:41.76 on the firm turf and a length-and-a-quarter in front of Sistercharlie in third. Bramble Queen was fourth with North Broadway last. "I had to fight her a little bit. She's such a great horse; to beat Sistercharlie, she's one of the best fillies in the country," Castellano said. "I think we were in the right time and the right place to beat her today. I give all the credit to my horse.

Florida FOCUS "Finally, I decided to be a little more patient and relax the horse. The way the race developed was phenomenal," Castellano continued. "I like the way she did it. We had to take on a number one horse in the country like Sistercharlie. I think it was the right time today and the right place to beat her, not to take anything from my horse. I'm very satisfied with the way she did it today." Attard watched the Ballston Spa from his home base at Woodbine in Ontario and was unable to attend the race due to restrictions concerning the COVID-19 pandemic. Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey saddled Starship Jubilee in Attard’s absence. "Shug and his crew did an incredible job helping me out," Attard said. "Considering the situation with COVID this year, it was hard not to be able to send somebody with your own horse. But she was in great hands and that made the whole experience easier to handle. I'm looking forward to getting her home and evaluating what to do next." "I thought Castellano rode her perfectly," Attard continued. "[North Broadway] opened up and did the job they intended her to do and set the pace up for Sistercharlie. “Sistercharlie was flanking us the whole way and had dead aim on us. I could see [jockey] Johnny Velazquez start to go to work and [Sistercharlie] didn't look like she was picking up the bit yet. The favorite didn't kick in and the one horse [Call Me Love] kept battling back. It looked like we were safe and home, but the one wouldn't lay down and made it a good fight to the finish." Starship Jubilee races for Blue Heaven Farm and was bred in Florida by William P. Sorren. She has now won 18 of 36 career starts and the $110,000 first place check for winning Ballston Spa pushed her to $1,608,667 in career earnings. She is by Indy Wind out of Perfectly Wild, by Forest Wildcat and is a half-sister to stakesplaced runners The Flying Whizzer and Starship Nala. Perfectly Wild was bred to Malibu Moon in 2020. "She's just a special horse,” Attard continued. “She's 7-[years-old] and a lot of horses as

Florida-bred Two Sixty

Two Sixty earned her second stakes victory of the year and her first against graded company July 25 as the 3-year-old Florida-
bred filly won the Grade 3 Selene Stakes at Woodbine Racecourse. The Selene featured a field of seven 3year-old fillies who went a mile-and-a-sixteenth on the Tapeta main track for a purse of US$96,328. Trained by Mark Casse for Gary Barber, Two Sixty won the $125,000 Gasparilla Stakes over seven furlongs at Tampa Bay Downs in her first start of the year on Jan. 18 then fell short in three other starts against added-money rivals. She was fifth in the $100,000 Suncoast Stakes won by Lucrezia at Tampa Bay on Feb. 8 then a dull ninth in the $100,000 Musical Romance Stakes against fellow Floridabreds and winner Lady’s Island at Gulfstream on May 16. In her most recent start before
the Selene, she was fourth behind winner Owlette, who she faced again in the Selene, in the $116,000 Star Shoot Stakes at Woodbine on June 13. But her natural speed to over in the Selene as Two Sixty jumped out to a quick lead from post six and was two lengths clear of 6-5 favorite Owlette in second after a quarter-mile in :24.12. Two Sixty and jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson finished a half-mile in :48.81 and six furlongs in a pedestrian 1:13.36 as they kept a one-length margin on Owlette turning for home. Two Sixty drew off from her challenger down the stretch as 84-1 longshot Saratoga Vision suddenly appeared while rallying from last. But Two Sixty hit the finish line nearly a length in front of Saratoga Vision in second in a final time of 1:45.01 on the fast track. Owlette was third followed by Merveilleux, Diamond Sparkles, Livin in the Six and American Tap. “It was clear on paper that Owlette was going to be pace, but they took the blinkers off. So right off the hop, I wanted to get away and set myself at the front with conviction,” Wilson said. “As we eased into the backstretch, I took a little bit of a hold of her. I glanced between my legs and saw that I had a length or so of daylight that I could ease back and have her take a breather. She pricked her ears as we came around the three-quarter pole and it was great. And then I just waited to hear them… waited to hear them… waited to hear them… waited to hear them… She dug hard, she ran fast and she held them off.”

Racing fans watching Del Mar were treated to an exciting finish in Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes when Florida-bred Collusion Illusion held off a furious late run by Lexitonian to win by a nose. His color has changed. He had soured out on me, but we got him going the right way. I think he earned his way to the Derby.” Cedillo, who won his third stakes of the Del Mar meeting in Shared Belief, said Thousand Words appeared happy to respond to the early speed instructions. “[Trainer Bob Baffert] just told me to warm him up real well, then get him out of there. Then see what happens,” Cedillo said. “[Thousand Words] broke well and I saw I could take the lead, so I did. He was going along there steady, steady, steady. Then we got it done.” With the victory, Thousand Words moved up to number seven on the Derby leaderboard with 83 points as of Aug. 3. Thousand Words was bred in Florida by Amy Tarrant’s Hardacre Farm as a son of Pioneerof the Nile and the Pomeroy mare Pomeroys Pistol. A million dollar purchase as a yearling at Keeneland, Thousand Words has now won four of seven career starts while banking $327,000. ■
Joy’s Rocket Takes Off in My Dear Stakes Team Hanley’s undefeated 2-year-old filly Joy’s Rocket was impressive in her stakes debut at Woodbine Racetrack on Aug. 1, as the Florida-bred took off in the $100,000 My Dear Stakes to win by two-and-three-quarters lengths under Luis Contreras. Joy’s Rocket launched to the lead in the five-and-a-half-furlong Tapeta test and clocked fractions of :21.94 and :45.44 while prompted by Rocket Reload. The Steve Asmussen trainee shook off her main rival in the stretch and won her first stakes outing by nearly three lengths in 1:05.10. Favored Road to Romance pressed threewide early but settled into stalking position behind the front-runners and then made a bid moving into the stretch to get up for second-place, with Rotary rallying to her outside for third. Emmeline rounded out the superfecta with Rocket Reload, supplement Queen Rhonda and Silent Mamba completing the run down. Joy’s Rocket was the 8-5 second choice after winning at first asking over Churchill Downs’s dirt track in sloppy conditions on June 28. Today, she returned $5.50 to win. “She was very professional pretty much

Grade 2 San Felipe on March 7 and an 11thplace finish in the $200,000 Oaklawn Stakes at Oaklawn on April 11, a trip to Kentucky appeared in jeopardy for Thousand Words. Even after finishing second to another Baffert stablemate in Uncle Chuck in the Grade 3 Los Alamitos Derby on July 4 and still ranked in the top 20 on the Derby leaderboard, Thousand Words had certainly lost his luster as a legitimate Derby contender and was by then just hoping to retain a spot in the prestigious race. It was a muddy track and she just went to the lead. I wasn’t too worried because horses with this kind of talent, I think it’s easy to adjust to whichever track they go.” Bred in Florida by Weston Thoroughbreds Training & Sales, Joy’s Rocket is by Anthony’s Cross out of Queenie’s Pride by Special Rate. ■

F
lorida-bred Collusion Illusion became a Grade 1-winner at the track where he won his first graded stakes last year as he held off a late charge by Lexitonian to win Del Mar’s Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes by a short nose Aug. 1. A winner of the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes in his second career start last year at Del Mar, Collusion Illusion took advantage of quick pace in the Bing Crosby for a return trip to the Del Mar winner’s after the six furlong test that offered a purse of $251,500 and a fees-paid berth into the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) to be run in November at Keeneland. Trained by Mark Glatt for Dan J. Agnew, Rodney E.Orr, Jerry Schneider and John V. Xitco, Collusion Illusion and jockey Flavien Prat were in no hurry early in the Bing Crosby and they sat seventh of eight starters but only about three lengths behind a five-horse battle for the lead made up of fellow Florida-bred Anyportinastorm on the rail, Desert Law, Law Abidin Citizen and Fashionably Fast between horses and Wildman Jack on the outside. The speedy fivesome sprinted the first two furlongs in a furious :21.58 and the half-mile in :44.73 with Wildman Jack and Law Abidin Citizen coming out of the turn together as the top survivors of the early sprint barage. Collusion Illusion tried to move into contention for the run for home but had little room from behind the leaders and was forced to change course to the inside in the final furlong. He found a lane on the rail and jumped to a clear lead just a few yards from the finish when Lexitonian burst onto the scene on the far outside. Those two hit the finish together with Lexitonian a nose short of Collusion Illusion in a final time of 1:10.41 on the fast track.

Law Abidin Citizen was third followed in order by Wildman Jack, Heartwood, Fashionably Fast, Anyportinastorm and Desert Law. “It set up nicely for me,” Prat said of the Bing Crosby trip. “They were going fast up front; I could feel it. My horse was handling the dirt well today, too. Better than he usually does. When we turned for home, I had horses in front of me and I was aware the inside was playing fast today so I went down there. I got through and at the eighth pole, I thought I was going to be an easy winner. Then I saw [Lexitonian] on the outside coming and I wasn’t so sure. But we got there.” Collusion Illusion is by Twirling Candy out of Natalie Grace, by First Dude and he was bred in the Sunshine State by Donald R. Dizney. Natalie Grace is also a half-sister to Dizney’s graded stakes-winning stallion Bahamian Squall, who along with First Dude stands at Double Diamond Farm. Although the Bing Crosby set up the way Glatt anticipated it would, he said the race still had a few surprises. “We thought, looking on paper, they were going to go pretty fast,” Glatt said. “I didn’t think my other horse [Law Abidin Citizen] would be that close [early in the race] but he hung in there very tough. [Collusion Illusion] doesn’t like dirt in his face and the way it set up he was going to have to go extremely wide to stay away from it. But the past couple days the rail has been getting better as a place to be and when he darted to the rail I knew he was going to be coming. I got a little worried if he was going to find a place to go, but he was able to and came through in the end.” As the only 3-year-old in the Bing Crosby, Collusion Illusion won for the fifth time in six career starts

EQUINE INDUSTRY EWS EQUINE N Update
Equine Walk of Fame Fundraiser Underway
A
n Equine Walk of Fame is in the works for the sidewalks of the downtown square in Ocala, Fla., for all horse breeds in Marion County, the Horse Capital of the World®. The first sidewalk to be installed with plaques will be in front of the new Hilton Garden Inn located on the east side of the square. The Ocala/Marion County Chamber and Economic Partnership has formed a group within their equine engagement committee to select each Florida-born champion of any breed, other than a thoroughbred, that has won a national or world championship or has been inducted into a breed’s hall of fame. Up to two champions of each breed will be added as funds are raised. The goal is for the plaques for the first sidewalk to be in place by the end of the year. The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association formed a Thoroughbred Walk of Fame Committee to establish the criteria and the order for champion thoroughbreds to be placed. The second location for the Equine Walk of Fame stars is the sidewalk on the west side of the square in front of Mark’s Prime restaurant. Many business deals in the thoroughbred industry in Marion County have occurred over the years at the restaurant. The committee agreed that the location would be a perfect spot, along with an additional sidewalk for additional thoroughbreds. Both sidewalks are scheduled for 2021. The FTBOA committee is led by Bridlewood Farm’s George Isaacs and is comprised of a number of FTBOA members and industry leaders who have been in the industry for decades including Joe O’Farrell of Ocala Stud, Brent and Crystal Fernung of Journeyman Stud, Valerie Dailey of 3D Farm, Tom Ventura and Tod Wojciechowski from the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company, Bonnie Heath III of Bonnie Heath Farm and Greg Wheeler of BridleOaks Farm. Tammy Gantt at the FTBOA spearheads the historical research for each thoroughbred candidate for consideration compiling lists of Eclipse-awarded Horse of the Year honorees and other division champions; classic winners in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes; Breeders’ Cup winners; and Florida Horse of the Year honorees; among other distinguishing achievements such as leading stallions and top broodmares. The committee initially set up criteria to establish which
Florida-breds would be the first to earn a star on the walk. Horses that have been inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame will be the first among the honorees on the first walk. These horses include Needles, Carry Back, Dr. Fager, Ta Wee, Susan’s Girl, Desert Vixen, Foolish Pleasure, Affirmed, Precisionist, Holy Bull, Silver Charm and Skip Away. The committee will begin to narrow the selections for the second walk by the end of the year. Each 2’x3’ bronze plaque costs approximately $2,000 including installation. Each plaque will be in place for the life of the sidewalk and will contain the horse’s name, farm name, breed, the breeder and owner, along with their credentials as honorees.

In order for the project to be funded, the CEP set up a foundation for fundraisers, sponsors and donors. The first fundraiser, “A Brick for your Horse” campaign, kicked-off in August. For $150, any horse, or other pet, can be recognized with a brick on the downtown square. Each brick contains the horse’s name (or other pet), owner or breeder’s name, the birthdate (if preferred) and the breed (if preferred). To order, mail a check for $150 to Foundation CEP, c/o Louisa Barton/Bricks, 310 SE Third Street, Ocala, Fla. 34471. Write on the check what the brick should say (print clearly) and include a phone number. Twenty bricks are ordered at a time and placed in batches. Stonehedge Double Claims First Legs of Florida Sire Stakes By BROCK SHERIDAN

n the 39-year history of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes, there is not much left to accomplish for Gilbert and Marilyn Campbell and their Stonehedge LLC racing and breeding team. Before Aug. 1, they had 12 wins in the series going back to their Blazing Sword winning the 1996 Dr. Fager and Affirmed divisions and including a sweep of the filly division in 2013 by their Scandalous Act. Also on July 20, 2013 Scandalous Act and My Brown Eyed Guy won the Susan’s Girl and Affirmed divisions respectively on the same day. The longtime Florida breeders took their second Florida Sire Stakes double on Aug. 1 at Gulfstream Park when their Go Jo Jo Go won the $100,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Desert Vixen and Breeze on By took the $100,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Dr. Fager. Go a fast pace to run at later. Princess Secret and Lyrical came out of the far turn in tandem but 5-2 second choice Freak was on the move on the outside as Go Jo Jo Go was beginning to obscurely pass horses farther back in the field. Freak took the lead from Princess Secret as they passed the eighth pole but the latter fought back on the rail to take the lead with less than 100 yards to the finish. That is when Go Jo Jo Go suddenly appeared on the outside with a rush to race under the wire a lengthand-a-half in front of Princess Secret in second. Freak was a nose back in third followed by Alluramore, Sophisticurl, Lyrical, Tamiami and Social Exclusion. “They don’t move the calendar for the [Sire] Stakes. So if you have a horse who can run a bit, even if they’re a maiden, it’s worth taking a shot,” trainer Michael Yates said after the victory by Go Jo Jo Go. Go Jo Jo Go is out of Flashy Flirt, by Gulch and earned $60,000 for the win to increase her career revenues to $66,800. The final time for the six furlongs was 1:11.47 on the fast track. BREEZE ON BY STAYS UNDEFEATED IN DR. FAGER
As big a surprise as Go Jo Jo Go was in the Desert Vixen, Breeze on By entered the $100,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes as the 7-10 favorite and did not disappoint with a one-length victory ahead of Gatsby in second in 1:10.85 for the six furlongs. A field of nine went to the starting gate for the Dr. Fager and Breeze on By and jockey Emisael Jaramillo were quick to establish their preferred running position at the head of the pack after breaking from post two. After a first quarter-mile in :22.37, Breeze on By was a half-length in front of 14-1 shot Boca Boy but began to leave that one behind as they went around the far turn. Meanwhile Gatsby was on the move on the outside and was on even terms with Breeze on By when they passed the quarter-mile marker after a :45.68 half-mile. It appeared Gatsby was about to get up for a serious challenge in deep stretch but the son of Brethren drifted out in the final furlong and had to settle for second, a length behind Breeze on By N. Stakes for eligible 2-year-olds started off with a bang as Stonehedge LLC homebred Go Jo Jo Go won the Desert Vixen at odds of 21-1 to pay $45.40 to win with jockey Leonel Reyes aboard. The following race saw the green and white silks of Stonehedge LLC head into the winners’ circle for a second time after Breeze On By won the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Dr. Fager as the odds-on favorite. To add to the big day for Stonehedge, the victory by Go Jo Jo Go completed a Khozan-sired exacta with second-place finisher Princess Secret that improved the already accomplished stature of the Jouneyman Stud stallion, of which the Campbell’s are also part owners. Go Jo Jo Go was winless in three starts coming into the Desert Vixen having lost her rider in her first start in May that was just the beginning of challenges for chesnut filly. In both of her next two races against special weight maidens at Gulfstream on May 29 and July 11, she was hit by a foe out of the starting gate resulting in third and fifth-place finishes respectively. She did not have much improved luck at the start of the Desert Vixen Saturday as Sophisticurl from post four broke into Go Jo Jo Go starting in post three which resulted in the eventual winner being last of eight in the run down the backstretch. A bit of good fortune for Go Jo Jo Go began to develop early in the Desert Vixen however, as evenmoney favorite Princess Secret sprinted to a one-length lead ahead of longshot Lyrical in second as they went the first quarter-mile in a quick :22.59, giving Go Jo Jo

FTBOA Board of Directors the coronavirus pandemic, the meeting will be held via Zoom only. Regular members will receive notice by email with instructions on how to register for the meeting. If you are a regular member and you have not provided the FTBOA with your current email address, please contact the FTBOA immediately. For 2020, there are five director vacancies on the FTBOA board to be filled, for three-year terms running until October 2023. Pursuant to the Association’s bylaws, the current board of directors nominated the following five candidates for these vacancies: (1) Fred Brei; (2) Bobby Jones (3) Milan Kosanovich; (4) Francis Vanlangendonck; and (5) Dr. Fred Yutani. Each candidate agreed to run and to serve as an FTBOA Director. The FTBOA bylaws also allow a candidate to self-nominate by circulating a petition and obtaining 25 member signatures. No such petition was filed. As provided in the Association’s bylaws, because there are only five candidates for the five director vacancies, members will not be required to cast ballots and these five candidates will be deemed elected to office upon the presiding officer calling the FTBOA’s Annual Meeting to order. Current board members Greg Wheeler and Barry Berkelhammer end their terms at the start of the meeting. Here is some information about the candidates. FRED BREI JACKS OR BETTER FARM

Brei established the Ocala-based Jacks or Better Farm in 1997 with his wife Jane. Brei bought his first broodmare in 1972 and was actively involved in the Illinois breeding and rac-
ing industries before moving to Marion County. A native of the Chicago area, Brei was a builder and real estate developer for 30 years. He also served as chief executive officer of Canterbury Corporation, a long-term retirement facility located in Crystal Lake, Ill. The Breis primarily breed to race on the 88-acre Jacks or Better Farm and enjoyed quick success. Jacks or Better Farm’s Midas Eyes, named the Florida-bred champion sprinter of 2004, marked the first Floridabred champion for the Breis and many more have followed. In 2001 and 2004, the Breis received the FTBOA Needles Award as the outstanding small breeding operation. In addition to Midas Eyes, the farm has been represented by Florida-bred multiple graded stakes winners Jackson Bend, Fort Loudon, and 2010 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly and Eclipse Award winning champion Awesome Feather. Additional stakes winners include Awesome Banner, Bayou’s Lassie, C. Zee, Dogwood Trail, Radical Riley and Shivaree. His racing program is strongly supported by horses he runs in the Florida Sire Stakes series including winners Ballet Diva, Best Plan Yet, Fellowship, Garter and Tie, Redbud Road, Sing Praises and Twotwentyfive A. Three of his horses have swept the series including Awesome Feather, Fort Loudon and Jackson Bend. The Breis own Floridabred stallion Awesome of Course. Jacks or Better was the leading owner in 2014. Brei currently serves on the FTBOA board as a past president and was most recently on the executive committee as treasurer.
Bobby Jones has been a mainstay in the thoroughbred community in Ocala for more than 30 years and has served some 25 years with the Florida Farm Managers, Inc. He served as president for more than a decade and has served as Chairman of the
Board for the last nine years. Jones is currently the owner and manager of Bobby Jones Equine, LLC, a 36acre thoroughbred farm where he keeps between 10 to12 broodmares for breeding in the thoroughbred commercial market. He also conducts sales preparation and consigns thoroughbreds of all ages at public auction. He offers boarding, foaling, breeding, breaking, training, and rehabilitations, which are enhanced by the swimming facilities located on the farm. Jones also offers bloodstock services with pedigree analysis for clients in search of stallion and broodmare mating consultations. Jones also strongly supports youth education serving on the Business Advisory Council for Agriculture as part of Career and Technical Education (vocational training) in the Marion County Public Schools. Jones has worked with local high schools to teach breeding, foaling and prepping for sales which has led to the successful sale of several student project horses. He currently serves on the FTBOA board and previously served from 2002 through 2004. FILE PHOTO

Summerfield is located on 80 acres where the Vanlangendoncks offer boarding, sales prep, bloodstock consulting, pedigree analysis, mating recommendations, evaluations, appraisals, sales recommendations and pinhooking partnerships. Francis and his team annually attend all major yearling and mixed auctions, conducted at Ocala Breeders’ Sales, Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland in Florida, Kentucky and New York. They are habitually among the leading consignors in North America with nearly $12.6 million in sales in 2018 and among leading overall consignors with
DR. FRED YUTANI Dr. Yutani was born in California, raised in Detroit and attended high school in California. He received his undergraduate degree in chemistry at the University of Southern California and graduated from the George Washington University Medical School. He did his post graduate training at the Cleveland Clinic and served two years as a doctor in the United States Army. He is married to Sara Lynn whom he met in Washington DC. Yutani and his wife came to Ocala and Marion County in 1972 drawn by the climate and horses with a desire to not raise their children in a big city and he started his medical practice in Internal Medicine at the same time. In a familiar story, they had pleasure horses initially and their three children (Kevin, Marti and Tommi) each showed hunters through high school. An interest developed in thoroughbreds and they became breeders around 1983. Over the years Sara became a licensed horse trainer, so, in addition to breeding, training was added to their program. Most of the horses were sold as 2-year-olds in training. Of the horses sold, they were breeders or co-breeders of stakes horses such as My Nichole, who won the Desert Vixen Stakes and was the dam of Three Ring, multiple stakes winning Daisies and Nites, stakes winner Right This Way, Group 3-placed Oh Mambo Girl and Stoneyer, the 2-year-old and 3-year-old imported horse of the year in Puerto Rico. Horses trained and resold include Imawildandcrazyguy, who was fourth in the 2007 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Able Buck, who was second in the Withers (G2). He currently serves on the FTBOA board. ■ FILE PHOTO

Among the sales highlights of 2018 was a colt by Curlin that commanded a final bid of $1.8 million at the Keeneland September Sale and a colt by Triple Crown winner American Pharoah who dropped the gavel at $1 million at the Saratoga Select Sale. Plenty of Summerfield’s graduates go on to show talent. Summerfield’s current progenies include Gamine, a multiple Grade 1 winning filly by Into Mischief who broke the stakes record in the G1 Acorn at Belmont and dominated the G1 Test tying the stakes record at Saratoga; Speech, a GSW filly by Mr. Speaker and a Florida-bred who broke the stakes record in the G1 Central Bank Ashland at Keeneland; and Uncle Chuck, a colt by Uncle Mo who won the G3 Los Alamitos Derby in his second start for Bob Baffert. Some of the more outstanding horses sold by Summerfield include Shang Shang Shang, a G2 Norfolk Stakes winner at Royal Ascot; successful pinhook, Champagne Room, G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner and 2 year old Eclipse Champion; MGSW and new sire Upstart, earner of $1.7 million; Xtra Heat, Eclipse Champion winner and Hall of Fame inductee and MG1W of $2,390,000; and MGSW sire Lion Heart who earned $1.3 million. Macho Again won the Jim Dandy (G2) and New Orleans (G2) and placed in the Whitney (G1) and Woodward (G1). The daughter of former Florida stallion Exchange Rate, Be Fair won the Lake George (G3). His 2009 stakes winners included Pray for Action and Izzy Rules. His other stakes winners include Kays and Jays, a 3-year-old filly by Macho Uno, Darley OBS Sprint winner Praying for Cash, and Its True Love. Kosanovich has experience serving on nearly a dozen corporate and charity boards and previously served on the FTBOA board along with the governance and audit committees. STAR 32 THE FLORIDA HORSE • SEPTEMBER 2020
By JOANN GUIDRY horoughbred racehorses are often remembered for a signature performance as much as for their overall racing careers. Mention Secretariat and even the non-racing fan can recount his mythical 31length Belmont Stakes (Grade 1) victory. For Floridabred Afleet Alex, his defining moment came in the 2005 Preakness Stakes (G1). After a third to Giacomo in the Kentucky Derby (G1), Afleet Alex went into the Preakness Stakes two weeks later as one of the favorites. He was justifying that role, charging seemingly to the lead in full drive on the outside as the field approached the top of the stretch. Then in the blink of an eye, Scrappy T, struck with lefthanded whip by his jockey Ramon Dominguez, veered right into Afleet Alex’s path. Clipping heels with Scrappy T, Afleet Alex stumbled to his knees, front legs spread-eagle with his nose inches from the ground. Afleet Alex’s jockey, Jeremy Rose, was thrown forward but grabbed a handful of mane while somehow keeping his feet in the stirrups and remarkably stayed on. Then in a move that would make any Olympic gymnast envious, Afleet Alex instantly popped back upright, aimed for the opening on the inside, ran down Scrappy T and won by four-and-three-quarters lengths. With his ears pricked as though nothing had happened, Afleet Alex stopped the clock in 1:55.4 after one of the fastest final three-sixteenths in Preakness history. In one of the most amazing feats of equine athleticism, Afleet Alex became the seventh Florida-bred to win the Preakness Stakes as he joined Carry Back (1961), Affirmed (1978), Codex (1980), Aloma’s Ruler (1982), Gate Dancer (1984) and Silver Charm (1997).

Devers and Silvertand did indeed become foal-sharing partners on several mares; all were expecting Northern Afleet foals. At the time, Northern Afleet was standing at Double Diamond Farm in Ocala. The foals would be bred in Silvertand’s name but when the foals were weaned, a coin flip would decide who got which foals. Silvertand moved the mares to Classic Oaks Farm and on May 9, 2002, Maggy Hawk, by Hawkster, foaled a bay Northern Afleet colt. And the drama of Afleet Alex’s life began. When Maggy Hawk was unable to nurse her colt, Silvertand’s then 9-yearold daughter Lauren was among those who fed him milk from a sterilized beer bottle fitted with a nipple for 12 days. A nurse mare was then located to take over the care of Maggy Hawk’s foal. When Devers asked for the coin toss to be moved up a month later, Silvertand agreed. Devers won the coin toss; Maggy Hawk’s colt and his nurse mare were moved to Hickory Lane Farm, which Devers had previously owned and now managed. Months later in October 2002, Silvertand was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon and liver cancer. He was given two, maybe three months to live. Just before the colt Devers won in the coin toss became a yearling, he was sold privately to Joe Allen. Subsequently he was sent to Williston-based Robert Scanlon to break and train. On behalf of Allen, Scanlon consigned the colt to the 2004 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale. Trainer Tim Ritchey purchased him for Cash is King LLC for $75,000. It was the first purchase for the newly formed Cash is King, a racing partnership headed by managing partner Chuck Zacney. The latter named the Northern Afleet – Maggy Hawk colt Afleet Alex after his son.
SPREADING JOY
In but his third start, Afleet Alex won the Sanford Stakes (G2) by five-and-a-quarter lengths on July 29, 2004 at Saratoga. He encored that with a neck-victory in the Hopeful Stakes (G1) three weeks later at Saratoga. Afleet Alex closed out his juvenile season with seconds in the Champagne Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Stakes (G1) at Lone Star Park. He banked $680,800 on the season. Remember that death sentence that Silvertand had received in October 2002? After nine surgeries and aggressive chemotherapy, Silvertand had defied the odds to see Afleet Alex become a stakes winner. The Cash is King partners invited Silvertand to join them at Belmont Park for the Champagne Stakes. From there on, Silvertand was along for the joyful ride provided by Afleet Alex. Then Zacney heard about a young woman named Alex Scott, who was 7-years-old when she was diagnosed with brain cancer, and had opened a lemonade stand in her front yard to raise money for cancer research. Zacney pledged $5,000 to the Alex’s Lemonade Stand fund and followed that by donating a portion of AFLEET ALEX 2002 bay horse by Northern Afleet – Afleet Alex’s earnings and proceeds Maggy Hawk, by Hawkster from his merchandising materials, Breeder: John Martin Silvertand Owner: Cash is King LLC which carried a lemon logo. But subsequent X-rays 2005 Eclipse Award – Champion 3-Year-Old Colt revealed an abnormal wedge-shaped section of bone adjacent to the original fracture line. The decision was made to retire Afleet Alex. In his amazing career, Afleet Alex posted eight wins, six of them graded stakes, two seconds and two thirds in graded stakes in 12 starts. He won those eight races by an average of six-and-a-half lengths, at six different distances from five-anda-half furlongs to a mile-and-a-half. Afleet Alex retired with career earnings of $2,765,800, entering stud in 2006 at Gainesway Farm and where he still stands today. Silvertand lived to see Afleet Alex go to stud; he died on January 7, 2007. But the joy that Afleet Alex brought to so many people lives on. Still to this day, mention Afleet Alex and people will smile when they tell you the story of his astounding Preakness Stakes win. ■

■ Editor’s Note: If you would like an English translation of this column, please contact Brock Sheridan, Editor-in-Chief at 352.732.8858 or email at: bsheridan@ftboa.com

Peter Vegso accepts the 2-year old filly champion award for KP Dreamin from amongst his broodmare band including her dam Litigating at his farm in Ocala in August. Farm and office visits to award winners was FTBOA’s way to show appreciation for each champion who could not be recognized onstage at the annual Gala. 42 THE FLORIDA HORSE • SEPTEMBER 2020
began 20 years ago thanks largely in part to the support of the FTBOA. The sale of the horses throughout the years to the community funded the Marion Cultural Alliance which issues grants to arts and cultural organizations. Due to the pandemic, FTC has been unable to host any fundraisers in 2020, however, items donated for the Gala auctions planned for March, will be available as a fundraiser in October coinciding with the Ocala Breeders’ Sale. FTC encourages industry members to support the fundraiser or to make a donation to support the programs in 2020. FTC scholarships were awarded to students for the 2020/2021. Students who are FTBOA members, the children of FTBOA members, or the employees or children of employees of FTBOA members are eligible to apply annually. ■
