Florida Horse Park Memorial Tree Program The Florida Horse Park, a 500-acre equestrian and recreational green space in Ocala, recently announced a new fundraising project to help further the growth of the park and provide additional aesthetic qualities. “The Florida Agriculture Center & Horse Park Authority’s master plan’s theme is ‘Making the Land a Hero,’ ” said C.J. Marcello, executive director of the Florida Horse Park. In that effort, the board of directors is offering a Memorial Tree Program. Trees play a very important role in protecting the beauty and naturalism of the park. By planting trees at the park, we are able to enhance the landscape naturally.” The program will encourage donors to consider two contribution levels: $500 for a tree smaller than 3” in diameter, or $1,000 for a

Equestrian Grants Available The USA Equestrian Trust is pleased to announce it is now accepting applications for financial grants to non-profit equine organizations to be funded in 2011. Go to www.trusthorses.org/grant/request.html and fill out a grant application for the USA Equestrian Trust Grant Program. The deadline is May 2 at 5 p.m. EST. Despite the continued economic struggles, the Trust’s board was pleased to grant nearly $135,000 to seven applicants in 2010. Past recipients of grants include those doing equine health research, equestrian land conservation, and educational programs. The Trust welcomes applications for need-based and means-tested worthy equestrian projects and encourages applicants to detail those in their applications. Funds available for grants include $77,000 reserved for Hunter and Jumper not-forprofit purposes or programs in California and Nevada. Applicants for this fund should make clear their intention to apply for funds available from this specific reserve. “While no public charity can make grants to every deserving group, USA Equestrian Trust encourages any non profit in the equestrian community who needs assistance to consider completing the grant application,” commented Alan F. Balch, USAET President. The Trust has made several improvements to the online application process this year. The revamped form includes a review page

on which applicants can both proof and edit their applications before submitting. All applicants must submit a proposed budget for their project as a word processing document. Applications cannot be submitted without one. If you have any questions applying, please e-mail about grants@trusthorses.org. All grant applications MUST be submitted no later than May 2. 22 entries in the class. One week later, seasoned hunter Betty Oare took matters into her own hands and rode Capone to win the blue. “I was so surprised when I won,” Oare said. “There were a lot of great rounds in the class, and I was super excited when they announced us as the winners. All the classes leading up to the final are so important, and so far they’ve been wonderfully done.” Prize money for these classes will range from $5,000 to $10,000 throughout the HITS Ocala rated circuit. In order to become eligible for the Diamond Mills $500,000 3’3” Hunter Prix Final, a rider on any horse/horses will need to compete in five or more Devoucoux Hunter Prix at any combination of HITS Shows during the qualifying period. Once a rider has competed in five Devoucoux Prix, they will become eligible and their points on their leading horse will place them in HITS Hunter Prix Final Rider Rankings. HCD

HAPPY HUNTERS There’s new excitement this year for hunter riders, too, with HITS announcing its inaugural Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final. To qualify for the event, riders compete each week of HITS Ocala in the $2,500 Devoucoux Hunter Prix. Professionals, amateurs, children and adults all competed in this class during the pre-circuit. wo weeks of pre-circuit shows from Jan. 19-30 got Ocala rolling into smooth competition at HITS Post Time Farm, where riders, owners, trainers and vendors settled into the Horse Capital of the World. This year’s HITS Ocala continues through March 20 and features non-stop showing, with high-level hunter classes and top show jumping on the schedule. Grand prix events – always the most visible classes at the show – are highlighted even more now, thanks to HITS moving into its second year of hosting the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix. The HITS Ocala Pre-Circuit offered two qualifiers for the Pfizer Million: the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. Ocala newcomer Andres Rodriguez and established superstar Tracy Magness took first-place honors during the two weeks. “Andres [Rodriguez] plans on showing a lot more here in Ocala this season in order to qualify for the Pfizer Million,” said trainer and

fellow grand prix veteran Sergio Campos. “He’s a talented rider and I’m excited that he won the grand prix here.” Magness and Tarco Van Ter Moude appear to be poised for another successful run as the team added to their storied career with a victory in not only the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, but also a win in the $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome. Ocala is packed with a virtual who’s who of high-performance riders this year. Aaron Vale, Patty Stovel, Hugh Graham, Derek Petersen, Roberto Teran, David Tromp, Laura Linback, Kirk Webby and David Jennings are just of few of the heavy hitters eager to make their mark on this season’s circuit.

Cruisin to Victoryy

euben Goetzl and Melinda Cohen’s Cruisineety Z made their mark during the HITS Ocala pre-circuits by securing the overall win in the four-leg, $20,500 Marshall & Sterling Child/Adult Jumper Championship, after winning the First and Third Legs, and finishing sixth in the Second Leg, for a total of 130 points. “It feels great!” said Goetzl, who doubles as a Staff Assistant for the House Judiciary Committee in Washington, D.C. when he’s not showing horses. “It’s been such a great event to compete in over the past two weeks and I’m really happy.” The First and Second Legs were held during the Ocala January Classic, which saw Goetzl and Cruisineety Z lead the way in the overall standings with 75 points coming into the final two legs. If that wasn’t enough, Goetzl also captured the blue in the Second Leg of the competition aboard his other mount, Papillion Peanut, owned by Melinda Cohen, which put him in the number five spot of the overall standings with 66 points after the first half of the competition. The Third and Fourth legs took place on Friday and Sunday of the Ocala January Festival, over courses designed by Ocala’s Doug Russell. Goetzl and eight-year-old Cruisineety Z saved the best for last when, as the final entry of the class, they out rode 35 horseand-rider combinations in the $4,000 Marshall & Sterling Child/Adult Jumper Championship - Third Leg on Friday. Friday’s class was offered as a II.2.A/B option, with all 13 of the riders who advanced choosing the B option in the jump-off. “Cruisineety is very spooky, so I have to try hard to get her to go clean,” he explained. “She can spook at a lot of jumps. There were some very tight lines and the jump-off time was also tight, so I had a lot of galloping to do.” Goetzl’s mother and trainer, Melinda Cohen, works closely with the winning duo. “Reuben has had this horse [Cruisineety Z] since she was 3 and they’ve worked very hard together to get to where they are today,” Cohen said. “It’s very exciting for us all, and I couldn’t be any more proud of him.” “We’re off to a great start,” added Goetzl, who headed back to Washington, D.C. for the off-week. “I’d really like to thank Jennifer Davis for everything she’s done for us so far. She really made it possible for us to show here these past two weeks and we’re looking forward to coming back for the rated circuit.” HCD

HITS founder Tom Struzzieri shares a bit about HITS history, business, family and the future.

Horse Capital Digest: You produce HITS circuits all over the country, but you chose Florida for the very first location in 1982. This year’s HITS Ocala Winter Circuit marks its 30th season of Florida shows. What’s been your game plan to maintain this longevity and growth? Struzzieri: Winter showing in the northeast was never going to grow because it’s just too cold! There was already a concentration of horses in Florida and throughout the southeast, and horsemen from up north were already traveling to warmer climates for the winter, either to Florida or to the old Arizona Circuit, so I knew the customers were going to be there. I felt there was an opportunity to offer a different product in Florida that might appeal to a broader group of exhibitors. Fortunately, I was right, and the circuit has grown continuously for three decades. The HITS blueprint is “There’s Something for Everyone.” You’ll see this at all of our shows. From short stirrup to grand prix, a trainer can bring every customer in their barn and find something for them to show in. What’s better than a kid showing in the beginner equitation at their very first horse show, and in the ring next them, you have top grand prix riders who have shown all over the world. That’s really such a wonderful part of our sport. Horse Capital Digest: HITS seems to strive to be a family-friendly environment, for competitors and for spectators. How is your own family involved in the show? Struzzieri: All of my kids ride a bit, as does my wife. They don’t compete, but they know how to ride and they enjoy it. My family travels with me to Ocala for the winter and my kids attend the Education Station, the on-site school. It’s a great experience for them. And when things get busy, they help out at the

show too. They’ll help out in the restaurant, or help hand out ribbons, and even help out in the show office. You see so many families in the horse business, and I am so glad that I’m able to have my family around me and that they all enjoy being involved at the show in one way or another. Horse Capital Digest: The economy. How has the circuit evolved to accommodate your clients, and what do you see looking forward? Struzzieri: We tried to be ahead of the curve when the economy started to decline. The customer was becoming a savvier consumer - if they were going to show less often, they were going to be more selective about where they showed. We knew the most important thing was to keep them coming to show with us. So, we froze prices and offered discounts at every one of our circuits. We focused our attention to our customer service capabilities and tried to be sure we were understanding and working with our customers. We tried to sway with the wind, so to speak, and I think it has paid off. Horse Capital Digest: How do you think our industry should encourage new people to get involved in the sport of hunters and jumpers? Grassroots, grassroots, grassroots. That’s where it all comes from. We need to keep reaching into that group of up-and-coming riders and encourage them to spread their wings. It was my vision with the Marshall and Sterling League when I started it more than 20 years ago; it was focused on the child and adult riders who were just getting a taste of top-ranked A-rated showing. I am proud to say that many of the youngsters who participated in the league back then are some of the top hunter and jumper riders and trainers in our industry today. I think the continuing growth of the sport at that level will only lead to great things in the future. HCD

New Stallions

To Stand in Florida Standout Thoroughbred stallions Musket Man, Suave and

Cool Coal Man have been added to the stallion rosters at two local farms. usket Man, a 5-year-old, millionaire son of Yonaguska, will begin his stallion career at Vinery Summerfield, Fla., for a $2,500 stud fee. A Grade 2 winner with six victories, including four stakes scores, Musket Man also placed eight times from 16 career outings and earned more than $1.2 million. “Musket Man is an exciting addition to the Vinery Florida roster,” said stallion director Declan Doyle. “As a Grade 2 winner and Grade 1-placed millionaire, he dodged no one at the racetrack while demonstrating the

qualities and class breeders crave in a stallion. Local breeders will no doubt remember his stirring win in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3).” Raced by Eric Fein and Vic Carlson and trained by Derek Ryan, Musket Man was never worse than third in 14 consecutive starts, including five Grade 1 events, which included the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Met Mile, Whitney and Carter. The stallion won at distances from six furlongs to 1 1/8 miles at ages 2 through 4. On the road to the 2009 Triple Crown, Musket Man

won the Tampa Bay Derby and the Illinois Derby (G2) and finished third in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness after encountering troubled trips. Suave, a millionaire son of A.P. Indy—Urbane, by Citidancer, will stand for $4,500. Suave’s first crop of 2-yearolds had 16 winners and four stakes horses. As a racehorse, Suave was a multiple graded stakes winner and earned more than $1.3 million. His dam, Urbane, also earned more than a million dollars in her racing career. The multiple Grade 1 winner bankrolled $1,018,568 and notched eight career victories. Tom Ludt, president of Vinery Ltd., said, “Sure we wanted to find another son of A.P. Indy, but the key was that any potential stud had to be positioned with serious racehorse prospects. We are excited to work with the Darby Dan staff and I think this is a win/win arrangement, not only for us but for Florida breeders.”

COOL COAL MAN TO HARTLEY/DE RENZO Cool Coal Man, who won the 2008 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park on his way to $929,718 in earnings, will stand at Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds this year for a $5,000 fee. The 6-year-old stallion is a son of 2003 Horse of the Year Minsehaft and the Rubiano mare Coral Sea. Cool Coal Man finished his career with 10 wins, including five stakes victories, from 30 starts. He won two of five starts as a juvenile, then returned in 2008 to capture the Fountain of Youth and the Spend a Buck Stakes at Monmouth Park. He also finished third behind Big Brown in that year’s Haskell Invitational (G1) at Monmouth. Racing for owner Robert V. LaPenta and Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito, Cool Coal Man earned two more stakes victories at age 4 in 2009, taking the Albert the Great Stakes at Saratoga and the Lord of the Night

Stakes at Belmont Park. He also placed in graded events that year. Last year, Cool Coal Man won the Skip Away Stakes at Monmouth and placed in two more graded events. For his career, he earned 14 triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in races ranging from 6 ½ furlongs to 1 1/8 miles. Rebecca Hayden, Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds’ director of stallions, said, “Not only is he nearly a millionaire, being a son of Mineshaft and a grandson of A.P. Indy, this is a sire line that is proving over and over to be the sire of sires. As word has traveled, we have had an immediate response to this horse and believe that he will spark a new Florida breeding market. We couldn’t be more pleased to have him with us.” HCD

The roster of stallions is equally impressive.” Visit www.obssales.com, e-mail obs@obssales.com or call (352) 237-2154 for more information.

Approved Helmets

Required USEF passes new safety helmet rules for eventing and dressage riders. he Board of Directors during January’s United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Annual Meeting approved new helmet rules for riders in both eventing and dressage - just two weeks after dozens of stakeholders in equestrian sport met with the goal of improving rider safety across disciplines. “If the technology is available to reduce head injuries, the time to use it is now,” said USEF President David O’Connor. “I am very proud of our organization for taking this very important step. It is a huge direction of change.” Briefly, the first rule change requires anyone on a horse to wear an ASTM/SEI-approved helmet at all times while mounted on competition grounds at U.S. nationally rated eventing competitions. The rule change is effective immediately. Further specifics regarding the changes to the rule for Protective Headgear for Eventing (EV 114.1) will be posted in the USEF rulebook (visit www.usef.org). The United States Eventing Association (USEA) helped shepherd the rule change through the The attention to safety USEF committees during USEF’s Annual in eventing has led to a Meeting. “The attention to safety in eventing has 40-percent decrease in led to a 40-percent decrease in rider injuries rider injuries between between 2007 and 2011,” said Malcolm 2007 and 2011. Hook, USEF Eventing Safety Officer and —Malcolm Hook chair of the USEF Eventing Technical Committee. “The Eventing Technical Committee could see no reason to delay implementation of a probably inevitable and statistically justifiable rule change in an effort to continue this encouraging trend.” Effective March 1, 2011: For Dressage, anyone mounted on a horse must wear protective headgear except those riders age 18 and over while on horses that are competing only in FEI levels and tests at the Prix St. Georges level and above (including FEI Young Rider Tests, the USEF Developing Prix St. Georges Test and the USEF Brentina Cup Test). Additional details regarding the changes to the rules for Protective Headgear for Dressage will be posted on the USEF rulebook online. The USEF Board of Directors approved both the eventing and dressage helmet rule changes on Jan. 23 at the con-

T

clusion of USEF’s Annual Meeting. Sara Ike, USEF managing director of eventing, said that while eventing riders long have been moving toward tougher rules, it wasn’t until early 2010, after Olympic dressage rider Courtney King Dye was seriously injured in a riding accident that the dressage world began to seriously consider stricter helmet use. “Dressage riders called the Courtney King accident their ’9-11,’ ” Ike said. King Dye, who remained in a coma for a month following her accident, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and currently is undergoing rehabilitation. Earlier this month, a Riders4Helmets Helmet Safety Symposium held in Wellington, Fla., was deemed a huge success by participants at the event. Representatives from USEF, USEA, the United States Dressage Foundation, the United States Hunter Jumper Association, Racing, Polo, Helmet Manufacturers, Helmet Testing Authorities, Leading Equestrians and Medical Experts met with the goal of improving rider safety – and left pledging to work together across the disciplines to do just that. HORSE COUNCIL NEWS

Control Split as 112th Congress Convenes he 112th Congress convened in early January, facing many of the same issues left over from the previous Congress. But they might remain on the table as the emphasis in this Congress will be on cutting government programs and spending, reducing the deficit and debt, and spurring job growth. The House of Representatives has shifted to Republican control. Democrats still control the Senate, but the majority is smaller. More than 100 new members have taken their seats in the house and senate, nearly a 20 percent turnover. “Issues important to the horse industry will be on the table. Comprehensive immigration reform, Internet wagering, tax reform, animal welfare, trails legislation, equine health, and the farm bill are important to the equine community,” said Jay Hickey, president of the American Horse Council, which represents the horse industry in Washington. “Overriding all debate, however, is how existing programs can be paid for and whether new programs can be initiated in a Congress that will be focused on reducing spending and the size of government.” Under new House rules, any federal program, whether existing or new, involving spending increases must be offset by cuts of an equal amount in another program. The program cannot be funded by tax increases. “In addition, Congress will be looking for ways to raise much-needed revenue. The horse industry must be vigilant to ensure that such revenue is not raised unfairly at its expense,” Hickey said. In what’s been called a “wave” election by

T

many, and a “shellacking” by President Obama, the Republicans gained control of the House in the November elections, picking up 63 seats. Ninety-six new members are in the House freshman class, only nine of whom are Democrats. The ratio is 242 Republicans and 193 Democrats. In the Senate, Republicans gained seven seats, leaving the Democrats in control, but with less of a cushion. The Senate now includes 53 Democrats and 47 Republicans, with 16 new Members. Neither party is close enough to the 60 votes needed to stop a filibuster under Senate procedures and force through controversial legislation; but the Senate is considering revising the filibuster rules and that may make it easier to get bills to the floor. There are new leaders in the House. John Boehner (R-OH) has been elected Speaker of the House. Eric Cantor (R-VA) is the new Majority Leader. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is now the Minority Leader and Steny Hoyer (D-MD) the Minority Whip. Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) will remain as Senate Majority Leader and Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) remains Minority Leader. With the Republican takeover of the House, the chairmanships of all the House Committees have passed to Republicans from Democrats. The makeup of the House Committees has also changed with Republicans having many more seats on each committee. This will make it easier for Republicans to pass legislation in the House. But the Senate is still controlled by Democrats and getting some House bills through the

Senate will still be difficult. Then there is always the final backstop of a Presidential veto. So there’s no clear sailing for Republicans. While Republicans have made strong gains, bi-partisanship and compromise will be necessary to get any bills actually passed into law. A fundamental question to be answered by the new Congress is whether the bi-partisan cooperation exhibited in the recentlyconcluded lame-duck session of the last Congress will hold for the new Congress. That lame-duck session saw the extension of the Bush-era tax cuts, the reinstatement of the estate tax, the extension of unemployment benefits, the ratification of the nuclear arms treaty with Russia, and the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” But there is precedent for cooperation and compromise when each party controls one chamber. That split control has seemed to clarify the need to work together if anything is to get done. “Like most industries, the horse industry’s legislative concerns don’t break along partisan lines. The industry must work on a bi-partisan basis with members of Congress from both sides of the aisle,” Hickey said. “The AHC and the horse industry have been working with Congress for four decades. This is a new Congress with more than 100 new members. The AHC has already called on its Congressional Cavalry to welcome both the new and returning Members of Congress and to explain the importance of the horse industry to the nation’s agricultural, economic, sporting and recreational life.” “The horse industry has a $112 billion affect on the economy and support 1.5 million jobs. Every state has a horse industry. Fortyfive states have more than 20,000 horses. The equine community must continue to ensure that the 112th Congress recognizes that,” Hickey said.
