Leapin’! Manuel Torres and Chambacunero win the $50,000 Strongid C 2x, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, at HITS Ocala Feb. 27. n Feb. 27, daybreak in Ocala saw a dense fog lift to reveal another glorious day with bright sunshine and temperatures in the 80s at HITS Post Time Farm for the $50,000 Strongid C 2X Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. An enthusiastic crowd lined the perimeter of the grand prix arena to watch as 35 riders challenged course designer Jose “Pepe” Gamarra’s track, which at first blush appeared to be big and bold; however, it was the technical aspects of his course that proved to be subtly deceptive. Combinations short to long were followed by those that went from long to short, which required changes in stride that took their toll, as nearly two-thirds of the class suffer jumping and time faults throughout the course. Twelve riders advanced from the first round, but it was the

jump-off that really told the tale. Four riders went double clear, but all the glory went to Colombian Olympian Manuel Torres who piloted TG Show Stables’ Chambacunero to the blue in a dramatic finish to the class. In a blazingly fast ride that brought the crowd watching to its feet, Torres shaved second-place winners Aaron Vale and Paparazzi 10’s time of 32.319 seconds down to 32.235 seconds to reset the Great American Time to Beat. When asked about his strategy in the jump-off, Torres said, “I knew I had to go fast and leave all the jumps up. With the quality of the riders who were clear before me, I had to turn quicker and be faster between the jumps in order

to win. We had a stumble after landing from the double, and although Chambacunero can be a bit rambunctious on the course, he is also very quick on his feet. It was a beautiful day, the footing was great, the course was great and the crowd was incredible. It was a big win for us and a very exciting finish.” David Tromp of North Salem, New York finished third aboard Beyaert Farm, Inc.’s Casey, while Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas followed in fourth place with MTM Farm’s MTM Timon. Michael Morrissey of Bradenton, Florida was the fastest of three riders with four jumping faults and finished fifth with his own Crelido. HCD

Back!

David Beisel & Always Cullohill were tops on Feb. 24 in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health.

t was another sunny day Feb. 24 at HITS Post Time Farm in Ocala, as David Beisel and Always Cullohill, a 16 year-old Irish Sport Horse, owned by Harlow Investment Enterprises, LLC, took home the win in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. Beisel, of Goshen, Ohio, was one of 31 riders to take the field on a course designed by Jose “Pepe” Gamarra of Ellenton, Fla., who is enjoying his first season building at HITS Ocala. Originally from La Paz, Bolivia, Gamarra has a celebrated career as a course designer and has traveled the world building for some of the most prestigious events in the sport. He was an Assistant Course Designer at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, at the 2008 Olympic Games in Hong Kong, and at the Pan American Games when they were held in the Dominican Republic and Argentina. “I’m really enjoying my time here,” Gamarra said. “This

horse show has a lot to offer to a lot of people. The facility has so much room for riders to flat their horses and really prepare them. Compared to other shows, the space here is incredible. It’s very horse-friendly and is the kind of facility that the more you know it, the more you love it.” Gamarra’s first-round course proved challenging as it trimmed the playing field down to just six riders for the jump-off. “The course was comfortable for what this class calls for in a $25,000 Grand Prix,” explained Gamarra, who also designed the week’s $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome. “Delicacy was the real difference for these riders. I thought it was a great class. I expected a few more to make it the jump-off, but we had a bunch with four faults, had six go clear, and one with a time fault. Nearly every jump came down at least once. There wasn’t just one spot giving people trouble, so that tells me the course was good.” Starting the jump-off and setting the Great American Time to Beat was Patty Stovel of Chester Springs, Pennsylvania and her own Carigor Z, in 31.960 seconds. Three trips later, Beisel stole the lead by a fraction of a

second with a time of 31.725 seconds, pushing Stovel into second place. “I really didn’t feel fast enough in the jump off round,” admitted Beisel, who’s been showing Always Cullohill for only a month. “I held him back a bit in order to keep him careful, but he has such a big stride that he really covers the ground. I am still getting used to the horse, so it was great to finish up with the win.” Last to show in the jump-off was Harold Chopping and Penelope Strait & Jenna Hoy’s Little Glen’s Valentino, who finished with a double-clear effort in a nail-biting 31.970 seconds, just one one-hundredth of a second off Stovel’s time, to finish in third place. Rounding out the top of the class were Canada’s Francois Lamontagne aboard his own Anton in fourth place, and Tracey Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas, aboard MTM Farm’s MTM Centano in fifth place. Brandie Holloway of Topeka, Kansas finished in sixth place aboard Hays Investment Corp.’s Argentina. For Beisel, HITS Ocala is home for the whole family.

Beisel enjoyed his first Grand Prix win of the season with his wife, Paige, and children, Cooper and Isabelle, there to watch. The entire family competes at HITS Ocala; Paige shows in the Adult Hunters while Cooper and Isabelle have been active winning ribbons in the Beginner and Advanced Beginner Equitation divisions. HCD

he crowd was red hot on Saturday night, Feb. 26, at HITS Post Time Farm as Natalya Jarczyk and her own Frivole Des Pres captured the $15,000 Marshall & Sterling Child/Adult Jumper Classic. Exhibitors, family and friends filled the stands and The Overlook VIP Club to support one of HITS Ocala’s most coveted events. rant, was on hand serving complimentary food to spectators at The Overlook Club, to make for an extraordinary evening. Jarczyk, 15, of Orange Park, Fla., was one 67 riders to take the field on a course designed by acclaimed Course Designer Jose “Pepe” Gamarra, who is originally from La Paz, Bolivia and now resides in Ellenton, Fla. “It was so much fun!” said Jarczyk, who won on her 18year-old Selle Francais mare. “She really saved me out there. The triple in the first round was really tough and a lot of people were having trouble with that. In that combination, I added two strides in the one and she was so careful.” Jarczyk and Frivole Des Pres have been showing together since August 2009, and recently moved up to the Children’s Jumper High division. The crowd cheered the final 21 riders who returned for the jump-off, round after round. Jarczyk secured the win with a fault-free ride in 28.645 seconds. “We were just going for it,” Jarczyk explained. “I decided to run and try my best, but I knew she could do it.” Second place was awarded to Abby Bertelson of Weston, Massachusetts and Rebecca Margolis’ Bantry Bay. Third place went to Ashley Foster of Brookville, Md. and Fox Meadow Farm’s Jordy, as Lisa Balaz aboard her own Komanche de Fortenis and Melissa Woodson aboard her own Spring Heeled Jack, rounded out the top five, respectively. The Marshall & Sterling League was designed to enhance the level of competition for Children and Adult riders, with an opportunity to qualify for a prestigious National Finals competition. As of March 1, 2011, the League has 1,536 members and an anticipated 1,300 Marshall & Sterling member events. This year marks the 21st anniversary of the League and will culminate in the National Finals taking place September 15-18 at HITS-onthe-Hudson in Saugerties, N.Y. HCD

Top Dogs! orse show dogs are hardworking dogs! Does your dog fetch items for you around the barn? Does he diligently guard your tack stall or golf cart? Maybe she keeps you warm on those chilly mornings? Each week of the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit, dog owners are encouraged to take photos of their pups working hard at the show – and then to enter those photos in the Top Dog photo contest, sponsored by Exclusive™ pet food. Each week’s winner receives a prize pack worth $25, and the grand prize winner at the end of the circuit will be awarded a year’s supply of Exclusive™ dog food, as well as a $50 prize package of dog supplies and gifts. The Top Dog of Week III was a Jack Russell Terrier named Allie, owned by Charlene Kellner of Tampa, Fla. (The pony Allie is riding is named Punk’d.) After long and thoughtful consideration, judges decided that the toughest job for the dogs just might be “warming up horses,” so Allie was clearly hard at work and taking care of business! The week’s other contestants included Andrew, a Welsh Corgi from River Wind Farm in Massachusetts, owned by Jordina Ghiggeri, a Jack Russell named Bailey, owned by Sara Green from Sherborn, Mass., and Guinness, owned by Nancy Gordon. The Top Dog photo contest sponsored by Exclusive™ pet food, awards a prize each week to the HITS Exhibitor that submits a photo of their horse show dog as the hardest working horse companion dog at the show. Show us the best picture of your dog having a blast being dogs at their favorite horse show-HITS! The Weekly Winner will receive a prize pack
