victors of the Feb. 9, $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome, Magness and Tarco, as he’s often called, are a consistent winning combination at HITS Ocala, and tough to beat in the clutch. McMurtry would join Magness four trips later with a clear ride of her own to set up the jump-off. Another Illinois native, Laura Linback, steered Woodrun’s Uppsala to a clear round three trips later, and Harold Chopping of Southern Pines, N.C., aboard Penelope Straight and Jenna Hoy’s Little Glen’s Valentino completed a clear round of their own four trips after Linback. The next 11 failed to make it around the course clear, as rails down in the triple and at the last fence caused trouble for many. Twenty-eighth to go was Mickie Sage of Denver, Colo., and Katie Shannon’s Ultimo, who broke the unlucky streak with a clear round and joined the group moving on to the jump-off. After another string of riders failing to go clear in the first round, all eyes turned to the final entry of the class, German grand prix rider Andre Thieme and Seth Vallhonrat’s Coco 135. Thieme added another threat to capturing the win when he finished with all fences intact. At the end of the first round, the six teams advancing to the jump-off featured a mix of young, up-and-coming riders combined with a solid group of seasoned veterans, all look-

Moneyy ing to take home the first-place purse. Cabral’s short course featured eight obstacles and a time allowed of 57 seconds. The track finished at the same last jump that posed trouble for so many in the first round. Magness and Tarco Van Ter Moude were the first to jumpoff and set the Great American Time to Beat at 42.223 seconds with no jumping faults. The team would ultimately finish in second place. McMurtry and Just An Illusion had a mountain to climb next as Magness and Tarco Van Ter Moude are consistently fast in the jump-off. They rose to the occasion and shaved nearly a second off the time and took over the lead in 41.439 seconds. Next to show was Linback aboard Uppsala who posted the third double-clear effort in a row when they timed in at 42.849 seconds, which finished in third. Chopping and Little Glen’s Valentino returned next, and finished with four jumping faults in 41.927 seconds, which ultimately placed them sixth. Sage and Ultimo delivered a clear jump-off round in 44.148 seconds to ultimately finish fourth. Last to show in the jump-off was Thieme and Coco 135, who were second in Thursday’s $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. The team had the fastest time by more than a second but in a heartbreaking finale, the last fence came down adding four jumping faults that put them in fifth place and crowned McMurtry the winner.
“Ocala is home for him [Just An Illusion],” said McMurtry. “He loves coming out for the big Sunday classes. We just have such a great connection together and he gives me a lot of confidence for the bigger classes.” With the win, McMurtry currently has $15,000 in prize money and two of the eight grand prix needed to become eligible to for the 2011 Pfizer Million. With 10 more opportunities to compete in qualifying grand prix at HITS Ocala, McMurtry will have plenty of chances to make her goal of qualifying for this year’s Pfizer Million a reality. HCD

Mazzoni Magic
Silvio Mazzoni rides Remonta Habano to his first grand prix victory of the circuit.
fter a successful two-week Pre-Circuit and a short break, show jumping resumed at HITS Post Time Farm in Ocala, Florida on Feb. 8 with the Ocala Winter Classic, the first of six AA-rated weeks of competition. Silvio Mazzoni of Leesburg, Va., piloted his own Remonta Habano to a decisive win in the Feb. 10, $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. “It was a beautiful course,” Mazzoni said. “This is a very special horse for me and we work so well together.” Mazzoni and Remonta Habano have been competing together for a year, and are one of several new horse-and-rider teams showing at HITS Ocala this season. Last year, the duo enjoyed six weeks at HITS Culpeper and finished the circuit with a win in the $15,000 Brook Ledge Open Jumper Prix at the Culpeper Finals. Thirty riders took the field last Thursday to navigate the first-round course set by course designer Bernardo Cabral of Lisbon, Portugal. The course featured 12 obstacles and 15 efforts. The last line was a liverpool to a triple combination to a wide oxer to finish the course, and proved to be the toughest part of the course as 15 of the 30 teams had faults in that line. Three trips in, Hunter Holloway of Topeka, Kansas, riding Hays Investment Corp.’s Argentina looked to be the first to go clear, but crossed the timers just a hair over the time allowed of 80 seconds. Holloway was one of three teams to rack up a single time fault in the class and, as a result, she finished in eighth place. Mazzoni followed Holloway and produced the first clear effort of the class within the time allowed. Three trips later, David Tromp of North Salem, N.Y. and Beyaert Farm Inc.’s Casey laid down the next clear ride, ensuring a jump-off. Six trips later, Germany’s Andre Thieme joined the jump off list with Seth Vallhonrat’s Coco 135. Four trips later Tromp returned to the ring on his second mount, Renoir du Buisson, and went clean, which gave him a two-horse advantage in the jump-off.
A
Jordan Coyne of New Port Richey, Fla., and her own Lazaro were the last to go in the first round, and were the final pair to advance, setting the stage for an exciting jump-off. Mazzoni and Remonta Habano set a strong pace for the rest of the field with a clear round in 37.414 seconds, the Great American Time to Beat, which earned them the win in their first grand prix outing of the season. “I’m looking forward to showing in Ocala for the next four weeks,” Mazzoni said. “It’s really nice here and there are a lot of competitive horses.” HCD

New to HITS Ocala this year is the Thoroughbred Hunter Series – a class designed solely for horses of any age registered in any stud book recognized by the Jockey Club. The 3’ class, sponsored by Kinsman Farm and Jessica Steinbrenner, is open to all riders. The prize money of $2,500 is spread throughout five weeks of showing. At the end of this year’s circuit, the horse with the most points wins a custom show cooler. The inaugural winner of the Thoroughbred Hunter during the Ocala Winter Classic/Week I was Geoffrey’s Mon, a 9-year-old bay gelding owned by Frances Robinson and ridden by Aaron Vale. “Geoffrey has made my world a better place,” said Robinson, who is an advocate for re-training and finding homes for Thoroughbreds off the track. “I have only been jumping for four years but what an experience I have had for a new chapter in my life. This horse is awesome.” Robinson plans to begin showing Geoffrey’s Mon herself soon, and she’s encouraging anyone with a Thoroughbred hunter to get involved in the Thoroughbred Hunter Series this year at HITS. Classes are held Wednesday and Thursday afternoons each week in Hunter Ring 2.

Florida Horse Park Working together for the common good. heard a story recently about a young girl who was lost in a swamp. Searchers combed the woods for hours looking for the young girl. They struck off on their own, wandering far and near without any luck. After many hours of looking for the girl they reconvened and reevaluated their efforts. After some discussion, a member of the group said, “As individuals looking by ourselves, we will never find her – we must hold hands and search the swamp again as one.” The others agreed and all the rescuers held hands, combing the swamp inch by inch as a group. Some short hours later, but all too late, they found the lifeless body of the girl in the swamp. As they carried her away, one of the searchers said, “If we had only held hands and worked together sooner.” We have to work together. The opportunity is at hand. We have a window to make the Florida Agriculture Center and Horse Park Authority a viable function of the state and county economy and area culture. Differences and individualism are not uncommon in anything. It’s how those differences are managed that is important. Think of it as a relationship – you and your partner are surely not exactly the same and agreeable on every miniscule detail of life. But – a successful relationship will work through those differences and make it work. It takes communication, the occasional improvisation and of course, compromise. The key to this is working together for the common good. What is the common good of the Florida Horse Park? A haven for equestrians and outdoor enthusiasts of every sort. From world-class equestrian events and agricultural interests to RV owners, dog trainers and festival organizers, we are by design, a host for all of those and more. The Florida Horse Park, whether directly or indirectly, affects us all! It is not uncommon for a person who works in the Thoroughbred industry to compete in team roping or enjoy trail riding or be an avid runner. Thoroughbreds retired from the racing industry are often re-homed to individuals who take them on to another competitive show career. The entire horse industry is interconnected. Not a simple end-to-end connection, but a complicated web of connections that demand we all work together to keep each other afloat as a community within horses and without. Here is my invitation to work together for the common good and betterment of the area’s equine industry through the communal thread of the Florida Horse Park. Be a part of the solution. Support the horse park to move it forward towards completion. It will serve as a catalyst for long-term job creation that will aid in improving the economy throughout the state. The horse park will also serve our community as a facility that offers a competitive and recreational hub in an eco-friendly atmosphere for residents with all sorts of interests – not just horses. The Florida Horse Park is an opportunity for us all. Let’s work together now.
