By the Numbers T
he Florida thoroughbred breeding and industry added to their prominent status among states and provinces at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships with Golden Pal becoming the first Florida-bred to win two Breeders’ Cup races when he took the $1 million Turf Sprint (Grade 1) on Nov. 6 for trainer Wesley Ward, owners Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, Derrick Smith and Westerberg and breeder Randall E. Lowe of Las Vegas, Nev. (See full story on page 20). Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., the 3-year-old colt launched from his post three and put daylight on the field of 12 almost immediately en route to a length-and-a-quarter victory in a time of :55.25, which is less than a half-second off the course record of :54.75 set by Fast Parade 15 years ago at Del Mar. The day before, Pappacap, a homebred for George and Karen Russell’s Rustlewood Farm Inc. located in Reddick, Fla., finished second to Corniche in the $2 million TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1) and placed himself atop the standings on the Road to the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), which will be run May 7 at Churchill Downs. Trained by Mark Casse and ridden by Joe Bravo, Pappacap now has earnings of $576,000. Later on the Nov. 6 program at the seaside track, Medina Spirit ran second to Knicks Go in the $6 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) and pushed himself into the top 10 all-time Florida-bred money earners with $3,545,200 for owner Amr Zedan’s Zedan Racing Stables Inc. and Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. Bred in Florida by Gail Rice, Medina Spirit also turned the spotlight on himself as a candidate to become the 2021 champion 3year-old as the winner of the Kentucky Derby, the Awesome Again (G1) against older horses, Robert B. Lewis (G3) and Shared Belief earlier in the year. Mr. Amore Stable homebred Firenze Fire also placed 6

himself in the Breeders’ Cup record books when he started in the $2 million Qatar Racing Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) giving the Florida-bred star five Breeders’ Cup appearances, a distinction held only by Channel Maker, Better Talk Now, California Flag, Kona Gold, Obviously (Ire) and Perfect Drift. Extravagant Kid (Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint) and C Z Rocket (Breeders’ Cup Sprint) also made their second starts in the Breeders’ Cup to help push the number of Florida-bred starters in the rich events to 380, more than any other state, province or country other than Kentucky. Golden Pal, Extravagant Kid Produce Florida-bred Exacta in Keeneland’s Woodford Any thoughts that Florida-breds Golden Pal and Extravagant Kid would run back to the off-form performances both produced in their most recent starts in Europe were dispelled Oct. 9 at Keeneland as

they ran first and second respectively in the Grade 2 Woodford Stakes presented by TVG. The $200,000 Woodford featured a field of seven 3-year-olds and older going five-and-a-half furlongs on the turf. Golden Pal came into the Woodford off of a seventh-place finish in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York on Aug. 20 when four-and-three-quarter lengths behind winner Winter Power; and Extravagant Kid was making his first start since finishing 14th in the Group 1 Darley July Cup won by Starman at Newmarket on July 10. As expected, Golden Pal broke on top from post two with John Velazquez aboard and the 3-year-old colt went right to the lead followed by Jim McKay Turf Sprint-winner Firecrow to his outside. Golden Pal cruised through the first quarter-mile in a quick :21.51 before Firecrow began to cut into his lead around the turn as 34-1 longshot Johnny Unleashed began to edge closer with an inside trip. At the top of the stretch, Firecrow took a short lead on Golden Pal as Johnny Unleashed, although checked briefly on the turn, also looked as he might threaten on the rail. Extravagant Kid was behind those three and looking for running room in fourth. Firecrow continued to have a short lead past the three-sixteenths pole as Golden Pal appeared spent from a fast half-mile in :44.53. Suddenly Golden Pal spurted clear from between horses approaching the eighth-pole and began to draw clear as jockey Jose Ortiz shifted 8

Extravagant Kid to the outside for clear running. Golden Pal continued to extend his lead to two-and-a-quarter lengths under the wire in 1:03.12 on the good turf while Extravagant Kid rallied to get second. County Final was a half-length farther back in third followed by Johnny Unleashed, Inhalation (GB), Firecrow and Charcoal. “He was very game,” Velazquez said of Golden Pal. “I never rode him so I asked [Wesley Ward exercise rider and jockey] Julio [Garcia]. He said, ‘Just put your hands down and he’ll run for you; even if he gets passed he’ll run for you.’ I left him alone and when [Firecrow] came to him and put the head in front, I was like, ‘Hey, we got to come back and run.’ I got after him, and he gradually got away from the other horse. It took me two or three jumps to engage him back into the race, and after that he was pretty good.” Golden Pal was the 1-2 favorite and paid $3 to win. “We are delighted. We can never be disappointed with this horse,” Extravagant Kid trainer Brendan Walsh said. “He ran great again. The winner is a very, very good horse. Extravagant Kid is a model of consistency.” It was the second win of 2021 for Golden Pal, who took the Grade 3 Quick Call at Saratoga by three lengths before traveling to Europe for the Nunthorpe. It was also his second victory at Keeneland after winning the $920,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2) there last year in November. He also won the $85,000 Skidmore at Saratoga in August of last year just prior to his victory in the Breeders’ Cup. Golden Pal improved his record to four wins in seven starts with two seconds and the $120,000 first prize in the Woodford increased his career bankroll to $779,056. Golden Pal is trained by Wesley Ward for Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, Derrick Smith and Westerberg. He is by Uncle Mo and is the first foal out of the graded stakes-winner Lady Shipman, by Midshipman and was bred in Florida by Randall E. Lowe.

Bellavia to Stand at Pleasant Acres Stallions Pleasant Acres Stallions is pleased to announce the arrival of Bellavia, who will stand in Florida for the 2022 breeding season for a $2,500 fee. Bellavia is a son of Honor Code out of Glacken’s Gal, by Smoke Glacken. Glacken’s Gal broke her maiden in her first attempt and two months later won the $100,000 Astoria Stakes at Belmont Park. She has also produced Live Lively who, after earning $280,300 racing, foaled Indian Miss—the dam of millionaire and champion male sprinter and multiple Grade 1-winner Mitole and upcoming Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1)-contender, millionaire and Grade 1-winner Hot Rod Charlie. Bellavia’s second dam, Lady Diplomat, by Silver Deputy, produced nearly $1 million in progeny earnings with nine winners from 12 starters, including three black type winners. His third dam, Mercedes Miss, by Carr de Naskra, produced stakes-winner Missme and multiple black type-placed winners. His fourth dam, Kermis, by Graustark, produced 11 winners from 13 starters and more than $1.2 million in progeny earnings—including two black type winners and one black type placers. “At Pleasant Acres Stallions, we are always searching for the most impressive sire lines to bring to our Florida breeders,” Pleasant Acres owner Joe Barbazon said. “Bellavia is by champion dual Grade 1-winning Honor Code and is not only the first Honor Code to stand in Florida, he is the second Honor Code to date to stand anywhere. His commanding presence and impressive build is just like his sire and his grandsire A.P. Indy.”
Out of the Royal Academy champion-producing mare Vassar, Leinster is half-brother to two-time Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1)-winner Stormy Liberal, the champion turf male of 2018. In 2019, Leinster handily beat Stormy Liberal in the six-furlong $700,000 Runhappy Turf Sprint (G3) at Kentucky Downs. Leinster is a four-time graded stakes winner, including the 2020 Troy Stakes (G3) in Saratoga where he beat multiple graded stakes winner and world record holder Disco Partner, as well as multiple graded stakes winning Florida-bred Pure Sensation. Leinster set his first track record in the Troy when he covered five-and-a-half furlongs on the Mellon Turf in a time of 1:00.23, breaking the old track record of 1:00.46 set by Lady Shipman in 2015. The Rusty Arnold trainee went on to set a Keeneland course record by racing five-and-a-half furlongs in 1:00.86 in the $150,000 Shakertown Stakes (G2), where he beat the multiple graded and Group 1 winning millionaire, Florida-bred Extravagant Kid. Leinster topped off his impressive career by winning the $150,000 Woodford Stakes (G2) at Keeneland after running second in the same race the previous year. He went on to finish third in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) where he beat the sensational multiple Grade 1-winner Got Stormy. In his final campaign, Leinster finished his career in style by winning the $100,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint Stakes (G3) this past February. “Track record holder at Saratoga and Keeneland. You don’t get any faster than that and a beautiful individual to go with it,” trainer George “Rusty” Arnold said. Bellavia and Leinster join stallions Amira’s Prince, Breaking Lucky, Bucchero, Curlin’s Honor, Gunnevera, Handsome Mike, Long On Value, Neolithic, No Never No More, Ride On Curlin, and Sweetontheladies at Pleasant Acres Stallions. Continued on next page
Leinster Also Joins Pleasant Acres Roster Four-Time Graded Stakes Winner Leinster, a son of Majestic Warrior out of the Royal Academy mare Vassar, has arrived at Pleasant Acres Stallions and will stand for the 2022 breeding season for a $5,000 fee. After earning $764,971 with a record of six wins, six seconds and five thirds from 24 starts, Leinster raced under Amy Dunne, Brenda Miley, Jean Wilkinson, and Westrock Stable. “Leinster is an exceptional addition to the stallion barn at Pleasant Acres Stallions,” Joe Barbazon said. “A world class turf sprinter, he brings with him two blazing fast track records in graded events and four triple digit Beyers.”

Florida Focus Gonzalez Guides Shifty She to Gate to Wire Win in Noble Damsel Chris Pallas, who co-bred and co-owns Florida-bred Shifty She, was not happy with his jockey when the 5-year-old mare finished fourth in the Grade 3 Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf won by Princess Grace on Sept. 11. So when trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. entered Shifty She for the $200,000 Noble Damsel (Grade 3) at Belmont Park Oct. 23, Pallas, who lives in Fort Lauderdale, decided to fly Gulfstream-based jockey Edwin Gonzalez to New York to ride. The strategy proved a success as Gonzalez guided her to a front-running victory over one mile on the Belmont turf against seven other fillies and mares. Shifty She and Gonzalez burst from post four in the Noble Damsel and quickly established a lead they would never relinquish. For most of the run down the long backstretch, Shifty She had a length advantage on 2-1 favorite Tamahere (Fr) to her outside as they finished the first quarter-mile in :23.33. Tamahere would try to close the gap several times through a half-mile in :46.20, but Shifty She repeatedly repelled her Continued on page 12

challenger while continuing to show the way around the far turn. Shifty She turned into the stretch more than a length in front and was never threatened thereafter as she widened her winning margin to a length-and-a-half ahead of High Opinion in second in a time of 1:33.34 on the firm turf. “She’s a very nice filly and she was comfortable up front. She was nice and relaxed and I waited until the last eighth of a mile to run,” Gonzalez said. Interviewed on the Fox Sports telecast of America’s Day at the Races following a gate-to-wire victory by Shifty She in the Noble Damsel, Pallas said Gonzalez, who earned his first win at a NYRA track, was one of the keys to the graded stakes victory. “I was very disappointed in the ride at Kentucky Downs so I decided to fly my own jockey up this time and there you go,” Pallas told Maggie Wolfendale on the national telecast. “That [race at Kentucky Downs] actually legged her up for this race. The hills, the wide turn, a lot of horses coming out of Kentucky Downs are winning now. “You don’t do anything in this business without a team,” Pallas said. “My team in Ocala, [Ryan and Rebecca] Barbazon, Art Fisher— we had to lay her up for a year. We waited and were very patient with her… and it’s proved to be the right thing. Just look at the time, she finished in 1:33 and change. That’s racehorse time. “In this game, you’ve got to be very patient. The little guys like us, sometimes we can play in the big leagues.” Flower Point was another half-length back in third with In a Hurry fourth. Love and Thunder (Ire), Tamahere, Risky Mischief and Marlborough Road (Ire) completed the order of finish. It was the third stakes victory of the year for Shifty She, who won the $75,000 Powder Break going a mile on the grass at Gulfstream Park on May 15 against open fillies and mares before defeating fellow Florida-bred females in the $75,000 Ginger Punch at a mile-andone-sixteenth on the Gulfstream Park turf on June 12. She was then third in the Fasig-Tipton De La Rose won by Regal Glory going a mile on the turf at Saratoga on Aug. 8 before finishing fourth at Kentucky Downs. Shifty She is by Gone Astray out of the unraced Strong Hope mare Perilous Hope and she was bred by Pallas in partnership with brotherin-law George Klein of Gilbert, Ariz. Pallas now co-owns Shifty She with Harvey E. Rothenberg. Shifty She is the third foal produced by Perilous Hope, who also is the dam of winner Silver Sniper, by Value Plus; and unraced Fivejayz, a 5-year-old by Csaba who is currently a broodmare owned by Pallas. Shifty She has now won six of 10 starts with a third while earning $317,395. She was let go at 6-1 in the Noble Damsel and returned $15.20 to win. Pallas said Shifty She will now be pointed to the $500,000 Pegasus Filly and Mare Turf (G3) at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 29. 12

Peter D Gives Blanco First Career Stakes Victory Journeyman Stud Juvenile Peter D rallied three wide on the turn and overtook front-running Mr. Rum Runner at the top of the stretch to win the $60,000 Journeyman Stud Juvenile Stakes at Gulfstream Park Oct. 23 and give owner-trainer Andry G. Blanco the first stakes victory of his brief career as a conditioner. The Journeyman Stud Juvenile presented a field of eight 2-year-old Florida-breds who went about a mile-and70-yards on the new Tapeta course. “A friend of mine offered him to me. The horse breezed pretty well over the Tapeta at [Ocala Breeders’ Sales]. He showed me the horse and I liked him and put an offer in and bought him,” Blanco said. Peter D broke from post two with jockey Leonel Reyes as Mr. Rum Runner went for the lead right from the start from post four. Globes also showed early speed from post seven but was fanned four-wide on the clubhouse turn as Peter D saved ground on the rail in third. Mr. Rum Runner showed the way down the backstretch after a quarter-mile in :24.97 as Globes was just to his outside in second with Peter D still tucked on rail behind those two. The Skipper Too and 2-1 favorite C My Meister were racing to the outside of Peter D as those three chased in joint third. Mr. Rum Runner finished the half-mile in :50.67 as Globes raced up to challenge him as they went around the far turn noses apart. Peter D and took aim at the two leaders to become a threat as they finished six furlongs in 1:40.69. Mr. Rum Runner led briefly after they turned for home before Peter D made his move on the outside to win by a length-and-a-half in 1:44.67, setting a track record on the relatively new course that opened on Sept. 30. Mr. Rum Runner held on for second and finished two-and-a-half lengths better than C My Meister in third. They were followed in order by Globes, Hey Porter, The Skipper Too, October Time and Chaotic Tempo. Peter D paid $11 to win. It was only the third career start for Peter D, who broke his maiden in his first career start, dominating a five-and-a-half furlong, $25,000 maiden claiming to win by eight-and-a-half lengths at Delaware Park on Aug. 26. Blanco then sent the son of He’s Had Enough into stakes company on the turf in the $75,000 Hollywood Beach going five furlongs at Gulfstream on Sept. 25, but the grey or roan gelding finished fifth behind winner Last Leaf. Peter D is Blanco’s fourth winner from the 40 starters he has saddled since launching his training career last year. The 40-year-old Blanco arrived in the U.S. from Venezuela in 2003. He rode 49 winners from 381 mounts during a career that included a seven-year break between 2005 and 2013. He currently has a stable of four. “I’ve been breaking babies at OBS and I’ve been pinhooking. I’m still doing it,” Blanco said. “I gallop. I break my horses. I do everything with the horses.” Peter D was bred in Florida by Pamela Edel and is out of Super Trooper, by Posse. He now has career earnings of $51,444 in three starts.
She’s So Beautiful Wins Khozan Juvenile Fillies She’s So Beautiful went into the Khozan Juvenile Fillies at Gulfstream Park on Oct. 23 with the most wins among seven 2-year-old fillies bred in Florida and added to her tally with a neck victory ahead of Sea Art in second for her third career win. The $60,000 Khozan was run at seven furlongs on the main track. 14

Divine Connection broke best of all from post six but Emisael Jaramillo quickly had Sea Art on the lead from post one with She’s So Beautiful and jockey Samy Camacho also getting a good start from the outside post seven. Sea Art, the 9-5 favorite, set the pace on the rail with Divine Connection a half-length back to her outside with She’s So Beautiful racing a length off of those two in third as they raced down the backstretch. Sea Art completed the first quarter-mile in a controlled :23.41 as Divine Connection kept up the pressure on the outside while She’s So Beautiful kept in range three-wide around the turn. Sea Art and Divine Connection finished the half-mile in :46.82 while finishing the bend together with She’s So Beautiful finding her best stride on the far outside. Sea Art held the lead until the final furlong when She’s So Beautiful took over and held on for the win in a time of 1:25.28 on the fast track. Sea Art was second, a neck ahead of a late-running Demurely in third with Queen Camilla making a late run from last to get fourth. Divine Connection, Violent Zap and Harper Be Good completed the order of finish. She’s So Beautiful was let go at 51 odds and rewarded her backers with a $12.20 win payoff. Trained by Carlos David, She’s So Beautiful was third to next-out winner and future Catch a Glimpse Stakeswinner Diabolic in her debut against special weight maidens going five furlongs on the turf at Gulfstream on May 20 before winning at the $50,000 maiden claiming level going the same distance but on the main track at Gulfstream on June 27. She then won a non-winners of two, $75,000 optional claiming allowance by three-and-aquarter lengths going six furlongs on Aug. 8 at Gulfstream before finishing second in a second condition, $75,000 optional claiming allowance over a sloppy six furlongs at Gulfstream on Sept. 4. She’s So Beautiful is a Florida homebred for Palm Beach Racing by Air Force Blue out of Beautiful One, by Medaglia d’Oro. She now has three wins in five starts with a second and a Florida-bred She’s So Beautiful Ryan Thompson Photo third and earnings of $121,356. ■

Make It Big Caps Big Day for Saffie Joseph Jr, Edgard Zayas Red Oak Stable’s Make It Big overcame a slow start and traffic to capture the $60,000 Ocala Stud Juvenile Sprint on Oct. 30, capping a four-win day for both trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. and jockey Edgard Zayas at Gulfstream Park. In addition, Make It Big, the 4-5 favorite in the seven-furlong sprint for Florida-bred 2-year-olds, was Joseph’s 12th winner from his last 21 starters, including two winners at Belmont Park and one at Keeneland. Prior to scoring with Make It Big, Joseph and Zayas teamed for victories with Sister Lou Ann in race three, Jeha ($9.80) in race four and Fate of Ophelia ($17.40) in race seven. “Edgard rides a lot for us, and he rides a good race,” Joseph said. “He’s a big part of the team.” Make It Big, who was coming off an eight-and-a-half length frontrunning debut victory at Gulfstream three weeks ago, broke a step slowly from his rail post position before assuming a stalking position along the rail behind pacesetter Just Leo, a full brother to multiple graded-stakes winner Firenze Fire, along the backstretch and into the far turn. Just Leo, who set half-mile fractions of :23.08 and :46.31 seconds, tired on the turn into the homestretch as Lightening Larry made a three-wide sweep to the lead entering the stretch with Make It Big still trapped behind horses. Lightening Larry kicked in through the stretch under Romero Maragh but was unable to hold off Make It Big, who launched an outside rally after Zayas finally found running room at the top of the stretch. “Last time he broke on the lead, and I didn’t expect him to be on the lead. Today was much different,” Joseph said. “He broke; he was behind; he had a tough trip; and he was able to overcome it. I think he’s a horse that’s going to progress. As the distances get longer, I think he’s going to get better.” Make It Big, a son of Neolithic, ran seven furlongs in 1:25. Lightening Larry held second, two-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Clapton.
Lemieux Runs Away from Field in Brethren Juvenile Fillies D J Stable’s Lemieux, a 2-year-old daughter of 2016 Florida Derby (G1) and Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Nyquist, broke alertly from the gate, turned back some early pressure and opened up through the stretch to earn her first stakes victory the $60,000 Brethren Juvenile Fillies on Oct. 30 at Gulfstream Park. Ridden by Edwin Gonzalez for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse, even-money favorite Lemieux ($4.20) ran one mile and 70 yards in

1:43.16 over the Tapeta. It was Gonzalez’s ninth win over Gulfstream’s newly installed all-weather surface, five of them coming for Casse. Bred in Florida and sold for $100,000 as a yearling last fall at Keeneland, Lemieux was making her fifth career start and first since finishing off the board in the mile-and-one-sixteenth Pocahontas (G3) Sept. 18 at Churchill Downs. She had run first or second in her prior three runs, including a four-length maiden special weight triumph Aug. 18 at Saratoga. Lemieux established command right from the gate and coasted through a quarter-mile in :24.06 seconds, chased by Brittiz and jockey Edgard Zayas. Brittiz turned up the pressure on the turn, drawing alongside the leader following a half in :48.28, but began to drop back as Lemieux approached the stretch in front and steadily drew clear to win by six-and-a-half lengths. Casse-trained stablemate Fish Mooney made a late run to get second over Brittiz, followed by Runaway Breeze, Yes I’m Spiteful, Straight to Go and Science Fiction.
Shamrocket Gets First Stakes Victory in Point of Entry Donegal Racing’s Shamrocket became the second Florida-bred stakes winner at Belmont Park in two days as the 4-year-old gelding won the $97,000 Point of Entry Stakes by a half-length for trainer Todd Pletcher on Oct. 24. Florida-bred Shifty She won the Grade 3 Noble Damsel a day earlier. The Point of Entry featured a field of five 3-year-olds and older who went a mile-and-one-half on the turf. It was the first career stakes victory for the marathon grass specialist Shamrocket, who had been close in several long distance added money events this year, including finishing just a length-and-a-quarContinued on next page THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2021

ter short of winner Channel Cat when fourth in the Grade 1 Man o’ War at a mile-and-three-eighths on the turf at Belmont Park in May. This summer, Shamrocket was third in both the $150,000 Grand Couturier won by Gufo over a mile-and-a-half on turf at Belmont on July 5 and in the Grade 2 Bowling Green won by Cross Border after a mile-and-three-eighths on grass on July 31 at Saratoga. He then finished fourth behind winner Serve the King (GB) in the $120,000 John’s Call at a mile-and-five-eighths at Saratoga on Aug. 25 before finishing third to Price Talk in a second condition, $80,000 optional claiming allowance at a mile-and-one-eighth on turf at Belmont on Sept. 25. But Shamrocket put it all together in the Point of Entry with jockey Javier Castellano aboard. Shamrocket broke well from post two before Castellano let him find a comfortable running position in fourth, about seven lengths off of 7-5 favorite Tide of the Sea and 5-2 third choice Beacon Hill as they headed for the clubhouse turn with longshot Mo Gotcha just off of them in third. Tide of the Sea set an agile quarter-mile fraction of :23.62 on the firm turf with Beacon Hill applying pressure from his outside flank. The front pair then slowed the pace with a :48.30 halfmile and six furlongs in 1:13.71 as they continued down the backstretch, still seven lengths ahead of Shamrocket in fourth. As they approached the far turn, the field became more compact as Shamrocket passed longshot Mo Gotcha to take third and get within three lengths of the front-running pair of Tide of the Sea and Beacon Hill, who finished the mile together in 1:38.44. Beacon Hill took a short lead coming out of the turn with Tide of the Sea to his inside as Shamrocket and Bluegrass Parkway joined them to make it four across the track at the top of the stretch. 16
THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2021
As they passed the final furlong marker, Shamrocket and Beacon Hill drew clear and were heads apart until the final strides when Shamrocket took command to win in a final time of 2:26.70. Beacon Hill was second, three-and-three-quarters lengths ahead of Bluegrass Parkway in third. Tide of the Sea and Mo Gotcha completed the order of finish. Shamrocket went off as the 9-5 second choice and paid $5.60 to win. “He never gets tired. He keeps running and finished really well,” Castellano said. “He hooked up with two good horses at the top of the stretch and kept carrying himself. I didn’t think I would run out of horse.” Pletcher commented that Shamrocket produces a solid effort in every race. “By looking at his PPs, you can tell he’s a super-consistent horse,” Pletcher said. “He just hasn’t had as many wins as second and thirds, but he always shows up and runs hard every time. He benefitted from a good trip today with an honest pace to run at and everything fell into place, so I’m happy for him.” Pletcher said Shamrocket will now target the 11-furlong $200,000 Red Smith (G2) on Nov. 20 at Aqueduct. By Tonalist out of Zehoorr, by Storm Cat, Shamrocket was bred in Florida by George and Karen Russell’s Rustlewood Farm Inc. He has now won four of 20 career starts with six seconds and seven thirds while earning $411,660. Shamrocket was a $130,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase for Donegal from the consignment of Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck.
Sweet Dani Girl Wins Myrtlewood J & J Stables and Nicholas Vaccarezza’s Florida-bred Sweet Dani Girl made a bold three-wide rally to win the $150,000 Myrtlewood Oct. 29 at Keeneland. Named for the Hall of Famer and influential broodmare who won three races during Keeneland’s nine-day opening meet in October 1936, in the race before the Rubicon Valley View, the Myrtlewood is for 2-year-old fillies going six furlongs. Trained by Vaccarezza’s father, Carlo Vaccarezza, and ridden by Martin Garcia, Sweet Dani Girl covered the distance in 1:10.36 over the track rated fast. “The position when everyone was going together, I couldn’t drop in a little, so I was playing how [the race] was coming,” Garcia said. “She’s a good filly. She was just doing whatever I asked. I think she showed a lot first time out; she beat some good horses. And then today the same thing. She’s a really good filly. I was just making sure I didn’t get in trouble, like behind horses and stuff like that, and then she just did the rest.”

Kant Believe It and Verylittlecents dueled on the lead throughout much of the Myrtlewood through a quarter-mile fraction of :22.16 and half-mile time of :46.14. Garcia and Sweet Dani Girl tracked just to the outside of the pacesetting duo and was able to surge to the lead in the final strides for a three-quarter-length victory. Sweet Dani Girl, the 2-1 favorite, paid $6. Kant Believe It held second while Verylittlecents finished third. Chi Town Lady finished fourth and was followed by Jester Calls Nojoy, Jumeirah, Towser, Majestic d’Oro, She’s Pure Silver and You Look Cold. Blazing Summer was scratched. With Sweet Dani Girl’s victory in the Myrtlewood, she earned $90,000 and remained perfect in two career starts after breaking her maiden at Churchill Downs in her first start against special weight maidens going six furlongs. The daughter of Ocala Stud stallion Jess’s Dream out of the Scat Daddy mare My Sweet Dani Girl was bred in Florida by her owners.
Mott said plans are to bring her back as a 3-year-old but definite plans have not been made. “She can come back in the Demoiselle [G2, Dec. 4 at Aqueduct going a mile-and-one-eighth] so I’m not sure what I’m going to do. That race is coming up, so I’d have to get serious about her training soon if we go there. But we have talked about a number of things for her.” Outfoxed is from the first crop of Bridlewood Farm stallion Valiant Minister and out of Saving Time, by Kantharos. She was bred in Florida by Baoma Corp and races in the colors of Larry, Nanci and Jaime Roth’s LNJ Foxwoods for whom she has won two of three starts with a third and earning $372,000. Outfoxed has passed through the OBS Auction ring twice including in the 2021 April Sale where Solis/Litt paid $360,000 to acquire her out of the Coast Equine consignment. She was also a $27,000 yearling at the 2020 October Sale where Jesse Hoppel purchased her from the Abbie Road consignment. When asked if he has plans to return to the Florida Sire Stakes in the future Mott said simply, “If I have any that can run like she can, I’ll be back.” ■
Outfoxed Galloping at Payson Park Florida-bred Outfoxed, winner of the $200,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Susan’s Girl and $400,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes My Dear Girl at Gulfstream Park, is resuming light training at Payson Park training center in Florida. “She’s back with us at Payson Park and she’s just galloping,” Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott said. “She’s not been breezing yet. She got banged on in the [My Dear Girl] a little bit. I don’t know what happened, nothing serious. She had some stitches so she didn’t do much for a couple of weeks.” With or without the minor cuts, Mott said Outfoxed deserves some time off after the two big summer victories. “But she had a pretty good little run there. So she can have a little bit of a break.”

Gets Second Breeders’ Cup Victory With Turf Sprint Domination BY BROCK SHERIDAN DEL MAR, CA – Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, Derrick Smith and Westerberg’s Golden Pal became the first Florida-bred to win two Breeders’ Cup races while also becoming the 177th Floridabred millionaire after winning the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (Grade 1) for 3-year-olds and older at five furlongs on the turf at Del Mar Nov. 6. Golden Pal, winner of last year’s Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2) at Keeneland, becomes the fifth horse to win two different Breeders’ Cup races, joining Zenyatta (Classic and Distaff), Beholder (Juvenile Fillies, Distaff), Stephanie’s Kitten (Juvenile Fillies Turf and Filly & Mare Turf) and Secret Circle (Juvenile Sprint and Sprint). Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., Golden Pal burst from post three in the five furlong turf event and immediately had daylight on the 12-horse field. Recent Green Flash (G3) and Eddie D. (G2)-winner Lieutenant Dan gave chase in second while a length faster than Caravel in third as Golden Pal flashed through the first quarter-mile in a quick :22.25 and the half-mile in :43.91, while extending his lead to a length-anda-half ahead of Lieutenant Dan as they turned for home.
But the race was never in doubt in the stretch as Golden Pal finished a length-and-a-quarter in front of Lieutenant Dan in second with Charmaine’s Mia closing to get third with Emaraaty Ana (GB) another neck farther back in fourth. They were followed in order by A Case of You (Ire), Gear Jockey, Kimari, Glass Slippers (GB), Florida-bred Extravagant Kid, Chaos Theory, Fast Boat and Caravel. Golden Pal finished the five furlongs on the firm turf in :55.22, just .47 off the course record of :54.75 set by Fast Parade set in 2006. Golden Pal went off as the 5-2 favorite and paid $7 to win. “I was happy to get the lead easily and he responded to me when I asked him for the run down the stretch,” Ortiz said. “I was confident coming for home and he still felt very strong. He was ready today.” Trainer Wesley Ward has long said Golden Pal may be the best horse he has trained and reaffirmed that after the victory. “He’s got the title—he’s the best horse [I’ve ever trained],” Ward said. “Bruce Headley, a great trainer, once told me when he had [2000 champion sprinter and 2000 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1)-winner] Kona Gold, ‘stay in there long enough and you’ll get one as good as this.’ Continued on next page

“I was confident coming for home and he I hope everyone in horse racing has a horse like this, as special as he is. He’s just fast. He’s mature and he has so much upstairs, as well. He has so much natural ability. What a horse.” Golden Pal now has five wins in eight starts and the $520,000 first place check in the Turf Sprint increases his earnings of $1,299,056 as he joins the list of 176 other Florida-bred millionaires. With Golden Pal, there have been 29 Florida-breds who have won a Breeders’ Cup event. Golden Pal was unsuccessful in his first two career starts last year when second to fellow Florida-bred and future multiple stakes-placed Gatsby in a four-and-a-half furlong maiden special weight at Gulfstream in April before going to Great Britain to take on stakes company and finish second to future multiple group stakes-winner The Lir Jet (Ire) in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot going a straight five furlongs. He then won the $85,000 Skidmore at Saratoga before winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. He began 2021 with a three-length romp in the Grade 3 Quick Call going five-and-a-half furlongs on the turf before returning to Europe, only to disappoint with a seventh-place finish behind winner Winter Power (Ire) in the Group 1 Wooten Bassett Nunthorpe going five furlongs on the turf at York.

“I have no idea what happened in York,” Ward said at Del Mar in the days leading up to the Breeders’ Cup this year. “No excuses.” But Golden Pal rebounded with an impressive victory in the Grade 2 Woodford at Keeneland on Oct. 9 before shipping to Del Mar for the Turf Sprint. Golden Pal is by Uncle Mo out of Lady Shipman, by Midshipman and was bred in Florida by Randall E. Lowe. Lady Shipman was a graded-stakes winner on the track and has one other foal, Lieutenant General, a weanling by Omaha Beach. The victory is the second of the weekend for Ward and Ortiz, who teamed up to win Friday’s Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2) with Twilight Gleaming (Ire). It is the sixth Breeders’ Cup victory for Ward and 13th for Ortiz but first for both in the Turf Sprint. Trainer Steven Miyadi said of Lieutenant Dan’s runner-up performance: “He ran great, probably the best race of his life. He just wasn’t ready to run against a rocket ship.”

FTBOA charity and social committees. Russell is past president of the FTBOA and longtime director and officer. He and his wife Karen own the 158-acre Rustlewood Farm in Reddick. They have bred and or raced several graded stakes winners and currently campaign Best Pal (G2)-winner Pappacap. Russell, who has been instrumental in the FTBOA’s legislative role, governance and racing program development, is past chair of the charity/social committee and is a strong advocate of Florida Thoroughbred Charities. He is currently the chair of the FTBOA Farmland Preservation Work Group. Russell will be serving his fourth term on the FTBOA board. Bulmahn is an entrepreneur in various industries and opened GoldMark Farm, a 2,600 acre commercial thoroughbred training center in 2006. He serves on the Texas State University board of directors of the College of Business Foundation and is a member of the FTBOA Farmland Preservation Work Group. Bulmahn will be serving his second term on the FTBOA board. A native of England, de Meric currently operates with his wife Jaqui, the 240-acre Manuden Farm, de Meric Sales and Eclipse Training Center. Currently serving on the FTBOA Farmland Preservation Work Group, de Meric is also on the board of Horse Farms Forever and dedicates time to the Ocala Farm Ministry where Jaqui serves on the board. He has also served on the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company board since 2001. This will be the second term on the FTBOA board for de Meric. Other FTBOA board members include Fred Brei, Marilyn Campbell, Bobby Jones, Milan Kosanovich, Francis Vanlangendonck and Dr. Fred Yutani. ■

Lonny Remarks.qxp_Layout 1 11/23/21 5:04 PM Page 30
CEO’s Corner I’d like to take time to have a brief and pretty candid conversation with you about just a few of the notable opportunities and challenges facing our Florida thoroughbred breeding and racing industry so far in 2021 and what we anticipate for 2022. This past summer we were thrilled (as I’m sure you were too if you are a breeder) to increase breeder awards and stallion awards for the entire 2021 calendar year—which has not been a common trend around the country. Just as important, we will continue those same percentages into 2022 which is critical for industry stability going forward. And let’s not forget we did this without the important and long traditional contributions from slots at Churchill’s now decoupled Florida casino, formerly known as Calder Race Course. This year, we also faced a historically high stakes, often contentious and very intense regular legislative session which prominently featured multiple initiatives to reshape the state’s gaming/pari-mutuel landscape including decoupling all pari-mutuels and breeds. Plus, the surprise, show-stealing development late in the session of a far-reaching new tribal gaming compact signed by the Seminole Tribe and Gov. Ron DeSantis. The convergence of all these gaming tidal waves then brought about a previously unplanned and almost immediate special legislative session just on gaming. Though there were a host of issues of concern for our Florida thoroughbred industry, the FTBOA approached three particular challenges. First, we wanted to keep thoroughbreds coupled even though all the other racing breeds and jai alai were on the decoupling chopping block. We, the thoroughbreds, were included for probable extinction in the original draft language before the FTBOA went hard at this issue. A simple way to understand this issue is to note that decoupled tracks are not required to race live. However, they are allowed to retain all current and future gaming products and revenues from those products and stop contributing to purses and breeder awards. For thoroughbred people, there is simply no “upside” to decoupling. Second, we wanted to retain the non-profit racing permit held by the FTBOA and keep it from being forever eliminated. And third, we wanted to create a Florida purse and awards pool with new purse revenue to be allocated to both Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs. This would keep purses competitive and continue with upward growth potential in Florida’s expanded and hypercompetitive gaming environment. Through much hard work by the FTBOA lobbyist Matt Bryan and general counsel Warren Husband and most of the time finding ourselves going it alone, we were able to build solid legislative support from Senate president Wilton Simpson. With great assistance 30
THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2021
from president pro-tem Kathleen Passidomo and our entire Marion County delegation and others too many to mention, the thoroughbred tracks were the only parimutuel facilities that remain coupled. In my 10 years with FTBOA, we have consistently opposed decoupling and any material reduction in Florida’s vital and successful year-round racing circuit, often with little to no help from our industry partners. Our legislative education and outreach and the sheer scope of the economics and jobs associated with the Florida thoroughbred industry really have made a difference from Tallahassee to Miami. While the new law requires the revocation of dormant parimutuel permits where racing or jai alai has not recently been conducted, it preserves the non-profit thoroughbred permits including the permit held here in Ocala. We, the thoroughbred tracks and horsemen, were very disappointed that we were unable to pass legislation to create a new Florida purse and awards pool during the recent special session. I anticipate this will be a focused and united priority and message for the Florida thoroughbred industry in future legislative sessions. The thoroughbred tracks were particularly unhappy and frustrated with the terms of the new Seminole Gaming Compact. We and the horsemen understand that there are a number of unintended consequences that radiate from this incredibly large and complicated 30-year agreement that may create additional competitive burdens and makes it more challenging for the tracks’ popular racing programs to grow at the pace we all would like to see. We are working with our horsemen partners and the tracks and facilitating and coordinating where and when we can as the next session nears—particularly on the purse and awards pool and/or other revenue enhancing initiatives and presenting a united thoroughbred industry front. Looking ahead—and please don’t think I’m crazy—I have reason to believe that in the next several years, our Florida thoroughbred industry stakeholders and their leadership will make a herculean effort to work together for the common good of our industry. In the last few months, we have been in meetings with horsemen and track leadership that we requested with the motivation being to do our part in making a viable future for the Florida thoroughbred breeding and racing industry. I believe we are currently in or near a unique industry cooperation zone.
Lonny Remarks.qxp_Layout 1 11/23/21 5:04 PM Page 31
No doubt there are a number of good, intelligent and caring people trying hard and are committed to better cooperation, communication and moving forward. This same group of leaders continues to join us in seeking ways to advance/explore/work on enhanced revenue opportunities for the Florida thoroughbred industry and its participants. Very importantly, live racing dates at Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs individually and collectively remain relatively the same, including Gulfstream racing more than 200 days once again with modest shrinkage of the dates formerly run at Calder. Our vital year-round racing circuit continues, which is particularly important to so many Florida horsemen, owners, workers and their families and of course those who wager on our Florida product. The Stronach Group continues to invest huge money in their facilities including the new, innovative and popular Tapeta racing surface, making Gulfstream the only track in North America with three distinct courses; and new barns at their Palm Meadows Training Center in Boynton Beach. These have been impressive improvements that have been very well received by the entire Sunshine State thoroughbred industry. We are also always mindful and appreciative of the important and positive contributions of Tampa Bay Downs and the positive impact the track has on our Florida thoroughbred industry. As an industry and as a community/state/country and world, we must never underestimate or forget the disruptive uncertainty, negative health impacts and economic instability that the COVID-19 pandemic has inflicted and will inflict on so many, our industry, people and Association included. At the FTBOA, we stepped-up early in the pandemic and began embracing and modeling robust practices to safeguard our staff, members, board of directors and guests. Our policies and procedures, starting sadly and shockingly almost two years ago, have become best practices adopted in many workplaces. We are happy to say with gratitude and humble caution that none of our core FTBOA member programs and services, FEC operations or FTC’s support of retired thoroughbreds and student scholarships were materially disrupted or compromised during the very long stretch of this burdensome COVID road each of us still walks. I think it is important to pass along some significant statistics that illustrate the importance of Florida-breds at both Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs. An average of 96% of all thoroughbred foals that drop in Florida become registered Florida-breds. Additionally, 2019 and 2020 produced even more registered Florida-breds than reported preliminarily by The Jockey Club for those years.
When it comes to our highly acclaimed and lucrative FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes program, data in recent years shows impressively that more than 60% of the FTBOA registered foal crop are made eligible for the Florida Sire Stakes program with approximately 50% of those advancing toward fully-paid status. As far as how Florida-breds impact and contribute to the daily racing programs and seasons at the Gulfstream Park Winter Championship Meet and Tampa Bay Downs, as a breeder and/or owner of Florida-breds, I think that you may be very pleased to note the following statistics. It is clear that our fast and competitive horses, Association and Association programs, and the state’s breeding industry provides significant and irrefutable material and positive support to the Florida tracks and their horsemen, purses and incentives, viability and success. Florida-breds at Gulfstream Park won a very solid 32% of all races run during the winter meet of 2020-21. Of those Florida-bred winners, an attention-getting 66% were sired by FTBOA registered Florida stallions. And we expect our impact on the current Spring/Summer and Fall Meets at Gulfstream to be even more dominating. Finally, I would like to thank Dr. Phil Matthews for his phenomenal service as president and board member of the FTBOA. It is very easy to praise someone so deserving. I have had the honor to serve with Phil my first two years here at FTBOA with an added bonus of this past year to wrap up the three-year term limit of this volunteer office serving as president and board chair. I consider him a mentor, teammate and good friend. Nothing speaks more to his level of service and commitment to our Association and the Florida thoroughbred industry than his amazing 11 years of service with nine of those as an officer and executive committee member with three of those nine years serving as our president. We are fortunate his voting term on the board continues where he will serve on the executive committee in addition to the board of directors as immediate past president. We also look forward to continuing our good work under our new volunteer president Valerie Dailey along with our outstanding group of officers and directors. On behalf of everyone involved with the FTBOA, I thank you for your support, investment and contributions to our Florida thoroughbred industry.

FTC Charity Day Produces
Stonehedge Farm South Dedicates On Oct. 8, Florida Thoroughbred Charities raised more than $35,000 with a day of charity events including breakfast seminars, a luncheon with Kentucky Derby winning breeder Gail Rice, a silent auction, book signing, art show, a golf tournament and awards dinner/dance. The golf tournament was won by Stonehedge Farm South and Ocala Equine Hospital finished second. When accepting prizes, Stonehedge Farm South golfer Paul Sharp said, “This one’s for you Gil,” as he pointed up to the sky, signifying the deep loss felt by many upon the passing of the farm’s owner Gil Campbell in September. Phil Wright, the Chief Business Development Officer of the event’s title sponsor AdventHealth Ocala, spoke at the dinner highlighting the role their healthcare plays within the community and their mission. Marc Russell, general manager of Stone Creek Golf Club was key to the event’s success along with chair and FTBOA executive board member Valerie Dailey and golf co-chairs Debbie Green and Donna Delahunty. A number of celebrities attended the event including Mike McBath (Buffalo Bills), Mike Reilly (LA Rams), Reggie Branch (Washington Redskins Super Bowl 1984), Bob Stinson (Seattle Mariners), PGA instructor Mark Werning, Larry Green (Porsche auto racing, Matt Storm (World League of American Football), Steve Pisarkiewicz (Cardinals, Packers), Jacinto Vasquez (jockey) and Gerri Polci of the Four Seasons band. Florida Thoroughbred Charities is the charitable arm of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' & Owners' Association. Since 1990, FTC has strengthened and supported the community by raising more than $3.5 million for charitable organizations within the thoroughbred industry, the city of Ocala, Marion County and the state of Florida. Showing the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association’s commitment to thoroughbred retirement, the charity primarily funds the only female inmate program partnering with retired thoroughbreds in the United States. The Second Chances Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) farm at the Lowell Correctional Institution gives women a chance to learn equine skills needed for gainful employment after release. In 2020, the farm celebrated its 20 year anniversary. FTC also funds youth education and other community programs. ALL PHOTOS BY MADREN PHOTOGRAPHY

Equine Career Academy The Marion County Public School systems launched an equine career academy at North Marion High School on Nov. 16. The new program will give students from across the county an opportunity to specialize in the equine field and learn the skills necessary for the pursuit of a job, or future equine academic studies, via trade schools or institutions of higher learning. Middle school students sign-up through January and begin the courses in the fall. FTBOA board member Bobby Jones serves as an industry liaison to the program. ■
