Welcome
to HITS Ocala 2017 A brief overview of the 2017 HITS Ocala Winter Circuit A
ll 10 weeks of the current HITS stand in Ocala have featured USEF National- or Premier-rated Hunters. All shows count toward the Horseware Ireland Grand Circuit Awards, Marshall & Sterling Insurance League, and the HITS Championship in Saugerties, N.Y. this September. The Great American $1 Million Grand Prix returns to the stage in the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium on Sunday, March 26. The second jewel of the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping debuted with great success in 2014 and we look forward to treating exhibitors and spectators alike to another tremendous event! The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup CSIO4*, an official World Ranking Competition, will take place Friday, Feb. 17 during the Ocala Winter Festival. Over $400,000 was offered in the FEI Jumper division throughout the week, including $200,000 in the Nations Cup and $150,000 in the Grand Prix. The Overlook VIP Club offered a unique hospitality experience including world-class culinary presentation, complete with complimentary beer and wine service. The Ocala Horse Properties Stadium is the fulltime Grand Prix Ring. The stadium, located on HITS property just across 137th Avenue, opened to rave reviews three years ago. The former Grand Prix Ring is Jumper Ring 1 and provided a second Feature Jumper Ring for horses and riders moving up the ranks. The Overlook VIP Club will be at the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium for the entire circuit, serving breakfast and lunch each show day throughout the circuit. The former VIP area was replaced by a lovely cafĂŠ serving breakfast and lunch, with covered seating overlooking Jumper Ring 1 and the Main Hunter Ring. Footing in all the Hunter Rings and Hunter Schooling Areas has been redone to match the footing in the Main Hunter Ring. Follow the progress on our Facebook page. The safety and well-being of your horses, and peace of mind for you, is our top priority. Over the past year, HITS has been at the forefront of im-
plementing a standard Equine Health Protocol at all its shows. The Bio-Security Plan and Required Vaccination Protocol that HITS developed is being emulated across the country. Please be sure to review the requirements as printed in the prize list, and check HitsShows.com prior to your arrival to review the most up-to-date information.
With $3 million in prize money and qualifiers for all the HITS Championship classes, HITS offers something special for everyone, every week. HCD

From the A spectator’s guide to show jumping By HITS Staff
I
t’s beautiful, it’s impressive and it’s exciting, but if while sitting in the grandstand at a horse show, you find yourself thinking these things, you’re not alone. Have no fear, however, HITS has put together a guide to horse shows for the avid or perhaps not-so-avid spectator. The following will give you an insider’s look at the horse show world and how to navigate all that you will see during HITS Ocala Winter Circuit.
WHAT YOU’RE WATCHING AND HOW TO JUDGE IT: JUMPERS—Jumper classes, like the March 26
ESI PHOTO
Great American $1 Million Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for an error. A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part
of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a second that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner. HUNTERS—Hunter classes judge the horse. A hunter should have a long, low, ground-covering stride and jump the fences easily, smoothly and with consistent pace. Hunters are quiet, exhibit good manners both over fences and under saddle and jump courses that involve

Grandstand direct lines and straight-forward fences, usually designed with natural elements and colors. At the conclusion of over -fences classes, hunters are often asked to jog for soundness. They trot in a line in front of the judge before placings are made final. The judge will evaluate the horse’s conformation, health and overall gait both during the class and in the jog. At the end of class, a judge will assign a hunter and its rider a numerical score out of 100 based on how well they executed the course and how professional they looked doing it. Shiny boots, well-tailored clothes and a smartly groomed horse all count in the hunter ring. EQUITATION—Equitation classes judge the rider on their form, their guidance of the horse, effectiveness of their aids, position of legs, hands and upper body position, and the ability to perform certain tests with style and precision. The rider’s legs should be perpendicular to the ground and quiet with the heel down. Their hands should be supple and follow the movement of the horse’s head. The upper body
should be upright, but relaxed with a slight arch in the lower back. The rider’s head should be up and looking forward. Equitation classes are generally judged on the flat at the walk, trot and canter and over fences. Equitation riders, like hunter riders, are assigned a score out of 100 by a judge based on their performance. The highest score wins the blue. Learn these terms and you will be on the way to impressing all your “horsey” friends STRIDE – the amount of ground a horse covers. At the canter, the average stride of a horse is 12 feet. The distances between fences of jumping courses are set accordingly. SCHOOLING – practice or training before competition. The riders practice in a schooling area and are not allowed to practice on the actual course. ORDER OF GO – the order in which the competitors compete over the set course. COURSE WALK – riders walk the course to measure the number of strides their horse will need between each jump.
FAULTS – numerical penalties assigned for downed rails, refusals or going over the time allowed. TIME ALLOWED – the time, determined by the course designer, that it should take a horse to navigate a jumper course. REFUSAL – a horse that stops in front of a fence and will not attempt to jump it. CLEAN/CLEAR – when the horse and rider complete all jumps on the course without a single jumping or time fault. JUMP-OFF – the riders who have a clean round compete in a timed jump-off over a shortened course to determine the winner of the class. TACK – the equipment used on the horse including the saddle and the bridle. COMBINATION – two or more jumps set close together and designed to be jump with fewer strides in between and judged as one element. LIVERPOOL – a fence set over water or a ditch filled with water that horse and rider must clear. GREEN – a horse, usually young, with little experience. HCD

he Appleton Museum of Art is offering a Trips & Tours program to Tampa Bay Downs on February 22. The annual popular trip includes being hosted in a private party suite on the finish line, a buffet lunch, a private mutual teller for wagering, outdoor seating, and a cash bar. There will also be an Appleton Museum Race and an opportunity for some to be in the winner’s circle. The cost is $65 for Appleton members and $75 for non-members. Contact Bonnie Janssen at 352-291-4456 or janssenb@cf.edu or stop by Appleton Museum of Art, 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd. The Appleton Museum of Art, founded in 1982, was a gift from Arthur I. Appleton to the Ocala community. Appleton and his wife, the former Martha O’Driscoll, bought land in the Ocala area during the mid-1970s and established Bridlewood Farm, a top thoroughbred breeding and training facility in Florida and nationally. Appleton realized the area was the perfect setting for a museum that would allow him to share with the public his vast art collections. Construction of the Appleton Museum of Art began on 44 acres of forested land on East Silver Springs Boulevard in 1984. The City of Ocala donated the 44acre site for the home of the museum. It was completed and presented to the City of Ocala by Appleton in 1986, and opened to the public in 1987. In 1996, the 22,000 square foot Edith-Marie Appleton Wing was added to the building by his sister. Appleton passed away on
Jan. 15, 2008, at the age of 92. Originally built to display and preserve Appleton’s extensive art collection, the Appleton Museum today is one of the South’s premier art museums and the leading cultural institution in Marion County. Since opening day, the museum’s mission has been to consistently exhibit works of fine art and artifacts for the public and provide educational programming for visitors like the Tampa trip to the races. Since 2004, governance of the museum has been through the College of Central Florida and the CF Foundation. HCD

he veterinarians at Peterson & Smith Equine Hospital have been healing horses in Marion County, Fla., since Drs. John Peterson and Johnny Mac Smith combined practices in 1981. The success of their collaboration and the testimony of their clients are testimony that the hospital’s mission statement – “To be one of the leading veterinary practices on an international level by providing state-of-theart diagnostics, surgery and medicine for our patients and fostering a relationship of professionalism and integrity with our clients” – is a goal that was achieved some time ago. ponentially, but he says that, despite its continued expansion, it hasn’t gotten so big that it has forgotten what made it a success. Client education and the exchange of information from researcher to veterinarian to horsemen are the keys not only to Peterson & Smith’s success, but are also the keys to maximizing preventive maintenance, to proceeding confidently with treatment and to thoroughly enjoying the experience for horse ownership. “We take a multi-level approach toward the education of owners and horsemen,” he said. “Like a lot of practices, we have seminars, picking topics that might be hot at the time,

In addition to one-on-one relationships, Peterson & Smith Peterson & Smith sponsors and provides a strong presence on “The Horse Talk Show,” a weekly radio broadcast aired Saturday mornings at 8 on 100.1 FM radio and online at floridasportstalk.fm, and also has a vibrant social-networking presence, particularly on Facebook. began their collaboration 36 years ago. Independently in practice for several years before getting together, they used Peterson’s farm as their base after joining forces. One of their first steps was to hire freshly graduated Dr. Phil Matthews that year, and his addition was soon followed by that of Drs. Kevin Hahn and Donnie Slone. All three would become partners and Matthews is currently the practice’s president. Southwest 60th Avenue in Ocala was just a one-lane road, and the nextdoor Post Office wasn’t on the drafting board, when Peterson & Smith operations were moved there three years later. With the move, business boomed, to the point where now, on average, there are 26 veterinarians on staff, seven of whom are partners. Originally, the facility consisted of a modest office building, with living quarters; a row of stalls, a lab and a barn. A medicine barn, sports-medi-

cine barn and an isolation barn were added, and a satellite facility, Peterson & Smith’s Equine Reproduction Center, was established in Summerfield in 1999. The office building at the Ocala base was enlarged in 2007 and two years later another satellite operation, the Buffalo Ridge Animal Hospital, which caters to small animals, was created in The Villages, about a halfhour drive from the main facility. Both operations feature emergency clinics, 24/7. Peterson & Smith’s veterinary staff serves as a conduit for educating future veterinarians as well as its clients. It leapt into the role of a teaching hospital in 1986 when it began its internship and surgical-residency programs. Since then it has always had at least one intern, and has had up to eight at one time. The institutional memory is very much still in evidence: Peterson still practices locally while Smith, ironically, developed an allergy to horses and

moved to Lexington, Ky., where he is a consultant with the Research Advisory Committee of the Grayson Foundation. And Matthews – who in partnership with his wife, Karen, bred the sensational half-million-dollar earning thoroughbred Mr. Jordan – remains in practice while spending much of his time at the reproduction facility in Summerfield. Peterson & Smith’s full-service ambulatory service, the largest in the Southeastern U.S., extends about 50 miles outward from Ocala, and its two surgery suites in Ocala handle a highvolume caseload, serving all breeds of horses while performing a wide range of orthopaedic and soft-tissue procedures. Lynch says the key to Peterson & Smith’s growth and success can be traced to the experience and talent of its veterinary staff; the compassion and dedication of both medical and nonmedical staff, and the hospital’s access
to the most advanced technology available. All while never forgetting the relationship to horse owners. “We know the importance of adapting to the needs of our patients and clients. We all love horses, we’re in it for the horses,” he said. “That’s what ties us all together.” HCD

ond that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner.
The following is a brief summary of Show HITS will host the $200,000 Jumping, the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup and Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup opportunities for community participation.

SHOWJUMPING 101: Jumper classes, like a Nations Cup Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for a jumping error. This is how it breaks down: A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a sec-

rotecting the health of your horse and other horses at HITS Ocala Winter Circuit is of the utmost importance to HITS. To that end HITS has implemented required biosecurity measures to decrease the risk of introduction and/or spread of contagious or infectious disease at its shows. Horses must arrive only between the hours of 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Off-hours arrival must obtain permission from show management by calling 352-620-2275 24 hours prior to arrival.
UPON ARRIVAL TO POST TIME FARM, ALL HORSES MUST HAVE:
Signed by the owner/agent/trainer verifying that the horse has been healthy with no sign of infectious disease and has not had a fever above 102°F within 72 hours of arrival. An Event Participation Declaration Form is available in this prize list and at HitsShows.com. A new Event Participation Declaration Form must be filed each time the horse enters the property. Horses stabled off the property that “ship-in” on a regular basis must comply with this requirement as well as additional requirements noted on the following pages. Visit HitsShows.com for further details.
PROOF OF VACCINATION A signed statement from the attending veterinarian that the horse has been vaccinated within six months of each show for equine influenza, EHV1 and EHV4. If a vaccination will expire during one of the shows, the horse must receive its new vaccination prior to being issued a competition number for that show.

USHJA announces dates for championships LEXINGTON, KY. –
T
he United States Hunter Jumper Association has announced the dates for 2017 Zone Horse of the Year, Stirrup Cup and Equitation championships, which provide members with an exciting opportunity to earn Championship Points toward zone year-end HOTY and Stirrup Cup awards. More than 30 Zone HOTY, Stirrup Cup and Zone Equitation championships will be held across the country, and the championships are open to all zone competitors who meet the minimum requirements, except the HOTY Championships in Zones 2 and 3, which have specific qualifying criteria. Competitors may access relevant qualifying criteria (Zones 2 and 3), minimum requirements to participate, specifications and other information about their championships by visiting www.ushja.org/zones, clicking on their zone and selecting championships. All Zone HOTY and Stirrup Cup require that the horse owner, rider and trainer are Active/Competing USHJA and USEF members before the first day of competition and require that horses must have USEF annual

or life membership and USHJA horse registration. The Zone HOTY and Stirrup Cup championships are opportunities for members competing for yearend awards in these programs to earn Championship Points, which contribute to their overall year-end standings. In Hunter and Jumper sections the owner or recorded leasee of the horse must reside within the Zone in order to participate in the Zone Championship and receive Championship Points. In Equitation sections the rider must reside within the Zone in order to participate in the Zone Championship and receive Championship Points. Please note equitation classes may be added to a Hunter or Jumper HOTY Championship at the discretion of the competition manager. The USHJA Zone Horse of Year Program is a point-based awards program to recognize the accomplishments of USHJA members. Zone HOTY points are earned at Premier (AA), National (A), Regional I (B) and Regional II (C) rated competitions. Points accumulated in a state or country contiguous to an owner’s home zone may be counted toward Horse of the Year points at both the zone and national level. If a contiguous state or country offers a section that is not offered by the owner’s home zone, points will not count at the zone level, but they will be counted towards USEF national HOTY awards. The USHJA Stirrup Cup Awards are an additional and unique awards program that you are automatically enrolled in by being a member of USHJA and competing in Regional I (B) and Regional II (C) rated competitions. Only points earned at Regional I (B) and Regional II (C) USEF-licensed competitions, and points earned at Jumper Level 1 or 2 rated competitions will count for this award program. Stirrup Cup points may only be accumulated in an owner’s home zone; points accumulated in a contiguous state or country never count toward Stirrup Cup awards. A horse must compete in at least three Regional I or II competitions during the current competition year for their points to count. Both the USHJA Zone HOTY and Stirrup Cup Awards programs are separate programs from the USEF Horse of the Year Program. HCD

Farm from Feb. 14-19. Riders from the event will be on hand as visitors cheer for these top athletes from around the world that descend on Ocala to compete in the prestigious Nations Cup. The Nations Cup jumping series is equestrian sport’s oldest and most prestigious team challenge, with national teams from around the globe competing for one of the most coveted prizes in this discipline that is an Olympic event. Horse breeds expected to be in the parade around the square include andalusian, appaloosa, arabian, Belgian, British riding pony, clydesdale, drum horse, Florida Cracker horse, foxtrotter, friesian, gypsy vanner, hackney, haflinger, lippizan, miniature, morgan, mule, Norwegian fjord, paint horse, paso fino, percheron, Peruvian paso, quarter horse, shire, Tennessee walking horse, thoroughbred, warmblood and a Welsh pony. Mark Shuffitt of the UF/IFAS Extension Marion County will be on hand doing a live video on social media sharing insight from owners of the variety of breeds and event goers. The idea of Jump Downtown came to HITS founder Tom Struzzieri at a Chamber and Economic Partnership breakfast a few months ago. The idea tied in community leaders from the Ocala and Marion County local government, councils, and charity groups with the goal to showcase equines and welcome riders. “With loyal support from Marion County and the City of Ocala, HITS will once again welcome show jumping’s biggest players to the Horse Capital of the World to exemplify our continued commitment to growing the sport for exhibitors and spectators alike,” Struzzieri said. Diana Schwartz, Director of Ocala Main Street, is organizing the event as part of the Florida Main Street program, a preservation-based program aimed at revitalizing downtowns. Florida Main Street is administered under the state Division of Historical Preservation, and is also a nationally designated program of The National Main Street Center, established by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Ocala Main Street was formed last year by a group of Marion County business leaders with assistance from the CEP to get it off the ground. The board includes Rusty Branson, Larry Bush, Angie Lewis, Bryce Peek, Tim Rogers and Ted Schatt. The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association trademarked the moniker “Ocala/Marion County Horse Capital of the World,” creating a
now high-profile signature brand for the county. The name came about after it was discovered by a national survey of equines that the county had more horse and ponies than any other in the United States. With the wide variety of breeds; top equestrians from around the world; the huge array of equestrian events, and the large number disciplines and numerous high profile equine venues and providers, Ocala truly is horse capital.
With loyal support from Marion County and the “City of Ocala, HITS will once again welcome show
jumping’s biggest players to the Horse Capital of the World to exemplify our continued commitment to growing the sport for exhibitors and spectators alike.

The area plays host to a number of high-profile equine events annually including HITS, the Live Oak Invitational Competitions, the Ocala Breeders’ thoroughbred sales, equine events at the Florida Horse Park and the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion among others throughout the county. It is also the second-largest breeding region in the North America for thoroughbreds and one of the top worldwide. In addition to many Kentucky Derby runners being trained in the county, the most-recent Triple Crown winner, American Pharoah, was trained in the region and carries Marion County thoroughbred bloodlines. Cook and Tembla powered down a :44.211-second Coachella Desert Circuit, riders descended on the Grand Prix Ring at HITS Desert Horse Park round with all of the rails up for the eventual fourth for a shot at the lion’s share of the prize in the $75,000 place. Rounding out the top five was Jamie Barge and Purina Animal Nutrition Grand Prix. The week preludes the upcoming Longines FEI World Luebbo, owned by Kylie Co. Last year, Barge and Luebbo placed second in the Cup Jumping Thermal CSIW3 on Saturday at 5 p.m. Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Thermal at HITS Ocala time. Thirty-seven equestrians turned out to compete in Desert Horse Park. Will they return to the top of the pack Sunday’s Grand Prix, but the victor would be Chris Pratt again this weekend? Only time will tell. HCD and his ride, Concorde, owned by The Epic Group. Nine advanced clear over the first-round course designed by Olaf Petersen Jr. of Germany, and six would go clear in the jump-off in contingency for the win. Pratt was the fifth in the order to challenge the abbreviated course, where he and Concorde would stop the clock in :41.702, just hundredths of a second ahead of secondplace Eric Navet. Navet and Catypso, owned by Signe Ostby, were the first to test the jump-off course, laying down a solid, fault-free round in :41.787, which would hold up until Pratt came in.
