he HITS Ocala grand prix ring has seen many new faces over the last several years with the heightened excitement of qualifying for the Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix, formerly the Pfizer Million. However, few have had the impact that Lisa Goldman has. The young professional from Hawthorn Woods, Illinois captured her fifth grand prix ribbon in two weeks, was first and second in the Jan. 31 $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, and avenged her second-place finish during Week II with the blue ribbon in the Feb. 3 $50,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, aboard Mary Goldman’s Centurion B. that many never find and it seems to be working to their advantage. “I’ve had him since he was two years old,” she proudly recalled. “He’s an American bred Belgium Warmblood and I jumped his first jump ever with him.” It was another perfect day as course designer Doug Russell of Ocala, Florida prepared one of the most exciting tracks of the season. Twenty-seven horse and rider combinations started the class and the contenders soon rose to the top as a five trip jump-off emerged after the first round. “It was very big,” said Goldman of the course. “It was really challenging and there were a few traps in the first round that got a lot of people.” Russell’s first round course included 15 efforts with an early double combination and a triple in the home stretch. The first fence, a tall oxer, was not so inviting and ruined any hope of a clear round for several riders. But what seemed even more daunting were the incredibly long distances and bending lines in between fences. They not only made it difficult to leave the jumps up, but also survive the clock. Mike McCormick, husband to Tracy Fenney and coowner of MTM Farm commented, “This was a big, galloping course – lots of galloping.” McCormick has trained Fenney to countless victories spanning several decades and he was certain this would not be one of the easier classes for many competitors to ride successfully. The starting list for the jump-off wrote an exciting story of

Junior Michael Hughes of Allendale, New Jersey, who made his $1 million debut last September at HITS Championship Weekend also piloted two mounts to the jump-off with Luxina and Mac Arthur, both owned by Christina Fried. And then there was Goldman, who made the journey to HITS Ocala for the first time this year and quickly threw her cards on the table. Russell’s jump-off course made sure to keep everyone on their toes with nine efforts that required lots of galloping and finished over a tall vertical with all planks sitting right in front of the in-gate. Fenney and MTM Timon returned first and were en route to being double-clear before a plank from the last fence came down. They ended with a time of 45.88 seconds. his year, February, the smallest (aka shortest) month of the year begins with BIG news at the Florida Horse Park. The first BIG news occurred, Wednesday, January 23, 2013, when Governor Rick Scott, signed an amended lease agreement setting the stage for future development of the Florida Horse Park, and ultimately for significant economic growth for Ocala, Marion County and the surrounding communities. Our second BIG news is a spectacular fundraising event coming up Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 6:00 p.m.: Sylvia Zerbini’s Grande Liberté. The new lease agreement is an important landmark for the future success of the Florida Horse Park. Specific changes in the lease include the following:
■ Extends leases through to 2072 with the ability to request extensions during that period; ■ Modifies our legal description, specifically reflects a change in park boundaries to include the NE corner in exchange for SW corner; ■ Provides for our ability to develop within our master plan without pre-approval by state agencies thereby facilitating future growth; ■ Provides for the ability to sublease the property to third parties for use within our master plan, for 10 year periods or less or for projects of $2,000,000 or less. This is everything we asked for and more. With the new lease in hand, we can now begin in earnest to attract patrons to help us repair the grounds, build our barns, construct a covered arena, and ultimately to make the Florida Horse Park a focal point of economic stimulus for the community. Sylvia Zerbini’s Grande Liberté will be hosted by BG Farms of Ocala (located right next door to the Florida
Horse Park). This one-night only, live performance will feature Sylvia Zerbini, former star of the acclaimed equestrian spectacle, Calvalia, and other equestrian artists. Be prepared to be amazed as the beautiful Sylvia Zerbini transforms a spellbinding herd of horses “at liberty” into the ultimate equestrian performing art. Sylvia’s gift for orchestrating nine Arabians at once is mesmerizing and has earned accolades from widespread media ranging from the Los Angeles Times to CNN and Arabian Horse World. Tickets are going fast for this fabulous event, at $150.00 for general admission and $2,000.00 for corporate tables of six. Price for admission includes the live performance and an after-event, hosted by the FOUNDATION for the Florida Horse Park with hors d’oeuvres and a no-host bar where our guests will have the opportunity to meet the stars of this wonderful performance. And since February is the month we are all supposed to show our sweethearts how much we care, this event would be an extra-special belated Valentine’s Day gift! The staff at the FOUNDATION for the Florida Horse would love to help you, so give them a call at (307) 307-6699, ext. 8 or email Foundation@flhorsepark.com. The commitment and generosity of the community, our leaders and local businesses are crucial to achieving our shared success. We continue to be humbled and grateful for the generous donations and support. On behalf of the Florida Horse Park, we want to thank all of you for your time, your treasure and your talent.
Happy Trails! Connie Duff Wise, Chairman of the Board Florida Horse Park

Patty Stovel and Kenya Ride to a Win in the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix at HITS Ocala
Williams will be designing at HITS Ocala and HITS Thermal this winter while showcasing is inventory of CCI Jumps at both shows as well. Stovel and Kenya led a field of 34 and were at the helm of an impressive top five. Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas was second with Mr. and Mrs. Ken Mackenzie’s To The Nines with a total score of 164, while Bedminster, New Jersey’s Amanda Steege was third aboard Susan Darragh’s Zidane with a final score of 161. Rounding out the top five was Helen Goddard of Lincroft, New Jersey with her own Blue Highway in fourth and Kendall Casaccio of Mermore, New Jersey in the irons of her own Wilhelm in fifth. “Today’s course rode well and turned out very nice,” said Stovel. “The bank and all the options keep the class interesting. They add just enough difficulty to make the class fun.” Stovel is no stranger to sitting atop Kenya as she sold the nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood to his current owner and was asked to continue riding him. “He was great today,” she said. “We went early in the first round and he jumped really well. Then he did the Amateurs with Michelle in between rounds and came back for the second round and nailed it.” Durpetti and Stovel believe Kenya has what it takes to be competitive in the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final during HITS Championship Weekend this fall in Saugerties, New York and are pointing the gelding toward qualifying and competing in the big-money event.
P
atty Stovel of Chester Springs, Pennsylvania took little time to warm-up to the new Outside Course at HITS Ocala. Her first time competing in the dynamic ring turned up a win for her and Michelle Durpetti’s Kenya. They combined a pair of 86s to end the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix with a total score of 177 and the win on Feb. 3. The course, designed by Tucker Williams of Houston, Texas, welcomed both horse and rider to several options, utilized the bank in both directions and included some long galloping lines. According to Williams, the horses and riders are being introduced to a whole new concept of course design and are performing really well. “It’s a great place to show off your horse,” said Williams. “Designing courses for the ring is like a jigsaw puzzle – it’s challenging to make it right, but the finished product is multifunctional and the horses and riders are really excelling.”

Perennial Peanut:
Forage Nutritional Composition and Feeding Value By Lori Warren (et. al.) – UF/IFAS Equine Nutritionist–Edited by: Mark Shuffitt
P
erennial peanut (Arachis glabrata; also known as rhizoma peanut) is a warmseason legume that grows well in the lower southeastern United States. This legume is grown for hay, silage and pasture, and as ornamental ground cover. Perennial peanut fills a unique niche in this region because there is no other perennial warm-season legume that rivals its forage quality, persistence, and broad spectrum of uses. Presently, it is commercially produced primarily in north Florida and south Georgia. Most of this production is for hay--in particular, for horses. Temperate perennial forage crops such as alfalfa (Medicago sativa) do not grow well in the lower southeastern United States. Yields of 6000 to 11,000 lb of perennial peanut hay per acre are common (Prine and French, 1999; Hill 2002). There is a high value market for hay from perennial peanut in the southeastern United States, in particular to horse owners, as an alternative to expensive alfalfa hay that is shipped in from other parts of the country (Degner, et al. 2003). Perennial peanut production acreage is increasing, but it is still a relatively new crop grown on about 30,000 acres in north Florida and south Georgia. Perennial peanut hay should not be confused with “peanut hay” which is made from the residue after pod/seed harvest of the annual peanut (Arachis hypogaea). However, this annual peanut hay is not desirable for horses as it is dusty, is almost entirely stems, and is relatively low in nutritional value (Hill 2002).
NUTRITIONAL COMPOSITION OF PERENNIAL PEANUT HAY The average composition of perennial peanut hay compares very closely with that of alfalfa hay. However, there are variations in the composition of perennial peanut hay. 18 Horse Capital Digest • February 15, 2013
This variation is probably the result of many factors including maturity at harvest, time of cut (first cut vs. second), amount of weed and grass, weather conditions prior to and at harvest, soil fertility, etc. Because of this variation, each lot of hay purchased or produced should be analyzed for forage quality. The UF/IFAS Forage Extension Laboratory located on the Range Experiment Station in Ona, FL. will analyze hay for $5.00 a sample. The submission form can be found on-line at http://rcrec-ona.ifas.ufl.edu/
NUTRITIONAL VALUE FOR HORSES To date, only two nutritional value of perennial peanut hay for horses research studies have been conducted – Lieb et al. (1993) and Eckert (2008). These two studies found perennial peanut hay to be very similar to alfalfa in digestible energy, as well as dry matter, crude protein, and fiber (NDF) digestibilities. Eckert (2008) also conducted an in vitro study to evaluate the potential digestibility of various perennial peanut hays. In vitro (Latin for “within the glass”) procedures simulate digestion by animals in the laboratory. One such procedure was used to evaluate several perennial peanut hays, including hays of two new perennial peanut varieties. The in vitro digestibility of all perennial peanut hays was as good as or greater than that of alfalfa. An exception was with 'Arbrook' variety which had a slightly lower digestibility than alfalfa. However, all perennial peanut hays had very good digestibility. A sample of the perennial peanut hay used in the horse digestibility study of Eckert (2008) was saved and included in the in vitro analysis. The digestibility determined in vitro was very similar to the digestibility determined in vivo (“within the animal”; 68% vs. 66%)
PALATABILITY OF PERENNIAL PEANUT FORAGE Perennial peanut hay typically has finer stem texture than alfalfa hay. This is desirable from an intake perspective, especially for horses. Lieb et al., (1993) observed that the voluntary intake by horses was greater for perennial peanut hay than for alfalfa hay. However, in a horse preference study by Eckert (2008), no differences were noted for quantity consumed or the time spent eating perennial peanut or alfalfa hays. The reason(s) for the different results between the two horse studies is not known, but may be the result of differences in hay quality and/or hay texture.
FEEDING TIPS FOR HORSES Since perennial peanut hay is very palatable, care should be taken to prevent over consumption by horses. Because of its high nutritional value, there would be few instances in which perennial peanut hay should be selffed to horses. Perennial peanut hay is best used as a supplemental feed to other feeds such as grass hay. For example, a mature 1,000 pound, light activity horse (two hours or less riding per day) in good condition eating 16 to 20 pounds per day requires about one pound of protein and ten pounds of total digestible nutrients (TDN; energy) per day. This requirement can be met with 14 to 16 pounds of bermudagrass hay plus two to four pounds of perennial peanut hay per day. HCD

isa Goldman wasted no time adjusting to a new winter circuit. She and her barn of 14 horses from Red Coat Farm in Hawthorn Woods, Illinois are at HITS Ocala for the first time and are riding right to the top. The highlight, however, was Goldman’s victory in the Jan. 31 $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, with Centurion B, owned by her mother Mary Goldman. “This class was exciting down to the very last second. The course rode nicely and I loved the combination at the end of the first round,” said Goldman. “We have always heard great things about the HITS Ocala circuit and we now know that they are all very true – we love it here.” Goldman and the rest of Red Coat Farm escaped the brisk winter of Illinois to bask in some Florida sun and they iced the cake with several blue ribbons. Goldman and Centurion B won the previous week’s $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome and were second in the $50,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. “We have owned Centurion B since he was three and I

jumped his first cross rail with him,” said Goldman of the 11 year old Belgian Warmblood, purchased from Bannockburn Farm in Indiana. “We owe a lot to today’s class sponsor. We have our entire barn of 80 horses on SmartPak supplements and they perform as well as we could ever ask.” Today, Goldman and Centurion B topped a field of 27 on a course designed by Doug Russell of Ocala, Florida. He built 13 obstacles in the Grand Prix Ring, including a double combination at fence six and a triple at 13. Six returned for the jump-off, including Goldman on two mounts. Laura Linback of Mundelin, Illinois was first to tackle the jump-off course and set the bar high with a clear round and an early Great American Time to Beat of 41.74 seconds aboard Woodrun’s HH Dauphin. Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas contested with MTM Farm’s MTM Centano, but picked up four faults with a rail at the second fence of the course. Lisa Goldman and Centurion B
Impression Goldman and Centurion B rode third and posted the winning round in 36.53 seconds with three still to go, including her second mount Morocco. Fenney returned, but again fell victim to fence two with MTM Farm’s MTM Timon. Adrienne Iverson was next to challenge Goldman, but finished with eight faults. Last to ride in the jump-off, Goldman rode into second with a clear round in 38.57 seconds with Morocco. Linback finished third, and Fenney was fourth and fifth, respectively. Aside from obvious celebration, today’s win was a sentimental victory for the Goldmans as the husband of Centurion B’s breeder, Fletcher McCracken, recently suffered a stroke and has since only been able to utter one phrase – Centurion B. When McCracken spoke to the Goldmans this evening, they were able to tell him that his beloved horse won him a grand prix. But, they aren’t stopping there – Goldman has big plans for her horse and is hoping to qualify for the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix in Saugerties, New York this September. “It would be a dream come true to ride in a $1 million class,” said Goldman. “Aside from the Olympics, there isn’t much else I could wish for.”
$2500 BROOK LEDGE OPEN WELCOME Earlier in the week, Tracy Magness of Hughsville, Maryland and Mr. & Mrs. John Bartko’s Tarco Van Ter Moude rode to a win in the $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome. The placing put her in top contention for the Brook Ledge Rider Bonus, which includes a $1,500 shipping credit for the rider who accumulates the most points in the Brook Ledge Open Welcome classes throughout the HITS Ocala circuit. Goldman found success early in the week as well, this time aboard Stephanie St. John’s El Dorado B. They were second in the Brook Ledge Open Welcome, followed by Columbian Jorge Verswyvel and Luis Garcia’s Petirojo. After a big week in the grand prix ring during week I, Aaron Vale of Morriston, Florida was fourth in the irons of Thinkslikeahorse’s Kryptonite. Michelle Vandal of Mississauga, Ontario was fifth with her own VDL Viper H. Magness topped 22 to sit pretty after Wednesday’s offering, and Brook Ledge Horse Transportation will continue to present a weekly jumper class throughout the six weeks remaining in the circuit. HCD

The students are novice six, seven, and eight-year-old
Equi-Venture Farm traveled to Ocala from Topeka, Ks, for the third year with a new group of six inexperienced youngsters. According to barn manager Lisa Oliver, HITS Ocala offers a total package training opportunity every time. “We’re just right here and the rings are just right there to go and do anything,” she explained. “And there’s so many people that they just come up to us, so we just tack the horses up, go and we try them. If they like (the horse), then the vet’s right here. It’s all really convenient.” The constant commotion of the event helps desensitize the horses and prepare them for show life, Oliver added. “There’s just a lot of activity so it helps get the horses use to all the different activity other than at home. It’s normally pretty quiet, so then the horses are just use to all the dirt bikes and the golf carts,” she said. SBS Farm trainer Jennifer Alfano of Buffalo, NY, said she and her barn call HITS Ocala “home away from home,” and by arriving a month before the show starts helps get the horses settled in. This year, she brought four novice horses to learn the ropes. “If you don’t start young ones, you don’t have any older ones,” said Alfano, of why she chooses to keep bringing up amateur hunters and jumpers. said she felt returning to HITS Ocala each year with her seasoned Grand Prix horses was to exceed her results and expectations. As a professional trainer for a barn, where the owners are looking to her for success, is a greater responsibility. “(To) bring (the young horse) along, to make it confident, keep it confident, improve its ability because they all have the raw talent, but then it’s teaching that horse to put that talent together and make sure you do it in the correct way,” she explained. “That’s definitely a little bit of pressure.” It’s hard, consistent work building the amateur horses, each trainer agreed, but benefits tend to out-weigh the challenges. The time and money spent are worth seeing horses they’ve trained continuing their careers. Alfano added, “It’s always fun when they’re growing up and to be able to say, ‘Oh, I started that one’ or ‘I showed him at his first show,’ so that’s always rewarding whether they’re still with you or not.” For Oliver, witnessing and being a part of the horses’ growth is an accomplishment. “When you come day one to the last day that you’re here Each one of them is different and each one of them learns with these horses it’s a big a different way, so each day, you’re trying to focus on ‘How change, a big improvement.
