Welcome
to HITS Ocala 2017 A brief overview of the 2017 HITS Ocala Winter Circuit A
ll 10 weeks of the current HITS stand in Ocala have featured USEF National- or Premier-rated Hunters. All shows count toward the Horseware Ireland Grand Circuit Awards, Marshall & Sterling Insurance League, and the HITS Championship in Saugerties, N.Y. this September. The Great American $1 Million Grand Prix returns to the stage in the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium on Sunday, March 26. The second jewel of the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping debuted with great success in 2014 and we look forward to treating exhibitors and spectators alike to another tremendous event! The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup CSIO4*, an official World Ranking Competition, will take place Friday, Feb. 17 during the Ocala Winter Festival. Over $400,000 was offered in the FEI Jumper division throughout the week, including $200,000 in the Nations Cup and $150,000 in the Grand Prix. The Overlook VIP Club offered a unique hospitality experience including world-class culinary presentation, complete with complimentary beer and wine service. The Ocala Horse Properties Stadium is the fulltime Grand Prix Ring. The stadium, located on HITS property just across 137th Avenue, opened to rave reviews three years ago. The former Grand Prix Ring is Jumper Ring 1 and provided a second Feature Jumper Ring for horses and riders moving up the ranks. The Overlook VIP Club will be at the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium for the entire circuit, serving breakfast and lunch each show day throughout the circuit. The former VIP area was replaced by a lovely cafĂŠ serving breakfast and lunch, with covered seating overlooking Jumper Ring 1 and the Main Hunter Ring. Footing in all the Hunter Rings and Hunter Schooling Areas has been redone to match the footing in the Main Hunter Ring. Follow the progress on our Facebook page. The safety and well-being of your horses, and peace of mind for you, is our top priority. Over the past year, HITS has been at the forefront of im-
plementing a standard Equine Health Protocol at all its shows. The Bio-Security Plan and Required Vaccination Protocol that HITS developed is being emulated across the country. Please be sure to review the requirements as printed in the prize list, and check HitsShows.com prior to your arrival to review the most up-to-date information.
With $3 million in prize money and qualifiers for all the HITS Championship classes, HITS offers something special for everyone, every week. HCD

From the A spectator’s guide to show jumping By HITS Staff
I
t’s beautiful, it’s impressive and it’s exciting, but if while sitting in the grandstand at a horse show, you find yourself thinking these things, you’re not alone. Have no fear, however, HITS has put together a guide to horse shows for the avid or perhaps not-so-avid spectator. The following will give you an insider’s look at the horse show world and how to navigate all that you will see during HITS Ocala Winter Circuit.
WHAT YOU’RE WATCHING AND HOW TO JUDGE IT: JUMPERS—Jumper classes, like the March 26
ESI PHOTO
Great American $1 Million Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for an error. A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part
of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a second that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner. HUNTERS—Hunter classes judge the horse. A hunter should have a long, low, ground-covering stride and jump the fences easily, smoothly and with consistent pace. Hunters are quiet, exhibit good manners both over fences and under saddle and jump courses that involve

Grandstand direct lines and straight-forward fences, usually designed with natural elements and colors. At the conclusion of over -fences classes, hunters are often asked to jog for soundness. They trot in a line in front of the judge before placings are made final. The judge will evaluate the horse’s conformation, health and overall gait both during the class and in the jog. At the end of class, a judge will assign a hunter and its rider a numerical score out of 100 based on how well they executed the course and how professional they looked doing it. Shiny boots, well-tailored clothes and a smartly groomed horse all count in the hunter ring. EQUITATION—Equitation classes judge the rider on their form, their guidance of the horse, effectiveness of their aids, position of legs, hands and upper body position, and the ability to perform certain tests with style and precision. The rider’s legs should be perpendicular to the ground and quiet with the heel down. Their hands should be supple and follow the movement of the horse’s head. The upper body
should be upright, but relaxed with a slight arch in the lower back. The rider’s head should be up and looking forward. Equitation classes are generally judged on the flat at the walk, trot and canter and over fences. Equitation riders, like hunter riders, are assigned a score out of 100 by a judge based on their performance. The highest score wins the blue. Learn these terms and you will be on the way to impressing all your “horsey” friends STRIDE – the amount of ground a horse covers. At the canter, the average stride of a horse is 12 feet. The distances between fences of jumping courses are set accordingly. SCHOOLING – practice or training before competition. The riders practice in a schooling area and are not allowed to practice on the actual course. ORDER OF GO – the order in which the competitors compete over the set course. COURSE WALK – riders walk the course to measure the number of strides their horse will need between each jump.
FAULTS – numerical penalties assigned for downed rails, refusals or going over the time allowed. TIME ALLOWED – the time, determined by the course designer, that it should take a horse to navigate a jumper course. REFUSAL – a horse that stops in front of a fence and will not attempt to jump it. CLEAN/CLEAR – when the horse and rider complete all jumps on the course without a single jumping or time fault. JUMP-OFF – the riders who have a clean round compete in a timed jump-off over a shortened course to determine the winner of the class. TACK – the equipment used on the horse including the saddle and the bridle. COMBINATION – two or more jumps set close together and designed to be jump with fewer strides in between and judged as one element. LIVERPOOL – a fence set over water or a ditch filled with water that horse and rider must clear. GREEN – a horse, usually young, with little experience. HCD

Grand Prix Redux for Lapierre, Cesha M W
eek IV at HITS Post Time Farm included plenty of excitement and riders and horses of all ages, levels and states gathered to compete. The week culminated with the $50,000 HITS Grand Prix on Sunday, Feb. 12.
Rounding out the top five was Mattias Tromp piloting Avon, owned by Swede Ventures. They, too, would be foiled by a single rail to finish the course with four faults in :40.497.
HITS GRAND PRIX
$50,000 HITS Grand Prix
Canadian Isabelle Lapierre took home the title riding her own mare, Cesha M. Interestingly, Lapierre and Cesha M took home the exact same title last year during Week IV of the Ocala Winter Circuit: first place in the $50,000 HITS Grand Prix. Lapierre and Cesha M returned to stake claim to their title in a lightning-fast jump-off round in which they took the top spot on the leaderboard with a three-second lead. The pair were third in the order of the ninehorse jump-off, and their fault-free time of :40.763 held up through the rest of the field. Many of the contenders in Sunday’s Grand Prix have been competing against each other for the entirety of the Ocala Winter Circuit, and the order of go was stacked with veteran Grand Prix riders with some fresh faces in the top 12 as well. Scott Keach was the seventh in the order to challenge the abbreviated course piloting Chicco W, owned by Edith Rameika. The Australian and his mount sped through the course, stopping the clock in :43.065 for second place. The last contestant in the jump-off was Kim Farlinger aboard Caprice Van De Brouwershoeve, owned by Kim Farlinger Stables, Ltd. They chased Lapierre’s leading time and zoomed through the course, taking each fence by storm and leaving the rails up. They finished in :43.074, only one-hundredth of a second behind Keach’s round, settling them into third place. Devin Ryan took home fourth place with Cooper as the quickest four-fault jump-off round in :39.122.

16 Horse Capital Digest • February 17, 2017
“I’m just so incredibly lucky to be associated with him,” said Bass. “I was looking for an experienced Derby horse, and then I got the call [about him]... I’m so fortunate.” On Saturday, the USHJA World Championship Hunter Rider Program will recognize his tremendous achievements and talent with the title of 2016 WCHR Hunter of the Year, the recipient of the Peter Wetherill Cup, during the $100,000 WCHR Peter Wetherill Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular. Under the training of David Belford and ridden by Christopher Payne, Truman has proved Bass’ intuition right over the five years Bass and Maypine Farm have owned him. Now 9 years old, Truman was imported at 5 years old and moved up through the Green Hunter 3’ and 3’3” (formerly Pre-Green Hunter) and Green Hunter 3’6” and 3’9” (formerly First- and Second-Year Green Hunter), winning numerous Champions and Reserve Champions. Remarkably, in his career thus far, he has won every under saddle class with the exception of two classes. “Truman exemplifies what a hunter should be,” said Caroline Weeden, chair of the WCHR Task Force, the group responsible for selecting the Peter Wetherill Cup winner each year. “He’s beautiful across the ground; he jumps beautifully. He is just an exceptional horse. Truman took a short break in 2015 while his rider, Christopher Payne, was treated for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Payne’s incredible comeback was noted when he and Truman captured third place in the 2016 $100,000 WCHR Peter Wetherill Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular shortly after Payne was able to return to the irons. During that class, Truman was also awarded the Charlie Weaver Memorial Award for the highest-scoring Conformation Hunter in Round 1 with 92.16; the Mark Gregory Memorial Award, established by Susie Humes, as the best-conditioned horse in Round 1; and the Shapley’s Best Turned Out Award. The pair’s success continued in 2016 in the Second-Year Green Hunter section, including WEF Circuit Champion, Champion at the Devon Horse Show, Reserve Champion at the Capital Challenge Horse Show and Reserve Champion at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show. He is currently competing in the High Performance Conformation Hunter (formerly Regular Conformation Hunter). “It’s just amazing,” said Bass of Truman being named the 2016 WCHR Hunter of the Year. “I’m just thrilled for him. Truman is the horse of a lifetime; he has all the parts, and he’s just the most charming horse in the world. He doesn’t have a mean bone in his body.” HCD
Continuing Its Climb
COLUMBUS, OHIO –
C
elebrating its 15th anniversary, the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA), as in every past year, has set a record for membership.
This season, membership exceeds 13,500. In 2002, the IEA started with 175 riders on 13 teams. While the increased membership this season has come from across the United States, a significant number of new members have come from Illinois, Colorado, Texas and Arizona. The most exciting addition to the membership this year is the emergence of five new teams in Washington State, mobilizing a previously inactive area of the country for the IEA. “The membership that has emerged from Washington State represents an important milestone for the IEA,” said Jennifer Eaton, IEA Membership Coordinator. “The IEA hopes this new development will result in the organic growth of teams that span the West Coast, from Seattle to San Diego.”
The IEA is now the largest youth equestrian organization in the country, and the largest feeder organization to collegiate equestrian programs. Membership rates are $60 per individual rider for the season; most importantly, there is no need for any rider to own a horse to participate in the IEA. Founded in 2002, the non-profit (501.c.3) IEA was organized to promote and improve the quality of equestrian competition and instruction available to middle and secondary school students and is open to public and private schools and barn teams. In addition, the new Horsemanship Education Program is available to all non-riders in grades 4-12. The IEA’s purpose is to set minimum standards for competition, provide information concerning the creation and development of school associated equestrian sport programs, to generally promote the common interests of safe riding instruction and competition and education on matters related to equestrian competition at the middle and secondary school levels. For more information, check out the IEA website at www.rideiea.org. HCD

Prize $15,000 As 12 returned for the second round, judges $11,000 awarded a base score, Option Bonus Score and a $6,500 Handy Bonus Score, assessing the handiness of $4,000 the round. $3,000 Kristy Herrera and Miss Lucy, owned by $2,500 Helen Lenahan, finished the first round on top $2,000 with a score of 185.5, and they settle for sixth $1,500 place with a second-round score of 169 for an $1,500 overall total of 354.5. $1,000 Griffith entered second in the order with fifth$1,000 place ride Charisma. they received the highest total of the second round to boost them up in the standings with a 190.5. With their first-round score, 165, added to the mix gave them an overall total of 355.5. Sixth in the order to return, Holloway and Any Given Sunday were meticulous. Coming back seventh after the first round, they opted for three height options and received a combined total of 13 Handy Bonus Points. It was quite the comeback, but not enough to garner the lead. A first-round score of 171.5 combined with a second-round score of 197 totaled 368.5 which would give them the red ribbon. Continued on page 21

During the five-day regional training sessions, riders have the opportunity to work with top riding clinicians and stable managers. Riders are instructed on flatwork, gymnastics, related distances and course work, as well as an intensive stable-management curriculum that incorporates proper care and grooming, horsemanship skills and barn management. From those who participate in the sessions, 16 riders and a select number of stable managers will be selected to attend the national training session based on their riding and stable-management skills, written test results and potential shown during their regional session. The national session will be led by Olympian Peter Wylde and stable manager Anne Thornbury at the George M. Humphrey Equestrian Center at Lake Erie College Nov. 9-12. USHJA zones, in collaboration with the USHJA Foundation, have funding available for members to help offset the cost of attending an EAP regional or national session. OJC, RRP hosting:
Benefit will aid
Makeover program
BY TAMMY GANTT
T
he Ocala Jockey Club event venue and thoroughbred farm and the Retired Racehorse Project are hosting a BBQ on Feb. 21 from 6-9 p.m.
The evening includes dinner, drinks and a brief presentation from Steuart Pittman, Pavla Nygaard and others on why the Retired Racehorse Project is partnering with the United States Eventing Association on its new Young Event Horse Trainer Certification Program and how it impacts the RRP’s Thoroughbred Makeover program. The connection of retired racehorses to the eventing world is a natural and as Nygaard notes USEA is geared to young eventing horses, making the connection to racehorses coming off the track a good one. She believes sharing that greater knowledge and cooperation from the eventing and racing world is beneficial to both sports. The event encourages horse sport fans to join thoroughbred racing and three-day eventing people who share a passion for the thoroughbred horse. The Retired Racehorse Project exists to facilitate placement of thoroughbred ex-racehorses in second careers by increasing demand for them in equestrian sports and serving the farms, trainers, and organizations that transition them. Founded in 2010, RRP has inspired thousands to choose an off the track thoroughbred (OTTB). RRP said the popularity and value of OTTBs are on the rise, showcased by 135,000 Facebook fans, 94,000 website hits, constant press coverage and sell-out crowds at horse expos. For more information visit http://www.retiredracehorseproject.org. The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association has been a strong supporter of programs like RRP and the recent three-day eventing showcase held last fall at the OJC that showcased the versatility of racehorses after retirement.

Pittman is the president of the Retired Racehorse Project. He owns and operates Dodon Farm Training Center where he trains horses and riders for three-day eventing, dressage and jumping. He stands Salute the Truth, the only retired racehorse stallion in America to have evented at the advanced level. Steuart is a popular instructor and clinician both locally and nationally. He is also past president of the Maryland Horse Council and has been actively involved in efforts to revitalize Maryland thoroughbred racing. Nygaard is an RRP board member. Pavla and her husband Erik own the Ocala Jockey Club farm in Reddick, near Ocala, itself sporting a rich thoroughbred history. The couple added the three-day eventing competition facilities to the farm in 2016. They also own Thor-Bred Stables LLC, a breeding and racehorse ownership entity. Pavla admired horses ever since she can remember, but got her first chance to be around them when she bought a just-retired 4-year-old OTTB filly at a local cowboy auction in Vancouver, Canada. That mare is now 23 years old and still in Pavla’s care, along with another 10-year-old gelding formerly raced by Thor-Bred Stables. The Nygaards and the Ocala Jockey Club were profiled in the November issue of The Florida Horse, which is available online at www.ftboa.com, under The Florida Horse icon at the bottom of the page, then select November issue, page 72. return to contest the jump-off course. The jump-off consisted of eight fences, and was winding and technical, including a bending line to an oxer that caught up a few of the challengers, but Bond and Chela LS remained resilient. “I don’t feel as though I’m really there yet after my break [having a child] to really lay it down in a jumpoff,” said Bond. “My plan was really just to put it a clear ride and go decently fast. Everything has been a building road, so I’m getting my feet wet again. I definitely feel lucky to walk home with this win.” Following Bond was Clarke riding Balu U. After a second-place finish in the $36,500 Desert Welcome Stake to begin the event on Feb. 9, Clarke returned to the Grand Prix Ring to once again capture a top 5 finish, this time in third place. Clarke and Balu U, owned by Georgy MaskreySegesman, powered through the course, ultimately picking up eight faults in :40.10. “I am really glad to have a place to show in California that is not flooded out right now. The weather is great, and it’s why we show here [at HITS Coachella] at 32 Horse Capital Digest • February 17, 2017
this time of year,” said Clarke. “As far as my horse, Balu U, he’s a great horse. I wanted to work on his jump-off pace coming back in. I’ve only recently started going quick with him, and only shown in a few 1.60 classes. I try to focus more on the quality of the jump-off as opposed to the end result.” Next to challenge the abbreviated course was American Karl Cook, who rode Tembla, owned by Signe Ostby, to an eight-fault ride in :41.05. They looked to go clear until a mid-course vertical and the final fence foiled their shot at the lead. They would settle for fourth, but would walk away with a qualifying ticket to the FEI World Cup Finals. The final contestant was Audrey Coulter and Alex, owned by Copernicus Stables. They took each fence by storm until a difficult take-off distance cost them a rail. They would finish the course strong in :45.29. “My horse, Alex, is amazing and so dependable,” said Coulter. “I can bring him anywhere and he always tries his heart out and wants to win. He really tried out there in today’s class and I’m very lucky to have a horse like him.” HCD

Strategy pays for T
he Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Thermal kicked off at HITS Desert Horse Park with the $36,500 Desert Welcome Stake CSI3*-W class on Feb. 9. As the final stop on the West Coast to qualify for the FEI World Cup Finals in Omaha, Neb., in April, each rider was hunting for points. This class belonged to young Canadian equestrian Ali Ramsay of Victoria, British Columbia. Ramsay soared her way to the win aboard her partner Hermelien VD Hooghoeve, a striking and powerful bay mare. Going second in the order of a four-horse jumpoff, Ramsay and her mount laid down a cool, clear round to take home the title. Lane Clarke of Laguna Nigel, Calif., challenged the abbreviated course first riding Balu U, owned by Georgy Maskrey-Segesman. They came in on the right lead and flew straight to the first fence, an oxer mid-ring. They clocked in clear in :44.05 to set the tone for the remaining three challengers. Ramsay came next, opting to begin the course on the left lead instead of the right. The course was technical and winding, putting riders and horses’ skill to the test. “I planned to go in on the left lead, my horse goes better if I’m turning into the first jump, and I have the option to come on the opposite lead so I can angle the
fence,” said Ramsay of her jump-off plan. “My horse is amazing, I’ve had her for two and half years now. She jumps better and better every time we compete … I don’t know how I got so lucky.” Following Ramsay in the jump-off was Harley Brown of Portola Valley, Calif., piloting Apex, owned by Emma Catherine Reichow. They started off on a quick pace and conquered each fence until the fourth fence on course, the A element of the combination, tripped them up. They finished the course with four faults in :44.50 for fourth place. The final rider to contest the abbreviated course was Austrian Peter Petschenig riding Colour Your Life. An unfortunate rail at the first fence sealed the victory for Ramsay, but there was still an opportunity to shave off Brown’s time, and the third-place prize was still within Petschenig’s grasp. Petschenig and his mount flew through the course, kicking their pace up a notch on the long gallop from the mid-course combination to the third-to-last fence on course. They galloped home and crossed the timers in :44.35, a few tenths of a second ahead of Brown to secure third-place. Daniel Pedraza of Mexico narrowly missed the jump-off due to one time fault. He would take home fifth place riding Arc De Triomphe. HCD

The round would ultimately land them with the fifth-place prize. Porter entered with Milano as the seventh pair in the jump-off order, and they put the pedal to the metal to put down the quickest round that would hold up for the remainder of the class, a clear trip in a lightning-fast :33.21. “We’re taking it one day at a time with Milano,” said Porter. “He’s very talented but we are still learning more about him and what he is capable of at this level. He has certainly performed very well this week and we’re excited to see what’s to come.”
