T
he Florida Sire Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup are nearly the same age with the first running of the former coming in 1982 at Calder Race Course in Miami Gardens, Fla. That same year, a group of prominent thoroughbred breeders in Kentucky announced a plan to create the Breeders’ Cup and in November of 1984, thoroughbred racing had a year-end championship event that attracted the best horses, trainers and jockeys from around the globe. While the two events began on opposite coasts with the first Breeders’ Cup being run at Hollywood Park near Los Angeles in 1984, there has been a strong link between the two annual affairs which were both created to promote thoroughbred breeding.
In the 37 runnings of the Breeders’ Cup, 28 starters in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies have been alumni of the Florida Sire Stakes, which was known as the Florida Stallion Stakes from its inception until 2014 when the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association moved the series to Gulfstream Park after assuming management of the lucrative series in 2012. Although no Florida Stallion Stakes grads made it to Hollywood Park in 1984, a pair of Florida-breds ventured to Aqueduct for the 1985 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Grade 1) after competing in the FSS earlier that year and several have followed since. After winning the $400,000 Florida Stallion Stakes In Continued on page 37

Honey I’m Good Holds On to Win Regret After Starting Gate Gaffe Honey I’m Good burst from post four twice July 3. Before the start of the $75,000 Regret at Monmouth Park, Honey I’m Good broke through her starting stall prematurely as the six fillies and mares were loading for the six furlong test. But the assistant starters reloaded the Florida-bred mare and regardless of her mishaps moments before, she responded by breaking best of all in the race to carry jockey Gerardo Corrales to an early lead they would never relinquish. Let go at 6-1 with Grade 3 Bed of Roses Stakes third-place finisher Bayerness the heavy favorite at 2-5, Honey I’m Good took advantage of her fast start to produce a clear lead down the backstretch. Bayerness and 7-2 choice Bronx Beauty, who was second to Florida-bred Miss Auramet last time out in the $76,000 Politely Stakes at Monmouth on May 30, ran together in second as Honey I’m Good finished the first quarter-mile in a fast :22.29 and a length-and-a-half in front. Our Flash Drive Files Selene Stakes Victory Florida-bred Our Flash Drive started a big day for her owner Charlotte Weber and her Live Oak Plantation as she won the Grade 3 Selene Stakes with stablemate Sweet Souper Sweet third at Woodbine Racecourse on July 10 before Live Oak Plantation’s Souper Sensational won the Grade 3 Victory Ride at Belmont Park approximately 20 minutes later. It was also a record victory for trainer Mark Casse, who won his fourth consecutive Selene, a US$125,000 test for 3-year-old fillies going a mile-and-a-sixteenth on Woodbine’s Tapeta main track. Casse, who has won the Selene a total of seven times including last year with Florida-bred Two Sixty for Gary Barber and with Floridabred Dark Ending for Mockingbird Farm Inc. in 2001, has also teamed with Husbands to take four editions of the race. They combined for past wins with Dark Ending, Dixie Strike (2012) and Miss Mo Mentum (2018). Casse also won the 2019 with Power Gal (2019). Casse, who is a Hall of Fame member in both Canada and the United States, also trains Souper Sensational. California Lily broke quickly from post two in the Selene and went right to the front while Our Flash Drive started a bit slower from post three. However, Our Flash Drive and jockey Patrick Husbands quickly hustled up to challenge the leader as they went around the clubhouse turn. California Lily and Our Flash Drive finished the first quartermile in :24.78 before the former began to extend her lead to a length down the backstretch to finish the half-mile in :49.03 as Our Flash Drive continued to stalk in second. As they went around the far turn, Husbands cued Our Flash Drive to challenge for the lead and she responded with a two-wide move to draw even with California Lily while they completed six furlongs in 1:12.87. But Our Flash Drive continued her momentum and rolled to a clear lead turning for home as Munnyfor Ro took second after a slow start while Sweet Souper Sweet continued in third. Our Flash Drive drew off down the stretch under a hand ride from Husbands and finished in 1:44.69 on the fast track with Munnyfor Ro finishing second, two-and-a-quarter lengths clear of

Sweet Souper Sweet in third. California Lily was fourth followed by Gote Go and Danger. Il Malocchio was scratched. Our Flash Drive returned $4.70 to win. Making only her fourth career start in the Selene, Our Flash Drive was coming off of her first career win when she defeated special weight maidens by three-and-three-quarters lengths going seven furlongs on Woodbine’s synthetic surface on June 19 in her first start of the year. Last year, the bay filly finished seventh and fourth in two tries in maiden special weights at Saratoga in July and August. Our Flash Drive is by Ghostzapper out of Dynamotor, by Dynaformer and the US$72,312 first-place check increased her career bottom line to $110,744. Our Flash Drive is the first foal from Dynamotor. She also has an unraced, 2-year-old colt named Engine’s Ready by Hard Spun, an unnamed yearling filly who is a full-sister to Our Flash Drive and a weanling filly by Omaha Beach. ■

Sutherland Caps Four-Win Day With Key Biscayne in Monroe Stakes Chantal Sutherland’s well-timed ride aboard Key Biscayne gave the jockey her fourth victory on the day and the Florida-bred filly her first black type triumph in taking the $75,000 Monroe Stakes at Gulfstream Park on July 24. The Monroe was originally scheduled for a full gate of 14 fillies and mares to race a mile-and-one-sixteenth on the turf but was moved to one mile on the main track. That prompted six “off the turf ” scratches in addition to a “veterinarian” scratch and left a field of seven. Key Biscayne was off a bit slow from post four and was sixth of seven early behind 3-5 favorite Thissmytime, who sprinted to a clear lead from the rail. Florida-bred Thissmytime clicked off a first quartermile in :22.60 with apparent ease ahead of Elusive Molly on the outside in second and Florida-bred Mo of the West between horses in third. Meanwhile Key Biscayne patiently raced five lengths farther back in sixth with Global Brand trailing from another three lengths in arrears. Thissmytime took a one length lead into the turn but Starship Nterprise progressed to the front with a two-wide move after a half-mile in :46.10 as Global Brand suddenly advanced on the rail and Key Biscayne also began to threaten from the four path. Starship Nterprise turned for home in front and pulled away to more than a one-length margin past the eighth-pole as Global Brand chased in second ahead of Key Biscayne third on the outside. Starship Nterprise appeared the winner 100 yards from home when Key Biscayne produced a sudden acceleration to get the lead in the final jumps and finish a neck in front of Starship Nterprise in 1:36.90 on the fast track. Global Brand was another two-and-a-quarter lengths back in third followed by Thissmytime, Mo of the West, Elusive Molly and Florida-bred Heiressindy. Drapes, Eskimo’s Boss, Kahiko, Lovely Luvy, Shifty She, Sky Chaser and Snow Shower (GB) were scratched. “I had worked her and I worked another horse I’ve won on for Arindel. I loved how they worked,” Sutherland said. “I had so much confidence going into the race. I just love the way [Key Biscayne] handles everything.” Sutherland, who is riding at the Gulfstream Spring/Summer Meet for the first time, won earlier on the card with Florida-bred Hot Babe ($5.20) in Race 3, Hard Ten ($2.80) in Race 8 and Florida-bred Clapton ($20.20) in Race 9. Key Biscayne paid $14.40 to win. “I’m so grateful. I’m grateful to God, and I’m grateful to Gulfstream for being so amazing,” Sutherland said after the Monroe. “I’m so happy it’s worked out the way it did. Thanks to [trainer] Kenny McPeek, who helped me get fit to do this during the winter.” After taking a break during the COVID-19 pandemic, Sutherland

galloped horses for McPeek at Gulfstream this past winter during the track’s Championship Season. The 4-year-old Key Biscayne has now won four races with two seconds and two thirds from 14 lifetime starts while earning $244,190 from the barn of trainer Juan Alvarado. Slow to develop, the Arindel homebred daughter of the farm’s stallion Brethren out of Boa Twelve, by Lemon Drop Kid did not win until her sixth career start against state-bred, special weight maidens at Gulfstream in May of last year. She won her next start against first condition, $16,000 optional claiming allowance runners on the turf before later taking on the Grade 2 Lake Placid going a mile-and-one-eighth on the turf at Saratoga in July where she finished fourth behind winner Speaktomeofsummer. She was then third in the mile-and-three-sixteenths $500,000 Saratoga Oaks won by Antoinette on grass in August and fifth in Magic Attitude’s Belmont Oaks (G1) going a mile-and-one-quarter on the turf on Sept. 19. She then won a first level allowance race taken off the turf at Belmont in October in her last race of the year. In her first start of 2021, she finished seventh in the $75,000 Ginger Punch won by Shifty She over a mile-and-one-sixteenth on the turf at Gulfstream on June 12. ■
March to the Arch Rallies for Niagara Stakes Score Florida-bred March to the Arch chased down the pacesetters to win the US $84,842 Niagara Stakes on July 25 over Woodbine’s E.P. Taylor Turf Course. The stakes feature for 4-year-olds and older was run at a distance of about a mile-and-one-eighth on the grass. ple graded stakes-winner March to the Arch settled back in fifth early on behind Belichick and Theregoesjojo as a front-end duel ensued between Admiralty Pier and Primo Touch. The battle for the lead persisted through early fractions of :23.14 and :45.32, and continued all the way into the stretch, with the top pair as much as 10 lengths in front of rivals approaching the turn. However, March to the Arch saved ground on the bend then rallied outside of Belichick down the stretch. He reeled in the tiring leaders and went on to score by a widening four-and-a-half lengths in 1:45.15 over the ‘good’ course, with Belichick finishing second. Theregoesjojo edged out Primo Touch in a photo for show while Current was fifth followed by Sir Sahib, Admiralty Pier, Woodbridge and Mnemba Island. “He’s classy. Everybody would like to ride a horse like him,” Husbands said. “He’s got a serious, serious turn of foot.” Fresh off a runner-up performance in the Grade 3 Dominion Day at the start of July to open his six-year-old campaign, March to the Arch was sent postward as the 6-5 favorite and paid $4.40 to win. “In the last race, from reading the Form, I could see that there was no pace and he’s a closer. When we got to the first turn, I saw it and I thought ‘oh my god.’ So I had to press that horse [winner Mighty Heart] the whole way and he still hung in there, you know,” said Husbands in reference to March to the Arch’s season’s debut when he forced the pace early down the backstretch. “It wasn’t his style, but he still came back today and showed you he was a good horse.” Owned by Live Oak Plantation, the homebred son of Arch out of Daveron (Ger), by Black Sam Bellamy (Ire) won the Grade 2 King Edward Stakes over the E.P. Taylor turf last year in August prior to his second-place effort to fellow Florida-bred champion Starship Jubilee in the Grade 1 Ricoh Woodbine Mile on Sept. 19. His 2020 campaign, which also included a victory in the Sunshine Millions Turf at Gulfstream Park in January of last year, resulted in him being named by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association as their Florida-bred Champion Turf Male. 14

Shea D Summer and Competitive Speed have exchanged wins against each other in their last two starts but the Florida-bred Shea D Summer took the rubber match Aug. 7 at Gulfstream Park in the $75,000 Azalea Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at seven furlongs. Shea D Summer won the first meeting between the two stakes winners on June 5 when she won the $75,000 Game Face Stakes by twoand-a-half lengths ahead of Competitive Speed in second going six-and-a-half furlongs at Gulfstream. Then Competitive Speed evened the score in an overnight handicap at Gulfstream going seven furlongs on July 10 after Shea D Summer broke in the air at the start and compromised her ability to use her front-running style. While Shea D Summer came back in deep stretch to take the lead, Competitive Speed rallied to win by a length ahead of Coach Jer’s Joy in second while Shea D Summer finished two-and-a-half lengths back in fourth. In the Azalea, however, Shea D Summer and jockey Emisael Jaramillo broke best of all from post four and went right to the front with fellow Florida-bred and 4-1 third choice Kmar Taj to her inside as Competitive Speed and Leonel Reyes chose to sit behind those two in third. Shea D Summer raced through the first quarter-mile in :22.97 while a half-length in front of Kamar Taj, who took a short lead from the outside as the two fillies raced around the turn a length-and-a-half faster than Competitive Speed. But Shea D Summer was just beginning her run when they turned for home as they finished the half-mile in :45.36 with Florida-bred Restofthestory now joining the fray as Competitive Speed could not keep pace. Shea D Summer drew off in the run for home as Restofthestory used a ground-saving trip to take over the second spot from the resilient pair of Competitive Speed and Kamar Taj. Shea D Summer cruised home to finish with a three-and-a-quarter-length advantage in a final time of 1:23.11 on the fast track. Restofthestory was second, a head in front of Competitive Speed in third with Kamar Taj fourth. Coach Jer’s Joy and Florida-bred Princess Secret completed the order of finish. “I think everything was in the break today. I just told Jaramillo, ‘Let’s just have a better break and get early position and go from there,” winning trainer Carlos David said. “I expected a little more pressure
early from [Kamar Taj] and [Restofthestory]. [Kamar Taj] did come up and challenge her, but she responded really well.” Shea D Summer, who also won the $60,000 Juvenile Filly Sprint at Gulfstream Park West in November in her second start, has now won half of her eight career starts with a second and earnings of $170,071. Owner Shea D Boy’s Stable purchased Shea D Summer out of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring Sale last June for $35,000 from the consignment of Ocala Stud, who also bred the dark bay or brown filly. Shea D Summer is by Summer Front out of Empress of Gold, by Empire Maker and paid $5.20 to win as the 8-5 favorite. ■ Florida Focus continues on next page
Fortuitous Florida-bred Pappacap Impressive in Best Pal George and Karen Russell breed to sell their Florida-breds as yearlings. And like most of their other homebreds, the Russells did not intend to keep their current 2-year-old star Pappacap. But in a story of good intentions gone awry gone to unforeseen fortune, they unintentionally kept the son of Gun Runner only to see him win the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar Aug. 7. “We send [our yearlings] to Keeneland to sell in September,” George Russell said on TVG from the Del Mar paddock before the race. “Then there wasn’t enough [expected value at the time] to run him through the [Keeneland September] sale, so we scratched him out. So we had another plan—a 2-year-old in-training sale. So we sent him to [trainer] Mark [Casse] and we’d go watch him work. Then Mark says ‘he needs more time. You need to put him in the next sale.’ Then the next sale comes along and Mark says ‘he still needs more time.’ And then obviously, we didn’t sell him. Keeping Pappacap, whether by design or despair, proved prosperous as the bay colt won the $200,500 Best Pal by four-and-threequarters lengths against five other juvenile foes in the six furlong traditional prep race for the Grade 1 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity to be run at the seaside oval on Sept. 6. After breaking his maiden while leading from start to finish against special weight maidens going five furlongs at Gulfstream Park in his career debut on May 14, Pappacap, who is trained by recent Hall of Fame inductee Mark Casse, went to the post in the Best Pal as the 2-1 favorite and did not disappoint. Ridden by Joe Bravo from post three, Pappacap broke evenly but was unable to get the front-running position he took in breaking his maiden as fellow Florida-bred Bet On Mookie sprinted to the lead from post one while being joined by Everett Nevin Stakeswinner Thirsty Always to his outside. Meanwhile a confident Bravo kept Pappacap tucked in just behind the two frontrunners, who clicked off the first two furlongs in a quick :22.11. 16

Bet On Mookie and Thirsty Always continued their battle in tandem around the turn as Pappacap saved ground in third before tipping out to the three path as they came into the stretch after a half-mile in :45.79. Pappacap took a short lead as the trio passed the eighth-pole together but shook free with a sudden acceleration in the final furlong before easily winning by four-and-three-quarter lengths in 1:11.66. Finneus made a late run to get second and finish a length-and-a-half in front of Bet On Mookie in third followed by Thirsty Always, Aquitania Arrival and Florida-bred Our Empire, who broke slow at the start. “I was glad to see how well he settled in behind those two up front,” Bravo said. “His race in Florida, he just was pure speed. You don’t know if that’s the way they like to go. But he showed another dimension today. Mark Casse sends them out ready.” “He ran different. He stalked, which was a little concerning. once he came around the turn there, he started his run and I think this is better,” George Russell said after the race. “Better finish. Better win. He’s maturing and getting better. I think he’s going to do what Mark expects of him.” Casse assistant Allen Hardy-Zukowski gave credit to Bravo for the patient ride that he said showcased the colt’s promise. “Joe [Bravo] gave him such a great ride coming out of the gate,” he said. “[Pappacap] seemed loaded and when Joe asked in the stretch he responded. I was glad to see that, especially coming off a layoff. It was great.” Pappacap earned $120,000 for winning the Best Pal and increased his bankroll to $165,762. He paid $6.60 to win. Pappacap is out of the graded stakes-place Pappascat, by Scat Daddy, who was second to Strike Charmer in the 2014 Cardinal Handicap (G3) at Churchill Downs. She has two other foals of racing age, both winners including Redrock Trail, by Trappe Shot; and Tynan, by Liam’s Map. She also has a yearling colt by Bolt d’Oro and a wean-
ling colt by Omaha Beach. She was bred to War of Will in 2021. TVG personality Brittney Eurton also asked Russell on air about the TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1), which will be run at Del Mar on Nov. 5. “It’s on the radar,” Russell said. “He needs to show us he deserves to be there and if he does, we’ll be there.” But Karen Russell said she had more short term plans for Pappacap to show her appreciation. “This is most exciting thing we’ve done in probably our lifetime,” Karen Russell said. “It’s fabulous. It’s very, very important to us and we are very happy. I can’t wait to feed him some carrots.” Pappacap is the fourth Florida-bred to win the Best Pal. The Mark Glatt-trained Collusion Illusion, who was bred by Donald R. Dizney, won in 2019 and the Suzanne Collins-bred Flame Thrower won in 2000 from the barn of Bob Baffert. Florida-bred Spanish Way, who was trained by Laz Barrera, won the second running of the race in 1977 when it was the Balboa Stakes. Spanish Way was bred by Forty Oaks Ranch. ■
Florida-breds Run 1-2-3 on the Fourth in Bob Umphrey Warrior’s Pride topped a Florida-bred trifecta and earned an additional $25,000 win bonus to boot July 4 at Gulfstream Park as he took the $100,000 Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint by a neck ahead of Tiger Blood in second, who was another length-and-a-quarter faster than third-place finisher Yes I Am Free. Tiger Blood and Yes I Am Free are also Florida-breds. The Bob Umphrey attracted a field of 11 sprinters, 3-years-old and older who went five furlongs on the turf and the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association presented a win only bonus of $25,000 to a victorious Florida-bred. Trained by Antonio Cioffi, Warrior’s Pride also won his second stakes of the year in four starts having also taken the $75,000 Texas Glitter Stakes going five furlongs on the Gulfstream Park turf on March 20. Warrior’s Pride and jockey Emisael Jaramillo took up their familiar position in front as they quickly had daylight on the foursome of Tiger Blood, Nitro Time, Yes I Am Free and Brother Satchmo, who were together in second. After two furlongs in a quick but expected :22.02, Warrior’s Pride and Emisael Jaramillo extended their lead to two lengths around the turn as Yes I Am Free gave chase in second with Tiger Blood and Citrus Burst another two lengths back. Warrior’s Pride appeared strong down the stretch while keeping a safe, two length margin on Yes I Am Free before Tiger Blood appeared in the middle of the track full of run.

Warrior’s Pride had a length on Tiger Blood with 50 yards to run but that frame vanished as they finished in :57.30 on the turf labeled as good. Citrus Burst was fourth followed by Harry’s Ontheloose, Romario, Florida-bred and 8-5 favorite Caribou Club, Ete Indien, Sovereign Warrior, Brother Satchmo and Nitro Time. R Mercedes Boy and Ournationonparade were scratched. A Just for Fun Stable Inc. homebred, Warrior’s Pride is a 3-year-old by Poseidon’s Warrior out of Florida-bred Sophia’s Pride, by Pleasant Tap. He has now won four of nine starts while earning $170,232. ■ THE FLORIDA HORSE • SEPTEMBER 2021

BY BROCK SHERIDAN Cajun’s Magic paid $15 to win. Following the race, trainer Michael Yates said he was not surprised by the close finish and revealed his prophetic conservation with Marilyn Campbell in early July after each had completed their first victories. “After they broke their maidens, Mrs. Campbell asked me which one I liked best,” Yates said. “I said, ‘Personally, at this point,’ I feel like we have the exacta. I don’t know which one’s the best.’ “It’s quite a thrill. [The Campbells] have been such a big part in the Florida breeding industry. HALLANDALE BEACH, FL — Gil and Marilyn Campbell won and Owner’a Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes for the 17th time and the Dr. Fager division for the fifth time July 31 when their Cajun’s Magic defeated stablemate Dean Delivers by a neck to complete the homebred exacta. A field of seven 2-year-olds by registered Florida sires went six furlongs for a purse of $100,000 in the 39th running of the Dr. Fager. While running in the name of Gilbert C. Campbell or under their long time stable name Stonehedge LLC, the Campbell’s green and white silks have also been carried into the winner’s circle following the Dr. Fager by Blazing Sword in 1996, Two T’s at Two Bs in 2012, My Brown Eyed Guy in 2013 and Breeze On By last year. On a day when total handle on Gulfstream races hit a Dr. Fager/Desert Vixen day record $10,136,959, Dean Delivers and Hope in Him were both sent to the post at 8-5 with the latter getting the slight edge as the wagering favorite while Cajun’s Magic was 6-1 at post time. After a good start by all, 9-1 Laki Lio shot to the front from post one and had a length advantage on Hope in Him in second with Dean Delivers another half-length back in third while Cajun’s Magic and jockey Jesus Rios were mid-pack. Laki Lio raced into the turn after a quarter-mile split of :22.10 as Dean Delivers ranged up to challenge on the outside at the five-sixteenths pole and Cajun’s Magic began to pick up horses while racing three-wide. As Dean Delivers and Cajun’s Magic raced in tandem past the quarter-pole while ticking off a half-mile in :45.42, Laki Lio surrendered into third with Hope in Him completing his best running while two lengths farther back in fourth. Dean Delivers was able to hold off Cajun’s Magic until they had just more than an eighth of a mile to go when Cajun’s Magic took to the front on the outside. The tenacious Dean Delivers never quit and came back again on the rail but was repelled by his stablemate as they finished in 1:11.02 and ten lengths better than a late running Golden Special in third. They were followed by Merlin, Big and Classy, Hope in Him and Laki Lio. Lightening Larry and Palimonium were scratched.

Yates trained and co-owned owned with Robert Eversole at the end of the stallion’s racing career. Cajun Breeze is now co-owned by the Campbells and has stood throughout his tenure as a stallion at their Stonehedge Farm South in Williston. “It’s pretty surreal. [Cajun Breeze] is throwing some nice horses. I think the best is yet to come from him,” Yates said. “His first couple crops, he had some pretty small numbers from some pretty ordinary mares. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell have bought half of him and have bred a decent number of mares to him. The proof’s in the pudding.” Cajun’s Magic has more Florida breeding on his bottom side as he is out of the Campbell’s homebred mare Mollie’s Magic, by Factum, who has produced two other horses of racing age. Both siblings are winners including Turn on the Magic, by Journeyman Stud’s leading Florida sire Khozan and an earner of $112,179; and Poseidon’s Magic, by Poseidon’s Warrior. She also has an unnamed weanling filly by Journeyman Stud stallion St. Patrick’s Day. The Campbells also own a portion of Khozan. Cajun’s Magic was second to Of a Revolution in his first start against special weight maidens going five furlongs at Gulfstream on May 29 before winning a state-bred maiden special weight going fiveand-a-half furlongs at Gulfstream July 3. His first-place check in the Dr. Fager increased his career revenues to $112,900. Cajun’s Magic gave his sire Cajun Breeze his third winner in the $100,000 Florida Sire Stakes Dr. Fager in the last four years including the Michael Yates-trained Cajun Firecracker, who represented the stal-

The annual Florida Sire Stakes series is for juveniles sired by accredited Florida stallions. Trained by J. David Braddy, My Sassenach finished second to Queen Camilla in a five-and-a-half furlong maiden special weight against fellow Florida-breds on July 1 in her only other start, which did not deter the connections going into the Desert Vixen. “I thought she was a real good filly the first time we ran her,” Braddy said. “We worked her nine days in front of the race, scoped her, and she was clean. We ran her in that race and she scoped with a lung infection. I think that cost us the first race, but we’ve been high on her all along.” Owner Michael Sucher purchased the filly for $152,000 in the name of his Champion Equine LLC at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales April Sale from breeder Craig L. Wheeler’s consignment. “Her first race she had a mucous infection and blockage and she still only lost by a length,” Sucher said. “So we felt high coming into this race. She’s been working lights out and she ran that way. Also we put blinkers on her to keep her more focused and that seemed to work.” My Sassenach broke well from post six and was quickly in a fourhorse battle for the early lead with Rufa Red Knot, on the rail; Stone Beauty to her inside and Demurely on her right. Rufa Red Knot, who was making her career debut in the Desert Vixen, was able to put a length advantage on Stone Beauty in second with 7-5 favorite Noble Dreamer and My Sassenach a joint third as they finished the first quarter mile in :22.13. Rufa Red Knot extended her lead to a length-and-a-half as she took the field of eight around the turn but My Sassenach began to makeup ground and was only half-length off the lead as they clicked off a half-mile in :45.74. My Sassenach took over at the top of the stretch and continued to draw away while drifting out to win in a final time of 1:12.17 on the fast track. Demurely rallied from her seventh position earlier in the race to get second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Rufa Red Knot in third. They were followed by Noble Dreamer, Silver Smile, Soul Flight, Ukiyo and Stone Beauty. Rachel’s Rock, Royal Rocker and Solar Girl were scratched. “It’s good for me. I’ve won this race four or five times, but not recently. It’s good to be back with a nice filly,” Braddy said. “She’s kind of a thick filly. We liked her at the sale. She breezed well and she galloped out well. She acted like she could run.” All of Braddy’s other victories in the series came when the races were known as the Florida Stallion Stakes and run at the now shuttered Calder Race Course. Braddy trained Stacie’s Toy, who won the Desert Vixen and Susan’s Girl divisions in 1989. He also won the Desert Vixen in 1991 with Mystic Obsession and the 1998 Affirmed with Sly Rajab. Braddy has saddled 47 starters in the series with his first trainee being Elusive Agenda, who was unplaced in the second division of the 1984 Susan’s Girl. My Sassenach worked an eighth-mile in :10.20 at the under tack session for the OBS April Sale where Sucher said he purchased her
with the Florida Sire Stakes in mind. “I feel great,” Sucher said. “We bought her for the Florida Sire Stakes. She ran like we thought she would. We’re looking forward to the [Florida Sire Stakes Susan’s Girl] division. Hopefully, she stays sound and she’ll make her next start there. We’re excited. We have a good horse and a good trainer so we’ll keep our fingers crossed.” “I think the seven-eighths might be all right. I’m not so sure about the long [My Dear Girl at a mile-and-one-sixteenth on Sept. 25 at Gulfstream]. We’ll just have to see,” Braddy said after winning for the fifth time in the series. My Sassenach is by Uncaptured and is the first foal out of Cynthia’s Fury by Utopia (Jpn). Cynthia’s Fury also has an unnamed yearling filly by Double Diamond Farm stallion First Dude and a weanling colt by Pleasant Acres Stallions’ Bucchero. The dark bay or brown My Sassenach earned $60,000 for winning the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Desert Vixen and increase her earnings to $71,900 in two starts. The Florida Sire Stakes has a storied history dating back to 1982, when it was created by Ocala breeder and owner Dan Lasater. The sixrace series has produced six Eclipse Award champions: Awesome Feather (2010 Juvenile Filly), Big Drama (2010 Sprint), Holy Bull (1994 Horse of the Year and 3-Year-Old Male), Smile (1986 Sprint), Brave Raj (1986 Juvenile Filly) and Not Surprising (1995 Sprint Champion). ■

Following is more information about the candidates.

Laurine Fuller-Vargas Fuller-Vargas has devoted her entire life to thoroughbreds and the racing industry. She’s a third generation horsemen, and as a child, spent every moment possible in the barn or at the racetrack. She learned everything from picking feet, walking hots and rolling bandages to rehabbing injured horses and galloping racehorses. At age 12, Fuller-Vargas became Massachusetts’ youngest licensed owner and in 2008 her dreams came true when she saddled Ask Queenie, the richest Massachusetts-bred in history, to her first win as a licensed trainer. From that point on, there was no looking back… she knew she would never go a day without horses in her life. She moved to her family farm in Florida in 2006. Her duties included all aspects of the industry including breaking/training babies, sales prep, breeding mares, foaling, race training and racing horses year round in Florida to aftercare of retired racehorses. Today, after many years of devotion and leadership, her grand26

father’s legacy, the 65 acre Cedar Lock Farm is still a successful and thriving farm home to more than 25 thoroughbreds. It is also home to the local beloved Run for the Ribbons. In 2014, she founded Run for the Ribbons Inc., a 501(c)3 program dedicated to improving the lives of OTTBs after their racing careers. Fuller-Vargas truly cares about the horses and the integrity of the industry and feels she has a lot to offer the FTBOA and its members. She lives in Morriston with her three children. She is currently serving her first term on the board and has dedicated time to thoroughbred retirement programs and assisted the FTBOA charity and social committee.

The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association will hold its annual meeting on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. Due to the COVID19 pandemic, the meeting will be held via Zoom only. Regular members will receive notice by email with instructions on how to register for the meeting. If you are a regular member and you have not provided the FTBOA with your current email address, please contact the FTBOA immediately. For 2021, there are five director vacancies on the FTBOA board to be filled for three-year terms running until October 2024. Pursuant to the Association’s bylaws, the current board of directors nominated the following five candidates for these vacancies: 1.) Laurine Fuller-Vargas; 2.) George Russell; 3.) T. Paul Bulmahn; 4.) Nick de Meric; and 5.) George Isaacs. Each candidate agreed to run and to serve as an FTBOA director. The FTBOA bylaws also allow a candidate to self-nominate by circulating a petition and obtaining 25 member signatures. No such person was filed. As provided in the Association bylaws, because there are only five candidates for five director vacancies, members will not be required to cast ballots and these five candidates will be deemed elected to office upon the presiding officer calling the FTBOA’s annual meeting to order. Current board member Richard Kent ends his term at the start of the annual meeting.
George Russell, FTBOA Treasurer A past president of FTBOA, Russell was born and raised in South Florida. He and his wife, Karen, visited the area and were impressed with the area’s beauty, the slower paced lifestyle and the beautifully manicured horse farms. In 1987 they purchased 158 acres on Hwy. 225A and established
Rustlewood Farm. Their initial purchase of four yearling fillies from neighbor Elmer Heubeck yielded Rustlewood’s first stakes winner. All Considered won the I Guarantee It Stakes at Gulfstream Park and produced a number of winners for the Russells, including Consider the source, winner of the 2005 Florida Stallion Stakes My Dear Girl. In addition to these black type winners, Rustlewood has also bred, raised and/or raced stakes horses All Milady, All in the Book, Blue Pepsi Lodge, Inside Affair, as well as multiple Grade 1-winner Chaposa Springs, Grade 1-winner You and I, Group 2-winner Distinctly North, Grade 2-stakes winner Mach Ride, Grade 3-winner Prudhoe Bay, Grade 2 stakes winner El Kabeir, and current Grade 2-winner Pappacap. Russell is the founder and current president of Russell Engineering, Inc. He is a past chairman of the board of the Florida Transportation Builders’ Association. He currently serves on Ocala Thoroughbred Racing Association’s board. Russell has been instrumental in FTBOA’s legislative role, governance and racing program development, is past chair of the charity/social committee, and a strong advocate of Florida Thoroughbred Charities. Russell is currently the chair for FTBOA Farmland Preservation Work Group.

Nick de Meric Nick grew up in England, showing ponies as a youngster and graduating to three-day eventing and point-to-pointing when he turned sixteen. After graduating from Bradfield College, he worked as a journalist in London for The Field magazine, before studying Rural Estate Management at Cirencester Agricultural College in Gloucestershire. He then did stints with English trainers R. C. Sturdy, Brian Swift and Roger Stack before moving to Australia and working for the legendary trainer Tommy Smith. Later he became interested by North American racing and sales, and in the early 1980s worked for Clay Camp, Mason Grasty, Lee Eaton and Fred Seitz before settling in Ocala by way of Louisiana, where he met his future wife, Jaqui. He and Jaqui rode for a number of farms in the Ocala area before marrying in 1983. Nick and Jaqui had their first two-year-old consignment that year and the fledgling business quickly grew into
a major two-year-old training operation. Their graduates include You and I, Chaposa Springs, Smokin’ Frolic, Wallenda, Forty One Carats, Ask The Moon, Capo Bastone, Northsider, Subordination, Central Banker, Housebuster, Sharp Azteca, Champagne Room, Paid up Subscriber, Fashion Plate, Currency Swap, Materiality, Annals of Time, Dream Rush, War Story, Practical Joke, Successful Appeal, Separationofpowers and Knicks Go. Nick has also served on the board of OBS since 2001. Mostly recently, he has produced OBS sales toppers with a colt by Into Mischief out of Dixie Song for $1.3 million, a colt by Quality Road out of Wasted Tears for $1.5 million and a filly by Ghostzapper out of Palanka City for $445,000. In 1992 they bought Eclipse Training Center adjacent to their Manuden Farm, now an totaling 240 acres. Both their children; Ali, now married to Brandon Rice and running their own business, and Tris, who with his wife Valery, have become crucial partners in the operation, are accomplished horse people in their own right. Nick serves on the FTBOA Farmland Preservation Work Group and is on the board of Horse Farms Forever and the NATC. He also dedicates time to the Ocala Farm Ministry where his wife serves on the board as Vice President. George Isaacs A past FTBOA board member, George Isaacs grew up with livestock on his grandparents’ Kentucky farms. He started as a groom (Stanley Petter’s Hurricane Hall). In 1981, Isaacs worked for the late Joe Taylor at John Gaines’ Gainesway Farm as a stallion groom, assistant stallion manager and yearling manager. In 1989, Isaacs became stallion manager at Arthur Appleton’s Bridlewood Farm in Ocala. In 1992, he was general manager for Allen Paulson’s Brookside South Farm. In 1996, Isaacs returned to Bridlewood as general manager, overseeing the farm’s operation ever since. During that time, much more than 100 Florida-bred stakes winners and 12 Grade 1 winners have been bred by the farm, including Florida Champions Jolie’s Halo, Wild Event, Forbidden Apple, Southern Image, David Junior and Eden’s Moon. Isaacs helped manage the career of Kentucky Derby/Preakness winner Smarty Jones for the Chapmans. Leading Florida stallions Skip Trial, Stormy Atlantic, Halo’s Image, Put It Back and Big Drama all have stood at Bridlewood. Isaacs continues to manage Bridlewood’s operations for John and Leslie Malone who purchased the farm in 2013. Isaacs is the chair of the Equine Studies Program at the College of Central Florida, a Horse Farms Forever board member, and an Advent Health Ocala Foundation board member. “The industry has been very good to me. I would like to give back to Florida by having a small part in ensuring the next generation’s future legacy.” ■ SERITA HULT PHOTO

silks of Adam Corndorf and Bonnie Baskin’s Blue Haven Farm, the then 7-year-old bay daughter of Indy Wild started 2020 by defending another title as she won the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Stakes for the second consecutive year over a mile-andone-sixteenth on the grass at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 18. The Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf also started a four-race winning streak for Starship Jubilee that continued with victories in her native Florida in the Grade 3 Suwannee River Stakes at a mile-and-an-eighth on the turf at Gulfstream on Feb. 8 and in the Grade 2 Hillsborough going the same distance at Tampa Bay Downs on March 7. Trainer Kevin Attard then gave Starship Jubilee a four-and-a-half month break before returning to win the Grade 2 Ballston Spa Stakes going a mile-and-one-sixteenth on the inner turf at Saratoga on July 25. She suffered her first loss of the year in her next start when she finished fourth in the Grade 1 Diana Stakes at Saratoga won by 2020 Eclipse Award-winning champion turf female Rushing Fall. But she rebounded with fervor in her next start as she overcame a rough start and traffic down the backstretch to win the Grade 1 Ricoh Woodbine Mile on the turf at Woodbine. Equine Care
Hock Injuries By Heather Smith Thomas The hock is one of the largest, most complex and hardest worked joints in the horse’s body so it must be strong and sturdy to avoid injury. The hock is often under great stress because of the strenuous work we ask the horse to do, and may be injured during high speed performance. Dr. Olivia Rudolphi (Rudolphi Veterinary Services, in Noble, Ill.) says some injuries may be due to developmental/congenital lesions such as an OCD within the joint—that might not show up until the horse is put into training and doing more exercise. “Lameness causes can vary between the young horse and the more mature horse. In the young horses we may see a puffy hock or even a foal with some sort of insult to the joint. As young horses start training, we may see the hock become swollen if there is something like an OCD lesion, and there may be lameness,” she says.
Depending on where the injury is located—which bone and surface within the hock—the horse might need arthroscopic surgery. “There might be interference with joint articulation. Some cases are more involved than others. If we see a problem in one hock we definitely want to check the other one because these conditions can be bilateral, just at different extents,” she explains. “If an OCD fragment is removed, then afterward we may put in a biologic product like IRAP to help heal those—to help the joint surface improve and ultimately have fewer problems on down the road,” says Rudolphi. Other injuries may be due to a simple blunt trauma or a puncture if the young horse runs into something while running around the pasture. “In the older horses with hock changes we may see a narrowing of the joint due to arthritic changes. Some of this could be due to how

they were used as a young horse (how much stress on the joints in an athletic career). If those early problems are not seen and addressed, there may be some cartilage weakening later on and arthritic changes later in life,” she says. Some hock problems may be due to conformation, and how straight or angled the hind leg is, and which stresses are put on the hock joint. “Poor hoof management and shoeing can also have repercussions on up the leg. Sometimes arthritic hocks are simply due to overwork and overuse, with lots of wear and tear.” Fortunately there are many treatments today that can help. “We have several types of therapeutic modalities that can be used if we know there are changes going on, and if there is pain in the joint. We also use a variety of biologics like IRAP, stem cells and PRP to help improve the joint environment and to manage or decrease the pain and damage. The world of biologics is constantly evolving, therefore we are able to continually provide more effective and successful modes of treatment,” she explains. Sometimes with these horses it may be time to find a new job, if the hock joints can’t stay sound in a strenuous athletic career. “Horses that have been racing, for instance, can be hard on high motion joints such as the hocks. They may need a different job. Also, within the hock, some of the small bones can fuse together and sometimes this can decrease the pain. This is not always the case but is possible. Ideally the horse upholds its normal joint space and function,” says Rudolphi. With some hock problems it’s wise to monitor the changes and take radiographs annually. “This can help guide the management of these horses; your management will probably change over time. If you have been treating the hock condition, it may become non-responsive to that particular treatment and you may have to try something else or add in a different anti-inflammatory or joint therapy,” she explains. There are some topical approaches like use of shock wave therapy or magna waves. “These can be a useful secondary therapy, as well as making sure the horse is on a good exercise and conditioning program. It is helpful to keep the hind end strong so the horse can maintain adequate functional muscle mass. If the muscles, tendons and ligaments are strong and correctly conditioned, there is less risk for damage,” she says. Shoeing can also make a major difference. Shoeing can help or hinder a hock problem, so you want a good farrier who can keep the feet well balanced. “Sometimes we have to take radiographs of those feet to make sure we have them balanced in the hind end. We sometimes miss that when looking at the hind feet. If there is an imbalance or incorrect angle on the hind feet, it puts more stress on the hock joints,” Rudolphi explains. If the hind feet are not balanced, both the joint and soft tissue structures surrounding the hock will be stressed. There may be some soft tissue tears on the ligaments around the hock. These can also be due to abnormal work or strain. Continued on next page THE FLORIDA HORSE • SEPTEMBER 2021

Joint health is very important in the equine athlete, and many people use joint supplements to try to help protect the joints from wearand-tear damage. “Some types of joint supplements are fed (added to the grain ration) and some are injected intravascularly or intramuscularly. Horses are all a little different in terms of what they respond to, and what works best, for these complementary therapies,” she says. Dr. Jillian Mills, Presidio Equine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation, Encinitas, Calif. says the hock is a combination of high and lowmotion joints. “These joints can undergo different pathological changes. Often with hocks we see either acute traumatic injuries, DOD (developmental orthopedic disease) or fatigue-related injuries. Acute injuries often involve fractures which may include the tibia and cannon bones, as well as collateral and intra-articular ligament injuries,” says Mills. “The upper joint (the high-motion joint) more often has developmental issues such as OCD fragments and subchondral bone cystic lesions. If there is an OCD fragment, the horse may need surgery to have the fragment removed,” she says. “The joint environment is not as healthy as it would be if an OCD
36
THE FLORIDA HORSE • SEPTEMBER 2021
lesion was not present. On a pre-purchase exam, osteochondral fragments can be difficult to determine whether surgery may be indicated in the horse’s future. For a young horse that hasn’t had the opportunity to prove itself, if we find an osteochondral fragment in a joint that carries excess fluid, where the horse trots off lame following flexion testing, there’s a higher probability that it will need surgery to remove that chip. The presence of the OCD fragment is an indication that the joint is less healthy, and the horse is more prone to developing arthritis,” says Mills. By contrast, if the horse is 10-years-old and has already proven itself in competition, the OCD lesion on a pre-purchase exam might not be an issue. “With racehorses, however, we are generally dealing with a significantly younger population of horses with a shorter prospective career, so surgery is often recommended,” she says. “Fatigue-related problems might include subchondral bone disease and breakdown of the joint’s cartilage. When that happens we have to manage these horses for arthritis. We sometimes see arthritis in the upper joint, but this is significantly less common than in the lower joints and often results in debilitating lameness. Usually when we’re talking about fatigue-related injuries in the hock we are dealing with arthritis in the lower hock joints rather than the upper joint.” If there are changes in the upper joint, clinical signs generally include significant increase in joint fluid and pronounced swelling. “If there is an osteochondral fragment in there, there is often joint swelling and the horse may be positive to flexion testing. However, when a horse reacts positively to hock flexion, this is not a specific finding and pain could be originating from either the high or low-motion joints.” says Mills. “With the lower joints, sometimes we can palpate thickening of the joint capsule, but you cannot determine an increase in joint fluid. It’s more of a clinical assessment, especially if we are not doing blocks. In cases of under-performance, we might see that the horse is a little short-strided in both hind limbs and a bit worse on the inside versus the outside of a circle, and positive to flexion. We might consider medicating the joint as a diagnostic therapeutic, which is essentially a treatment trial to see if the horse improves. Bilateral hind-limb asymmetry is most common in an arthritis type of presentation versus something acute, where you might see pronounced joint or soft tissue swelling. In those situations, we often see a unilateral lameness, meaning only one limb is affected.” One hock may have suffered traumatic injury. “Between the talus and the calcaneus, within the high-motion tarsocrural joint, there is another articulation called the talocalcaneal joint. This is a low-motion articulation that can also develop arthritis. When this occurs, the pain can be quite debilitating and extremely difficult to manage, but this is also relatively rare,” says Mills. ■

Reality at Calder in 1985, Scat Dancer went to Aqueduct for the Juvenile and responded with a third-place finish as fellow Floridabred Tasso nosed out Storm Cat for the victory. Florida-bred Real Courage, who was 13th in the FSS In Reality that year, also started in the Juvenile but stumbled badly leaving the chute and was eased. A year later, owner Dolly Green and trainer Melvin Stute shipped Brave Raj east from California to Calder to win the $75,000 Florida Stallion Stakes Susan’s Girl and the $400,000 FSS My Dear Girl before returning to Southern California to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Santa Anita and later be honored with an Eclipse Award as the 1985 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly that year. A race earlier in the 1986 Breeders’ Cup, Florida-bred Smile, who swept the FSS Dr. Fager, FSS Affirmed and FSS In Reality in 1984, became the third Florida-bred to win the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) following Eillo in 1984 and Precisionist in 1985. In 2010, the FSS produced the second graduate to win a Breeders’ Cup race in the same year when Fred Brei went to the Breeders’ Cup with his undefeated filly Awesome Feather, who won that year’s J J’sdream Stakes, FSS Desert Vixen, FSS Susan’s Girl and FSS My Dear Girl in the name of his Jacks or Better Farms. By Brei’s Floridabased sire Awesome of Course, the homebred Awesome Feather did not disappoint in the Grey Goose Juvenile Fillies, winning by twoand-a-quarter lengths and later taking home the Eclipse Award as the
Champion 2-Year-Old Filly. She would retire as a Grade 1 winner of the Gazelle Stakes at Aqueduct with earnings of more than $1.9 million. In the last 10 years five FSS alumni have taken on Breeders’ Cup company after local success including Scandalous Act, who had won all three divisions of the FSS against fillies in 2013; and Three Rules, who swept the male divisions of the FSS in 2016. Scandalous Act finished sixth to winner Ria Antonia in the 2013 Juvenile Fillies and Three Rules duplicated that placing in the 2016 Sentient Jet Juvenile won by Classic Empire, both run at Santa Anita. Two Sixty was the most recent Florida-bred to use the FSS as a springboard to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in 2019, but she finished out of the money at Santa Anita. Like Smile in 1986, there are other FSS graduates who went on to compete in the Breeders’ Cup after their juvenile year. Unbridled, winner of the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1); Hollywood Wildcat, who won the 1993 Breeders’ Cup Distaff; Big Drama, winner of the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1); and 2012 Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1)-winner Little Mike are all graduates of the FSS program. This is not to say that one should run off to bet the futures in Breeders’ Cup Juvenile after any of this year’s FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes, but don’t rule out one of this year’s Florida Sire Stakes contenders should they make it to Del Mar for the Breeders’ Cup in early November either. ■

It runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion, 2232 Northeast Jacksonville Road in Ocala. include an original Florida thoroughbred art show by Alaura Allen; an FTC charity silent auction; and a Fred Hooper book signing by author Bill Heller and Wanda (Hooper) Quigley. A luncheon co-hosted by the Florida Thorobred Fillies will feature Kentucky Derby winning breeder Gail Rice as the speaker. Golf kicks off after lunch. For sponsorship, event tickets, or golf information, call 352-639-2160 or email tgantt@ftboa.com. Oct. 22 - The Annual Membership meeting will be held virtually on Oct. 22. Regular members watch your e-mail for details. Nov. 15 - The Florida Sire Stakes deadline is for yearlings whose May 15 payment was not made. It is $500. Missing this yearling deadline means a $5,000 fee on January 15. Do not assume a horse you purchased in a sale or privately has had a payment made. Sales catalogs list horses who are FSS eligible at the time of the sale because the deadline had not passed yet, meaning a payment may still be due. Contact FTBOA at 352-629-2160 to check. The two-year-old payment deadline is Jan. 15. Nov. 23 - Horse Farms Forever is hosting “Conservation Summit: Conversations about Conservation” at Ocala Breeders’ Sales from noon to 1:30 p.m. The educational workshop is about balancing growth while preserving Marion County’s 193,000-acre Farmland Preservation Area. The purpose of the Summit is to inspire the preservation of the horse farms and agricultural lands that are fundamental to Marion County’s global brand as the Horse Capital of the World®. Speakers include John C. Malone, the largest private landowner in North America and historic Bridlewood Farm owner, and Ocala Metro Chamber and Economic Partnership CEO Kevin Sheilley. The results of the county-wide “Quality of Life” survey will also be presented. FTBOA members receive 10% off with code FLTB2021 at https://www.horsefarmsforever.com/conservationsummit/.
