e are pleased to announce that HITS Ocala, Jan. 17 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; March 26, will be a 10-week USEF-rated circuit this year. All 10 weeks have been USEF National- or Premier-rated Hunters. All shows count toward the Horseware Ireland Grand Circuit Awards, Marshall & Sterling Insurance League, and the HITS Championship in Saugerties, N.Y. this September. The Great American $1 Million Grand Prix returns to the stage in the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium on Sunday, March 26. The second jewel of the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping debuted with great success in 2014 and we look forward to treating exhibitors and spectators alike to another tremendous event! The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup CSIO4*, an official World Ranking Competition, will take place Friday, Feb. 17 during the Ocala Winter Festival. Over $400,000 was offered in the FEI Jumper division throughout the week, including $200,000 in the Nations Cup and $150,000 in the Grand Prix. The Overlook VIP Club offered a unique hospitality experience including world-class culinary presentation, complete with complimentary beer and wine service. The Ocala Horse Properties Stadium is the fulltime Grand Prix Ring. The stadium, located on HITS property just across 137th Avenue, opened to rave reviews three years ago. The former Grand Prix Ring is Jumper Ring 1 and provided a second Feature Jumper Ring for horses and riders moving up the ranks. The Overlook VIP Club will be at the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium for the entire circuit, serving breakfast and lunch each show day throughout the circuit. The former VIP area was replaced by a lovely cafĂŠ serving breakfast and lunch, with covered seating overlooking Jumper Ring 1 and the Main Hunter Ring. From the A spectator’s guide to show jumping By HITS Staff

t’s beautiful, it’s impressive and it’s exciting, but if while sitting in the grandstand at a horse show, you find yourself thinking these things, you’re not alone. Have no fear, however, HITS has put together a guide to horse shows for the avid or perhaps not-so-avid spectator. The following will give you an insider’s look at the horse show world and how to navigate all that you will see during HITS Ocala Winter Circuit.

WHAT YOU’RE WATCHING AND HOW TO JUDGE IT: JUMPERS—Jumper classes, like the March 26

Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for an error. A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part

of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a second that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner. HUNTERS—Hunter classes judge the horse. A hunter should have a long, low, ground-covering stride and jump the fences easily, smoothly and with consistent pace. Hunters are quiet, exhibit good manners both over fences and under saddle and jump courses that involve

Grandstand COURSE WALK – riders walk the course to measure the number of strides their horse will need between each jump. FAULTS – numerical penalties assigned for downed rails, refusals or going over the time allowed. TIME ALLOWED – the time, determined by the course designer, that it should take a horse to navigate a jumper course. REFUSAL – a horse that stops in front of a fence and will not attempt to jump it. CLEAN/CLEAR – when the horse and rider complete all jumps on the course without a single jumping or time fault. JUMP-OFF – the riders who have a clean round compete in a timed jump-off over a shortened course to determine the winner of the class. TACK – the equipment used on the horse including the saddle and the bridle. COMBINATION – two or more jumps set close together and designed to be jump with fewer strides in between and judged as one element. LIVERPOOL – a fence set over water or a

ditch filled with water that horse and rider must clear. GREEN – a horse, usually young, with little experience. HCD

direct lines and straight-forward fences, usually designed with natural elements and colors. At the conclusion of over -fences classes, hunters are often asked to jog for soundness. They trot in a line in front of the judge before placings are made final. The judge will evaluate the horse’s conformation, health and overall gait both during the class and in the jog. At the end of class, a judge will assign a hunter and its rider a numerical score out of 100 based on how well they executed the course and how professional they looked doing it. Shiny boots, well-tailored clothes and a smartly groomed horse all count in the hunter ring. EQUITATION—Equitation classes judge the rider on their form, their guidance of the horse, effectiveness of their aids, position of legs, hands and upper body position, and the ability to perform certain tests with style and precision. The rider’s legs should be perpendicular to the ground and quiet with the heel down. Their hands should be supple and follow the movement of the horse’s head. The upper body should be upright, but relaxed with a slight arch in the lower back. The rider’s head should be up and looking forward. Equitation classes are generally judged on the flat at the walk, trot and canter and over fences. Equitation riders, like hunter riders, are assigned a score out of 100 by a judge based on their performance. The highest score wins the blue. Learn these terms and you will be on the way to impressing all your “horsey” friends STRIDE – the amount of ground a horse covers. At the canter, the average stride of a horse is 12 feet. The distances between fences of jumping courses are set accordingly. SCHOOLING – practice or training before competition. The riders practice in a schooling area and are not allowed to practice on the actual course. ORDER OF GO – the order in which the competitors compete over the set course.

Humble Beginning In Florida H ITS, Inc. is a special events management company primarily focused on producing hunter/jumper horse shows. Based in upstate New York in the village of Saugerties, HITS produced its first horse show circuit in Gainesville in 1982. Many consider Florida to be the heart of HITS shows, which were originally produced in Gainesville in the ‘80s and then moved to Ocala in the mid-‘90s to accommodate increasing numbers and the need for rings and stabling. Since then, HITS has grown into a nationwide company with world-class hunter-jumper circuits in California, Florida, Arizona, New York and Virginia. In 2002, HITS moved to Ocala’s Post Time Farm and created a show jumping haven. Boasting 450 lush acres, the show grounds welcome all levels and kinds, from short stirrup to Olympic athletes, national champion campaigners to local baby greens. HITS produces three of the richest grand prix in the world with the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix in Thermal, Calif., the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix in Ocala, and the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix in Saugerties – all forming the Triple Crown of Show Jumping. The Great American $1 Million Grand Prix in Ocala is planned for March 26 which is the second jewel of the Triple Crown of show jumping. This is a fitting connection in Florida, as the state is also the birthplace of the 1978 American Triple Crown winner in thoroughbred racing, the great champion Affirmed, and served as the early training grounds for 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. The Grand Prix welcomes international talent from all corners of the world. The HITS Championship also hosts the HITS Saugerties $250,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Prix, as well as the crown jewels of the hunter discipline with the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final and the Platinum Performance $250,000 Hunter Prix Final. In 2011, HITS Inc. expanded its event-management repertoire into endurance sports and HITS Endurance was born. Under the HITS Endurance umbrella, both HITS Triathlon Series and HITS Running Festivals present top-notch triathlon and running races throughout the U.S. The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup found a home at HITS Post Time Farm during Week V of HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. On Friday, Feb. 17, nine international teams will battle it out for global fame and their piece of a $200,000 purse. The key to HITS’ success is its strategy of producing a series of horse shows over continuous weeks, in desirable destinations, with first-class competition facilities and unmatched professional operations. Scholarship open Hamels offering $25G to winning USHJA member LEXINGTON, Ky. –

he USHJA Foundation is accepting applications to the USHJA Foundation Hamel Scholarship for Further Education. The foundation will award $25,000 to a USHJA member for use toward college, graduate, trade or professional school. “We are very excited to kick off this first year of the scholarship and encourage junior and adult USHJA members alike who are furthering their education to apply,” said Jennifer Burger, president of USHJA Foundation. “This opportunity wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of the Hamel Family, and we look forward to being able to support the advanced educational pursuits of a deserving USHJA member each year.” USHJA members who have been members for the past three consecutive years are eligible for the scholarship, and applicants must be accepted into a college, graduate, trade or professional school as a student and they should be ranked in the top 20% of their class with at least a 3.5 grade point average. For those not currently or recently in school, the foundation will consider an equivalent employment history. Completed applications must be received by April 30 in order to be considered. UPON ARRIVAL TO POST TIME FARM, ALL HORSES MUST HAVE:

Signed by the owner/agent/trainer verifying that the horse has been healthy with no sign of infectious disease and has not had a fever above 102°F within 72 hours of arrival. An Event Participation Declaration Form is available in this prize list and at HitsShows.com. A new Event Participation Declaration Form must be filed each time the horse enters the property. Horses stabled off the property that “ship-in” on a regular basis must comply with this requirement as well as additional requirements noted on the following pages. PROOF OF VACCINATION A signed statement from the attending veterinarian that the horse has been vaccinated within six months of each show for equine influenza, EHV1 and EHV4. If a vaccination will expire during one of the shows, the horse must receive its new vaccination prior to being issued a competition number for that show.

PRESENTATION OF HEALTH REQUIREMENTS The Equine Health Requirements are required for all horses entering the show grounds both showing and non-showing. Be sure to keep a copy of all of your horse’s equine health requirements in an easily accessible spot (in your tack room or tack trunk, truck or trailer) to ensure you can comply with this requirement. The results on all required papers must indicate the horses’ registered (show) name. Any horse not accompanied by these documents will be directed to the show veterinarian to obtain the required documents and/or vaccinations, and/or will be placed in quarantined stabling until the proper documents are obtained. Any horse showing signs of fever/illness/stress is subject to examination by HITS officials and/or the Show Veterinarian, who may, at their sole discretion, place the horse in quarantined stabling or take further action if deemed necessary. LEXINGTON, KY. –

he USHJA Foundation opened applications for the USHJA Foundation Gochman Family Grant for the 2017 US Pony Finals presented by Collecting Gaits Farm. Applications must be completed and submitted to the Foundation by April 1. Each year, the Foundation awards this grant to up to three riders who exemplify the qualities that are most important in our sport – sportsmanship, tenacity and horsemanship – and would otherwise be unable to go to Pony Finals, to enable them to go. “Last year, we were able to help make the dreams of three young equestrians come true,” said Jennifer Burger, president of the USHJA Foundation. “Again, we encourage any young member who has ever dreamed of going to the US Pony Fi-

nals but thought they would never be able to apply.” The grant is not strictly monetary in nature but rather experience-based. The grant recipient(s) will receive an opportunity to compete at Pony Finals and will be provided an appropriate pony if one is needed. Up to three individuals may be selected each year. The grant aims to inspire young riders to embrace this sport at the earliest age and encourage them to continue growing as equestrians is graciously supported by Becky and David Gochman and family. To date the grant has been awarded to four individuals: Judy Dettore (2016), Riley Hogan (2016), Cecillia Machado (2016) and Matthew Bravo (2015). Nations Cup returns H

ITS’ Ocala Winter Circuit will once again play host to the 2017 FEI Nations Cup CSIO-4* for the third consecutive year on Feb. 17. The inclusive show schedule will continue to give additional opportunities to national and international competitors during Feb. 14-19, the fifth week of the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. The week immediately after Nations Cup will be FEI CSI2 on Feb. 21-26. “We are honored to host the Nations Cup for the third straight year,” said HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri. “It truly speaks for the quality of the event in Ocala for the past two years. We are very excited to have the support of the community to further evolve the event for spectators and teams alike in the Horse Capital of the World.” Ocala Main Street, Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition and the Ocala/Marion County Chamber & Economic Partnership are coordinating “Jump Downtown,” a special event featuring the annual Parade of Nations Horse Celebration on the Downtown Square in Ocala on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. The Parade of Nations will welcome and honor this year’s teams that will compete in the Nations Cup, while showcasing many of the breeds that make Ocala the Horse Capital of the World. Sponsored by the City of Ocala, this family-friendly event is free and open to the public, making it a can’t-miss opportunity to cheer on world-class athletes and enjoy the equine side of the community. “With loyal support from Marion County and the City of Ocala, in addition to Ocala Main Street, IHMS and the CEP, HITS will once again welcome show jumping’s biggest players to Ocala to exemplify our continued commitment to growing the sport for exhibitors and spectators alike,” Struzzieri said.

The Nations Cup Jumping series is equestrian sport’s oldest and most prestigious team challenge, with national teams from around the globe competing for one of the most coveted prizes in this Olympic-level discipline. Last year, the Nations Cup at HITS Ocala garnered over 5,000 on-site spectators, as well as an unprecedented figure of national and international media attention. The 2015 event was ranked as the second highest in national and international media interest for its overall division in that year’s 2015 FEI Nations Cup Media Report. “Now, with two years of experience, we can continue to make Nations Cup Week an extraordinarily special week for both the exhibitor and the loyal spectators of Marion County,” Struzzieri said. “They say the third time’s the charm – and we are certain the 2017 event will live up to the expectation of excellence that HITS is recognized for.” Throughout the Nations Cup Week at HITS Post Time Farm, HITS will offer an upgraded hospitality experience in the Overlook VIP Club featuring ringside seating, as well as beer and wine service and the culinary art of Executive Chef Giuseppe Napoli of The Tavern at Diamond Mills in Saugerties, N.Y. in the USHJA National Hunter Derby will only be awarded toward a declared Hunter section for Horse of the Year points if a horse competes in the declared section a minimum of one time during the competition year. Additionally, now competition managers have the option of having one or two panels of judges. In 2017 the World Championship Hunter Rider Program will include the new Young Hunters 3’, 3’3” and 3’6” as recommended sections. EMILY MILLS PHOTO Points garnered in the Young Hunter 3 and 3’3” sections will count toward Developing Professional awards, and Young Hunters 3’6” points will count toward Professional awards. The WCHR program will also align its green sections with the new Green Hunter naming structure, adjusting sections as follows: First Year Green is now Green Hunter 3’6”; Second Year Green is now Green Hunter 3’9”; and Regular Conformation Hunter is now High Performance Conformation Hunter. he United States Hunter Jumper Association has made key changes to its International Hunter Derby, National Hunter Derby and World Championship Hunter Rider programs, creating USHJA Hunter sections at fence heights from 2’ to 3’ that are open to all competitors for the 2017 competition year. These changes aim to increase participation and value for members. New USHJA Hunter sections are designed to provide competitors with an opportunity to earn Zone Horse of the Year or Stirrup Cup points in typically unrated, open sections with fence heights of 2’, 2’3”, 2’6”, 2’9” or 3’. Competitions may offer any number of these sections. Each section must offer between, three and five classes with one of those classes designated as an under saddle. The sections are open to all competitors riding horses or ponies. The USHJA International Hunter Derby will expand the popular Rider Ranking System used during the International Hunter Derby Championships as an option for competition managers to award additional prize INSURING THE HORSE WORLD money at competitions throughout the series. he USHJA Board of Directors recently elected three new atlarge board members, a national vice president, and a treasurer, and ratified Hunter and Jumper Working Group appointments for chairs and discipline directors. They assumed their duties on the Board of Directors last month. David Distler, of Norwalk, Conn., was elected national vice president, a four-year term. Shelley Campf, of Canby, Ore., was elected treasurer, a two-year term. Katharine Benson, of Whitehouse Station, N.J., and Sissy Wickes, of Unionville, Pa., were elected as at-large directors, four-year terms. Following an unprecedented run-off election in the at-large directors' election between Joe Dotoli, of Chepachet, R.I., and Britt McCormick, of Allen, Texas, Dotoli was elected as an at-large director. The following individuals were appointed to the Board of Directors for two-year terms during their working group meetings and ratified by the Board as follows: • Hunter Working Group Chair (Hunter Vice President) - Dianne Johnson, Kirkland, Wash.

• Hunter Discipline Director - Betty Oare, Warrenton, Va. • Jumper Working Group Chair (Jumper Vice President) - Charlotte Skinner-Robson, North Hollywood, Calif. • Jumper Discipline Directors - Jimmy Torano, Wellington, Fla., and DiAnn Langer, Johnston, S.C. Additionally, Jennifer Burger of Buffalo, N.Y., Cheryl Rubenstein, Memphis, Tenn., and Robin Fairclough, Morriston, Fla., were elected to represent USHJA on the USEF National Breeds and Disciplines Council. Candidates for the Board of Directors election were determined through a multi-step process. USHJA members submitted nominations for USHJA Board of Director positions, which were then reviewed by the USHJA Nominating Committee. The committee members interviewed candidates before submitting to the USHJA Board of Directors their recommended nominee for each position for inclusion on the ballot. Upon receipt of the Nominating Committee's recommended candidates, the Board of Directors had 10 days within which to name additional qualified nominations to the ballot for each of the positions from the floor, if they chose to do so. ITS Inc. has announced that ShowNet, show jumping’s leading tracking and live streaming service, will offer upgraded features to the already existing ShowNet capabilities at the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. Throughout the winter show season, HITS exhibitors across the country can expect deluxe digital services provided by ShowNet including: a results service on the ShowNet mobile app and for ShowNet members; email alert system which includes pre-start information, tracked entry alerts, final results, live video, class start times; and the opportunity to purchase, maintain and view competition videos through a personal footage library. “HITS prides itself on offering its customers a premier product— from footing, to hospitality experience, to stabling; and now, with the help of ShowNet, we can give our clients across the country access to real-time results, class updates and video content,” said HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri. “Through implementa-

Props USHJA offering recognition to qualified riding schools LEXINGTON, KY. –

he United States Hunter Jumper Association is offering recognition for lesson programs, riding facilities, equestrian schools and other types of educational equestrian programs that emphasize horsemanship and sportsmanship, promote safety and offer introductory hunter/jumper lessons through its Recognized Riding Academy program. “The USHJA Recognized Riding Academy program is designed to encourage the continued development and growth of programs across the country that cultivate well-rounded equestrians from their earliest riding experience,” said Kevin Price, USHJA executive director. “Building strong foundations of horsemanship, sportsmanship and safety for equestrians benefits our entire sport, and we look forward to helping connect new or aspiring riders with programs that focus on those attributes.” Becoming a Recognized Riding Academy provides these programs with national recognition and exposure. Programs meeting the USHJA Recognized Riding Academy criteria can be found on the USHJA website, and

each receives a recognition plaque to display at their facility. Recognized Riding Academies can participate in the USHJA Affiliate Equitation Awards program, and they receive discounts on USHJA Trainer Certification Program manuals. Interested riding programs must apply and meet USHJA requirements to become a Recognized Riding Academy. The requirements focus on minimum facility, operational, safety and staff standards. These programs must operate out of facilities that follow basic industry standards for horse care, offer hunter/jumper riding lessons of varying levels, unmounted instruction, and lessons with an instructor/student ratio that ensures safety, and follow a written curriculum for all instruction. Additionally, they must make safety a priority, requiring ASTM/SEI approved helmets and approved footwear, as well as following a variety of other safety standards and maintaining at least $1 million in insurance coverage for the operation of their riding program. The programs must have at least one staff person who is a USHJA member in good standing, and their staff must demonstrate a commitment to continuing education. ITS Inc. has announced that the United States Equestrian Federation has chosen HITS-on-the-Hudson here as the proposed location for the 2017 FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships – hosting the disciplines of jumping, dressage and paradressage – pending approval from the FEI. The event will be held July 18-23, in conjunction with the HITS-on-theHudson IV Horse Show. “HITS is thrilled by the prospect of this huge opportunity,” said HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri. “This competition is the only FEI championship held annually on this continent, and it gives junior and young riders an unparalleled experience in the sport early in the development of their

Sited USHJA names its 10 training-session locales PALM SPRINGS, CALIF. –

he United States Hunter Jumper Association has announced the 10 locations around the country that will host the 2017 USHJA Emerging Athletes Program Regional Training Sessions, presented by Dover Saddlery, and that the George M. Humphrey Equestrian Center at Lake Erie College, in Painesville, Ohio, will host the 2017 National Training Session. “We had really incredible applications this year, which made selecting locations a challenge,” said Sally Ike, chair of the USHJA Emerging Athletes Program Committee. “We’re very pleased with the locations and are looking forward to announcing the dates and opening applications in February.” The following locations will host EAP Regional Training Sessions at dates to be announced: • Mt. Holyoke College Equestrian Center, South Hadley, Mass. (Zone 1) • Cazenovia College Equine Education Center, Cazenovia, N.Y. (Zone 2)

The 86-acre facility offers a 100’ x 225’ indoor arena with seating for 700 spectators. “The George M. Humphrey Equestrian Center was a wonderful host facility last year, and we’re very excited to be back there,” continued Ike. The Emerging Athletes Program is supported in part by a generous grant from the United States Equestrian Federation, as well as individual donors through the USHJA Foundation. Another opportunity Jockey Club offers program for non-show T-bred retirees

o showcase thoroughbreds that are not competing in shows but are still successful in a second career as recreational mounts, the Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program has announced the creation of the Thoroughbred Recreational Riding Incentive Program. The program is designed for thoroughbred owners who spend most of their time outside of the show ring, whether on trails (including competitive trail rides), endurance rides or even driving. “Many off-track thoroughbreds and owners are more suited to recreational riding than to showing,” said Kristin Leshney, TIP coordinator. “The Thoroughbred Recreational Riding Incentive Program enables recreational riders to be rewarded for choosing thoroughbreds.” Multiple awards are offered depending on the number of hours spent 38 Horse Capital Digest • January 13, 2017

riding or driving, ranging from a TIP patch for 25 hours to a TIP fleece jacket for 10,000 hours. To receive awards, riders must record their riding time in one-hour increments, rounding down to the whole hour. Arena riding, lessons and show hours are not eligible for awards. “We are excited to have more thoroughbreds becoming part of the TIP program and gaining recognition for their diversity as equine partners,” Leshney said. For purposes of eligibility for the program, a “thoroughbred” is defined as any horse that has been registered with the Jockey Club or a foreign thoroughbred stud book recognized by the Jockey Club.
