n pages 20-23 of this August issue of The Florida Horse, we feature Medina Spirit and his victory in the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade 1) at Churchill Downs on May 1. Bred in Florida by Gail Rice and owned by Amr Zedan’s Zedan Racing Stables Inc., the almost black son of Protonico out of Mongolian Changa, by Brilliant Speed led the mile-and-a-quarter classic from start to finish to win by a half-length ahead of Mandaloun in second and third-place finisher Hot Rod Charlie, giving Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert a record seven victories in the Run for the Roses while also becoming the seventh Kentucky Derby winner bred in the Sunshine State. He joins Needles (1956), Carry Back (1961), Foolish Pleasure (1975), Affirmed (1978), Unbridled (1990) and Silver Charm (1997) while adding to Florida’s place in the record books as the birthplace of more Kentucky Derby winners than any other state, province or country outside of Kentucky. However, on the morning of May 9, all of those accolades, records, celebrations and the emotional highs that come with winning America’s oldest continuously run sporting event crashed and were suddenly jeopardized when Baffert announced that a urine sample taken from Medina Spirit following the Derby had tested positive for the therapeutic steroid betamethasone, a substance permitted in Kentucky— but may not be used in thoroughbreds within 14 days prior to a race. Any trace of the Class C Substance found in a horse on race day is a violation of the rules as set forth by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and considered grounds for disqualification. The positive test for betamethasone was confirmed in the results of a split sample according to a statement issued by Baffert’s attorney Craig Robertson on June 2. This was the first such violation committed by the connections of a Kentucky Derby winner since 1968 when a post-race urinalysis produced by winner Dancer’s Image resulted in a positive result for phenylbutazone. Dancer’s Image was disqualified by

Kentucky officials and Forward Pass was declared the winner—a decision that was upheld by the Kentucky Court of Appeals after four years of litigation. Since the initial news regarding Medina Spirit broke, Churchill Downs management has banned Baffert from racing under the Twin Spires™ for two years, and the New York Racing Association—which operates Aqueduct, Belmont Park and Saratoga Racecourse—also issued a suspension. On July 14, however, a Brooklyn judge nullified the NYRA suspension on grounds that Baffert was not allowed to respond to the allegations. That ruling has no effect on the Churchill Downs suspension nor any possible ruling yet to come from the KHRC. For any of us who have followed, covered, bet on, regulated or participated in thoroughbred racing for any significant time, it appears a certainty that Medina Spirit will eventually be disqualified from his Derby victory by the KHRC. Baffert will likely be suspended as well—especially given it was his second positive test for betamethasone in Kentucky in an eight-month span after 2020 Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1)-winner Gamine was disqualified for the same violation with the same substance. As of this writing in late July, the KHRC has not yet set a date for a hearing for Baffert, Zedan and Medina Spirit. And should such a hearing rule to disqualify Medina Spirit as the Derby winner, it is expected that the decision will wind up in courts for as long or longer than the Dancer’s Image case. As a result, Medina Spirit continues to retain his title as the winner of the 2021 Kentucky Derby until ruled otherwise. That remains official in the records and charts kept by The Jockey Club and can be confirmed on their official website, Equibase.com. Medina Spirit is still recognized as winning the Derby by a half-length and his earnings continue to reflect the $1.86 million first-place prize. Therefore, Medina Spirit continues to be recognized by The Florida Horse as the seventh Florida-bred winner of a Kentucky Derby on pages 20-23 of this issue. ■

Florida Focus Bennett Top Canadian-Born Thoroughbred Trainer after Gulfstream Win

Gerald Bennett saddled the 3,975th winner of his career April 23 at Gulfstream Park, becoming the winningest Canadian-born thoroughbred trainer of all time. The 77-year-old trainer saddled Tampa Bay Downs shipper Baby Boomer ($12.40) for a victory in race three to pass Frank Merrill Jr., a Canadian Horse Hall of Famer who won 19 Canadian championships and led all North American trainers three times by raceswon, as well as winning four Gulfstream titles between 1955-1980. Bennett, a Springhill, Nova Scotia native, began his training career in Canada in 1976 saddling horses alongside Merrill, who passed away in 1990. Bennett once again dominated at Tampa with a meet-leading 56 winners this year. “I just go and try to buy young horses. We haven’t got to the Kentucky Derby, but we’ve won a lot of stakes here and there,” Bennett said. “I’ve never had anyone pay a lot of money for a horse. We usually buy for $17,000-$25,000 and hope to get lucky. Sooner or later, the harder you work, you might get lucky and someday get to the Derby. C Z Rocket Defeats Oaklawn Sprint King Whitmore Again in Count Fleet Winning a Grade 3 sprint is a notable accomplishment by any measure but to do so against Whitmore at Oaklawn increases the notoriety. The Count Fleet had a field of seven 3-year-olds and older who went six furlongs. After losing to Whitmore by two-and-three-quarters lengths in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Nov. 7 at Keeneland to close out his campaign last year, the Peter Millertrained C Z Rocket has now defeated Whitmore twice in two meetings in 2021. C Z Rocket defeated Whitmore by a neck in the $200,000 Hot Springs Stakes on March 13 at Oaklawn to halt a four-race winning streak by the latter going back to 2017 in that six furlong test. Whitmore had also won the Count Fleet in three of the last four years with his only blemish coming when second to that year’s champion sprinter, Mitole, in the 2019 renewal. After the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and the Hot Springs, the Count Fleet was the rubber match between the two with C Z Rocket now having the one-race edge while earning $300,000 and increasing his career bankroll to $1,311,641. That ranked him at No. 99 on the list of the all-time richest Florida-breds behind Richman with $1,314,360 and ahead of Caledonia Road with $1,307,800. No Parole jumped out to set the pace among the seven 3-year-olds and older in the Count Fleet through a quarter-mile in :21.92 while a length in front of Strike Power in second with Whitmore and Mr. Jagermeister tucked in behind the leaders. Meanwhile C Z Rocket was sixth of seven, about five lengths back. Moving into the turn, C Z Rocket and Florent Geroux had one horse beat while racing on the outside and about two-and-a-half lengths farther behind. Strike Power and No Parole came out of the turn together after a :45.35 half-mile with Mr. Jagermeister to their outside as Whitmore looked for a seam while behind those three. Meanwhile, Geroux had C Z Rocket in full gear while racing six wide and the 7-year-old gelding gunned for the lead with an impressive move on the outside. Whitmore found running room at the top of the stretch but C Z Rocket had the advantage and the momentum in the middle of the track. ■

C Z Rocket drew clear to win by two lengths in front of Whitmore in second with Empire of Gold third as they finished the six furlongs in 1:09.62 on the fast track. “Great trip. All the speed was what it looked like on the pp’s,” Geroux said. “Tried to find a nice rhythm with him and when he was ready to go, I just tipped him out and tried to run everyone down. “I got [Whitmore] again. Two nice horses. My horse was a little bit unlucky with the trip in the Breeders’ Cup. Whitmore had a great trip that day. They are very similar. Looks like my horse was a little bit better today.” C Z Rocket paid $6 to win as the 2-1 second choice. Whitmore was favored at even money. C Z Rocket has now won 11 of 25 starts with two seconds and two thirds. Since being claimed for $40,000 by Miller and owner Tom Kagele at Oaklawn on April 30 last year after a fifth-place finish, C Z Rocket has won six of seven starts with his only loss coming when second in the Breeders’ Cup. C Z Rocket is by City Zip out of stakes-placed, Florida-bred mare Successful Sarah, by the Florida-bred stallion Successful Appeal. In addition to C Z Rocket, Successful Sarah has also produced stakes-placed City Success. C Z Rocket is a graduate of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Open Sale held in June of 2016 where he was consigned by Stephens Thoroughbreds and purchased by Frank Fletcher Racing Operations for a then sale record of $800,000 after working an eighth-mile in :10.20 at the under tack session. He made his first 17 starts for Fletcher before Miller and Kagele took him in the aforementioned claim. ■

Anyportinastorm Wins Second Lost in the Fog Stakes

Florida-bred Anyportinastorm, while making his first start of 2021, won the $75,000 Lost in the Fog Stakes at Golden Gate Fields April 24 for the second time in his career. The 7-year-old son of City Zip won the 2019 Lost in the Fog Stakes, named for the multiple graded stakes-winning Florida-bred who ended his career with 11 wins in 14 starts and just shy of a million dollars in earnings with $978,099. Andrew “Andy” Cant With profound sadness we announce the passing of Ocala horseman Andrew Charles Cant, 64, on May 24, 2021 in Gainesville, Fla., due to complications after heart surgery. Andy’s departure leaves a huge void in the lives of all who knew him. He was known for his quick wit, infectious smile and his kind, compassionate spirit. He was truly happy for the success of others and never had a bad word to say about anyone. After having been at several racetracks on his home turf, the Northwest, Andy moved his family to Ocala 20 years ago. He first worked for Jerry Bailey training 2-year-olds, then managed Classics Oaks Farm and Ben-D Farm before striking out on his own five years ago. At the Cant Ranch, he and Susy bred, raced, trained and sold thoroughbreds alongside dogs, cats, chickens, and at times, other assorted animals. Andy was in his element there—especially when his girls came home to visit.

Andy’s involvement with thoroughbreds in no way took away the fact that he was a cowboy first and foremost—he is in the Northwest Rodeo Hall of Fame as a bull rider and still holds the record for most consecutive rides. Andy was a lot of things: consummate horseman, great storyteller, husband, father but most of Andrew “Andy” Cant Family Photo all a friend to all who knew him. He was a man of his word and his handshake was his contract. Andy is survived by his wife Susy, daughters Jane and Addie, mother Myrna (Peter) Gibson, sister Caroline (Steve), brother Danny and many nieces and nephews. ■ ■

Anyportinastorm is out of La Defense, Wild Again and was bred in Florida by 2019 Needles Small Breeder Award WinnerSally J. Andersen. He is a graduate of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales 2016 Spring Sale where de Meric Sales consigned him and Alistair Roden Bloodstock purchased him for $320,000. He has won more than half of his nine races at Golden Gate with a record of five wins and two thirds. ■

Well Defined Wins Big Drama EARNS $25,000 FLORIDA SIRE STAKES BONUS

Owned and trained by Kathleen O’Connell, Well Defined won the $75,000 Big Drama for Florida-bred 3-year-old and older at Gulfstream Park on May 1. Well Defined also earned a $25,000 win bonus for Florida Sire Stakes eligible starters presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association in the seven furlong test. Ridden by Emisael Jaramillo, Well Defined drew clear to win by four-and-a-half lengths in a time of 1:22.30 on the fast track. As the even money favorite, Well Defined paid $4.20 to win. Well Defined is by With Distinction out of Fru Fru, by Medaglia d’Oro and he was bred by Stonehedge LLC. He now has a record of seven wins, two seconds and three thirds with earnings of $661,027. He was among the top Florida-bred 2-year-olds in 2018 having won the $400,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes In Reality by seven-and-ahalf lengths at Gulfstream in 2018 before finishing out of the money the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile won by Game Winner at Churchill. He was also second in the $200,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Affirmed that year won by Garter and Tie. ■

Last Judgment Takes Pimlico Special With Start to Finish Victory

Last Judgment won his second Grade 3 stakes and third addedmoney victory in five starts this year as the Florida-bred gelding won the $237,500 Pimlico Special Match Series at Pimlico May 14. The Pimlico Special saw a field of ten 3-year-olds and older go a mile-and-three-sixteenths on the fast track and just as he had done in his two previous wins this year, Last Judgment led from start to finish. Last Judgment and jockey Jose Ortiz led by a length-and-a-half through fractions of :23.83, :47.60 and 1:11.54 before drawing off in the run for home, eventually winning by a length-and-three-quarters ahead of Modernist in second with Fearless third. “I had a good position,” Ortiz said. “I knew that if he broke well from the gate I could get to the lead nicely. Or if he didn’t break well I could sit second. But he broke really good.” “It was a nice job by [trainer] Mike [Maker]. He had him ready. The horse relaxed well. When I asked him he was there for me. That’s all you can ask for.” Last Judgment paid $11.80 to win at odds of 9-2. Last Judgment is owned by Michael Dubb, Steve Hornstock, Bethlehem Stable LLC and Nice Guys Stables and trained by Mike Maker. Hornstock claimed Last Judgment for $62,500 in October at Belmont Park out of a winning effort against second level optional claiming allowance horses going six-and-a-half furlongs. “Very classy horse. We like the way he’s responded on that stretch out. Fabulous [claim] by these guys,” Maker said. “He’s run well for us going a mile-and-an-eighth. I was glad to stretch him out and hoped to get a softer pace going longer. I was a little concerned about the outside post, but he doesn’t care for the dirt in his face, so he was going to be in the clear anyway. If someone was hell-bent on the lead, so be it.” Last Judgment is by Congrats out of Fantasy Forest, by Forestry and was bred in Florida by Woodford Thoroughbreds. He has now won eight of 18 career starts with a second and a third and has banked $490,465. ■

Florida-bred Shifty She Upsets Powder Break for First Stakes Win Pedigree Partners LLC’s Florida-bred Shifty She held off the late challenge by 8-5 favorite Morning Molly to win the $75,000 Powder Break by a neck May 15 at Gulfstream Park. It was the first career stakes win and fourth in six career starts for the Saffie Joseph Jr. trainee who defeated eight other fillies and mares to win at a mile on the turf in the Powder Break. Shifty She and jockey Edwin Gonzalez broke well from post eight and settled into third behind the Joseph-trained Katama Moonlight. Shifty She went after Katama Moonlight with a two-wide move and the pair turned for home together but Shifty She had the momentum and was a length-and-a-half clear midway for home before Morning Molly came with her late run. They finished the one mile on the firm turf in 1:34.62. Morning Molly was second, three-quarters of a length in front of Florida-bred Mo of the West in third. Shifty She is by Gone Astray out of Perilous Hope, by Strong Hope and she was bred by Chris Pallas and George Klein. She has now earned $129,890 from her four wins in six starts. ■

Sound Machine Heard in Musical Romance Second to Pacific Gale two starts back in the Grade 3 Hurricane Bertie at Gulfstream on March 20 going six-and-a-half furlongs, Sound Machine relished the easier competition to win the $75,000 Musical Romance Stakes at the same distance on May 29, also at Gulfstream. The Musical Romance is for Florida-bred fillies and mares, 3years-old and older and also offered a $25,000 win bonus for Florida

With Edgard Zayas aboard, Sound Machine sat third early before bumping a rival and losing position past the five-eighths marker. But she remained resilient and took advantage of an opening on the rail while turning for home and surged to the front. She drew clear to win by nearly three lengths in a time of 1:17.74 on the fast track. Sound Machine paid $6.40 to win as the 2-1 favorite. “Early on it looked like she would get beat, but Edgard found room,” trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said. “Today, she showed a new dimension. She kicked in and showed a lot of determination. Normally, she’s a little fragile, mentally, she can’t handle that adversity. I was

Beem Named as Next Tampa Bay Downs Announcer OLDSMAR, FL. – Jason Beem, who has called races at numerous thoroughbred tracks since 2006, has been hired as the announcer at Tampa Bay Downs. He began on June 30, the first day of the track’s two-day Summer Festival of Racing. The 41-year-old University of Washington graduate also announces at Grants Pass Downs in Oregon and this year called his third season at Colonial Downs in New Kent, Va. At Tampa Bay Downs, he replaces Richard Grunder, who retired on May 2 after 37 years and more than 37,000 races at the Oldsmar oval. ■ Florida Focus continues on page14

Souper Stonehenge Stops Pink Lloyd’s Streak in Jacques Cartier For the first time in five years, Canadian juggernaut Pink Lloyd is not the reigning champion in the Grade 3 Jacques Cartier Stakes at Woodbine as Florida-bred Souper Stonehenge won the 2021 renewal June 20. The Jacques Cartier, a six furlong test over Woodbine’s main Tapeta course with a purse of US$125,343, this year attracted a field of six 4-year-olds and older with Pink Lloyd going off as the 6-5 favorite having won the race four times from 2017-20. Readyforprimetime set the early pace while Souper Stonehenge sat just behind him in second as Pink Lloyd was last of six after a first quarter in :22.72. Souper Stonehenge took over before they made the top of the stretch and began to draw away as Readyforprimetime dropped back. Pink Lloyd made a big run to finish second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Malibu Secret in third. The final time on the all-weather suface was 1:08.89, which was just .84 off of Pink Lloyd’s track record set in the 2018 Jacques Cartier. Trained by Mark Casse, Souper Stonehenge paid $5 to win as the 3-2 second choice. “Going into this race, I breezed this horse about four times and I think he’s a world beater at Woodbine,” Husbands said. “This horse is the real deal right now. “I rode him as the best horse in the race. I respect ‘The Boss.’ Any time you can beat Pink Lloyd at Woodbine Racetrack, especially sprinting, he’s the world beater, he’s the champion here. So I knew it would take a real Pink Lloyd to beat this horse today.” Souper Stonehenge won for the first time in five starts this year with his best finish in 2021 coming when second to Zenden in the $75,000 Pelican Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 13. He was also third in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap at Aqueduct won by Mischevious Alex on April 3 before finishing fifth in a third condition, $100,000 optional claiming allowance won by Looking at Bikinis at Belmont on April 24 in what was his previous start before the Cartier. For his career, Souper Stonehenge has won $271,587 for owner Live Oak Plantation, who also bred the 5-year-old gelding as Live Oak Stud. He has won four of 15 career starts with four seconds and a third. Shea D Summer Wires in Game Face Shea D Boys Stable’s Florida-bred Shea D Summer broke best of all from post three and jockey Jaramillo Emisael never looked back as they led from start to finish to win the $75,000 Game Face Stakes at Gulfstream Park on June 5. The Game Face was a six-and-a-half furlong test for 3-year-old fillies. At the top of the stretch, the dark bay filly separated from the field and was never threatened as Shea D Summer finished two-and-a-half lengths ahead of a slow starting Competitive Speed in second while Mon Petit Chou was another length back in third. The final time on the fast track was 1:17.17. Shea D Summer paid $9 to win. Trained by Carlos David, Shea D Summer earned her second career stakes victory after winning the $60,000 Juvenile Fillies Sprint at Gulfstream Park West going six-and-a-half furlongs in the slop on Nov. 14. Shea D Summer earned $45,570 for the win to push her career earnings to $121,036 while winning half of her six starts with a second. when the race was taken off the turf. While the race occurred in New Jersey, it resembled a Florida-bred stake as four of the seven starters were bred in the Sunshine State including Tracy Ann’s Legacy, Miss Auramet, Honey I’m Good and No Mercy Percy, who was entered with the main track only stipulation. Owned by David Melin, Leon Ellman and Laurie Plesa, Miss Auramet has been trained by Edward Plesa for most of her four-year career excluding a four-race stint with Jorge Duarte Jr. at Belmont, Delaware Park and Laurel in 2020. Edward Plesa sent Miss Auramet to O’Connell at Monmouth Park as he maintains his base in South Florida and according to O’Connell sent simple instructions. “Don’t mess it up,” O’Connell said while laughing as she recalled the conversation with her good friend. With Dylan Davis aboard, Miss Auramet broke from post three and was just off a trio of early leaders in Tracy Ann’s Legacy, Beaux Arts and 2-1 favorite Honey I’m Good. As expected, they clicked off a furious first quarter mile in :22.01 as Miss Auramet began to find room between horses while running around the far turn. Miss Auramet went to the front as they passed the quarter-pole and had a two-length margin inside the final eighth-mile that she took to the finish. She completed the course in :57.60 as Bronx Beauty finished second, six lengths faster than No Mercy Percy in third. Miss Auramet returned $9.40 to win at odds of 7-2. Miss Auramet has now won nine of 22 career starts with six seconds and three thirds with earnings of $416,090. Miss Auramet is a 5-year-old daughter of Uncaptured out of Hello Rosie, by Yes It’s True and she was bred Marion G. Montanari. She passed through the auction ring at Ocala Breeders’ Sales twice. Summerfield sold her for $47,000 to Hot Scot Racing Stable at the 2017 October Yearling Sale and Julie Davies consigned her to the 2018 OBS Spring Sale where her current ownership team paid $135,000. ■

Gonzalez Notches 1,500 Career Wins at Gulfstream Park Edwin Gonzalez notched career win No. 1,500 June 12 at Gulfstream Park, where the veteran is enjoying considerable success while competing in his first Spring/Summer Meet. The 29-year-old journeyman guided Surprise Factor to victory in race four on June 12 at Gulfstream to reach the career milestone, which includes 443 wins in his native Puerto Rico. “I’m very emotional. I cried Edwin Gonzalez SV Photography when I passed the wire,” Gonzalez said. “It’s something a lot of jockeys don’t do. I came to this country by myself and have been working all these years with my family to get opportunities with trainers and owners. It’s amazing. I’ll keep working hard.” Gonzalez, who ventured to the U.S. in 2013, had dominated at Penn National the past two years while winning at a 30% rate before venturing to Gulfstream Park, where agent Kevin Meyocks is booking his mounts. Gonzalez, who has settled in Miami Gardens with his wife, Karina, and their three children, is planning on riding year-round at Gulfstream. ■

Sent to the post as the 4-5 favorite, Shifty She raced on the lead with Bienville Street and tried to sprint clear at the top of the stretch but Sun Summers and Summering both tried to make a late run on the outside. Florida Focus Firenze Fire Wins Second Runhappy, Second True North Florida-bred Firenze Fire has now won at least one stakes race at Belmont Park in each of the last five years going back to the 2017 Champagne Stakes (Grade 1) as the Mr. Amore Stable homebred won the Grade 3 Runhappy Stakes for the second time on May 8 and his second Grade 3 True North (G2) on June 4 at the Big Sandy. Firenze Fire likewise counts among his Belmont Park conquests the 2017 Champagne Stakes (G1); the 2018 Dwyer (G3), which he won by nine lengths; and the 2020 Vosburgh (G2). His only losses at Belmont all came in Grade 1 tests when fifth in the Metropolitan Handicap won by Mitole; second to fellow Florida-bred Imperial Hint in the 2019 Alfred G. Vanderbilt and when fourth in the Runhappy Carter Handicap won by Vekoma. Trained by Kelly Breen and ridden for the 20th time by Irad Ortiz Jr., Firenze Fire was the 4-5 favorite in the field of five 4year-olds and older who went six furlongs in the $150,000 Runhappy Stakes, which was not graded in 2019 when Firenze Fire won the race the first time. The Runhappy Stakes was not run in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Firenze Fire broke from post four in his first start of the year while 7-5 second choice Chateau promptly went to the lead under Kendrick Carmouche. Chateau clicked off a quick first quartermile in :22.59 and the half in :45.51 as Firenze Fire stalked in second from about two-and-half lengths off the pace. Chateau turned for home a length in front but Firenze Fire wore down the leader with a stretch-length assault that culminated with a three-and-a-quarter-length victory ahead of a resilient Chateau in second. Town Classic was another three-quarters of a length back in third followed by Stan the Man and Florida-bred Drafted. The final time on the fast track was 1:09.76 and Firenze Fire paid $3.80 to win. 16

Firenze Fire again proved his fondness for the Belmont Park main track in the True North. While improving his record at The Big Sandy to seven wins, all in stakes, in 10 starts, Firenze Fire was the best of seven 4-year-olds and older who went six-and-a-half furlongs for a purse of $300,000. The 6-year-old Firenze Fire broke well from post one in the True North with substitute rider Jose Ortiz aboard. Ortiz picked-up the mount after his brother, Irad Ortiz Jr., was injured in a spill the day before at Belmont. Churchill Downs Stakes (G1)-winner Flagstaff shot to the lead from post two with American Freedom to his outside but Ortiz sent the versatile Firenze Fire after them from the start. With Firenze Fire on the rail, Flagstaff remained intent and those two were in a head-bobbing battle for lead as American Freedom was forced to chase from a length back in the three path. Firenze Fire and Flagstaff finished the first quarter-mile in an honest :22.71 and headed towards the bend while still a tandem before Firenze Fire exploded off the turn and soon had a half-length on Flagstaff as they continued their fight through a halfmile in :45.39. In the final sixteenth, Firenze Fire drew clear to win by a length-and-ahalf in 1:15.52 on the track listed as good. Flagstaff was second, two-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of American Power in third. They were followed in order by Wicked Trick, Phat Man, Looking at Bikinis and Big Engine. Ron Lombardi, who runs in the name of his Mr. Amore Stable, said he made the decision late last year to keep Firenze Fire on the track as opposed to sending the 6-yearold bay horse to a new career as a stallion. Lombardi said the final goal this year would be a fifth Breeders’ Cup appearance. Currently, Firenze Fire sits atop the list for the most Breeders’ Cup appearances by

a Florida-bred with four along with Precisionist and Pure Sensation. One more Breeders’ Cup Start would put him with Better Talk Now, California Flag, Kona Gold and Obviously as the only horses with a record five Breeders’ Cup starts. His best finish in a Breeders’ Cup Race came in 2020 when he was third in the Sprint (G1) behind winner Whitmore and fellow Florida-bred C Z Rocket in second. He also appeared in the 2017 Sentient Breeders Cup Juvenile (G1), 2018 Dirt Mile (G1), and the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Firenze Fire earned $165,000 for winning the True North and increased his career earnings to $2,484,350. He is now the 23rd all-time richest Florida-bred behind Gate Dancer ($2,501,705) while passing Holy Bull ($2,481,760). Undefeated in two starts this year, Firenze Fire now sports a record of 14 wins, four seconds and three thirds from 33 career starts. Breen said he continues to learn from the equine veteran. “He’s been training great,” Breen said. “I think he’s more even-keel now. I’m getting to know him even more than last year and maybe he’s getting to know me, also. It’s a pretty good combo right now.” Firenze Fire was the first career stakeswinner for his sire Poseidon’s Warrior and is out of the Langfuhr mare My Every Wish. She has also produced 2020 Franklin Square Stakes third-place finisher Firenze Freedom, a 4-year-old filly by Istan; a fullbrother to Firenze Fire in 2-year-old nonstarter Just Leo; and a yearling colt named Andiamo a Firenze by Speightstown. ■

Fury Kapcori Dies at Age 11 Journeyman Stud stallion Fury Kapcori passed away in June due to complications of colic. The 11-year-old son of Tiznow out of Gin Running, by Go for Gin was a multiple graded-stakes winner during his racing career and was the fifth-ranked third-crop sire standing in Florida with 2021 progeny earnings of

$230,005 and career progeny earnings of $833,570 through July 13. Fury Kapcori won the Grade 3 Precisionist Stakes in 2014 and the Santana Mile earlier that year, both at Santa Anita while trained and co-owned by Jerry Hollendorfer with Rick Awtrey and George Todaro. He also won Charlie Palmer Futurity at the Big Fresno Fair and finished his career with six wins, five

seconds and a third from 18 starts while earning $521,040. His top runners were Florida-bred The Goddess Lyssa, a three-and-a-quarter-length winner of the $50,000 Minaret Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in February; and Florida-bred High On Gin, who took the 2019 Happy Ticket Stakes at Louisiana Downs and the 2019 My Trusty Cat Stakes at Delta Downs. ■

Live Oak Sweeps Grade 3 Trillium Stakes Live Oak Plantation’s Florida homebred Souper Escape won the Grade 3 Trillium Stakes at Woodbine Racecourse on June 26 for the second consecutive year and Charlotte Weber’s nom de course also finished one-two with Crystal Glacier a nose behind her stablemate under the wire in second. The US$122,973 Trillium is for fillies and mares, 4-years-old and older who went a mile-and-onesixteenth on the Tapeta main track. Trained by Michael Trombetta and ridden by Luis Contreras, Souper Escape led from start to finish while setting quarter-mile fractions of :24.24 and :48.42 while a length in front of longshot Red Cabernet in a joint second with Skygaze while Crystal Glacier chased from another half-length back in fourth. Souper Escape extended her lead to two lengths turning for home with Merveilleux and Crystal Glacier together in second as Red Cabernet dropped back. Souper Escape continued with a clear lead inside the final furlong when Crystal Glacier made her late run on the outside. The two hit the finish together with the photo finish giving Souper Escape the narrow margin in 1:43.12. Crystal Glacier was a length-and-a-quarter faster than Skygaze in third followed by Merveilleux, Royal Wedding, Brassy and Red Cabernet completing the order of finish. Mark Casse trained the second, third and fourth-place finishers. “It was close, but I thought I had a pretty good chance to win the race,” Contreras said after getting the nod. “By the way my filly was acting in the post parade, I knew she was going to be sharp. So I knew she was going to be on the lead no matter what. I was just trying to make her relax to have some horse at the end.” Souper Escape paid $9.20 to win. It was the first start of the year for Souper Escape who was named the 2020 Canadian champion main track fe-

In her two races prior, she won the Grade 3 Seaway Stakes at Woodbine in August and her 2020 Trillium victory was just prior to that on July 18. The 2021 Trillium was the fourth stakes victory at Woodbine for Souper Escape who also won the 2019 La Lorgnette Stakes there. BY BROCK SHERIDAN Florida-bred Medina Spirit broke from post eight and in the span of a fast 2:01.02, became the seventh Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade 1)-winner bred in the Sunshine State and a record seventh winner of the Run for the Roses for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. In the May 1 Derby at Churchill Downs, Baffert passed trainer Ben “Plain Ben” Jones who saddled six Kentucky Derby winners between 1938-1952. Medina Spirit is also the second Florida-bred Derby winner for Baffert, who won his first blanket of roses with Florida-native Silver Charm in 1997. Medina Spirit broke on top from post eight and went right to the front under jockey John Velazquez, who guided the almost black colt through strategic quarter-mile fractions of :23.09, :46.70, with fellow Florida-bred Soup and Sandwich in pursuit in second and a lengthand-a-half ahead of Mandaloun in thrid. Helium was just to his outside in fourth and two lengths clear of Hot Rod Charlie and Essential Quality for most of the run down the backstretch.

a Spirit Becomes Seventh d Kentucky Derby Winner Medina Spirit’s lead began to shorten as Mandaloun turned up the heat to his right while Essential Quality began his assault while fivewide. Soup and Sandwich began to fall back while Hot Rod Charlie found a clear, ground-saving trip on the rail to make his move into contention. Coming out of the far turn after six furlongs in a pedestrian 1:11.21, Medina Spirit was joined by the undefeated race favorite Essential Quality on the far outside while Louisiana Derby-winner Hot Rod Charlie and Mandaloun joined the fray between horses and those four locked up for the final quarter-mile. Throughout the stretch, it appeared as Medina Spirit would surrender at any moment, but he continued with tenacity as Velazquez was hard at work in the saddle. The four raced as a tandem until Medina Spirit finally put them away inside the final 50 yards and won by a half-length ahead of Mandaloun in second with Hot Rod Charlie another half-length back in third. Essential Quality was another neck slower in fourth. Medina Spirit paid $26.20 to win with post time odds of 12-1. “I liked this little horse. I know he’s all heart,” Velazquez said. “Strategy was very simple—break out of there and try to put him in the lead. If somebody wanted to go faster, let him have it. I knew we were quick. And the more I looked at the race, the more I studied the race, I knew he was faster than the rest of the horses. I knew he was going to be a fighter. I rode him twice before, and he fought for second every step of the way.

“I think I got more tired than he did. He was fighting. He was fighting for every bit of everything I asked him to do. ”I was so proud of him, because we got to the sixteenth pole and he keep putting the ears down and keep fighting. I think I was more tired than him because I kept riding much harder than he was [running]. Baffert said he watched the stretch run in exhausting awe. “I think I was more tired than he was riding the last sixteenth of a mile,” Baffert said. “I couldn’t believe what was happening in front of my eyes. I thought he had a good chance, and then he was still there at the quarter pole. Well, he’s still there. Eighth pole, he’s still there. Sixteenth pole, he’s really, really still there. You could tell he was just laying it down. Johnny was riding hard and those other horses—he was just relentless. He was not going to let them—he came back. He didn’t seem like he was really that tired. “I hadn’t been that excited in a long time. I’m telling you, it was so exciting. I don’t know how you contain yourself in those last 50 yards.” After the Derby victory, Medina Spirit had won half of his six starts with three seconds and earnings of $2,175,200. He left the starting gate with odds of 12-1 and paid $26.20 to win, $12 to place and $7.60 to show. “This Derby is the only Derby I came here thinking, I just don’t know if we got the goods,” Baffert said after the race. “We know he’s solid, he’s good, and he’s tough. But everything’s going to have to go really well to get it done. “But when the gates come open, the whole scenario changes. And we had the horse. [Medina Spirit] showed me today, hey, Bob, I’m a lot better than you think I am. And he’s a hell of a lot better than I thought he was. And he’s a really good horse.” Medina Spirit was bred in Ocala, Fla., by Gail Rice, who sold him as a yearling at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales 2019 Winter Mixed Sale for $1,000 through the consignment of Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck’s Summerfield Sales located in Williston, Fla. He was purchased by Christy Whitman of Ocala, who later sold him at the 2020 OBS July Sale of Two Year Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age for $35,000 to current owner Amr Zedan’s Zedan Racing Stables after the colt had worked three furlongs in :33 flat at the under tack session. Medina Spirit is from the first crop of the sire Protonico out of Mongolian Changa, by the Florida-bred sire Brilliant Speed. a maiden special weight at Presque Isle Downs in 2016 with earnings of $25,970 and she was bred to Rivers Run Deep in 2020. Mongolian Changa currently resides at Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky where she was recently bred to Not This Time according to Rice, who no longer owns the mare. “When I bought [Mongolian Changa], I didn’t think she would produce marketable foals but I thought she would produce runners,” Rice said. “It hurt to get rid of [Medina Spirit and the mare] because I liked them both so much. But I had to pare down my horses. I’m just a small breeder. I lost money on him. I had to pay the stud fee. I had to pay the vet. I had to pay the commission. I did well at the sale because of others, but I thought because Medina Spirit was so good looking surely somebody would pay $10,000 for him.” Christy Whitman put in the only bid on Medina Spirit at the Winter Mixed Sale and she said she chose him on looks alone when she spotted him in the walking area in the back at OBS just before Medina Spirit entered the ring. “I was only person who bid on this horse,” Whitman said of the 2019 purchase. “When I buy horses I sit in the back room and see every horse that goes by and I pick them out. I just don’t have the kind of money to buy the big dollar horses. “This colt came up and he’s really good looking. Very well balanced, great hip on him, great top line on him and nobody was looking at him. Nobody—because of his white page. I didn’t even know who Protonico was so I had to look him up. I was actually trying to find something for one of my breeze riders, Jose Gallego, that was cheap. I opened him up at $1,000 and I was the only one to bid on him. “So I took him to the farm and [Gallego] took care of him and he was always a beautiful mover, really good, really professional. “Because of his purchase price and his light pedigree page, we couldn’t get him in any of the earlier 2-year-old sales at OBS,” Whitman continued. “So that’s how he wound up in the Open Sale and because of the pandemic, [the Open Sale] was even pushed back to July. But he worked a wonderful three-eighths [in :33 flat] and had a really good video and a $35,000 price on a $1,000 yearling is a pretty good turn around. We were happy and it was great that he went to Bob [Baffert], although I didn’t know he went to Baffert until after his first start at Los Alamitos.” Zedan spoke of how he acquired Medina Spirit at the OBS July Sale during a fluke series of events from Ocala to his home in Saudi Arabia. “Mr. Aboughazale, who is a dear friend… owns Protonico,” Zedan said. “We were done shopping per se during the [2020 OBS July Sale] and [Aboughazale calls me] and says there’s this horse by Protonico and would [I] want to check him out? So I checked him out and I liked him.” Zedan then called bloodstock agent Gary Young for his opinion and he suggested they consult Baffert. Baffert gave his okay and they decided to pursue the purchase.” 22

“I was back home [in Saudi Arabia]. So Gary called me and says, do you want us to go for this horse? I said, well, Bob said yes, you say yes, let’s do it,” Zedan continued. “I told Gary to call me in an hour when he goes in the ring. I miscalculated and I was going to go in the shower.” Young called back a few minutes later as Zedan was stepping in the shower and Medina Spirit was stepping into the auction ring. Luckily, Young was able to contact Zedan. As the bidding process continued, Zedan said to Young, “Yes let’s do this. And the rest is history. We just bought him and here we are.” Baffert then sent Medina Spirit to his training division at Los Alamitos and months later, Baffert’s Los Alamitos assistant Mike Marlow informed him that Medina Spirit may have some talent. “He worked really well at the sale—he worked really fast,” Baffert said. “And then he worked fast when we got him to Los Alamitos [and] started training him. My assistant at Los Alamitos really doesn’t pay attention to [how much money we spent] for him. So when he tells me he could be a good one, they tip you off.” Medina Spirit broke his maiden by three lengths in his first try at Los Alamitos on Dec. 11 and Baffert then placed him on his team of potential Kentucky Derby horses. In his next race, Medina Spirit faced Baffert’s then highly touted Derby horse, Life is Good, in the Grade 3 Sham on Jan. 2 at Santa Anita. Life is Good began to draw away from the field down the stretch, but Medina Spirit continued to courageously chase Life is Good and reduced the margin to two-and-three-quarter lengths at the finish, producing a 99 Beyer Speed Figure. In his next start, Medina Spirit won the Grade 3 Robert Lewis at Santa Anita on Jan. 30 in a gutsy performance in which he battled with Roman Centurian and Hot Rod Charlie for the entire length of the stretch, eventually winning by a neck. He then faced Life is Good again, but was a less enthusiastic second to that one who won by eight lengths. Life is Good suffered a minor injury during training in the following weeks which made Medina Spirit the favorite and lone Baffert starter in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 3. He finished second again in the Santa Anita Derby, this time four-and-a-half lengths behind Rock Your World.

Rombauer Upsets Preakness to Dash Triple Crown Hopes Chances for a Triple Crown title were vanquished for Medina Spirit in the Preakness (G1) as he finished third as the 5-2 favorite behind winner Rombauer and second place-finisher Midnight Storm. Jockey John Velazquez employed the same front-running strategy in the Preakness as Medina Spirit led through quarter-mile splits of :23.77, :47.93 and six furlongs in 1:07 on the fast track as Midnight Bourbon pressured in second. Around the far turn, Midnight Bourbon ranged up to the outside of Medina Spirit and those two raced in tandem until they turned for home when the former began to get the advantage. Meanwhile Rombauer and jockey Flavien Prat launched their assault from third and passed the two early leaders inside the final eighth-mile. Rombauer won by two-and-a-half lengths ahead of Midnight Bourbon with Medina Spirit another two lengths back in third. Rombauer paid $25.60 on a $2 win ticket.

He breaks the record held by Canonero II, who sold for $1,200 at the 1969 Keeneland September Yearling Sale… This was the third Kentucky Derby victory for jockey John Velazquez. Funky Cold Betamethasone Medina Spirit Gets Positive Test Following Derby Victory BY BROCK SHERIDAN Medina Spirit, the Florida-bred winner of the 2021 Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade 1) held at Churchill Downs on May 1, produced a post-race sample that resulted in a positive finding for the therapeutic steroid betamethasone, a Class C substance. Betamethasone is allowed in Kentucky as a therapeutic up until 14 days prior to a race. Any level of detection on race day, however, is a violation. The positive test was disclosed publicly by trainer Bob Baffert at a press conference held May 9 and a post-race split sample confirmed the findings in early June. According to reports, the first test produced a finding of 21 picograms of betamethasone while the split sample produced a finding of 25 picograms of betamethasone. At press time, records produced by The Jockey Club and accessed on the Equibase website, continue to recognize Medina Spirit as the winner of the Kentucky Derby although the purse money for the race has not been released by Churchill Downs, Inc., as the track continues to await a stewards’ hearing and ruling on the case. In Kentucky, two of the three track stewards are employed by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and the third is employed by the track. According to the rules of racing in Kentucky, Medina Spirit may be disqualified from his Kentucky Derby victory for the violation and Baffert may receive a fine and/or suspension. No such hearing had been scheduled at press time because the investigation on the matter had not been completed by the KHRC. According to several reports, Craig Robertson, an attorney representing Baffert and Medina Spirit owner Amr Zedan, said additional testing was being conducted in an effort to prove the source of the drug was an ointment to treat a skin condition on Medina Spirit’s hip in the weeks leading up to the Derby and that the drug was not administered through an injection to treat the horse for pain. The KHRC rules do not differentiate punishment based on how the drug was administered to the horse or for what ailment or pain the drug was intended to treat. ■

Ocala, FL—The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association announced in June an increase for breeder and stallion awards paid on Florida races, retroactive to Jan. 1, 2021. During its meeting on May 24, the FTBOA board of directors unanimously agreed to request permission from state regulators to bring back breeder awards on second and third place finishes at Florida tracks and to increase stallion awards. This permission was granted on May 28. Last year, on March 31, 2020, the state approved breeder and stallion awards at 10% of the purse, with the 10% breeder award limited to first place only. This action was deemed necessary in light of the negative economic impact anticipated from the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the expected loss of significant awards and purse revenues due to Calder’s termination of thoroughbred racing and the cessation of revenue-sharing from Calder’s slot machine operations. On May 24, 2021, however, upon recommendation from FTBOA management, the board took action to reinstate a 3% breeder award for second place and a 2% breeder award for third place, as well as to increase stallion awards to 15%, all of which would be subject to stated caps and would be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2021. Breeder awards for firstplace finishers will remain at the current 10% level. “I know I speak on behalf of our entire team, officers, and board when I say how thrilled we are to return our breeder and stallion awards to pre-pandemic levels for all of 2021,” FTBOA CEO Lonny Powell said. “Because of the pandemic and the Calder situation, our members and breeders have had to dig in, adjust, and sacrifice for the last couple of years while the FTBOA made every effort to keep our state-bred racing programs largely intact at the tracks during this difficult time in order to create and reward state-bred racing opportunities. “Thankfully, the tracks had very successful and lucrative offsite advanced deposit wagering and simulcast business, which was of great help from a revenue perspective and which highlight tremendous future opportunity and need for indepth discussion. “Enhancing and maintaining our awards will need to be the primary focus this year and next, particularly with some of the uncertainties ahead in 2022, which include the impact of the 30

new Seminole Gaming Compact with the state, the launch of online and in-person sports betting, and the result of the negotiations between the tracks and their horsemen on live racing dates,” Powell continued. “With a great sense of unity, purpose, and participation before this recent legislative session, The Stronach Group, FHBPA, and the FTBOA came to a meaningful agreement on how to best deal with the negative economic impact of the total loss of all revenues from Calder for horsemen’s purses and for our awards and Florida-bred purse supplements. This agreement centered on enhancing and modernizing our current wagering and economic models in light of the increasing market dominance of wagering via ADW. Those follow-on discussions are now taking place among the tracks, the horsemen, and the ADW’s, per industry protocol. The result of those discussions will be the key to mitigating most or all of the Calder impact and to the FTBOA’s capacity to maintain and/or build upon our current Gulfstream Florida-bred stakes and bonus programs in place today. We anxiously await positive progress on that front. Until the outcome of all these events becomes clearer, our priority at the FTBOA is to try to make these exciting breeder and stallion award increases not only work for 2021 but also to hopefully sustain them for 2022 as well. That remains a challenge.” FTBOA president Phil Matthews was pleased to make this announcement for the benefit of the industry and the FTBOA’s members. “As president of this Association, one of the things that puts a smile on your face is when you have the pleasure to announce an increase in breeder and stallion awards,” Matthews said. “It is even more meaningful when all of us have just navigated through a

year clouded by pandemic uncertainty, which comes on top of the loss of $1.1 million in annual awards revenue from Churchill-owned Calder, starting in January 2021, that would otherwise be devoted to breeder and stallion awards and Florida-bred purse supplements.” “In making this increase, which will be effective from Jan. 1, 2021, through the end of the year, we are hoping to get some well-timed financial relief in the pockets of our valued Florida breeders and owners

and help fuel our industry’s economic engine. I also must commend the FTBOA’s management, executive committee, and board for their stewardship and resolve in making some tough calls both at the outset of the pandemic and beyond in order to preserve the solvency and viability of our awards fund. Likewise, they did not hesitate to increase breeder and stallion awards just as soon as the circumstances made it possible to do so.”

2021 End of Special Legislative Session Report By FTBOA LOBBYIST MATT BRYAN I am pleased to report that the 2021 Regular and Special Sessions have concluded. On April 23, 2021, with one week left in the Regular Session, the Governor announced a deal with the Seminole Tribe of Florida on a new Compact. However, because there was not enough Matt Bryan time to address this issue and the related bills FTBOA Lobbyist moving through the process, the 2021 Regular BRYAN, SMITH, BRYAN AND MYERS Session ended without ratification of the new FILE PHOTO Compact or passage of any bills related to gaming. As a result, Senate President Wilton Simpson and Speaker Chris Sprowls agreed to convene a Special Session during the week of May 17, 2021, to deal exclusively with the Compact and gaming legislation. I am thrilled to report that during the Special Session, the Legislature recognized the positive economic impact of thoroughbred breeding, training and racing by requiring thoroughbred tracks to continue live racing. All other types of permits were decoupled, allowing them to essentially become miniature cardrooms and casinos. In addition, the Legislature eliminated all dormant pari-mutuel permits but allowed the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association’s notfor-profit Ocala Thoroughbred Racing permit which may be located somewhere in Marion County to continue to remain in place. While this non-profit thoroughbred track does not exist nor operate today, it could operate in the future if the thoroughbred tracks greatly reduce live racing and related funding sources being made available. For the first time in several years, the legislative committees and full House 34

and Senate debated issues related to the thoroughbred industry in detail. The fact that the industry has a $2.7 billion-dollar annual impact and produces more than 20,000 jobs with Florida continuing as a top three breeding jurisdiction in North America was discussed repeatedly over the three-day Special Session. One obvious reason for the FTBOA’s success during the Special Session was the involvement of the Marion County Legislative Delegation members. In particular, Reps., Harding and McClain were very helpful in advocating for our industry. On the Senate side, Sens., Baxley, Bradley and Perry were also very engaged and supportive. Senate President Wilton Simpson also stepped up in a big way on behalf of our agriculture-based breeding industry. Finally, House Speaker Chris Sprowls was supportive as well. The legislature passed four bills during the Special Session that ended on May 19th. These bills now await the signature of the Governor. Please find a brief description of each bill below. We have also provided a link to the enrolled version of each bill. • Allows mobile sports betting on a “spoke and hub” model • Allows the pari-mutuels with cardrooms to continue to operate designated player games Interestingly, the House Speaker and leadership negotiated with the Tribe, the Senate President, and the Governor to secure an amendment to the Compact that removed the possibility of mobile betting on casino games. That amendment was announced during the opening day of the Special Session and paved the way for passage of the Compact by wide margins in each legislative body. Senate Bill 4-A, relating to Gaming Enforcement. https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2021A/4A/BillText/er/PDF • Creates a new regulatory Gaming Commission. • Five members appointed by the Governor. • One member with a background in law enforcement, one lawyer, and one CPA, along with two at large appointments. • Replaces the Division of Pari-mutuel Wagering. The Legislature has long been wanting to step up the ability to regulate pari-mutuels and expanded non reservation gaming and wanted to try a new regulatory model as the new framework for gaming in Florida is established. It will be interesting to see how the approach to regulating this industry changes as the Commission engages. Senate Bill 6-A, relating to Public Records and Public Meetings. https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2021A/6A/BillText/er/PDF • Public records exemption for documents and meetings of the Commission Senate Bill 8-A, relating to Gaming. https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2021A/8A/BillText/er/PDF • Decouples all pari-mutuel permits except thoroughbred permits, requiring thoroughbred tracks to continue running live races in order to operate slot machines, inter-track wagering, and/or cardrooms. • Authorizes night racing for thoroughbreds, eliminating the current 7 p.m. curfew. • Eliminates all dormant pari-mutuel permits but allows for the continuation of not-for-profit OTR thoroughbred permit in Marion County. • Allows Ocala Breeder Sales to modernize its inter-track wagering program. The discussion around SB 8-A was contentious. I can assure that it was a tense three days! Thoroughbred permit-holders and their horsemen actually preferred to be decoupled like greyhound, harness, quarter horse racing, jai alai and Calder and be allowed to dramatically reduce or even eliminate live racing. They also requested a reduction of taxes along with purse and awards enhancements. As breeders, farms and owners of Florida-breds, we obviously have opposed for many years decoupling away the current and longtime requirement in law of con-

ducting live thoroughbred racing from a track who otherwise would have had a new and likely tempting option of offering casino gaming with no live racing or even payments to purses and awards. The FTBOA values our track partners and was and is supportive of their economic requests except for reducing live racing. We are very sympathetic to many of their economic and strong and regulatory needs and competitive issues and we continue to offer them our support and assistance in helping them next session pursue things that will ideally reward and incentivize them for rightly continuing their live thoroughbred racing schedules. The single issue that received the most debate during the Special Session was whether to allow the decoupling of the Isle Casino Pompano Park from live harness racing. The harness breeders had significant support to remain racing at the Isle and were successful in amending the bill in the House Gaming Committee to recouple them, but ultimately that issue failed on the floor and the Isle was granted permission to end live harness racing. We were deeply sympathetic to their unfortunate situation. While the FTBOA is pleased for reason obvious to our member breeders and owners with the results of the Special Session, we know that when you consider how displeased the tracks are with the new Tribal Compact and how little it helped them while benefiting some of their competition, there is more work to be done for us to assist our track partners in remaining competitive and successful. They have a reasonable and compelling story to tell and we will work to assist in in its telling. Those conversations are current and ongoing. We are hoping the discussions will lead to positive results for our two thoroughbred tracks and industry in the 2022 Session which opens in early January. FTBOA CEO Lonny Powell was with me in Tallahassee for every step of this process, making decisions or offering guidance on the fly as often needed while also continuing to be repeatedly front and center and our face at the microphones during numerous discussions by the Senate and House. Our general counsel Warren Husband was critical to our work as always. The FTBOA executive committee and board of directors were supportive of our efforts to protect live racing and leave the option for thoroughbred racing in Florida as a viable premise. All of us hope and pray that these legislative decisions will close the door on the long and draining for all issue of decoupling. We have already started planning strategy and legislation for the 2022 Session and I look forward to sending you another update on that in the nottoo-distant future. University of Florida Scientists Discover Genetic Markers Tied to Loss of the Ability to Sweat in Horses

Sweating is a critical tool to keep horses comfortable and healthy, but chronic idiopathic anhidrosis, a dangerous equine condition can impede their natural cooling mechanism and cause performance and health issues. For the first time, University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences researchers have identified genomic markers that cause the potentially fatal condition. The genomic mapping study gave researchers a discovery-based approach to attacking this disease, pushing aside prior assumptions about the disease’s causes. A team of UF scientists from the Genetics Institute and the College of Veterinary Medicine used genetic markers like signposts, looking for the common genomic markers found in horses that had chronic idiopathic anhidrosis disease. These genetic signposts pointed to a defective potassium transporter that likely hinders sweat function. “Now that we know which biological pathways cause the condition, we hope to design specific strategies to intervene,” UF/IFAS associate professor of equine physiology Samatha Brooks said. “We found that this disease has similarities to cystic fibrosis which has many drug treatments available and in development. Knowing this, we can start to consider ways to treat these horses that suffer from this condition, helping them sweat more normally over longer periods of time.” Genetic mutations leading to cystic fibrosis also impact ion channels and gave researchers some clues as to how this particular defective potassium transporter might work. Additional research is needed to fully understand, but researchers found a change in the protein that alters when this ion transporter turns on and off. The stress of the sweat gland attempting to function with this faulty transporter likely destroys the ability to sweat over time. “Using histology, the study of the structure of the tissues, previous work found that the sweat glands become damaged after horses live with chronic idiopathic anhidrosis over long periods of time,” Brooks said. “That is why we have not been successful in reversing the disease and restoring sweat function. Trying to sweat without a functional ion transporter could be the cause of the damage to the cells in the sweat gland. We may not be able to reverse that.” Having chronic idiopathic anhidrosis is like driving a car on a flat tire, Brooks explained. Over time, a horse living with this disease experiences impacts to their overall health beyond the inability to sweat. Living with the condition becomes a quality-of-life concern and unlike other kinds of anhidrosis, chronic idiopathic anhidrosis cannot be solved quickly or cured. “The saddest part about this disease is that we do not have any specific way to treat the condition right now,” Brooks said. “We can see what is happening and try to address the symptoms but because we do not know exactly what is causing it, we cannot attack the disease. So far, no supplements or medications have been tested and proven to work in a scientific study.” Most chronic idiopathic anhidrosis horses sweat normally when they are young, but their cells accumulate damage over time, especially in extreme environments like Florida. Older horses experience more severe clinical signs such as critical hyperthermia as they lose more sweat gland function over time.

Harry T. Mangurian Jr.’s involvement in the Florida Thoroughbred industry was a case study in success begetting success. The New York entrepreneur, who owned Drexel Investments and the National Basketball Association’s Boston Celtics (19791983), began racing horses in 1966. With his wife Dorothy (Dottie), he established Ocala-based Mockingbird Farm in 1972 with the purchase of its initial 350 acres. Shortly thereafter, Mangurian attended the dispersal of Mrs. Vanderbilt Adams’ bloodstock at Hialeah Park near Miami, making two key purchases that would be the impetus for his Thoroughbred business fortunes. Mangurian paid $40,000 for Florida-bred Desert Vixen, an unraced 2-year-old In Reality filly, and $92,000 for her dam Desert Trial, a 1963 Florida-bred mare by Moslem Chief, in foal to In Reality. Racing for Mangurian in his beige and blue silks, Desert Vixen would win six Grade 1 stakes races and two Eclipse Awards (1973 champion 3-year-old filly & 1974 champion handicap mare). Desert Vixen was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in 1979. (See “Desert Vixen’s Fairy Tale/The Florida Horse August 2020). The first foal born at Mockingbird Farm was Desert Trial’s 1972 In Reality colt, who was named Valid Appeal. Campaigned by Mangurian, Valid Appeal won the 1975 Dwyer Handicap (G3) at Belmont Park and earned $201,733. But more importantly, he became Mockingbird Farm’s foundation stallion and one of Florida’s all-time leading sires. Valid Appeal, who died in 2002, posted career progeny earnings of $49,195,213. He was also an influential broodmare sire and sire of sires. Valid Appeal sired 85 blacktype stakes winners, still the most at this writing recorded by any Florida sire who stood his entire career in the Sunshine State. While Valid Appeal was Mockingbird Farm’s first successful stallion, he would not be the last. For the next 30 years, the farm’s stud barn was home to a long list of leading Florida sires: End Sweep, Successful Appeal, Diablo, Rizzi, Crusader Sword, Valid Wager, Storm Creek, Valid Expectations and Open Forum. A GOLDEN HORSE

As his broodmare band grew, Mangurian’s formula was a simple one: breed his mares to his stallions and produce outstanding Florida-bred racehorses. But to keep enough out-cross bloodlines in his horses, Mangurian would send a select group of mares each year to Kentucky to be bred. One such mare was Gilded Lilly, a 1979 Mangurian homebred by What a Pleasure

out of Luquillo, by Princequillo, who banked but $50,235 as a racehorse. Gilded Lilly was barren in 1989 and was sent to Timeless Moment, who stood at Vinery near Midway, Ky. Once in foal, Gilded Lilly returned to Mockingbird Farm, where in 1990, she produced a Florida-bred Timeless Moment chestnut colt. He would be named Gilded Time. Rather than racing Gilded Time, Mangurian ventured into the 2-year-olds in training market. Consigned by Norman Casse’s Cardinal Hill Farm, Gilded Time sold for $80,000 at the 1992 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s February juvenile sale to Dennis H. Lynch, agent. Racing for David Milch, Jack Silverman and Mark Silverman, Gilded Time broke his maiden by four lengths at first asking on July 15, 1992, at Hollywood Park. Trained by Darrell Vienna, Gilded Time was quickly moved into graded stakes company and did not disappoint. On August 8, he sped to a half-length victory over Wild Zone in the Sapling Stakes (G2) at Monmouth Park. His sizzling 1:07.84 for the six furlongs set a track record. Stretched out to a mile for the Arlington-Washington Futurity (G2) on September 26 at Arlington Park, Gilded Time romped to the winner’s circle. He won by five and a half lengths over Boundlessly in 1:37.84 over a sloppy track. Next stop was the 1992 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) on October 31 at Gulfstream Park. Gilded Time would remain undefeated on the season, winning by three-quarters of a length over It’sali’lknownfact with River Special third. Final time for the 8.5 furlongs was 1:43.43. In but four starts, Gilded Time posted four wins to bank $855,980. Gilded Time collected the Eclipse Award as the 1992 champion 2-year-old colt and was also named a Florida-bred champion in the same division. Cup Sprint (G1) on November 6 at Santa Anita Park. He finished a game third to Cardmania. Gilded Time re-injured his foot in a sixth-place finish in the Malibu Stakes (G2) and was retired to stud with $975,980 in career earnings. TIME TO SUPERSIZE

In 1994, Mockingbird Farm grew from its then 600 acres to 1,100 acres with the purchase of 500 acres that had previously been part of Tartan Farms. The latter had Mockingbird Fa rm ceased operations in 1987 and those 500 acres abutted Mockingbird Farm. With the additional acreage, Mangurian’s broodmare band soon numbered 250-275 and was producing more than 100 foals a year. It was also around that time that Mangurian shifted from a strictly breedto-race operation to a more commercial one and began selling yearlings at auction. And in 1998, he began breeding and registering his foals under Mockingbird Farm instead of Harry. T. Mangurian Jr. But no matter the change in his business model, Mangurian continued to enjoy phenomenal success not only as a Florida breeder, but on a national level as well. A six-time Florida Breeder of the Year, Mangurian or his Mockingbird Farm was the leading North American breeder by earnings from 1999-2002. Mangurian topped the national breeders’ list in 1999 ($10,851,459) and 2000 ($10,757,845). But

Mangurian was now competing against himself as his runners bred under Mockingbird Farm began to hit the racetrack. In 2000, Mockingbird Farm ranked 14th with earnings of $2,929,644. By 2001, the Mockingbird Farm-bred horses out-earned the Mangurian-bred ones to top the national rankings with $9,550,610. But only two spots down in the third slot was Mangurian with $7,496,162. In 2002, Mockingbird Farm headed the national list again with $11,175,975 and Mangurian came in 11th with File Photo $4,042,650. From 1999-2001, Mangurian was the leading breeder by number of individual stakes winners in North America. He recorded 24 stakes winners in 1999 and 2001 with 26 in 2000. Mangurian bred at least 150 Florida-bred stakes winners, including Grade 1 stakes-winners Gilded Time, Exciting Story, Dark Ending, Nany’s Sweep, Stormy Pick, Trippi and Swept Overboard. He also bred Florida-bred millionaires Rocky Appeal ($1,942,217), Eishin Dansville ($1,354,303), Swept Overboard ($1,137,767) and Grass Venture ($1,095,683). Grade 1 Florida-bred stakes winner Exciting Story, a Mangurian homebred, garnered the 1999 Sovereign Award as the Canadian champion 2-year-old colt. By Diablo out of Appealing Story, by Valid Appeal, Exciting Story retired with a career bankroll of $911,270. Mangurian was named the National Breeder of the Year by the Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association in 1998 and 2000. And in 2001, he garnered the Eclipse Award of Merit for his lifetime achievements in the thoroughbred industry. Mangurian served on the board of directors of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association for more than 25 years. He was also a founder and the original chairman of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company. In June 1999, Mangurian announced the dispersal of all his bloodstock over the following two years at OBS auctions. The farm’s stallions, except for End Sweep who had already been sold to Australia-based Arrowfield Stud, would be sold privately. In late 2001, Toronto, Canada-based pharmaceutical executive Eugene Melnyk purchased Mockingbird Farm and renamed it Winding Oaks Farm. In 2017, Melnyk announced he was ending his participation in the thoroughbred industry and began selling parcels of the farm for commercial and residential development. In early 2020, Ocala-based horsewoman Becky Thomas reportedly purchased the Winding Oaks Farm training center for $6.25 million in the name of her Sequel Holdings Limited Partnership from Melnyk’s Cradle Holdings Inc. Mangurian died on October 19, 2008, at the age of 82 from leukemia. He was inducted into the Marion County Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2013. ■

Upcoming Deadlines and Events • The FTBOA Champions Gala Show will debut August 27 at 7 p.m. on the Horse Capital Television channel available from the FTBOA website homepage at www.ftboa.com. For those at Gulfstream Park (the eve of the second leg of the Florida Sire Stakes), there will be a limited showing at the track. • The Florida-bred foal registration deadline is August 31. Additional deadlines are available for registration, but the fee increases the later you wait. • The Florida Thoroughbred Charities golf tournament will be held October 8 at the Del Webb Stone Creek Golf, Inc. in Ocala. The day’s activities include a breakfast co-hosted with the Florida Thoroughbred Farm Managers’ with seminars on equine management topics. Farm managers and new FTBOA members will find it very beneficial. Mid-day activities include an original Florida thoroughbred art show by artist and FTBOA member Alaura Allen; an FTC charity silent auction; and a book signing by author Bill Heller who recently released a biography on the life of famed breeder/owner Fred Hooper. He will be joined by Wanda (Hooper) Quigley. The duo will be

in Ocala from Oct. 8 through 14 at book signings, talks and events to share industry history during the Fred Hooper era in Ocala. The day also includes a luncheon co-hosted by the Florida Thoro-bred Fillies featuring Kentucky Derby winning breeder Gail Rice as the keynote speaker. Golfing kicks off with a shotgun start for the scramble tournament after lunch. Activities abound on course and a reception, dinner and dancing will cap off the day. By doing so, you miss out on vital member communications from March through August including The Florida Horse magazine and the annual Farm and Service Directory. Make a note on your calendar to renew each January, so you will get your full benefits package. ■

Florida Sire Stakes Payment Schedule It is the responsibility of horse owners to inform themselves of pertinent deadlines. FTBOA sends courtesy reminders but encourages industry members to save the dates.

Yearlings - May 15 - $250 (or November 15 - $500 or January 15 - $5,000)

2-Year-Olds - January 15 - $250 * (or February 28 - $500)* * Previous yearling payment must have been made

Stallions - February 15 - $2,000 (or August 1 - $3,000 or November 15 - $10,000)
