Take Two!

Andre Thieme scores his second HITS Ocala grand prix victory in the $50,000 Purina Mills Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. erman show-jumping icon Andre Thieme riding Seth Vallhonrat’s Coco 135 captured the victory in the March 13, $50,000 Purina Mills Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, to close out the Ocala Finals. Thieme’s win marked the first time this sea-

G

son that a rider captured more than one victory in a Sunday grand prix, his first being aboard his own Cesar three weeks ago in the $50,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, at the Ocala Winter Festival. Thieme is no stranger to the winner’s circle. Rapidly making a name for himself as a top rider competing in the U.S., he’s built a solid reputation at HITS shows, nationwide, in a very short time. At the 2010 Ocala Masters, he and Cesar won the $75,000 Strongid C 2X Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. Thieme also traveled west to compete at the HITS Desert Circuit in Thermal, Calif., that same year and placed fifth aboard Aragon Rouet in the $300,000 Lamborghini Grand Prix, presented by Lamborghini of Newport Beach, which helped to cement his spot in the top 20 of the 2010 Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix Rider Rankings. Last September, Thieme traveled back from Germany to compete in the Pfizer Million and placed ninth aboard Aragon Rouet, collecting $15,000 in prize money. This year, with six of the eight Grand Prix needed to become eligible, he is once again on a path to qualify for the 2011 Pfizer Million, a clear goal for him as his winnings continue to grow. “The course was a perfect combination of technicality and height,” Thieme said. “The three double combinations made it tough. The oxer, oxer combination to the last jump, the big orange vertical heading towards the gate, was really tough.” Thieme was one of 43 starters on a course designed by International Course Designer Florencio Hernandez of Mexico

City, Mexico, and showed three different mounts in the class. At the end of the first round, seven returned for the jump-off. Tracy Magness of Hughsville, Md., and Mr. and Mrs. John Bartko’s Tarco Van Ter Moude were fourth to return in the jump-off and set the Great American Time to Beat at 45.73 seconds. Thieme returned for the short course two trips later and posted a clear effort in a blazing 42.51 seconds to capture the lead, which would stand for the remainder of the jump-off. “I think my first ride would have won it if it weren’t for the last jump in the first round,” Thieme explained of his ride aboard Uvalier. “So when I rode Coco [135], I added a stride and settled it back a bit and made it clear. This is a very fast horse, so we tried hard to go fast and clear in the jump-off.” Rounding out the top three was Isabelle LaPierre aboard Vicki Vale, owned by La Chaudiere Farm, who had the only other double clear round of the class. The $50,000 Purina Mills Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, was the premier event to highlight Purina Mills Weekend at HITS Ocala, which also included a special Purina Mills exhibitor party and the everpopular annual Purina Mills Kids Day, presented by Local Edge, on Sunday afternoon prior to the start of the Grand Prix. As part of the all-new Riders Incentive Bonus avail-

able to grand prix riders who use Purina Mills feed and win a Purina Mills-sponsored Grand Prix at HITS horse shows this year, Thieme was also awarded a ton of free Purina Mills feed. “I thought it was a really excellent event,” said Ty Springer, Equine Specialist for Purina Mills. “I appreciate all the help from HITS in making this weekend a special time for everyone involved. It was great to see some of our sponsored riders, such as Aaron Vale, do so well. I’m happy Andre [Thieme] celebrated a big win today. Since Thieme feeds his horses Purina Mills feed, we’re happy to award him the Purina Mills Rider Incentive Award and give his horses the fuel they need to make it to the Pfizer Million.” Thieme is the second HITS rider to win a Purina Millssponsored Grand Prix and their all-new Rider Incentive Bonus. Three weeks ago at the HITS Desert in Thermal, California Mark Watring earned himself a TON of feed when he finished on top in the $50,000 Purina Mills CSIW Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. The next chance for riders to score this hefty rider bonus will be this spring at HITS Saugerties in the $100,000 Purina Mills Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. With the win, Thieme has $23,500 in prize money aboard his leading mount Coco 135 and needs just two more Grand Prix in order to become eligible for the Pfizer Million. He currently sits in the number eight spot in the preliminary Pfizer Million Rider Rankings, while Magness has her eight Grand Prix and sits in the number three spot with nearly $50,000 in prize money won aboard Tarco Van Ter Moude. The landscape of the Rider Rankings will surely morph even more after this week’s competition in Ocala puts a bow on the 2011 HITS Winter Circuit and the first phase of the Pfizer Million qualifying season. Winning Season

Tracy Fenney wins the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, for the second consecutive week. n a season where a different high-performance rider has claimed each of the 10 grand prix held so far at HITS Ocala, Tracy Fenney just put an end to that pattern with her second victory of the circuit. Fenney was able to stave off a challenge in the jump-off by Tracy Magness to capture the March 10, $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, aboard MTM Farm’s MTM Timon. Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas, and MTM Timon were one of eight pairs to make it to the jump-off on a course designed by international course designer Florencio Hernandez of Mexico City, Mexico. The team started the jump-off and immediately set the Great American Time to Beat at 39.472 seconds, which would go untouched. “It was a good course,” Fenney said. “It walked and rode pretty big. [MTM] Timon has always been a very careful horse and he proved that on today’s course.” The classic “Battle of the Tracys” ignited when Magness of Hughsville, Md., and Mr. and Mrs. John Bartko’s Tarco Van Ter Moude nearly stole the lead in 39.789 seconds. Callan Solem of Glenmoore, Penn., and Magic Cruise, owned by Horseshoe Trail Farm, LLC,

found their way to the yellow ribbon with a double-clear effort in 40.957 seconds. The win marked Fenney’s second Thursday grand prix victory in a row, after last week’s win aboard her other mount, MTM Farm’s MTM Centano. The team of Fenney and MTM Timon were the winners in last year’s $100,000 DeLuca Toyota Tundra Grand Prix, presented by Great American Insurance Group. The season finale of the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit on Sunday, March 20, is rapidly approaching, and with so many talented high-performance riders at the circuit this year, Fenney will have her work cut out for her in seeking to reclaim that title. Magness and Tarco Van Ter Moude have been nothing short of impressive this season. They won the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, at the Ocala January Festival, and have had a string of successful top-five finishes throughout the rated Circuit, which has earned them the number two spot in the preliminary Pfizer Million Eligible Rider Rankings. Magness also currently leads the way in the Catena Leading Rider Standings; Fenny, however, is close on her heels after yesterday’s win. Fenney and Magness are both Pfizer Million alumni and are on track to once again be-

come eligible for this year’s installment of the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix. “I think that’s the most important thing for everyone right now,” Fenney said. “We and the horses all work so hard every year, and to be able to qualify for a class like that is something special. The competition has grown tremendously since everyone wants to be a part of that class, and I think those who qualify are well deserving of a spot. I’ve been showing with Tracy [Magness] and Callan [Solem] for so many years and they’re so talented. I think we help push each other in order to succeed.” HCD

$2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome On March 9, Ocala’s Aaron Vale captured the victory in the $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome aboard Texola, owned by Vale (at left) and Joan Kalman. The duo beat out 32 teams to take the top prize in the popular class. Roberto Teran finished second aboard VorAaron Vale and tex, owned by Ashlyn Texola Trevelyan, while Megan Udelson finished third aboard Pourkoipa Fontaine, owned by Moshontz Enterprises.

The Scat Daddy colt, hip No. 137, breezed one furlong in 9 4/5 seconds at OBS during last Friday’s under-tack show, the fastest work at the distance that day. He was consigned by Albert Davis of Old South Farm and purchased by K.K. Eishindo. The juvenile was a homebred for Machmer Hall Thoroughbreds in Kentucky and had never passed through a sales ring. “He’s a very nice colt, and he did everything right,” Davis said. “Even in this market, he sold well. His owner was very happy, and we’re all happy. He was really fast, has a good mind and is sound – all the things you look for in a racehorse.” The Scat Daddy colt is out of the Tale of the Cat mare Madagascat, who was unplaced in two starts and has produced one other registered foal. The colt’s second dam is the Pleasant Colony mare Colony Bay, who produced six winners, including Grade 3 winner Lindsay Jean. Also on Tuesday, a Street Sense colt went for $380,000, a Florida-bred Congrats colt sold for $350,000 to top all Sunshine State products, a Mizzen Mast colt sold for $350,000, an Empire Maker colt drew a final bid of $330,000, and an Indian Charlie colt and an Officer filly each sold for $325,000.

Of the Best Florida’s 2010 champions were honored Sunday 2

night during the FTBOA’s 51st annual awards dinner.

By MICHAEL COMPTON lorida’s stars of 2010 were honored last night during a ceremony at the Hilton Ocala. Awesome Feather was recognized as Florida-bred Horse of the Year, as well as champion juvenile filly. The Jacks or Better Farm homebred captured last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) to cap off her undefeated 2year-old season. In January, she was honored with an Eclipse Award as last year’s champion juvenile filly. Breeder of the year went to J. Michael O’ Farrell Jr.’s Ocala Stud. The family-owned farm, founded in 1956, recorded one of the best years in its 55-year history last season. The farm was represented by eight Florida-bred stakes winners in 2010, five of them graded winners. O’Farrell received a standing ovation following his moving acceptance speech in which he shared some of the struggles his family endured to keep going through the years. Florida’s stallion of the year and leading juvenile sire was Journeyman Stud’s Wildcat Heir. He led all Florida-based sires in 2010 with progeny earnings of $4,584,404. It was the second consecutive year that Wildcat Heir claimed dual titles. In 2009, he was Florida’s leading juvenile and freshman sire. Leading freshman sire of 2010 was Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds’ With Distinction. The son of Storm Cat was represented by 19 winners in his initial crop with a total of $794,889 in progeny earnings last year. Riveting Drama, dam of Florida-bred stakes winners Little Drama and Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) winner and Eclipse champion Big Drama, was honored as broodmare of the year. The 2010 Needles Award, established to honor Florida breeders who own small operations, went to Y-Lo Racing Stables, which is comprised of partners Lolita Raquiza and Yvonne Cordova. Y-Lo was represented last year by Florida-bred Grade 1 winner Wickedly Perfect. Y-Lo was established in Ocala in 2003 and has a breeding and training division. The 2010 Joe O’Farrell Memorial Award went to Ocala Stud, consignor of Florida-bred Turbulent Descent. The Joe O’Farrell Memorial Award is presented annually by the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company to the original consignor of the year’s best Florida-bred racehorse offered at public auction in Florida. Turbulent Descent won the Hollywood Starlet Stakes (G1) and Moccasin Stakes at Hollywood Park last year and earned $328,350 on the season. In other awards; Martin Wolfson was the leading trainer of Florida-breds by earnings ($1,457,600) and stakes wins (11); Kathleen O’Connell was the leading trainer of Florida-breds by races won (56); and Jacks or Better Farm was the 2010 leading owner of Florida-breds by earnings ($2,090,319). For profiles of divisional champions, see the digital version of The Florida Horse magazine (January issue) online at www.ftboa.com.

March and April are the optimum times to fertilize your pastures to get the most out of your grass.

FARM MANAGEMENT

Optimum Fertilization oy, oh boy, this weather is the best! We have actually gotten a little rain now, (although we still need more) and things are starting to grow so spring is really getting under way. March and April are the optimum times to fertilize your pastures to get the most out of your grass, so I hope we can give you some options that are smart for our springs and aquifer and good for your pastures and pocketbook. Jamie Cohen As always, soil testing is the first recommendation. If you have owned your property for a bit and have regularly soil tested, then testing every two to three years is a good guideline for how often you should test. Soil test kits can be obtained (for free) at your local county extension office. The charge for the university to get test results ranges from approximately $7 to $25. If you have not tested your soil at all, or not in several years, this is a good time to test. An annual test is recommended until a baseline of your soil’s requirements is obtained. So what results does a soil test give you, and why is it beneficial for you to test prior to fertilization? Soil testing is an inexpensive, easy way to save money and ensure that only the needed nutrients are being applied.

Regardless of the type of fertilizer that you decide you need, now is the best time to apply. Grass is already in the early stages of growth and by giving it only the needed amounts of nutrients (if any are required) and/or liming, money will be saved, the pastures will flourish and your horses will have the lush, green grass needed to help give them proper nutrition and adequate grazing. Soil testing can verify the following: ■ What is your soil’s pH? ■ How much and what kind of lime is recommended? ■ What are the needed nutrients to add to your soil? ■ How much, if any, fertilizer is needed? Fertilizers contain nitrogen, phosphorous (phosphoric acid) and potash. Nitrogen recommendations are given based on the crop (or type of pasture grass) you are trying to grow. A test result gives you accurate amounts of these, and other, needed nutrients and lime recommendations, if the pH of the soil is

too low. Repeated fertilization with nitrogen fertilizer tends to decrease the pH of soils and research and surveys conducted throughout south-central Florida have also shown a link between grazing intensity, declining soil pH and severity of mole cricket-induced bahiagrass decline. Once test result numbers have been attained there are several different types of fertilizer that can be used. Most inorganic fertilizers are termed quick-release, or water soluble. Slow-release fertilizers are preferable and highly recommended because of the time-release of the nutrients, as opposed to this instantaneous release. Although the initial cost is higher, slow-release offers “more bang for the buck.” Watersoluble, inorganic fertilizers that have been modified to allow for this controlled release of nutrients with time and the ability to release nutrients slowly, over time, is well documented. This is ideal because it won’t release excessive amounts of nutrients into the springs and aquifer. Vermiculture (worm farming) offers another type of fertilizer and has become very popular over the past few years. Worm castings are the result of “worm farming.” This is an organic, slow-release fertilizer that has been shown to have very good results as a substitute for inorganic fertilizer. Although this also has an initial cost greater than classic fertilizer, its slow release and environmentally friendly qualities also offer a great return on investment. The local Extension Office can be contacted if you have any questions. Whatever your decisions concerning fertilization, keep up the good management practices!
