Welcome

to HITS Ocala 2017 A brief overview of the 2017 HITS Ocala Winter Circuit A

ll 10 weeks of the current HITS stand in Ocala have featured USEF National- or Premier-rated Hunters. All shows count toward the Horseware Ireland Grand Circuit Awards, Marshall & Sterling Insurance League, and the HITS Championship in Saugerties, N.Y. this September. The Great American $1 Million Grand Prix returns to the stage in the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium on Sunday, March 26. The second jewel of the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping debuted with great success in 2014 and we look forward to treating exhibitors and spectators alike to another tremendous event! The Ocala Horse Properties Stadium is the fulltime Grand Prix Ring. The stadium, located on HITS property just across 137th Avenue, opened to rave reviews three years ago. The former Grand Prix Ring is Jumper Ring 1 and provided a second Feature Jumper Ring for horses and riders moving up the ranks. The Overlook VIP Club will be at the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium for the entire circuit, serving breakfast and lunch each show day throughout the circuit. The former VIP area was replaced by a lovely cafĂŠ serving breakfast and lunch, with covered seating overlooking Jumper Ring 1 and the Main Hunter Ring. Footing in all the Hunter Rings and Hunter Schooling Areas has been redone to match the footing in the Main Hunter Ring. Follow the progress on our Facebook page. The safety and well-being of your horses, and peace of mind for you, is our top priority. Over the past year, HITS has been at the forefront of implementing a standard Equine Health Protocol at all its shows. The Bio-Security Plan and Required Vaccination Protocol that HITS developed is being emulated across the country. Please be sure to review the requirements as printed in the prize list, and check HitsShows.com prior to your arrival to review the most up-to-date information.

With $3 million in prize money and qualifiers for all the HITS Championship classes, HITS offers something special for everyone, every week. HCD

From the A spectator’s guide to show jumping By HITS Staff

I

t’s beautiful, it’s impressive and it’s exciting, but if while sitting in the grandstand at a horse show, you find yourself thinking these things, you’re not alone. Have no fear, however, HITS has put together a guide to horse shows for the avid or perhaps not-so-avid spectator. The following will give you an insider’s look at the horse show world and how to navigate all that you will see during HITS Ocala Winter Circuit.

WHAT YOU’RE WATCHING AND HOW TO JUDGE IT: JUMPERS—Jumper classes, like the March 26

ESI PHOTO

Great American $1 Million Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for an error. A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part

of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a second that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner. HUNTERS—Hunter classes judge the horse. A hunter should have a long, low, ground-covering stride and jump the fences easily, smoothly and with consistent pace. Hunters are quiet, exhibit good manners both over fences and under saddle and jump courses that involve

Grandstand direct lines and straight-forward fences, usually designed with natural elements and colors. At the conclusion of over -fences classes, hunters are often asked to jog for soundness. They trot in a line in front of the judge before placings are made final. The judge will evaluate the horse’s conformation, health and overall gait both during the class and in the jog. At the end of class, a judge will assign a hunter and its rider a numerical score out of 100 based on how well they executed the course and how professional they looked doing it. Shiny boots, well-tailored clothes and a smartly groomed horse all count in the hunter ring. EQUITATION—Equitation classes judge the rider on their form, their guidance of the horse, effectiveness of their aids, position of legs, hands and upper body position, and the ability to perform certain tests with style and precision. The rider’s legs should be perpendicular to the ground and quiet with the heel down. Their hands should be supple and follow the movement of the horse’s head. The upper body

should be upright, but relaxed with a slight arch in the lower back. The rider’s head should be up and looking forward. Equitation classes are generally judged on the flat at the walk, trot and canter and over fences. Equitation riders, like hunter riders, are assigned a score out of 100 by a judge based on their performance. The highest score wins the blue. Learn these terms and you will be on the way to impressing all your “horsey” friends STRIDE – the amount of ground a horse covers. At the canter, the average stride of a horse is 12 feet. The distances between fences of jumping courses are set accordingly. SCHOOLING – practice or training before competition. The riders practice in a schooling area and are not allowed to practice on the actual course. ORDER OF GO – the order in which the competitors compete over the set course. COURSE WALK – riders walk the course to measure the number of strides their horse will need between each jump.

FAULTS – numerical penalties assigned for downed rails, refusals or going over the time allowed. TIME ALLOWED – the time, determined by the course designer, that it should take a horse to navigate a jumper course. REFUSAL – a horse that stops in front of a fence and will not attempt to jump it. CLEAN/CLEAR – when the horse and rider complete all jumps on the course without a single jumping or time fault. JUMP-OFF – the riders who have a clean round compete in a timed jump-off over a shortened course to determine the winner of the class. TACK – the equipment used on the horse including the saddle and the bridle. COMBINATION – two or more jumps set close together and designed to be jump with fewer strides in between and judged as one element. LIVERPOOL – a fence set over water or a ditch filled with water that horse and rider must clear. GREEN – a horse, usually young, with little experience. HCD

he sun beamed down on a beautiful day for team sport at HITS Ocala as Team Ireland swooped in to take home the title in the FEI Nations Cup Jumping Ocala competition on last Friday at HITS Post Time Farm. Ireland took home the Nations Cup title in 2015 and would do so again this year, leaving the Sunshine State with another FEI Nations Cup and its share of the $100,000 purse. One could say that the luck of the Irish was on the team’s side, but as Chef d’Equipe, Michael Blake, would go on to say in the post-victory press conference, “All of these men at the table are incredible riders; I selected this team early on because we need strategy and organization in our plan, and then we can do our best.” The Irish showed up to the Horse Capital of the World with a talented squad: Kevin Babington, Cian O’Connor, Shane Sweetnam and Richie Moloney. The teams, in addition to Ireland, consisted of the US, Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, El Salvador and Canada. The inaugural Parade of Nations put on by the City of Ocala and Marion County’s leaders and community, an event called “Jump Downtown” held in the Square two days before, welcomed the teams to Nations Cup Week. A packed grandstand and sold-out VIP tent, and a live webcast via FEI TV, looked on as the seven nations took their turns over a tworound competition course of 15 efforts set at 1.50 meters, designed by Marina Azevedo of Sao Paulo, Brazil. First of the 27 to show was Ireland’s Sweetnam riding Spy Coast Farm’s Chaqui Z. They were quick to set the tone for the afternoon with a clean round right out of the gate. They would complete the first round holding the lead, where it would remain in a wire-to-wire challenge against Team USA. “We came in with the intention to win,” said Sweetnam. “The Course Designer did a fantastic job. It was nice but tough in places it should be to jump at this level. We were quite confident coming back in but knew that we still had to put in our best effort to win.” “This win means a lot to us,” said teammate Richie Moloney. “We had a great time in Ocala and I’m very happy with the result.” The field of challengers began the course strong, picking up several clean rounds to start the first round, including Venezuelan Emanuel Andrade, Canadian Tiffany Foster, Mexican Arturo Parada Vallejo and American McLain Ward – all garnering clear rounds within the first six in the order. The course began to show the challenges as the class went on. “I’m happy with [the course] as it was my first Nations Cup,” said Azevedo. “Thank you to [HITS founder, president and CEO Tom Struzziri] for this opportunity to build for this group of riders. “It is challenging to build a course for this event with several highlevel riders and horses, and at the same time with riders and horses at a developing level. We have to think a little bit about where we can put in the height, and the spreads, and put in different distances. I’m glad to be here and I hope the riders enjoyed my course.” The energy was high as the first seven competitors took a second turn on Azevedo’s course. It appeared that many of the horses lost respect for the water jump, clearing all the fences but touching the tape in the water resulting in four faults. Ireland’s Babington elaborated on his effort to clear the water jump and a plan to tackle the triple combination, which caused many a rail in the second round for other team hopefuls. “I had the rail at the ‘C’ element of the combination. I got there a bit Continued on page 15

rushed in the first round,” he said. “In the second round, I wanted to get there slowing down and I thought it had come to plan but I ended up having ‘A’ down. Everything else worked to plan but when we returned, five horses had landed in the water, so I rode the water a little bit harder coming back in.” Team USA faced eight faults coming back into the second round. Ward jumped another clear round on the fiery Rothchild going fourth in the second-round order, followed by four-fault scores from teammates Lillie Keenan and Lauren Hough, respectively. The team sat at 16 total points, but still had Beezie Madden’s turn to bank on. Moloney was the penultimate rider for the Irish Team, going seventh in the order and scoring 12 faults. With the highest score dropped, Ireland sat at 12 total points. To seal the deal and walk away with the top spot on the podium, anchor rider O’Connor would need to fly through the course with all of the rails up. As fate would have it, the two final riders on course were Madden and O’Connor. The atmosphere was electric as Madden clocked in clear aboard Breitling LS, owned by Abigail Wexner, giving Team USA a final score of 16. The crowd was on the edge of their seats as O’Connor entered piloting Seringat, owned by Ronnoco Jump. They cruised through the course, taking caution to efficiently capture a clear round and seal the victory for their home country with a total of 12 faults. They touched down with no penalties to speak of and the crowd went wild as Irish flags of green, white and orange were waved in the air. As Seringat’s feet touched the earth, O’Connor would say that the feeling was incredible, and he was “counting the dollars. “You learn to deal with that extra pressure you have as the anchor rider, and I feel that I

perform better under the pressure,” said O’Connor. “When you see people work together to come and take this winning result, there’s nobody here that wouldn’t say that the biggest buzz there is to win a team event. The Nations Cups are great, they prepare riders to deliver results on the day when it counts.” Struzzieri added to the splendor of Ireland’s win, joking that it was his second-favorite result [as opposed to Team USA taking home the win]. “What great sport. It was terrific for show jumping and great for HITS,” said Struzzieri. “We’re looking ahead to the Great American Million, which is in the end of the month in March. It’s the grand finale to this circuit and we’re hoping to have some of these wonderful gentleman back with us. We’re always glad to have them and what they bring to the horse show.” Throughout the HITS Ocala CSIO4*, HITS will give nearly $300,000 in prize money in FEI Jumper classes. HCD

he curtain on the CSIO4* week at HITS Post Time Farm came to a thrilling close last Sunday with a jump-off battle in the $100,000 FEI City of Ocala Grand Prix. Hot off the win with Team Ireland in the previous Friday’s FEI Nations Cup, Cian O’Connor prevailed aboard Seringat, owned by Ronnoco Jump. “After winning the Nations Cup with the team and then com-

ing back to win again, it’s a great feeling. The course designer [Marina Azevedo of Sao Paulo, Brazil], designed both courses that I won on, so I love her courses,” said O’Connor with a laugh in the post-victory press conference. “I like the arena [in the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium], the ground is perfect. The jumps are different and impressive. Plus, there’s lots of room to work your horses in Ocala. It was no doubt a great week of competition.” With a little luck, and a lot of skill, O’Connor returned as the final contender in the three-horse jump-off to once again take the victory under pressure. Olympic gold-medalist and Team USA rider Beezie Madden took home the second-place prize and young talent Ali Wolff, Team USA’s alternate rider in the Nations Cup, was third. ers to garner double clear rounds for their respective countries in the FEI Nations Cup. “Having a great week of sport like this is pretty special, so my hats off to the HITS Team and to the riders sitting to my right [Cian and Beezie], two of the very best,” said HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri at the post-event press conference. “We’re lucky to have super sponsors, like The City of Ocala and Longines, and of course the support from Marion County.” Forty-four decorated riders tested the course of 13 jumping efforts set at 1.60 meters by Azevedo, but time would prove a factor early on in the class and the top three would prove themselves to advance to the jump-off. The jump-off was speedy, with O’Connor, Madden and Wolff all claiming clear rounds but separated by only tenths of a second. First to tour the abbreviated course was Madden riding Breitling LS, owned by Abigail Wexner. The pair had the first clear trip in the first round, slating them as the first trip into the jumpoff. “Going in first can be a difficult spot, especially when there are only three in the jump-off … there needs to be a little strategy. If there’s 12 in the jump-off, you just go for it and go fast,” said Madden. “I wanted to set my trip up taking a few risks to be fast so it would be hard to catch us. In hindsight, I could have done the seven [strides] from the wall to the oxer safely, that might have cost me those four-tenths of a second.” They finished their jump-off trip fault-free in :41.43, to the sound of the crowd’s cheers, setting the tone for Wolff to follow, then O’Connor. Wolff entered next with Casall, owned by Blacklick Bend Farm. They powered toward the finish as the clock wound down, the crowd on the edge of their seats. They would stop the clock with all Prize $ of the rails up but their time of :41.86 would $33,000 ultimately settle them in a well-fought third $20,000 place. $15,000 O’Connor was last to challenge, and just like $10,000 his exhilarating anchor ride for the Irish team in $6,000 the Nations Cup, he and Seringat were back to $4,500 $3,000 perform under the pressure. $2,500 There was one shot, and O’Connor laid it all $2,000 on the line with his chestnut gelding. he CSIO4* Week continued at HITS Post Time Farm last Saturday with the $41,200 HITS Jumper Classic.

Vale followed next, taking care to ensure the lead did not stay in Barrios’ hands for long. Vale and Quality on Top powered through the course, flying across the arena from the fifth fence on course to the combination, which required riders to gallop to the opposite end of the ring then change direction. “I got to watch McLain go, and I thought he was quite fast so I knew I had to be especially quick," said Vale. “There were a couple

Riders from several countries – the U.S., Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, El Salvador, Colombia and Ireland, winner of the previous day’s $100,000 FEI Nations Cup – took their turn over the course set by Marina Azevedo of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The trip would ultimately settle them in sixth place, with the remaining contenders, aside from Vale, all finishing within a few fractions of a seconds of each other. Barrios grabbed the next clear round of the eventual top five placings, going fourth in the jump-off order aboard Zara Leandra, owned by ZL Group. Cheers rang out from the Venezuelan team supporters as they watched them laid down a cool, clear round in :41.17. They’d ultimately take home the thirdplace prize.

he FEI Nations Cup Jumping CSIO4* week kicked off on Thursday, Feb. 16, with two featured FEI classes, the $41,200 Thursday Prix and the $5,000 Johnson Horse Transport Welcome Stake. Riders and horses from around the globe all converged at HITS Post Time Farm in Ocala to celebrate and compete in this very special week.

They laid down a brilliantly smooth round, nearly catching Holloway with their time of :39.78. They would settle for the red ribbon in second place when the class was finished. Devin Ryan was the second-to-last to challenge the jump-off course riding Cooper. guests. The evening included dinner, drinks and presentations from RRP President Steuart Pittman and RRP board member Pavla Nygaard on why RRP partnered with the United States Eventing Association on its new Young Event Horse Trainer certification program and how it will impact the RRP’s Thoroughbred Makeover program. A highlight of the event was Bill Turner, famed trainer of Triple Crown champion Seattle Slew. He shared stories that entertained guests throughout the evening. Famed jockey Rosie Napravnik was also a special guest at the event. Napravnik won the Kentucky Oaks in 2012 and 2014, The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2012 and the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in 2014. Her significant mounts include Untapable, Pants on Fire, Believe You Can, Termsofengagement, Mylute and Shanghai Bobby. The goal of the event was to highlight the connection thoroughbreds have as valuable athletes in a number of equine disciplines. RRP has the popularity and value of Off-the-track thoroughbreds on the rise. Retired thoroughbreds in Florida are being used across the state as hunter/jumpers, in dressage, polo, as police horses, eventers and as trail riding horses among other horse sports. The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association is a strong supporter of programs like RRP. For more information visit http://www.retiredracehorseproject.org HCD

The event drew 30 entries that qualified to compete after showing in the week’s Junior, AmateurOwner and Open Hunter sections. Course Designer Patrick Rodes set the courses for the two-round classic. Round 1 featured 10 jumping efforts and long gallops

The six-member judging panel sat in pairs around the arena. They were Rick Fancher and Tammy Provost; Jim Clapperton and Shane George, and Chris Wynne and Mary Lisa Leffler. For their victory Catch Me and Stewart, of Flemington, N.J., were presented the Dark Continent Perpetual Trophy, donated by Jim Greene, as well as the Let’s Dance Perpetual Trophy, donated by the late Gene Mische. “Everything is icing on the cake at this point,” said Becky Gochman. “I’m thrilled with his past performances, and I look forward to future performances.
