racy Fenney went two-for-two last week with a win in the Jan. 24 $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health and in the Jan. 27 $50,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health aboard MTM Farm’s MTM Timon. Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas showed her two longtime mounts on the Sunday, MTM Centano and MTM Timon and produced clear rounds on both, to help shape an exciting jump-off of eight horse and rider combinations over a course designed by Ken Krome of Westminster, Maryland. “I think this was a really good, forward, confidence building class,” Krome commented. “I was really happy with the way it turned out. The horses jumped great, I thought eight was a good number clear and 12 finished with four faults, which is great. There was not a lot of trouble on the course.” The weather was beautiful and the stands full of spectators as Aaron Vale attempted the jump-off first aboard Zippo II, owned by 2VR Showjumpers. Vale, of Morriston, Florida, had dominated Week I of the competition with back-to-back wins in the Grand Prix and looked for his third win early in the season. He posted a four fault round in 41.00 seconds to set the pace. Next to show was Lisa Goldman of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois and Mary Goldman’s Centurion B. Goldman is enjoying her first season at HITS Ocala and has already seen several early top finishes. Her student Grace Knox captured the win in the $15,000 Marshall & Sterling Children’s/Adult Jumper Classic as Goldman tried to emulate that success. She posted a fast doubleclear round in 39.21 seconds to take the lead and post a new Great American Time to Beat. Goldman’s lead held up for the next several trips until Fenney returned second to last, with her second mount of
the jump-off , MTM Timon. After suffering a four fault round with MTM Centano, Fenney re-strategized to take the lead. A tight inside turn that nobody else dared gave Fenney the advantage and shaved two seconds off the time to beat in 37.77 seconds. “The course was great today, it was very friendly for the horses which is nice this early in the season. It was competitive, but we didn’t have to pull out all the stops,” said Fenney, who is primed for another appearance in the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix. “It’s great to be back here on the road to the Pfizer Million again. We work towards that all year long and we start here in Ocala. I haven’t jumped these horses at all the last several
Week II
months, and they’re being fantastic. We just started using Pfizer’s Xylexis on both of my Grand Prix horses and they showed up to Ocala as healthy as can be, so we couldn’t be any happier.” Goldman ended in second with Patty Stovel in third aboard her own Carigor Z. Jonathon Millar of Perth, Ontario was fourth with Iron Horse Farm’s Cantero Z and Santiago Medina and his own Monterrey in fifth.
$15,000 MARSHALL & STERLING CHILDREN’S/ADULT JUMPER CLASSIC It was another exciting weekend for child and adult jumper riders as 41 competitors made their way to the grand prix ring to capture show jumping glory in the $15,000 Marshall & Sterling Children’s/Adult Jumper Classic. Grace Knox of North Barrington, Illinois and her own Rapidash captured the blue ribbon after an exciting 12 horse jump-off. Lacy Morrone Cramer of Pittstown, New Jersey and Equi-Sport
LLC’s Val De Loir-Imoo took home second place while Alissa Kinsey of Danville, New Hampshire and her own Grisset rounded out the top three.
$5,000 U-DUMP JUNIOR/AMATEUR-OWNER JUMPER HIGH CLASSIC The $5,000 U-Dump Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper High Classic was the prelude to the Jan. 27 grand prix as 20 junior and amateur jumper riders took to the ring. Callie Morgan Smith of Jacksonville, Florida topped the field aboard Smithfield Farm’s Upstaire, while Jordan Coyne of New Port Richey, Florida and her own Cordovo came in second place and Erin Haas of Ann Arbor, Michigan and North Face Farm’s As di Chupito took third, respectively. HCD (above) Tracy Fenney went 2 for 2 during week II of the HITS Winter Circuit aboard her two mounts MTM Centano and MTM Timon. (inset) Lisa Goldman was 2nd place finisher on Centurion B.

Florida Horse Park Goals and Missions If you are like most people, you’ve probably experienced the sudden burst of motivation that comes in early January, as holiday indulgences make their way to the waistline and New Year’s resolutions force a new look at what we see. At the Florida Horse Park, it’s not resolutions, but our goals and mission that we are focusing on as this New Year begins. I recently read an interesting article that had some insights into achieving our goals (aka resolutions). The trick to achieving your goals and supporting your mission is to put these simple steps to practice: First, you must choose the right mission, for the right reasons. At the Florida Horse Park, we sincerely believe we have done just that. Our mission is to attract, sustain and grow our viable equine and agricultural interests to provide a support structure for local and statewide economic stimulation. We are committed to helping the businesses and families of Central Florida, Marion County and Ocala; many of whom own and work at the horse farms, feed and tack stores, equipment sales and rentals, veterinary services, restaurants and hotels. Second, you must create a plan. The Foundation at the Florida Horse Park wanted to harness New Year’s motivation into something that will carry us through this next year and set the stage for continued success in subsequent years; we have planned for both smaller and larger events in 2013. Our first fundraising event will be a fun-filled evening of Whinny, Wine and Nibbles, a blind wine tasting and food pairing, held at the Artisinal Dish in Ocala, on January 31. The cost is $75.00 per person; for reservations, call us at (352) 307-6699, ext. 8. We are also launching a $2 million capital campaign this year to fund a covered arena, a Triage Center, vendor space and possibly a museum. With a good plan in
hand, making significant progress toward our goal will be much easier. Third, stay on track and don’t be afraid to ask for help! The Florida Horse Park is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, funded entirely by private donations and corporate sponsorships. Contributions and significant capital investment have enabled us to provide our visitors with fun-filled experiences and will continue to be critical not only for future growth, but for maintaining and sustaining the existing park facilities, including the sound systems, equine barns, RV sites, dressage letters, and even general operating costs. Fourth, remain flexible, adjust to fit the situation, and keep on going. A realization among goal-setting experts is the need to continually modify the approach—sometimes even changing goals to better meet ever changing circumstances and the needs of the organization and the community. To survive, the Florida Horse Park has tried to be flexible as we continually strive to meet and exceed the expectations of our supporters and donors, both locally and at the State level. Lastly, the flip-side of setting ambitious goals is that you have to remember to acknowledge partial success, because any success is cause for celebration. Our successes, whether big or small, mean that we are one step closer to meeting our goals; that we have made progress; and we are better off than before we began. We thank you for your support and wish you success in accomplishing your New Year’s resolutions! And as the Florida Horse Park embarks on an exciting New Year, we ask for your continued support as we strive to fulfill our mission and achieve our goals. Without you, we couldn’t do a thing!
Happy Trails! Connie Duff Wise, Chairman of the Board Florida Horse Park

Shachine Belle and INXS Turn a 2013 Goal Into Reality With a Win in Jan. 27 $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix

transitioned to the hunter ring after winning Thursday’s $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, and piloted Cammy Turgon’s Scoop to third with a final score of 161. Belle isn’t the only one making a debut on the road to qualifying for the Diamond Mills Hunter Prix Final. It seems that $150,000 for first place is attracting many new faces, including several in the event’s top five. Brook Saltzman of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois rode her own Ariano to fourth, while Hunter Holloway capped the top five with Hays Investment Corp.’s Cascina for their second Devocoux Hunter Prix top five in two weeks. Devoucoux, the makers of fine French saddles, will continue to present weekly hunter prix, which represent the only way for hunter riders to punch their ticket to the prestigious Diamond Mills Hunter Prix Final during HITS Championship Weekend in Saugerties in September. Shachine Belle and INXS (top and inset) Alex Riccio and Alejandro (bottom)
or best friends Robin Swinderman and Shachine Belle, their 2013 goal is off to a picture perfect start. After competing her horse INXS in the amateur- owner hunters for the past several years, Swinderman of Morriston, Florida has set her sights on INXS showing in the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final during HITS Championship Weekend in Saugerties, New York. With trainer Belle in the irons, they started their qualifying efforts Jan. 27 with a win in the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter prix at HITS Ocala. “They have been doing the amateurs together and she [Swinderman] wanted to see him [INXS] do something different,” said Belle, who hails from Farmington, Connecticut. The Devoucoux Hunter Prix took place on the new Outside Course at HITS Ocala, modeled after the dynamic ring that was home to last year’s Diamond Mills and HITS Hunter Prix Finals at HITS-on-the-Hudson. “We are both very excited – today was awesome. Riding in the new ring was great – jumping the bank made the course fun and the footing was perfect. I think that is a great addition to the show,” added Belle. Belle and INXS, affectionately called Aiden around the barn, rode to the second highest score of the first round with an 82 and then took control in the second round with an 85 for a 167 total and the win. “He is always perfect and today was no different,” said Belle of the 10-year-old Warmblood gelding. “Our biggest goal is to get to Saugerties this year and we are off to a great start.” Jennifer Alfano of Buffalo, New York and Sharon O’Neil’s Rose Hill were one point behind Belle and INXS after the first round and posted an 83 in the second for a total of 164 and the red ribbon. Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas
$1,500 HITS HUNTER PRIX After riding into the top ten in last week’s $1,500 Hunter Prix, Alexa Riccio of Cheshire, Connecticut made a marked improvement with her own Alejandro and boasted the top
score of the day, an 85, to take the win in the weekly qualifier for the HITS $250,000 Hunter Prix Final. The popular new class for junior and amateur hunter riders will again join the Diamond Mills Hunter Prix Final to highlight hunter competition during HITS Championship Weekend. For Corinne Milbury of Boston, Massachusetts consistent rides delivered another second-place finish to her and her own Kavalier. Marion County, Horse Capital of the World® has more horses than any other county in the U.S. Horse operations vary in terms of the number of horses, from small (1–3 horses) to large commercial operations that breed, train, or stable horses. A pasture serves several purposes for the horse; it is both an area for exercise and a source of high quality forage. A high quality pasture and/or hay can provide a balanced ration of energy, protein, minerals, and vitamins that a horse needs. However, even on a good quality pasture or hay, free-choice vitamin/mineral mix and water are needed to adequately meet the horse's daily nutrient requirements. Horses not receiving supplemental feed will consume about 1.5%–2.5% of their body UF/IFAS Marion County weight as forage per day. Thus, an Livestock Agent average horse weighing 1,000 lbs Mark Shuffitt would require a minimum of 15– 25 lbs of dry forage or hay per day. mal gastrointestinal function. The fiber content of a good horse hay should contain 30%–40% acid detergent fiber (ADF) and 50%–65% neutral detergent fiber (NDF) in order to provide for normal gastrointestinal function. On lush pasture, supplemental hay may be required to ensure adequate intake of fiber. Pastures for horses can be grown in nearly all locations in Florida. Variations in soil and climatic conditions make some locations and sites better suited to production of particular forage species than others. The role of improved pastures in supplying forage varies from farm to farm, depending on the type of horse, available facilities, quality of these facilities, and personal preference of the operator. It is possible for horses to receive a large portion of their feed from pastures; however, if this is to be achieved, careful consideration must be given to planning and carrying out a forage production and utilization program. The factors that must be considered in improved pasture production are: site characteristics, production goals, forage varieties, liming and fertilization, and grazing management.
SITE Successful establishment and long-term productivity of a horse pasture will depend on the suitability of the site for the forage species chosen and whether the forage meets the production goals and management abilities of the owner. Soil characteristics and the climate of an area must be considered when selecting the forage for a site. Soil drainage is of particular importance because some forages, like perennial peanut and bermudagrass, do not tolerate poorly drained soils, while others, such as bahiagrass, are adapted to a wide range of soil drainage types. Most Florida soils are low in fertility and pH, and those limitations are generally overcome by using fertilizer and lime, if recommended by a soil test. Forages used in Florida vary widely in cold tolerance. Before planting, it is important to determine if the forage can survive typical winters in that part of the state. In addition, choice of forage species for a given site must take into consideration whether the owner is relying on the pasture for nutrition or simply as a clean place to exercise. Higher nutritive value forages usually require more management, while those with the primary purpose of maintaining cover often require less. HCD

Vendors recognize the shopping taste of dog owners stocking shelves with an array of outfits to please any liking. The horse show dog’s life is a symbiotic relationship of a hoof in paw marriage. A beautiful sometimes-jealous trinity involving a human, horse and hound. This brings the essence of family to many. Dogs are fresh, fickle and just plain fun. Their unconditional love manifest in their warm eyes and wagging tails. They trot behind their owners with dedication and cadence. When owners are asked about their four legged fur companion they simply glow with admiration telling stories of their connection. Some rescued, presented as gifts, pet store finds or others merely wandered up. The stories are radiance of grace. Mike McCormick of MTM Farms beams with joy as he

racy Fenney admits to having big plans for 2013, not the least of which include the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix. She and MTM Farm’s MTM Timon got those plans underway on Jan. 24 with a win in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, during Week II at HITS Ocala. Fenney and her 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding bested eight in the jump-off after a field of 30 rode a 13-obstacle course designed by Ken Krome of Westminster, Maryland. “I thought the course was certainly fair for $25,000, but was not without a few challenges,” said Fenney. The track included three double Tracy Fenney and combinations – a vertical to an oxer MTM Timon at five, an oxer to a vertical at nine and the final vertical to vertical at 12. It was the last combination – a tight one stride – that dished out the most trouble, according to Fenney. Of the eight who advanced to the jump-off, five where clear and it was Jared Petersen of Arch, Florida who set an early Great American Time to Beat with a clear round in 38.30 seconds. He piloted Derek Petersen’s Titus 2:11. Fenney was second to ride and was more than ready to wage a battle of speed for the win. Known for their talent of riding against the clock, she and MTM Timon went clear in 37.49 seconds and would not be caught. “I saw the super tight turns that [Jared] Petersen made and knew that we were just going to have to chase him down and hope that everyone behind us would make some mistakes,” said Fenney. James Gillam of North Hatley, Quebec was third in the jump-off and was able to produce a clear round with Maggie Webster’s Channol to sit third with a time of 41.99 seconds. He would drop two spots, however, to finish in fifth. Callan Solem and Horseshow Trail Farm’s VDL Wizard went clear in 40.31 seconds to steal third, but were bumped to fourth by Jenna Friedman of Alpharetta, Georgia in the irons of her own Zidoctro. Fenney has seen success in surplus in grand prix at HITS Ocala in the past several years and has her two top mounts, MTM Timon and MTM Centano ready for another success-

etween riding to first and third in the Jan. 20 $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix and coaching fellow rider Ellen Toon to second, Amanda Steege of Bedminster, New Jersey got the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit started on a high note. After finishing third in last year’s Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final, Steege has lost no momentum and has her sights set on returning to Saugerties, New York this year to again ride in the final. She piloted Tony Arena’s Majestic to the win after a first round score of 83 was combined with the high score of the second round, an 85, for a two-round total of 168. “Not only is he [Majestic] an amazing jumper, he is just a good guy and he always tries his hardest,” said Steege of the 12-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding that carried her to the win. “We started together about four years ago and he does everything from International Hunter Derbies to the 2’ Pre-Adult Hunters – it isn’t often that you find a horse that can do it all.” Arena purchased Majestic from Emil Spadone four years ago and Steege believes that he could be a top contender for the Diamond Mills Hunter Prix Final in September. “We have shown together a lot, but I was really impressed with him today – he went really well despite coming off some rest. He hasn’t shown since October,” said Steege. Toon, of South Salem, New York. and her own Invincible were called back on top after a first round score of 84, but a rub in the second round delivered a score of 81 and a 165 for second place. Steege appeared twice in the top three after riding Monica Oliver’s Kryptonite, a newcomer to the hunter prix scene, to third with an 81 and 82 for an overall score of 163. “He has never done anything like this before, so I was ecstatic with how he performed. Both my horses went extremely well,” said Steege. Brandie Holloway of Topeka, Kansas was fourth in the Devoucoux Hunter Prix with Hays Investment Corp.’s Cascina. The pair posted a final score of 156.5. Rounding out the top Amanda Steege and Majestic
Up Big five was Darcy Hayes of Aurora, Ontario aboard Madison Hayes’ Smile with a total score of 155. “These classes are fantastic,” added Steege. “To win $60,000 last year after coming in third in a hunter class is huge. I hope it sets precedent in our sport and delivers a little bit of well-deserved attention to hunters. Hopefully other shows will begin to follow Tom [Struzzeiri]’s lead.”
$1,500 HITS HUNTER PRIX On Jan 19, Steege coached Kimberly Maloomian of Needham, Massachusetts to a win in the $1,500 HITS Hunter Prix. Maloomian and Urlala, owned by Terry S. Maloomian, kicked off Winter qualifying for the HITS $250,000 Hunter Prix Final, scheduled for this September as part of HITS Championship Weekend in Saugerties, New York. Maloomian posted the top score in the first round with an 81 and returned in the second with an 82 for a two-round total of 163. Behind her, Corinne Milbury of Boston, Massachusetts. finished in second with her own Kavalier. The pair earned a first round score of 79 and a second round score

Their pair of 76’s gave them a final score of 152. “The new ring is great to ride in and today’s course was a nice, flowing ride,” said Maloomian of the Outside Course at HITS Post Time Farm, newly designed and boasting innovated course options for hunter and equitation classes. “I love doing the hunter prix – we always have so much fun.” Maloomian competed with Urlala in last year’s inaugural HITS $250,000 Hunter Prix Final and finished 10th overall with the 11-year-old mare. “She [Urlala] is awesome – she never lets us down,” said Maloomian of the mare who’s other job is carrying Maloomian’s mother in the Pre-Adult Hunters. “Whenever I am standing at the in-gate with Urlala I know that nothing much can go wrong.” Steege says that many of the amateur riders in her barn have designed their schedules around qualifying for the HITS Hunter Prix Final and Maloomian admits that she is

ROMA
From Post-time Farm, go East on U.S. 27, Roma is on the left just east of 60th Avenue in the Publix Shopping Center. “I believe my record is 10 straight days going to Roma – it’s just that good. With the best Italian food in town, great service and Lorenzo cooking up the specialties, it’s a favorite of mine. Roma also shows both TVG and HRTV. They’ve got great specials with one of the best on Mondays – a large cheese pizza that can feed four for only $7.95.” Patrick Vinzant, Business Manager, Florida Equine Publications From the local staff of HDC

FARM MANAGEMENT
H
ello to all! As the New Year gets under way, I want to once again spend time talking about the equine Best Management Practices (BMP) Manual, however, this discussion is not going to be about the large manual meant for professional farms, produced by FDACS (Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services). The manual I am discussing will be completed in the near future and will apply to many more farms in Florida-it is the FDEP’s (Florida Department of Environmental Protection) “Smallscale Horse Operations” Manual. Still in draft form, it also contains BMPs for horse farms, but the intent is meant for the bulk of the farms in Florida, which are facilities not meant to be run as a commercial operation. The large majority of farms in the state fall into this category, as many facilities can be considered to be something of a “family farm”. While some commercial operations don’t have large numbers of animals at their facility, most are classically larger and have a capacity for a much greater number of animals, meaning their environmental impact can potentially be greater. It is essentially because of this that both manuals exist. It’s important to note that, unlike the required adherence of the FDACS Manual for farms established near impaired water bodies, this manual is completely “voluntary” for farms and is only intended to be an educational tool/guide for good environmental stewardship. Its goal is to help teach farm owners how to minimize nonpoint source pollution, which will protect Florida’s surface and ground waters. Local and state regulations will take precedence over anything contained in the manual, meaning that any legislation in your area specific to manure management, fertilization, etc., will supersede any guidelines set by the FDEP manual. One need not be worried about getting MORE restrictive information put forward to horse farm owners and managers because this “new” information is essentially the same that has been previously disseminated. It is also an excellent tool that can assist you and your farm in adhering to and complying with already stated BMPs. Similar to the larger FDACS manual, many of the

same topics are going to be covered in this smaller version. It is user friendly, only about 20 or so pages in length and contains excellent information on topics such as: manure management, composting, pasture management, pesticide use and pharmaceutical use. Additionally, there are good explanatory sections on Florida’s water resources, nutrients, erosion and water quality impacts. Because there is plenty of very useful, good information, its usage can benefit any farm’s daily management practices. Pictures and diagrams will also be found within, meant to help the user “visualize” some of the management practices suggested. Like previously mentioned, the FDEP Small-Scale
The manual is user friendly, only about 20 or so pages in length and contains excellent information on topics for equine small scale horse operations Horse Operations Manual is still in draft form and no formal date for completion has been determined. Regardless, all farms in the state, whether commercial or not, should be using these BMPs on their farm. Extension agents are located in every county in the state and can assist you, free of charge, with a consultation on how to get your farm in compliance with these practices. University of Florida has assisted both FDEP and FDACS with the already implemented commercial operation manual and the upcoming manual meant for smaller operations. Please remember that BMPs are practical, science-based practices and are meant to be economically feasible for farms to properly implement. Additionally, many BMPs may already be in practice on your farm. After this manual has been completed, I will be sure to let all know. Don’t forget that you can always conSchedule a Farm Call: tact me, or your local Extension Agent, to get help in answering questions Jamie A.
